Speaker 1 (00:00):
The coach, the color analysts for you indie football, Mike Berg.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Good morning, Mike, Hey, gentlemen, good to talk to you.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
There we go again.

Speaker 3 (00:11):
Your phone device sounds glorious. Let me just say that.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
It is a dandy. Ye can't be without a phone
for too long nowadays.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Is it one of those smartphones? Did you they get
you into one of those smartphones? Now that.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
I was smart enough to stay with a flip phone?

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Okay, all right, yeah, we know.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
What do I need a smartphone for? And I have
like three computers at home. I need one in my
pocket too, I don't think, so okay.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Fair enough? I thought I just double check.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
We we had a backup phone on the trip over
the weekend, and by Sunday he said he had had
gotten the new one ready. And and they're like, sure,
we have had this flip phone sitting here for a while.
You're the perfect person to come get this next one.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
So hey, there's a line of people trying to get
flip phones. The better get one before they go up
in price.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
That's exactly right. Okay, Well, I mean my feeling, and
I was trying to convey this to Tim yesterday. He
thought I was being a little finicky, But I guess said,
you know, it wasn't a perfect game by North Dakota,
But what I was trying to convey was is that
I was just impressed that I thought they took a
step in handling moments where maybe it affected previous teams

(01:27):
and you know where the game, if you didn't score
in the red zone with a great opportunity, it affected things.
Or if you didn't take or if you had a turnover,
it affected things, and you know those types of things.
I thought that this North Dakota team, at least on
that day against Northern Iowa, that was a step forward
for them. Is the way they managed some of those
early miscues and missteps. They they didn't let it affect

(01:51):
them and they were able to play a very solid
game from there.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Oh, I would agree, they missed two early scoring opportunities
and they just like you said, just shrugged it off
and moved on. I think they felt very confident going in.
They had a good game plan, both sides of the ball,
knew exactly what they wanted to do, and I think
they were confident. So that's the mark of a team

(02:17):
I think that can because sometimes those things they do
come back to haunt you. And there was never that feeling.
I don't think any you, myself or Jack ever felt
even after those missed opportunities like oh boy, here we
go again.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
Tim Well, you got the road win though, And was
that that big a deal for the guys, do you think, Mike.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Well, I don't know. You know. I think Eric addressed
that rosters change. There weren't a lot of guys on
that roster that knew anything about difficulty on the road.
There are a lot of guys traveling for their first
time this season, there are new players on the team,
and I don't think they're greatly affected by what's happened

(03:01):
in the past. I really don't. I think sometimes in
the media, we you know, need something to talk or
write about, so we bring it up. But I don't.
I don't think so. And so I will say you
and I's success in their building is similar to what
un D's has been in their building. That is not
an easy place to win a football game, and teams

(03:25):
have shown that over the years. I mean, their record
is phenomenal. I think Paul even mentioned before the game,
like at the top of the program, it you know,
listed like you know, seventeen playoff appearances and ten conference
championships and you know whatever, all this all this stuff
that's happened in that building, and you and he just
went in and put a knob on them.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Yeah, and again, Jerry Kaminski wins the Missouri Valley Football
Conference Offensive Player of the Week honers yesterday, and and
Jerry did so many good things. And you know, you
talk to Jerry and he's like, boy, though, I was
glad to get in the film room because I just
see where we can even take more steps. And that's
such a coaches kid in regards to Jerry and his

(04:08):
approach to this business, because you know, he had a
very solid game, made good choices. And I think at
the very least, if you're coach Frickty, if your coach Schmidt,
as long as your quarterback is making the proper choices,
not every play is going to be a game breaker,
but if he's making good choices more often than not
in four quarters of football, that's going to give you

(04:30):
your team and your offense a lot of chances to
win on a given Saturday. And I just like where
he's at right now. What do you think?

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Yeah, I think if Jerry ever got too full of himself,
he'd get a call on his flip phone from Daddy.
He'd straighten him out. Right. Now, that's not him at all.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Right.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
He is a team player. He's humble. He gives credit
to the people around him, but he just goes out
and does his job. We've seen him get better and
better and better week in week out. You know. He
interviewed after our interviewed on Monday. His comment was, we
thought we could score every time we went out there. Well,

(05:12):
I want a quarterback think in that way. And because
that gets passed on to the rest of the of
his teammates. Certainly the guy I would say in the huddle,
but they don't huddle. Certainly the guys on the field
feel that, and so they have confidence. And you know,
it's a game of momentum. Things become contagious, both good
things and bad things. Yeah, and right now the good

(05:35):
things are becoming contagious.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
Before Tim jumps in with one, I got one last
one here, and that regards our upcoming opponent, I said,
you know, I haven't seen Youngstownes every game, but I've
watched them enough that I would have them ranked. I
think they're that good, and so the opponent coming in
on Saturday is a big time opponent that has just

(05:58):
as much of an idea that they should be part
of the FCS playoffs by seasons en. That's what they're
targeting as well. They have a team that can possibly
do it, and so that's going to shape up for
a Saturday slugfest if you ask me at the Alair Center.
That's my take on that one.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
I would agree from what I've seen on film and
what I've read, they are probably not happy that they're
not ranked somewhere. I would say they're getting the feeling
that they're being disrespected. So I think they'll come in
with a chip on the shoulder and they have the
capability of certainly walking out of that building with a win.

(06:38):
They have a new offensive coordinator and the things that
they do on offense. The guy that might have the
toughest job all day Saturday is Jack Michaels trying to
identify what formations they're in. When he starts talking about
how they're lining up, I mean, you better be on
your toes over there on the sideline too, because they're
going to be everywhere.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
Paul, Yeah, Tim, what do you got for.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
They do a lot of what what do they do?

