Speaker 1 (00:00):
Friday morning, let's send link up with the sports editor
at the grad Forks Herald, Tom Miller, who's just been
not much to do with the last few days or
this week, has her Tom?
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Yeah, you know, coffee's gonna feel good here in about
ten minutes, that'll be good.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Right.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Well, we did throw a wrench in with you, Tom,
for your team on on Tuesday, we put in a
little basketball media day to kick off the season. So
you mean, I've got so much audio right now that
I still am sifting through it basically, but I've got
so many other things I am having a hard time
getting to it right now. So it's it's that time
of year, right. We just keep adding to the pile
(00:41):
and we try to to dive into what we can.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Yeah, and then Preps threw me a loop playing everything
on Wednesday this week. Yeah, even my wife. Even my
wife was like, I don't think they played Wednesdays. I
was like, well, this week, they do?
Speaker 1 (00:57):
They do?
Speaker 3 (00:58):
They Should we start with the tim Should we start
with you and d football?
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Well, let's start with the Cushman Classic. And you've documented
some of the significance of this game, but it's a
big one, isn't it, Tom, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
And I think it should be a good game. You know,
I have a hard time kind of deciphering who I
think is gonna win. That matchup means quite a bit,
especially the red River But yeah, I guess it's central too.
They you know, like we wrote about in today's paper,
two of their star players, you know, sat out a
year ago and are back in Brooklyn Bruce and Eli Thompson,
(01:32):
and so, you know, I'm sure they didn't enjoy losing
whatever it was, thirty seven donuts. So but for red River,
it it could mean making the playoffs or not making
the playoffs. So you know, I expect it to be
a really good game. I think these two teams are
fairly comparable, and you know it's going to go a
long ways into the making of the bracket. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
No, it's been a while since there was significance to
this game, hasn't it.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
Yeah, that's that's a good question, as it really meant
postseason on the line here probably the last few years
a little bit more just in that new division. But
that being said, I feel like there's just been a
lot of years in the last twenty years where you know,
it's it's fairly easy to see who's who's the favorite,
(02:23):
but I don't I don't know, you know, Vegas didn't
put out a line yet on that one, but I'd
be curious to know what it was. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Well, and again, as you mentioned, when there's something about
perhaps missing a playoff opportunity, Yeah, that that hasn't come
around too often when the two teams have met, and
you know, depending on everybody's I guess feeling of this
new division that was created and that both the Grand
Ford schools were gonna participate in it, I guess that's
(02:54):
maybe the one good thing that comes out of it.
Just adds another piece and a little bit more fuel
to the fire. But that you know, nobody really knew
about what to think about this new created division, and
in the end, it's probably worked out to create a
little bit added bonus of drama when it comes to
Central on Red River clashing in football.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, I think I think it's been great for Grand Forks.
I think there's gonna probably be a point where some
of the schools in that division. You know, if you've
got a Buffalo Wild Wings in town, you don't belong
in the uh the Double A division, you know. I
think there's some some feelings like that, and so you know,
there might be a time where Grand Forks is gonna
(03:33):
have to you know, load up and take a shot
at the highest division. But I think it's been really
good for Grand Forks having having those two teams relevant.
It's sure been nice on my end to uh to
cover playoff pictures.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Well, it's definitely interesting to me where you know, if
they truly thought that they were going to dominate this
Double A division or or the or the A division
or whatever it is, Yeah, double the you know, it
hasn't happened, and if they did, they'd probably be moved up.
And so we'll we'll see if that ever comes to pass.
(04:09):
But right now they seem to be in a competitive
place and it makes it fun for the fans, and
we'll see what they can do with it. Here on
their night, which is where the spotlight shines at Cushman
Field in Grand Forks at seven to night, red River
Central for all the tea in China, that's a lot
of tea. Anyway, let's talk about you indie football. They've
you know, went to Southern Illinois, changed the game, time,
(04:33):
came out of the gates, got after the Slukies right
away and did it on the ground. I mean they
just ran at will, offensive line, running backs, we're doing
their thing. Key takeaways in that game as well, and
I mean it was the formula of formulas. Was that
the best North Dakota performance of the season so far?
Speaker 1 (04:51):
Tom?
