Speaker 1 (00:00):
Friday morning as we welcome to the program with a
regular visit on Friday mornings. Whether he likes it or not,
the sports editor of the ground Fork CHERYLD morning.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Tom, I like to wake up with Tim and Paul.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
There's no doub Oh wow, we're gonna use that in
a liner. Yeh, goodness sakes. Holiday weekend. I just mentioned
you off line here, Tom, I said to you that,
you know, for many around there, it's a first chance
of summer vacation with an extended holiday weekend, and you're

(00:40):
looking around like what vacation? Look at all the things
that we're covering over the next seventy two hours.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Right Yeah, especially you know you look at Monday, like
for me at the Herald, that's a big day for
a quick turnaround to kind of preview the state tournaments
for the weekend, and it just happens to be the
busiest state tournament weekend coming up after that. You know,
we've talked about before where Grand Forks is gonna host

(01:04):
UH State tennis, State A Baseball, and State A softball,
and then Fargo is also going to have Class B
State baseball, Class B State softball and girls soccer, and
so just trying to keep track of everybody in the
you know, even on the Minnesota side, you don't see
team's falling off very quickly. Here we got East Grand

(01:25):
Forks Senior High won a couple of games in surprising
fashion yesterday, and Sacred Heart Girls are still alive. So
spring is just that time of year here where everybody's
hitting the postseason at the same time, Tim go ahead with.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
Tom, Tom, do you have somebody out in Bizmarck for
the state track.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Yeah, so we've got you know, the the Fintal Forum
has has two writers and a photographer out there, and
you know, so we we've been able to get some
some photos. You know, was able to to run a
photo of you know, the Red River thirty two runner
Elijah Defoe, and then uh, you know, got a couple
other local area photos the Hillsboro Central Valley seventh grader

(02:09):
who won the thirty two hundred, and then uh, I
just tracked down from here in Grand Forks. Uh, some
area local angles tracked down the the girl from Nelson
County who won the shot put. Uh, she's out of Michigan.
North Dakota goes to the Dakota Prairie High School won
the shot put over Elizabeth Pinkey Ofhatton Northwood By by

(02:31):
a tiebreaker. Actually, so I tracked her down by phone.
And that's just the way we've kind of handled this
state meet, just with kind of uh, the way the
way things go in the in the spring here with
so much going on, sometimes it's hard to dedicate eight
hours on the road driving to Bismarck, So uh do
our best to track it down from Grant Forks and

(02:52):
and that way we're we're freed up to. I also
chased down some some East Grand Porks softball yesterday. I
see you're able to do some things like that and
hit a few areas.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
So just to give you a kind of us a
preview of what Monday may look like or Tuesday's coverage
will be, Like, what are you hearing about the I
guess the anticipation of what a state softball tournament will
be like at all breck Field in Grand Forks. What
are you hearing anything? I mean, obviously it will be

(03:22):
good if we can get a Grand Forks school or
two in in there as well, But what are you
hearing right now out there? Just in preliminary looks as
far as the talk about having a state softball tournament
at all.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
Breckt Yeah, well I would suggest that you carpool there.
It's not the best timing in terms of, you know,
the overpass being shut down right now. Yeah, but what
all things considered, I mean, it's a great facility, and
everybody's excited to play there, I think, and I've heard that,
I think they're gonna use all I'm sorry, the Pollard

(03:55):
Center U and E's indoor football practice facility as a
place to warm up to get some throws in. I
don't know if you take ground balls there exactly, but
oh yeah, I think that's kind of interesting. You know,
you don't have a side field like maybe you would
have in some sort of different environment. But I think

(04:15):
teams are interested to play there. I know it's made
for great photos for us. A lot of local teams
have taken advantage of it already at the high school level.
You know, it'd be good for us if if red
River were to advance. You know, they got to they
got an EDC semi final today. Grand Work Central has
a loser out game, and Central actually almost pulled off

(04:37):
an upset there, losing ten to eight to the one
seed Fargo North, so they're they're still battling, but it'd
be nice to get red River there so we have
at least one dog in the fight. Otherwise, you know,
it might be looking to swap a state tournament coverage
with somebody in Fargo if if the Rhetoric girls soccer
program were to advance in Fargo. So that's kind of

(04:59):
what I'm looking at, trying to see if Ridever Baseball
was able to come out of the the e DC.
They're gonna have to go through the loser side here,
but those those couple of things I'll be watching here.
We're starting to see the Class B field fill out,
so trying to get a handle on, you know, Thompson Baseball,
Hillsboro Central Valley Softball, Who's who's advancing and who I

(05:21):
need to preview here for the state tournament week?

