Speaker 1 (00:00):
Friday.
Speaker 2 (00:00):
I'm always thinking about fun things and thinking about the
cool things to go do, and one thing that's really
cool that you're going to be able to do on
Saturday tomorrow at Werner Park, Union Omaha, the Owls trying
to work their way into the playoff mix in USL
League one going to be hosting Mutual o'ha's Wild Kingdom Night.
Joining us to talk about it is the guy who
(00:21):
runs the show with Union Omaha and the Omaha Storm Chasers,
Marty Cordero. Marty, great to hatting with you man. What's
going on?
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Hey, Emery, good to Chad. It's been a while doing okay?
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Oh yeah, yeah yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
I got the Chase Hot air balloons and then I
went to the Iowa State Fair for a couple of
weeks and now I'm back.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
We're good. We're good.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
How are things with you? I see that both teams
kind of getting into the stretch run of the season.
What would you kind of put the state of the
two clubs at this point of the year.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Well, look, I think from a baseball perspective, there's been
a little bit more consistency with the lineup and the
roster the last two or three weeks and Jersh's squad
continues to play hard. It's been a tough second half,
first half into the first half. Beginning of the second half
was tough. But you know, the job for us is
to make sure the Royals have quality players ready to
(01:12):
be called up and to perform. And you know that's
translated into them now just being two games out of
the wildcard race. So that's exciting. It's an exciting time
to be in the Royals farm system. And you know
the baseball boys will be back at Warner next Tuesday,
and it is a stretch run. You mentioned that. Six
games next week against Lehigh Valley a triple A for
(01:35):
the Phillies, and then we're gone for a week, and
then six games against Charlotte triple A for the White Sox.
First time Charlotte's ever been here in the Omaha area
and that will be it. So twelve twelve baseball games
left there you.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Go now for soccer, you guys, you to know Omaha
trying to get back into the mix here. They had
a great match a couple of nights ago against Charlotte
on Wednesday, a four to one victory at Warner Park.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Looking to keep that momentum up. We had talked about it.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
It's very back end loaded with home games, which could
give you Nomaha a chance here to kind of rally
and make it into the field for the playoffs. What
has been kind of the story of the season so
far for the.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Owls, Well, look, it's been a tale of halves, and
I mean halves to this to this degree of the season.
You know, we've we've played about two thirds of the
year and if you split that in halves, the first
part of that was tough in consistency. You know, we've
had a number of injuries, a number of season ending
(02:38):
injuries for the squad, and it was tough out of
the gate. You know, at that time, coach Cashiato was
at the Helm and didn't have a lot of consistency
with with lineup and rosters and performances, and we really
had trouble scoring goals. And you know, he made a
decision to move on and move up a level to
(02:58):
the USL Championship in Tampa Bay. And you know, when
we were able to transfer his contract there, it provided
an opportunity for you know, the number one assistant coach
of any Candela to take the reins as the interim
head coach. And you know, we've had I think three
regular season victories since Anataie, since he took over, and
(03:18):
we've gone from last place to ninth place. As you mentioned,
maybe sneaking in, you know, the playoffs this year, but
I don't know if it would be sneaking in. There's
still a lot of talent on the squad, and you know,
most of this team has experienced either here or somewhere
else playing playoffs soccer. So I'm pretty optimistic. I'm pretty
(03:39):
optimistic that this squad is going to continue to play hard.
They've played with kind of a revitalization since coach Kendela
took over, and they're smiling and having fun in the
locker room again, and that is showing out on the pitch.
And you know, when you have one of the youngest
(03:59):
players in USL playing Mark Bronick scored two goals of
the four the other night, you know, that's that's youthful
energy and I think it's reverberating, you know, through the
organization on the field, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Marty Cordero, who is the president of the Omaha Stormchasers
and Union Omaha Soccer Club you mentioned, you know, and
Omaha they are in ninth. They actually have a game
in handover three teams that are directly ahead of them,
including one of the teams that you're going to be
playing on Saturday. It's pretty competitive from seventh on down
(04:33):
basically to the fourteenth at the very bottom of the league.
It could go any variety of ways, so you really
have to be up. But I'm counting the home games.
