Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us now on our phone line is Brad's on.
He is a regional administrator in the Great Plains Region
here of the US Small Business Administration and someone who's
a former legislator of the state of Iowa as well.
And Brad, thank you so much, first of all for
being on our show today.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Well, Emory, it's so good to be with you and
your great listeners. And I know that you're very well
thought of in Iowa when I didn't have my stand
in the Iowa Senate, so you're a legend in Iowa,
and I'm sure you're a legend at Nebraska as well.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
I appreciate it, Brad, and I love the reason I
love doing what I do is I actually get a
chance to talk to so many people who are making
some things happen and have the opportunity to kind of
explain to the lay people like me about all the
stuff that's happening. And one thing, you know, we chatted
a little bit last week when we set this interview up,
and you know your big concern is, man, there's so

(00:54):
much misinformation going around about the big beautiful bill from
your standpoint, and so I first want to start kind
of with what your role is now. You're not a
state legislator right now, but you're a part of government.
You're trying to, you know, help out people who are
in small business. Can you talk me through kind of
what your kind of department does and what your job

(01:14):
is on a day to day basis.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Yeah, and thank you for asking. That was That's one
of the reasons I want to get on on the
radio with you. President Trump appointed me to be the
Regional administrator for the Small Business Administration, which covers the
states of Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas. I'm going to
brag about the Omaha office, which is the Nebraska District office.

(01:39):
We've just got incredible team there. Tim and Melissa do
a great job and their whole team together. But what
I do is we do several things. Obviously, we fulfilled
dreams is what we do, and we provide capital for
people that want to expand their business or if they
want to, you know, start a new business. We got

(02:00):
all this kind of free counseling that people don't recognize.
And that's one reason, like I said, I wanted to
come on and talk to you. The Small Business Development Centers,
which is a coaching and counseling our school organization, which
is made up of volunteers, but these are mentors that
have owned businesses and they're the who's who of the
state of Nebraska. We've got a women's business centers and

(02:23):
our Veteran Business Centers as well, and then we help
with contracting. Are allowing small businesses the opportunity to do
business with Fortune five hundred companies and governmental agencies. And
the big thing that's really been taking a lot of
my time, and thank Gosh that I haven't spent any
time in the state of Nebraska is disaster. We provide

(02:48):
direct funding, whereas any of the other loans we do
is through a great bank in Nebraska, but we provide
director direct funding two areas that are hit by any
kind of natural disaster. Spent a lot of time in
Kansas and a lot of time in Missouri trying to
help those spot people out. So it's hits a grade
agency and I'm just really honored to have this opportunity.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
Hey, this is an interesting reds on who's with the
US Small Business Business Administration here on the phone line.
So the big beautiful bill is still, you know, kind
of up in the air, and I think there are
sometimes where we're like, wow, we are so locked in
on the debate of this and all the discourse, and
we see people like Elon Musk and Ran Paul kind
of saying that they don't like this, they think this
is bad. We got a lot of people like Donald

(03:34):
Trump and Mike Johnson saying we need to push this through.
This is actually good. I think there's a lot of confusion.
You have people showing up to you know, town halls
from American politicians and certain stuff up or you hear
even commercials on the television or even on the radio
that are kind of framing things in a way that
would make people not interested in what is being talked

(03:58):
about with the big beautiful bill. Your perspective, Brad, what
is the most talked about or what are you hearing
the most about this bill that is trying to talk
people into it being a negative for the American people.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Well, you know, I'm not hearing from a lot of
different people in a negative way, at least in my travels.
People are pretty excited about a tax cat in my opinion.
I mean, you're talking seventy eight hundred and thirteen thousand
dollars in annual pay in tax CITs, depending on where
you're at the tax brackets. The big thing is really

(04:36):
the tax or no tax on tip tips and no
tax on overtime, which is something that I think will
really help a lot of people that are out there
working very hard. There's a component of it that slashes
taxes on Social Security, and then there's an incentive to
buy American made cars with you be able to deduct

(04:59):
the interest on on your auto loan. Then I could
go into the they're going to increase the child tax credit.
In my opinion, this is an incredible opportunity. And if
they don't do anything, obviously there's going to be an
increase in taxes, but this makes them permanent, which I
think is really important.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
One of the things Brad and we're speaking with Brad's
on who's a regional administrator with the US Small Business Administration.
I think one of the things that people are seeing
or saying is what this could do to Medicare or Medicaid.
And you know, I know that may not necessarily fall
directly in the purview of the Small Business Administration, but
there's so much it's just kind of an illustration of

