Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us here in the studio once again is my
friend Olga Smola.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Olga, so great to see.

Speaker 3 (00:05):
You, Emory is so pleasant to be here again. Thank
you for inviting me.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
I am looking at your schedule. There are a lot
of things going on here. How many different shows in programs.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
Well, this year we are producing twelve events in Lincoln
and Omaha about which we're very proud and happy to
invite all the people for free.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
So in either Lincoln or Omaha, twelve total events starting
on July the twentieth and going all the way through
August the second. There are different things happening on different
days and we'll kind of go through each of those
as we move forward. We talked last year before this,
and we got to know you a little bit. For
people who aren't sure they're listening to you, and there's wait,

(00:52):
where is Olga from and what does she do? So
tell us about your background just a little bit, and
how you ended up in Omaha here.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
So, I'm originally from Russia and I moved to Omaha
in twenty sixteen. I was invited to be a visiting
professor at the University of Nebraska, Omoha at the School
of Music, and since then, I'm working there and I
was happily promoted to lecturer this year. So it was

(01:22):
an achievement and I'm so happy to serve for University
in Omaha. And news what changed since last year we
saw each other. I became a fellow American citizen.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Oh congratulations? So this was I love this.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
I like to be I love to be part of
this country. I consider now as my homeland.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Oh that is so awesome, Olga. Well congratulations.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
Can I ask just like what that process was like,
because I like, did you know that that was something
you wanted to do?

Speaker 3 (01:53):
I was when I moved here in twenty sixteen. I
had a one year contract, so I was not sure
how it will go. After a couple of years, I
applied for a green card and university helped me with that.
It took probably a year and a half or two
to get the green card for me for my kids.
And after that, after five years or little bit less,

(02:16):
your legal you legally can apply for citizenship, which I
did and I was like June eighth, last year, I
became a citizen.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
Amazing. So do you have to like, is that a test?
Like do you have to pass a certain exam.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
Yes, it was one hundred and fifty questions, and it
was a surprise because when you prepare for the test,
it's a multiple choice, and when I came to the
office it's actually was not a multiple choice. Oh no, yes,
they asked the question and the officer looked at me
as a were the multiple choice. He's like, it's not

(02:53):
a multiple choice. You need to give me an answer
that from my head. Yes, so I passed. You have
ten questions and you need to pass six of them.
So it was six out of six.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
So even okay, so you got so you did very well.
That's ida is very well, a real college try that
you did there while you help students in Omaha. And
you were telling me about how busy this time of
the year is as the school year wraps up. What's
been your schedule like in the music department.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
Oh, music department just for me, or in general?

Speaker 2 (03:28):
How my life looks like? I read both honestly.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Well, I can't describe you. Saturday, which is a weekend
week weekend, right, So I woke up at eight to
figure out with my kids something. Then at ten I
had a dress rehearsal with my student who performs tomorrow
or junior recital. So we did it like our hour
and a half. Then I supposed to buy a dress

(03:54):
for my recital at the Gallery fifteen sixteen, since I'm
a violinist and I had my traditional mothers they recital
which I enjoy so much with my friend you're a
Kalashnikov the pianist, And so I needed to prepare the program,
actually put an in PDF printed, and then I needed
to prepare the promotional materials for the festival. So I

(04:17):
need to make a design of the flyer, so it
took another hour and a half. Then I needed to
print that, and then I needed to practice for three hours,
and I needed to buy a dress. So all of
that lasted until the ten pm because like last hour,
we were thinking what we should say to the audience
at the concert to make it more fun. Ah.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Yes, so this was a wonderful weekend.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Well, and then you know the pesky radio guys like, hey,
could you come in on Monday and talk about the
Nebraska Crossroads Music Festival, And you're like, of course, yes,
of course, there's nothing else going on. I was speaking
with August Smaller. She is she puts this whole thing
on the Braska Crossroads Music Festival and on top of
everything that she does, you and O, and we're looking

(05:02):
at the schedule here. July the twentieth in Linclin is
when things get going. You mentioned all of these are free.
These are things that people can just go and enjoy
what these programs are. But it kind of across the board.
So can you let's talk about those first couple on
July twentieth and July twenty sixth in Lincoln and what
can people expect over there in Lincoln.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Yes, So, first of all, this year we built a
really strong community of partners of co presenters of each
event about this was a huge growth for us because
community what makes us all stronger, and we truly believe
in that. So we try to find the valuable partner

(05:46):
for each concert, not just for the festival, but for
the partner as well. So that's why for each event
we co present event with some local strong community organization.
And the beginning of the festival we do with the
Sheldon Museum of Art and they have their Family Day

(06:11):
the addition to their program which they started this year,
and we were happy to join them in this wonderful
event and present it together. So for that event, it's
a family day. We will have Poetry Slam, their poetry

(06:32):
workshop with Nebraska former state poet Matt Mason. We will
have a kids program, kids concert, and we also will
have adult concert during this event. But what else we
did differently this year? We decided to put our showcase
concerts in the beginning of the festival and not at

