Speaker 1 (00:00):
Chuck Douglas in the Power Hour on six ten WTV
and talking about the Columbus statue, the Christopher Columbus statue
that was I say, arbitrarily removed in the middle of
that I ate, under the direction of our current mayor,
because he didn't think that the statue reflected the values
of the people the city of Columbus, the city of Columbus,
which continues to be named after him even without the

(00:23):
statue down there, doesn't make sense to me. I don't
know the process for putting this on the ballot, but
I think it should be put on the ballot. The
people should be allowed to speak in the city of
Columbus about whether or not they want that statue down
there in front of city Hall where it's been for
so many years. And yesterday, you know, it was in
the news at for Columbus Day. There were some protesters

(00:45):
down there saying exactly the same thing. I agree with them.
A two one nine eight eighty six. My number A
two one WTV. And let's take him in order here,
Denny or on six ten DOUAUTVN.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Hey, Chuck, I'm very much in favor of that. I mean,
it's a great idea. I think all these states and
cities that's got all these statues toured down should take
that idea and run with it. As a matter of fact,
I get a statue, you have put an ash tray
on it. Just to get that thing on ice tray back.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
I would love to have a statue of me with
an ash tray. And maybe it's got to be attached, Denny,
so nobody can steal it.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
My wife would want one too, so I'm still play well.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
She'd want to fancy one, though. I just want to
I want to cheat dollar tree when attached to my statue.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Oh yeah, but no, I think that's a great idea.
I mean, let's show them where the people are the
merit of make the final book. That people make the
final book.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
There, that's exactly how it's supposed to work, Denny. They
just have a tendency to forget that when they want
something that they know we don't want to happen, especially
at four o'clock in the morning. Barbara on the Legacy
Retirement Groove dot Com phone line. Hi, you and me, Barbara.
I got no Barbara, all right, I'll put Barbara back

(02:01):
on hold. See we can get her back, Tim, you're
on sixthen WUTVN.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Hey, thanks for taking my call.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
How are you fine, sir?

Speaker 5 (02:09):
Good?

Speaker 6 (02:09):
Hey.

Speaker 5 (02:09):
I believe when the VIC becomes governor, we'll get our
statues back.

Speaker 7 (02:16):
I you know, taking down without a vote.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
It can be put back up without a vote.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
That from the state level or not. I think I
think Columbus needs to stand on its own two feet
for something like this.

Speaker 6 (02:28):
I hope so so God willing, well we'll get something.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
So thank you all.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
Right, I appreciate the call, Tim, Thanks very much. Interesting
interesting though about Vivek Ramaswami is there are those who
would say that that same process didn't apply to him
as he was essentially, you know, named our GOP gubernatorial
candidate without the people going to a primary. And there's

(02:52):
there's a lot of people that are going to support
him simply because we we we definitely can't have a
governor acting. But I think they would have been happier
had they been allowed to go to a primary and
choose between mister Ramaswami and anybody else that was interested
in being the Republican nominee. Just the way I'm seeing things,

(03:14):
A two one nine eight eight six month number eight
two one WTV, and we need that statue back. I
think it should go on the ballot. I think the
people should be heard and their decision should be obeyed
by the people that are supposed to be the servants
of the public. Bottom of the hour, final check of
the traffic situation from day and night, heating and cooling
products and dial mechanical. How's it in Johnny twenty three?

(03:42):
Way from the top of the hour, I'm Chuck Douglas.
This is the Power Hour on six to ten WUTV,
and talking about the Christopher Columbus statue. And people went
down to protest in downtown Columbus a city hall, you know,
in observance of Columbus Day, which then became Indigenous People's Day,
which is now Columbus Day again. And they were largely
Italian American and they want the statue back. And I

(04:04):
am on their side, absolutely on their side, not because
I have any Italian roots, but because this is Columbus, Ohio.
And I don't think you can take down a monument
like that from the people's house saying that Columbus's values
do not reflect the values. First of all, it was
fourteen ninety two for gosh sakes, the values were different.

(04:26):
Don't be an idiot. Secondly, if we're going to continue
to be called to Columbus, Ohio, it doesn't make sense
for us to be upset about a statue of our
namesake in front of our city hall. So I think
there should how, whatever the process is, there should be
a reference and put on the ballot. Let the people
of the city decide. This was done in the middle

(04:47):
of the night with no public input because the mayor
just didn't think Christopher Columbus represented the values of the
people of Columbus, Ohio. Ridiculous A two one nine eight
six A two one, Barbara, I think we got you back?
Is that so?

Speaker 6 (05:04):
I hope?

Speaker 1 (05:04):
So there you are. Yes, I hear you. You're on
sixthen WUTV and.

Speaker 7 (05:09):
I just want to say, we need that statue back.
I was born and raised in Columbus. Cumbas is my city,
I think, and I'm trying to remember back fifty three
or fifty four, I was actually one of the people
on the court more than this Columbus whatever it was
that the Italian Club had. My ancestry is an Italian,
but a beautiful girl named Beverly became the queen. We

(05:31):
had our pictures taken and the paper and all that,
but I really I was really upset when it was
taken down, and I much really have the statue back
and have a different mayor.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
I don't think you can remove him in the middle
of the night though. That wouldn't be right.