(05:40):
the one and sixteen different pages that are a part
of this bill, and it seems like people are looking
at just small pieces or small points and saying, you know,
why is all this in the same thing as someone
who worked in the state legislature in the state of Iowa,
how can you best explain kind of how a bill
like this would work when you're talking about trying to

(06:02):
get something legislated permanently while also trying to put enough
in there to get the votes that you need.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Well, first of all, from what I can tell for
news reports, I mean from a state lawmaker, it's all
about counting votes, you know, the House and bring out
a bill, and then it comes over the Senate, and
then maybe we can't put the votes together, so we
have to, you know, simply change components of the bill.
I'm not really sure. I don't keep track of what's

(06:30):
going on in Washington, d C. In regards to the
legislative process, but I know in the end, you know,
you have to count votes. That's the bottom line here.
And I'm sure that it's pretty tight. You know, obviously
in both chambers and Washington d C. It's pretty tight
in regards to Democrats and Republicans and where the ballance is.

(06:53):
So you know, I'm sure that our leaders out there
will do the vote count and get this figured out.
And I think I really steel positive this is going
to pass. I mean, it's called a big, beautiful bill
because it's you know, there's a lot of components to
this bill, and so it's no different than what we
did in the Iowa legislature. And sometimes, you know, you

(07:15):
bring different components in on a bill, and this bill
is really moves our country forward, and that's what we
want to do. And that's what we always try to
do or get metaforts into the Braska legislator or the
Iowa legislator. That's what we try to do. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
Yeah, Well, I'm just I'm looking at, you know, some
of the bullet points that people have put together about
this bill, and I think some people just are looking
at it from a me perspective and like how this
could potentially affect me, and you're talking about some of
the things that it could affect with small businesses. So
let's assume that this gets past Brad from you know,

(07:52):
your vantage point, what would be kind of the implementation
plan for this and how soon you know, American citizens
and small businesses especially would know notice what the differences
are at like before the bill is actually in effect
versus after the big beautiful bill is in effect.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
Well, it depends on the timeline and what they decide
our implementation is. I know how you know, Iowa live
sat your work, But you know, I think the big
thing is I would respectfully disagree with you in regards
to it only benefits businesses. They have no tax on tips,
no tax on overtime flashing self security benefits on hardworking Nebraskans.

(08:34):
I think that that really hits, you know, every home.
And obviously the tax brackets is really I think they're
very fair for the hard working and that's what the
President has tried to take care of, and this is
what he's promising his campaign is to make sure that
the that the hardworking Americans will get the benefit from this.

(08:55):
And there's a lot of misinformation about medicaid and that
kind of stuff. You know, I think what the intention
was that in my opinion, is that people that are
illegal they should not qualify for medicaid. And I know
that there's a lot of people that agree with that,
and an act think that's where the controversy comes in.

Speaker 1 (09:13):
Yeah, and no doubt, especially while you're in the midst
of having the ice operations singing place in cities around
the country. It's just kind of like an additional appendage
to that argument as much as it's an appendage to
the big beautiful bill. Last thing for you, Brad. Here,
I'm thinking about, you know, how people can get this
kind of information at their fingertips. Of course, it's important
for us to provide this information on the radio as

(09:36):
much as we can. But also if somebody is looking
for this, is there a place on the internet that
they can learn more about the US Small Business Administration
and what you guys are doing, or learn a little
bit about kind of some of the programs of what
you know even your region does and how the you
know what you guys do is helping people here in
Omaha and in Nebraska.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
Yeah, thank you for giving me this opportunity. At sp
FBA dot gov and all the information there. There's a
lot of news releases in there, and I would just
encourage everyone to have that dream to own their business,
and I would highly encourage it. The best thing I've
ever done is I'm a former small business owner myself,

(10:19):
is to go on that website and then we will
connect to you to the appropriate person and the district
offices in Omaha, as I mentioned, are a great team there.
We've got a great SBDC centers all over the state
of Nebraska as well.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
That's great stuff. Brad's on regional administrator with the US
Small Business Administration with the region that you're listening to
us no matter where you are in Nebraska or Iole,
you're hearing us right now. Brad really appreciate the time today.
Thanks for reaching out, and we'll chat again, I'm sure
very soon.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
Yeah, thank you so much.
