Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, back here, Emery Sunger with you on news radio
eleven ten KFAB and it's a Friday. We're always having
a lot of fun. And speaking of fun, a week
from today, next Friday, one of my favorite all time
bands is going to be in Omaha at slow Down
and their name is the Pork Tornadoes and their drummer
is Mike Shulty. I know these guys. They are so
(00:22):
fun and I wanted to talk to Mike and my
Omaha show. Mike, first of all, thanks so much for
being on a program today.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
It's good to be here to talk about the worst
named band in America. I'm always happy to do it.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
And you know, you know how it goes. This is
an audience that is listening for the first time, and
they said, what is the band name? How do you
land on pork Tornadoes?
Speaker 2 (00:42):
It's catchy, you know what, it'll it'll always draw your attention. Unfortunately,
it does a very bad job of letting you know
what you are about to witness, because you know, Pork
Tornadoes really does not define who we are. But you
know what, it's been sixteen years. We're stuck with the name.
It is what it is.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Well, sixteen years gosh, wow, has it really been that long?
Is it still been like? Has it been the four
of you for most of that time?
Speaker 2 (01:07):
For the most part, Yeah, I'd say the last twelve
thirteen years of that has been the current lineup that
you have right now. You know, the band's evolved, it's changed.
It started off as just a college band among friends,
and it has now evolved into one of the premier
party bands of the Midwest. And it's just kind of
wild to think back of what we used to sound
(01:28):
like and the songs we used to play to where
we are now and now we're going to some of
our favorite places in the world, and one of them
being Omaha. Man, we absolutely love playing in Omaha. It's
been maybe a five to six year journey now, obviously
with the pandemic kind of in the middle of that
slowing things down, but the Slowdown is such an incredible
venue and we are absolutely we can't wait to be back.
(01:51):
What next Friday, I guess yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
It's crazy. My first Slowdown concert was you guys earlier
this year when I moved you know, and I gotta
be honest, You're in Iowa based band, so I had
seen you multiple times when I was in Iowa before,
and then when I saw you guys are making out
to them, I was like, I gotta see the pork Tornadoes.
And then you're the kind of band that I just
want to tell everybody about. Like I'm just like, hey,
(02:14):
we you got to come check out this band. They
are like the most fun you'll ever have just going
to listen to live music. And there's a reason for
that is because you guys play incredibly popular music in
an incredibly friendly style for anybody who likes different types
of music. Can you explain to our listeners who are
hearing about the Pork Tornadoes the first time kind of
(02:34):
what your guys's m O or mission statement is as
a band.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Yeah, we never really set out to be this way,
but I think it naturally evolved into that with just
who we are as people and how important you know,
family and connection is. We we all have kids now,
we all have great families that introduced us to music
at a young age, and we we pride ourselves in
and nowadays there's so many tribute bands where they only
(02:59):
do one artist, so they only do one decade or
one genre, and it kind of alienates people, you know,
if one person likes that genre, but the rest of
that person's friends and family and kids and parents don't
like it. It's hard to get them to all go together.
Where we just play something for everybody, and we want
to look out there and see the grandparents with their kids,
(03:21):
then with their kids, and everybody hearing something they love.
So we play We play anything from the eighties through today.
We do country, rock, pop, hip hop, and I mean,
I'm telling you, we kind of say we're like the
Midwest weather. If you don't like something, just wait a
little bit longer. We will play something that you love.
And actually we play a lot of songs that you
(03:41):
may think you may not like. Like I got a
quote the other day from a guy that said, Hey,
I don't like Taylor Swift, but if Taylor Swift sounded
the way you guys play Taylor Swift, I would be
a huge fan. So we try to switch things up
a little bit, play the songs you love, play them
in our own style, and it's really something for everybody.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Yeah, we're talking to Mike Shelty. He's the drummer for
the acclaimed Midwest party band Pork Tornadoes, who are going
to be at Slowdown in Omaha next Friday, eight o'clock
start time for that show you mentioned Taylor Swift, you
can go back. You have a lot of different songs
that I enjoy, and it is really just your style
that I think. If you like drums, if you like guitars,
(04:20):
if you like good vocals, and you just like having fun,
the pork Tornadoes are for you. But man, how often
do you change the set list? Because I'm sure you're
trying to go into a bag of you know, a
bunch of different stuff, and how often do you adjust
that set list knowing that, hey, there's a lot of
people here that want to hear some of this stuff
that we've been playing for a while that they really
like the way we do it, But we also want
(04:41):
to keep it as fresh as possible for the people
who've seen us before.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yeah, it's it's really tough. You know, you got we
have probably six hours worth of material, but you know,
to try to condense that out down into a two
two and a half hour show and still play everything
that you want to play, it's pretty tough. So we
just generally we kind of go by seasons. You know.
This past summer we were so busy, We played like
fifty summer town festivals around the Midwest and really not
(05:08):
much time to add in new music and to learn
new stuff. But once we come out of that season,
like right now we're into the fall, we're starting to
learn new tunes that we've wanted to play. We're bringing
back old ones we haven't played in a while. So
I think if you've seen us a long time ago,
it's going to be totally different, but you're still gonna
hear some of those classic favorites we used to play
back in Cedar Falls at the Hub. If you've seen
(05:30):
us over the summer, we're going to have some new ones,
bringing in some new arrangements, new new fun, old jams
that you've probably never heard us play before. So we
try to keep it fresh because I mean, there's the
songs everybody wants to hear, the Tennessee Whiskey that has
ten million views on YouTube, one of the most popular
covers of Tennessee Whiskey, and that's ours and people want
to hear that. So you got to play stuff like that.
