Mostly cloudy sky's sixty nine degrees.I'm Trent Rice. Our next schedule news
at ten o'clock, breaking news andweather as it happens on NewsRadio ten forty
who and everywhere on the free iHeartRadioapp. It's nine thirty seven. Thanks

(00:26):
for listening to Emory Songer with you. I need to know is the show
all around the great state of Iowa. One thing that you hear on this
radio station, no matter where youare in the state of Iowa, is
during football season, you are hearingsome great gridiron action. And Gary Dolphin
and Ed Podolac have been the voicesthat you've been hearing calling Iowah Hawkeye football
for the last gosh multiple decades. It's been a long time, most of

(00:49):
my entire life, to be completelyhonest with you. One of the great
players they had a chance to broadcasthis games. Now we know is going
to be the successor in the boothto Ed Podolac who has retired. And
his name's Pat Angerer and an AllAmerican linebacker from the Hawkeyes, and he
is joining us on the Davidson FamilyDentistry newsmaker line. Pat, first of

(01:10):
all, congratulations on the new gigHey, thank you so much and thanks
for having me. It's really scarywhen you say it that way, placing
an absolute legend man. Well,Pat, I think for you know,
Hawkeye fans, it's going to bean incredible adjustment. And I think the
hope was somebody who knows Hawkeye football, who bleeds Hawkeye football, just like

(01:34):
Ed does, that we were goingto have the opportunity to listen to somebody
who exuses that kind of passion forIowa, and you obviously seem to fit
that. Bill. You have beena familiar face to Kinick Stadium over the
years since your playing career ended. But you're still a very young guy getting
into this industry. So how didthe transition now to broadcaster kind of happen

(01:56):
for you? And what was thisprocess like trying to get this job.
Yeah, so initially the university hadreached out and Liar Filer reached out,
and they had a list of Ithink about ten or fifteen guys that they
were trying to trying to figure outjust gauge interest. And you know,
I never really gave it any thought, to be completely honest with you,
and you know, they had askedme and I was like, well,

(02:17):
let me talk to my wife, and right away she's like, oh,
yeah, I would love to haveyou out of the house for thirteen weeks
of the year. And so itwas very quick where I was like,
yeah, I'm in and then wedid a zoom interview and then I think
they chose a couple maybe four orfive from that and did did a simulation,

(02:38):
and really during that stimulation was reallywhen for me it became a dream
but I didn't even know that Ihad, and working with Golf and just
being next to him such a pro, just so amazing to work with.
And I'm sure I'll probably get frustratedwith me because there will be probably growing
pains throughout this process, and youknow, there's things that I don't I

(02:59):
don't even know what I don't knowyet, but I'm super excited about it.
And just to be able to bea small part of that program again
that has been so good to meis super exciting because without Iowa Football,
I don't know where I would be, and without those coaches instilling attributes in
me, I really have no ideawhere I would be in life. And

(03:20):
I'm so thankful that Iowa football hasbeen a part of my life. Speaking
with Pat Anger, a brand newcolor analyst for Iowah Hawkeye football games coming
up this fall, an Iowa guyborn and raised in Eastern Iowa. Of
course you donned the Black and Gold, became an All American where a part
was a part of Man, isit is it wrong for me to say

(03:40):
the nine team is maybe the bestIowa team of my life and maybe even
your life too, or or doyou think some people would challenge that two
thousand and two team? What doyou think about that? Well, I'm
sure they'd challenge that, but I'dfight them for it. But the good
thing about that nineteen man, iswe were all equally in fame, and

(04:01):
uh, you know we obviously therewas you know, a tough couple of
games there toward the end season. But I loved the group that we had.
It was it was so much fun, and especially ending it against Georgia
Tech and that BCS Orange Bowl gameand and that being Norm Parker's game,
Like that was the reason why wewon that game was because of Norm Parker
obviously have an Asian playboard and RogerBinns and Christian Ballard to Karl Klug up

