Speaker 1 (00:00):
Big thank you for Bill Chaves, director of Athletics, University
of North Dakota, for joining us for the first ninety
plus minutes of the program today deep diving into an
issue that you can get pretty deep into, and I
think we did probably for too many listeners. But college
athletics is a confusing place with what looms for many
(00:22):
and it's ever evolving. One guy who really keeps the
pulse of it through all of it is Tom Miller
the Grand Forks Herald to talk about that as the
sports editor of the Grand Forks Harald, Tom Miller and Tom,
you didn't have a chance to listen into our riveting,
riveting house settlement conversations, so maybe you lucked out on
(00:45):
that one. It might have been a little dry for
a lot of people out there.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
I'm fascinated by the house settlement and all that comes
with it, So I'm gonna have to listen back to
that one, because boy, that's really an in nta a
sports right now. How that gets shaken out is going
to affect everyone. And then, I mean the phrase gets overused,
but change the landscape of college sports in a lot
(01:11):
of ways in every sport. So fascinated by the by
the developments.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Yeah, well, and it's so interesting because what's happening I
think in certain instances and I talked about this with Bill,
and it's already kind of being weaponized by certain fan
bases or even institutions and administrations a little bit like hey,
we're opting in or whatever, and like that's such a
(01:38):
big deal. And I think the reality of it is,
and this is what we were trying to get to
the bottom of a little bit. Is like I don't
think anybody really knows. And that's why, you know, you
can even opt in even if if March first is
actually the date, you'll be able to opt in a
year from March first on the following March first as well,
and so opting in you know, you can say that,
(02:00):
but it doesn't necessarily make you like the all scene
all knowledgeable of how this is playing out. So again,
it's it's it's so interesting to see like how various
fan bases play it and and uh and different when
when nobody really knows. So that that's my that's where
I kind of chuckle about it.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Yeah, I completely agree with you right now. It's uh,
it's certainly almost like a status symbol one in reality,
you can you know, you can say, are our department's
gonna athletic revenue share? But if there's no revenues to share,
what are we talking about? You know? I think that's
(02:40):
what That's what? Uh. You know Larson and North Kota
State was trying to get across in his in the
piece in the Forum the other day about you know,
between costs attendance and Austin and and they're an I
l arm uh. They feel like they can be pretty
competitive regionally, and and I'm sure North Kota feels the
same way, you know, announcing and that you're that you're
(03:04):
opting in to me right now until until I hear
in angle that changes my mind. Right now, it just
feels like you're buying something that doesn't exist. Yeah, and
you're getting yourself into a situation that that you don't
know the full scope of. And so uh, I think
(03:24):
the Dakota School is being being patient with this thing.
Makes sense to me so far, I don't I don't
see a particular reason to jump head first, other than
to h if you think it sounds sexier on the
recruiting trail.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
Yeah, I suppose well, And I thought that you know
that Bill pointed this out too, is like, uh, you know,
like the Big Ten roughly, you know what with their
media deal, it's like seventy four million a school off
the off the Big Ten media deal that does not
include the college Football playoff piece. But those are numbers
(03:59):
that none of the rest of college sports is dealing with, right, So.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
If you're talking about the revenue that's getting shared being
TV deals, NCAA tournament redistributions, that's money that most of
the schools at North Kota's level are not privy to. Yeah,
so you're talking about different streams than yeah. And I
think for some there's been an appetite to bring NIL
(04:27):
in house. But I do think that North Kota has
a has a good relationship with its NIL group, and
you know, so maybe there's a little bit less of
an appetite to rush that in house. I don't know. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Well, like I said, I'll get all that uploaded here
a little bit later this morning. On complete under nonsense.
That's what you have to search on the iHeartRadio app
and go back and listen to those conversations. And I
know you've been following because I know colleague Jeff Colepak
in the forum part of the hair. Uh Hash has
written about it and interviewed various and I just got
(05:04):
done visiting with Bill and talking about the various pieces
and and as a Bill alluded to as well, I mean,
because all these schools have different sports offering offerings, even
within our own conference. And then you mentioned like in
the NCC there's uh like you have a Division III
school that only has two Division one sports, that you
have a FBS school, a power for school in Arizona State.
(05:26):
So there that that that's an interesting head scratcher, right,
How do you get your head around that one? So
there's all sorts.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Of things, massive ramifications in college hockey.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Oh man, Man's talk about crazy. So that's what I
think I wanted to put out there. If anything is
that it's not simple and uh and if anything in
your head does hurt a little bit. But I know
for a person like you and me, like we follow it.
We're trying to kind of get some concept of how
it all comes together. But uh and Bill did a
(05:57):
great job of laying it out for us this morning
over the first ninety minutes. Now, last night, are you
indie women coming off good performances on the road against
Deltakota State and NDSU. You were hoping to parlay that
into a bump here at home, allowed a little bit
of separation and just never were able to real Saint
Thomas fully back in boy. Last night a bit frustrating
(06:22):
for me with the U and D Ladies against the Tommy's.
Just thought maybe we let one get away from us.
I give the Tommy's credit, they were good, but I
just just thought we could get one there and it
just didn't happen last night for the U and D Ladies.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
Yeah, you know, because the formula that they've really improved,
that's allowed them to be so much more competitive, and
you know, keeping turnovers under you know, I don't know
what my magic number is, you know, something like eighteen,
you know, right, I feel like if they keep them
under eighteen, you know they should have a shot. And
you know, for a while there they were really struggling
(06:58):
from three and they found some things for our horn year.
