Speaker 1 (00:00):
The sports editor of the Grand Ports Herald, Tom Miller.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Morning Tom, Good morning guys. Chat with you as always.
Speaker 3 (00:06):
Yeah, good morning Tom. He's already on his morning commute
to get to get to writing. Even though it's a
light week in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, just two
games I think, uh in the Valley for FCS football,
they are think South Dakota States in action and the
Bison in South Dakota are in action. North to go
(00:27):
to head. It's open week. After the win against val Parreiso.
Talk to coach Schmid about that week on Tuesday night
during our Hawk Talk program. What do you do? You
feel like an open week is all that much different
than Bubba coach team or or a coach Smidt team.
It seems like the philosophy is the same. Get coaches
out to see Friday night lights, do some you know,
(00:50):
just to do the things, to talk to recruits that
are already committed and making sure that's going on. At
the same time, get some practices in, sharpen things up,
you know, get get into the details a little bit,
get healthy as well. It seems kind of to be
the pretty common refrain for open weeks, don't you think Tom.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Yeah, you know, I think if there's anything different this year,
it does feel like there's maybe an emphasis on recruiting,
and that that may be no matter where you are. Really,
it's just interesting that, you know, like twenty twenty seven
class already, you know, the timelines are so ramped up
(01:29):
than they used to be, and so, you know, I
know Coach Schmidt and his staff are pretty dialed in
on the twenty twenty seven kids and they're trying to
hold tight to the to the class they have because,
as we've talked about, their twenty twenty six recruiting class
held more competing offers than they've ever secured commitments. From
(01:51):
the downside of that is this is the time of
year that people are gonna come try to swoop in
on some of those kids, especially with their measurables. You know,
we've talked about how how they got a bunch of
six seven, six eight type kids, and those are the
kids at FBS schools are going to start sniffing around
on and so not only do you have to start
(02:14):
looking at twenty twenty seven, but you have to try
to try to tell those twenty twenty six kids, hey,
this is what we can do for you.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
But yeah, at the same time though that so many
schools have gone to a philosophy now where they're shrinking
their incoming classes of actual out of high school type
players because they're wanting to skew older. So I mean,
how many can actually sniff, you know, because there's a
lot of schools philosophically, by their coaching staffs, are saying,
(02:45):
you know, we we don't actually have that much room
to bring this many players because we're going to go
and get older. We're going to go get into the
portal and find you know, ten guys so to speak.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Yeah, and the House settlement allowed for a grandfathering in
of os sizes, but eventually you're gonna have to be
down to a certain size. And so you're exactly right,
you're not bringing in as many freshmen. And I think
where you're probably going to see it is, you know,
the the Nebraska's and the Wisconsins of the world that
(03:15):
could inflate their roster sizes up to one hundred and
thirty some. You know, you're probably having some overlap with
the SCS Dakota schools in terms of those are some
of the high end kids that North Dakota's going after
for example, Those are the kind of kids who Wisconsin
and Iowa Nebraska are considering giving a preferred walk on
(03:37):
spot to in the past. You know, will there be
will there be less overlap because because rosters can't be
as big. I think that'll be that'll be something to
watch for sure.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
And there's and there's only going to be one portal now, Uh,
there won't be a spring portal, which I wonder if
you know what everybody will think of that, because you know,
some coaches have made use of that spring portal to
kind of either move players on or end or backfill
basically from what you saw in the spring. And now
(04:11):
it looks like they're aiming to just have one portal
opportunity coming at the end of the season kind of
as the national championship and stuff arrives. It seems like
they're gonna do away with the end of spring football portal.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Yeah, And I just I'll be very curious on how
that's executed. I just feel like I never I never
cared an awful lot about portal windows because you know,
as we saw with Trey Feeney after he lost out
on the quarterback battle last year was Simon Rumfo. I mean,
if you tweak I intend to enter the transfer portal,
does it really matter if you are indeed in the
(04:45):
transfer portal or if you intend to be in the
transfer portal and I I the technical windows? To me,
I feel like it's being overblown because of the fact
that you could say you're going in at any time,
whether you're actually in there, how much does that matter?
I don't know. Maybe I'm being negative about it all,
but it just seems it seems all silly to me.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Well, you're the word guy, Tom, You're the words on
the page guy. You got to know what they mean
and whether they intend or whether they actually are. I mean,
we're going to rely on you on that one. But Tim,
what do you got for Tom today?
