Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning. It's seven thirty five on a Monday morning.
(00:03):
Let's welcome to the program. After his first collegiate head
coaching victory. It's Eric schmid Moorner.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Eric Ohn of guy, how's everybody today?
Speaker 3 (00:13):
Oh, trying to shake off all those carbs that I
encountered over the weekend, but doing great when we get
the w you know, I was just telling Tim this morning.
I just we talked about it after the game. I
just want to see how a team, you know, has
to wait throughout the day, if they how they come
out in their first action, whether it be kickoff or
(00:36):
first offensive series, defensive series. I just was really impressed
with the the dial in of energy and effort really
in those sequences there that I just, you know, really
set a great tone in those various specials and offensively
and defensively in your first series on Saturday. Is that fair?
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah? I mean you only get eleven or twelve of
these right regular season opportunity, so you should be dialed
in when it only happens that many times a year.
And how much work that the guys put in, you
know for game day. You know there's always the stat
out there where it's, hey, how much how many hours
of training and practice and all that kind of stuff
goes into an actual games. So for the guys to
(01:18):
go out there and get off to a good start,
I mean, we talk about that a lot in college football.
If you're leading that halftime, you got a great opportunity
to be able to win the game. Stats will show
that like seventy two percent of the time the team
that fleet at halftime ends up winning the game. So
it's important to get off to a good start. And
for us to you know, to be up twenty two
nothing and they didn't have a first down yet was obviously,
(01:39):
you know, I mean, a good first eight minutes of
the game.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Tim, how was wondering Aaron Comedy? Did you get to
play a lot of guys on Saturday?
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Yeah, we we really did. We played it con you know,
after we scored in the third quarter, it was, hey, man,
we're going to get everybody in the game here now,
and we need to we need to get better. Yet
with our depth, we got to continue there. There's a
lot of young guys there that you know, there's no
better teacher than experience and getting those guys out there
(02:10):
to to be able to make make mistakes in the
calls and get some experience in the calls. That way,
as coaches we can correct those mistakes. So it was good.
We played a ton of guys on offensive defense. I
think we played all the the offensive linemen that that
were eligible to play. We we held a couple guys
like like Chuck lan Gama, the running back is probably
(02:33):
our fourth running back right now. But you know, I
think it's a little bit of the art of coaching,
trying to hey, is he going to be a four
game guy here? And you know, if we stay if
everybody stays healthy there, that's probably what we're gonna do
with them. But if guys start getting banged up, we're
playing more. So we gotta we gotta work that scenario
there with him. So he didn't play, but it was
more one of those deals where hey, we want to
(02:54):
be able to use him when you know games are
really on the line here later on in the year,
and then try to be able to keep his red
shirt intact too as well. But played a ton of
guys was awesome. You get back on Sunday and everybody
you know gets in the game. There's just a different vibe,
you know, throughout the entire team that guys are excited
to be able to get out there and get real reps.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Well, I would say you mentioned the running back piece
of this and late in the game, and I know
they're rotating in guys too at that segment of the game.
But Colton Brunell, you know, took an opportunity. He had
some incredibly nice runs for you. I mean he's saying, hey,
you know, when I get out there, I'm going to
take advantage of my moments, and you just got to
love that.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
Yeah. No, I thought he did a great job. Our
running back room is really deep. You know the play
where he jumps over a safety, you know that that
was coming down the in the on the week side
of the run play, and then I thought the most
impressive thing was, hey, jumps over the safety and breaks
the next tackle. You know, right after that. He had
a really good, you know, high school career. You know,
(03:54):
I think he was ended his high school careers like
the all time leading rusher in Wisconsin football. So the
guy has done a lot of things with the ball
in his hands, and and it was awesome for him
to be able to go out there and show what
he can do. He's very very talented.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Yeah, go ahead, Tim.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
I was going to say what to you, what was
the most impressive thing of your team and what was
the thing that makes you go, wait a.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
Minute, Yeah, I just think up front, offensively, you know,
just the way we were able to move the ball
in a variety of different run plays off of it.
Really like where Jerry's at here early on. I think
he's got really good command of what we're trying to do.
