Speaker 1 (00:00):
Husker Buzz and joining us for that is our Husker
insider Sean Callahan on the phone line, Sean, how are
you feeling today?

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Well, quite a Monday here as we kick things off
in Lincoln. We heard from head coach Matt Rule at
eleven thirty sharp this morning with some significant news announcements.
And look, we knew Dana Holgerson was in town. We
knew he was involved, but I don't think anybody realized
he'd be running a full kitchen here on Monday as
they get going, and Dana Holgerson will be the play

(00:28):
caller the offensive coordinator for Nebraska. Marcus Sadderfield remains on
staff as just the tight ends coach. So it is
quite a significant change that Matt Rule has made, something
that you just don't ever really see where somebody from
outside the building with the resume level of Dana Holgerson

(00:49):
is a available b comes and joins your team for
week twelve and c is calling plays that week, and
indeed the guy that he took the job from is
still going to be working with him. It's quite a
quite a deal. It's either going to look really really
smart or you know, it could produce some pretty tough results.
I think Matt Rules made it clear he's I'm fighting
for this team and we're going to do all the

(01:10):
right things to win here down the stretch.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Yeah, and that's my thing.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Right.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
It's like, what can he possibly lose by shaking things up?
And maybe they just didn't have the right person on
staff already. But was this I mean, you may not
be able to answer this was this a plan last
week when they said he was hired and brought in?
Because this seems like a pretty crazy thing to do.
Not only was this guy not the play caller, he
wasn't even in the building until last week, and all
of a sudden, before they even play another game, he

(01:36):
is going to be calling the plays from their offense
that they've been running all year.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
I think the biggest thing was Matt Role wanted him
to come to town. He wanted to be a part
of their meetings and practices for a week over the
buy and he was, and he evaluated. He looked at things,
and Sunday night when the team took the field, Dana
Holgerson was running the offense, he was, you know, getting
things and set in place, and they're not changing, like
the terminology or the plays, but he is going to

(02:05):
work with what they have and the terminology they have
in place. You know, the proven veteran play caller to
run the show, and he's a proven quarterback developer, so
he's got a lot of things there that jump out. Yeah,
but you know, there's just no real comparison to this
situation to see somebody jump in and join Nebraska at
this point of the season.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Sean Callahan's our Husker insider joining us here us see another.
They've had more success, more like higher level of success
more recently than Nebraska, but over the last decade it's
been pretty hit or miss about how relevant they've been
on a national level. Outside of Kayleb Williams winning a
Heisman Trophy. Lincoln Riley went into LA with all of

(02:47):
the hype of one of the best college coaches in
college football, and it just has not worked out there
This year and the last couple of years have been
insanely disappointing for them. How do you best to describe
where their program is? Because they are as desperate as
Nebraska is to try to get another win, because they're
two wins from Bowl eligibility right now.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Yeah, and they're two and five in the Big Ten.
They have Notre Dame and u C l A after Nebraska,
So it's it's not a picnic for Lincoln Riley here
as he's trying to get this thing figured out where
that LSU win seems like decades ago for them, and
you know, losing the Maryland, losing in Minnesota, all their

(03:28):
losses have been, you know, within a score. So Nebraska
wins this game out there, you know it's going to
be a one score, final possession game. I mean, I's
how every USC game has been, especially the ones they've lost.
So you're hoping that the changes you've made can create
an edge. And you know, I'm not expecting an electric
atmosphere by any means. I think, you know, you know,

(03:50):
a place like Los Angeles, people lose interest pretty quickly
and there's a lot of a lot of other things
going on there, and this trutionally can be a game
where a lot of Nebraska fans travel out there. That
has been always since I've covered Nebraska, whenever they go west,
those are twenty twenty five thousand, you know, Husker fan
trips or everybody that's a Husker fan in Vegas and
Phoenix in California, the entire West coast. They will be

(04:14):
in Los Angeles for this game. They've been planning a
game like this for months, so I'm intrigued to see
that this week how that plays out, But no doubt
it's a huge moment for them. It's a huge moment
for Nebraska as they try to put all this together.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
Yeah, and I watched Iowa play at UCLA last Friday,
and to see all the black and gold there. I mean,
for all these new Big Ten teams, especially with these
West Coast trips that are going to kind of be
built into the schedule, adds a completely new dynamic to
what a road game feels like when you're there, because
so many people are going to make it feel like
kind of a bowl game atmosphere. With that being said, though,

(04:49):
early in the week you talk about Holgers Dana Holgerson
taking over the play calling duties and running the offense.
Is there any weirdness to that for like some of
the players that are still you know, intel there, like
the Riolas and the you know, the receiver core and
even a guy like Sadderfield being a part of that
offensive staff. Is there going to be any weird stuff
that is going to take a couple of weeks to

(05:11):
probably understand, or is this something you think is going
to be pretty cohesive right up front.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
We honestly won't know for sure because we're not going
to talk to the only person we're talking to this
week is Matt Rule. He'll talk today, he talked today,
and he's talking Thursday. But there is no coordinator. There
are no player interviews. I mean, Matt Rule did not
want this to be forty people asking everybody about Dana
Holgerson and making it a big thing where everybody has
to talk about it and they get grilled with lots

(05:37):
of questions. So there's nobody available this week as far
as like getting a better read on this, I mean,
tells you how important this game is, how important the
stretches you know that they're not doing. I mean, Matt
Rule went out of out of the box with his
higher and they've gone out of the box as well
with their media access this week as far as you know,
who can talk and what they want out there. So

(05:58):
it's it's going to be a unique week, so to speak.
So we were told we don't have to come in tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
Wow, okay, Well, you know what. I'm totally cool with it.
To be honest with you, I mean, you feel okay,
I mean what did they have to lose by not
trying to make something drastic happen here in the last
three games Needy one win.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
Yeah, I think moving forward, with the way the transfer
portal is and with the way the December fourth signing
day now is approaching us in less than a month,
you have to kind of show and sell some change
if you plan on improving your team, if you know
things aren't going well in certain areas. I think Nebraska
this move will actually help them moving forward and can

(06:34):
give them something to potentially sell, like, yeah, we realized
our offense wasn't working, Well, what did we do. We've
brought Dana Holgerson in and he's going to run it,
and this is going to be a high powered, you know,
high rev offense and del Riola is going to have
an elite quarterbacks coach, an elite offensive coordinator with proven
fifteen to twenty year history that is going to run

(06:55):
the show. Now.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
Yeah, well, we're going to see how that kind of
matriculates throughout the rest of the week leading up to
the big trip out West to play USC and we'll
be talking to our Husker insider Sean Callahan throughout the
rest of the week to preview that matchup. Seawn really
appreciate the time as always, and we'll chat again tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
All right, Hey, thank you,