Speaker 2 (04:53):
I mean I think, so, yeah, you're fairly dominant at
Northern Iowa, then that looks pretty good. But at the
same time time, Northern Iowa hasn't put together a very
good year. So the fact that the fact that U
and D went on the road and took care of
a top twenty five team in the country the way
they did in such dominant fashion, this really bodes well
(05:15):
for this program, the team. Coach Schmidt, Boy, you know,
it's made me kind of readjust my expectations, you know,
going into that game. You know, I probably would have predicted,
you know, does you and D win that game thirty
one twenty four or you know, to be up twenty
(05:36):
eight donut at halftime was just kind of unimaginable, you
know previously, So certainly have a new level of expectations
for that program and kind of feels like they're they're
only up from here, right.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Now and yet today coming up tomorrow at the Alaia
Centers a program that has been a real thorign for
North to go to either deal with and find a
two years ago in twenty twenty three in overtime victory
against the Sycamores. Last year, we know that it was
a game that went sideways on North Dakota just in
bad ways. I mean, it was not terrordise for North
(06:13):
Dakota in any way whatsoever at Memorial Field there in
Terre Hate. So I guess the question is Indiana State
has been a thorn? Can they not prick themselves this
time on a Saturday.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Yeah, that's a good question. I think I've been waiting
for you, indeed to play a little up and down
and and really it's been very consistent across it each week.
And if you know, unless we see that that egg
get laid this week, I don't expect you and need
(06:49):
to have a problem. I think what was the line?
Un D's like a thirty point favorite, and you know,
just uh, this team has kind of put to rest
all the bad vibes, the road bad vibes, you know, Carbondale,
Cedar Falls, places that haven't been successful even Missoula hasn't
been a place that's been great to North Kota or
(07:10):
a power a Power Conference opponent like Kansas State. So
all the things that I previously kind of came to
learn about the program, this team's kind of, you know,
reverse course and it kind of made its own mark.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
I guess, go, tim, are I suppose you want to
ask a question third? Yeah, yeah, you don't see that
very often. Oh, you know, we go back to the
Gavin ze Barth. I was actually head that on my
iPad when I was at the Betty, and you know,
it just was kind of a weird thing because it
didn't look like he was tackled in a bad way
(07:47):
or he just kind of went down like a normal
person would, but he just maybe didn't have a chance
to brace himself. Coach Burg I thought summed it up
best with us on Tuesday morning. He said, you know,
he's like, actually, I feel way worse for the you know,
the young man, because I mean he's put in a
lot of time and effort and now he's having to
deal with the late season injury. But I don't He's like,
I feel confident that North Kota can handle this, and
(08:09):
you know what, I kind of do too, because I
actually think Colton Brunell. Yeah, he may not have breakaway
speed or whatever, but I just have a feeling like
he can be in effective additional running back that they
can turn to if they if they go to him
a little bit, I'm not necessarily, you know, being like,
oh no, this guy is falling. I think there's other
guys to turn to here. And that's just my feeling
(08:31):
on that. What do you think?
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Yeah, I'm kind of mixed. I think you and Dy
has struggled in short yardage in red zone to begin with.
I don't know if this makes it harder or if
it just gives somebody else a chance to prove that
they can handle that role, you know, if it's thirta
and one, if it's thirtain one on the eighth, I
kind of liked Kevin Ziebart coming in and handling that role.
(08:54):
Maybe that's not exactly Sawyer. Now Sawyer just scores from
the twenty lately, so asn't it hasn't exactly mattered. But
I think that they're going to be really searching for
who's that thick body back. I'm not sure that's that's
probably not Colton Brunella either, You're right. I think he
has done some things that have kind of changed my
(09:17):
opinion on on on where he stacks up and where
his future could be with you. Indeed, I'll be watching
Charles Charles Langhama from Maple Grove. They want to they
want to maintain his red shirt. So I don't know
if he plays Saturday or not. But he's got that
thick frame that I think might make a lot of
(09:39):
sense in terms of a z Barth replacement. And I
just think his his ceiling is sky high. It just
it might not be that impressive in twenty twenty five,
or it might be, but I think come twenty twenty
six and twenty twenty seven, Uh, he could be a
major part of that offense.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
How much has he played so far?
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Uh, that's a good question. You know. He his biggest
role was was when Gavin went down and he ran
for I don't know, like forty one yards against Southern Illinois,
had a twenty six yard run in that mix. I
don't know if he got any garbage time previously. You know,
he's been dressed for a few home games. My attention
wanes against Portland State and Velpo, so I'm not. I'm
(10:22):
not sure if he got in in some junk time
for you and D's sake, you know you gotta hold
because right now. The big thing is that rule change
a few years ago is that once the playoffs start,
those games don't tick off your four game list to
maintain your red shirt. So if you could, if you
(10:42):
could hold him out for a game or two here,
use him in the big ones, and then you can
let him, let him, let him buck in the playoffs
if at that point maybe Gavin's back, but it's not
an issue once you reach the postseason. So that's kind
of the game. I think they're gon have to play
here if they if they want to maintain that red shirt.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
Yeah, I'm not I think it would to my knowledge.
