Speaker 1 (00:00):
Seven thirty eight, Friday morning, let's link up with the
sports editor of the Grand Forks Herald, mister Tom Miller. Morning, Tom,
Good morning, guys.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
It's a it's a busy week in your world.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
You know, for whatever reason, I think I know why
it rams up with the various stories that are written
in regards to what's gonna happen tomorrow at two thirty.
Let's just dive right into the game itself.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
You know.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
My takeaways are cam Miller is playing the best football
he's ever played at that position for them, So they
obviously have a guy that's been through it and is
playing at a high, high level. They're running games starting
to complement him nicely. Ken North Goo's defense kind of
wall up like they did in the second half of
the Montana game. Is that a possibility to help North

(00:50):
Dakota's offense out tomorrow? What do you think, Tom?

Speaker 3 (00:54):
Yeah, I think it starts with flowing cam Miller. You know,
he he's hitting. It's such a high percentage, you know
that you're probably gonna give up a little bit in
the passing game. But when they were in Fargo the
last few times, I felt like, gosh, they just couldn't
stop the quarterback run game, and they've they've got to

(01:17):
be able to stop that part of his game. You know,
I think Jake Landry has done a nice job making
North Dakota State a little bit more balanced and not
so much you know, Tyler roll three full backs and
six tight ends and we're gonna smash it right ahead.

(01:37):
And so I think there's kind of a little bit
of a new challenge with North Dakota State in that regard.
And you know, I just think you and d needs
to needs to be a different place where they don't
go into Fargo with deer in the headlights. Look, I
think some of it is is a mental hurdle right
now that they've got to get beyond and uh put

(02:00):
something together. On the road. It would certainly be the biggest,
uh you know, if they were able to pull out
a win, it'd be the certainly the biggest road performance
in you know, Bubba Schweier's tenure. But you know, it's
it's been a while since they've really uh secured a
nice home win or a road win.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
I would say that the key would be don't let
them have the ball. North Kota control things offensively.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Well that's that's interesting that North Dakota North Kota State.
I think they're both like something like top five in
the country in time of possession. It's kind of a
something has to give a situation there, and I think, uh,
you know, the way North Kota has been able just
from the get go this year to put together a
twenty plus play drive at Iowa State just built a

(02:49):
ton of confidence for that offense that they could move
the chains, and they continued that against Montana and the
last few weeks it's just been weird where you know
they've been. They've become more explosive. Can that continue or
how much is that a product of three subpar opponents

(03:14):
in the Alair Center certainly going to be a different
game makeup this week.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah, I was going to say that. I think you
bring up the point of moving the ball methodically downfield.
It's been demonstrated several times by both teams. The other
little piece here last year after the game in Grand Forks,
NDSU's defense hit a different level. The rest of the season.
They were far tougher as the season wore on. Did

(03:40):
they hit that light switch early this year because it
sure seemed that way against Illinois State defensively, they seem
to have taken a step forward coming into this one
with their performance last weekend.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
Yeah, that you know, one one big picture thing left
to kind of figure out here is what you know?
Is that more damning of Illinois State and in its offense,
or or has North Dakota State righted the ship defensively
because they were bleeding rushing yards heading into that game
and then they gave up like what eight in normal,

(04:15):
So I don't know what to take away from that.
Has they figured it out defensively or was that a
perfect matchup for North Dakota State, because Illinois State can
be a little bland and be a little straightforward, and
that perhaps really plays into the strengths of North Dakota State.
North Kota has to hope that they can get guys
like Isaiah Smith and Sawyer style loose in the in

(04:37):
the in the second level, because I think that's where
that's where the Bison has struggled to tackle, especially with
was new Ski out as much as he's been out
the last couple of years. I think that's where North
Kota has to as to be able to try to
run the football. I'd be surprised if the Bison didn't
commit more to the box. That was something that I

(04:59):
was prize they didn't do in Grand Forks. You know,
we saw Gavin z Bars, you know, picking up first
downs on third and nine rushes last year in Grand
Forks against the Bison, and that's just felt kind of
unheard of against anybody, let alone a team that had
become an FCS dynasty. So you know, I would be

