Speaker 1 (00:00):
Tampa Bay's rock station ninety aid Rock and joining us
on the phone line here on Crashing AJ Phones, we've
gotten none other than Jerry from Papa Roach.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
How you doing, man, what's up?
Speaker 1 (00:11):
Such a pleasure talking to you today, which, by the way,
congratulations on one hell of a tour announcement. We're so
excited Papa Roach Rise Against an under Oath coming to
the Mid Florida Credit Union Amphitheater on October fourth. How exciting.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
I'm so stoked, Like you know, we've been working on
this for a while, you know, and both rights against
an under Oath. We've been trying to put something together
for seems like years, but you know, schedules don't always
match up, and we just I don't know, stars aligned
for this, and we're so stoked.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
That's great when you when you've been waiting so long
for something like this, especially when it comes to music
bringing people together, some bands and friends, I guess they
all want to work together. It comes together and you
land right in Tampa. That's amazing.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Right, We're glad to have it right, which it's gonna be.
I mean, the Tampa crowd is always incredible, like they
you know, they're one of the top. So it's it's
gonna be wild, I can tell you that.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
So this tour is especially exciting because it's the rise
of the roach in which you guys got quite the number.
You're going to be celebrating this this upcoming year twenty five.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Yeah, yeah, you know, we're I don't like sometimes I
don't like thinking about it because that means I've been
in the band for that long. But no, I mean,
it's it's pretty pretty incredible, Like it's a it's a
milestone that I think that our younger selves would definitely
(01:44):
have been been happy to know that we reached you
know what I mean.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
You know, I actually got an opportunity to interview you
guys right when all this was going right outside the
House of Blues in Orlando many years ago. And I
just remember how, you know, you talk about some you
guys were actually green back then, you know, just jumping
(02:10):
on the scene. And to see right now because I'm
looking at pictures that you right now and listening going
now look at you guys now, look at you then,
and and and the the trend of trending up that
you've taken talk about the talk about this this roller
coaster ride, this awesome roller coaster ride that had brought
you to twenty five years. What is the highlights? Is
there a highlight that you can think of? There's probably
(02:32):
many highlights, but the first thing that comes to mind
over twenty five years for you guys, yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
I mean yeah, like you said, there were many highlights
for sure. I mean, en roller coaster is definitely the
right word for it. We've gone through ups and downs.
You know, there was like after our second record, there
was the when downloading started to become a thing, the
industry got crazy, and you know, we were like on
(03:03):
the edge of breaking up and didn't know if we
would have a career and all that, and then you know,
we we just put our HUDs down and and wrote,
and you know, we came with Getting Away with Murder
and Scars and those you know obviously did super well.
(03:23):
But even during that whole thing, like we were facing
like opposition from the label and you know a lot
of this stuff people don't even know, but there's just
been things like that where we've had super strong headwinds
and you know, when we when we feel something, we
stick to our guns. And Getting with Murderous Scars, you know,
(03:49):
amazing success, you know, and then we had, you know,
we had a couple of dry periods here and there.
But I think really it just comes down to our
governness and unwillingness just to give to stop, to give up.
Speaker 4 (04:07):
You know.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
I think about Papa Roach, I think about longevity, and
you know, that's a word that you know, you want
to be able to associate yourself with in any business,
but especially in rock music.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Ain't that the truth? Which you know? And that's in
Fest celebrating its twenty fifth anniversary. Rise Against also is
going to be celebrating twenty five years as well, which
is really cool. And speaking of longevity, on of Tampa Zone,
Bert Kreischer, which congratulations. That was one hell of a
parody video that he did announcing the tour, and that
in case you guys missed it, he dropped a video
(04:39):
letting fans know that he's going to be on the
road with Poppa Roach. Spoiler he's not. But I mean,
is there a chance we maybe could see it happening
on some of these shows?
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Man, I can't say anything, but no, I don't know.
If we could make it happen, that would be awesome.
I know he's a really busy guy. But we got
to connect on his podcast just recently, and and even
before that, he was actually in Australia at the same
time we were, so he came out to a show
(05:10):
and you know, we hung out and what a what
a great dude, And yeah he did. He killed it
on that video. This is so awesome.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
But make it happen with a paper road shirt on though, Okay,
will you?
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Okay, I'm gonna have to take it off.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
He's a saint.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
He's a Saint Pete Tampa guy. So I mean, dial
the phone, say you're coming here. I'm sure he'd love
to show up. So a couple of questions that I
got for you. First off, the Family Feud episode against Dawtry.
I watched it. I loved it. I've always wanted to
be on that show. Can you maybe give us a
little bit of maybe behind the scenes how that kind
(05:50):
of happens when you're on stage, Like how exhilarating is that.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
I'm gonna tell you what. It was, nerve wrecking as
like all get out. You know, Like my wife before
we were doing it. At first, she kind of said, well,
you know, family Feud, that's kind of that's kind of lame.
