Speaker 1 (00:00):
One thing that you don't have to spend one thousand
dollars to go and enjoy is going to the Nebraska
Crossroads Music Festival, which is an amazing opportunity to get
a lot of culture, a lot of music, and just
a lot of fun. And joining me to talk about
that is my good friend Olga Smola, who's joining us
back in the studio.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Hey, Olga, how you doing.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
I am very thank you for having me again here.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
I love chatting with you because, first of all, you're
the only Russian sounding person that I talked to regularly,
So that's good.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
With this Russian scary accent. Right.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Well, I can say this, you do very well.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
We were talking about pronunciation of interesting words because you
bring in so many different types of artists, trying to
learn some of their names. I'm sure it can be
a challenge for people who are English speakers. I'm sure
it's a challenge for people who speak other languages too.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Oh, yes, it can be. I practiced quite a while
to try to pronounce the names of artists perfectly. I'm
not sure it was my russiantion. How it will sound
for our Turkish friends. We will see. I will ask
him when I see the artist leader.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
I'm sure, I'm sure it'll be Gret.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
I got the list of everything that's happening for the
Nebraska Cross so it's music Festival, Lincoln and Omaha. There's
different stuff going on. And you actually got started a
few days ago with the first part in Lincoln, right,
So how did that go?
Speaker 3 (01:21):
It went amazing. We had kick off with Family Day
at Sheldon Museum of Art and we had a good
crowd there with our favorite audience, young kids. All ages
of kids always welcome all our events, but some events
are a little bit more kids friendly, so particularly this
(01:41):
event what happened in Sheldon Museum and the one which
will happen in Jocelyn Museum of Art on August second,
Artistic Saturdays. We collaborate and co present this day with
Justly Museum and it will be full of different events,
particularly kids storytelling session with music, also storytelling workshop with
(02:04):
Nebraska State poet Matt Mason, and some poetry will be
can be hurt as well, and then very interesting music
by is Is from Denmark.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Good job, Wow, thank you for working so hard and
doing this for us and our ability to see this.
So before we get kind of into where people can
see these things. You mentioned the Joslyn and you mentioned,
you know, a couple of the other spots that people
can do. And before we get into all those details,
what's it like for you now, because you know, we
(02:38):
talked a couple of months ago about you know, where
we're in the process.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
We knew the.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
People that were coming and just kind of planting the
seeds for people to remind themselves. Hey, and toward the
end of July and into August, we have the Nebraska
Crossroads Music Festival coming up, which is always a great time.
But you're still like far enough away that you know,
you're still just kind of wrapping up the planning phase.
Now you're really preparing for it to happened. Like, how's
life as the organizer of this event?
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Well, I'm waking up every morning at six, not because
I like to wake up at six, just because I'm
a little bit stressed. But honestly, I feel this year
so much better because we have amazing new family member,
our production director Hall of France, who brought a lot
(03:27):
of strength in our organization. He brought a lot of
new members in our family and he is such a
great third member of our team along with me and
Eric Higgins, who is a founder artistic director. So I
feel much better than previous years, but definitely the pressure
(03:47):
is coming. Artists are arriving on Friday, some of them,
some of them a little bit later. And we have
a huge events happening this coming weekend, one in Lincoln,
one and on. And I always look at the weather
forecast because these two are open air events, and it
(04:08):
looks like my negotiations with the Sky Connections actually worked
really well. It's as long I see right now, but
fully yes, no, no, you have.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
A yeah, I do. Actually it's yes, let's see.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Thank you. I appreciate that. So, and this will be
one of our most impressive events ever because we planning
real showcase, short and nice, like one hour and a
half one hour forty minutes with three acts, very short ones,
(04:47):
including poetry from Nebraska state poets Juel Rogers and Matt Mason,
and three different groups will perform, so nobody will be bored.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
That's awesome.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
It's great.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yeah, super cool.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
August Smaller joining us here for the Nebraska Crossroads Music Festival,
free in Mission. This is something like I said, you know,
if you're just interested in a fun way to spend
some time and get a chance to hear some very
interesting music. You don't just get to hear all the time.