Speaker 6 (05:47):
You're sure, oh wow.

Speaker 7 (05:49):
The other thing is is we need the ship back.
I remember going down there and looking at the ship,
and it was very educational. The kids in the elementary
school would have a great time and learn a lot
because they don't understand how small those ships were.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Yeah, and I walked through it. It was a very
small they say it was I think a scale replica.
So I mean it was very small inside. It's surprising
you could make it across.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
The ocean exactly.

Speaker 7 (06:17):
And I was thinking maybe because I would be a
place for it. But yet, I don't want people to
have to pay to see it. I mean, you can
see it and then you pay extra money to go
through it. We did, Yeah, and one of the elementary
school teachers, as she retired, she was the guy through
the ship and explained it all to us. So that

(06:37):
needs to be replaced. Columbus is Columbus. I think there's
like maybe nine Columbuses in the United States, but we're
the biggest one where the capital. We need our stagy
back where it belongs. Don't waste money on the stupid
park that nobody's going to go to where.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
It might not be safe.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
Barbara, you set a mouthful. I appreciate the call, and
thanks for calling back and getting on there. I would
we somehow before old Lookie, here we got Brian Steele
on SIXTHTV and a Brian, Hey, how are you Chuck? Fine?
Are you calling about the Columbus statue?

Speaker 7 (07:11):
You know I am.

Speaker 8 (07:11):
I'm listening to show as I do every day coming
on from work, and I had to call in. This
never had anything to do with a statue. This is
just when when when you were a leader and you
have people yelling at you, disagreeing with you, you can't just
need your reaction. You gotta take a breath to your point.
If you're going to get rid of a statue, then
get rid of the name, take the take the patch

(07:32):
off the Columbus police uniform. It was to quiet a
very small but very.

Speaker 5 (07:36):
Loud majority, and this is a very minority. This is
where leaders have to stand their ground, put it out
to the people they serve. What does the community want
us to do? Overwhelmingly nobody cared about a statue. Every
single nation, society, anything in this world. What was settled
by Conkers just just read a book, right So, and

(07:57):
that's just all I wanted to say about it. I
felt compelled to call.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
I appreciate the call, and you are exactly spot on, Brian.
Thanks very much, be safe out there, and thank you
for serving and protecting this city called Columbus, Ohio. Because again,
you know, like Brian said, it's on, it's on everything,
on everything, but you pose for the cameras, you want
the SoundBite, and you know, a very vocal minority is

(08:22):
Brian put it. He's right said, Oh it's just it's offensive.
It's offensive telling me when I see the statue, I
just I feel frightened. I needed God. Those aren't the
people you cater to, you know, the the left minded
people love to throw around that word democracy. Well then
make it a democracy. Let's let the people of Columbus

(08:44):
have a say. It's that simple. A two one nine
eight eighty six A two one WTV and Steve, you're
on six tenu wutv and Hi, Hi Chuck, thank you.

Speaker 4 (08:54):
Uh yeah, I'm not really for statues to start with, Like,
I really don't. I don't think anybody should really be
put on a pedestal like that. I really don't. But
besides that, though, I'd get the historical significance and everything.
You're so right about all that and everything, But I
just feel like our money can be spent on other
things as far as city money. Now, if a sponsor

(09:16):
wanted to put it up, or if we could get
like a a I don't know, you know, a cookout
together or something and get you know, raise the money
for it or what, you know what I mean, I
would be all for it, But I just I don't.
Once they took it down, I don't. I don't see
the point in it.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
It's just an a warehouse. To deal with me anyway, Yeah,
it's just an a warehouse somewhere. So it's not like,
I mean, we already paid to have it taken down.
But if it took it, you know what, I'd bring
back the Corby tradition of the world's largest yard sale
out here in the parking lot. I'd raise the money
to have it put back. Up. If the people wanted
it up in the city wouldn't do it, I'd.

Speaker 4 (09:51):
Be all for that. I'd be all for that. I just, man,
they take too much of our money. Do you know
how I feel about taxes, Chuck. I mean, I just
you know, it's just when is it going to stop?
You know? Yes, and we just kind of draw the
line somewhere and somehow, And I don't know, it's not
gonna hurt my feelings if it gets put back put
back up, and I probably would vote yes for it,

(10:12):
but I just saint four statues.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
Yeah, it's don't I don't think really for me, Steve,
it's not so much that oh I want to have
the statue. I have to have the statue. It's it's
that in the middle of the night, at four am,
this mayor made the decision, without asking anybody, without any
public input, just decided he didn't want it there because
he didn't think it reflected our values, and had it removed.
That's just that's not right.

Speaker 4 (10:35):
I totally agree, and maybe he should be the one
to pay for it to put it back up.

Speaker 1 (10:40):
Well, there's a plan.

Speaker 4 (10:41):
I like that, you know now you say it?