But then, like you know, everybody else reacted to it,
and she's like, okay, well maybe it'll be cool. She go, Okay,
you got to start watching episodes so that you're ready
(06:18):
for it. But yeah, exactly, uh, and I'm you know,
I'm like, okay, I'll do that. You know, it's like
when you get up there, everything that you thought about
or did or whatever just goes right out the window.
And you know, we you know, we had five spots,
(06:40):
so four guys in the band, and and we we
actually called up Dave, our old drummer, and he's actually
the one that saved us. So you know, we we
were like bad news bears on that you know, that episode,
until Dave came in and turned it around because we
(07:02):
were just like, we give the right answer for the
face off. Then we get going and then you know,
three strikes and every time, every single time, we're just like,
oh my god, how can we do this horrible And
then like you know, Dave came to Clutch and you know,
it was an awesome time. Steve was great, and you know,
(07:25):
we we got to raise some money for a fsp
and and it was it was a blast.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
Nice.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Now.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
One of my favorite questions to ask anybody that we
get to interview is I love to hear about their
first ever performance. You know, the first time you picked
up a guitar and you strummed it and you're like,
this is what I'm gonna do forever, this is what
I'm gonna do with my life. Is there a certain
moment that sticks out in your head or like, you know,
maybe a first performance or something you can speak on
right there.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
Well, it wasn't our first performance where I thought I'm
going to do this the rest of my life. You
know that that was like it was in a backyard
and we were just really having fun. But I think
when we when we played at the like our local
community center, I think it held like five six hundred
people and we got to feel the energy of the
(08:15):
crowd and uh and really that many people like super
stoked to see us play. We're just like, oh yeah,
we can really because back then it was like the
world was kind of small and we didn't really know,
like you know, because you know, the the gatekeepers of
(08:36):
everything you had, you had a like a set of
gates for every next step, and they didn't let you
in until they thought you were ready, and you know
we we obviously back then we weren't even ready, but uh,
we didn't even realize that it was possible until like
(08:58):
we started hitting those gates. And once once we got
that energy and kind of developed a local following, then
we thought, okay, we could do this.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
So now with that, you know, we do this thing
on the show. It's called the Daily Nugget, Words of
Wisdom ponderables. Sometimes it's a dumb ass quote that you
see on social media. Is there anything you keep telling yourself,
you know, anything that you utilize to help you get
through the day or moments like that you could share
with others?
Speaker 2 (09:33):
Oh Man, Well, for me, like personally, this at anytime,
like we have to do handle business or that kind
of stuff. I always think of David Bowie where he
said that he had to become a better businessman to
(09:53):
become a better artist. And it didn't really like when
I first heard it, I you know, we were still
green like Chriss you were talking about, and I didn't
get it. And then you know, as we got further
in our career where we made mistakes or you know,
somebody kind of cheated us out of money, or whatever
(10:16):
that really like hit home. And so it kind of
every time we come up against a certain thing and
that's that's something that I think of and it's helped
us out.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
You know. Yeah, that's so I mean that that kind
of goes uh. You know, that could apply to a
lot of different artists, not just music artists, but you know,
our people with mindset, money mindset take advantage of people
with creative mindset all the time. So if you have
that business mindset, it can really help you out and
for your career and expose you know, get your your
(10:49):
reach out there too.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
You know for sure.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
So you know, I just remember I'm just kind of
recalling now when I when I interviewed you guys that
you know that a long time ago at the House
Blues outside of Orlando, and you know, back then you
guys were just getting just getting started. What's something a
parallel that you've used. The biggest thing you've learned since
I believe that was nineteen ninety seven if I'm not
(11:13):
or nineteen ninety seven, nineteen ninety eight or something like that,
and between now and then, what is the biggest thing
you guys have learned as far as you know, as
a group that you could pass on to another band
that's trying to make it.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
I would say, you know, I think part of a
big part of our longevity is that not only like
do we have a passion for it, right we and
we love playing shows, but being respectful of each other. Yeah,
and you know, being being willing to compromise. Compromise necessary obviously,
(11:57):
you know, nobody likes to compromise. It's just something that
you have to do sometimes. But it can mean the
difference between still being a van and breaking up.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
And if you have something great, then you know, pulling
back a little bit I think is something that is necessary.
If we like to say that we get to a
point where everybody is equally unhappy, yeah, then everybody's happy.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
Yeah, yeah, that makes sense.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Hell, we wake up in the morning. I'll wake up
in the morning together. That could be That could be
saying to be said about a morning show. It could
be a football team setting right there. But we're super
excited to have you man, I mean, this is a
big announcement around here.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
Yeah, we're looking forward to the show. Of course, tickets
getting ready to go officially on sale, and we got
pre sales happening now. But I got of the question here.
