Speaker 1 (00:17):
It's Week two of the college football season and the
ACC is down to one legitimate playoff contender. Welcome to
the College Football Week two preview with myself, Joe Tanzy,
Ryan Beef coyled Mark Henry Junior. Guys, the ACC is
dead on arrival after one week in Florida State's case,
two weeks weeks of play. I mean, it makes the
(00:40):
playoff discussion pretty easy that one conference has basically eliminated
its eliminated itself from contention right away.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yeah, I think that was one of my main takeaways
from Week one that I think that's going to be
a one one bid league at the end of the day.
It sounds funny to say, I feel like I'm talking
about the Sun Belt or something in March Madness, but yeah,
it looks like the ACC is gonna be one bid league.
And I was the Miami guy the whole offseason and
(01:10):
I thought it was an impressive performance. But I also
think it said more about Florida in the season that
they're probably gonna have more so than Miami. So I mean,
who knows what. I think it will learn more about
Miami in the next month, whether really not they're going
to be a dominant team, but I think that Clemson
offense is going to struggle. I don't care that it
was Georgia. I think Kate club Nick, it is not
an ACC level quarterback. Virginia Tech was even more of
(01:33):
a disappointment to me. I think we all were on
Virginia Tech as well, but still a lot of ball
left for them to be playing. But that's a bad
way start your year. And then I think Florida State
is just dead, gutless. And the one team we really
talking about, Yeah, one team we didn't talk I feel
like that much about this offseason from the ACC was Louisville.
(01:54):
They had an impressive showing Week one. It wasn't against
any high marquee team, but they were in the AEC
title last year and they're already ranked again, so maybe
put some respect on their name and they might be
one of the teams that kind of comes up and
challenges Miami at the top.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
There somebody has to mark before we get into we
have a segment. Now, look at us being all structured
and everything. Before we get into our new segment making
its debut this week, Mark, is there another conference outside
of the ACC that I have any broad takeaways from
whether it be the SEC, the Big the Big Twelve,
a group of five conference, anything that stood out to
(02:30):
you from the non ACC perspective.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Yeah, I feel like people want to have a big
takeaway about the SEC because there was obviously Texas A
and m loses to Notre Dame, LSU loses to USC.
I think I'm obviously Florida loses to Miami, so you
have those big results. There were also some teams that
put up some big numbers on some bad opponents, and
obviously you got Georgia looking like clearing away the best
(02:54):
team in the country. So I think it's hard to
have big, swooping takeaways on a conference other than the
ACC because that's a one bid league. I totally agreed,
like there's no scenario to me that we get two
ACC teams in the playoff, And I was saying that
I don't think the ACC or the Big Twelve gets
a second bid as a whole, Like I was saying
(03:15):
both would be one bid leagues before the playoff, and
now we'll get into a team that kind of affects
the whole conference shakeup of how the playoff could look.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
By what happened in week one.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
But yeah, the SEC I think still will have plenty
of teams in playoff contention. I know there's some people
out there saying maybe the Big ten's better than the SEC,
maybe the top.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Of it is.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
I think the middle of the SEC will still be
a lot better than the middle of.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
The Big Ten.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
So we don't have a sounder for this, but if
we did, we'd sound the trumpets, the reggae tone, steel drums,
whatever it may be. We have a segment. We are
structured here on the College Football Show. We don't need
sean Brace. We have structured. Some would argue sean brace
brings less structure to a shoe. Stock up stock down
(04:03):
for two things. The College Football Playoff now expanded to
twelve teams, so we can do this every week and
not be redundant about the top four and the Heisman Trophy,
because I feel like, at least going into the season
there you could cast a pretty wide net of who
could be in contention for the Heisman Trophy. Mark, I
will start with you, and we'll start with the playoff
(04:24):
stock up stock down. I have a pretty good feeling
who your stock up is gonna be.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
Yeah, it's gotta be Notre Dame, and that's just objective.
You look at the schedule. Thankfully, the last couple of
years they've had Ohio States and Georgia's and Clemsons when
Clemson was good on the schedule, it doesn't look like that.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
This year Florida State was supposed to be one of
their bigger games.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
They don't necessarily look like that's gonna be such a
tough game in South Bend. So their biggest game of
the year were their first and last games on the
road at Texas A and M and now on the
road at USC in November. You look in between, yeah,
I mean, Beef mentioned Louisville, who's on the schedule as well.
I believe that game at Notre Dame so probably not
as tough as it was last year in Louisville. And
(05:04):
I think Notre Dame is a little better than they
were last year, but don't take my word for it
after that win. I think before the before the year started,
they were minus one forty to make the playoff. I
think they were being given some somewhere between a fifty
five to sixty percent chance.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
They are now at minus three.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Hundred on draftings to make the playoff right now, So
that gives you a pretty good idea.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Every every analyst said they'll be favored in every game,
and that that that pretty much is whether or not
they know what odds are, but they are kind of
true with with what's going to happen, and I guess
that that shifts a lot of pressure a beef your
stock up for the college football playoff.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Is usc Trojans. I was on here last week saying
that I think that they could be one and three
by the time September ends, And while I'm not fully
bought in, I do think let's use a team that
I think is going to be closer to an eight
win squad than a playoff team. But just like the
willingness to tackle in the overall defensive position, I think
(06:03):
we talked a lot about Linn coming over from UCLA,
and the defense certainly looked improved, looked the part. One
of the stats I heard from the off season was
last year in the bowl game against Louisville, they only
missed six tackles. When he was helping work with the
team leading up to the game. That was the fewest
tackles they missed all year. And so you saw the
clear improvement there. I do think though, as a year
(06:24):
goes on, that's something to monitor because that was something
that just got worse and worse under Lincoln as time
has going on, because I think at the end of
the day, tackling is a willingness thing. It's kind of
a mindset, and you know, you get a dinged up
shoulder six games into the year, are going to be
tackling like you are in week one. But if they do,
they have the talent. Lincoln Riley offenses are always going
(06:44):
to be able to move the ball. Miller Moss looked
like a really composed quarterback. They're up to plus three
twenty now to make the playoff. I'm not fully bought in.
