Speaker 1 (00:00):
Coming up on seven thirty five on your Tuesday morning,
November eleventh, and on Tuesdays at this time, we visit
with the head coach of Northdakota Hockey, Dane Jackson joining
the program and good morning coach. Will we welcome you
aboard here after a nice road weekend for your Northdakota
Hockey team.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Congratulations on that one.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Yeah, thanks having me on this morning, man, I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Yeah. Tim's had an appointment today. He'll be back on
with us tomorrow and ready for the weekend. But I
so he gives me solo questions for you basically. But
you know, when you split the duties this weekend for
the goaltenders, and really both goaltenders made the necessary saves,
you know. Was it a combination of goaltenders doing the

(00:43):
job and being really solid in what they do, but
also just your team as a whole playing well and
limiting the types of chances that you want to see
limited through the defensive play through your forwards and your
defensemen that allowed your goaltenders to play well. Was it
a combination between those two.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
I think it's a bit of a combination, you know.
Obviously I thought our goaltenders did play well. They were
you know, strong, There was no soft goals at all
on the weekend. Probably you know, give you Homer probably
had the tougher of the task. Who weren't you know,
Omaha really raised their level on Saturday, and we're checking
extremely hard, so he was looking through traffic a little

(01:22):
bit there on Saturday. But I guess the positive was there.
We didn't give up any kind of not any I
think we give up too many high danger chances where
they had great rush chances that out numbered or they
had kind of slotline kind of lateral plays for one timers.
So that was the positive that we I think defensively
we limited some of those. And then when the guys

(01:43):
were challenged, they did an outstanding job. They were sharp
and ready and pretty good rebound control and all those things.
So I think I think it was a combination of
the of the boat ball.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
Yeah, when the you know, the thing about it is
too is that you talked about it and touched on
it right away. There is that you go back to
the hotel. There's probably some food there. The guys need
to get some nutrition in them before they turn in.
After a win on a Friday, night, and probably the
reminder is either leaving the locker room or even before
they head up, is that hey, expect a pretty good

(02:13):
pushback from the opponent, because that's the league you play in.
If you take game one, you expect a push, don't
you from the opponent. And you certainly saw that in
Saturday's game.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Yeah, for sure. I didn't think. We talked a lot
about it being really prepared and really kind of hungry
and focused and determined. You know. I think our guys
were working. I just didn't think our execution was quite
as good Saturday. They were checking really hard on their
fore check and in the neutral zone, and we weren't
quite as clean with our you know, passing and kind

(02:45):
of our puck management choices. So the first period I
did not think was great for us. Give me really tall,
But then as the game went on, I thought we
played better and better and started kind of you know,
moving tucks crisply and kind of advanced pucks when we
had to. So overall happy with the way the boys responded.
They get a h it's never easy to get in

(03:06):
the road.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Sweep, no, no doubt him, and then you have that
long road home in the middle of the night basically
to get home, but at least you're doing it with
a smile on your face.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
And the players too. You know.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
A great article by Brad Schlassman here in regards to
the even though he's young, the two way player that
kle Reeshni has arrived as and continues to be early
in his career. And you can talk to that a
little bit as far as having that attitude, because that's
a lot of you know, a lot of guys want
to float around a little bit, and he has come

(03:39):
in and not deviated of wanting to be a two
way player.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
There.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
That's an attitude a little bit, don't you think.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
Yeah, some of it's mentality, some of it is, uh
I guess yeah, how you how was in your DNA
to play the game, and obviously our DNA is to
try to really have, you know, strong two way players.
We know, we know to win in our league you
have to have that, and we know that if you
want to try to go on and play in the
National Hockey League, you have to have that. And uh cool,

(04:08):
that's part of the reason why he's, you know, a
first rounder. You know, he has a lot of habits
and details that lead to strong possession and playing good hockey.
You know, obviously he's got some special ability, his his vision,
his kind of uh you know, stickhandling, ability to manipulate
guys on entry. It's special. But you know, we got

(04:31):
him out there for big draws and the defensive zone,
we got him penalty killing. So when you when you
kind of build your team with with players that have,
you know, a strong two way game but also have
like you said, kind of a care and uh and
a player to play well defensively, that's a huge place
to start. So it's great for our team, and I
think it's going to allow Cool to be a really

(04:53):
good hockey player as a pro as well. Well.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Let let's let's conversely talk about Will Will Zellers, who
is you know, learning on the fly as well? And
you know where where do you think, because obviously he's
already found points for you. Where where's Will tracking his game?
What kind of player does Will desire to be? And
what is already he's shown flashing? Where where is he
growing in his game so far? Because it seems like

(05:17):
there's another youngster that's continuing to grow within his role
within your lineup.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
That's a great question. You know, I would say Will
Zeller's coming in was not really thought of as kind
of in that same vein as having a strong a
two way game as like we just talked about with
with Cole. You know, he's got special ability to score,
you know, really good offensive instincts. Was always known as
big as a competitor and a guy that you know
hunts pucks and really you know, works hard offensively. I

(05:47):
got to tell you, I've been really happy with his
commitment to check and play hard defensively. I don't think
it's naturally as much as in Will's DNA, but I know,
coming in we've talked a lot about it, and I
know he's been taking pride in the small little things
as far as when he has to chip a puck
in or out, or when he when he's going to
finish checks, or to block shots, or to play hard defensively.