This is a great opportunity. So let's talk about each
day in the days that are coming up here and
(05:24):
how people can start making their plans for each in
every one of these kind of little sections of this
event because they are in different locations.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Yes, thank you for asking these great questions. Emrie. So
as you mentioned, all events are free, but some of
them require registration because the capacity is limited. For example,
Bluebarn Theater we co present Cella Spectrum. It's two cella concert,
not classical one. It will be a lot of looping
(05:54):
and some in the name of the concert from raga
to reverb. We will have our local talent and David
Downing there and New York City based cello player Jake Charki.
So it's a very interesting event and it meets registrations.
So you need to go to our website to register
for this and other events, which is Nebraska MusicFest dot org.
(06:18):
Perfect and some other events include in Omaha for example,
have you ever seen had an idea what composer has
in his mind when he's composing the music.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
I would love to know because then I'd be interested
in trying to see if I can figure out if
I can do some of that stuff.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
So come to this event with d Nuku Jiratna. It's
a Sri Lankan composer now residing in Canada and he's
going to open some secrets for us. How actually the
process of composing is going. And this will happen in
Gather fifteen sixteen on July twenty ninth at seven pm.
And the same night a little bit later at ninth
(07:00):
at eight thirty. Sorry, we will have New York jazz
flavored minimalistic trio Gone Off Meaty. It's very very interesting
group to hear.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
That's at Gallery fifteen sixteen on Levenworth. That's really cool.
You get a chance to talk to an actual composer
and then get to you know, minimalist jazz, which I
mean if you're not a jazz fan, a fan of
just even hearing some smooth jazz or minimalist jazz and
just hearing people interpret feelings and their own like kind
(07:32):
of personal way.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
You just don't have a pulse.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
I mean, it really is just a beautiful way to
kind of get in touch with yourself and admire maybe
the talent that so many people have. And I don't know,
there's just not enough jazz that you know, we have
jazz on the Green, but it's a little bit different
feel than you know this is going to be. So
that's super duper cool, and that's next Tuesday.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Next Tuesday, and we also will have during the festival
another type of jazz, Arabic jazz. It's Lebanese violinist Leal
Shaker with her band Sarah Fund will bring very cool music.
It will be performed at the both showcase concerts this
weekend and it will be just a taste of it.
(08:13):
But she will have her main concert with the band
in Lincoln in the School of Music Kimball holl glen
Court School of Music, so it will be the full
program of this Arabic.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Just fusion, and that'll be next Wednesday.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
So if you're really into this, you can do Tuesday
on Levenworth at Gallery fifteen sixteen and then you can
go to link in to the Kimball Hall at the
School of Music there in Lincoln and get yourself a
little bit of a different jazz flavor, which is pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Auga Smaller is joining us. Can you stick around from
our segment talk a little bit more?
Speaker 3 (08:47):
I would be happy to if you allow me.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
I of course will allow you.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
It is three forty five more with Olga coming up
on news radio eleven ten kfab.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Em Marie Soner on news Radio eleven ten KFAB.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
I'm joined by Auga Smola.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
She is in charge of helping set up the Nebraska
Crossroads Music Festival, and she's sitting here as the festival
has begun technically, but the big stuff is really starting
this week in Olga. What are a couple of the
other highlights that you want to make sure that people
are recognized, that they can actually go and enjoy and
you know, get a little bit of this cultural flavor
(09:23):
of music.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Well, this is the artist sounds keep artist whose name
I was trying to learn how to pronounce the day
he come. He comes here from Turkey and his name
is airdam oh my kila kilva julu okay okay hilvajlu.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
I couldn't spell that. If you gave me like ten tries,
I would get it wrong. I think, so I can
read it, and I see you have Airdim and friends
here and this is going to be next Wednesday, also
at the Music Box and Lincoln right and.
