Speaker 1 (00:00):
Tom Miller, the sports editor of the Grand Forks Hero. Morning, Tom,
Good morning guy.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
It's this nice, beautiful sunny day in Grand Sport.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Hey, I was I just actually just finished reading the
article on Carter Client Saucer. That was fun, that was interesting.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Huh yeah, I figured, uh, you know, it's about time
I caught up with the Carter Client Saucer and asked
him a little bit about you know, being the being
the son of the famous dad. Uh. He handled it
really well.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
I was mostly curious, I said, you know, with the
last name like Client Saucer. I mean, every every class.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Has got to come to a halt when when you're
going through roll call, like is that annoying?

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Is that annoying or do you not mind it?

Speaker 2 (00:48):
And then he was quick to say, like, it's awesome.
Everybody seems to know my dad here. But he's a freshman.
Maybe it'll annoy him by the time he's a junior.
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (00:57):
Well. And you know his classmates though, I mean they
probably they weren't born when you know, Jim Clinsaucer was
doing what he was doing at the University of North Dakota.

Speaker 5 (01:08):
So you know a lot of vikings or the or
the Vikings.

Speaker 4 (01:12):
Yeah, so you know, maybe they're you know, the client
saucer name to them. You know, if they were to
if you're they were to say it in class, a
lot of the classmates would be like, huh, okay, you know,
I mean they they don't they don't necessarily put two
and two together unless he's got a TikTok page or
something like that.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
I mean that maybe.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
I asked.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
I asked Carter. I said, uh, you know, do you
have memories of you know, I don't know, growing up
with the Metrodome or you know, being around the Vikings.
And you know, as I kind of looked back at
how the dates lined up, he basically said, like, I
was too young to have really a vivid childhood memory
of growing up around the Vikings. He said, I wish

(01:54):
I did. Yeah, And I was like, you know, I
kind of like paused and forgot how old I was
and went back and looked, and how did you know
Jim retired in twenty eleven. The kid is probably four
years old? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (02:06):
All right, yeah, you know we we then the Monday
press conference, it was fresh on everybody's mind, you know
that they were getting get barraged with the you know,
the Montana game, and and the more I thought of it,
you know, in the vehicle out to the airport, and
I just was like, you know, it's not the last possession.

(02:27):
It is, it's part part of it. Defensively, I mean,
they they blew coverage there and and had issues. They
did change what they were going to do from Kansas State.
People don't think they did. They were coming with pressure
up as opposed to the Kansas State game. But there
were just other chances throughout the game. Jerry Kaminski said
to me after the game. He said, Paul I, I,

(02:47):
I just missed too many passes today. It's like everybody's
got their thing where they can say, if that would
have went better today, we would have walked out with
a win against Montana. In the end, it didn't. But
I don't think it was just one thing or an
officials call it just they all added up to why
it's tough to win there. And that's my take on that.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Yeah, you know, I think, uh, in the uh, in
the moment, looking at the really short term, you know,
I'm sure it's very frustrating. You know, I've heard from
a lot of frustrated fans that you know, are you
and he just can't can't win close games, can't win
in the fourth quarter, you know. And I guess I

(03:31):
don't know, maybe my take is just a little more optimistic.
I guess looking at the big picture, they were in
that game. They were in the game at Kansas State,
and maybe previously they weren't in that game. And I think,
if you're gonna start a sophomore quarterback, these are the
moments you need to learn from. If you're going to
start a true freshman corner, you know, these are the

(03:53):
moments you need to learn from. And I think, uh,
you know, if if you believe in Eric Schmid and
his staff and his you know, is this the worst
roster he's going to have in his tenure? Uh? You know,
I if he's putting the guys he wants in place
as you move forward, recruiting class through recruiting class, transfer
class through transfer class. I just think like people should

(04:15):
step back and just say, man, they were in the
game in Walkriz. They've been losing by three touchdowns out
there in Missoula the last few you know, handful of
years that they were out there. You know, they had
they hadn't challenged the Power five team like that before. Sure,
you'd like him to win. You need him to win
at some point. Learn how to do this in these
close games. Sophomore quarterback, first time head coach, a roster,

(04:40):
you're still rapping your fingerprints on. I think there's a
ton to like about where UNI football sits.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
M Did you think that Kaminski was going to be
this good? Obviously when they send him in as the
number one guy, they saw something right.

Speaker 5 (04:57):
How about you?

Speaker 1 (04:58):
Would you think I am surprised impressed?

