Speaker 1 (00:00):
Always love chatting with you, and you can always call
us at four two five five eight eleven ten four
two five five eight eleven ten. And joining us now
on the phone line is our friend Sean Callahan, who
is with Husker Buzz even on this Labor Day. Jean,
thanks so much for being a part of our show
once again here. And how you feeling after the first
game day of the year.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
I'm doing great. You guys are working hard on Labor Day.
I'm impressed. Scott wore Hees runs a tight ship over
there for you guys, you got to get on the
air and write great content. And hey, we had a
full day here too. Matt Rule spoke to the media
earlier this afternoon set the week here for Colorado. Delan
Roola was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week
(00:39):
that was announced here this week with his stellar performance
And what can't you say about what we saw from
Dylan Roola. He just had an outstanding opener. I think
you had an expectation for what you thought this kid
could be, and what he did on Saturday, I think
you know exceeded that. So it was a very very
impressive way to start things off. To play one hundred
(01:00):
seven guys in the game for Nebraska. I mean, I
don't know the last time they've been able to get
that many kids into a football game at Nebraska. So
there were a lot of positives. And now you turn
the page to what is one of the best rivalries
for the Nebraska fan base, that the Colorado Buffalo's coming
to Lincoln.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Yeah, let's go ahead and do a nice We'll have
all a week to really get into the Colorado part
of this equation because it's going to be a very
highly watched game after this, especially with Nebraska coming off
of a really impressive win. I want to talk about
the atmosphere though, because again, there was an electricity. I
was there. I was in Memorial Stadium, and I was
(01:36):
out there tailgate and everything. It just felt like there
was an excitement to this team that it makes people
feel like we could be on the beginning of like
a completely new era of Husker football. As a guy
who's covered quite a few different eras, I suppose with
different coaching staffs, different coaches, different quarterbacks, different types of expectations,
(01:57):
how did this one kind of kind of match up
I guess for your expectations with just the energy in
the stadium before we even had a snap.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Right, Yeah, just the buzz, the build up, and you know,
I've done events around the state all August and every
one of them had a great buzz and field to
him with just the excitement, and you felt that in
the stadium. And look, it was miserable in that stadium.
There was no breeze, full sun, and the place is
packed to kickoff. It still, you know, was a great representation.
(02:26):
And there aren't a lot of fan bases, if any,
that sellout games like that against UTEP, and Nebraska's fan
base still is obviously, that's why they're regarded as the
best in the country with the support they have. But
when you see something like Dylan Royola the way he
does things, you know, getting Nebraska out of a second
and thirty there are two penalties really as the starting
(02:47):
unit came on back to back plays an offensive passing
interference in a fall start to put him in the
second and thirty. He got him out of it no problem.
They went eleven to seventeen on third downs. The side
arm throw, just the way he was able to go
through his in progression, the deep ball accuracy, all of it.
Everything just kind of got better with him in there,
and there's just a confidence now that everyone now in
(03:09):
the building has, like we got a chance to beat
anybody with this guy at quarterback. Let's just not screw
this up and let's all do our jobs at a
high level. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Speaking with John Callaghan Husker buzz here, he's a Husker insider.
We could talk about Ryola all day, but I was
impressed with how stubborn might not be a good word
because it was successful, but the coaching staff wanted to
run the ball. There was a concerted effort from the
(03:37):
very first snap to make sure that the run was established,
and it was with every single one of those guys
that we talked about. You said that they really didn't
list a starter. Yeah, a guy was out there to start.
I think it was ramiir Johnson who started the game technically,
but you saw a ton of guys getting touches those
first few drives. It was really balanced with as many
touches as those guys were getting and everybody seemed to
(03:57):
be really successful, which tells you about this sts of
the line. But what about the identity of that running
game excited you? Outside of maybe the one fumble in
the red zone.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Well, just the way they pounded it. I mean it
was a consistent four to six yards for most of
the carries. You know, the backups came in and they
weren't able to punch that in that is what it is.
They still drove it pretty far down the field and
had a great drive, but just the way they pounded
it consistently. Dante Dalbell giving them over seven yards a
carry and you know, his first eight carries of the
(04:32):
game and again had eight for fifty five in the game,
seven eight yards of pop there. So I just think
that was really impressive to get that going downhill and
the way they wanted to kind of you know, use
the tight ends and the perimeter blocking. It's going to
open up the passing game. Team they wanted where teams
have to respect the run game, and Nebraska's to keep
(04:52):
working on that. In executing there are some guys that
definitely miss some cuts and some holes, and that's going
to happen in the oprah you play in, but you
have to make the oponents respect that because that's going
to just open things up that much more for Riola.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Yeah, and again, it's just not a lot of bones
to pick. I guess the one thing on the defensive
side was just the one drive where Skyler Locklear hooked
up on a couple of deep balls with that blazing
fast tempo that UTEP likes to do. They couldn't get
into it that much throughout the game because they were
not able to really gain yards. But you can see
(05:24):
that that's what their identity will be. This defense was
as advertised as well as you were hoping they'd play.