Speaker 3 (09:59):
Also so in Kanneka on Thursday. So this program will
be performed twice, one time in Lincoln and one time
in Omaha. And I'm personally going to be on this program,
which I'm very happy about, as well as artistic director
Eric Higgins. He will play the gamba Maris and Derskov
(10:19):
artists flutists will be there to end. The curator of
this year program Kennan Asmeh, a famous clarinet player and composer,
so we all together will help air them to create
these soundscapes. So this will be very interesting concert. It's
(10:39):
a cinema for the years. If audience can walk around,
the speakers will be around, and it will not be
regular concert in understand no alplauses between pieces. It's just
one not like endless experience, and we try people dive
into sounds like in two. So it will be very
(11:01):
interesting experience.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Okay, that sounds awesome, That sounds really cool. When do
you kind of have that in mind that you'd like
to be a part of something because you're playing all year,
you know, like your job over there you and O
you know, you're teaching kids and you're performing and their recitals,
and there are things that you're doing throughout the year
as well. But when you're building this out during the summer,
are there moments where just like man, it'd be awesome
(11:24):
to be a part of one of these shows.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
Absolutely, this one of the dream shows. Like Erdam sent
us his not draft, but his thoughts, and we all
now are thinking, I'm listening to this music every single
day trying to think what I can add to that
and what will be good or not very good much
for these particular music he has. And it will be
(11:47):
definitely the process when the music will be born live
because we are going, all of us going to improvise
over his stuff. He will be on computers and some speakers,
so it will be very interesting experience.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Yes, so cool.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
Can I tell something about another excitement of course? So
this year we first time ever will have Crossroads Orchestra. Okay,
and we have two orchestra finales with the name is
Orchestra Extravaganza. It will be one in Lincoln in Kimball
Hall again at glen Core School of Music, and another
(12:28):
will be at Unostrass Performing Arts Center on August second,
and we are so lucky to perform music of leaving
composers who came to perform their music. So all the
music which will be performed will be performed by the
authors presenting right here.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Oh wow, that's so cool.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
And the Lincoln one is on Friday next week you
mentioned at Kimball Hall and the Glencorf School of Music
and then Saturday.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Is it the same show?
Speaker 1 (13:01):
It's the same show, okay, So you can pick one
and get everything.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
You don't have to feel like you're missing something.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Yes, and you can pick one. You don't need to
go to Linklin if you leave in Omaha, and vice versa.
But this will be our grand finale and we are
glad that who join us are Omaha Symphony musician, the
concert master will join us, and other great musicians and
professor from you, Neil will join us. So it's a
(13:29):
we invited our talented musicians from Nebraska as well.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
It's going to be awesome. So people who are listening
to this and they're thinking, okay, how do I go?
It is free. They're all free. We're not telling you
have to spend a bunch of money on tickets. But
some of these venues have limited capacity, so how can
they get their seales tickets?
Speaker 3 (13:46):
Yes, we ask people to our s VP for these
events as well, so you can go to our website
and it's very easy to find. On every single page
for every single concert, you will see big green button
created by our artistic director, Eric Higgins, on which you
can see our SVP. Please do that to have your
(14:09):
spot at the venue and we will be happy to
see you there.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Absolutely.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
For the ones which you do not need our SVP
is our open air events which will happen this Saturday
in Lincoln in Sheldon Sculpture Garden and in ginie Le
Himol Performance Pavilion on Sunday and Omaha. This will be
absolutely amazing. Bring your blanket, launchairs, friends, family favorite drinks,
(14:38):
and be ready to have a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
It's got a lot of fun amazing. I love that
we do this.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
I love that we have some people here that care
about bringing this to linked in Omaha. Website is Nebraska
MusicFest dot org. Nebraska MusicFest dot org. And that's all
you got to do. Everything is right there for you.
When you're lining up in Oga, I gotta tell you
you've done yourself. This time. Congratulations, good luck. This weekend
and into next week is you know, next weekend is
(15:06):
when this is going to kind of wrap up. But
I know how much work that you and your team
put together to make this happen, and I'm really excited.
Hopefully we get several thousand people to go and check
it out.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
We hope that too, and we are really ready for
this crowd.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (15:20):
Absolutely. And by the way, school not that far away.
Are you already thinking like gosh, this thing wraps up
and now I got to start welcoming my students back
to campus.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
Well, I'm going to have some vacation.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Between good you deserve it.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
I think so too.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
Where are you going?
Speaker 1 (15:38):
Okay, now, see that's a great spot. You're just going
to like kick off the shoes, you get in the
ocean a little bit. I love it all, get it.
You're awesome. Thanks so much for coming in. Congratulate giving
me here. I'm appreciate all the time. When you have
me here, Well, just let me know and you want
to talk about something else and we'll get you on
the show again.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
So thank you.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
I remember that I'll be careful with Russia.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
Be careful Russians. It's all a small again. The website
is Nebraska MusicFest dot org. Nebraska MusicFest dot org. We
got plenty more on the way four o'clock hour on tap,
and I got Lenard Skinner tickets to give away. You
don't want to stick around for that on news radio
eleven ten kfab