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Yeah? I think you know, some of the accuracy ups
and downs that we saw in Montana were some of
what I saw in fault camp that kind of tempered
some of my expectations or how I would grade him out.
And I hate to say a cliche phrase, but like
there's just something about that kid that's a gamer, and

(05:27):
you can learn so much from practice, and there's other
things you can't learn from And I think, you know,
the biggest thing to me, and maybe we learned it
with JJ McCarthy is just like pocket presence, ability to
get rid of the football under real, actual defensive line pressure.
I think that it's hard to replicate that in practice

(05:47):
when you're wearing a red jersey, and so it's hard
for me to understand, Like I, I didn't know that
that Jerry would look that comfortable in the pocket, be
that poised, kind of be that leader, and I didn't
know that he'd on the football. He's a team's leading
rusher through three weeks. I'm sure that they would like
to kind of change that and get some of their
running backs going. But you know, those are some of

(06:09):
the things that I didn't have the greatest pulse on that.
We're learning that he's composed, that he's a really athletic runner,
and I think he's just these late game situations are
only going to make him better.

Speaker 4 (06:22):
Malachai McNeil wears one of those special numbers. He's been
spectacular with some of the things that he's done. But
you know, I think we haven't probably talked enough about,
you know, Lance Rutger getting closer to the line of scrimmage,
having to be you know, having offensive tackles get their
hands on him far earlier than he's ever had to

(06:44):
deal with when he started here as a as an
outside linebacker. And boy, the lat so far, so far
for me through the first handful of games here. I
think he's been adjusting marvelously. He's made some great plays
in that role now playing closer to the line of
scrimmage in this four four man front look. And I
think Lence Rutger obviously wears number zero for a reason. Uh,

(07:08):
we need to talk more about what he's been doing
up front, because he is wrecking things as the rucker.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
Yeah, yeah, he's uh, you know, he's one of those
guys you come into you come to this year, and
you know you always thought really highly of him, that
the ceiling was really high, that maybe, you know, playing
the spot he's gonna play in this new defense is
going to be was going to lead to big things.
But there was also this feeling like it's it's time
to stop talking about potential and start talking about production.

(07:35):
And uh, you know, he's answered that call two sacks
at Montana. I I think he's a kid that could
just continue to take off. He's uh, he's exactly what
that what that defense needs.

Speaker 4 (07:50):
Yeah, I will say, if you're looking While some people
in a press conference will give you a two minute answer,
Lance Rutger will give you the ten second answer. So
if you're looking for just a clip, audible clip. You'll
get it from Lance, maybe even less than that. Sometimes
he is shortened to the point with his responses, which
is which there's a place for that too.

Speaker 5 (08:11):
And I like that. I like that.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
So the thing about it is Valpraiso.

Speaker 5 (08:17):
I don't know a lot about him.

Speaker 4 (08:18):
I know they scored late against Western Illinois to kind
of close things there. You know you mentioned something here
Tom that I was talking to Tim about I said
the last hour, I said, you know what I want
to see for a homecoming game. I want to see
our offensive line create some just massive holes for these
running backs. Let's get a Sawyer Sidell run of sixty

(08:40):
yards for a score, or is Gavin z Barth run
for forty yards in a score or something like that.
Let's crank out some holes and let these guys go
to work and have a day where the line and
the running backs because to be honest with you, where
I thought the line in the running backs would really
thrive coming into the season, and they have had some
nice runs and they have done some things I haven't

(09:01):
seen kind of like where it's just this bulldozer type
of run game yet where Jerry Kaminski has been getting
a lot of the the running yards. I want to
see some bulldozing type running game. Perhaps maybe we'll see
it tomorrow. That's what I'm hoping for.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
Yeah, I think it should be a great opportunity for that. Yeah,
if this game is close, you and he has a problem.
And so this is this is the week to see
more Colton Burnell hurdles. And uh there's no Donovan Hunt
this year, so you gotta you gotta find the new,
the new long touchdown garbage time guy. Maybe it's Charles

(09:39):
lan Maybe it's Charles langama on a maple girl.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
Maybe this is just a weak well and that's that's
just it. I know that this staff is still trying
to heal up too, so it will be interesting to
see who actually gets the reps and the time. And
so you know, they go into an open week afterwards,
so uh, you do. I would assume heavy rotation, but
you got to see kind of your regular guys, if

(10:02):
they're healthy enough to go, they're gonna at least get
some reps right from the get go early and hopefully
they take advantage and then turn it over and let
you know, coach talks about building that depth that might
be one of those games where you have a chance
to do so at least that's what you hope.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
Yeah, you know, I heard him address the team the
other day, just like, hey, we're gonna dress more guys
than we usually do, and he was talking from a
logistics standpoint about, you know, make sure you you're saving
the right room in the locker room type thing. So,
you know, I think not that they're maybe not that
so much that they're anticipating a blow up, but just
they do have a lot of guys banged up. They

(10:38):
got the Tour de France stationary bikes set up now,
which always tells you they're at a point in the
season then that that guys are doing some of that.
So I think I think there's gonna be some personnel
surprises a little bit on Saturday, and sometimes that makes
for a fun, fun little twist to uh to a

(10:59):
UNI football weekend.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
All right, Tim, what else you got for Tom?

