Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're gonna talk a little NFL today ck on Sports

(00:02):
five Sports Radio, Fresno State grade, former number one draft
pick in the NFL, David Carr.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Joining me right now?

Speaker 3 (00:08):
What up? Man?

Speaker 2 (00:09):
There you go, David Carr. How are you doing?

Speaker 3 (00:11):
Sir?

Speaker 1 (00:12):
There were you doing fantastic? Let's talk a little football.
Let's talk about Jackson Dart.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
All right?

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Can Jackson Dart save the day for the New York
Football Giants?

Speaker 4 (00:23):
I mean, that's the hope, right I think that that's
That's also why I'm I'm you know, I'm happy for
him to get an opportunity to play, and all young
guys want to get out there and they want to
get on the field.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
But I'm also cautious.

Speaker 4 (00:34):
Because I understand the world that he's in right now.
He has a head coach that's probably trying to stay
his job, probably trying to find a spark. I broke
this down with Derek to the Day on our show,
and it's like, it is n't Derek quite there yet.
You know, offensive line has some holes. Gramatically, they just
got out coached last week. No one talks about that,
but Steve Spagnola just out coached Brian day Ball.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
It was very clear.

Speaker 4 (00:57):
The last couple throws into the end zone for Russ, there's.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
No order to throw football. Everyone was covered.

Speaker 4 (01:01):
So I mean, that's that's why I get concerned. The
only way I think that this works out well for
them is if Dave Ball does what he do with
Josh and he utilizes.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Him in the run game.

Speaker 4 (01:12):
The The one problem with that is Jackson is not
the size of Josh that he has Josh's josh An
has durability. He's got physical size similar to what Cam
Newton had when he was running the ball a lot,
so he has the ability to kind of withstand those impacts.
I just don't know how much you can do, you know,
with Jackson from a longevity standpoint.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
So I'm watching it.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
We're we're we're gonna be on that game, like just
making sure that, you know, we like to look out
for quarterbacks, and so I want to make sure that
they're taking care of him because.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Yeah, just by you look at Russ rushed almost five
ory yards against the Dallas Cowboys, and you know there
are there are opportunities there.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
You know, this last week he tried to force the
issue downfield. So I'm hopeful Jackson played well in the preseason,
he showed that he's a kid that gets it, understands
what he's looking at.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
So you know, I'm I'm I'm costlessly optimistic.

Speaker 4 (02:00):
I think that their team is still a team that
has some holes.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
But if he can be a spark for them and
he can get the run and.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
Goal with Scataboo and those guys, then great. Then that's
something that Russ wasn't providing. I will say that Russ
was trying. He was trying to use his legs. He's
just a little bit older now, so it's not quite
what it was before.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
So if Jackson can come.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
In and use that, that might be a little bit
of next factory and give him a chance.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
My concern is that you're throwing him out there too soon.
I mean, even when you look at someone like Patrick Mahomes,
I don't believe he started until the very last game
of his rookie season. I'm like, you have another quarterback
there that is serviceable. Why not put a younger version
of Russell Wilson in there and then let Jackson dark

(02:43):
continue to sit back and learn. I mean, I understand
what's going on with day Ball, and maybe they're thinking
he has to make this switch to save his job.
But if I was Dayball, I would have said this
from the very beginning. This is a year in which
there's gonna be a lot of growing pain, and I
hope the fans are gonna be willing to take this ride,
this journey, and just understand there's gonna be a lot

(03:05):
of ups and downs. It didn't work out with Russell Wilson,
so now we go to the other backup quarterback, Jameis Winston,
and let's see what he can do. But we're not
gonna throw Jackson Dart to the Wolves. And that's my concern.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
That's crazy about that is you handle that press conference
right there better than Brian dave All has handled any
press conference all year, honestly, Like, when you look at
those those opportunities that he has to do exactly what
you just did, he does not take that opportunity. All
he talks about is creating a package for Jackson Dart
and that all that does is just throw it. Just
fans the flame. There's like a groundswell that starts when