(05:21):
surprised if if the Bison didn't give a completely different
look defensively than they did a year ago.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Right, Yeah, I I it will be very interesting to
kind of see how that unfolds, Like you mentioned, from
one game to the next, there's lots of different ways
to look at it. Finally, just really quick, you know,
there have been big special team moments in this game
over the years. Last year, I think North Plunt Block

(05:48):
and NDSUS had their moments in the special teams games
as well. In their specialists or tip in recent years
have been really good themselves. So if you get late
in the game where it's gonna be decided by a
special teams, they probably have a slight edge in their building.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
Maybe. Yeah, you know, I think both you Indi and
NDESU have have strong special teams. It feels it does
feel like Sean Costitch has had an ability to dial
it up to call the right the right block at
the right time, or or get a bigger turn. You know,
last year having Scopna and Red Wilson both returnkicks for touchdowns.

(06:28):
I think that was obviously uh some personnel and talent,
but it's also some x's and o's that that North
Dakota did a solid job on. So special teams was
a major factor in Grand Forks against the Bison last year.
And and you're probably gonna want to uh to be

(06:49):
very careful about how you punt to North Dkota state
because that returner has been, uh been pretty electric. So
I imagine North North Dakota is gonna do some things
to uh to not let him beat you and make
cam Miller have to have to chuck it down the
field a little bit.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
Now here's one thing that I tried. I talked to
Tim a little bit this morning. I thought it was
an interesting article. The Brad Shlassman had written any comments too,
and he received comments from both respective athletics directors in
regards to potentially a trophy. I think athletic director Bill
Chaves at the University of North Dakota was like, hey,
you know, we don't have anything set in stone, but

(07:26):
we're open to, you know, see what occurs and maybe
open that door and have discussions or whatever. Matt Larson's response,
far more guarded, almost is almost just does not want
to even dare say the word rivalry here in fact
continues to use the company line with South Dakota State

(07:46):
and basically said, well, I think our young, younger students
and stuff would look at it that way. And then
you look across campus at sorority or fraternity role with
the anti un D signs or whatever out there. But
interesting take in that article is kind of what I
was saying. One was seemed to be squirming, the other
one was more just like, man, we'll see kind of
where it takes us. Basically, well, were your what were

(08:09):
your takeaways there?

Speaker 3 (08:11):
It was certainly interesting. And then Jeff Colepak at the
Forum asked Polsek, you know if he thinks there should
be a trophy, and and he said, yeah, it's kind
of funny that, you know, who's so whose narrative is it?
You know, is Matt Larson holding the cards there and

(08:33):
that's his personal opinion, or does he feel like he's
taking some marching orders from their donors. You know, there's
been a change at president, so I don't know. Uh,
I don't know exactly where that comes from. When I
thought Brad Schlasan did a great job pointing out in
strictly data you know, you go to stub hub. You

(08:54):
go stub hub right now, and the you in the
NDESU game is you know, tickets are going for than
the South Kota State game. So I don't know. You
you tell me it was the who's the rival? And
that's that's fine to think that the South Kota State
Northcota State matchups has been a better game, you know,
in recent history here, and that's fine. But I think

(09:18):
it's just, uh, I think it's a little silly. How
how far out of their way some administrators at North
Kota State will go to make sure that North Dakota
does not get their attention and effort.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
Yeah, I I it is really well said, because I
understand there was significant hurt when the division one moved
by them and North Kcota wouldn't play him in sports
and they were, you know, trying to schedule. And I
understand that was a bitter moment and they've held on
to that for a long time. I could understand where
that administration from that time held on to bitterness even

(09:58):
and we're going to try to stick it back in
North Dakota's face in one way, shape or form. But
these are different people now, there's all sorts of different
people involved the fact that there's twenty years what are
we doing basically, and nobody says you have to come
out and say like, well, I mean, you know, we'll, yeah,
we're gonna talk about it tomorrow or anything. But it

(10:18):
just seems so like just squirming in a chair trying
to come up with the phraseology to somehow diminish this
or to take the sting out of it or even
contemplate the question.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
So, yeah, fascinating for me. I think nor North Dakota
State has carved out a niche of national recognition and
the idea that North Dakota would share any of that
spotlight in any sort of way is absolutely you know,
against their wishes. Yeah, they will stiff arm North Dakota