I think they even exceeded that got a couple of
turnovers as well. What do you think about the way
that this defense looked in game.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
One, Well, here's a stat that really sums up the
day and the defensive performance. Nebraska's opening drivers and offense
was twelve plays. UTEP's first four drives they ran were
a combined eleven plays. So that really tells you the
grip that this defense had. UTEP wanted to run the
ball more. Scottie Walden even he said that after the game,
(05:57):
we probably have manned the run earlier than we could,
but they knew they could not match up with Nebraska
and run it at him. They had to do something different,
and they knew that they couldn't let their quarterbacks sit
back too long and hurt. Some fans complain, Oh, I
thought the pass rustles from they Well, they ran a
quick game and a style that wasn't going to allow
you to sack your quarterback unless he just latantly held
(06:19):
out of the ball way too long. But they were
quick reads, get rid of the ball, avoid sacks, and
so they were very worried about Nebraska up front, and
they stopped rowing the ball and they just kept getting
rid of the ball very quickly, trying to get it
out and then force maybe somebody to mistackle on the perimeter.
And that wasn't working for him. Nothing really worked, even
when the backups came in. I thought that was impressive
(06:40):
that they stepped in and shut down you tip. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
I was speaking with Sean Callahan here are Husker buzz
we turned Matt rule preseason. Say he thinks you have
to have the assumption that you can get four Big
Ten teams into this new Big twelve team college football playoff,
And that's not insane. I think about considering how high
the quality is the Big Ten. In the SEC Week one,
(07:05):
only one Big Ten team lost, and it was Minnesota
in a close game against an ACC opponent in North Carolina.
What does that say, especially with all the comfortable wins
that a lot of teams that might be considered maybe
mid of mid tier, middle of the road Big Ten
teams like maybe in Iowa and a Maryland who just
(07:26):
Purdue just dominant in their first game of the season.
What does this say, at least through the first week,
about what this conference could become by season's end.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Yell, they had a seventeen to one week as a league,
which it's just kind of funny to think they played
eighteen conference games this week. I mean, it just tells
you to decide this league when you build it up
to the way they have. And you know, Idaho pushing
Oregon got my attention. Idaho did not allow a play
of longer than twenty four yards in their defensive coordinator
(07:55):
Dan Jackson from Omaha did a great job scheming up
Oregon with a very task in Eugene, I thought Michigan
played Freesido State's a good team, you know, in terms
of the group of five, they're probably one of the
two or three best group of five programs along the
Boise State and maybe a couple others. And that was
a tough game for the Wolverines to open the year with,
and their defense looked leak across the board. Of that
(08:17):
Wisconsin look, I didn't think much of them. I mean,
they were losing in the fourth quarter to Western Michigan.
They're still building that team there. In Minnesota, you can
say the same thing. They just didn't look great on
offense with what they brought in at quarterbacks from the
transfer portal and some of the things the Brass doesn't play. Minnesota.
Northwestern kind of did what Northwestern does and openers they won,
(08:38):
but it wasn't pretty. I mean you go down the line,
there were a lot of those types of games. That's
why what Ryola did was really impressive for Nebraska and
the opener, because there weren't a lot of quarterbacks that
did what he did in this league in the first
time out. Now, USC, they looked the part, and I
think immediately you've got to now put USC in that
top four if you're talking four playoff spots, and it's
(09:00):
very plausible today that the Big ten is gonna get four.
I think the SEC and the Big Ten are going
to get at least eight of the twelve, and then
maybe one from the Big twelve, one from the ACC,
one from the Group of five, and then you'll you're
getting Notre Dame in or somebody else. Yeah, I think
that if you're trying to pat it out, that's a
very logical path that could play out on the playoff spots.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
Yeah. Well, if you're a Big twelve fan or an
ACC fan, you're definitely gonna need some more depth in
this league. But at the same time, like you said,
it's got to be depth without you know, cannibalizing the
top teams, because if you have everybody except your conference
champion who's automatically in dealing with three or four losses,
is going to be impossible to try to justify them
being in over maybe the fourth Big ten or SEC team.
(09:40):
Considering the quality that we've seen in Week one, especially
with the Big ten Sean, We're gonna have all week
to talk about Colorado. Those is going to be a
very hyped matchup for obvious reasons, and I can't wait
to break it down with you throughout the week.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Very happy Labor Day memory and looking forward to a
big week here in Lincoln. Oh.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
Absolutely happy Labor Day to you as well. Laboring is
what we do, ladies, and gentlemen, and this I'm sure
our jobs, Matt are the ones that they were thinking
of when they made this day a federal holiday. Just
you know, those radio guys need a celebration for all
the laboring that they do. Yeah, celebrate me. Probably not
because radio was not invented by the time that that
(10:17):
had happened, but alas
