Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's another big sports weekend for those that follow you
indie hockey, follow you indie football. There's high school sports
that are continuing to kind of sift out now finally
getting into some playoff football if you're of the nine
man variety, as they're beginning the nine man playoffs in
North Dakota. But let's start with you indie football. Tom
here on this Friday morning. It's Ben Now. Essentially it

(00:25):
will be two full weeks since North Dakota has gone
with faced Anyone, of course, after a disappointing loss and Fargo,
and it's a sequence of a little different. The opponent
remains the same after NDSU like it was a year ago,
it's a different circumstance. Last year North Kota was going
into that game and laid a clunker in Cedar Falls

(00:46):
against Northern Iowa. This year they got beat handily by
NDSU and now Kenaford to clunker and this time they'll
meet Northern Iowa in the Alris Center. So while there
are some things feeling the same, there are some things
that are far different, right, Tom.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Yeah, that was really exactly how I felt about it. Is.
You know, there's a pivotal point, uh, with a Northern
Iowa matchup following North Kota State matchup, but definitely a
different vibe, a different venue, you know, teams at different
different places in their in their journey a little bit,
but uh, ultimately extremely important for North Kota to uh

(01:28):
win at home here and and win before you It
sure looks like the South Dakota South Dakota State portion
of your schedule is going to be uh extremely challenging.
So you know, if you're North Kota, you're thinking better
take advantage of the fact that Northern Iowa hasn't found
their group quite yet.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Yeah, and I guess, to be honest with you, here's
what I said in my first hour this morning. I said,
Northern Iowa, you know you there are going to be
people that haven't been following. I think that we'll say, well,
look at their record, look at their record, and I'll
be like, they are a wounded animal. This is their hill,
this is this is this is their mountain right now.

(02:06):
They know that if they lose this game, essentially the
season most likely is over. This is it for them,
and so I They're going to be a cornered wounded
animal tomorrow because I guarantee you their coaching staff said,
you know what, we've been in this situation before. If
we get tomorrow, we still have a chance in this
thing of getting to the postseason. And I think that

(02:29):
that's a concern for me because a desperate team is
is one that is really difficult to predict.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah, I just think there's probably some confidence from that
group coming off of what they did in North Dakota
a year ago. Right. I do think that, you know,
what a challenging ask from the schedule makers at Northern
Iowa to say, gosh, here's two Pioneer League teams to

(02:57):
start your schedules. Then we're gonna we're gonna give you
a two FBS games, oh and surprise one of them
is Hawaii. And then we're gonna start you on Missouri
Valley Play. We're gonna go, you know, South Dakota, South
Dakota State, North Dakota, Missouri State, North Dakota State. Like,
what an epic way for your schedule makers to take

(03:19):
as little care of you as possible. Busting from Vermillion
deceedar falls, turning back around this weekend and coming back
to North Dakota, licking your wounds. Absolutely, a team that's
dangerous and maybe has some confidence from last year. I
think that's a massive ask from a program to make

(03:39):
them turn back around and come to Grand Forks this weekend.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
Do you know what I think then is so you
can correct me if I'm wrong when it comes to
you Indie football's formula tomorrow, I think it's even more
imperative to have a huge, great start if you're North
Dakota tomorrow because if you get out on Northern Iowa
through all of this, I just feel like, unlike some
of these other teams that are playing with hope and

(04:04):
stuff even in September, like hey, let's still see what
we can do. Boy, I think if you get out
on him hard early, they might just be like, well
this is ridiculous. That might be the way I would
be after that, you know.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Yeah. And I think they have been getting worn down
in games a little bit, you know, like they've had
decent starts. If you look last week in the Dakota Dome,
even they were up seven zip, they were up ten
to seven. So you know, they would love nothing more
than to be handed a nice little you know, one touchdown,
two touchdown lead right and then and then go behind

(04:41):
three hundred and thirty pound offensive lineman with your six four,
two hundred and thirty pound tailback. I did find it
very interesting. I listened to Mark Farley's press conference. Yeah,
and he really had a he had a strange rabbit hole.
He went down about deciding whether it's worth guys finishing
out this ye that are trying to play through injuries,

