Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's link up with the sports editor of the Grand
Forks Herald, Tom Miller.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Good morning, Tom, Good morning, guys, Good morning Tom.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
Tonight. See you've got a basketball hoop in the yard.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
Yeah. Yeah, I don't know if I'll be shunned from riverside,
but I'm teaching the neighborhood what a basketball hoop looks
like right now.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
I was gonna say that your homeowners Association okay with that,
because that's that's hockey country there.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
I don't know, I haven't got any eggs in Yeah.
Speaker 4 (00:31):
That's hockey and tennis country.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
You're kind of demonstrating that, you know, hey, we're gonna
shake things up a little bit and and have a
hoop up. But that's good to see for your young
guys there. That's awesome.
Speaker 4 (00:44):
You know.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
We're a week removed and we're onto game number two.
Interesting comments this week in the press conference. One of
the more interesting comments was I didn't know if it
was going to be a tough question and ended up
being a tough question for offensive coordinator Isaac But then
when I thought about it, I was like, well, I
guess that's true. He's like you, you asked him, was
(01:05):
there anything that maybe surprised you about Jerry's Game one,
and he said, well, to be honest with you, if
I think about this, right, not really. He kind of
was the guy we thought he would be, and he's
been that in the spring and in the fall, And
to be honest with you, I think if you're North
Kota fans, with his ability to hit some passes that
were very nicely throwing some that indicated he's got good
(01:28):
arm strength, his ability to eject and use his legs,
I think it was a number one show that at
least at least was worthy, and I think it gives
North Kota fans hope that there's some good things there
to build off of, don't you.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Yeah, I think that. I mean, my biggest takeaway was
that I had no idea what to expect a quarterback.
I guess, you know, Isaac Fricty obviously has a better
handle on things than I do. But I think one
thing that's hard, at least from my perspective to Gardner
for practice, is how a quarterback is a maneuver in
the pocket. And I thought, uh, just because in practice situations,
(02:05):
you know, nothing is basically truly live, even in their
live scrimmages. You're not going to schmack the quarterback. So
I thought, I thought the way Jerry handled himself in
the pocket was pretty encouraging for you and d fans.
You know, he he made all the easy throws, he
made some of the tough ones. He used his legs.
(02:27):
That that's such a massive development. You know, if if
he goes to Manhattan and he looks uncomfortable and the
spotlight is too big for him, and and he his
passes all over the place, and you know, are yeah,
Portland State isn't having a great year. But if you're
coming into this game saying, gosh, I don't know, are
(02:48):
we gonna hit reset here a quarterback? You know, is
it is it Simon? Is it advance? You know, it
just puts the whole season on a different trajectory if
you feel like, okay, Jerry can get it done here.
I think that was a massive development in Manhattan, Tim.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
Go ahead, Tim, because they.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
It's like we made the right choice, right and he
proved it out for it. So there's a little confidence there.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Going on, right, Yeah, And I think I think it's
you know, big for a new staff too, like New
era New Knew everything. You know, Simon did a lot
of good things. He wasn't the he wasn't the center
of the ills by any means a year ago. But
I think I think the way they started, I think
(03:35):
bought even more time for the Eric Schmidt messages to
really hit home. You know, I think I think those
players are really believing in him. Obviously, you know, the
fan base does too. And and if you go there
and you lose fifty five to seven, like South Dakota
did to Iowa State, which is entirely possible in this
type of setup, you know, I think I think he
(03:59):
started naturally having some some doubts about, oh gosh, is
it a new era? You know, I just think that
was a big result, even if they're kicking themselves by
the way finished up.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
So one of the interesting things.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
And I did ask Coach Schmid about this on my
Tuesday night HOWK Talk program. I said, you know, was
there any thought because somebody had asked me, and I
was like, I don't know the answer to that. Was
there any thought to have sawyer Sidell, who had had
kind of the hotthand for breaking some runs for scores
in that game on that last series of course they
had used personnel wise Xavier lay in that sequence in situation.
(04:36):
He said, you know, honestly, we have evaluated that and
thought a lot about it, And that's an interesting question.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
We we we didn't.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
At that moment in time, but it's not to say
that we aren't thinking about that again, because that that
was you know that while you have a number of
running backs you can turn to, you know, it's right time,
right situation. I maybe they're still figuring that out a
little bit there with that running game and who's going
to get carries? When, where, what and why?
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Yeah? And you know when I was strapping on the
paths for Monday morning morning quarterback, that's that's kind of
top of the list, right is uh? You know our
eight touches enough for Sawyer side l sidle. You know
what about that final offensive sequence. I would want my
(05:27):
most dangerous back on the field at that time if
I'm trying to put myself in their position. You know,
is is a more durable back something they wanted in
that situation? You know, are they less likely to fumble?
