Speaker 1 (00:00):
A great community building exercise and all the money is
going to a great cause and that includes my friends
over the University of Nebraska Omaha. And an event that
I actually was a part of last year that I
had a lot of great memories with is the Maverick Run.
It's five k run walk. And joining us is Abby
Hendrix from the UNO Maverick team over here joining us

(00:21):
on the show today.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Abby, Hi, Hello, thank great to be here, Thank.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
You, thanks, thanks for being in here. So, first of all,
University of Nebraska Omaha, exciting times to be over there,
and you know with the basketball, hockey still had a
really productive season, baseball softball. You know, I was at
the baseball softball games. I don't know if you can
tell with the redness in my face a little bit. Yeah,
but the softball team looking really great, great especially, so

(00:44):
can you take me through kind of the vibes over there. No.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Absolutely, there's a ton of momentum around Omaha Athletics right
now and it's a really exciting time. We still have
a few more games oft in the season for our
spring sports. But yeah, as you allude to, we also
have some other exciting stuff going on at the University
and within the athletic department.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
All right, so the Maverick Run. So me and my
greyhound PJ. You can't run a lot of five k's
with your dog, all right, but I wanted to and
I did last year. It was a good time. It
was a great time. It was really cold that yeah,
it was really cold that morning, and I just remember
being like, why did I do this this? Thanks? But
it actually ended up being perfect for a good run,

(01:25):
and it was well organized. It was cool. You leave
from the the arena, you kind of get to run
through the Exarment village a little bit, and it's very
special because of what the proceeds go to. So take
me through the whole thing, Maverick Run and how important
this is to you and O.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Yeah, absolutely, So the Maverick Run will be hosted this
Saturday at Baxter Arena. And yeah, it's a five k
run walk, so something there for everybody. The weather this
year is looking to be beautiful. It's going to be perfect, Yeah,
the high sixties, sunny, doesn't look like there's gonna be
a lot of winds, so we're really thankful for that. Yes,

(02:04):
we've got the five k run walk. We also have
a kids one mile fun run, so definitely a chance
to bring out the whole family and get everyone involved.
The route will take you through the Gurban Village area,
also kind of in and around the uno athletic area.
You had mentioned that you were at the baseball sofotball

(02:24):
games at Maverick Park will run right by those, so
great exposure. Folks can can still register, can still sign up.
We will have and the indoor area again, so we'll
have our community vendors inside of the arena so you
can engage with those folks after the run. We've got
a lot of vendors who have generously donated some goodies

(02:45):
for folks. We will also have a beer garden, so yeah,
tons tons out there. The proceeds for the run, just
as it was last year, same this year, is going
to go to women's athletics, so something that we are
so proud to be behind, and we organize those proceeds
into really four pillars, so the proceeds will go to scholarships,

(03:07):
to leadership development, to holistic support, so thinking kind of
that mental health, that nutrition aspect, as well as just
kind of the overall programming for women's sports.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
Abby Hendrix joining us from the University of Nebraska Omaha
Maverick Run this Saturday. You mentioned the underrated aspect of
like a five k or a race in general, is
kind of the hubbub that can go along with it,
And you mentioned the support that you guys have from
the community, and it really feels like you and O
has like a great support system. Also has an opportunity

(03:39):
for people who are participating in this run, this five
k or a walk if they want to walk it.
The beer garden you mentioned, You mentioned all the different
goodies that might be in there. It's kind of like
a little convention in the arena after you finish this
five k, right, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
It really is. And I think that that really goes
to speak to the Omaha community and the folks who
are really in support of Omaha athletics, specifically women athletics.
Of course, given kind of the philanthropic efforts of this race,
but just like with everything, the Omaha community really shows
up and shows out for these sorts of things. So, yeah,
inside you can join us for what we'll feel like

(04:13):
a community event. You're gonna see a lot of shops
that you're very familiar with, a lot there right there
in the exurban Village area, but also sprinkled all throughout
Omaha who are going to come and have their pieces
to showcase. And then you'll see a lot of their
staff and their community members out on the race and
out on the course.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
It's so cool. I have let me show you the
picture live. This is me and PJ. He's you can't
see it on the radio, but he's a greyhound and
he was really excited and you know we were able
to you know, kind of have fun running through the
village together. Dogs still allowed. Yeah, can you bring your

(04:52):
canine friend because we weren't the only ones. I mean
there were I saw at least you know, twenty to
thirty dogs probably there last year. And it's like the
right time of the year for your pet to feel
like they can, you know, run three miles.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Perfect, it's perfect. No, absolutely, I would encourage everyone to
toss a you and O bandana on there is just
like you have.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
Yeah, I mean, look at this guy, I got a fan.
I love it.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
I love it. But yeah, no, absolutely, seriously, bring out
your kids, bring your stroller, right if you've got little
ones who who don't want to do the one mile
but you want to run or walk the five k.
Bring them out. This is truly a family friendly event
for every one of all ages, K Nines included. We
do ask that they are on a leash, but otherwise, yeah,