I think it's going to be a tough adjustment, still
fully in the Big ten. But it was an eye
opening performance for sure, and one that I would like
to say it's trending in the point of of me
being wrong on them for this year.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Mark you're you're a wrestling guy, so I need you
to catch onto this pretty quick and and and add
to this because I thought of this earlier today about
my stock up, and I need to hope you catch
on because if not This would be a really awkward,
awkward stock up. My stock up is the defense playing
(07:25):
Drew Aller has an armed, big play throwing running back,
duo playoff contender, potential Big Ten championship Mark, where are
my wos here? Oh?
Speaker 4 (07:39):
I didn't get what you were doing. I get it
a little bit more now.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
I was trying.
Speaker 5 (07:42):
I was trying to Rick Flair here for fair Yeah,
well I was trying to get some here. But with
Penn State, Penn State stock up, it's the first first
week for the segment.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
We got a little work to do.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
We're in three different spots. Thought you catch on Penn
State stock up? I mean you could make a case
they were the second best team in week one pretty easily. Right,
you have a team in Georgia who's the clear number one.
But if you were doing it based on solely power rankings,
right the Penn State and at the Lions, I would
put a number two. The defense we knew it is
(08:18):
usually the rock, right abdel Carter get another one of
the through the pipeline at in the front seven. The
fact that Alan and Singleton came back I think would
be potentially huge. That wasn't the big takeaway. The big
takeaway was Trey Wallace and Drew Aller and the big
play is that, by the way, we need to stop
(08:39):
Gus Johnson at all costs. I don't know if you
guys watched the game. I did. Andy cole Nikki, the
new offensive coordinator, I guess has some sort of like
hockey past, and Gus Johnson started calling him the big
Zamboni and would not stop. And nobody on Twitter knew
they were talking about offensive coordinator. They thought they were
(09:01):
talking about like Nick Singleton or Ka Tron Allen. No,
they were talking about the OC. I love Gus Johnson,
but he must be stopped. He needs to be He
needs to retire from nicknames. It's done. The Maserati marv
nonsense was just insane. Everybody hated, like, it's cool if
(09:22):
you do it once. It's cool if you have it
once for a big game. But the nicknames have to stop. Gus,
just just call the game, bring the excitement. You're very
good at what you do. I don't need nicknames. I
don't need to hear the nicknames ten times over, especially
about the offensive coordinator. But I do think the offensive
coordinator of Penn State quoted Nikki. They brought in from
(09:42):
Kansas does bring a lot to that offense, and if
Drew Aller can throw the deep ball consistently, that's a
dangerous team. One that it's still James Franklin. So we're
not gonna say can't contend for the Big Ten title yet,
but if they can find a way to put it
together against top ten teams, it looks good, at least
(10:02):
on paper, looks pretty good in Week one. But that's
what James Franklin teams do though, So it's it's gonna
be interesting to see what happens with this new offense
against hiring teams.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
And the Penn State thing is similar to the Notre
Dame thing. I was making the case you could argue
that that was their second toughest game of the year
going into going into the year. Now you look at it,
usc looks like a tougher game down the road than
West Virginia was.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
And maybe West Virginia was a total fraud.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
But I think Penn State I was going into the
year saying they were the fourth best team in the country.
With how Oregon looked, I think you can make a
case that their third. I'm still I still wouldn't put
them above Ohio State, But like like earlier with Notre Dame,
the schedule they're out is not that daunting. I mean,
you assume maybe they lose to Ohio State, although that
game isn't Happy Valley, so maybe it's not stop.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
James Franklin from losing that game before.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
Of course, of course that's why I'm saying, let's assume
they lose it. Other than that, they're favored in every
other game going for this year, and less USC is,
you know, even more than we think they are. After
an impressive Week one win, I'd assume Penn State's still
favored in that game. So I think you're you know,
you're looking good. If you're a Penn State fan out there.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
I will start the stock down because you mentioned the
team that I had just put my stock down, the
Oregon Ducks. It takes a lot for you to win.
Look all say is this in the context of this,
It takes a lot for a team that's ranked top
three preseason to win and drop multiple spots in the
(11:35):
Apeople the next week. It was kind of jarring. Now,
I know Notre Dame one and I know all Miss
one in the way they did against Furman, So it's
it's understandable within the context of the top seven, but
to still drop four spots in the AP Top twenty five,
it's pretty jarring. People had the attention on that Idaho
(11:56):
Werrigan game. I know Sean Brace did. He was texting
us about I think he was on Idaho side it. Look,
is Oregon going to get it together? Most likely? Yes?
Is Boise Stay going to give them a scare this week?
Most likely? Yes? Ooh okay, I mean, look, that could change,
but it sounds like from week one Bois State coming
(12:18):
in with a lot of momentum. Oregon hasn't hit the
full gas yet. Look, there's still going to be a
very good team that needs to be driven home. But
in the context of week one dropping four spots in
the AP Top twenty five, and on top of that
your Big ten rivals, it sounds sounds really weird saying that.
But USC and Penn State had much better weekends than you.
(12:40):
And if we're shuffling the pack here one through five
and the Big ten, I mean it, you can power
rank Oregon maybe as low as five, depending on what
your thoughts are on Michigan after week one still early,
but I have to say right now is stock down
because it was not an impressive performance, especially compared to
everybody else. Who is your stock down in the context
of the college football playoffs.
Speaker 2 (13:02):
I'll go with Texas A and M. I did something
right before this, like ten things I learned from Week one,
and one of those ten things was Notre Dame has guts.
I mean, that was an insane environment that they walked into.