(03:43):
there's a young quarterback, and what the head coach's job
is is to protect the young quarterback and to keep
him off the field as long as possible until he's
absolutely ready, or even better yet, until the team around
him is ready. And and Brian honestly like he has
failed at that. He has failed as at that because
every opportunity that he's been given to do just what
you did, he has taken the other route and said,

(04:05):
we're just gonna get Jackson ready, We're going to start
to implement him. He's been putting him in in the
last couple of games. That's not helping the situation. Well,
that's doing is speeding it up. And so yeah, I
agree with you one hundred percent. That's exactly the route
that he should have taken. I personally have told people
I would have rather sat my first year even I
would have I would have I would have rather sat
that first year and watched someone do it that I

(04:28):
had fun that first game beating the Cowboys. I would
trade that for the opportunity to kind of sit there
and watch somebody do it at the professional level before
I had to go out there and try to try
to do that. So I think I think that that's invaluable.
Unfortunately for Jackson, he's not gonna get that chance. And
I'm just afraid it's another Daniel Jones situation that we're
gonna get out in a couple of years that Jackson
could actually play, they've all be gone. He'll land in

(04:51):
the team that takes care of him and he'll be
a great player. But hopefully he gets to that point
without some bad habits.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
And it goes back to the conversation that you had
with me from the very beginning of the season.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
You know, if CJ. Stroud and Bryce Young were.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
To switch physicians, right, you know, and I think the
same thing about Jackson Dart. I'm like, oh man, please
don't don't do this to this young kid, because I mean,
we see what happens time and time again when you
get a youngster out there. I mean, the game is
moving at a speed, unreal, unlike anything they've ever seen
in college.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
And you notice, you you just talked about it yourself.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
You're like, I would have done anything to be able
to sit back and watch for one year.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
You're just not ready for the speed man, And it's like,
it's not that your body can't do it, but you
just you're you're the mental.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
Side of it is.

Speaker 4 (05:37):
So it's so taxing because you have to understand what
the defensive structure is where you're in, you know, the
ability to get it out of the best play, to
kind of save the play calls from the sideline. And
then there's always you have to have contingency plans. We
did an interview with John Gruden yesterday and.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
It's gonna air tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (05:52):
Me Derek, we sat down with him and he talked
about that. He's like, these young kids aren't giving contingency plans.
They're given flashcard offenses. Yeah, we kind of just show you,
all right, run this play regardless of what's happening. And
then and then they kind of panic to get in
bad habits. They don't really understand what they're looking at.
And so it's it really is. That's not that Jackson
can't do it physically, of course he can't. It's it's
the mental processing that you have to have to understand

(06:15):
what you're seeing. And I remember, I keep going back
to this, but Eli. Tom Koslin made Eli write down
every blitz, every defensive structure versus all of our protections
that he had before he replaced, before he replaced Kurt Warner.
He had to know that inside out. Has it proved
that he could do it on the field and then
they feel comfortable making the switch. But even then Eli
would tell you he wasn't quite ready yet. So it's

(06:36):
just it's a tough situation that you find yourself in.
Hopefully Jackson doesn't have to do it as long as
Daniel did, and if it is bad and bab Ball
is not able to kind of figure this thing out,
that they'll just move on and find someone else to
kind of help Jackson continue on to be the Giants
quarterbacks in the future.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
I know the Baltimore Ravens are one and two, but
let me say this, the games that they have lost
have been some of the most entertaining football I've seen
came quite some time. Best one and two football team
in the league. Talk about the Ravens of what they
need to do because obviously they have a little work
to do to just get over those little humps.

Speaker 4 (07:09):
Yeah, it's not even like they faced really some good
football team. Yeah, and when you look at it, I mean,
obviously the Detroit Lions had it.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
They were on a mission. They made some incredible plays in.