Speaker 1 (05:21):
Well, if they want to go other than the window
of the portal whatever, somebody's going to challenge that, aren't they?
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Yeah? Right, it's just uh and and administrators know that
right now that every quote unquote rule has no teeth,
and then every rule will probably be challenged, you know,
And that's why they're fighting for federal intervention. That's why,
you know, that's why we're such a such a holding spot. Really,
(05:54):
than true endgame here. Yeah, I mean even even to
the shint of okay, what what Why have I only
allowed to earn you know, off my name, image and
likeness for four years? Why can't it be five? Okay?
Or why can't be six? Six? Can it be seven?
You know? We just there's just a path that h
(06:17):
has no end. And then that's why I think at
some point they need help from Congress here. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Well that's the thing I was just talking about yesterday,
Like you know, the quarterback at Vanderbilt, uh, you know,
he's he's petitioning for for more. Uh. And then of
course the basketball player at Tennessee, he he wants more
because he probably even though he's a great college basketball player,
his size and stuff may not translate to the NBA.
So he would want to stay longer at Tennessee because
(06:45):
you know, staying at Tennessee has its uh financial good
things there for the basketball program. And I think there's
another one who is uh you know. And now we're
seeing professionals that played in the G League getting opportunities
at Anna Claia that was announced the other day. Biminji
State has already done it. On the hockey side, So
(07:05):
who's to say we won't have former U and D
hockey players coming back to play again after their professional
careers again. Who knows to Tony Harkis will come back
to this is crazy.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
One last shift has a whole new meaning.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
Right yeah, yeah exactly.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
And I stay out.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
Well, you know, and I and I made mention and
it got me kind of irked. I was moham Lana
and I was thinking about this the other day, and
I was telling Tim about this yesterday. I said, you
know how we maligned Myron Allen, the guard who was
here for a cup of coffee. You know, think about
what he's thinking right now, like they.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
They ruled me.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Yeah, that's crazy to me. They they basically said, you
can never go to college. You're ineligible. We can go
to college, but you know you'll never be eligible to
play because he played like four minutes of an exhibition
game against the FB. I mean that's crazy to me.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Yeah, that that would be a really fantastic where are
they now? Story in the Herald Looking back at how
attitudes have changed towards all that, I mean, yeah, I
mean you look back at like Jeremy Bloom You remember
that receiver from yes, who couldn't earn off being a
world class skier right to play football?
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (08:26):
He attitudes and everything has changed.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
He was an Olympian who was a gold medalist or whatever,
just a huge type of was it moguls or whatever
it was or what you know. I mean he just
was a superstar and they're like, no, sorry, you can't
earn anything. Goodness sakes, Yeah, I mean.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
I mean, yeah, it's crazy when you talk about it.
I mean there's the hi old kid, a goaltender recruit
for UND who played in an exhibition game with the
Tampa Bay or whatever they're called Lightning. I mean, and
so now here go back to the us HL and
(09:09):
hopefully somewhere down the line you will be here. I
mean that's just whoever heard of that before?
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Yeah, well you see that. We see more and more
of that kind of worked into partnerships, you know, if
you got draft picks, like hey, we know you're you know,
kind of like a USHL. But kids are going back
to high school, like you can come in here and
get your feet wet. We'll do some things and then
you go back to North Dakota.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
I don't know, Yeah, I just uh yeah, we're in
a wacky, weird world. And like I say, the people,
I feel sad for the compliance people like their job.
Every day rules change, like oh we're operating under these
Oh not today, you're not.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Okay, We're going to have you patrol the highway, but
we're not going to give you a car. Yeah, the road.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
That's unbelievable. But yeah, So anyway, we'll talk more U
and D football as we get into next week, but
we talked enough about the NCAA and all that stuff
as well. Local sports. I mean, the Green Wave are
looking for three in a row at home tonight against
Pelican Lake and the and the Vikings come into town.
