Speaker 1 (00:00):
We really went to some high level things, and as
he mentioned, you can still just be a fan and
let all the minutia just kind of basically I'll get
you a potted back up. Sorry about that, Bill, Yeah,
you're yeah, But you know, I think that's the important thing.
There are some big time things that administrators and administrations
(00:23):
around college athletics of schools of all sizes are having
to wade through and navigate, and they are going to
be happening not only today tomorrow, but over the next
probably forty five to sixty days. There are going to
be some very interesting things in times basically the way
various schools choose and choose to navigate or But I
also don't think you can just say and point and say, well,
(00:46):
that's the right decision right from the get go. I
think the lens is going to be like because there'll
be another chance to opt in in a year's time
as well. If March one is the true red button day, basically.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
That's right, that's right. And so I think there's just
so much more that we're going to learn over the
next as you said, three to six months, and then
you know, whatever happens there, Paul, there's going to be
challenges to that too. So you know, unless, as we said,
unless something happens in DC where there's maybe you know,
some sort of legislation that maybe puts at a federal level,
(01:24):
you know, states in line, if you will, and a
limited anti trust exemption in some way, shape or form,
so that we can protect this thing called college athletics
that we've loved for over one hundred and fifty years. Right.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
And I will also say that it goes down to
we talked about we'll have a schedule, we'll have athletes
to play those games. But I also say that when
you look at the big picture here, we still have
things at the University of North Dakota that fans you
can support by just going to games, buying tickets, unders
(01:58):
you can support by being part of Champions Club. That
doesn't change, Nope. And you can also be involved in
things like Alston and all those things within the Champions
Club that gives you opportunities. And you can also work
with our friends now with the you know, our Jonathan
and Matt will guide you over at eighteen eighty three, correct,
So I mean that doesn't change, No.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
It doesn't. In Paul, you know what I appreciate you
saying that, because if you zoom way out, the university
under the leadership of doctor Armacass is doing so well,
you know. And I mean, obviously we're going through a
legislative session here, and you know that's incredibly important. And
you know, we're we're a peace, we're peace of the university,
(02:40):
and you know we have to you know, do our
part for sure. But the university's doing tremendous right now,
and we've got to have to keep that momentum going.
That was his word of the year this year is momentum.
And you want to keep the momentum going. But I
say this to our coaches and I'll say it to
our student athletes and staff. We have great things happening
here at the University of North Dakota. If you want
to be a part of it, be a part of it.
(03:01):
But you know, for some you know, if it's either
a transactional thing or you have to, you know, think
about going somewhere else. Well, you know what a chapters end.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Yeah, yeah, that's true too. And the you know, the
other thing is is that we're in the very real
of the winter spring season kind of kicking on here
as we're now making our way into the back end
of basketball seasons, hockey seasons, outdoor track seasons. Around the corner,
they're still working an indoor season. Golfs will be ramping up,
(03:31):
Softball literally will be starting here, which is crazy to
think about. I guess we had a brand new facility.
Can't wait to bring that online because whatever happened in
the fall when we did that opening night was perhaps
the cool one of the coolest things I've been a
part of being around the University of North Dakota. So
we talk about that facility coming online, there's another facility
(03:53):
just waiting for some things. It's I don't there's no
finite thing that you can say, like it's going to
be eight am where athletes will be moving in or
something like that. But there is reality here that in
the next whenever that some of these athletes will have
new locker rooms here in the in the in pretty
short order.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yeah. So the note Deck Insurance Company Sports Performance Center,
the addition to the Pollard Center is we're pretty much
ready to get that certificate of occupancy. It's it's it's
it's literally a day, you know, day to day right now,
And so I would say, within the next week, Paul,
you're gonna see movement over there. You know, it's almost
(04:35):
like building a house. You tend to probably not want,
not want people moved in truly until you've probably gotten
it to a certain place like ninety whatever five percent.
You can do the rest of that five percent afterwards.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
Well, you can look at okay, Hslopa Memorial Village one. Yep,
when we moved athletics over, there were still things happening
and still are still are things happening. And it begins,
and you can say, well, you could have waited longer,
but you know, it's all about the timing, and that's
(05:11):
probably gonna happen in some aspect, but you can't have
people technically in the building until you get that certificate
of occupancy and for safety precautions and all that stuff.