(05:38):
for sure, bring them on out.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
Yeah, it'd be a bit of anarchy if we just
you know, like there there are barriers around the just
let them go. Let's see. I think I think PJ
probably win the race if we did that.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Yeah for sure. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
Okay, so Abby joining us here from you and l
women's sports at the University of Nebraska Omaha. You talk
about the nil era, you talk about how, you know,
big time college football, big time college basketball, and here,
you know, hockey is a major player here, and there
are some other institutions around the country like that. It
feels like women's sports have a hard time finding a

(06:14):
seat at that table, which is why fundraisers like this
are so vital to the health of those programs to
be able not just to have competitive teams, but also
to allow them to have, you know, the ability to
travel around the Summit League or you know, to go
on these big trips and you know, get a chance
to play against good teams. The fact that you can
upgrade the facilities. You have great facilities here for you

(06:34):
and O, but you want to make sure everything is
up up to date, not just there, but also the
training facility. You mention nutrition and all that. How can
you best describe to people, because yeah, I mean we
go you get a ton of people going to these
hockey games. But you know women's basketball, you have volleyball,
you have golf, you have tennis, you have of course softball.
Who's having a great season right now? What can you

(06:56):
how can you best describe the challenge that the women's
programs faced that maybe the men just that the men's
aren't overlooked nearly as much as the women's sports are.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Yeah, and I think over the year reason certainly Title
nine has been helping break those barriers for women's athletics
for many years. And so we're really just trying to
do our part. And I think at a place like UNO,
and certainly in the Omaha community, we have great support
system here and folks who truly do understand that that yes,

(07:24):
just naturally some of the men's programs have access to
more resources that the women's programs don't. But I really
do think what we're seeing, especially at you and O
and with this Omaha community that's changing and that's what's
so exciting. I mean to have a fundraiser just like
this one that brings in thousands and thousands of dollars

(07:45):
specifically for women's athletics. And what I love about this
run in particular is that the men are out there too, right,
And so the men from all of our programs, from
our basketball team and our hockey team and our baseball team,
they're going to be out there. They're going to be
volunteering and of putting in the work as well because
they also want to support women's athletics. And I think
that that's huge. And so having you know, a program

(08:09):
and a community that really gets that. And we just
announced gosh was that last week or the week before
a very generous family in the Omaha community gave to
our women's nutrition program. And so I think the more
support and the more exposure that we can give these
women to truly make it more of that level playing

(08:30):
field is really the direction that we're heading in. And
I think you and I is making great, great strides
towards that.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
It's really awesome. So people are listening and they're like,
I can walk the five k. My kids would love
to do this and we could make this a family thing.
It's happening on a Saturday and a Saturday morning, you
have the little convention that you basically can be a
part of inside Backstorrena. When you're finished, it's a great time,
a lot of good vibes, beautiful weather on tap. They're thinking,

(08:56):
all right, how do I sign up? So where can
people sign up? And how can people be a part this?

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Yeah, certainly, so if you want to sign up prior
to Saturday, go to our website. It's go dot un
Omaha dot edu slash mav run. The link to register
is right there. Should be real easy for you. If
if life gets busy and you don't have time, and
you wake up Saturday morning and you say, I still
want to go, just come on down. Come on down
to Baxarena. We're going to get started with that kids

(09:23):
one mile run at eight thirty in the morning, so
make sure you're there before that's come on inside so
that we can get you registered. But we will be
accepting registrations there on site or like I said in advance,
on our website.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
I literally also just put into Google Maverick Run and
like a bunch of stuff just popped up. The first
thing I think is what you're talking about is where
you can sign up. But there's additional information that people
can see right there with the date, with the time
you need to be showing up, how much registration costs,
and by the way, really affordable. I see that, you
guys right now. It's two for seventy right now, is it? Thought?

Speaker 2 (09:57):
Yeah, we got that promo going and we'll run that
through race. So if you don't want to run it
by yourself and you need that encouragement friend along with you,
certainly bring him on down. Kids are ten dollars and yeah,
we'll be accepting registrations all the way up until up
until race time.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
Absolutely love that and all of the proceeds, like we're
talking about here. You get to have a great time
and enjoy a great morning, You get a good run
in or a walk in, you get to be a
part of all the stuff in the arena, and you're
also helping out Maverick Athletics, especially on the women's side.
All the proceeds going to the women's programs at U
and O. Abby Hendrick's doing great job. Putting this thing together,

(10:33):
and thanks for popping in and saying hi to us today.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
Sure for sure. Yeah, thanks for having me out and
hopefully we'll see you and your dog there this Saturday.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Ye hey, I won't actually be I'll be in the
Netherlands unfortunately, so I won't Yeah, I won't be there,
but I'm gonna be sending people your direction because we
had an amazing time last year and I was bummed
out that my trip kind of actually kind of overlapped
with this race. But don't you think I'm not gonna
be paying attention and I'm definitely going to be there
next year. Abby Hendrix unl doing amazing things. You can

(11:02):
honestly just google Maverick Run. It is the first like
six things that popped up, including the top one where
you can register and be a part of the event
on Saturday.