(05:52):
But yeah, we throw in some fun stuff all around
the staples, if you will.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
Okay, so let's talk about some of those staples because
I want to illustrate to people some of the eclecticism
of what the setlist looks like at a Pork Tornado show.
So give me a give me a handful here, Mike
of what people who are Poork Tornado fans would probably say, Hey,
you know what, these are the songs, and these guys
play this song like that is my jam and I
(06:17):
could listen to them play that one hundred times over.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, you know what, it's definitely Tennessee Whiskey. That song
resonated with people. If you haven't heard before, check it
out on YouTube Pork Tornado's Tennessee Whiskey. Other than that,
you got a couple songs that we pride ourselves in
that not many other people play, and that not many
other people play well. I guess Gangster's Paradise. I don't
know how many other cover party bands actually play that,
(06:41):
but that is a huge, huge, racous song. When we
play that one, do we do a mashup right now
of Maroon five Harder to Breathe with Genuine Pony. A
lot of mashups is a good way to get our
songs kind of rotated through the set. We have a
medley called the Halo Medley, which is Beyonce, Miley, Cyrus
(07:02):
and four Non Blonde. We do a lot of boy bands.
We got a Britney Spears song in there now and
in sync song We're top secret, I'll tell you in
the audience. Right now, we're working on a Teddy Swims
song that's probably going to debut in a week. So
we got a lot of crazy, crazy stuff that people
just I watch their eyes kind of light up every
time we start a new song, like they're playing this one.
(07:24):
Oh my god, I can't believe it.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
Yeah. I saw the Harder to Breathe genuine mash up
earlier this year. That one's fire like that, ah. I
mean when you like the transition in and out of
the songs, like as you're moving through them, this is
why you want to see the pork Tornado. So Mike
Shelty the drummer, there's one.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
Other one too that's been absolutely a banger this summer.
We've been playing ride by twenty one Pilots and that's
a song where if you love twenty one Pilots, you
absolutely go nuts in the song. But it's one of
those songs that's ingrained in your soul and you just
don't know it. And when you hear that song and
that great chorus of that thing, the whole place that's
probably the loudest people sing along during our show is
(08:02):
during that song.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
That's awesome. Yeah, Mike Chelte, the drummer of the Port
Tornado is playing it slow down next Friday. So I
have to ask you your personal favorite. What's the favorite
song that you guys play or have ever played that
As the drummer, you know which one is the one
that like? Man, that's probably my number one that we've played.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Yeah, God, that's a tough one. You know what. I
really really enjoy a lot of the songs we play,
which is why this is so fun that we're still
playing these songs that are that make us passionate and
makes us want to play. But I'll tell you what,
as a drummer taking in the crowd, taking in my band,
but also working hard on the kit. For me, it's
Mister bridside by the Killers. I mean that is there's
(08:44):
a reason that's one of the most popular songs of
all time and the drum beat for me is definitely
one of my favorites that I play.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Yeah, and that's to me, my favorite band of all
time is The Killers, and that song shaped me into
the individual that I am today. So I'm incredibly proud
to hear you say that. And now I got to
finish up with my favorite question that I asked. I've
talked to you a few different times. What's the best
song ever?
Speaker 2 (09:07):
The best song ever? I'm gonna say it, and you're
probably not gonna know, and your audience is probably not
gonna know, but it's my opinion and if you go
listen to it, you'll understand that I'm correct. It is
a band called The Midnight and the song is called Shadows,
and it's the best song that has ever been written
in the history of the world.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
Mike Shelty. I watched The Midnight at Steelhouse, Omaha last Wednesday,
interviewed their lead singer, Tyler Lyle, and they played Shadows
and it rocked my world.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
So The Midnight is also a very big fan of
my podcast called The Confused Breakfast, and we've chatted a
few times about meeting up and hanging out and maybe
even composing a little music together. So please hold on
that fun potential thing happening in the future.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Hey, you got to call me man, I got to
get in on this, like like I am the poor
Tornadoes slash midnight ambassador of Omaha.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
So like a done deal man.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
God, that sounds amazing. I cannot believe I just asked
you the best song of all time and you gave
me a midnight song like that.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
Just I'm just trying to be truthful to my soul
and who I am. Pork Tornadoes do not play that song,
but I wish we did.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Oh my good, I cannot believe you. I literally like
last week had Tyler Lyle on the show. Its unreal. Yeah,
so my world's colliding there. That's absolutely insane. Okay, So
twenty second elevator pitched to anybody that's still on the
fence about seeing the poort tornadoes that to slow down
next Friday, Mike, go ahead.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
If you like to have fun, if you like to smile,
if you like to sing along, if you like to
hear your favorite songs, the best music ever written from
the eighties through today, all genres. And you want to
look like a really cool person to your friend's family,
significant other, you buy the tickets, you bring them, and
you look like a hero when you have the absolute
best night that you've had in twenty twenty four, guaranteed.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
It's literally as easy as just going online searching pork
Tornadoes Omaha. It's the first thing that pops up is
a chance to get yourself lined up for tickets and
super affordable at the slowdown. Mike Shulty is going to
be banging away on the drums with the pork Tornadoes
next Friday. Mike is always an absolute pleasure. Thanks for
joining me and we'll chat again very soon, I'm sure.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Yeah, buddy, we will see you on Friday. Thanks a lot,