And and you know, I think, you know, using a
lot of different people on offense. You know, tight ends
(04:40):
have been a real big deal here the first two
games as far as our leading, our leading pass catcher here.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
The last game was a tight end. And and you know,
I think game one there was eleven people that caught
KYD passes. Game two I believe it was eight. So
just spreading the ball around, I think that's Jerry doing
a good job of getting through his progressions and you know,
the guys doing a good job of being available when
when you know, running the routes at the right depths
and at the right spots and becoming available there. So
(05:07):
I think that was probably the thing that was the
most impressive. Was Hey, there was some plays that we
could go to based off of what we were seeing
that Portland State was doing, and a lot of that
was getting Jerry on the perimeter and then letting him
be able to to be able to make some decisions.
There is basically you know, some option plays that we
were running, wheel routes and stuff like that, you know,
(05:28):
off of some of the run action things. So really
like that, I thought that was the you know, the
best thing that we did all night. You know, things
that we need to work on. Obviously, we got to
do a better job on special teams. We got to
kick it better when there's when we get in the
red zone and if we get bogged down, we want touchdowns.
We got to be able to make field goals and
you know that was not great the other night, and
(05:48):
that'll happen. I mean, it's you know, kicking balls is
a lot like golfing at times. And some days you're
you know, you're swings in a good spot and you
feel good about it. In other days, especially you missed
the first one, you got to be able to flush
it and get to the next kick. And I think
you know that that probably hurts CJ a little bit,
just missing the first one like he did. But you know,
I think that's something you gotta It's like anything else. Man,
(06:09):
he's going to be our guy. You got to keep
putting him back out there and keep putting him back
out there and and uh, you know, he's proven in
the path that that he can do it. So excited
to be able to keep working with him and uh
and let him regroup here and get back to uh
to make him field goals for us.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Turn the page. Yeah, haven now talk about the Griz.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
Really good football team obviously, you know, home environment that's
you know, probably second to none, and Fts football. It
will be just as loud, if not louder than what
we played in a couple of weeks ago down in Manhattan, Kansas.
Really athletic quarterback do a really good job of using
him not just with his with his arm, but with
his feet too as well. Having a whole big sky
(06:54):
wide receiver that transferred in from Eastern Washington last year
that had a big game here Week one. Running back,
it's probably one of the top backs in STS football
as a Minnesota kid that that that's playing out there,
big and strong up front. The offensive line defensively do
a lot of different things. It's the you know, the
Rocky Long San Diego State movement stuff off of it,
(07:17):
so guys will be you know, twisting and rapping and
doing a lot of different things. Defensively, they try to
be disruptive and obviously they use their home field you know,
on defense too as well to be able to confuse
you and and make it make it hard and stress
you to communicate on that side of the ball. So
it would be fun. It's definitely something that you know,
(07:38):
for our program, like we got to be able to
go into a place like that and get a win
if we want to be able to be one of
the top teams in FCS football. So it'll be a
great test for us on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Yeah, you mentioned the Eastern Washington transfer Michael Worthman. He
had six catches for one hundred and twenty yards, including
a touchdown and one that went for seventy six yards,
and he also would or carries, so they're they're kind
of using him in a variety of ways just to
get him to his touches, right, because I think he
had four carries for nearly thirty yards, So that versatile,
(08:10):
versatile type player. Then they're not afraid to use him
in a variety of ways.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Correct, Yeah, yeah, that's exactly right, Paul. He he was
used the exact same way at Eastern Washington last year
too as well. So a lot of five sweeps, you know,
a lot of him motioning into the backfield and then
handing it off to him that way too as well.
Screen game is really good. They do a good job
of being able to get the ball to him on
the perimeter and then you know, getting some big bodies
(08:34):
in front of him too as well. So he definitely
will be will be a guy that we have to
do a great job of defending. On Saturday, well, I.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Tell you what it was. It was a fun day
and night at the Alis Center, and I know the
fans had a great time. They enjoyed every moment of
seeing you Indie football kind of impose its will a
little bit at times on the opponent. That makes it fun.
The challenge just ramps up. Montana expected to be part
of the national picture. They usually are, and with that venue,
as you mentioned, Washington Gris Stadium, one of the top
(09:06):
venues in FCS football or maybe all of college football.
To be perfectly honest with you, what a challenge. It
will be what a fun thing to accept and get
there and try to go win a football game. So
appreciate you dropping in with us here for a few
minutes on a Monday to get us started this week.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
Good luck this week, coach, Thanks guys, you guys have
a great week.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
All right, sounds good? Head coach Eric Schmid of North