Speaker 4 (07:17):
That game, you know, with some big fourth downs to
continue to drives.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
But the Baltimore Ravens hung right with him. So this
is gonna be.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
A team that is the longeety longevity of the seasons.
This team has got for the long haul. Obviously, Derek, he's.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
Not gonna fumble every week.

Speaker 4 (07:31):
He's had some moments the last couple of weeks where okay,
he's put it on the ground.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
But that now, that is.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
Just something that you emphasize and you think and you
make sure that that doesn't happen again. He's definitely capable
physically and mentally of handling this. It's so it's a
one off. I think they're gonna be right there at
the end. I do know Detroit is fun, though, man,
because they could have easily. It's really about the mental makeup.
Like I love Dan Campbell, I love Amaros Saint Brown's
mental makeup. Jared Goff, those guys who said, yeah, easily,

(07:56):
we could have lost Vin Johnson, could have lost Aaron
Glynn and then just kind of all right, we're not
the team that we used to be, and they didn't
let that happen. You know, they're sitting in now that
shoot and one just eat the Baltimore Ravens, who a
lot of people would say as part one of the
best teams in the NFL home in their house. That
gives them so much shorts confidence, having hutchbacks punching the
ball out. I mean, the defense is flying around. This

(08:17):
is a good football team. So this was just this
is two good football teams playing each other. That's why
I hate the penalies either one of those teams. Right,
you got two of the top five, maybe ten teams
in the league.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
They battle it out.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
One comes up short, doesn't take away from who they are.
They're still gonna be there in the end. So it's
gonna be fun to watch these guys going forward.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Yeah, what it is is just a very tough schedule.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
C k on Sports Fox Sports Radio, we're talking with
the former number one NFL draft pick, David Carr, talking
the little NFL football today. David, we have six undefeated
teams left. Which one is the biggest surprise? And by
the way, you can't say the forty nine ers, because
that's the team you picked to be in the Super
Bowl and they're doing exactly what you said that defense
was gonna do.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
That's right, No, exactly we knew they were. They've done
it with the back of quarterbacks. Wife because that's fantastic.
I love I love the fact that they are where
they are. It's honestly about the health and honestly, they've
had some health issues already. They're gonna get some guys back.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
They'll get killed back, you know.

Speaker 4 (09:09):
For me, like the Buccaneers is really interesting.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
Yeah, he Like both those.

Speaker 4 (09:12):
Teams are fun to me because you look at Baker,
like in what he's gone through. And we've talked about
the quarterbacks with Jackson Dart And there was a time
I remember I.

Speaker 3 (09:20):
Got a picture. I sent it to our group chat.

Speaker 4 (09:21):
My brother and my both my brothers in it, my
boys are in it. It was a picture of Baker
Mayfield in a three point stance on the practice squad
for the Panthers, rushing the passer, and like that was
him in a situation that was not conducive to winning.
And now he finds himself after a couple stops from
La and now in Tampa, he's gotten two of his
offensive coordinator's head coaching jobs and he's on his way

(09:43):
to leading you know, this undefeated team to go play silly.
And I think that's that's gonna be fantastic. Man, that's
a it's a matchup, it's a Titan matchup, it's a
playoff match a few years ago.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
That's super fun to me.

Speaker 4 (09:55):
But the Chargers are also a team that I think
are built correctly in which they.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Have a quarterback that has raw talent that.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
Is just incredibly gifted, but they don't necessarily feel like
they have to utilize that all the time.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
They're gonna be a run first team. They're gonna win
in the trenches. You know, losing Khalil is gonna hurt.

Speaker 4 (10:10):
But I think that that defensive structure at all three levels,
We've talked about it for several years. They have the
makeup to be a great team. They have the matchups
across the board. But I think that that that is
something that we're gonna have to keep an eye on
because that's we look at that division with the Chiefs.
The Chargers are not They're not just gonna disappear now
like they are. They are there to stay. And then
also in the AFC, the Colts. You know, the Colts

(10:31):
are gonna play the Rams.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
This week. The Rams had the Eagles beat like.

