Speaker 1 (00:00):
Guess what today is? Guess what day it is? Anybody
the Monday of a game week for the Nebraska Cornhusker
football team. They take on the University of Texas L
Paso this Saturday. And today is the first of many
times we will talk during the football season on Husker
Buzz to our insider Sean Callahan. And Sean, thanks so
much for doing this again for us today and welcome in.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Hey, welcome, and we broke the damn down and we begin.
Let's let's let's get the afternoon daily Buzz reports rolling.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Of course we will. And nobody's a better guy to
talk to you than you follow all your social media.
Biggest thing today looked like we got a full depth
chart for us to take a peek at anything that
kind of surprised you, you know, the.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Few things maybe the running back position. There are four
guys I thought we'd see at least two on the
CO one, but really all four, including Dante dall that
we're a listed COE one with Ramiir Johnson, Emmitt Johnson,
and Gabour and Junior, So all four of those guys
will play. I still get the sense that Johnson and
Emmett would be the two that will be out there first,

(01:04):
but I think they want to see what they have
as they head into the conference play. No decision on
the kicker spot, which is not a surprise, I think
Tristan Alvano. It's kind of a day by day thing.
And I think you'll see John Hall in this game
play in some form for sure, maybe in kickoff long
field goals. So those are the big ones. Other than that,
on the offense, there were no other ars and on

(01:26):
the defense there was not a single war. I mean,
I think the defensive depth chart is about as defined
as I can recall it being in a long time.
When you look at the ones, I mean, proye the
first time I went in today, like you knew who
every single guy at number one is going to be
in a lot of it was they tipped their hands
last week with those single digit jerseys. They have nine
defensive players of the starting eleven in single digit jersey.

(01:50):
So there's nine of your starters and we know MJ.
Sherman is going to be a starter, and we know
the other one is Mackay Bayer. So the defensive eleven
is really a defined right now.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
I think when you break it all down, yeah, so Sean,
I look at the three down linemen on defense, and
it's kind of like a three three five kind of
look for anybody that's out there. You know, it's kind
of a more new age thing where you have a
little bit more speed, maybe a little bit more athleticism
out there instead of the traditional like four to three
or four to six defenses that many people saw in

(02:21):
like the eighties and nineties. But man, it's going to
look weird seeing these big bodied, three hundred pounders wearing
these single digits along the defensive line. How important are
those guys going to be, not for necessarily this specific game,
but how important are they going to be for the
success of the Huskers this year?

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah, Nebraska in general, I mean they're a veteran team.
They're a young team in the same conversation, but they're
old in the correct places, and that's the defensive line
and the offensive line. I think across the line of scrimmage.
Nebraska's got four offensive linemen that have started thirty to
forty games, and they've got three defensive linemen who feel
like they've been here forever in Nashall Maker Ty Robinson,

(02:56):
Jamari Butler and up and Comer and Campbell and Hart,
So we got a very good group, and then the
young guys behind them are promising, led by like Riley
Van Poppel and a few of those other players. So
it's it's a good mix. But to win in this league,
we know you have to be old. I mean, it's
just not a league built for young lneman and Nebraska

(03:18):
was able to keep a lot of guys here for
a fifth or even sixth year in the case of
Nashawn Locker and Tyre Robinson.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Yeah, it's going to be fun to watch those guys
go to work together once again here in twenty twenty four.
Speaking for Husker Buzz and our friend Sean Callahan, I guess,
just to round out the conversation today on this depth chart,
you talked about the running backs. That was kind of
where my point of contention was going to be going
into the week. Was all right, so who's going to
get the lion's share of the carries? Now, UTEP not

(03:46):
an opponent, we would expect this to be a competitive
game through four quarters, But what is kind of what
you would expect in terms of how many carries the
unit as a whole probably gets and how much of
that is going to be to figure out who the
first or second guys might end up being as we
move forward, versus maybe trying to take a little bit
of load off of a true freshman quarterback.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Yeah, some of it depends on the length of the runs.
You know, if you get longer runs, the carriers are
going to be down. But you know, generally, I think
if you'd be at thirty to forty in that range,
that's a good number to split a game, just depending
on the flow of the game and how it all
plays out. I do think the short passing game though,
with the physicality of Nebraska's receivers Isaiah and A or
Jamal Banks jan Iron Bonner, they can find those guys

(04:30):
in short passing plays and create mismatches because those three
receivers are going to be bigger than ninety five percent
if not all defensive backs. And that's another thing I
think to watch with this offense developed because Dylan Raila
is extremely accurate, he gets the ball out. The pre
staffs read very well from everything you see in here,
so you know, I think you're going to see a

(04:52):
lot of that where they can diagnose pre snap to
look the numbers and he'll get the ball out and
take the free yards. And those receivers are big enough
and physical enough that they'll get those free yards from
Nebraska's offense this year. And that was something that the
other quarterbacks in the past just didn't have the arm, talent,
the confidence division to sometimes make those throws consistently. And
I think Ryola is going to be a big upgrade

(05:13):
in that area.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
It's going to be fun to watch, and we'll have
every single day this week to help break down not
just what this depth chart looks like, but also what
to expect in the first game of the season against
UTEP on Saturday. Sean Callahan, our Husker Insider, Thanks so much,
sir for the information and we'll talk to you tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Hey, thank you.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
All right. That is Sean Callahan. Super exciting stuff. Really
pumped for the season at hand.