Speaker 1 (05:26):
I know you put so you put Wayne Nelson back
to work last night. Done?

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Yeah. I mean I feel like sometimes for me, the
races are like the forgotten element, just because you start
diving into brackets and you get you're trying to handle
the prep scene or even the college scene, and all
of a sudden, it's kind of like, oh yeah, about
those races. You know, so fortunate to have Wayne Wayne
on the beat last night at River City Speedway. Sounds

(05:53):
like Jade Hastings ran away with the sprint feature and
Wayne Nelson's got that covered. And not only does Wayne
cover it, but he was my photo taker last night
as well. Swayne can truly do it all.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Saw the game times for home games for North Dakota
football come across this week. On the football side, it
will start with a a night game again for the
home opener against Portland State. Does Portland State are they
still under Barney Barney Ball or whatever they're doing out there,

(06:29):
or is that a new coach now out there? And
what do you feel about any thoughts basically on the
game times coming in for this fall.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Yeah, I kind of like the way they've got it
metered out now. I think it's cool to do one
night game. I don't want a lot of night games,
but I think it's cool to do all night game.
I thought the Montana game last year was really kind
of different, fun and of course, you Indy coming back
to win it was helpful. And then you know, and
then middle of the year doing the three o'clock kicks

(07:02):
and then towards the end of the year doing the
one o'clock kicks. I like the way that sets up.
I don't know about everybody else, but I think that's
good for me. I haven't dug into Portland State. I don't.
I don't know if they're still playing Bruce Barnum ball.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
Yeah, out there.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
He and Bubba We're a fun matchup. Bruce Barnum. I
love how he was at Portland State, and like because
it was a big market too. I feel like he
could just say whatever he wanted, correct, you know, he
could just kind of be the Carnival Barker a little bit.
And I feel like I played well in Portland right, Like,
if you're going to be little fish in big pond,

(07:44):
you know, be loud and proud.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
I guess, oh no, no doubt. I'll let him in
here just in a second. But I do want to
just say a couple of things before we get too
far along, because I had it on my eye list. No,
I think we talked about this, but again, great column
on somebody who you knew of Thomas Gabe Gabrielson was outstanding.
But I also like to say there was two other

(08:08):
things in regards to most recent columns a Rob Styles
going into the un D Athletics Hall of Fame for
wrestling and golf coaching. I mean his golf run in
the nineties with some of those teams were awesome. And
then also writing about Kenna Curry and the year that
she's had throwing and continuing onward here into a national

(08:30):
throwing picture with what she's done at the University of
North Dakota. So just a couple of columns that I
just took great interest in. I thought they were so
well done and I just thought you should know about that,
and I really appreciate you guys hitting on those things
really timely. Thank you.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Yeah, Kevin Feed wrote up the Rob Styles story, so
speaking of Wayne Nelson, and we also got Kevin fee
So you can't quit us at the Harrold.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
Sometimes just keep coming back for more. I guess. So
that's awesome. Okay, Tim, what what are you going with?

Speaker 1 (09:06):
You know you or could coach those golf teams that
robbed Yeah, but the players he had.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
Just point them out there and tell them to play
well and in a hurry back I guess basically, yeah,
But I just I enjoyed those reads. I I That's
why I always say getting a subscription digital or otherwise
in the Herald is is so important still because we

(09:34):
get stories like that, and uh, they're really fun trips
down memory relane or the highlight of a of a
person like a track athlete who's out of South Dakota
that has thrived here at un D whose parents are
Jack Rabbits, Hall of Fame Jack Rabbits. Really wild, Uh
you know story there to think about that. We got
one out of South Dakota and yeah, so really really

(09:58):
cool story there as well. I know you said local sports,
high school sports the name of the game. What else
has got Tom Miller's attention as we turned the corner
into summer?