That was my big reason why I thought A and
M would win that game. I thought it was a
bad Week one spot for Notre Dame flat out. I
(13:22):
also only thought this A and M team was like
an eight and four type team. Wegman didn't really look
the part. And maybe at the end of the day,
that says more about how good the Notre Dame defense
is going to be this season. But to lose that
game at home, I mean, the social media gets overblown sometimes,
but the tiktoks, Instagram reels, Twitter videos of how insane
(13:43):
that environment looked, and for you to drop that game,
that's inexcusable. In my opinion, your home favorite in that one,
you should be able to come away with a victory
in that game. So I think the stock down for
sure for them. That defense is going to be strong,
That defense is gonna be tough. But to be one
of these top teams in the SEC, you're gonna have
to be able to score with Ole, Miss, Georgia, Texas
(14:04):
and and Alabama at the end of the day, and
I don't think A and M has the pieces to
do that.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
Mark who's your stuck down with college football playoffs?
Speaker 3 (14:12):
I feel like we kind of touched on it going
in because my stockdown was just.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
Gonna be the A CEC. There's a zero percent chance.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
You look at Clemson, they're Donzo, Virginia Tech Dunzo. NC
State didn't look great in Week one, and now you've
got Tennessee come into town.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
It's there's just not a lot to love.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Maybe Louisville if they, you know, got a nice win
against Notre Dame and then you know, maybe only lost
one or two games in the ACC, maybe they could
get involved in I think Miami looks.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Like just the clear favorite.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
I think they're gonna run through the conference and it's
I'll just kind of highlight kind of what we were
talking about with an M and SEC teams as opposed
to a team like Miami and Notre Dame and Penn State.
I think these SEC teams, the fact that they lost
these games, it pretty much ends their season. I know
everyone's doing like the oh I kind of hate ol
college foot. It doesn't end your season if you lose
(15:01):
in week one. Now, these SEC teams go look at
their schedules and tell me they're bouncing back from this
and only going to lose one more the rest of
the year. LSU, Texas A, and M Floria definitely. No
one's saying Florida is. But even LSU and Texas A
and M are not bouncing back from this and having
better than I think nine win seasons at best. I
think they're out of the playoffs, and maybe that sounds
(15:23):
crazy to some. But SEC schedules are different than these
other schedules we're talking about. And you mentioned Oregon.
Speaker 4 (15:30):
You have a five week They basically have a five.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
Week runway to just be fine. For Ohio State, I
think they're gonna be five to zero. You've got Boise, Ucla,
Michigan State, Oregon State.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
I don't think any of these teams are actually gonna
beat them.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
I know that maybe that sounds crazy because they Idaho
gave them a scare. They just have to figure out
what they are by the time.
Speaker 4 (15:47):
They have Ohio State in town.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
I think. So let's switch over to our stock ups.
Stock down for the Heisman odds are a little congested
over at DraftKings Sportsbook after week one. Dylan Gabriel from
Oregon is the favorite at plus eight hundred. Jackson Dart
huge week for ole Miss, albeit against Furman at plus
eight fifty, Carson Beck plus nine hundred, cam Ward plus
(16:09):
nine fifty, and we have jayaln Milroe at plus eleven
hundred and Nico I'm I can't. I'm frozen on the
last name. There we go. I was a little scared
in tentative to say plus twelve hundred. I'll start with you, Beef,
who is your stock up in the Heisman Race? After
(16:29):
week one?
Speaker 2 (16:30):
I'll go one of the tickets I'm holding at twenty
two to one. Now he's plus eight fifty. Cam Ward
the US. It's always going to come back to you
for me this year, I think. But that performance go
into the swamp. That was one of the more I
think pressure packs kind of kind of week one games
for both programs, both coaching staffs and ky Wore goes
in there and delivers some magic, and I think really
(16:53):
kind of puts himself out in center stage for it
for this college football season, because how many people really
we're staying up watching Wazoo play or even watched him
once at Incarnate Word a few years back. He's here. Now,
he's here in the ACC. And the Miami team looks
like they could be the real deal. So if they
(17:15):
are playing in this ACC that we say is as
bad as it's going to be, there is a legit
chance if that team goes undefeeded, and if they do,
he's gonna be putting up numbers and he's gonna be
right up there at the top. I think he's fourth
now in the Heisman ods. So kim Ward might stock
up for week one?
Speaker 1 (17:31):
Mark, who is your rising stock in the Heisman.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
I'll be honest, I'm shocked by those odds. I hadn't
checked them after week one. I'm shocked that cam Ward
and Nico, my guy for stock up, are not.
Speaker 4 (17:44):
The two favorites. To me.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
It seems like the big takeaways from Week one in
terms of a player for the Heisman are very clearly
cam Ward and Nico. I think cam Ward should probably
be the favorite. He did it on a bigger stage,
but it's hard to deny just how impressive Nico looks
every time you get eyes on them. And we haven't
seen it in a real environment yet. In the Bowl
game last year was kind of fake, but you watch it,
it looks real. Then you see it against Chattanooga obviously
(18:08):
not really a real game, but it looks real like
Nico looks like the real deal, and I think he's
going to be an electric factory and one of the
most exciting players in college football. We're going to get
a real kind of taste of what he is this
week against NC State that's obviously a real team, and
that's going to be a game that I think it
(18:28):
will find out a lot about both of those teams
in that game, maybe more than any other game on
the schedule.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
It's national stage too, so that number. Look, if he
has a really, really strong game and you really like Nico,
I would take him now.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
Yeah, I'm holding out the one I would still bet
at twelve to one.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
Yeah, but I guarantee you if he has a really
great game against NC State on the national stage, we'll
get into it a Week two isn't that great of
a slate. So there's two marquee games, one for Quinn
Yours to showcase himself, one for Nico to showcase himself
as well. The odds will will shift around a little bit.
I'll stick with the theme from stock up from the playoff.