(04:26):
front, really really helped. Itmade my job a lot easier as a
linebacker. But I'd love to takeI'd take us up against just about anybody.
I mean, we were We're notthe best looking group of dudes,
I'd say that much. We're allpretty ugly. I don't know why.
I don't know what our life's seeingus, but I liked our crew a
lot. Yeah. I think ithad to do with probably the grid iron

(04:46):
action. You know, they wantto be able to be a part of
success. I should throw you knowbefore people, you know go after me
on social media for for leaving offthe undefeated you know, Rose Bull team.
But uh sorry, I to forgetabout that whole thing. Last game,
you know, right right right exactlyand you know, stopping the potent

(05:09):
triple option offensive Georgia Tech, Ithink was a great way to finish that
nine season, Pat I got.I gotta wonder a little bit here.
How much of the calls of yourera do you try to go back and
listen to or have you listen towhere you hear Dolph and Eddie talking about
your team in your career and mentionedin your name across radio stations throughout the

(05:31):
state of Iowa. What I loveis when you know, you go on
YouTube or you go on Twitter orFacebook, whatever, and there's a highlight
of a game and instead of havingthe TV broadcasters talk, you've got Dolphin
ed Like that is just like thatis the best because the passion there,
the amount of the much they carefor Iowa football, may care for the

(05:51):
players, and I'm super excited tobe a part of that and be able
to tell these kids stories and beable to put them up on a pedestal
and do right by them and doright by the program. You know,
Dolphin and Ed have been especially beingdone. They've been a huge part.
I've listened to them obviously more whenI've been done, and there's nothing better

(06:12):
than being in the car driving somewhereand you've got them on the radio and
they're bringing you into the game andyou feel like you're there and you can
feel just their absolute love and admirationfor Iowa football. We're speaking with Pat
Anger, who was just named asthe successor to Ed Podolac in the broadcast
booth for Iowa football this upcoming season. I mentioned you're a young guy,

(06:33):
right, you mean you're still afew years away from well, I mean
after you know, taking care well. But that's why your wife probably enjoys
it. You look like a footballplayer, Pat, I mean, let's
be honest, but ther your youthand enthusiasm. I think even knowing that

(06:55):
you didn't really want to be abroadcaster until you tried it out here recently.
Is this something that that you feellike you have a responsibility to the
next generation of Hawkeyes to be asimportant to them as Ed Podolac has been
for so many Hawkeys like yourself. And that's a great way of putting in

(07:15):
And especially like these last couple ofdays, well, yesterday has just been
completely insane, with so many peoplesending messages and saying congrats and rooting for
you. I don't want to letthose people down. I want to do
them justice and and I want todo justice by Ed. Ed's a legend,
and I've got huge shoes to filland I don't have big feet,
and and most importantly, I wantto do justice by the fans, because

(07:40):
those are without. Without our fans, Iowa football and Iowa sports is absolutely
nothing. And I and I donot take this opportunity lightly. This is
something that is very important to me, and I'm very excited about it,
and I'm I'm going to try.I'm going to prepare just like I prepared
to play you know, Penn Stateor Ohio State or you know, any
of these big teams. I'm goingto take that same preparation into this job.

(08:01):
And working next to Dolph, who'san absolute legend and a complete pro
and just the voice of an angel, is really really exciting for me.
Pat Angerer joining us, he's thenew color analyst for the Iowahaukeye football team.
You've certainly paid close attention to theseHawkeys over the last few years.

(08:24):
It's been a weird few years, the Brian Farrence era in the situation where
the offense became kind of the buttof a lot of jokes on a national
basis, despite the team winning aton of games over the last few years.
You have Kirk ference a lot ofpeople questioning how long he is for
the job. He seems to belong for it at least at this moment,
and has really bought in. You'vehad a lot of quarterback woes.