Speaker 2 (07:02):
Oh boy? They have formations, motions, movements. They'll they'll sit
put two tight ends in the backfield with a kind
of an inverted wishbone which most teams now they call
a cone formation, and two split ends. They'll go multiple
formations and special teams. They I think their quarterback is
their leading ball carrier. So yeah, as far as Carrie's

(07:25):
nan yard each so you have to account for him
on every play. They just do a lot of things
and I think probably the defensive coaches are going to
be are going to just have a lot to identify
and recognize so you're at least lined up in the
right place.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
Well, and you said about you know Jerry Kaminski, and
he's coming along nicely and has the right level of
approach a week after week here through early in his
career of on the field play. But you know Broongard
for Youngstown State. We saw him last year and he's problem.
I mean, he just he's a fearless player. Can't tackle him, Yeah,

(08:04):
I mean he's a fearless player and even when you
do have a chance, usually he slides out of bounds
before you can get him down and and so he's
always still feeling good. And he's just a strong kid too.
And it's when he it's unscripted ejections from the pocket
that really puts you to the sword. We saw that
a year ago. So having a quarterback of that level

(08:24):
play with that type of confidence, and I think he's
a better passer this year from what I've seen. He's
he's really high level of what they're bringing in on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Well, he is. And you're right. The frustration there is
you want to hit the quarterback. I mean, that's that's
part of your defensive mentality. Can't hit the guy. Yeah,
you know, he has just has seems to have these
instincts and when he gets in trouble, he gains yards
and then he slips out of bounds and you can't
hit him. And so you need to be disciplined and

(08:55):
make sure you're not hitting him late or that you
are so intent on hitting him that you give up
your responsibility. So he's he's a problem. He definitely is.
And you know people that are thinking, well, this should
be an easy one, a home game against the team
we don't know much about whoa this is a good
football team. This will be a good football game on Saturday.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
All right, Tim Good, I'm gonna switch it to baseball
for us a little bit.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
How about those Dodgers? Huh?

Speaker 2 (09:23):
How about him? You win two in Philadelphia, which you
know you'd be happy to come out of there with
a split. And so the one last night was was interesting.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
I you know that ninth inning in particular, Freddie Freeman,
you know you always think of him winning ball games
at bat Well, he saved a ballgame in the field
last night basically in coming up with a low throw
at the end of it. They find a way, and

(09:56):
they're kind of one of those teams that seems to
believe when they get in the postseason that belongs to them.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
You just wonder how a second basement can't make that throw.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
We knew a guy on the Twins here we go here.
Something that bothers me is I'm seeing guys that weren't
good enough to stay on the Twins playing in the playoffs.
They could have used a fee of those guys. But hey,
I just.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
Really really quick. I understand that you were quite devastated
when you learned that the Astros had missed the Major
League Baseball playoffs.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
This year when the Astros didn't make it and the
Padres got eliminated, not much better can happen, you know,
I mean, I know you're not supposed to be negative,
but I still hold a grudge with the Astros. If
the Baseball Commissioner would like to do the right thing
and revoked that trophy that they are so proud of,

(10:57):
and then you know, put it in the right place.
And then if the Padres would get rid of their
little pink and green uniforms and play manly baseball, oh yes,
I love it. There's ground to be made up there. Yet, Hey,
I don't worry about those teams. I'm a Dodger guy.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
Before I let you go again, a guy that you
know played for you, and we have to talk about this.
It's an exciting week ahead for Grand Fork Central football.
A Number one. They're having a great season. They continued
that over the weekend, your former player Ryan Kosowski, now
a coach in his own right as the head coach
at East Grantfork Sunior, I picked up a key win.

(11:38):
And yet it's all about Grand Fork Central because it's
the celebration of the state championship here coming up this
week with Grand Fork Central Football. You know, you get
to see hopefully many many guys. I got to know
that program as I was calling all the high school
games back then. It was some of my favorite time

(12:00):
doing broadcasting. And that was a special group. Actually, there
was a handful of years where it was all special
and that one got across the finish line. And that
will be quite neat to get as many guys back
for that as you can.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Yeah, yeah, reunion Friday night. We're going to introduce the
team as a group before the kickoff and I hopefully
a lot of them. We've done everything we can to
reach out and touch base with players, managers, cheerleaders, coaches,
anybody that was you know, in that program, and so
looking forward to it. There's a lot of guys that

(12:34):
have been working hard to make this a special night
and we'll have a little social afterwards. So yeah, it's
those are neat times.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
I was going to say, I just it's hard to
believe it's gone so fast, and these these are people
now that are well into having their families and their
professional careers and their kids are now playing and sports
and activities. But that was a special time by a
special group and a bunch of good coaches as well.

(13:02):
And I hope that you guys have a wonderful, wonderful weekend,
is including Friday evenings. So appreciate this coach, And do
you guys have well, you have a great rest of
your week, and we'll see a Saturday.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Okay, I'll be there.

Speaker 3 (13:15):
Okay, that sounds good. All right, Mike Berg joining us
here on this Tuesday morning. But that state championship team
twenty years. Hard to believe that it's gone that fast,
but they're getting together and they should and they should
and East Grand just did it last year and really

(13:36):
really was a wonderful time for high school football and
it kind of has that feel again, Tim Maybe I
don't know, it's been fun. You never know. That's exactly right.
So our thanks to Mike Berg joining us yet again
on as he does on each and every Tuesday,