Just in terms of body types? I or you know,
does does does Xavier pass protect better? You know, I
(05:47):
was trying to think my way through it a little bit,
but in the end, I want my most dangerous running
back on the field. Right there, I thought, when you know,
if I'm going to continue my armchair quarterback assessment, I
would say that, you know, when when Chris Climbing called
a timeout with two oh one left, that opened the
door for you, indeed to have a free passing play
on second down. Yeah, U and D was obviously in
(06:10):
a position where they probably wanted to be quite conservative
to call a timeout with two oh one left. You
know why teams do that to to save on the clock.
At the same time, you don't have to run the
football as an offense, you can. You know the clock's
going to stop at two minutes regardless, right, So I
(06:31):
thought that perhaps, like, yeah, throwing the football there, you're
you're risking a pass rush an interception possibility. But uh,
you know, if I don't know, obviously armshare quarterback, Uh
second down there, you could have seen a passing play, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
No doubt.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
I talked to coachmid about that as well, and those
are all things that have gone in the back pocket
and it's I know they've talked about it as a
staff as well, and and that's that's the name of
the game. They know that, Tim, what else you got
for Tom?
Speaker 1 (07:02):
I was gonna say, now, hold on, at two minutes,
does the clock actually stop?
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Yeah, you can't call it the two minute warning.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
They call it the two minute timeout. So yes, it
will stop back at a minute. It can't go any
lower than like one fifty eight or whatever. Basically, So yeah,
so you mean you're you're, you're, you're. Basically it's gonna
take you a few seconds to run that play.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
So it would have been a chance.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Yes, like Tom was saying, as we armchair quarterback, but yes,
that's certainly a question. Portland State. Everybody says, Oh, they've
lost two games, they haven't scored. They've played two really
good teams Tarleton, and they shot themselves in the foot.
They were their own worst enemy against Tarleton, turning it
over when they're going on drives. They've played just about
everybody at quarterback. I think they're gonna go with John
(07:52):
Key Ave Saga pol Telly, I think is the name
of the quarterback that they named the starter going into
this one.
Speaker 4 (07:59):
I'm assuming he's gonna imagine me correcting you.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
I'm assuming he's kind of the multi dimensional quarterback. But
also Northcote has got to treat it as they'll probably
see more than one. It's Barney Ball. I actually like him.
He's been he's been refreshing. We haven't seen him in
a while, he's been there for a while, but he
but he's honestly good and he and he actually Portland
State in recent seasons has been very viable, uh, you
(08:28):
know as a team in the big sky, getting little
wins here and there, picking teams off and and so
Northcote has got to have its size wide open. They
gotta they gotta get number one, win number one, so
their own one they need to win. So it's it's
going to be interesting tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Yeah, you never you never know exactly what you're gonna
get out of part of the state. There, like it's
a program with some pride. They've they've been, like you said,
they've been successful. I've seen some very very well played
you and new Portland State matchups over the years. I
remember one in Hillsboro that it was just a really
really physical, tough game, I want to say seventeen fourteen.
(09:06):
You know, those have been the type of games that
that you and Dan Portland State have gotten into Obviously,
Portland State coming off of sixty nine zero matchup with
BYU is it is tough, but the administration in Portland
State doesn't put Portland State and position to have success.
I want you, okay, you start against Tarleton. That's kind
(09:26):
of a bad break there in terms of just happens
to be a program on the rise a little bit,
and then you got BUYU. But look at their schedule
of my goodness, you fly to Grand Ports, North Dakota
from Portland and you come home and you fly to Hawaii.
What a brutal four game cash collecting experience that is.
I just, you know, even if you've got a program
(09:47):
in a great place, which they probably don't right now,
I can't. I mean even if you if you're you
and d football and you think you're you know, you've
got things headed in the right direction, that kind of
road schedule would be unbelievable. And so that's a massive
challenge for them to come to Grand Force and have
those guys locked in after starting knowing too, with the
(10:10):
Hawaii trip hanging over their head.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
Yeah, I was, yeah, certainly understand that, no doubt about it.
And again I think it's more about North Dakota handling
its business tomorrow than anything else. And and and basically
take care of the ball. They were decent at that
for good portions of that game. Ball security not giving
extra possessions away to Portland State tomorrow will be huge
(10:34):
tomorrow evening at the Alayer Center. But again expect to
see probably more than one quarterback even though they named
a starter. And yes, nobody wants their their schedule. My
favorite play of all time and meetings with the Portland
State was at Providence Park that's the home of the
Portland Timbers and John Santiago's punt return for a touchdown
as he avoided like well just about the entire team
(10:57):
that will forever live in my mind. It was incredible
to see John Santiago somehow like a magician, all of
a sudden appear in the end zone, like I'm not
sure how he got there, but he did, and it
was pretty wild. Potato Bowl tom on a fun note, like,
I know you're not a fan of potatoes, so you
probably you know, not even really celebrating this week.
