Speaker 1 (00:00):
Working our way through a Tuesday a Veterans Day November eleventh,
twenty twenty five, and on Tuesdays we visit with the
color analyst of North Scota football broadcast on the Fighting
Hawks Radio Network. It's Mike Burg.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Good morning, coach, Good morning to you, Paul.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Great to hear from you and my friend and colleague.
And you know, I've been talking about Veterans Day as
as we have an acknowledgment of that. Today, take taking
a moment to recognize so many of those that have
served within our armed services and served for this country,
either in conflict or not during peacetime, but serving all
(00:37):
the same on this Veterans Day that got it started
as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day in other places of
the world. So Coach, you know you've known many of
those that you taught in school that went on to
serve in our nation's armed forces, and certainly you realize
the commitment the sacrifice that goes along with that. And
(00:59):
you've had many student athletes that you've coached at high
school that their parents were working and living and serving
at the Grand Forks Air Force Base, So you certainly
know about Veteran's Day as anybody would correct.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
The culture of Central High School for many years has
had a military component to it, I guess you would say.
And we've had so many kids over the year years.
You know, one year they were playing in Greece or
Turkey or Alaska or Hawaii or something, and then they
(01:34):
end up coming here for maybe their senior year or
somewhere along the line. So, yeah, a close connection in military,
and a lot of those kids then went ahead after
high school and enlisted in all of the branches, and
so yeah, there's been a real military presence at Central.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Yeah, it is something that you're well aware of in
those circumstances where, yeah, they've traveled over the world, as
you mentioned, sometimes and then maybe this is their last
stop of high school. Certainly unique, but certainly to be
celebrated by those that are serving in their families and
how they go along for the ride as well. So
on this day we certainly take a moment to both
(02:14):
celebrate our veterans, remember our veterans, and thank them for
their service, although we should probably keep that in mind
as many days as possible, because that's what makes this
country great. That is for sure. I echo your sentiment there.
I would just say U and D football. I talked
to coach Schmidt yesterday a little bit on this program,
(02:36):
went to his press conference yesterday. Coach, and you know,
he's just like anybody, he's frustrated. They wanted that one.
You know, they want everyone every game, just like the
week prior. So it's been a bit of a two
week difficulty for North Dakota football. And you know, I'm
kind of curious how this team responds here. I know
that everybody's looking at Marie States record and I'm saying, hey,
(02:59):
you got to win a football game. It doesn't matter
who we're playing. You got to win a football game
on Saturday, bar none. I don't care what the scorer
is or what it shows or who plays. Northgota has
got to figure out a way to win again. And
that's not always easy sometimes after you've kind of had
a couple of tough weeks. So what do you think, Coach, Well.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
U and D's had a tough couple of weeks. And
the first thing I will say is they've played a
couple of very good football teams m M. And if
you look at Murray State, they've had a difficult season.
They're playing those same teams, right, and so you say, well,
they're not you know, they're struggling. Well, part of the
reason they're struggling is who they're playing. And then there
(03:37):
are some very strong teams in this conference, and I
think you would be use amongst them. But there is
no way anybody in that program is taking Murray State lightly.
I just literally minutes ago came from their team meeting,
and they are approaching this as if it's the most
important game of the season, which actually it is. It is.
(03:58):
The Yeah, this is huge, and in looking at film
of Murray State, particularly their offense, they have some skilled
players that they've had some injury issues and they've had
some depth depth issues, but their starters are pretty darn good.
They've been productive on offense, they do a lot of
different things, and it's going to be a full week
(04:20):
of preparation for NB.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Yeah, no doubt about it. One of the things a
couple of people have asked me since Saturday's game, and
actually for the last couple of weeks is, you know,
Jerry Kominski's had a couple of tough ones really by it,
you know, by his standards of what he kind of
was doing early in the season. But I also said, hey,
you know, a first season for a starting quarterback is
(04:43):
going to have a few ebb and flows. We've we've
seen what Jerry Kaminski at his best is and maybe
it hasn't been quite to that level the last couple
of weeks, but there's nothing to say that he can't
get there again. And that's just I would say. I
put it down to a little bit of growth and
understanding how teams also change a little bit and how
(05:04):
they decide to play him. And so that's the game
within the game and the growth of Jerry Kominsky. What
do you think?
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Yeah, understand, every team gets the film of every game
that their opponents have played. So people coming into the
last two weeks, they had eight games of Kaminski and
then they had in the issue had nine games of Kaminski. Understand,
the kid has still played ten college football games. Yeah,
(05:31):
so he is not exactly a grizzled veteran at this point.