So that's the next step basically, And there's no timetable. Necessarily,
there's possibility here could happen soon. But but then also
(05:31):
then they have to plan when the move will happen,
and everything it's imminent.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
It's imminent for sure. The you know, the construction has
gone wonderfully and you know, so it's very imminent. But
we also have to be really logical too about other
things that still are being delivered to the building. And
so even though you might be able to come in,
you know, you have to just kind of weigh when
do you want foot traffic to go in there? And
(05:56):
we're even learning, you know, in MV one our foot
traffic patterns. You don't you won't know them until about
a year in right, So but I'll tell you what
the folks that do go in there, it's to me,
not over the top. It's very efficient. It's we want
we want our students to get bigger, stronger, faster. There.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
So a that has going to have the largest in
the Dakota's strength and conditioning area by square foot by
square foot yep uh, and so you know, largest in
the Dakota's But also that will have locker room facilities
for sports such as football, track and field, softball. Okay,
(06:35):
so that's a big that's a big change.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
So basically the hyslop sports right, sports that we're over there,
and so and then the connectivity with the hawk Walk
will be tremendous. Yeah. So you know this this past
year you know football, uh, you know, not on wood
we had great weather, but you know, they were still
it was a little bit of a tough year as
far as where they had the locker room out of
and where they came for their meetings and where they
(06:59):
practic distant you know, again, first world problems. I mean,
it was fine, it was fine, but it's gonna be
so much more efficient moving forward. And so we're excited.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
When it's in it's real, the real vision iteration. That's
when we're gonna see, like I mean, it's gonna be
truly exciting. Yeah, when you're still coming from startcher and
the pool, and then you're you know, and then finally, okay,
now the coaches are at least where they're supposed to be,
but now you're still coming from the hisslat pool where
the football locker room is, and it this is gonna
(07:33):
be real. When it happens, they're just gonna be like, oh,
so this is how it's gonna work, or at least
some you know, they'll be learning, but it's gonna be
you know, so much like Eureka moment.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
Yeah, yeah, it will be. And then you know it,
you know, when it's all said and done, when Memorial
Village to the Fieldhouse at Memorial Village. It opens up
in July August time frame. Yeah, then that whole area
will be kind of you know, you can kind of
get an idea of what's happening. And then the track
we're going to try to finish off here in the
(08:04):
summer and so so really there's still work to be
done now.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
Somebody asked me about the track really quick here as
we continue to wind down on our conversation because you've
got a full day ahead because you'll be heading to
Saint Cloud. But and we'll talk about that in just
a second. But I responded to you, correct me if
I'm wrong, I said. Somebody said, why did they do
the track or whatever? I said, because they were still
getting an equipment in to work on everything for the
(08:30):
Nodak insurance piece and also with the field and everything else,
and so they knew that they didn't want to have
that stuff running over any new track. So that was
one of the things they put to the back end basically.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
One hundred percent. And in fact, the turf. The reason
why the turf was done is because it was done
simultaneous with Albroke Field, right, so there was efficiencies that
were captured by doing the turf last summer with one
of the final projects to be is the track so
that you could kind of again not have to worry
about those big trucks going in and out and doing
(09:04):
those types of things.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
So the last thing is what got us started today
was a big thit term that Jeff Colpak has been
writing about from the forum was house settlement. What is
NDSU doing, What is U and D doing? What is
big sky schools like like schools doing. You're hearing all
sorts of answers, but what we tried to do is
(09:26):
what is a very complex thing and remains complex and
just say that there's a lot happening and shouldn't change
your fandom. There's things that are going to be cut
popping in and basically bill to put these final stamp
on that is is that U and D is looking
at everything. But also because un D has different sports offerings,
(09:47):
then say we're also in a different conference. You mentioned
the NCCHC and how that's so unique and that un
D is a member of that, so it takes into
that consideration. Basically, you're looking at a lot of things.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
We are and you know we're we're gonna we're gonna
put un d in the best possible situation. But you know,
and I appreciate Jeff's article, I really do. It's a
kind of the reason why Alex Heinder and I do
a podcast once every other week. Yeah, it is because
it's a little bit more long form, because it's hard
in just a sound bite or to be able to say,
(10:21):
you know something that there's just too much depth to
this conversation, right, and so more to come, as we
have been saying probably since COVID. But at the end
of the day, you know, we don't know what's going
to transpire between now and April seventh and that settlement date.
We really don't. We really don't, And it's just the
irony of that, and it's dripping with irony. Is April
(10:43):
seventh is the men's basketball Championship, which which I take
your pick on whether that's happened, you know, just happenstance.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Do you remember when Yukon won the national title and
then Chabasnapi and it said, hey, we can't even get
peanut butter with our with their.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Bagel twenty fourteen. That was one of the seminal moments.
And not just because I'm from Connecticut, but it really
kind of changed, you know, between Chabaz saying that and
then the one TikTok a couple of years ago with
the dumbbells.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
That's right, those two.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Were seminal moments at this point. And you know, from
what I gather, I don't think Schabaz was that hungry.
But at the end of the day he was saying it,
I think in a very broad manner, but because I
think he had opportunities, it just wasn't delivered to his
actual room. But at the end of the day, but
he he made that statement and it actually made a difference.
(11:36):
It moved, it moved needles.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Yeah, it did move needles. And so yeah, here we
are today and now this is what we're dealing with again.