There's still a large amount of home games left on
your schedule here, Marty.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
There are, and you know, whether it's fourth place to
host in the first round or whether it's eighth place
just to get in and make it and play on
the road. I don't think this squad really cares, you know,
you go back sixty days. It was just how do
we how do we develop consistency and how can we
(05:05):
be more competitive and how can we get back into
the win column? And now since we've done that and
we've won a number of matches, now it's okay, can
this be sustained? And I think you can. You know,
we'll see what happens. Coach Candela, you know, has a
has a great attitude, a great outlook, you know, and
as I said earlier, the locker room is relaxed, and
(05:28):
we're seeing that in the results on the pitch.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Yeah, so we're looking at kind of you know, all
the way through the end of October essentially is the season,
and it should be a very fun, you know run
toward the playoffs and there's a lot of competitiveness and
a lot of games that are going to matter down
the stretch. You would love to get a win though
at home tomorrow night as you host av Alta FC,
which is coming to Werner Park and it's mutual of
(05:53):
Omaha's Wild Kingdom Night.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
For people are coming out.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
They want to see this team play and they want
to take advantage of some of the great stuff you
guys always have going on at Warner Park.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
What can people expect tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Night, Ah gates open at six and there'll be a
number of animals and displays for Mutual of omaha Wak
Kingdom Knight Tomorrow night. The kick will just be a
few minutes after seven o'clock. And you mentioned a v Alta.
A couple of our former players in Luca and Adam
will be on that side of the pitch as an opponent,
and I think it's an important match. You know, with
(06:26):
all of the home matches we have coming up, this
is one that is against an opponent in front of us,
So it not only would be a confidence builder, but
it helps. It helps kind of give us, you know,
a comp as to where we are and how far
we've come throughout the season. So come tomorrow night, come loud.
You know, tickets are available. You can go to Omaha
(06:48):
Storm excuse me, you go to Union Omaha dot com
and grab those tickets, or you can call the Warner
Park ticket office at four zero two seven three eight
five one zero zero. And I will mention because number
six Ryan Betcher scored two goals on Wednesday night, we
are doing six dollars burm tickets. So six dollars burm
(07:09):
tickets only available until six am tomorrow with the flash sale.
So if you want to come out in a very
affordable manner, grab a couple of burm tickets, bring a
friend and cheer on the aisles to victory tomorrow night
right here at Warner Park.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
I absolutely love that Uninomaha dot com. You can see
all of that there as well. And you mentioned av
Alta ahead of you guys in the standings and haven't
been on a good run of form lately, so picking
up a win here could really do some good work
and at least for a moment, could even catapult you
into the top eight for the time being. So it's
going to be an awful lot of fun out there,
and we're going to have to talk quite a bit
(07:45):
more there, Marty, because of all of the games, the
home matches that you're going to have in September and October,
I know that a lot of people are going to be,
you know, focusing on the football season. The baseball playoffs
are going to be starting. You're going to have all
sorts of different stuff that you know, schools starting that
people are paying attention to. But you're gonna have a
big playoff race at Warner Park for several games down
the stretch, and we'll make sure people know about them
(08:05):
and get them over there to Warner Park. As always, Man,
really appreciate it. Thanks so much for the time, and
I'm sure we'll talk to you again.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
Very soon, Amory. Appreciate the support of local sports, and
you know, we appreciate everybody supporting Warner Park.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
Take care of have a great weekend, yeah, you as well.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
You as well and absolutely check that out. Love those
Saturday evening games. They do some tailgating out there, the
club fan clubs that are out there that are out
in grilling and having some drinks and getting ready for
the big match. And then they march into the stadium.
And then of course the Wild Kingdom and Mutual Omaha's
(08:39):
Wild Kingdom with some animals that'll be and the concourse
of Warner Park. And then the fact that if you
go right now and you go to Union Omaha dot
com and you get some tickets for the Burm only
six dollars. And honestly, I love the Burm tickets because
it is a great line of sight to the field
itself and you can just sit and you can just
relax and have some good times.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
It's great. Absolutely love it.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
And as mentioned this, there's gonna be a lot more
opportunity to see the Owls at home as the season
continues to wind wind down at the end of October,