And again, of course I missed the Southern Illinois game,
but I only remember that being the only game he's
gotten in so far. But I could be wrong, but
I'd only have it at one. But but maybe maybe
they're more. And then of course, yeah, you're playing the
uh you know, the four game game to the end
(11:23):
of the regular season where everything resets when you get
to the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Yeah, I suppose there would be some I guess, uh,
you know, basically decisions by the coaches about where he
would find those those additional three games here in a
run in that includes this one on Saturday tomorrow against
Indiana State, South Kota NDSU, Murray State, and South and
South Dakota State. So three out of the five in
(11:47):
order to keep the red shirt. But in today's day
and age, I'm not sure red shirts matter anymore. Tom,
I gotta be perfectly honest with you. I'm kind of
kind of like feeling like, why are we even worried
about it?
Speaker 1 (11:57):
Basically challenge it?
Speaker 3 (11:59):
Yeah, just I'm just like, I don't I don't know
necessarily what's the big deal. But in today's day and age,
But uh, okay, you know, so anyway, let's talk a
little bit about where you send Brad Schlasman to Upstate
New York. He's probably needs a passport. He's as close
to the Canadian border as we are, just in case.
But yeah, so it's it's a big hockey weekend that
(12:20):
Brad will be writing about in non conference play yet again.
And so what are the big takeaways that Brad was
giving you before he left?
Speaker 2 (12:29):
Yeah, you know, I I didn't get a chance to
break down the Uniti hockey season too much with him,
So I'll have to catch up with him when he
when he comes back from New York. But I imagine you know,
you're hockey is in football. You're not gonna go unbeaten,
So I you know, I don't know how much how
(12:52):
much stock you put in one game. You know, we
we haven't seen enough games here to start coming away
with themes I feel like are more important than than
the individual games when it comes to the sport of hockey.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
Kay, what are you hearing from you and Dye basketball?
From the takeaways from media day both the men and
the women in regards to their seasons. Coach Hutter and
coach Sather were both on hand to speak about their teams.
Certain select student athletes were on hand to speak about
their teams. What are you hearing out of that media
day as they turn their attention to a regular season
that is set to start just around the corner.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
Yeah, I mean, I guess I'd like to see I'd
like to see the full arsenal for the men's team. Yeah,
you know, gets James Town holding Now three guys that
might be in your top eight doesn't give you a
perfect picture of what you might see. And Paul Saylor,
you know, I thought it was interesting and what he
flat out said at media day is like the team
you see in November will be very different than the
(13:49):
team you see in December will be very different than
you see in January kind of thing. So I think
they're gonna have They're gonna take some time to figure
out who's in that road to especially as you know,
maybe you balance some injuries and figure out that piece
of it. So I'm just, you know, very curious to
see how that plays out, because you know, we were
(14:10):
in Carbondale, so I didn't get to see that U
and d Jamestown matchup, and I don't think I saw
stats from it. So I, you know, very curious to
see how the Gophers game plays out, and maybe I can,
maybe I can tune into the the picture that you
paint on the radio on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Well, I appreciate that. I'll be on my toes then
when bringing you the action on the women's side, it's
much the same coach Hutter trying to He's talking less
accent x'es and o's and talking more about building a
family like culture that translates and eventually makes its appearance
on the court. And I think there's something to be
said about that, because in today's day and age, with
(14:49):
the interchangeability of your to your rosters, especially in basketball
and including on the women's side, I can see why
that would be his focus as far as instilling connected
team atmosphere. If you start there, then then you can
start worrying about some x's and o's. And that seems
to be my big takeaway from his statements on on Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Yeah, I thought his his remarks were interesting. I don't
think he singled out a single player in his entire remarks.
You know, at one point I kind of thought, uh,
you know, stop trying to motivate me and give me
some information. But I I I realized that, you know,
you you got an opportunity in front of a camera,
(15:30):
and you know you want to say your piece about
what your program's all about. So I fully understand why
he went the direction he did. But you know, there's
a point where it's like, I want to hear about
who the heck's gonna play for you and who's gonna
score some points. But we're gonna have to figure that
out on our own. Here as the Jesus starts playing
out here, because that's you're right, there's a lot of
(15:52):
a lot of new faces and uh, you know that
could be good and bad. We'll see, all right.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
Well, Tom, thanks for dropping in. Lots to follow here

Speaker 3 (16:23):
Take care all right, There goes Tom Miller, Sports editor
of the Grand Forks Herald,