Speaker 4 (10:34):
They had him, they had him down three scores, and
Philly did what Philly does. They come back to the
World Champs Star at home. They figured out a way
to win, which was very impressive. But the Coults are
coming into LA and that's an interesting team because we've
been kind of waiting for Dame Jones to return to
the forum.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
He has.

Speaker 4 (10:51):
He's the guy that we all hoped he would be.
He's just surrounded by good talent. Defensively, they're playing really well.
They do some really interesting things on the defensive side.
That's gonna be a great matchup coach defense for Sean mcday.
How they figure out how to move Ka around, get
the ball to Puka. That run game is still solid
in LA, So that's gonna be a great matchup. I
think that's gonna be a lot of fun to watch.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Switching over to Fresno State, Let's talk about this Fresno
State football team that has now won four in a row.
And of course I want you to take a moment
to talk about what it was like when you finally
got to sit down with Jeff Tedford, now that the
world knows what's going on, and just share the news
that he's gonna be in the Ring of Honor. But
talk about the Fresno State football team. I know that

(11:33):
you've been talking recently with Kurt and EJ.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Warner.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
It's really weird to like hear Kurt Warner do Monday
night football or even see him on the NFL network
the next day after a Fresno State game, knowing that
he was in town to watch.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
Well, I thought I was talking to me about the
other day.

Speaker 4 (11:47):
It's like his schedules crazy because he could be money
at football, but then like even the late game, he's
clearly watching his EJ play and then he's up at
four o'clock in the morning doing game.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
Day morning on.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
Yeah, man, he's like I'll sleep after the season definitely
locked in.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
It was awesome. They got the windows on the rock.
That was fantastic. That's not easy to do, man.

Speaker 4 (12:06):
I remember I remember going over there several times, especially
there last year. It was just going up losing the
football game. So that was that was a great win.
I don't care how you get it. I don't care
if they have more first downs and you I don't
care what happens. You find a way to win the
football game. Yeah they did that. That's tremendous. So but
with Jeff, like Jeff was, Jeff was awesome because you know,
we were fortunate enough to be able to go over
there with Pat, me and Derek and knocked on his

(12:27):
door and he thought his kids were coming over for dinner,
and I almost think that he was more excited to
see yes, but I'm not gonna It was so fun, man,
because he didn't have any idea, He really didn't, and
his wife is a good job keeping it a secret
from him. And we we went in, We got to
talk to him, got to tell him that he was
gonna be in the Ring of Honor, which was all tremendous,
all of the sudden, you guys thought on social media.

(12:48):
But the coolest part man, like when the cameras shut off,
we sat there for like four hours, told stories and
it was so fun man Like him and Pat went
back and forth, and Me and Derek were able to
interject and tell stories about time with them, and got
to hear a lot of the history behind why he
loves this place so much. When I tell you, like
I didn't really even know until even that day, like
the depth of the love that he has for this school,

(13:11):
Like he is he's still so upset that he's not
able to continue to be out there like he loved
this school more than more than really anybody that I've
ever been around. Wow, and such a history, like back
from the early eighties, you know, wanting to be a
part of this program, you know, wanting to come to
play quarterback here. The pat told the story about how
he told Sweeney, you better know you get this, You
better go get this kid, you know down there it

(13:32):
was Jeff and not this one kid that you were
going to go to recruit. And so of course Sweeney
he changed directions and he went over and offered Jeff
and he ended up signing. He was going to almost
go to Georgia and hand the ball off to Herscha Walker.
And I remember Sweeny, he Sweeney told Jeff. He told
his couch the other day, Squeeny said, Hey, do you
want to go hand the ball off to a guy
forty times?

Speaker 3 (13:51):
Or do you want to throw it sixty times?

Speaker 4 (13:53):
And he was like that was it for him, And Jeff.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
Came and he threw the ball around and the rest
is history.