(05:01):
or if they're at a point here pre mid season
to shut guys down, and so be very curious pregame
you in the Northern Iowa. I'll be very active trying
to figure out if any surprises are on the dress
no dress list.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Interesting point there. The other interesting thing big picture here,
you know, one of the interesting things because Northern Iowa
fifteen twenty years ago was a regular power in the
FCS big picture scene. They were a regular power. It's
got to be very interesting for those in Cedar falls

(05:38):
to Yeah, we may be able to touch the FCS playoffs,
you know, if things fall our way, but that's not
what it was. Fifteen twenty years ago. They were the
big cat. They were the big team on the pile basically,
and they're right now just trying to claw and scrape
and try to stay in the conversation that's that's not

(06:00):
that's then that's kind of what it's been the last
ten years for them. It's got to be awkward for
their fan base, their leadership, and to kind of have
this different world that they're living in, this new Missouri
valley basically that they're living in for for that fan
base and for that leadership and for that program.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
Yeah, you know, that's a very good point, and it'd
be fascinating to deep dive on that from from where
I stand, which is pretty far away from cer Falls,
but from where I stand, Uh, there's clearly a lack
of investments. You know, when we talk about North Dakota
and we talk about them having a twenty million dollar
indoor practice facility with a twenty million dollar edition being

(06:39):
packed on with Memorial Village one in the distance and
Memorial Village too being created, right, Yeah, North Dakota is
well taken care of administratively. We just talked about Northern
Iowa going on two FBS trips, and the only time
you go on two FBS trips is you you're Idaho State.
You're you're a team that you're desperately trying administratively to

(07:02):
fund things generate, generate, generate enough money to cover your
butt elsewhere. And so, uh, there's a first year athletic
director in Northern Iowa, and I think she's got a
lot of work to do, because I believe it's a
she has a lot of work to do because when
when you and I walked into the Unidome last year,
I felt like I was time traveling. That place is

(07:25):
from a different from a different generation almost now I felt. So,
you know, certainly, Uh, Northern Iowa has some issues, and
I think it starts in funding.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
Yeah, I well, and like I say, I mean that
there isn't a lot of difference between Holt Wholt Arena
and the Unidome, although Halt Arena supposedly is getting a renovation,
so kudos to them, I guess. But but yeah, it's
very similar. It's a different era. We went back in time,
and they are a program that was one of the
big big alphas for for a fair stretch there and

(07:59):
now are a the Claw and Scratch mode and it's
it's got to be different for their supporters, for their administration,
for their program, and uh, it's it's just a different
world that they're kind of living in. And you've added
in the South Dakota and North Dakota's in the valley now,
and it's just it's it's a different picture. And I'm
sure it's just like what has happened here, but that's

(08:21):
the world that they live in. And and for North Dakota,
they just got to take care of business tomorrow. I
just want to see us win at the point of attack.
I say us. I mean, you know, I live, you know,
on the und side of things, but I you know,
we we just didn't win too many of those battles
for the first time in that last meeting with NDSU,
and and that was unusual for this this team this
year up front defensively and offensively. And if they they

(08:45):
do win there, I think they'll they'll have a great
chance against Northern Iowa.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Yeah, and d has to be better than they were
in Fargo at the line of scrimmage, and it's not
going to be easy. I think there's a maybe a
misperception here that this is gonna be a slam duncan.
I think it's gonna be h. I think it's gonna
be an absolute dogfight on Saturday. That's that's how I
see it.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
Yeah, I certainly it could play out that way. And
I think, you know, like I just you've got a
team that's gonna be in a desperation mode realizing that
it doesn't get any easier for them. North Gooda knows
it doesn't get any easier for them. So it's a
it's a big one, and I think it should make
for a great atmosphere at the Elirius. I hope it's
a great atmosphere at the elis anyway, that's my fingers

(09:30):
crossed on that, turning our attention high school football playoffs.
Was a playoff like game at Cushman Field last night
between red River and West Fargo Horris. It played out
that way all the way to the bitter end.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
Your thoughts on that, I mean, it was ugly. I
only watched via the stream. We had a reporter. We
had a reporter there, of course, but boy, you know,
I felt bad for Horace, you know, starting quarterback, the
Stefano Witch kid, he got he got dinged up, didn't

(10:02):
played in the second half, and they were obviously calling
plays offensively that you know, they probably weren't comfortable with
their normal packages. And red River just for the second
game in a Row. I thought just wasn't very sharp turnovers,
silly penalties on defense. I just thought red River has