Speaker 1 (11:03):
Well, I was gonna say, is it were anticipating a blowout?

Speaker 4 (11:07):
Is that what you're saying?

Speaker 3 (11:10):
Yeah, I mean, hey, if I'm predicting a score, it's
probably forty nine to seven. Yeah, you know you and
he's probably a thirty point favorite. Yeah, Balpo lost a
D three Adrian at home. They gave up. They scored
what what they score on Western Illinois.

Speaker 5 (11:28):
Thirty thirty some I think, yeah, they're around thirty. Yeah,
it was.

Speaker 3 (11:32):
It was the most they've ever scored on a scholarship team.
So I'm sure somebody's looking at that and saying that's scary.
I think it was also like twenty eight doughnut really fast.
So yeah, I don't know how much to take away
from that.

Speaker 4 (11:44):
Yeah, the high school scene, Park Rapids picks up, or
I should say East Granforks picks up a nice road
win at Park Rapids.

Speaker 5 (11:51):
They're on the road.

Speaker 4 (11:52):
I think you would. Somebody wrote, was that your column
on the high school beat, that they hadn't played they
hadn't played World in football in forever, and uh and
and and and so they're gonna do that this afternoon
at four. Boy for coach Kosewski and his team. Uh boy,
wouldn't they like to put this in their back pocket
and start get rolling a little bit?

Speaker 5 (12:12):
That that's a big one for the green Wave?

Speaker 3 (12:14):
I think, Yeah, Yeah, that was our new, our new,
really really good. Writer Alex Baber wrote that high school
football for you this week, and uh yeah east Side
east Side's got a kind of a new look schedule
this year, and uh, I think war Old and maybe
even Roso or on it kind of that shuffle that's

(12:37):
been happened in the Minnesota State High School League where
some different teams are categorized in different divisions and so
there's a little bit of shuffling and east Side Warld
just kind of makes sense. And a World's got a
nice back Connor Lund. Uh as a run for a
ton of yards. That's the story I'd like to get
to at some point this fall, So hoping to hoping

(12:59):
to see if they got a stream here I can watch,
I think as a four o'clock football game.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
Yeah, and then the Coyotes Willison, oh and three they've
had their issues here at Cushman Field across the state
Red River U. The biggest takeaway from that article that
I understood in that one was essentially that they've maybe
had some guys go away from playing both ways and
that may be one of the things they found out

(13:25):
this past week.

Speaker 3 (13:27):
Yeah, from the streams I've watched on Red River, like
they've they've moved the football. Okay, you know, between the
twenties and just having strong stuff together, kind of self
a lot of self inflicted mistakes and things like that. Yeah,
they're still trying to adjust to that massive successful senior
class they just lost, and I think they're still trying

(13:48):
to figure out who they are.

Speaker 4 (13:49):
Yeah, well, I guess maybe we'll find out against the
Coyotes of Williston here tonight at Cushman Field Central out west.
Tom's not making that true city Yeah, Watford City Wolves.
We will have photos, Tom, and that's what I hear anyway, So.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
Yeah, yeah, probably leaving here in a few minutes.

Speaker 5 (14:11):
That's gonna say.

Speaker 4 (14:12):
They got a long trip to get out there for
game time, so save travels to them.

Speaker 5 (14:17):
Tom.

Speaker 4 (14:17):
We'll see out at the Alais Center tomorrow afternoon, three o'clock. Kick.

Speaker 5 (14:20):
We appreciate your coverage.

Speaker 4 (14:21):
We'll look for the follow up with five things you
may have missed in North Dakota's game against Valpo following
it and the whole game story and more. Appreciate you
joining us here on this Friday to get us geared
up for the weekend ahead, and we'll be following your
team in subsequent editions. Digital editions of the Grand Fork
SHEERLD have a great weekend, Tom.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
Thanks guys, I I was a pleasure to chat with
you and Tim and Tim's dog.

Speaker 5 (14:46):
Right, Yes, exactly right, Thanks Tom. Yeah, that's Bella in
the background. She's got her pig probably back there. I
think I heard so