(10:53):
at a return, and they certainly will not aid in
that in allowing North Dakota any of that spotlight. Yeah,
and I just think at every turn that they're they're
going out of their way to to diminish any anything

(11:13):
that North Dakota could try to accomplish or or or
join in that spotlight. I don't know, it's uh, it's bizarre.
I thought it was great that that Polsik was more
blunt and open to it than not so guard. At
least they're admitting the word rivalry, like I spent ten
years there, you know, being the gatekeeper of the word rivalry.

(11:34):
Is this a rivalry? Like I'm stick of asking that question,
You're answering that question, you know. And so I I
think that's at least been admitted. North Dakota finally won
a game, you know. Now, I think there's a little
bit more admittance that there's a rivalry there.

Speaker 2 (11:49):
Well as much tiptoeing as there was. It must be exhausting,
That's all I'm saying in regards to what I read there.
So anyway, there's my two cents. Tim, I'll let you
kind of take the last one in here with Tom
Surrea hogged it, but I had to get down that road.
Go ahead, Tim, No that's okay.

Speaker 1 (12:04):
What I wonder Tom, and you're you're around the football
team a lot for the players. Is that a rivalry?

Speaker 3 (12:15):
Yeah? You know, I mean I think there's there's some
validity to that question, especially because of the time that
that the rivalry took off. You know, like guys like
Joel schwenz Fire, who's you know, deep in the und
program his entire career. You know, he never got a
chance to Bison Jake Landry over at North Kota State

(12:35):
when he was a UNI quarterback, he didn't play the Bison.
So it did take some time off, and so I
think that impacted how guys view the rivalry to some extent,
you know, even the even the local and area guys.
But to with that said, you know, talking to guys
about the mood after the Murray State game and they

(12:59):
talk about the twenty for our rule, about celebrating victories
or pouting about losses and and then getting back to
work on Sunday, you know, there certainly wasn't a twenty
four hour feel to the Murray State win. I think
that there was a just a it could have even
been unspoken that Murray State games over and now it's

(13:22):
attention to Darakota State. So I think there is there's
an understanding that this game is different, does it? Did
guys grow up with the with the fire and ice
and Dale Lennon owning the farm, their their experience is
different than mine. But you know, I do think, I
do think that that there's a full understanding that this

(13:42):
week is different than every other week.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:44):
Interesting take there, And don't forget you'll have coverage of
the Cushman Classic in your pages as well. You've already
got a nice write up going into it, and you'll
have a full on coverage of it again tomorrow. And
basically simply said, I think red River, uh definitely the
favorite going in, but it's a rivalry that is a

(14:05):
rivalry game, and who knows what will happen, right.

Speaker 3 (14:09):
Yeah, red River was the favorite going in last year,
and uh they got upset Central. Uh. Central doesn't have
as much uh high end talent as it did a
year ago. But uh, you know, I uh I respect
Jake Shower coach at Central and and uh the program
he's trying to build, and I think he he'll have

(14:29):
his guys ready uh as much as he.

Speaker 2 (14:30):
Can perfect tom Big day, we'll see it tomorrow and
we'll we'll be a part of the game. Whether it's
called a rivalry by some or not, we'll we'll be
in attendance and covering it, right, Tom.

Speaker 3 (14:44):
That's right, that's right. We'll uh, we'll be there and
we'll we'll look forward to Sunday when, uh, when when
all the hoopla is over.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
Hey, and you know, maybe we should brainstorm to think
of a trophy.

Speaker 3 (14:59):
Well yeah, yeah, absolutely, and then the North Dakota state
thing where they want to do like a points system
for the overall program. No, yeah, no, I want a trophy.
I want it to be in an end zone, and
I want the winner of the game to run over
and grab it.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
Yeah, that's a good point. Hey, Tom, thanks for this.
Have a great weekend.

Speaker 3 (15:22):
Okay, all right, sounds good. We'll talk to you guys
again later.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
All right. Tom Miller, sports editor of The Grand Fork
Chield appreciate his time this morning.
