Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning at seven thirty five. It's a Monday morning,
and here we go into game week for you Indy
Football's We welcome to the program, Coach Eric schmid morning.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Coach, morning, guys. How's it going? Oh?
Speaker 3 (00:13):
Going great? It's game week finally here. Coach Schmidt, of
course has been part of this program and various ways
as a player, as an assistant, and we'll get to
lead as the head coach in year one, Game one
on Saturday night in Manhattan, Kansas to the Little Apple.
Great to have you on board and excited for excited
(00:35):
for a new year of you Indie football. Tim, what's
your first question for Coach Mitt?
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Well, my first question is are you do you think
you're ready? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Yeah, I know. We've we've set everything up, you know,
basically from day one when we got here, to make
sure that our guys are are ready to go come
Saturday night at six o'clock. We need every every practice,
every day, you know, we talk about it all the time.
Time is not our friends, all right, We have to
use every minute of every day and take advantage of it.
(01:07):
And we talk a lot same around here about going
one and oh and uh and win in a rep
win in a practice, you know, win in a meeting.
And I think our guys have done a great job
of just being really really consistent every day and and
uh and working with the right effort and the right
focus and the right intent. And you get to a
certain point, uh in the uh in the calendar where
(01:29):
it's time to go play a game. And we're getting
to that point. Now we gotta we got to go
and get tested and and uh. You know, I talk
a lot about Hey, practice is about performance, and the
games are for learning, Like we need to go learn
like how our guys are. And you know, when the
once the bright lights come on, like who are the
guys that you know that are built for those moments?
(01:50):
So I'm excited to uh to go watch our guys compete.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Yeah, I was gonna say that when I get out
there and I'm seen some of the practice reps, you know,
it's it seems like, uh, you know, guys will make
a mistake. If they make a mistake, they don't dwell
on it. They get right to the next direct or
next drill. And I think that's the biggest thing, because
mistakes do happen, it's just about how you handle it.
(02:14):
And that's a little bit about you know that you
ready yourself for that because a game doesn't go in
a straight line either. You want to see how you
handle those moments of of things within a game here
coming up on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
For sure. For sure, I think you know, all competition,
all life, right like, it's it's never going to be perfect,
and it's whoever whoever handles imperfect better is usually going
to be the ones who are going to be successful.
And it's important, it's important to have a failure mechanism.
You got to you got to understand that when you
do fail, you got to own it, you got to
(02:49):
flush it, and you got to move on to the
next play, whether it's a good play, you know, or
a bad play. And that's something that you know, I
think we've really tried to instill in our culture that hey,
if you're doing something and uh and you're doing it
at a uh you know, at the competitive place like here,
and obviously going into an environment like we will going
into Saturday night, like, there's gonna be you know, some
(03:12):
stress is going on. It's gonna be hard to communicate,
it's it's going to be you know, long drives and
things like that you're gonna be breathing hard here, you know,
for the first time and stuff like that, and you're
gonna have to you're gonna be able to have to
handle all those stretchers and and uh yeah, not gonna
be perfect, but yeah, like I said, you own it.
You uh you you flush it and then you move
on to the next play.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
Jim, what can we expect to see from your offense coach?
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Yeah, great question. I think, uh, you know, the one
thing that we're gonna hang our hat on here and
that we feel like, you know, the strength of our
team is the guys up front. You know, we have
all of our offensive lineman here returning. They've done a
great job I think, uh, you know throughout our entire
time being here of just setting the standard each and
every day. Tom, Like they come, they work, they push
(04:01):
each other there. We talk a lot about being player led.
They're not afraid to you know, be good teammates as
well as good friends. And what I mean by that, like,
they're guys that will you know, if you're not if
you're not doing things up to the standard, they're going
to make sure that that you're held accountable. And it's
not just the coaches doing it, it's the players doing
(04:22):
it you know too as well. And I think that's
really important if you, uh, you want to be a
successful team. So we got to do a good job
of starting there and being able to uh, being able
to control the line of scrimmage. I think that's in
any football game you're going to play. If you want
to be uh, you know, a successful football team, you
got to be able to uh to be able to
own the line of scrimmage. So it'll be important. And
(04:42):
then obviously, you know, as teams try to uh, you know,
defend us and and uh, you know, we got to
be able to make adjustments. And if they are, you know,
maybe overcompensating for one area of the game, then we
have to be dynamic enough to be able to, uh
to take advantage of some of those other opportunities. But
but uh, I like our offensive line. I think those guys,
like I said, have done a good job of you know,
(05:05):
not just because they're returning starters that that they understand that,
you know, the mindset has been a growth mindset to
go out there and improve. Yet there's nothing that you
know where guys feel comfortable or feel like they've they've arrived.
There's a number of those guys that are that are
good players that have played a lot of football, but
still need to get better, you know what I mean
too as well. And then I think our tight ends
(05:26):
have really improved here over the over the course of
the summer just with you know, our program and some
of the things that we're doing performance team wise with
nutrition and strengths, conditioning and that stuff. Some of those
guys have really you know, taken the next step as
far as in their physical development to as well. Now
they've got to prove that that they could still be
good football players, you know at their with their new
(05:48):
bodies and uh at new weights and stuff like that.
And then our running back room two is really deep,
I'd say, besides the offensive line, on our running back
room you know, uh Gavin z bar Z bar so
side out ex Xavier Leaves the name you're gonna hear
now who came in you know from the East coast
as well. It has done a good job. So so yeah,
(06:09):
I think establishing the run and then everything that comes
off of that, right, like, you got to be dynamic
enough to be able to move the ball and attack defenses.