(08:48):
You have a defense that many thinkis one of the best in the entire
nation, and you, being adefense guy, I'm sure are enjoying that
the special teams unit is lauded byeveryone, including professional coaches who what these
hawkeys on their professional teams. Howcan you best describe what you're seeing from
this program and this kind of strangedichotomy between the offense and the other two

(09:09):
phases of the game that you've seenthe last few years. Yeah, you
know, there's there's three phases tothe game, and Iowa has always played
good defense and always had great specialteams and offense. What we do is
is we're going to run the ball, we're going to control field position,
and we're going to control the clock. And that has worked for us,
you know, for so many years. And you know, for me,

(09:31):
there's been a lot of things thelast couple of years that you know,
injuries, timing, you know, there's been you know, been young,
you know, there's there's been thingsthat have been out of our control.
When you look at our own ninetteam, I think we probably only averaged
twenty two ish, maybe twenty oneish points a game. So it's been
you know, it's something that Iowa. We're going to play good defense,
we're going to control the field position, and we're going to win ball games.

(09:54):
And every single player on that teamwould die for Coach Farrence and just
like just like our team and Onine and in my years. And that's
why when things get tough, youwin those tight games because we don't give
up, and Iowa boys can survive. The Iowa Hawkeye football program under Kirk
Farence has been one of the winningestprograms in the country. Is there any

(10:18):
kind of expectations you have knowing thatthere is going to be quite a shift
at least in the personnel in alot of important positions. No more Cooper
de Gene. I mean, gosh, Tory Taylor was about as good a
weapon as college football had as apunter. He's in the pros. Now,
Are are there some you know,we're hoping to see, you know,
a healthy quarterback situation with Kate mcdamara. Is there some expectation that you

(10:41):
have on this team or are youkind of waiting to see what they look
like in fall camp? All right? I just expect guys, they are
going to be tough, smart andphysical, and that is Iowa football.
And I'm really looking forward to Katebecause if you look at his career,
you know, there there's been somany hurdles, you know, in the
last couple of years that he's hadto overcome, and I'm really excited for
him to get this opportunity to goout there and show everybody why he's the

(11:03):
man. And he's kind of amazinghair Like, I'm very jealous of his
hair. He is a good lookingdude, and I'm really rooting for him
and just really looking forward to himbeing out there and being healthy and putting
on a show for the fans.Last thing for you, Pat, We're
really excited to hear you in thebooth. But the Big Ten is not

(11:24):
what it looked like when you wereplaying. It didn't it's not going to
look like it did like six monthsago. So what can you tell us
about your vibe of what this newBig ten conference and the new setup is
going to look like now that youcan't just bank on playing a pretty winnable
Big ten West schedule anymore, andnow you're bringing in, you know,
programs like USC Oregon and Washington intothe fold as well as kind of this

(11:48):
open scheduling thing that they have setup for the foreseeable future. Yeah,
you know, I think they're theones that are going to have to adjust
the Big Ten football, right,We're not going to necessarily have to adjust
to them. They're going to comein that you know, it's going to
be a December day or a coldNovember day, and they're they're going to
be the ones that are going tohave to play in the cold. And

(12:11):
we're used to it. We're usedto being gritty, and I think those
Iowa boys they love a good scrapand and what a good opportunity for us
to be able though. You know, we're heading out to UCLA, we're
playing these playing these big name programs, and what a good opportunity for our
boys to be able to go outthere and put on a show show for
the fans in the country. Yeah, and you know what, it's gonna

(12:33):
be a fun every step of theway, not just to watch if you
can see the Hawkeyes in person, but also to listen to Gary Dolphin the
Legend and his new broadcast partner,Pat Angerer. Pat, thanks so much
for carver some some time out.Hopefully you get a chance to chat with
you again in the near future.Absolutely, man, thanks for having me,
and I look forward to talk toyour brother. Yeah, absolutely,
Well, what a great dude onthe Davidson Family Dentistry newsmaker line. Pat

(12:56):
Anger a guy who bleeds that Blackand Gold nine is our time here on
your Tuesday, and really appreciate himfor carving some time out. I'm sure
he's gonna be very sought after inthe news cycle over the next week or
so. While we get a littlebit excited for football, you know,
we still have a couple of monthsleft before the guys are at camp and
you start really counting down the daysto that first football game. But we're

(13:20):
excited for Hawkeye football and Pat Angerand Gary Dolphin to bring us the action.
All right, We're gonna come backand got plenty more for you right
here. I need to know
