Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's welcome to the program the coach of the Fighting
Hawks hockey team, Dane Jackson.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Morning, Dane, Morning, Kim.

Speaker 3 (00:09):
Good morning, coach.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:11):
Let Tim, I know you were following along from a
far I was a little bit as well, but I'll
let you lead the way because I'm sure you were
probably more attuned to it as well. So go ahead, Tim.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Wow, I'd like to ask what what was it better
Saturday night than Friday night?

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Yeah, good question. I'd say probably mostly our commitment to
kind of checking. You know, I thought we, uh, on Saturday,
we're really stout as far as our mindset to just
you know, track really hard. Excuse me, finished checks hard,
you know, keep inside body position. I just thought we
did a much better job of kind of limiting limiting

(00:53):
them offensively. You know. The one thing I saw on
Friday is is they were just chipping fox out and
really skating hard, and they were beating a ice sometimes,
so they had some you know, good looks on their
kind of entry. We weren't tracking back hard enough. We
talked a lot about that, and I thought on Saturday
we did a much better job of kind of being
on top of them and have an inside body position.

(01:13):
So if they were taken off, we were still in good,
good shape defensively, So that was a that was a
nice thing that we kind of saw that we improved
upon after talking about it from Friday to Saturday.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Yeah, it's interesting, isn't it. On the road? I know
how it is when you lose on Friday, the how
you really put the nose to the grindstone for Saturday
and get it done.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Huh Yeah, obviously you want to try to sweep on
the road. It's always hard to sweep on the road,
you know. I give them credit. I thought Clarkson was
they had a big, heavy, hard team and uh, you
know they checked well. So yeah, it was it was
a good response. You know, obviously we're a growing team.
You know, we like our group, but you know, there's

(01:59):
a mature that has to come as far as kind
of the mindset of of game, the game, playing extremely
hard every every game, not waiting for that, uh, you know,
exterior motivation from a loss to be at your best.
So it was good to see that everybody kind of
bought in. It was a really really hard two way
game we played. I thought we you know, obviously we

(02:20):
only scored the one goal, but I thought we created
actually quite a few good chances to score more. So yeah, overall,
good good response for sure defensively, and we're gonna work
on a lot of execution and shooting bucks in the
net here in practice and and try to get that
offensive side going more.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
Obviously, you were confident in your goaltender coming into Saturday
and idea on Spooner because I mean, otherwise you don't
put them in right.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
Yeah, you know, we had a good discussion with our
staff and uh, you know, Gabe Homer has played well
for us, but yeah, we just thought Johan is kind
of started to build a trust and confidence with his
teammates and coaches with always put together practice time and uh,
you know, it's great to see him go in. You know,
it's kind of the desired response that you're hoping from

(03:08):
your group when you put in uh, a guy hasn't played,
you know, in college before, and the fact that the
boys that really kind of up their effort defensively, I
think to try to you know, obviously play well, but
also there's that extra heightened response when you when you
see yan and there for his first game, you want
to really you know, help let a guy ease into
his transition a little bit. So that was nice to
see that you playing till well. But the guys really

(03:31):
I think, I thought, responded in.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
Front of him, Well, you've got one of the hottest
teams in the country coming in this weekend in Minnesota Duluth.
There's seven and one in the air. What do you
see from the Bulldogs?

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Yeah, they're playing well. Yeah, they're checking hard, They're they're
tenacious defensively, they haven't given up a whole lot. Their
goaltending has been good, and obviously their power play is
really good. Their top line of the plan boys and
shot could be even good. So excuse me, Yeah, they're
just obviously Scott Tamlin does a great job. They're well

(04:07):
coached and and uh and and sharpen their defensive structure.
But they're they're creating quite a bit too, and I
get some good looks uh offensively quite a bit on
their transition, I think. So, yeah, we'll be prepared and
ready to go. We're excited for the challenge. You're ready
to battle against those guys. It's always uh uh, you know,
a good match. When we played the Louse.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
You got to start the NC season.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Right Yep, that's that's important. You know. Obviously, Uh, all
these games are a battle. There's no easy space out there.
You gotta you gotta fight for every inch and and
work to get to the net and advance you know,
advanced pucks when that's all there is in front of you.
You know, it's really important to manage that pocket. You
turn over pucks against teams that are good transition teams,