This is something that we've been talking about recently. Jerry,
What's something you've seen a lot, but you're still in
awe every time?
Speaker 2 (13:03):
Uh? Something we've seen a lot. I mean really, when
I see people crowdsurfing at our shows, yeah, I'm like, okay,
they got to be younger than like twenty five, you
know what I mean, Like, there's no way somebody in
my age is doing that. I know I'm not doing it.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
I'm double nickels. I've always said to myself, Man, I
wish I could do that at least one time, you know,
I wish somebody could could pass the two hundred and
twenty to two hundred pound guy across the crowd at
least one time.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
Yeah. I mean you could try it. If they drop you,
then it's not working out so much.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
Check my insurance there.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
You're Jerry Horton from Papa Roach and of course the
big announcement. They're coming here with two other bands here
that everyone loves. We're talking about.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Rise Again and want to Tampa Zone under Oath October
fourth over at the Ants. Yeah, So I gotta know
what's that one song you look forward to performing on
stage every single time.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Well, besides the last Resort, I love playing there. This
song off the first record between Angels and Insect because
it's got because it's got the guitar intro. Usually whenever
I start playing it, you know, people just start cheering
(14:32):
just from the guitar intro and that's pretty fun. Hell yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
And then then that's when the crowdsurfing begins.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
There you go, right, So, Jarry, you gonna be doing
the five k run with Jacobe before the shows too?
Are you on on board with the five k run
before the shows or is that that's just him?
Speaker 2 (14:51):
I hate cardiot brother preach.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
No.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
I mean I I do workouts on tour, but it's
not running. That's not my thing. Yeah, So I do
like weights and stuff like that just to get it,
you know, get my uh my bones loaded up and
all that kind of stuff.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
So, yeah, we noticed that a lot of you and
your associates around and the rock from business have I've
started gravitating towards really turning this music thing into You
guys are basically athletes out there now, you know, performing
and doing these schedules, you have to be a high
level of fitness to do it, and we got to
(15:35):
take our hats off to you for that longevity. You
gotta be physically fitting. Congratulations, you guys have done it
so far.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
Man, Thank you. We're going for you know, Mick Jagger's
like the standards, you know, He's like trains all the time.
You got to stay ready.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (15:52):
Now speaking about that, get.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Ready, you got to stay ready.
Speaker 4 (15:55):
Ye. Speaking about that, Jerry just got me thinking. Has
there ever been a moment where you were on stage
and You're just like, oh my god, how am I
going to get through the next twenty thirty minutes of this?
I am out of gas, I'm out of breath.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
How do you get through that?
Speaker 2 (16:10):
It's funny you mentioned that because there was a show
we did in South America and it was in I
think it was Olivia, and Bolivia is fourteen thousand feet
altitude O yeah, yeah, and we're like, oh. I was
just like and I don't ever just stand there and
(16:34):
I was like, I'm gonna have to chill for a
little while because it was crazy like the difference.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
Yeah, that's interesting.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
That was one. Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
Get one of the roadies the wheel you around in
a wheelchair, right, we'd be happy to know that. Whereas,
as you know, we're below sea level a lot around here,
so no need to worry about high altitude right.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
We are humid aps, so be prepared for the swamp ass.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
And a whole lot of it.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Which I got to know, Jerry, if you were to
put if you were to put together a list a
Mount Rushmore of guitarists who would be on that Mount
Rushmore of yours?
Speaker 2 (17:14):
Okay, Jimmy Page okay, Jimmy Hendricks, D Gilmore Okay. And
to Billy give I love it. That's a good one.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
I'm paying money for that one.
Speaker 3 (17:35):
That's great, man.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
You know, Billy Gibbons was Jimmy Hendricks's favorite guitar player.
Speaker 1 (17:41):
What no kidding, I had no idea.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
There you go a little trivia time.
Speaker 2 (17:48):
And Billy Gibbons is the car guy, so that's like
and I'm a huge car guy. So Ma'm there.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
That is a very good Mount Rushmore and a great
conversation with you. We can wait too, you know what
we want to definitely give you. We'll get back there,
hopefully get an intro of you guys and give you
a high five man, great fantastic job. Twenty five years
of infested and that's just a what a way to
celebrate here in Tampa Bay. We cannot wait for you.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
Yeah, thank you guys, and I hope to see you
at the show.
Speaker 1 (18:18):
Definitely, we'll see you there. Thank you for your time.
Once again, Jerry from Papa Roach. Of course, that show
going down October fourth at the AMP popa Roach Rise
against an under Oath with ninety eight Rock
