Speaker 1 (00:00):
But tomorrow I'm going and hanging out at the arena
and it is the exhibition, the lone exhibition game for
the Omaha Maverick Hockey team, which is the preemitive sport,
pre eminent sport, I should say of the school over
here at UNO and I'm the MC. I'm going to
(00:20):
be on the ice. I'm going to get people jazzed
up during the intermissions and hopefully watch some high quality
hockey all season long. Well what if I told you
you could get plenty of hockey around Omaha, but you
could go downtown learn about and celebrate the history of
hockey and its relationship with Omaha. Well, joining us to
talk about that from the Durham Museum is Scott Eastman
(00:40):
and he is sitting here next to me. Scott, thanks
for coming in.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Man, Yeah, thanks for having memory.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
First things first, the Durham Museum. Perfect spot, awesome location,
great building. This is a really cool time of the
year to start kind of thinking of indoor activities to go.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Do.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Tell me about the Durham Museum and kind of what
you guys have going on right now, because this exhibit
about hockey is really I think got a lot of
people say intenna is up.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Oh yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
So the Dorm Museum is located in Omaha's Union Station
and we are opening this weekend hockey faster than ever.
So it's a national NHL touring exhibit about the history
and the science behind hockey. So it's gotten national representation
of teams and Omaha natives that have gone on to
play for the NHL. But one thing that Dermalways likes
(01:24):
to do is curate a local story along with it.
Omaha's hometown hockey story is incredible. It stretches back eighty years.
There's so much loyalty, there's so much richness there. So
we have a second exhibit, Omaha's hat Trick about the Knights,
Lancers and Mavericks. And the Lancers and Mavericks have been
so generous. Actually, the hockey community has been incredibly generous,
(01:45):
coming out of the woodwork, supporting us, promoting it, offering
up memorabilia and experiences.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
It's been absolutely fabulous.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Yeah, so this is Sunday is a big you know reveal,
but this is gonna be going on for months, like yeah,
so you don't have to go like on that day, like.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
All season long. You can visit it during Halloween. You
can visit it during Christmas. The show runs until January eleventh.
But you're absolutely right. The huge opening is on Sunday.
Sunday is going to be our fan fest, and so
we've got players and coaches from the MAVs, from the Lancers,
from Midland University. We've actually got players from a team
I didn't know anything about, the Omaha Owls.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
It's a sled hockey team.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Oh amazing.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yeah, they're incredible.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
So they're coming out as well as memorabilia from the
Blue Line Club. If you like hockey, Sunday is the
day to get out there. If you don't know anything
about hockey, come anytime. We'll be happy to teach you.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
So we're talking to Scott Eastman here from the Durham Museum.
People who've listened to the show for a long time
know this, but maybe some others don't. I am a
huge museum guy. I built an entire vacation with my
wife around going to Williamsburg and Jamestown and just like
in taking old battlefields and museums of early ettlements in Virginia,
(03:01):
I'm obsessed with history. You know, going to washingtonc have
to hit the Smithsonians. I'll spend hours in there. This
is every bit of what I hope people who are
not museum people will give the museum a try, because
there's so much you can get out of museums, even
if it's something that you're not like passionately interested or
curious about. This is the kind of thing that you
(03:23):
can really get something out of. And for people haven't
been in the durm Museum in a long time, look
at to see a lot of different things. So what
was the inspiration for bringing this exhibit about hockey to
the Durham Museum.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
You're absolutely right.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
We try to kind of have a variety of different
exhibits that will appeal to different audiences, and we try
and make sure that there's always kind of an outreach
that'll get to a non typical museum audience. And with
Omaha's history of hockey, we thought this was such a
perfect match. So it is super interactive. There's over a
dozen stations where you can play physically and digitally with
(03:56):
different things. It scores it so that you can compete
against your brother, whoever you're visiting with. You can come
back try to beat your scores. So yeah, it's an
incredible exhibit, and like I said, with Omaha's hockey history,
it felt like such a perfect fit. But this really
is kind of an outreach one too. You're absolutely right
reach out to a different audience that wouldn't necessarily know
about the Durham. So you can come in, check out hockey,
(04:18):
check out our fiftieth anniversary, check out the trains.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Should be a great, great visit. Man, it's so cool,
all right.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
So for people who are not Durham Museum familiar with
the Durham Museum, you mentioned it where it's located, it's
right along Tenth Street there.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
You can't miss the building.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
It's just kind of next to that bridge that kind
of goes over kind of the downtown area of the mall,
you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Next to Old Market.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
With people who haven't gone before, it's the easiest way
to park, easiest way for them to have access to
come in. Can they buy tickets ahead of time? Can
they buy it at the door? What would be your
tips for somebody hasn't actually visited before. Yeah, we're blocks
south of the Old Market, plenty of free parking. Come
in off a Tenth Street park in our parking structure,
there's two levels. Should be super easy, piece of cake.
(05:05):
You can buy tickets in advance, you can buy them
at the door. Either way, it should be super.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Easy for you. That's what I like to hear. And
it's like not making things different.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Last thing for you, Scott on the Hockey in their
opening weekend, the fan fest, you mentioned all the people
that are coming in here when you have this type
of thing that so many people in the community, different entities,
different team schools are wanting to be a part of this.
Because of the history a sport like hockey has we're
(05:34):
known as like a volleyball place, and of course Husker
football has been really dominant, you know, still the team
that everybody you know cheers for as the Husker football team,
but hockey really does have a place here. What do
you hope people learn about Omaha's relationship with this sport?
And you mentioned sled hockey too, which is something I
think many people don't even know about, you know, for
(05:56):
people who you know, it's like wheel chair basketball except
on ice. So you have this kind of cooperation with
so many different entities to celebrate this sport in Omaha's
place in this sport. What do you hope that people
take from this as they visit over the next few months.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Yeah, absolutely so.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
Hockey in Omaha stretches back more than eighty years, and
it is absolutely for everybody. We've got youth leagues, we've
got junior leagues, we've got adult leagues. Obviously, we've got
the sled leagues. And a little known one that a
lot of people didn't realize is there are women's leagues
that are incredibly competitive right here in Nebraska. The Fremont
team Midland University competed for the national championship two years ago.
(06:34):
So yeah, hockey is absolutely for everybody in Omaha. If
you don't know anything about the sport, come on in.
You're gonna have a great time. If you are fanatic,
you are not gonna believe what you can learn about it.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
I can't wait hockey faster than ever with the ice
Breaker opening week in fan Fest. The opening week in
fan Fest this Sunday noon to four o'clock and it's
at Durham Museum and the exhibit goes until it starts
this weekend through runs through January January eleventh, so all
the way into next year. So find your weekends, find
(07:04):
your days that you can go visit, maybe even visit
multiple times. There's so much going on at the Durham
Museum and this is we haven't even gotten at Christmas
and what Christmas will look like down there, right, so
you guys are gonna be juggling a lot there. Scott
really appreciate the time today. Thanks for stopping in and
we'll hopefully get a lot of people that direction.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Absolutely thanks for having us
