Speaker 1 (00:00):
That's welcome to the program. Hall of Famer. The coach
color analysts Undy Football, Mike Berg.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Morning, Mike, Good morning to you.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
Good morning, coach.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
How about your nights in the Cushman Classic.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
They played well, it was It was a beautiful night
for high school football, and very excited for the for
the outcome, and really excited to see both sides of
the stands filled. Yeah, I mean that place was full,
and that's that's the way it should be. So thumbs
up to the city of Grand Forks and the support
(00:36):
for both teams.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
Very nice, very nice.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
And now it's playoff. Now it's playoff football for both teams.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Yeah, going to going to Devil's Lake for Central and
going to Minot North for red River. So it speaks
it speaks well for football in this town when both
of the local high schools are in the playoffs. I mean,
that just gives the young guys on both ends of
town something to look for and look forward to. And it's,
(01:05):
you know, hopefully establishing a pattern.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Good old roller Field, You've known things to be difficult.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Thanks, you had to ruin this conversation early.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Well, we just know it's just some of the stranger
things happen some of the you know, you just it's
never easy. It doesn't matter what it is, it's just
it's just really hard. There to their credit and uh,
I know you. I mean you have the scar tissue
to show it, sadly, so.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
You had nothing good to bring up today?
Speaker 3 (01:41):
No nothing, No have good? Yeah, they do, I've got Hey,
it's a great supported venue by the community, and they'll
it will be a tough atmosphere and you know, you
want to you want to be playing in that at
this time of year.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Well, when you're the home team, you want to have
that home court advantage. And they do, and they do
come out and support their team. They're always tough. They're
kind of actually, Devil's Lake is kind of like the
way I view Central, kind of tough blue collar kids that'll,
you know, maybe a little undersized at times, but they'll
stick you.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Oh yes, yeah, yeah, And that's what it's all about basically.
And yeah, nothing comes easy at this time of year
when you make the playoffs. If you if you advance,
you've really earned it, You've really done some nice things.
So we'll see how the Grand Work schools. Hey, you
mentioned thiefa revolves former head coach, longtime head coach honored
here recently at a U and D football game and
(02:42):
then obviously different revolves. Right now, I having a great run,
surprising run to their section championship game, speaking of area.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Football, right, kind of kind of surprising. They didn't have
an overwhelming regular season, but got into the playoffs, played
well and I think they're playing in the Fargo Dome
on their next Uh they played DGF which is never easy. Yeah,
but yeah, Jeff Mom was honored on Saturday with the coaches. Gosh,
(03:11):
now the name escapes me, but uh yeah, I well
earned deserving award for for Jeff Mum and recognition of
a long and successful career at the revol Well.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
You knew you've known him for a long long time.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
So oh yeah, yeah, yeah, he's he's one of the
good ones and has I think is held in very
high esteem amongst his peers in this area and across
Minnesota for sure.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
And speaking of high school football, before we even get
to you, Andy, it's the old clash coming up here
on Thursday with with Stephen Hergile and Kitson County Central
clashing to see who gets to the state tournament field
that that's that's not unusual, is it? For Section eight.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
That's kind of a resurrected game right there. I'm in
back remember the days, and they were both so strong
and had those really epic clashes, and so yeah, it
speaks well for football in Northwest Minnesota. And yeah, those
those two communities will show up for that one.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
I would say.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
So yeah, okay, tell me what time did you go
to bed last night?
Speaker 2 (04:24):
You know what, I made it until the ninth inning. Okay,
so at five to five, I thought, you know what,
me watching it isn't going to change the outcome. You
got to get some sleep. So it looked like I
didn't think it would go two full games, eighteen innings,
but yeah I made it to the ninth. Well, yeah,
(04:47):
again you see Otani do something historical. It's just if
he comes to the play. I mean, finally, the Toronto
manager just gave up pages walking. I'm not so sure
he wouldn't walk him with the bases loaded just to
walk him.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Well, yeah, he's a special guy, right.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
He has to be. I don't know that there's ever
been a better overall baseball player, and I believe he's
pitching tonight. So yeah, I mean, it's it's just one
of these, one of these situations where this this guy
brings skills to the baseball diamond that have never been
(05:27):
seen before.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
No doubt.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Enjoy it while it while it's.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Here, right, Yeah, absolutely, And I'm so happy he's doing
it with the with the correct LA team and not
still on the Angels.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
I was going to say, you, Indy football again picks
up another win on Saturday against Indiana State. Jerry Kaminski obviously,
I think coach Schmid has talked about it in the
in subsequent visits with the media following the game, and
you know that. You know, Jerry obviously threw some touchdown
passes in that one, but it was really his connections
(06:01):
on second and long, third and long to keep the
offense on the field. That is the feather in the cap,
so to speak, for Jerry Kaminski in this U and
the offense right now being able to convert down on
some maybe longer down in distances than they wanted, really
makes a difference in a game, doesn't it.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
His marching orders going into that game was to keep
the offense on the field, disregard the down in the distance,
keep the offense on the field. You do what you
have to do to move the chains, keep the offense
on the field, and I would say he did that
pretty darn well, yes, and so it's great to see.