(19:07):
If Drew Aller can throw the deep ball and throw
pass more than twenty five yards multiple times in a
game this season, his name will be mentioned in the
Heisman Trophy conversation. He's at plus twenty eight hundred right
now at DraftKings to win the Heisman. Look, Penn State's
going to be in the picture. They're gonna be in
the mix. And the one thing you wanted to see
(19:28):
from Penn State last year that really kind of screwed
them when it got to those big games was the
lack of a downfield passing game. We know they can run,
we know they can play defense, but the limitations that
Drew Aller had last season really hurt them. Now, look
still week one, but to go on the road at
West Virginia and not only to feel confident in throwing
(19:51):
those balls, but to complete some as well. And it's
not like he's got the best wide receiver corep in
the country. Look, he's still got very talented players, but
it's not like US or Ohio State. But I think
right now I would buy some stock and Drew Aller
for the Heisman Trophy just because I know Penn State
is going to be there. My stockdown is very controversial,
(20:11):
I think maybe, so I'll let you guys go first,
mark who is your stock down in the Heisman Race
after Week one?
Speaker 3 (20:19):
I'll just good Connor Wegman that this guy people were
trying to tell me was so good.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
He never threw for a thousand.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
Yards in his life before in the season, he never
won a big game against a good team. But I
will say he probably will look better against other competition.
I think Notre Dame has the top three defense with
Penn State and Michigan. Maybe Ohio State can have an
argument in there as well, but it's really about the secondary.
I think that secondary for Notre Dame is one of
(20:46):
the best, if not the best, in the country with
Xavier Watson Benjamin Morrison. So I basically just used this
as an opportunity to talk about Notre Dame's defense.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
B foods your stock down in the Heisman.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
I'm gonna call spade a spade and just say this
dude is a bomb kid Klubnick. I don't know how
he was even forty to one to begin the season.
After that game against Georgia, He's already down to one
hundred and twenty to one, like eighteen of twenty nine
four point seven yards per attempt. I mean, Kate Club Nick,
you get ready to learn transfer portal, buddy, because you're
(21:21):
you're headed to Aledo next fall. I think, I mean
the number two recruit in his class, Like, You're not
that guy, pal, trust me, Like, I think it's over
for Kate Clubnick. He also looks like DJ in terms
of kind of just a broken player. I mean, just
a guy that's never going to live up to the
stars next to his name. So, Kate Clubnick, take a hike.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
Stock down for sure, my stock down. If you have
a Shadur Sanders Heisman ticket, go burn it. He's not
winning the Heisman. Colorado is not that good. And even
if Colorado, even if Colorado is good, Travis Hunter is
by far the best player not only on that team,
(22:01):
but potentially in the entire country. And we saw that
on display on Thursday Night. There is no way on
God's Green Earth if Colorado has a successful season that
Shadur Sanders is going to be a better pick for
the Heisman than Travis Hunter. It's just not happening. It's
just not don't invest in Shadur Sanders. If you're gonna
(22:24):
invest in a Colorado player to win the Heisman, it's
Travis Hunter. Hell, he has even better odds right now
than Shaudur Sanders a plus twenty five hundred at plus
twenty two hundred. Not saying Shadure is a bad player,
but when you look at the impact on that team,
Travis Hunter's out there two ways. First of all, he's
making incredible catches. He made the catch of the season
already in Week one. And look, Travis Hunter is the
(22:48):
one that's bailing out Shadur Sanders. I mean, look, the
pocket presence not great. Colorado could have lost that game.
If a few things don't go their way, they they're
probably gonna lose the Nebraska. Colorado probably won't even be
in the Heisman Trophy discussion come November. But if there's
one guy on Colorado, it's going to be Travis Hunter.
It's not Sudur Sanders, cash out, burn your tickets. Whatever.
(23:12):
He ain't winning the Heisman, Well.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
Position do you guys think he should play in the pros?
So it's a really interesting conversation to me because people
are really starting to say maybe he should be a receiver,
because there's twenty one receivers that make more than the
top corner in the NFL. So the argument is, if
you can just be a good receiver, you make more
than being the best corner in football. And I think
(23:35):
he's probably a better corner than he is a receiver.
Speaker 4 (23:38):
Actually, I'll say I'll take that away.
Speaker 3 (23:39):
He is a better corner than he is a receiver,
even with how impressive he was last game.
Speaker 4 (23:45):
But it's gonna be really interesting.
Speaker 3 (23:46):
How do you think there's even some people saying he
might kind of do the Dion thing and play a
little bit of both, even if it means playing a
little less snaps on defense so he can play some offense.
Speaker 4 (23:56):
What do you guys think he does at the next level.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
I would play with receiver based off of the money.
I mean, it's it's pretty obvious. Look, corner, I agree
with that. Corners and receivers like look at Laka did
last year in round what five? He was one of
the top five receivers probably in the sport last year. Right,
And look to me, I think from a selfish decision,
(24:22):
I tell him to play receiver because look, he'll make
a lot of money in the NFL regardless of where
he plays if he if he keeps us up. I mean,
he's he's a top five draft pick based on talent alone.
You know he look the size not so great, but yeah,
pure right, but I'm pure talent alone, He's one. He's
one of the top five players in college football. It's
(24:43):
not even close.
Speaker 3 (24:45):
It's interesting because a lot of the conversation, the players
in that conversation legitimately might be corners. It's Travis Hunters
in that conversation. Benjamin Morrison at Notre Dame is going
to be a top ten pick next year. He's in
the conversation. And I think Johnson, Will Johnson is absolutely
in the conversation. He might be my pick for the
best player in college football right now. So the heck
(25:05):
of a year for cornerbacks in college football.
Speaker 1 (25:10):
So let's move on here. Let's get onto week two now.
The Week two is traditionally not so great on the schedule.
Week one is usually where all the headline makers are.
It's week two not as great as Week one. Texas
and Michigan is the marquee game. I think they said
all of the major pregame shows are headed up to
ann Arbor this weekend, and I don't blame them. A
(25:31):
big chance for quin Yours and Longhorns to prove themselves
on the road, but also a chance for Michigan to look.