So that's something to watch. Can the night stay perfect
(10:18):
they go on the road. A lot of interesting storylines
local high school football as we hit Friday night lights, right.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
Tom, Yeah, absolutely. You know Red Rivers got Kindred. I'll
be very curious to see, you know, how how far
is Red River from from that, because Kindred very well
could be the best team in the state. You know,
I know, their ranked number two in their division, which
is just a matter because they haven't played each other
or whatever. But you know, Kindred knocked off somebody from
(10:46):
that top division. Who then turns around and you know,
so like comparing scores, you could say Kindreds the best
football team in the state, regardless of the division, which
is wild considering town size, shows you what kind of
athletes they have, and so curious how far off Red
River is there. And then you know Central Central seven
good opportunity to stay stay unbeaten. I think sou's a
(11:08):
little better than they were last year, obviously, so Central,
So yeah, be fun Friday night score watching.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
You know, I was just telling Tim and and he
obviously follows probably more of the the local the you know,
the immediate teams and greater Grand Forks and the you
know Grand Forks, Rid River and Central. I come from
the b background, so I like to peer into a
couple of interesting ones out on the region, like you know,
Grafton's four and one, Park Rivers five and zero. Like
(11:37):
the last time that Park River and Grafton have had
like a meaningful rivalry football game from just down the road.
That's gonna be fun for those communities tonight. I think
that'll be a lot of fun for them.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Yeah, Park River's having a really nice year, you said
in their high school baseball season, They've got some nice
athletes coming through right now.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Yeah. I mean that's the thing at Ebbs and Flows, right,
and they're all translating into apparently good athletes? Are they
They're good athletes for just about every sport that they play.
It seems like get those schools a lot so and
that seems to be Yeah, no doubt about it. So
the whole region is set. Believe can you believe it
that you know, you and E men's basketball is gonna
(12:15):
have exhibition games in mid October.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
I'm just pumped in all our Greater Grand Four schedules,
including the you know, UNI basketball and UNI hockey, And
I can't believe what this is a last Saturday without
college hockey.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
Yeah, that's crazy. And then you're like, okay, when does
March arrive again? How does that work? Or when when
does that come? So lastly, Tom, I was just gonna say,
maybe there's two stories that I think we can close on,
you know, for you and D to see undie volleyball
knock off South Dakota last night. Awesome stuff if you're
a U and D fan. Uh, you know, from the
(12:53):
standpoint of you know, winning four of their last five,
including opening up the summing league season. I'm not sure
many people have we're thinking that, but that's a nice
thing for a feather in their pocket going down to
Fargo Saturday. And then the Jaden Keeler story is just
an amazing story from last week with all the additional
awards and things that she picked up throughout the week.
(13:13):
On the cross country side, those those are fun stories
here as we got through this week.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Yeah, you know, there's been a couple of tough falls
here lately of finding good, good stories in the und athletics,
but this year, certainly with the soccer team off to
one of its better starts, and then you know, cross
country maybe being able to challenge for a Summer League
title on the women's side. But I didn't see that coming.
(13:41):
With volleyball last night, you know, Seton four ended up
going twenty four to twenty two. South Dakota was the
last I saw for a moment, and then when I
when I pulled the stats back up and it said
three to one final, that caught me off guard a
little bit. I was certainly wasn't expecting that what USD
was preseason number two, U and D was preseason number
seven in the summer League. Yeah, so, you know, exciting
(14:04):
for them. They got looks like they have some talented
freshmen with a you know, freshman setter and freshman six'
three girl From california who played for the first time last.
Night so, yeah, definitely, uh definitely a great way to
start conference play for the volleyball.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
Program, well And Page, barber the, VETERAN i, mean she's
just like a twenty three Kills she's a. MACHINE i
mean if you just feed the beast and and let
her go to, work and that always helps those freshmen
along when you know you got a reliable veteran like.
That and then you guys did a great story On
Todd Schafer's you and d men's golf team think about
that story as. Well that was awesome as.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Well, yeah, yeah no. DOUBT i mean you look AT
uh going to that event IN uh In Des moines
and you, know Beating Northcota state In South, dakota winning
that event that was uh and doing it all with
local kids to two long time Grants Forks Natives is head.
(15:01):
Coaches you, know you've that's that was definitely a feather
in their. CAP i noticed at that event too that
THE i think the kid who took third Was Miles,
bollinger the son Of Brooks, bollinger who competes At Indian
Hills Community. College yeah, yeah a lot of local size.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
There yeah, that how about? That what a good what
a what a great golf mind you've become, There, tom.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
