Speaker 1 (00:00):
We welcome to the program. Go to Dane Jackson you
Indie Hockey Morning, Dane. Thanks for being with us.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Yeah, good morning man, happy to be here.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
No problem getting in today.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Eh oh, I was in early beat the Rush.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
So yeah, we're we're here. We're in to have a
good practice.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Even though you and D's closed, our guys are gonna
power through.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Well, here we go another NHC weekend with Omaha, who
you know, frankly kind of had your way with them
when you were in Omaha. It's kind of a kind
of a rivalry that's been brewing, don't you think.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yeah, well we we ended up getting two down there,
but I know on the second night they were they
played really hard and really well and that was a
hard fought game. So yeah, it's not that long from
playing them earlier in their barn. But they're a good
team and we'll be ready for him.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
You know, we we we've been in a.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Lot of close games we've won, which is nice, but
you know, you still kind of I just want to
try to keep building and keep you know, growing your
habits in details so you can you can make those
wins more clear cut.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Yeah, it's not often in fact, I think it was
twenty eighteen last time you swept a couple from Saint
claud State. That's not easy. You guys played well, Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Yeah, we played. We had a good to kind of
bend but not break mentality. I thought all all weekend
it was. It was a close games both nights. Chances
were back and forth. You know, we did a good
job of just kind of I think, kind of staying
mentally tough and staying engaged and then not making too
many big mistakes and then capitalizing when.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
We got chances.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
So it was it was a close series, you know,
both games that could have gone either way, but we
had strong goaltending and played pretty hard. I thought Saturday
we could have done a better job disciplined wise, and
you know we left them kind of build momentum on
the second half of the game with the penalties we took.
But you know, it was a good, good job by
mass maybe pKa unit to not only kill them off

(02:06):
but also score Shorty, which was huge day.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Let's talk a little bit about the personnel situation going
in as the news comes out. The US team now
has invited Will Seller to their camp, which I think
is warranted and you've got two guys and a recruit
invited to the Canadian team. You're gonna end up guys
to play this weekend.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Fortunately, our US guys they do not leave before the weekend,
so we'll have both ejmm Emery and Will Zellers on
our roster this weekend.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
But you know the Canadian guys, they take them early.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
They take them I think on on Thursday, so Rashni
and Beerhauf will be.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Gone, but yeah, we'll have.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
We'll have enough to fill the full team, and we'll
be worried about the guys that we got in the
lineup and not the guys that are out, So yeah,
it'll be it's always challenging, but we're happy for those guys.
Whenever we guys that go to World Juniors, you know
your your set GM goal, but you always get a
better player back because they go through great experiences and
playing high level hockey at the World Juniors.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
We could go ahead, I was just gonna say really quick,
going back to the Saint Cloud State. Obviously, you guys
have an Olympic sized sheet you can work on and
just from watching and listening over the weekend to those
games and you talk so frequently about advancing pucks and
on the NHL sheet, you know, advancing pucks you got

(03:35):
to make decisions really really quick on an NHL sheet.
Was that a point of emphasis about, you know, do
you take an extra look before you advance when you
collect in your own zone? I mean, you know, it
seemed like you did a pretty good job of advancing
pucks in that situation, even though it's a different type
of you know, area that you're dealing with against Saint Cloud.

(03:57):
Was that a point of emphasis, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
For sure, Paul and and you make a good point.
Sometimes on the one, the guys you have a little
bit more time, so you know, maybe you do have
the time to make a little slip play or you know,
we want to make direct plays whenever we can, but
sometimes when they when the game is really fast, you know,
in a smaller rink, you you have to just kind
of chip pucks ahead. I thought we had a pretty

(04:21):
good balance overall of kind of managing the puck and
making plays when we had time and space, but also
just putting pucks ahead.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
And skating onto it when we when we did not.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
You know, I thought in the second period on Saturday,
we got away from it a little bit and they
kind of took got some chances from it, but we
kind of addressed it as a group and overall our
team has been pretty responsible, uh, on our puck play
about when we're when we're trying things and when we're
going to just live for another day.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
Yeah go ahead, I'm sorry.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
Yeah yeah, you might have that that half a second,
but then they had that half a second, and you've
got to try to take that.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Away, right, Yeah, so you know when you're checking obviously,
you know, we talked a lot about in that big
rink of saying, hey, the most important thing is kind
of inside the dots and in front of our net.
So if we want to just kind of get organized
a little bit more when we're defending and then work
work the clothes on guys under control, that's better than

(05:15):
rushing outside the dots and letting them make plays back to.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
The critical area.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
So it's always always a balance, whether it's with your
puck management or how you're defending on that big rank
about you know, how you want to play it.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Dah. Back to the personnel thing, it's a double hed sword,
isn't it, Because you you're really happy for those guys
that get an opportunity to represent their country, but it
also takes away from your team.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Right, Yeah, but we we know that when we sign
these guys up, you know we have we have other
good players. So yeah, you're you're happy for the guys
and we've got it. We've done a good job you
know of you know, having good depth.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
So you know, with.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
Rashne goes out, you know, hopefully Rick what's going to
be healthy and well have a chance for him to
come back. And you know, when Bearhoff goes out, we
know that the chance Cubanville will be back. So you know,
you got you get good players that can come in
and do the job and get an opportunity and and
you just want to make sure that those guys are
prepared and ready.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
For the challenge.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Well it's uh and I've said it forty five years, Dane,
and the players you get back from that tournament are
usually better than the players that left, don't you think?

Speaker 3 (06:33):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (06:33):
Yeah, they you know, when you're proud of those guys
when they go and and do well there and showcase
themselves and for sure they go through those experience and
it's a it's a it's a hot fire there, they
jump into there, so when they come back, they're kind
of ready for our big games down the stretch. So yeah,
we're pumped for those guys, their elite players. You know,
it helps us recruit the next elite players because guys

(06:55):
are you know, coming to our program and developing and
getting those opportunities. So, you know, it's pretty exciting when
you look back over all the years of you and
d hockey and to consider that there's a chance that
we have, you know, could have possibly six guys.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
That are playing in the World Juniors. That's amazing.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
Really quick we talked about the World Junior piece. What
is the Spangler Cup obligations for like a livnaviage what
what when is that and when does that come into play?

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Yep, yeah, good question. That tournament is over on December
thirty first, so and that's if you play in the finals.
So yeah, we feel strongly that we'll have Weave and
livin Ovis back for our series versus Mercy Hurst.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
Perfect.

Speaker 1 (07:42):
Speaking of what is your injury situation with Rick Wood
and others.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
Yeah, we think there's a pretty good chance that Rick
would could be back this weekend.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
As well as Jubnville.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
So that would be timely with our guys, with us
losing a couple of guys, that'd be really nice to
get those those guys back in the mix. And I
think they're trending the right way.

Speaker 4 (08:02):
Well, I'll just say this as we wrap things up
with you, coach, and we appreciate you dropping in before practice,
appreciate you joining us this morning, and we look forward
to our visits and good luck this weekend.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
All right, sounds good man. I appreciate you having me on.

Speaker 4 (08:16):
All right sounds good head coach Dan Jackson, North Dakota

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