Let's be honest, not a lot of people watch that
Michigan Fresno's TA game. It was kind of just an
afterthought at night everybody who's watching Notre Dames. This is
a chance for Michigan to really assert themselves and where
they stand in the hierarchy this season. And then Tennessee
(25:51):
and NC State is an interesting one because a lot
of people are going to go in to this game
thinking Tennessee is far and away the better team here.
NC State look fair or unfair? Has the ACC stink
on them now because of just how bad the a
SEC performed in Week one And it's like NC State played
played the best either, you know they got it. They
got a little bit of a test as well. So
(26:13):
start with Texas and Michigan spread. I believe is it's
seven still, just in terms of expectation for this game,
seven and a half over under his forty three. What
are you expecting out of this game, Beef? I'll start
with you and I guess which team do you think
has more pressure on winning this game.
Speaker 2 (26:36):
I'm expecting a dog walking in this one. I think
the longest okay walk the Wolverines up and down the field.
I just don't trust and I think everyone's rebuttal will
be Michigan did this last year without a passing game,
but JJ McCarthy went in the top fifteen picks for
a reason. I still think push comes up the shove
on a third down. He could go out there and
(26:58):
make you a play. I don't have faith Davis Warren
going out there and outdueling quin yours. I just don't
think they have enough firepower. You're gonna have to put
up points eventually in this one. You're not gonna be
able to hold Texas down the whole time. Does Michigan
have the firepower on a Texas defense that should be
pretty strong this year as well? To get to twenty points,
to get to twenty one points, that I think, even
(27:18):
with Michigan's defense being good, this is still not the
same group as last year. That team had fifteen dudes
go to the Combine last year, Like this is a
significant I think step back in talent. Sure, you might
have a guy like Johnson who's one of the top
five prospects, but you don't have the elite kind of
group of players that you did last year at and
they're not a seven point favorite here on the road
(27:41):
for no reason. I think this is a dog walkin
double digits, and I think Texas really makes a statement
in this one, and I think Michigan takes a step back,
not a Florida State esque kind of step back, but
I do think this is going to be like a
nine to three, eight and four team by November.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
I don't think anybody can take it as far as
a step back is Welly did at this point, Mark,
Are you the similar wavelength about Texas going up to
ann Arborn and blowing out the Wolverines.
Speaker 4 (28:08):
I hope Beef is right.
Speaker 3 (28:11):
I really really hope Beef is right. I hope this
is an embarrassing weekend for Michigan. There's something telling me
that they're going to be able to hold Texas back offensively,
and maybe this is like one of those weird games
that's kind of like ten to seven through the third quarter,
and then maybe Texas scores a little bit in the
fourth and we get like a twenty four to seventeen game.
(28:33):
I'm just a little bit worried that Michigan. I do
think Michigan's defense is still a top three, top five
unit in the in the sports. So obviously, Texas's offense
looked incredible Quinn, you weres looked, Austin even Arch look
good when he got in there. But I do think
Michigan's defense is a different level. Their offense has serious problems.
I mean, Colton Loveland, who's like a big time prospect
(28:55):
for Michigan, had tight end. He had eighty seven of
their one hundred and eighteen passing yards. That's pretty nuts.
Or eighty seven. He had eighty seven receiving yards of
their one hundred and eighteen passing yards. I said that poorly,
but it's gonna be interesting. The biggest thing here is
ken Texas run the ball, and they did it a
little bit. They didn't run the ball a lot in
that game, but obviously we know that they lost like
(29:16):
three running backs. That'll be kind of like the X
factor of this game if they can run against Michigan.
I won't be betting this one, but I will be
hookham horns for sure all week and long.
Speaker 1 (29:30):
Got I was given a premature horns last week by
my wife. We were talking college football's and she gave
the horns up and like, that's next week. Because you
hate Michigan. I just I just don't know the pass
to victory for Michigan. Maybe it's ten to seven, but
I think we're all in agreement Texas wins this game.
The half point kind of scaries because here's my thought here.
(29:53):
Texas I think is going to win this game. But
the only way Michigan does this is if Michigan is
really strong defense. But I can also see a world where,
like you said, beef, Texas goes into dogs walk dog
walks them and Quinn yours puts on a show. So
it to me, my gut says Texas will win. I
(30:14):
think if this number gets to seven or beneath it,
I will feel a lot more comfortable. But to me,
I have a little bit hesitancy embedding the seven and
a half just because I know what type of defensive
performance Michigan is capable of the offense. Mean, who knows
at this point, but maybe a defensive touchdown keeps him
(30:35):
in the game. But that's kind of all I got
with the hope for Michigan. The other game, though, Tennessee
NC State, I do have a strong conviction and that
I'm not scared by the seven and a half. I
think Tennessee blows them out of the water. I think
what we saw from Nico in a very small sample
size is real, and I think with NC State, I'm
(30:56):
never high on NC State ever, They're just a perpetually
eight win team. To me, I think Tennessee is gonna
roll them in this game. I don't think it's gonna
be close.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
Yeah, I've already I've already locked in Tennessee. I got
a minus seven and a half. I saw it's now
up to eight. I think SC State kind of fits
into that A and M category of like why were
they ranked? And also it might have just been like
what we had to rank twenty five teams and we
kind of saw, let's.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
Cut you off for a second. But the final four
three spots in the preseason top twenty five should be
for group of five teams.
Speaker 2 (31:31):
Yeah, but the NC State wasn't Carolina game. I don't
think anyone was writing anything home about how NC State
looked in that one. I think, like we just said,
by the end of the year, we're looking at an
eight wins squad with that team. And this could really
be kind of the because, I mean, people saw the
highlight clips of Nico, but no one was really fully
(31:53):
tuned into the whole game against the Chattanooga Max on
Saturday with all the other games on. This is his
kind of welcome to the big stage moment, and he
goes head to head with my guy Dylan as well.
