Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ck on Sports. It is Fox Sports Radio. Today we're
talking with the assistant coach from Fresno State Track and Field,
Gary Knule. I know they do have the Fresno State
Invitational that's going to be coming up. I want to
say May second and third. They have a great event
that we're going to be talking about happening May second.
That's going to involve alumni and of course the community.
But we were just talking about recruiting. Getting out there

(00:20):
on the recruiting trail.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
There's tons of different divisions that you can run it.
There's not just Division one. There's Division two, Division three, NAIA,
or you can go to the Juko route and eventually
get yourself up to the level that you want to
get to. But with Fresno State, you know, if you're
looking to see, Okay, how can I get on the
radar of these coaches? The best thing that you can do,

(00:44):
and for us as coaches, we get impressed by this
is when people do their research. When they see like, Okay,
this is what it takes the core at the national championships,
this is what it takes a score at the conference championship.
These are the current athletes that are on their team.
You know, if you look at those things, then you

(01:04):
can look at yourself and me, Okay, this is where
I'm at right now, and I want to be able
to score at the conference championship I balk more junior season.
I need to be running these times. And so if
you're able to have that knowledge, then you can set
those schools for yourself in high school and say, Okay,
I'm gonna try to run fifty five seconds for my

(01:25):
senior year. If you're running fifty five seconds as a senior,
there's a pretty good chance that I'm going to be
calling you right trying to get you.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
And we're talking about young high school female athletes at
this point, because I'm sure that there's some male athletes
in high school that are sitting there thinking themselves, shoot,
I can run a fifty five in the four hundred. You,
my friend, need to be running forty nine and under
exactly exactly.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Yeah. And that's the whole different area with the men,
because we do have the roster limits on the men's side.
We look at guys who can have a good financial
package right so they can they get the financial aid
or the time that's going to afford to send them here.
Those are the guys that we want to come to

(02:10):
Present State. But at the same time, like we're able
to still develop guys. I guess because we don't have scholarships.
On the men's side, we have some pretty good guys
here in all different eyes here do We've We've got
guys that are scoring in the mid distance mid distance
events at the conference. We've got guys scoring in the
jumps and the throws. We've got a couple of the friends.

(02:32):
Like we're we've got a good men's team. We just
don't have the scholarships do scholarships, and we don't have
the amount of bodies that these other schools may have,
But we do have the coaches and the resources in
place to still help you develop and get to the
level of competition that you want to be in.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
And you know what, especially if you're a California student,
a California athlete, going in some place like Fresno State
definitely affordable and like you said, depending on your grade,
you might be able to find yourself going to Fresno
State for almost next to nothing.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Yeah. Absolutely, I've got a guy on my team right now,
one of the one of our sprinters and We've had
some guys in the past in different event areas, but
they've they are Smith Camp recipients. See, well, they're on
a full scholarship. Yeah, and they're getting well. So that's
that's definitely possibility.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
We're talking to Gary Neuwle, assistant coach Fresno State Track
and Field. By the way, like I said, this show
is on in four different markets, so you're heard up
and down California right now. Gary, I know you guys
are going to be at Arcadia. I know you guys
are going to be going to the state meet. So
if you have a son or daughter that's running track,
be on the lookout for Fresno State. One thing we

(03:46):
got to talk about before we let you go. The
Fresno State Invitational is coming up. I know that you
have a great alumni event that's going to be happening.
I want to say it's May second. Talk to everybody
about the Fresno State Invitational, and then talk to everyone
about the alumni event.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
So the from State Invitational we host it every year.
This year it's going to be on May second and
May third, So the all of the running and field
events will be hosted at a Veteran Memorial Stadium on
May third. Everything except for the shotput. The shotput will

(04:25):
be held at Warmer Dawn Field here on campus on
May second, and the shotput will begin at six pm.
And because we're going to have multiple flights of women
and men in the last for a few hours where
we're planning on wrapping left around eight thirty or nine.
But food will be served at five pm and we

(04:47):
will have one dollar beers as well as DJ and
music provided as well too. But this big thing, you know,
where it's we invite all alumni and all friends to
come out. You know, you don't have to just be
a on State grad to come out here. You can
just see a simple track, fan or you want something
to do on a Friday night, come check it out.
Everybody out here, our whole staff, we're approachable, we love

(05:10):
to connect with the community. We want to try to
bridge that gap between the community and Fresno State. We
just we want people to to kind of take ownership
of this program and realize that, you know, everybody's welcome
here and so it's gonna be gonna be a funny man,
and we really really want everybody to come out and

(05:30):
just whether that's whether you're coming out to watch the
competition or you're coming out because you just want to
connect with other other alumnis and other friends. We want
you to come out and just have a good time.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
And that's exactly what it's gonna be. It's gonna be
a good time. I know the DJ is gonna be
out there. I'll get out there, get on the mica,
say a little something, get to watch the throwers starting
at six o'clock one dollar beers. All I'm saying is
if you're looking for something to do, if I were you,
I would go in and grab my or even put
a little mental note to write this down. May second,

(06:05):
Fresno State Invitational begins, and we're gonna have ourselves a
nice little shin dig on May second, as we welcome
all the athletes to the Fresno State Invitational and of
course get caught up with some Fresno State alumni and
continue to grow this track community. That's the one thing
I will say about you guys. You guys are easily approachable.

(06:25):
You guys are all likable. So if you ever see
a Fresno State track and field coach, don't be afraid
to go up to them, talk to them, ask them
about certain things. Just like the conversation we had right now.
I thought it was very real and very honest. The
way you broke down those numbers and you're like, you
know what You're really the reason you know the numbers,
You know what you need to hit. You put in

(06:46):
the work. If we see some flaws in the mechanics
and we know that we could take you to the
next level. Believe me, we want you here at Fresno State.
So Gary, I appreciate your time. Get ready for that
Fresno State Invitational, May second, and third.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Slowly, absolutely, I mean that's what we plan on doing. Man,
I appreciate you having me and hopefully we'll see all
out here at home.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
There you go. Assistant coach Frisne State Track and Field,
Gary Knule love talking track from time to time. Love
when I see these guys get out there in the community.
And of course a show like mine, a platform like mine.
I want to make sure that if you have a
son or a daughter that's running track up and down
this state of California, Like I said, Riverside, San Bernardino, Modesto, Stockton, Bakersfield,

(07:30):
FRESNOE State always looking for good track and field athletes
and their coaches. They're amazing people, so hope to see
everyone showing up for the Fresno State Invitational. CK on