(06:55):
the end. And both of them will happen that we
can't Ulight twenty six and July twenty seven. July twenty
six will be at Lincoln in the Sheldon Sculpture Garden,
presented with Lead Performing Arts Center and the place where
usually just in Green happens. Oh yeah, So people know

(07:18):
that event really well and it was so natural to
have partnership with Lead Center on that event and with
Asian Community Center as well. They helped us to build
our first out out open air concert last year and
antil A Park and they were so amazing partners for us.
So we present this event in Lincoln with two organizations,

(07:43):
and in Omaha we have our open air event in
genie Le Himal Performance Pavilion the following date on Sunday,
July twenty seventh, And what will make the huge difference
this year. We are so blessed and lucky to have
the third member of our team, Hal France. And I

(08:07):
don't know em.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Do you know him not personally?

Speaker 1 (08:09):
No?

Speaker 3 (08:10):
Oh, he is I would say, very important figure here
in Omaha, and he was artistic director of the Opera
Omaha for modern decade and he was in the when
the Kanaka just started. He was the executive director there
and now our organization is blessed to have him on

(08:32):
our team. But he is very famous with creation of
amazing shows. He started great program academy theater academy program
at the you know, and he led it for I
believe three years. So he has an eager, big eager

(08:52):
to create a real show, not just a concert, but
very I would say, fun, entertaining, additional to all our
things what we usually do well.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
And this is going to be like you mentioned, Gen
Lahimh and that's going to be eight to ten pm
on Sunday, July twenty seventh. You're not gonna be able
to miss it. If you're downtown, it's going to be
right there. Jane lehi Mal and free of charge. Can
you stick around one more segment we'll talk a little
bit more about some of the rest that I mean,
there's still plenty of things that we need to talk
about here with Olga Smola from the Nebraska Crossroads Music

(09:27):
Festival which is coming up in July and coming up
at the beginning of August as well here and we'll
talk with her next on news radio eleven ten kfab.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
Em Marie Songer on news Radio eleven ten kfab.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
The Nebraska Crossroads Music Festival which is taking place late
July and into August.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
Thank you, Amri.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
So.

Speaker 3 (09:48):
I will not go very deeply in details because people
can find it on our website which is Nebraska MusicFest
dot org. But some interesting events include Dinuku with Jeratna
The Composer's Mind. Have you ever thinking to go inside
composer's head?

Speaker 2 (10:09):
And I wish I could.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
Yeah, so come to this event because this guy from
Sri Lanka who lives now in Canada, he will come
and he's a very gifted and absolutely amazing composer of nowadays.
I performed his music before, so proved and he will
tell how the process goes in his head while his

(10:32):
composing music. It will be kind of flectual recital, but
it sounds so boring, so we do not call this
way because it will be fun, I promise. And then
we have this just flavored minimalism group. Minimalistic group done
off meaty. It's like when if you close your eyes
you would not believe that music is performed on acoustic instruments.

(10:53):
You will think that it's like electric sound, but actually
these guys are doing this on acoustic instruments, which makes
it very interest. Then we will have soundscape artists air
them who will be joined by local and international musicians
and it will be improvisation style, so we still do

(11:13):
not know what to expect session kind of like gam session. Yes,
so it will be in both cities. He will present
in Kannaka in Omaha and in Music Box in Lincoln.
And then we will have a cell spectrum at two Cells.
We didn't call this two cells because probably people know

(11:35):
it's like videos guys. Yeah, but we have our own
David Downing cello amazing artists from Omaha, and he will
be joined by the artist from New York. His name
is Jake Sharky, and we first wanted them to make
a duel actually, but it's like maybe they just improvise together.

(11:57):
So we're still discussing what they're doing, but it will
be very interesting in this will happen in Blueburn Theater.
And also we have Arabic jazz fusion show of the
Sarafund and Violini's Lealchic Care. And at the at last
we will have first ever chamber orchestra of the festival.

(12:21):
We never had the orchestra and this year we have
first time ever we will have orchestra and we will
have musicians from Omahas Symphony are joining us. Susan Gilmore,
the concert master of the symphony. You will join us
as well, and we will perform wonderful music of modern composers.
And in the on Saturday, August second, we will have

(12:44):
we will join Artistic Saturdays of Jocelyn Art Museum.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
So awesome.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
You can see all of this, It's right on the
homepage Nebraska MusicFest dot org. And I know OLGA because
you guys nonprofit, you want to make sure people have
a chance to see this stuff for free. Also, it
takes some support, So how can people be a part
of the donating team who want to donate to help
this program that continues to grow and really inspire people

(13:09):
in Omaha, Lincoln, and all of Nebraska.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
Thank you for asking that question. Yes, we always appreciate
support from community because it's not just about the performances
our events. It's more about the community and serving community
and make people to join each other, build bridges and
have an open dialogue, and people can go to our site.