Speaker 4 (13:57):
But man, it was such a cool day to be
able to spend time with those guys. And he was
so appreciative and he's so grateful. I'm really excited for
him to get his moment in the stadium. I think
the fans are going to be excited to see him again.
But he looks great, he feels he feels healthy. That's
what I was most happy for. And he's able to
spend a lot of time with his kids and it's
it's been a good time for him. But yeah, it
was really cool to catch up. That was That was

(14:18):
definitely an awesome day.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
David.

Speaker 1 (14:21):
Thank you so much for your time. It has been
the audible brought to us by Valley Children's Hospital. Before
we let you go, please talk about the Homegrown Network
and talk about what it's like working with your brother.
You guys are putting some great content out there.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
Thanks man.

Speaker 4 (14:35):
Yeah, it's been super fun. We love breaking down film,
We love talking about the game. We try to do
it differently than most of the major TV networks because
there's so many teams that just they don't get talked about.
It's always usually about the Cowboys or some teams that
are just kind of at the at the top of
the media markets. But we like to really dig into
the stories and the whys and like these these situations
that we're talking about with Jackson Darwk, Daniel Jones moving around.

(14:56):
Derek is so knowledgeable, Like I know, I know the
game obviously from watching it from Afar for the last
decade or so watching him, but he like knows these
coordinators intimately. When he breaks down film, it's like it's
really it's eye opening, even for me. So I encourage
the fans to check this out socially as you're like,
you like the Raiders, you want to know why the
offensive line is struggling. He did a great job breaking down.
He knows the guys that are that are making these plays.

(15:18):
He knows the calls that they've made in the past,
what they're not doing here, how to fix it. So
it's really cool because he he's like, basically he said
Ashton Gent, he's a great back, Like why is he
getting going? One hundred percent of his yards right from
scrimmage have been after he's been hit, which is crazy, like,
so he's not even getting the run started. So they
got to fix some things there. We talked to John
Gruden yesterday. It'll air tomorrow, so we had a great

(15:41):
conversation with Gruden, him and Derek.

Speaker 3 (15:43):
I just let them talk. Man. I was like a
fly on the Wall.

Speaker 4 (15:45):
It's so fun to kind of hear some of their stories.
So that'll that'll drop out tomorrow tomorrow morning, I think
Thursday morning it'll come out. So that'll be a fun
conversation for everyone to enjoy. But it's been a blast.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
And I'll say this, just watching you and your brother together,
watching the fun that you guys have, the interaction, whether
it's the Homegrown Network or even what you guys did
with Coach Hill Jeff Tedford, it's like, yeah, you guys
are kids all over again. Do you get that feeling
now that he's retired and you're retired and you guys
are both having a lot of free time that you're

(16:17):
reliving your childhood in a way.

Speaker 3 (16:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (16:19):
Really, it's been super fun because we've kind of all
we've done the hard work, you know, at this point,
it's like, right, we're both enjoying our kids and enjoying
the time together.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
He's coaching over here some flag football with his son.
I went out there.

Speaker 4 (16:30):
I'm coaching with in my daughter's cheerleading on the sideline forum,
and it's so fun to be able to kind of
just chill and talk about the game that we love
and then to be able to do it and other
people can enjoy some of the stories and just kind
of get to enjoy it with us. But dude, even
when the cameras are off, man, we have such a
fun time.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
We got show and it takes like four hours because
we just don't.

Speaker 4 (16:48):
Shut up, and we're all having a blastom doing it
with my boys, some of our best friends are in
the room with us, right.

Speaker 3 (16:53):
It's been really cool to be able to do that.

Speaker 1 (16:55):
It's gonna be a lot of good football to watch
this weekend. Unfortunately no Fresno State action, but we're still
going to get a lot of good football to watch
and talk about next week.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
Buddy, love it.

Speaker 3 (17:04):
Man, there he is.

Speaker 1 (17:05):
David Carr loved being able to catch up with him
on a weekly basis thanks to our friends at Valley
Children's Hospital The Audible Right here with CK on Sports

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