(06:43):
I mean, he has some weapons and they make plays
when they need to, and he's doing a lot of things.
I think we expected him to be a very good,
solid quarterback, but I think he's risen to the elite
status within the Missouri Valley Conference with a couple of
other quarterbacks, but he's right there. There is very little separation.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Well speaking, isn't that funny? Yeah? That how it started
out trying to figure out who was going to be
the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
J I mean he had to compete. They started competing
on you know when when spring practice started and really
even the last season, and so he separated himself from
the pack. He earned the start, and he seems to
be pretty bound and de termined. He's not only going
to keep that position, but he's going to lead this
(07:34):
team pretty deep. And so it's great to see.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
Speaking of quarterbacks that are good, Obviously, Aiden Bowman, who
is Todd Bauman's son, who had a good run in
the NCC himself, is the quarterback who's been the longtime
starter at South Dakota. They took it on the chin
last week. I'm not sure that's good for you and
d they're on high alert now. But really, you know
(07:58):
that the Almond kid for South Dakota is just a
super talent. Speaking of good quarterbacks, he makes good decisions
for that team a lot, and certainly will have North
Kota's full attention defensively on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Yeah, they have offensive weapons. They have I think the
leading ground gainer in the conference in the backfield might
be the leader in the nation or top two. And
so they run the ball a lot, play action, pass,
boot leg, quick stuff. I don't know that he has
the downfield receivers that kind of had last year the
(08:35):
year before, but yeah, he's again coming into the season.
You mentioned South Dakota. Immediately you go to Bauman being
any one of those elite quarterbacks. Just a little different
style than what we've seen, but can do anything on
a football field, can certainly put the football anywhere he
wants to, no.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Doubt about that. Yeah, that's exactly right. Okay, Tim, what
do you got upper coach draws?
Speaker 1 (09:01):
I'm going to say he's different. You said, how do
you adjust to that.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Yeah, Well, first of all, I think the un D
defensive game plan is always good. Week by week, they've
come up with a with a great they you know,
they're they're facing top quarterbacks, especially the top athletes every week. No,
two offenses are exactly the same. If if you looked
at South Dakota's they're run heavy, but their play action
(09:33):
pass r PO these things are very successful. But their
passing game comes off the running game, and ideally that's
what UND does. Establish a downhill run and then throw
a play action and RPO off of the run. So
they use a lot of formations. But he's left handed,
he's kind of he's not built like more compactly like
(09:57):
you've seen some of these quarterbacks recently. He's tall, kind
of not gangly at all, kind of looks like a
wide receiver on the field that he's you know, he's
he's able to scan the field. And what Paul said,
he's been starting there forever. He's like he's been there
as long as those Yankee guys or at South Dakota State,
(10:17):
those receivers, I mean saw them for like twelve years
on the field. They started playing there when they were eight.
I believe. So it's like every time you've talked about
South Dakota in recent seasons, it's a moment. Yeah. So no,
it's and he's.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
Good, no doubt about it. And North Dakota with that
big dangling carrot, I mean, is super motivation to continue
to check boxes said. You know, South Dakota's motivation is
they want to stay in the picture too. So it's
it's it's meaningful football as we turn the page on
the calendar and get into November with an added bit
of state state rivalry and all that other good stuff
(10:55):
and the history between the two programs and other meaningful meetings.
So it's what you want, and I'm excited for it.
So yeah, let's do it.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Tough place to play, I mean, they do support well
there and they've been good, and it's you know, the
upcoming schedule. I know that coach Schmidt and the staff
they don't look beyond one week at a time, but
they're they're into a part of their schedule now where
they need they can't slip up anywhere, and then so
(11:26):
their expectations they go down and play their best game
of the season this week.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
No doub't. I mean, what a great chance, what a
great opportunity. Appreciate you touching on all of it, including
me bringing up source subjects and stuff. But maybe this
Central Lights team will go out there and have a
great Friday night in Devils Like. But yeah, you handled
it very well. We look forward to seeing you down
in Vermilion on Saturday, and let's hope we're coming back
(11:55):
with smiles on our faces. Thanks coach, you have a
great rest of your week.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
Okay, thanks guys, there you go.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Uh Mike Berg, Avid Dodger fan,