Speaker 2 (10:07):
Tom, Oh boy, good question. You know, I'm still trying
to track down some community football recruiting news here and there.
You know, it looks like they've got a Delvin Cook
junior not to be confused with you know, Delvin Cook
of the NFL, but Delvin Cook junior wide receiver out

(10:28):
of Texas. So I'm curious to track that down, mostly
to hear kind of you know, where pass crossed and
how that happened. And so one of the things I'm
watching is you know, I think you and he kind
of got the base of its twenty twenty six Uniti
football recruiting class out of some of their traditional recruiting areas,
and now I think they've kind of taken the time

(10:50):
to take some bigger swings a little a little outside
their their natural footprint, which I think is always interesting
you kind of take a little bit more of a chance.
But I think there's you know, sometimes some high reward
with some of those guys that you track down and pinpoint.

Speaker 3 (11:05):
Well, it's yeah, I mean, it's a never ending, it's
twenty four hour news cycle when it comes to college
football now, with with all the different things, there's no
there's no moment of respite in the world of college
football especially it's it's on all the time. And yeah,
I guess since that's your beat, I'm glad it's you

(11:26):
because I don't want to be on all the time.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
So I hear, yeah, you got you gotta fight your
way to avoid working twenty four seven. You do it to.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
Yourself, no doubt, Tim, anything else for Tom today, No,
I'm I'm set. I tell you what, Tom. We'll continue
to follow things for those great columns and pieces already
in recent editions, recent additions. Really appreciate that and look
forward to all the coverage you're able to glean by
utilizing all your connections throughout the region and state here

(12:00):
in the days to come. One last thing. Next week,
we'll talk probably about Red River boys golf as they
continue enter Central by the way, as they count down,
and he's Grand Forks as they now get into postseason
tournament action and all have interesting chances along the way,
So we'll follow those stories and more. But until then,
we'll talk about baseball, softball, track and field, and we'll

(12:22):
follow it all in the Saturday and Sunday coverage in
the Grand Forks Herald at the Grand Forksh Herald dot com. Tom,
thanks for this, have a great weekend ahead.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
Absolutely great to shout with you guys.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
Take care all right, there you go, There goes Tom Miller,
and yeah, he's hard at it because there's plenty to
cover right now as we close out the month of May.
And as I mentioned, we didn't even touch on the
high school golf piece, which for those local golf programs
all should be in some decent contention. If everything goes right,

(12:54):
to say the least, that will be some future stories
as well for Tom and his team. So appreciate Tom Miller,
a sports editor at the Grand Forks Herald, dropping in
with us on a Friday morning. So there we go.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
I have no idea how they keep all of that.
They've got to have a big whiteboard or something, don't
they are.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
Well, I think now that they're so mobile, I think
they must have like a universal calendar that they all
just click on on their phones or whatever and just basically, yeah,
they just basically like, Okay, here's everything in front of us. Everybody,
you know, put your name next to what you're covering
thene We'll go from there. So kudos to them. They

(13:36):
got a lot on their plate. Be grateful that we
have a sports team here. I was just talking to
people about this the other day. Sue Falls, you know,
used to be the argus leader, used to have a
huge staff, and now they have like one person in
their whole building, like in Sue Falls. So so be

(13:57):
grateful for having what we have here and and follow
it and don't be one of those people that says
I counted all the words in a central story and
there's not as many words in the Red River story
or vice versa, because if you ask Wayne Nelson, he
used to take calls on that. By the way, yeah
I know, which is just crazy. So anyway, our thanks
to Tom Miller, sports editor of the Grand Forks Herald.

(14:20):
Don't be that person, is what I'm saying. Top of
the hour news coming up, but before we get to that,
we got to get to our local news from Eagles