So you're really kind of seeing the guys over the
next two years. I think that are going to be
right there kind of at the top as your best
quarterbacks on the sport.
Speaker 4 (32:15):
Yeah, I think Nico puts up a puts up a show.
Speaker 1 (32:17):
Here.
Speaker 3 (32:18):
It comes down to what the defense looks like for
Tennessee and what Grayson McCall can put up for NC State.
I'm not touching this one. I'm basically just this is
prove me you're a title contender, and prove me you're
like a legit like real deal playoff team. If you're
Tennessee and if they go out and they smack NC
State and Charlotte, they are that. In my opinion, I
(32:39):
will be fully taking them seriously going forward. And this
is one of those if you go out and take
care of business in two weeks, I'll take I'll hammer
Tennessee in Oklahoma because I'm already kind of eyeing that up.
As it's in Oklahoma. I think you might be able
to even get a discount because it's in Oklahoma and
Oklahoma will have not had a real test at that point.
I think Tennessee's a way better team than Oklahore. So
(33:00):
this is my before I get to load up on
Tennessee in a couple of weeks, prove it to me
here in Charlotte.
Speaker 4 (33:05):
Because NC State's a weird, a weird team.
Speaker 3 (33:08):
They look bad against bad teams, they get up for
certain games.
Speaker 4 (33:11):
So if Tennessee's real, they'll prove it here.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
There's how many times are we going to be like, sorry, Joe,
but how many times are we going to say going forward?
Over the next two years at least? Yeah, I think
Nico just puts on a show and Tennessee wins. I
feel like that's gonna just be, you know, a staple
coming out of everyone's mouth over the next two years.
Why are they gonna win? They have the best player
on the fields.
Speaker 1 (33:33):
This is gonna date myself. But NC State was always
the plucky Well, well, chuck them OUTO will beat Bobby
Bowden once every five years, and that's that's kind of
just what they are. They're they're plucky. They'll get to
a bowl game they're playing like the minu Key car
Care Bowl in Charlotte, Like that's kind of just what
their ceiling is. And every once in a while they'll
get to nine to ten wins. And look, even if
(33:56):
they lose to Tennessee, with the way the ACC has
just been blown wide open, Florida State stinks Clemson. I
still think Clemson will be okay because because of the
level of competitiveness in the ACC. But they're not elite.
And look, Mario Cristobaul is still good for one or
(34:17):
two clunkers each year. So look, it's it's very possible
that NC State. You know, we look back on this
on this game and it doesn't really matter, you know,
for their perspective in the ACC. I think in November,
you know, they could still be there, Louisville could still
be there. Hell, I mean, Boston College might be in
the mix. Georgia Tech might be there. I think that
(34:39):
the ACC is going to be very wide open, and
that's NC State's fight. The NC States fight is not
against Tennessee.
Speaker 3 (34:46):
My biggest concern about the ACC is I have a
large wager on Virginia under four and a half. And
they've got SMU on the schedule. They've got Virginia Tech,
They've got Clemson. All these teams I had shot up
as like a minus twenty against Virginia.
Speaker 4 (35:00):
Yeah, they all might stink. So I'll be sweating this
out all year with.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
Yeah, Virginia Tech, we didn't mention them at all. They
got a lot of preseason buzz and they ran into
the Diego paby a buzz saw. I mean, look, that's
that's about as bad as it gets. Losing to Vanderbilt
as a double digit favorite. I mean, my.
Speaker 3 (35:20):
Only gambling loss of the college football weekend to Diego
Pobby in New Mexico State, Uh, you know, playing in
the SEC, it's unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (35:29):
That's the SEC offensive Player of the Week that you're
talking about.
Speaker 4 (35:32):
Yeah, I'll put some respect on his name.
Speaker 1 (35:36):
I think we were all in our group chat at
some point willing Virginia Tech to try and get back
in that game, and it just it did not happen.
Kyrien Jones, Drones got hurt. I think a little bit at.
Speaker 3 (35:46):
The end they were up, and did they miss a
kick to knock or they were trying to kick to
go to overtime or what happened with that. Didn't someone
miss a kick in that game at the end?
Speaker 1 (35:58):
I think I think I think Vander missed a kick it.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
Yeah, it went to overtime.
Speaker 4 (36:04):
Yeah, yeah, I gave up on that one. Once I
had minus twelve and a half.
Speaker 2 (36:08):
I was like, I got him live. I got him
live at like plus two hundred and everything.
Speaker 1 (36:14):
They've hood they hoodwinked us.
Speaker 2 (36:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (36:16):
Rico Bosco from Barstool came on my show. He was
plugging Virginia Tech. Beef was plugging Virginia Tech.
Speaker 1 (36:23):
I think we were all drinking the kulid on Virginia Tech.
Speaker 3 (36:25):
I was buying in Drones is exciting when it's when
it's good, but man, when it's bad. Even before he
got hurt in that game, I think he actually had
pretty good numbers if you go look at his stats.
Speaker 4 (36:34):
In that game.
Speaker 3 (36:35):
But that's not what Yeah, there were long stretches where
he felt like he couldn't get anything going.
Speaker 1 (36:41):
Couldn't Yeah, it couldn't do a single thing across the
Week two slate. Look, I know there's a lot of
kind of okay games the late night slate. I'll tell
you what. The late night slate looks incredibly exciting. Uh,
Texas Tech plays Washington State. You have Mississippi State and
Arizona State. I believe USC is in the mix as
(37:02):
well against Utah State.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
You have.
Speaker 1 (37:07):
You have Oregon State, San Diego State, Arizona in the mix.
The Boise Oregon game is on Peacock. I mean, look,
the late slate has a ton of potential to be
fascinating across Week two. I guess I'll open the floor
to you, guys. Do any of those late night games intriguing?