(06:10):
I know he's made it a point to to try
to you know, really work at that part of his game.
And it's been noticed by both his teammates and his staff.
So we're really excited about Will on that side. You know,
his offensive side, he's gifted. You know, he competes, he
competes to get to the net, he fights to get
positioned and fights to win puck, and he's got some

(06:31):
special ability to to just score and make make plays.
So that part we knew. What I've been so impressed
with is his kind of desire to try to, you know,
grow his defensive game.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
That's awesome.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
Arizona State the sun Devils, coming in out of the Desert.
I think they were in a pretty good series with
Colorado College over the weekend in which I think they
tied one night, but won in a shootout and and
got some points that way, and then fell in a
tight contested game against the Tigers in the in the
next outing. So the sun Devils here, you know, certainly,

(07:05):
just like everything in the ncc H, a team that
expects to be well and be in the fray here
as the season progresses.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Your opponent this weekend coming.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
Into the ralph another high level team that you're going
to be facing.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
Yeah, I thought they were one of the best teams
we played last year. I was really interested with their game.
I know they they've had a bit of a tough start,
but we know they have good players. We know they're
well coached and competitive there'll be no just because maybe
they haven't had the best start. There'll be no let
up on our group. We know that they're they could score,
they they have they have good structures, So yeah, it'll

(07:42):
be a good challenge. We're we're excited for and I'm
kind of again just kind of really watching with our
group and trying to you know, we're focusing on it
and talking about it a lot, but really trying to
see if we can take some of these steps maturing
as a group. But you know, we got a lot
of new guys, but it's like, hey, it's we're kind
of seeing, Hey, it's time to we know o're systems now,
we know what it takes. Like let's kind of see

(08:03):
that progression of you know, week to week of us
just continue to show up and compete hard and have
good structure to our game, none of this kind of
up and down, you know as we go feeling too
good about ourselves after a couple of wins. So we're
going to be talking about that a lot and pressing
upon that idea that we're resetting, we're refocused and we're

(08:23):
we didn't have some great practice this week and be
prepared for a su Yeah, it's.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
Going to be a great weekend ahead at Ralph Engelstead
Arena with the Arizona State coming to town and as
you mentioned, a program that was incredibly solid and as
you mentioned, maybe a couple of tough ones this year,
but I think they have designs on being a good
hockey team as well, no doubt about it, and that
should be a great matchup this weekend. When I look
at your team here as you continue to evolve, and

(08:51):
you talk about basically the look right now at this
time of year is within and right now, injury wise,
you've had to navigate a significant injury to a youngster
that really came out of the gates playing very well unfortunately,
you know. But how are you doing health wise otherwise
heading into this pivotal series against the Sun Devils.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
Yeah, overall pretty good. You know, it was a fiscal
series and you and know, we got a few guys
that are you know, nicked up. We had kind of
a lighter day yesterday where we did some skills practice
with the guys that were healthy and some guys took
the extra day, but we'll get back at it today.
I think we're overall relatively healthy and we'll see how
we get through the when it gets through the Friday,

(09:36):
but I think we're in pretty good shape there. We
could have a guy or two out, but we'll see
how that goes. But overall we're even pretty fortunate.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Well knock on wood, we'll try to remain fortunate. Thanks
so much for joining us.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Will you be sending someone out or making your way
out here tonight over to HOWK Talk.

Speaker 3 (09:52):
You know Brince Chisaka is going to show up. You're
gonna be able to quiz him on all of our
future recruits and his plan. So he's gonna today.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
Oh boy, we're getting the guy that he's running the
show there shifting the pieces in the background.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
I love it. That sounds great. Thanks for that.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
Well, we appreciate you dialing us up this morning and
visiting with us a little bit about the past weekend
with the sweep against the Mavericks, and we wish you
all the best here in your prep here for this
weekend Friday and Saturday night at what will be a
loud and boisterous Ralph Engelstead Arena. Thanks for this, coach,
and have a great week.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
Okay, thanks Paul, appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
All right, there's head coach Dane Jackson joining us here
north to go to hockey, getting set and ready for
Arizona State, coming off a solid weekend on the road
to seven to two win Friday for one Saturday against
the Mavericks. And really appreciate Dane Jackson on what you know,
it's a busy time of year, and as you mentioned,
you know, he touched on Arizona State a little bit,

(10:50):
but by and large they're still insular. They're really looking
singularly focused on what they're doing and how they go
about doing what they do, and that's going to be
the case probably for a large portion of this early
point of the season as they get into NCCHC play,
and obviously that seemed to be a pretty good way
to go about it against Omaha over the weekend. So

(11:10):
appreciate Dane Jackson for joining us as he does on
Tuesdays at about seven thirty five

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