Speaker 4 (11:19):
Do you have a favorite go to potato fries?
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Yeah, I'd probably go with tater tots.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Hmmmm hmmm.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
Yeah, yeah, I'd mix it up with some tater tots.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
Yeah yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Well, the thing is is that as I get older,
I almost appreciate the tot even more now because I
put it in my hot dish that I make and
I will often supplant it for fries as an alternative.
So yeah, I can't really go wrong with you there.
High school sports action. I know you guys have been
covering a couple of different things in regards to high
school football. Both Grand Forks teams on the road. One
(11:55):
in Jamestown was central there, RhD River goes to Saint
Mary's out in Bismarck. East Grand Fourth Junior High gets home,
and that's that's an interesting game to watch for the
Green Wave only for the simple reason is Staples Motley
kind of took control of that game a little bit.
And now the Green Wave get a team that they've
had some incredible battles with here in recent seasons with
(12:17):
the perm Yellow Jackets.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Yeah, I'm curious to see how that one plays out.
I watched the video stream of East Grand Forks Staples
Motley on Friday night in Manhattan, and you know, I
was impressed at times. I thought they moved the ball. Okay,
it seemed like every time they got in the red
zone they had a snap that went sailing and derailed
(12:40):
any chance of success. You know, you're getting third and
sixteen and every level of high or every level of
football that's not great in high school football especially, So
there was reason to believe a little bit that East
Grant Force to have a really nice year and this
PERM game will give me a lot better feel.
Speaker 4 (12:58):
Yeah, no doubt. Wonder if we lost Tom there.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
I think he kind of just heard him, kind of disappeared. No,
I was just gonna say, give us a call back,
Tom seven seven five double o double ow Uh. The
last thing I was going to say. I had a
question about his racing coverage about how that World of
out Laws driver Brad Schlassman's Yeah, Brad Schlassman wrote about
(13:28):
this World of out Laws driver that was leading the
race and then was that a member of the race
track here at River City or was that a traveling
like person that that works that race and was wearing
the helmet and then has had his helmet twisted around
and his glasses broke broken? Who was that person local
like that? I read that story, I was like, that's
(13:50):
that's a crazy story that came out of the World
of out Laws race that just was recently here.
Speaker 4 (13:55):
Tom.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
Yeah, I'm gonna leave the I'm going to leave the
track knowledge to win Nelson and Brad Schlast when I
can't speak, I can't. I can't speak to that one.
But saw that story, was happy. We were all over it.
But that's my extent of my knowledge.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Okay, Well, I understand racing can be, you know, just
like anything. You can have temper tantrums and guys will
sometimes fighting the pits and things like that. But to
take it out on a track official or something like that,
like seemed a bit It seemed a bit rude if
you ask me. But been breaking his glasses that doesn't
(14:31):
seem like a nice thing.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
But he didn't spit on him.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
Well, yeah, that's true.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
I guess we got into the old Second Spider issue
earlier this morning.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
Tom.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
I'm sure you're glad you I'm sure glad you missed
that one.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
It is a Seinfeld reference.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Yeah, yeah, okay, Tomorrow, what do you think North Kota
fans final thoughts are looking for going into and what
is North Kota as a team looking for going into
tomorrow night's game.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
You know, for me, I think it's an opportunity to
take care of an opponent you should take care of
and allow some of the spots that are thin on
your defense to take some snaps off. In a perfect world,
you get to a place where guys like Malachi McNeil,
Bennett Walker, Zach Lewis some of the cornerstones of your defense.
(15:27):
I thought they played a ton of snaps of Kansas State,
and I'm not sure that that is sustainable through the
course of the year. So this I think it's gonna
be really important for you and need to get out
to a nice start and allow the depth of the
roster to experience some game action. You know, not just
(15:49):
young guys, but just guys you're gonna have to count
on to be your twos and your threes throughout the
course of the year. I think you'd like to see
them get some get some playing time.
Speaker 4 (15:59):
Perfect.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Thank you very much, Tom, appreciate you dropping in with us.
We'll see you tomorrow night at the Elantre Center, and
we look forward to your write ups and your coverage
not only of you and d football tomorrow heading into

here tonight and through the weekend, so appreciate this and

have a great weekend.