One of them is just to fly out. I'm betting
(37:29):
the over and that's Texas Tech WAZU the Mike Leach
Memorial game. If the over doesn't hit that game, what
are we doing here? But to you guys, do any
of those late night games stand out.
Speaker 2 (37:41):
The Mississippi State Arizona State game is one that I'm
just kind of looking forward to because I think come
Week twelve, both those teams are like three and nine,
four and eight, but they both put off points in
week one. The offense is look pretty good Missippi State,
but like Eastern Kentucky, Arizona State did, it's to Wyoming.
But that's one I think it's it's like two teams
that your one of your best chances against a power conference.
(38:04):
They're gonna be going hard against each other. I think
we get some points in that one. I think that's
a fun one. And then I'm interested to see how
Oregon looks too, after how they did last weekend. Gentry
the running back for Boise State two hundred fifty yards
and six touchdowns. That's nothing to bad and I again
or bad, and I about so looking forward to that one.
I think we could see some points in that too,
(38:25):
and see if Gabriel and the offense is able to
get cooking a little bit more. In a second start, I'll.
Speaker 1 (38:30):
Open that up real quick to the Boise organ game.
It's nineteen points spread. Boise went back and forth with
Georgia Southern on the road. Important to note, although it's
completely different than onton stadium, still on the road. What
do you think of that game that spread noting that
Oregon did not have its best game in Week one.
Speaker 4 (38:53):
Points, Yeah, I don't have much.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
I think I expect Oregon probably to bounce back. I'm
not freaking out about Oregon, but I just had something
I want to touch on with Texas Tech Wazoo. Maverick Macavore,
the quarterback from Abilene Christian. Texas Tech again won in
overtime against Abline Chrishian fifty two to fifty one. Maverick
backword was the quarterback He had five hundred and six
(39:20):
yards against against the Texas Tech defense, which apparently has
defenses or has injuries all over the defense.
Speaker 4 (39:29):
So a lot of guys won't be back in terms.
Speaker 3 (39:31):
They had injuries before that game, and a lot of
guys got hurt in that game that won't be back
for this game.
Speaker 4 (39:36):
And then Washington State also gave.
Speaker 3 (39:38):
Up thirty to Prairie State or Portland State rather so,
Prairie State's a college basketball team, but they gave a
thirty to Portland State last week. I think you're right
on with that over. I actually think it should be
in like the seventies, to be honest. So both offenses
put up seventy and fifty two, So.
Speaker 1 (39:55):
I want that game to be in the seventies just
to honor Mike Leach properly. If a Texas Tech Wazoo
game ends up being a snoozer, I mean, what's what's
the point. What's the point of a late night game.
It's not it's not packed twelve after dark anymore. It's
whatever it is actually, but it's hupac. Yeah, we didn't.
Speaker 4 (40:18):
We didn't talk about what's going to be the most
watched game.
Speaker 1 (40:20):
Of the week though. Georgia Tech Syracuse.
Speaker 3 (40:23):
No Colorado Nebraska is going to be the number one game.
Speaker 1 (40:27):
Oh I thought I thought you were joking around.
Speaker 3 (40:29):
No, No, Colorado Nebraska is going to be the most
watched game. It's a big story in college football in
terms of He's the dean said, he's made it personal again,
and I think that's a bad decision because I think
that he might not want to take this result personally
because I think Nebraska is going to put a beat down.
I think Ryola is going to have a huge day
(40:49):
on that defense. I've been on record, I think Nebraska
is going to be seven to oher when they go.
Speaker 4 (40:55):
To play Ohio State, So let's.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
Go big Red.
Speaker 4 (40:59):
I think they're gonna lay it on him. I wish
the number was a little lower, makes it.
Speaker 3 (41:03):
It's gonna be such a squares verse sharp's kind of situation.
And I generally don't love being on the side of
every sharp in America because I feel like it doesn't
always go how we think it's gonna go. But man,
it's hard for me to envision anyway. Colorado's defense is
stopping Nebraska.
Speaker 1 (41:19):
I would actually take the under in that game, Okay,
the under fifty nine. I look, Colorado. The North Dakota
State game barely got over. That game came to a
screeching halt in the second half. I think there's gonna
be more turnovers with Sugar Sanders that the pocket presence
needs some work. Look, he's got incredible playmakers to bail
(41:40):
him out. But they'll bail you out against North Dakota State.
Can they bail you out against Nebraska? A much better
defense with more Division one talent. I think it's gonna
be an interesting matchup to see how he stacks up
against the Huskers defense that's gonna come fullboard him from
the start and inside Memorial Stadium, It's gonna be interesting
to see how Colorado just handles that entire environment. But
(42:04):
I think that the under is the play in the game.
I like Nebraska as well, but I think there's gonna
be some situations where Shoudrew Sanders is uncomfortable and look,
Riola is still a work in progress. It's only his
second college game. They're gonna be mistakes as well. I
don't expect the performance from him either.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
Yeah, when you look at Nebraska's defense, they held in
their last seven games last season, they held their opponent
to twenty or less than six of them. Like, this
is a really good defensive unit that just got better
as last year went on. And I think the speed
was the biggest thing for Colorado the other night. Those
(42:42):
guys can fly on the perimeter, but you're also playing
against an FCS opponent. This Nebraska defense is legit. I'm
more on the side of marked. I think Nebraska rolls
them at home. Last week was kind of like the
preseason game against UTEP. But this is your first kind
of big boy all eyes are on you game that
really could be kind of the you know Nebraska is
(43:03):
going to be a player this year and have a
legit shot to make some noise in the Big Ten.
Speaker 3 (43:07):
We should do a rapid fire thing at the end
of the week where we just say what our favorite
bet is right now going into the weekend. Because right
now I'm on Kansas minus five at Illinois. I just
think Luke Altmeyer stinks. I've been playing in Illinois since
last year. I'm all over. I know that line's going down.
People are betting Illinois. I'm all aboard the Kansas running game.