He's he has to learn his craft and it doesn't
come easy. And then as we've looked at you know,
I'm sure folks would look at the interception, the touchdown ratio,
It started out what twenty two touchdown passes, two interceptions
in the last two weeks. It hasn't been pretty whatsoever,
(05:53):
but some of those interceptions are an inch or two
away from being big plays. He's learned from those. I mean,
he's he would be the first to tell you he's
not happy with some of the plays he's made, and
he puts it on himself. I just think he needs
to settle down and be Jerry Kaminski. Run the offense,
Run the play that's called, don't think too much, don't
(06:15):
read more into it than there. Take what's there. And
I'm sure that's the message that Isaac Frickt he has
with him, is say you're our guy. Just relax and
run the play, don't don't you know if it's If
it's not there, we do have a punter, right, you
can come in the game and we'll we'll get the
ball back. Take what's there, and and don't you know,
(06:36):
make plays that aren't able to be made. It's and
you know again, I I'm not ready to throw him
on the trash pile and move on. I mean, I
still think when he's on, when he's playing his best,
he is amongst the best in the league.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
I completely agree with you. And the other thing that
sometimes gets lost. You know, NDSU's defensive front was very good.
I don't know that if you were to say to
Northcote's offensive line, they did some nice things, but also
probably could have been a little bit better that day.
And you know, fraction cleaner pocket at times that also
disrupts a quarterback. And then you know, you know, receivers,
(07:13):
and if you listen to coach Frick Dye and coach
Schmidt early in the season, they're saying, you know, we
have some talented receivers, but we were still growing with them.
You know, all of them across the board. Got to
continue to figure out way to win routes, run them
more precisely, also get more get to the right depths
on routes and all those things. So it's not just
on one guy. I always say when it's an offense
(07:35):
that runs in a system and everything's kind of got
to be clicking. So it's not how it's easy to
just say, oh, quarterbacks having a tough go, and that
might be part of it, but I think it's it's
sometimes when you look at the picture in its entirety,
bringing in other parts of the offense, you got to
look that way as well. So I think sometimes it's
easy to be too myopic. What do you think?
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Yeah, I think anybody who's a football you could give
them a pencil and a paper and they could sit
down and draw some great plays, pass routes and whatever.
That's the easy part. Can you block it? You know,
we can put these guys going here there and doing
this and doing that. Can you block it? And that's
where it all starts, on the line of scrimmage. And
(08:19):
so absolutely no excuses made by you and D. I
never heard one person or I've seen it one guy
since Saturday pointing a finger make an excuse. But have
you ever known in the last two decades for NDSU
not to have a pretty good defense, right, and most
often a very good defense. I mean they send guys
(08:42):
literally to the NFL pretty much every season, and I
thought their linebackers were exceptional the other day that they
you know that you can't get them out of that
four man front. They get some guys there that play
very well, and there were times they whipped that offensive
line for U and D or other times where you know,
we saw sow your sidle stroll into the end zone.
(09:05):
Untouched on a play, well, somebody had to be blocking.
So again, it's consistency. It's it's play calling, it's being
in the right play at the right time and executing
so and yeah, receivers, you're supposed to win every one
on one battle, not once in a while. You're supposed
to win every one on one battle. And that's what
it comes down to. I don't care if they're playing
(09:26):
zone or Manda Man. It's still it's always Manda Man. Yeah,
don't matter. There's somebody on you. So I don't care
what the defense is called. All defense and all past
defense is Manda Man. At some point, well, you gotta
beat that guy. Yeah, and so don't don't tell me,
you know, yeah I will next time. No, this time,
beat the guy right.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
Defensively, my takeaways over the last two weeks is some
of the guys that you India has come across that
they've had to tackle, they've actually tackled pretty well most
of the time. That running back for South Dakota ran
about as hard even when he had both legs wrapped up.
I've never seen a guy run harder with both legs
(10:09):
wrapped up than that guy. And for North Dakota that
I mean, they battled their tails off in order to
get him to the ground sometimes, and I thought that
it showed well into the game against NDSU buying large.
North Dakota in a lot of aspects tackled well. They
had to against Cole Payton oftentimes. And if they bring
that the very simplest of terms the rest of the year,
(10:31):
whether it's Murray Stade or whoever they play the rest
of the way, if they bring that get to the
football multiple guys, We're gonna get you down to the ground.