(10:24):
a high ceiling, and I don't think the last two
weeks we've seen it. And I guess maybe that tells
you a bit about the strength of the program right
now that they're still undefeated in unanimous number one in
the state.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
Yeah, it's it's one of those things where it red River,
you know, at its best, it's highest level. I think
is clear and away the best team, but certainly can
be got as indicated from last night or even at
Wampton that if if they're not at their level, they
just like anybody, can be beaten. I just was kind

(10:59):
of looking at the setup of the playoffs as we
start to see nine man Mayport they're in action and
Cavaliers in action. So we see the nine man playoffs
ramping up. We're starting to see the brackets come out.
I think you listened to them in today's paper. In
additions for Minnesota Section eight A eight Double A playoffs,
the nine man Section six and eight playoffs are online now.

(11:23):
I see east Grenfork's senior high great great effort against
a very good program in Detroit Lakes to close out
its regular season, falling by a single point there at
fourteen thirteen. But with that loss, they are on the
road in a four versus five matchup starting on Tuesday
against the Prowlers who beat them.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
Yeah decent, you know, I would think a nice little
opportunity to see if you can reverse that result. I mean,
that's that's kind of the one that really stands out
on the schedule, like, whoa, what happened? What happened there?
So getting out of the opportunity, but you got to
do it on the road. So Tuesday really really heats up.
Saturday we got some got some nine man stuff in

(12:04):
the area. Abby Sharpe had a great story in tomorrow's
paper that's online Rate just now about four Winds High
School hosting the playoff game for the first time ever
the year after they lose the probably their first Division
one talent football wise in in Dang Dang Yeah put
together a five and two year Dang Dang's brother starting

(12:25):
to put together a nice little athletic career in high
school for himself and having a big year. So uh,
you know, happy for Travis Mertens guy who's been really
good to me in the in the media world a
little bit, and obviously you know him a little bit.
On the Union basketball day. I think he does a
fantastic job there, four wins.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
Do you want to know my last Murdy story? Yeah.
I go over to Devil's Lake this summer just to
drop off some swag to a radio affiliate over there
and visit with Biggs over there. And before I walk
in the building, up comes this guy in a cut
off T shirt. The sleeves are cut off, you know,

(13:08):
on a gator and I just hats pulled down or whatever.
And I didn't recognize him at first, and he's a
and there's Murdy and he's he's part of this lawn business.
And Devil's like, and I'm like, what are you doing?
He's like hey, I'm like, okay, well how are you?
He's like, I just I was laughing because I'm like,

(13:29):
what are the odds. I'm walking through the you know,
the Radio Works company parking lot in Devil's Lake and
there's Murdy rolling by, you know, on part of his
summer gig basically, and oh so good to see him.
He's such a hit, you know, we were blessed to
have him here. He was a competitor boy, so great
to see that he's having success as well. Finally, just
really quick, all your coverage from you Indie hockey will

(13:52):
be coming from the very deft hands of Brad Slawsman,
who will My biggest interesting thing that came to me
this week was from Brad Berry during our Hawktok Coaches show,
where he said it's not on the realm of possibility
of splitting duty of goaltender duties. They may have a rotation,
but I'm like, boy, that would be hard if the

(14:13):
guy that went last week and has another good one
on Friday to take him out. You know, you don't
you ride the hot goaltender so to speak. But that
may be plausible according to his statement. So I guess
we'll be following Brad's coverage. Huh.

Speaker 2 (14:26):
Yeah. I hope the backup goalies name is like Joe
Smith or something so we can spell it right. Yeah,
it's gonna take me, I don't know, mid season to
figure out how to spell that new goalies name.

Speaker 1 (14:37):
Yeah, I'm glad that I don't have to do it
on a regular basis, But I tell you what, we'll
see it at the Alais tomorrow. It's it is a
big it's as big as they get. I know a
lot of talk has happened what's happening in fargoing rightfully,
So it is a big game nationally, but it's not
going to change our picture at all, really, So our
picture is right in front of us tomorrow afternoon at

(14:58):
the Alier Center, and and it's big as well. So
appreciate you diving into it with us a little bit.
And we look forward to your coverage and your team's
coverage of all the happenings in sports of all levels
here over the next several days and weeks ahead. So
we'll talk to you tomorrow afternoon. Have a great rest
of your Friday.

Speaker 2 (15:14):
Sounds great. Can't wait to football with you tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (15:16):