(43:28):
I think Jalen Daniels, whether he's a perfect passer or not,
when he's out there, Devin Neil and Hishaw average like
six seven yards of carry, so I just think they're
going to run all over them.
Speaker 1 (43:37):
Well, you jumped the gun, because I'm gonna get some
rapid fire thoughts on the way out for both of
you guys. Just on a few games. I know our
cards aren't completely finalized yet. We'll tweet them out during
the week, but there's a few half interesting games that
people will at least have some eyes on, or our
conference games in the power For that, I wanted to
(43:58):
get a quick thirty second thought on a handful of games,
kind of like the end of game day with picks,
but you don't have to give a pick out Arkansas
Oklahoma State. Does Arkansas stand any bit of a chance
to spread? Seven and a half? They looked really good,
but I was against what Central Arkansas. I think, I
think it's a game.
Speaker 2 (44:16):
I think I think that offense is actually going to
be impressive. Then when you look at Oklahoma State, the
offense is better than the defense. I think Arkansas is
gonna be able to put up some points. I actually
really like the over of sixty and a half in
that game.
Speaker 3 (44:29):
I like the over as well, but I'm on Oklahoma
State minus seven. I think Oklahoma State rolls. Since twenty seventeen,
they're four and oh straight up and against the spread
against non conference power opponents. Arkansas their first true road
game against the non conference power opponents since twenty sixteen.
Speaker 2 (44:44):
Just to frust it back Sam Pittman, twelve and six
since twenty Yeah, yeah, I was just taking that one
up earlier.
Speaker 3 (44:54):
I think I think like the early year or two
is doing a lot of the heavy lifting there after that, Yeah,
for sure there but yeah, I think this is an
Oklahoma State roll spot. I'm buying, you know, Oklahim State.
I loved how they looked last week.
Speaker 1 (45:07):
Georgia Tech two point favorite on the road at Syracuse.
Speaker 4 (45:11):
Why because Syracuse stinks. I watched that Ohio game.
Speaker 3 (45:16):
I know people are bragging about Kyle McCord putting up numbers.
Ohio was running the ball at will on that defense,
and it was a little bit closer.
Speaker 4 (45:24):
Than than people thought. At halftime.
Speaker 3 (45:26):
I think it was almost tied or maybe like a
one possession game. It was a closer game than you'd
think looking at the box score. So I'm on Georgia
Tech in that game, and it's not me backing Georgia
Tech and kind of scares me because I think a
lot of people will be on Georgia Tech winning that
primetime game against Florida State. But this is a fade
of Syracuse. I announced on my show I'll be fading
Syracuse the whole year. And I cashed my first bet.
(45:48):
Ohio covered against Syracuse. So we're going back to the world.
Speaker 1 (45:51):
I need you to bring some props next time. We
can bring like an orange and be like sorry Otto
and just like smash him on the floor.
Speaker 4 (45:57):
I'm out. I'm out. What's the Brian Kelly, I'll smack.
Speaker 1 (46:04):
Iowa. Iowa state. The over under is thirty five, a
tradition like any other here. Does this game go over
or does it stay under?
Speaker 2 (46:13):
I locked in thirty five and a half today because,
as we saw last year, that number every day goes
down for the Iowa games. I think four out of
the last five sy Hawk games have gone under this
and the average has been like twenty nine points. So
I'm going under like a seventeen to ten type game.
Speaker 4 (46:31):
I got nothing. I'm not touching that game. If you
watch that, go do something different with your Saturday.
Speaker 1 (46:37):
It's all sorts of gross and disgusting. I think I'm
going to bet the Cyclones though.
Speaker 2 (46:43):
Yeah, I like the Cyclones, so I think I'm a.
Speaker 1 (46:47):
I'm a big fan of the Cyclones in the Big twelve. Look,
I would look, I bet them last week. Betting Iowa
is a dangerous experience for everybody involved, especially in the
Syhawk when I was pretty pretty even with them in
terms of talent across the board. All right, any final
thoughts on the week two board for either of you. Look,
(47:11):
it's not a great week, but I think there's gonna
end up being some pretty decent games on the board.
Speaker 3 (47:16):
I think we touched on all my picks besides Kentucky.
I'm taking Kentucky minus ten against South Carolina. I'm I'm
only on favorites this week, which makes me nervous and
I feel like I had a really good week last
week and identified a couple underdogs to like in big numbers.
But I think this is going to kind of be
(47:36):
like a bounce back spot for the favorites.
Speaker 4 (47:38):
A little bit.
Speaker 3 (47:39):
So you look at how bad South Carolina was last week,
and that's really what this is based on more than
anything with Kentucky. Although I had the thing last week
coming into Week one where I thought, maybe we're underrating
Kentucky a little bit, and I think we were. Brock
Vandergriff looked pretty good. I think they're gonna be better
than people think, but it's probably more about South Carolina.
They looked absolutely horrible against Old Dominion, barely won twenty
(48:03):
three to nineteen, le North Sellers ten for twenty three
passing the ball. Rocket Sanders, supposed to be their best player,
twenty four carries for eighty eight yards. They couldn't get
anything going good on offense. So give me Kentucky to
lay it on South Carolina.
Speaker 1 (48:17):
There be if your final thoughts in Week two.
Speaker 2 (48:20):
Penn State minus thirty four and a half. Think they
put it on Bowling Green at home. Oklahoma minus twenty
nine and a half. I think it's a fate of
Houston all year.
Speaker 1 (48:30):
They're bad.
Speaker 2 (48:32):
Yeah, and I know they were playing Temple last week,
but the Oklahoma defense I think is going to be improved.
And then I'm looking at USC team total over I
didn't see official number yet, but Utah stayed at home.
I think they laying autumn in that one. And uh yeah,
Texas minus seven The dog Walk off the Week.
Speaker 1 (48:49):
The dog Walk of the Week. I love it for
Mark Henry Junior, Ryan Coy, I am Joe Tansey. Check