Speaker 1 (10:44):
Yeah, I like that all right. I appreciate it, Steve,
thanks very much. That's you know, there's that I don't know.
There's a case to be made. Are you giving carte
blanche to UH to act arbitrarily on behalf of your
stituents when you're the mayor or is there is there
something that says, you know, you you didn't go through

(11:05):
appropriate channels here, you didn't go through the process. You're
you're liable for this. I don't know. I have no idea,
but it's it's worth exploring. And if we put the
Columbus statue back, then you know, of course we can
finally get them to put the the the Zach statue back,
which you know they took down because it was scaring kids,
but that was next to the Lion's enclosure up at

(11:27):
the Columbus Zoo.

Speaker 6 (11:28):
They're putting them back.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
It's just a beard. It's just the beard this time,
so if they don't see you behind the beard, it
won't be nearly as frightening. And and my statue will
have an ash tray on it. Yes, it's sad that
we even have to have have the conversation, it really is.

(11:50):
But again, you know, some people turned out, they they
made some noise they wanted back, and I agree. So
I'm gonna I'm gonna just just for the heck of it,
for something in grins as they say, I'm going to
see if I can check out what is the process
for creating a referendum like that and having it put

(12:11):
on the ballot. It can't be too too difficult to
do it, and you really don't even need to go
into a lot of detail as far as you know,
explaining the ballot issue or whatever. Pretty simple. Should the
City of Columbus government be compelled to return the Christopher

(12:32):
Columbus statue to nighty West Broad Street in its original position?
That's it. There's no lengthy explanation, no translation needed. A
very simple question, and of course again my answer is yes.
A two one nine eight eighty six A two one
WTV and ed. You're on the Legacy Retirement Group dot

(12:53):
com phone lines.

Speaker 6 (12:54):
Hi, Hey, Chuck, Hey, when you had Brian on the phone,
you should ask him if he could have sent down
a sketch artist for your ash tray.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
You know what, I didn't even think about that they
could have taken some fingerprints in my car.

Speaker 6 (13:07):
I thought nobody cares about your ashtray.

Speaker 8 (13:09):
Look at the.

Speaker 6 (13:12):
Yeah, I thought thought Zach was going to set up
and GoFundMe account. I was ready to give you ten
bucks for one.

Speaker 1 (13:17):
He actually did that. I can't believe he did it
and put it up on Facebook. I told him to
take that thing. I couldn't believe that.

Speaker 6 (13:24):
Well, hey, look, go on to bright Side, you'll get
a new one.

Speaker 1 (13:27):
Oh yeah, well I stopping it one tonight. I just
of all the things they could have done. And then
did you hear the one guy call and say his
neighbor over here Marble Cliffs you had somebody camp out in.

Speaker 6 (13:37):
Their car phone? Yeah? What Why in the world is
going on with these people nowadays?

Speaker 1 (13:43):
I don't know. I just leaving your cell phone is
one thing. Leaving your pants behind that's something else.

Speaker 6 (13:51):
Well, they probably took that chuck because they couldn't find
nothing in your car. That's probably one.

Speaker 1 (13:55):
They had probably said something, Well you got anything on
the stats?

Speaker 4 (14:00):
You ed?

Speaker 1 (14:00):
Because I want to get a couple more calls in
here before I now everybody. Well, you have a great
appreciate I appreciate you making me smile. Thanks very much.
A two one w TV And is the number time
you're on the Legacy Retirement Group dot com phone lines.

Speaker 3 (14:12):
Hi, yes, sir, how are you. I appreciate you're taking
me call my call. I just wanted to chime in
on the statue. Absolutely put it back and absolutely get
rid of that Mayor.

Speaker 1 (14:29):
You don't sound like you you had to think about
that very hard time.

Speaker 3 (14:33):
No, sir, I have been totally disappointed with him, and
I don't know all in hell he has stayed in there,
but he needs to get gone. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
Well, his staying in there has a lot to do
with the other side of the political fence. Until they mobilize,
organize and decide that they're going to start fielding some candidates,
backing some candidates, and getting some candidates elected, it will
be continually of a Democrat run county.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
YEP. I agree with that, And I don't know why
the Republicans haven't took this opportunity with Trump being back
in office, to stand up at say less, ripe this ship,
and get it selling down the right path, because look
at Columbus since he's been mayor, look at look at

(15:20):
at what's happened.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
Yeah, I mean, it's a simple question what's better? What's better?
Even comparing Democrats to Democrats between Michael Coleman as mayor
and Andy ginthers mayor? What's better?

Speaker 3 (15:35):
So I would take Michael Bowman every day of the week,
ran together.

Speaker 1 (15:39):
There there you go. I think a lot of people
feel that way. Tom, thanks very much for the call. Yeah.
I mean, if was it Reagan that said are you
better off today than you were four years ago? The
same thing applies. What's better? Crime better, streets better, what's been?

(16:02):
If people honestly answered that question, I don't know that
mister ginther would be running again in twenty twenty seven,
but unfortunately he will likely run unopposed. Oh my gosh,
it makes me ill just to say that.