You know, they've been shooting the three a little bit better.
So to do a couple of those things still and
and and lose any way at home, Yeah, that's uh,
that was a tough one to see I think for them.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
When you look at the U Indie men obviously playing
host to South Dakota State team that's red hot. Since
they got their win against North Dakota back in mid January,
they haven't lost and in fact, go to Fargo last
night get a win. So that that's who lies in
front of North Dakota. And Bill and I were talking
just a little bit. We touched on this and and
(07:38):
you know it, He's like, in today's college basketball environment
in the world that we live, and sometimes you might
as compared to last year, this team seems to be
searching still at this time, you know a little bit.
And and I think that's quite evident, you know, and
I maybe that happens in today's college basketball environment at
our level because you know, maybe you know, sometimes you
(08:03):
you lose players that you can say, well we can,
we can still you know, work our way back from
that despite you know, despite those players that you lose
out off your roster, and then when you realize it's
maybe not that simple, so to speak, you know, the
players that come out of your roster. So I thought
the men played hard on Saturday against NDSU. The effort
(08:25):
was there, the desire was there. They just weren't able
to get it across the board against a team that
you know, was better shooting from from outside than they were.
What's your take right now on you and d men's
basketball as they try to turn the corner tomorrow against
one of the league's best.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
Yeah, you know, at some point here, you know, it's
kind of they are who they are to some extent,
you know, you're you're running out of schemes and personnel
to swap around, and you just hope you have the
best version of yourself on any particular day. But you know,
it reminds me in the offseason that, you know, as
a team was coming together, I thought it was very
encouraging the way that some of the pieces were we're
(09:05):
gonna mix. But you know, from from such an outside perspective,
you really look at things so offensively, and and I
think we just we overlooked what was being swapped around defensively,
and that's obviously what is causing some issues for that team.
And so, you know, I thought that they would have
(09:25):
a have an okay time replacing some of the offensive
b j Olmott and to some extent tyree iinachop, But
they gosh, they they they sure missed some of that defensivelopment. Yeah,
and uh, you know that's going to be the whole
offseason storyline is is looking to looking to improve in
that area.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
Yeah, no doubt about it. That It's it's interesting sometimes
that gets lost in the challenges. But I but I
do think that that's been a little bit more coming
in to focus for me as as I move along.
Is that that's where some of the things have really
ben I know the coaches have talked about it, but
then as you look at it more and more through
that lens, I just I've been like, oh, yeah, I
(10:07):
can see that. So I think you're spot on there
other interesting notes, I guess basically really quick high school notes.
I didn't know much from it, but I do want
to touch on it. I saw it earlier this week
world boys basketball, one of the big storylines of the
way they've run with this season. Whilst did East Grand
(10:29):
Fork Senior High this week? Did you see that one?
Speaker 2 (10:33):
Yeah? And you know eastkot Fork is playing shorthanded right
now because they're usually a three headed attack with you
know McDonald lingering and rustling and rustling has been out
here for the last like three or four games. Yeah,
so I don't know the extent of what he's dealing with,
but like last night against Red River, I think McDonald
(10:54):
had thirty two and Lingering scored as well, but they're
just missing some of their firepower. So yeah, for pre
scart sports knockoff war Old in Town there was. That
was a really nice win.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Yeah. You know, the high school scene as we get
further along here with tournaments just about just around the
corner final regular season games, you know, there's enough to
keep our attention on the high school sports scene here
in the days and weeks to come here from both
sides of the river. That could keep our attention I think,
from whether it be hockey, basketball, wrestling, whatever it might be.
There's a lot to follow.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
Yeah, I know, Uh just got some of the dates
here for the tournaments coming up, and I mean Minnesota
Section girls hockey quarter finals are hosted, you know that
first week in February. Here next week, so shit starting.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
Here we go. It's all hands on deck now, that's
for sure. Tom. Appreciate you doing a short drop in
with me. What do you got this weekend? I know
you got probably Abby, you know, directed to her towards
certain things. What what are you gonna be involved in
this weekend? What are you trying to catch?
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Yeah, I's gonna have un D and South Coast State there,
I'll have East Grand Forks Boys hockey host Sat Cloud
Cathedral that's usually a pretty good class A showdown. Yeah,
at Civic Center tonight. I'm gonna check that out. And
and uh Fossman will be in in Saint Cloud. And
last night we had Max Marco at Red River East Side.
(12:26):
So we'll hit some games here this weekend, and uh,
like I said, it ramps up again next week.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
Yeah, goodness sakes, everybody's going somewhere, and it sounds like
everybody's got some good contests to follow. And of course
Brad we'll be following all his various insights from the
Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in regards to the running
up into the game and then after the game as
well with all his jottings. So, uh, it's a big
(12:53):
weekend for northa gooda hockey against Saint Cloud State starting
tonight down in Saint Cloud. We will follow it all
in our digital editions of the Grand Forks Herald. And
we've been talking to the sports edator Tom Miller. Tom,
you have a great, safe weekend ahead. We look forward
to all your coverage and your team's coverage, and we'll
be following along and we look forward to our visit,
maybe this weekend or again next week.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Thanks Tom, sounds good. Good a chat with you, Paul,
Take care.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
All right, There goes Tom Miller of the Grand Forks Herald.
We appreciate him dropping in