I think this defense will give North Dakota great chances
to have positive results.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
What do you think? Yeah, I really like this defense.
I really like the way it's played this season. Overall,
you would give it very positive marks. Again, you mentioned
the last two weeks, you've seen two exceptional ballplayers that
nobody can get on the ground. And so the South
Dakota running back really something special, something that you don't
(11:08):
see often. A kid like that. Don't like that that
you just don't get down and everybody bounces off of
Cole Taytan. Yeah, one person doesn't bring him down. We
didn't see that a couple of times in the ballgame
we did. We saw somebody come up and take him
off his feet and he went down. If his feet
are under him and he's moving and you get a
(11:31):
hand or an arm on him, not enough. And as
we've seen two, three, four guys aren't enough. He's still
going to get positive. He's going to make some money
on something. It might not be a lot, but you're
not going to drop him for a loss. Very often.
He's you know, he is who he thought he was.
He's very very good. And that's again, that's what they're trying.
That's the kind of people that they're trying to recruit
(11:53):
in this league. And so you're at the point where
everybody has somebody who's a game breaker, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
On a different note, as we turn our attention to
high school football, we got the Dakota Bowl happening in
all the games coming up on Friday starting at nine am.
Area teams directly within our sixty minute radius here, not
too much, but we do have area teams like Laygden
(12:20):
battling for a state title. We do have Devil's Lake
with a nice surprising win as well, after they want
to against Central going away, and they parlayed that into
a huge win over Kindred. So Devil's Lake doing some
things right now, and so that's always a fun day
for the state, at least in my estimation.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
What do you think, Well, you're talking to the wrong
guy if you're looking for anything negative about that. That's
to me, that's the red letter day of the entire
calendar year that you take away the holidays. But the
sports season is a Dakota Bowl and you know there.
And I've done the same thing with Minnesota yea, back
(12:57):
in the days when they played them all on the
same day, I would be there beating the ticket takers
in the door, sit there and watch every game all day.
I'd still be there at Bend thirty that night. Yeah,
so here huge today. We're very fortunate in our state
to have indoor facilities. I would love to see the
(13:21):
High School Activities Association consider bringing it back to Grand
Forks every other year. I think there's a movement in
that direction, and at least from the folks here. So
but yeah, great, and congratulations of the teams. That's it's
quite a road to be able to get there.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
Yeah, no doubt. And obviously we see your traditional football powers.
Langdon has been that and and that goes back to
the Ramfos and prior to that. In recent years, you
see your new Rockford Cheyennes, certainly your Lemore's. I mean
it's a lot of the usual suspects. But when you
(13:59):
get Devil's like in there and you've got a new
school in mine not North getting a kick at the
can uh, I think that's that's fun too, to kind
of see some new blood get a shot.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Yeah, you have a Botano in there. Yeah, you're not
used to connecting Botano with state football championships. I mean,
they they've had their moments, but yeah, that's that's exciting.
And you know, how do you how do you get kids,
especially in our smaller towns, excited about going out for
various sports and in this case football, they go to
(14:33):
a state tournament too, you think all all the young
kids in those towns are going to show up sure
and want to do that themselves when it's their turn.
So it's great for a community, it's great for the schools.
And yeah, I and it's it's it's well covered in
our state. I mean, it's it's a major event, so
the media is there and it's it's a great it's
(14:54):
a great day.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
Well, coach, we appreciate you making the trip to Murray, Kentucky,
big one. The one thing you can say about Murray
Kentucky is at least you'll be home at a decent
hour because it's an eleven am our time game, so
it's a bright and early game on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
So normally when we're on the road seven in the
morning or six thirty in the morning, I'm the only
guy up in the hotel lobby. Right this week is
going to be the whole team getting ready for a
pregame meal and at eleven o'clock.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
That's exactly right, so you'll have no trouble making early
things for a breakfast and stuff and getting out the
door and getting ready for a game. But we wish
you all the safe, all the best in safe travels.
I know I'm gonna miss you guys the next couple
of weeks. Appreciate you guys doing such a great job
with things. And I will be listening in of course,
because I just love it even when I'm away. So
(15:47):
good luck this week, and I appreciate you joining us
here on a Tuesday to talk about appreciate a coach.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
Okay, we will carry on and try to fill the
gap with you gone.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
Paul, all right, sounds good, Thank you, having a great day. Yeah,
there it goes that. Coach Mike Berg, our color analyst
of North Dakota football on the Fighting Hawks Radio Network