We don't know exactly what the march first button of
opting in, opting out or whatever, and if it actually
comes to the mail or to reveal. Yeah, it's like
a reveal, I get right, Do you send up smoke
(11:58):
signals like the Vatican.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Move that truck exactly?
Speaker 1 (12:02):
Yeah, exactly. Who knows what that will be? I have
no idea. Maybe there'll be more to come on that
as well. Now you're going to be making your way
to Saint Cloud today, to which I think a lot
of fans are kind of like, oh, this series could
be interesting. You know, it was had some edge in
it and Grand Forks the way it played out, certainly
it's a big series for both teams right now, add
(12:25):
that certainly had something coach Anga the assistant they're certainly
in filling in on their coaches show down there. He
didn't hold back, He didn't hold back. I still feel
terrible for our stats people. I didn't realize we were
so biased.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
Well, what's interesting is, for those of you that don't
know in the listening area, one of the main stat
people is my son.
Speaker 1 (12:49):
That's gree So RJ.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
You know, kind of throwing some darts at the Javes family. Yeah,
and now, now Derek took it well. He said, well,
I kind of feel like I'm one of the best
in the country. So you know what, you know what
I just you know, you can go back, and I
think Brad Slossmann kind of validated the fact that they did.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
Okay, Yeah, I've I've always said, like you want to
talk about people up there, whenever I've been up there,
they are taking their jobs so serious. Is it is
a professional operation. And so when that guy called it
out for whatever reason, I was like, are you having
a bad day or I mean, holy cow, I mean
(13:30):
I can understand that that there was an edge in
that series, and there was probably a residual feeling or whatever,
but bringing in the stats people of all, holy cow.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
I do I do appreciate over the course of time
our are you know, are back and forth with Saint Cloud.
We've had a long history and you know, honestly, Paul,
it's really kind of in some ways good for the game.
I mean, you want a little bit of you know,
a little bit of juice, a little bit of drama.
And I think the teams know what's at steak. They
(14:02):
we need points. And I think Tim said it yesterday
and I tend to agree with him. I think teams
will be really thoughtful here. I mean, the last thing
you want to do is really put the other team
on a power play, especially that big ice sheet. Oh yeah,
And so at the end of the day, there's just
going to be more space to be had at that point.
So we're we're going to have to play really, really well.
And I agree, you know, it might be good for
(14:25):
maybe copy to some degree. As far as reading, I
think our teams are going to be in there pretty
focused because both teams need need points this weekend.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
So just be a hard fought, hard battled, but hopefully
mostly clean I guess. But yeah, I just didn't.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
Yeah, I I you know, many times it's you know,
you look, you anticipate, you know what could be. Now
watch what there's gonna be a brew ha ha. But
at the end of the day, you know, I think
both teams know that what's at steak and and we've
got to figure it out. And you know, they're they're
going through a little tough patch right now. I I
would suggest that we're going through a tough Friday night patch,
(15:03):
like at some point, you know, I know what, I know,
you can't sweep anybody if you don't win on Friday.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
That's correct.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
And so you know what, I'm worried about the first
period tonight, That's what I'm like. Then I'll worry about
the second period. Then I'll worry about the third period.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
That's uh, you know what. I'm gonna go with that
philosophy too, I meaneah, right, I mean yeah, I'm gonna
just worry about the first shift.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
Sure, first shift.
Speaker 1 (15:23):
Yeah, and then I'll worry about the second one.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
We're pulling our inner Bubba Schweiger. Yea day by day
but but but really this is a it's a all
these series are huge coming up now. But we've got
to we got to find a way to stack. We've
got to stack some things here and that would be
incredibly helpful. I think we go in twenty six in
the pair. Wise, that's that's not going to cut it.
So at the end of the day, we've got to
(15:47):
we got to get some wins.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
Well, hopefully it starts tonight. Safe travels down to Saint Cloud.
I know that you'll probably carpool a little bit and
probably keep your ear to the ground waiting for for
more things developing in the world of collegepoorts.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Yep. And then I'll watch hoops tomorrow as well. So
big one here in Grand Fork, Abs you will lake
it out and it's a big one against the jack Rabbits.
I know they got a ten point win against North
Dakota State last night, So come on out support the
guys that need their help for sure.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
Yeah, let's make it a great atmosphere at the Betty. Thanks, Bill,
have a great rest of your weekend. It's full of sports,
and we'll talk to you here again on many issues.
I'm sure appreciate you, Paul, all right, thank you. Bill Chaves,
director of Athletics, University of North Dakota, And of course
we really appreciate him swinging by to discuss some of
the big ticket, big issue items that have been in
(16:36):
the media that are oftentimes a bit confusing and still are.
But at the same time, the reality is is that
North Kota is navigating it just like so many schools
as things come online, and we'll continue to monitor and
navigate and position North Dakota here in the future days
ahead as things continue to evolve in college sports.