(04:52):
they come right back at you. So all those little
things that kind of prepare us at the end of
the year, you know, are we're so proud of our
NCC record at the at the end of the year,
we've we've baired in the National Tournament and National champions
So I think it just all starts with kind of
the day to day grind of our our twenty four
games in the NCH team.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
Yeah, you've got to make the simple plays right when
nothing else is there.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Yeah, and that's kind of always the balance. You know, it's, uh,
you want to be creative and you want to create offense,
but you know it's kind of had a risk reward
on the you know, when you're entering the zone quite
often about what are the what what what plays are
you willing to make. Is this a chance where you
have a bit of a gap and you can you
can skate or pass latterly and get some creativity in
your game, or is is does the D have a

(05:39):
great gap on you and is a heavy back pressure?
We got to try to make a skilled chip and
and and put it behind the D and then go,
you know, go play a little bit of just offensive
zone and kind of in the in the half court there.
So yeah, it's it's always a balance something we talk
a lot about with our guys. You know, we don't
want to take away their creativity or playmaking, but we
you know, we want to kind of take what the

(06:00):
game gives us. As a phrase that we often used.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
Him and you've got a chance to play some young
guys on the weekend and you like what you see.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
Yeah, we were just talking in the coaches room before
practice today about you know, the competition we have. You know,
we think actually both We talked a lot about forwards
originally about you know, getting some different guys in there. Obviously,
we we had a line of Menghii and Klee and
Young that played really well as a whatever so called

(06:32):
fourth line, but we started them in the game because
they are kind of thought way, they have a mentality
to them. But yeah, a lot of guys have gone
in and played well, you know, like Kate Littler has
played well and he ended up sitting you know, one game.
You know, it's just we kind of talked about just
saying hey, like, doesn't mean we don't like it doesn't
mean you're not a good player just because you because

(06:53):
you get scratched for a night. It's just kind of
that mindset of saying, hey, we have a lot of competition.
We have a lot of guys that we think are
are very close and you know, we're just trying to
create that healthy competition where guys are are badling every
day in practice to try to earn their next shift.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
It's like we've talked about how do you keep them
all happy? Right?

Speaker 2 (07:15):
Well, and that's that's a great question. I think it
all starts with kind of our recruiting. It's like when
we when we find guys to come to North Dakota,
we want guys that are character guys and leaders and
you don't have to be happy, but we say, hey,
you got to come to work and you got to
have a stiff upper lip, and you got to be
ready to compete. You know, I don't need to be

(07:35):
buddies with the guys that don't. They don't need to
be all happy they but they you know, you can't
be you can't be negative, and you can't be pouting,
you know. So just it's just that that fine line
of you know, trying to say, hey, I'm still gonna
you know, be a positive. I'm gonna come, I'm gonna work,
I'm gonna I'm gonna try to show the coaches that
and everything I do about, you know, how I work out,

(07:56):
how I practice, how I handle myself around the rink,
and want to get my next opportunity. I'm ready to go.
And as we all know, there's gonna be injuries and
there's going to be different things that happen, and guys
are going to get in so, you know, you try
to talk to the guys about the totality of the
season and say, hey, we think you're gonna have a
couple of nights when you're a few nights when you're
in the stands. But overall with uh, with injuries and

(08:17):
everything else that goes on, guys leaving to go playing
World Juniors, or you know, different stuff. The thickness they're
gonnay're going to get in there. So just kind of
just make sure that you're playing your best team. You
can't control you know, who we put in. You can't
control what other guys are doing. You can only control
your your effort and practice and when you get a
chance of the game, what you do.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
All right, Uh, timmy, have anything left for coach today?

Speaker 1 (08:41):
No, that's good right now?

Speaker 3 (08:42):
Yeah, coach, will you or will will you be sending
one of your assistants out to join us tonight?

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Yeah, I'll be there. Awesome, excited to be there. Uh
he goes with you guys, Let's be fun night and
always enjoy coming.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
Yeah, that that's great. We really appreciate it. I know
the fans out there have really appreciated you coming out
as well. We have a good contingent of regular fans
that have really enjoyed that so far. So appreciate that.
We'll see out there later tonight at about six fifteen,
six twenty when we get to you.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
Thanks coach, Okay, thanks man, appreciate your time.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
All right, there we go. It's Dan Jackson, head hockey
coach here at the University of North Dakota,