In different ways.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
Your opponent was involved in a week zero game in Ireland,
a huge Big twelve battle just to open up the
season between Kansas State and Iowa State. I mean it
was mid season intensity. I mean it was high level
intensity right from the get go. Both teams knowing how
meaningful that was. They fell short. But what I saw
(06:39):
when I watched them, I was incredibly impressed with Kansas State.
You know, their defense flies around, makes it really tough
to run the ball against them. And then offensively, I
mean their quarterback Johnson, I mean, great athlete, throws an
incredibly catchable ball. They can run it effectively. There just
isn't a lot of little, uh little things in the
(07:01):
armor that you can pick pick apart against Kansas State.
They're a high level football team, aren't they.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
I mean they do a good job there. Their staff's
been there now for seven years, so you know who
they want to be offensively, defensively, special teams, their sound,
they're disciplined, they're not going to beat themselves. You know,
they've done a great job of recruiting talent to that
place and then being able to retain talent too as well.
So yeah, we know what we're walking into here, you know,
(07:29):
as far as personnel and uh, and what we're going
to see across the ball and like I said, man,
we're excited to go out there and got a ton
of respect for them and and you know what they
do and how successful they've been, they do it the
right way. You know, I think they do it with
integrity too as well, and and really pour into guys
and and you know, you see that, you know in
(07:50):
the success they've been they've been consistently you know, a seven, eight, nine,
ten win team here, you know, throughout the last four
or five years. So you know, definitely going to be
a tough test, but like I said before, excited to,
uh just see what our guys can go out there
and do it. And uh, you know, we've been doing
a lot of things here I think as far as
just with the culture of our program and and uh,
(08:11):
like I said before, just consistently trying to get better
and better and better every day. And we need a
game now to see where we're at and then and
then we'll learn from that and uh and move forward
from there.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Tim anything else for coach s mid today, Well, yeah,
you knew it was coming.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
Who's going to be your starting quarterback?
Speaker 2 (08:27):
No good questions, good question and uh, Garry Kamits he's
going to take the first nap on Saturday night, So
Gerry will be the guy that we'll start out with.
And then uh, you know who's to say you know
when you're going to see your answer, maybe even Simon
two as well. But but Jerry will be the guy
who who starts the game on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
You have given this show way too much credit from
the standpoint of to break news like that to us,
that's incredibly.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
That's the question at the right time.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
That's awesome. Well, I tell you what, We're gonna definitely
say like, hey, we were we remember the ones to
break the news. But I know it's been a battle
continues to be and with that bit of news, certainly
that is something fans were going to be looking to
either seeing or hearing, and they just did. So it's
(09:14):
been an incredible battle by some good young men. Then
that continues, doesn't it.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
Yeah, No, I think no matter you know, how you
you're laden or how much experience we have on offense
at some of the other positions, like your offense is
gonna you know, it's going to take on the personality
of your quarterback. And I think all three of those guys,
you know, just as far as their relationship with one another,
the competition they've had with one another. You know, they
(09:40):
walked into the room and were like, hey man, we
know it's close. You know, you've got to take one
of us. And you know, we told them that we're
going to go with Jerry to start the game. And
there's no you know, animosity or anything like that. There's
disappointment because they're competitors, but there's no jealousy. It's like, hey,
I get a coach, Like you know, we've been up
front and units with these guys from day one. This
program is going to be built out of competent psition,
(10:00):
whether that's for Jersey numbers, whether that's for you know, positions,
whether that's for you know, who's gonna eat first, or
you know what I mean, whatever, it is, like, we
want guys to earn everything they get. And uh, you know,
Jerry's body of work here since since day one has
earned him the starting job, and he's got to go
out there now and he's got to perform, just like
every other position has to go out there and play
(10:20):
well and like I said, there's uh, you know, there's
backups that other spots that will see, you know, time
throughout a game. And we think we got some talented
guys behind him, so we want to use those guys
too as well, and you know in certain formations and
packages and and personnel groups that we have, so definitely
think he'll uh, you know, you'll see some guys, you know,
different guys play in that position come Saturday night.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Well, really appreciate you dropping in this morning, Tim, what
a good question. I didn't I was like, I don't
know if we'll get that one, but you well played
Tim on the question. Indeed, indeed, you know what, We're
gonna put this feather in our cap. And I don't
know if we'll have these types of you know, hard
hitting questions every week, but we look forward to our
visits each and every time you do throughout the season.
(11:07):
At this time, we'll see you tomorrow night for a
little live visit for our in person fans at Hawk
Talk downtown Grand Forks part of our weekly visits as well,
and we appreciate your time, and let's have a great
week of prep and we'll see on the plane on Friday.
Thanks coach.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Yeah, thanks, guys, have a great day, all right, they
go Hawks.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Indeed, how about coach Schmidt letting the cat out of
the bag on this program.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
Huh well, I mean he didn't dodge the question.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Right here, certainly didn't. I would have been. I was
calf expecting, like, we're still working through it. We'll somebody
will take a snap, you know, we'll get the first
snaps on Saturday, but we're still in the process of deciding.
He actually, he actually didn't hesitate. He just basically let
(11:56):
it out, and I love it. I think that's great.
I'll just say this. Nobody's there typically ever entrusted us
to do breaking news, so the fact that he did so,
he obviously is not attuned to what.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
We do here, so hasn't figured that out.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
I was gonna say, that's usually not exactly what happens
with our program. So we appreciate him in trusting us
with the letting that one out. As I get least
we know who will be taking the snaps on the
first series for North to Gota football on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
There you go, we got it.
