happened to be farmers, and that's a tough situation.

Speaker 7 (01:47):

All right, we are indeed live and it is three
thirty eight. It's Wednesday. Sometimes when you're on a Wednesday,
you just kind of wish, man, it was a weekend,
or maybe I was on a beach somewhere, or maybe
I was got myself a boat and get out on
the lake and just sail away, or you could ride
like the wind. I don't know, but one way that

(07:31):
I know, you can't escape as if you mark the
calendars for June fourteenth at Steelhouse, Omaha as the beautiful
city of Omaha welcomes the acclaimed Yachtlee Crew, which will
be performing live at eight pm on the fourteenth and
joining us as their drummer. Another acclaimed man himself, the
one the only, Sailor Hawkins, joining us on the phone line. Well,

(07:52):
mister Hawkins, I really appreciate you beating on the show.

Speaker 6 (07:55):
Thank you, good afternoon.

Speaker 19 (07:57):
All right, man, I gotta tell you this genre, if
you will, of yacht rock. I know that it is
become more and more notable thanks to a documentary and
maybe the not so many artists of the day appreciate
the term itself. What does yacht rock mean for you?
How can you explain that to the people who might

(08:18):
not be exactly sure the kind of music we're talking about?

Speaker 6 (08:21):
What does it mean? Are describing the music?

Speaker 12 (08:24):
Sure?

Speaker 7 (08:24):
Yeah?

Speaker 19 (08:24):
Is it's the.

Speaker 6 (08:27):
Soft there's an elite, kind of an elitist group here.
I think of soft rock songs and hits from the
late seventies and early eighties. You know, it's just before
what I would call like reag and rock, and it
was just kind of after like the seventies kind of
you know, kind of hippie movement, if you will. It was,

(08:49):
you know, songs and an artist like yacht rocker like
Christopher Cross, Steely, Dan Toto, there's Paul and Oates in there.
You know, Ambrosia hits, hits from artists like that is
what we Uh, that's that's what we perform, along with

(09:09):
a few originals as well. But we're by no means
trying to reinvent the wheel, if you know what I mean.

Speaker 19 (09:17):
Yeah, no, no doubt. Okay, so yatlie cue. You guys,
are you know, a full band. This isn't just a
DJ standing up on a stage just just ripping songs.
Like you mentioned, you guys have some of your own
tunes as well. Everybody's got fun, fun names. You guys
are traveling all over the country. You've been in documentaries
about this genre, You've you've been on TV shows and
getting a lot of attention. What led you to want

(09:38):
to perform this type of music?

Speaker 6 (09:41):
Uh? We actually just started the band. It was simply
for fun. We thought it would be fun to perform
songs of a different generation and era that that people
don't really perform unless you were gonna go see the
original artist, some of them which aren't even with us anymore,
or you know, it's it's kind of like it's kind

(10:02):
of like that time Life, you know, when you're up
at like three in the morning and you see that
time Life hits to the seventies and you're and you're going, oh,
you can get all these great artists and one you know,
and one collection. And it was kind of sort of
a thing like that where you know, you wouldn't you
weren't seeing any bands performed like this, or maybe a

(10:22):
lot of a lot you know, quite a few of
the songs that we performer or one hit wonders. You know,
it's you know, you don't you might have heard a
song or two by an artist, but that was about it,
or maybe that's just memorable at this point, you know.
But but you know, you know, baby come Back, a
lot of people only knew player for that hit, you know.
I mean they've had a couple of other songs along

(10:44):
the way, but nothing, nothing that was notable to the
general population like like baby come Back.

Speaker 19 (10:49):
You know, right, it's a great it's a great point.
I was speaking with Sailor Hawkins, who is the drummer
for Yachtlee Crewe aptly named as they play what you know,
soft rock. I think a lot of people this generation
call yacht rock. And you kind of hit a point
there that I think is quite interesting about just how

(11:10):
people view this type of music. It kind of is like,
kind of layered on the timeline in a weird kind
of area where there wasn't a lot of obvious, major,
massive stars in the rock industry. And you know, I
hate saying it like this, but I think Guardians of
the Galaxy was a movie that kind of brought people like,

(11:32):
oh man, that Brandy tune. That's actually a really sick song, right,
And you're just like, I've never even heard that on
the radio for you know, unless you're listening to a
specific classic rock station. So for people who might be,
you know, thinking to themselves about, yeah, well I'm familiar
with that music.

Speaker 12 (11:48):
What is it like?

Speaker 19 (11:49):
Is it high energy when you're watching it in person?
Is this the kind of music you just stand and
watch guys play. How do you describe the atmosphere and
the energy when you guys are on stage.

Speaker 6 (11:58):
No, we're definitely a high energy show. It's the songs.
Although they're soft rock, there's nothing really soft about Yachtlee Cruz.
You know, we we there's we have a little bit
of choreography in some of the songs. There's the crowd
sings along, sometimes louder than the band. I mean, it's
there's definitely there's there's a feed we get from the
audience and we deliver it right back. And people come dressed.

(12:21):
I mean it's it's it's like it's it's a whole
lifestyle now when people come out to our shows, I
mean they dressed in nautical attire. I mean it's people
go out of their way to like, like the show
is like transcending the music. You know, it's like that
people come out dressed like if they're going to you know,
I don't want to say halloweens are a costa almost

(12:43):
like a costume party, you know, like it's people get
dressed up to have fun and they don't, you know,
for two hours. They don't care about politics, they don't
care about crisis or drama or arguments. I mean, they
have so much fun and they leave with a smile on.
So many people come up to us after the show

(13:03):
and tell us how much fun they've actually had and
they haven't had that much fun in so long. People
from you know, their twenties to their late sixties or someone. Right,
we have a very, very wide audience.

Speaker 19 (13:18):
And that's also a good point. Speaking with Sailor Hawkins.
He's a drummer for a band called Yachtlee cru who
plays the yacht rock hits and some of their own stuff.
And by the way, coming on June fourteenth to Steelhouse
downtown Omaha, and you get tickets, by the way by
going steel outs Omaha dot com. But I looked at
you know, Steelhouse is in a perfect location, and I

(13:39):
looked on the calendar as to when you guys are coming,
and I'm really excited about your show. Did you guys
recognize that you guys are coming during the College World
Series and it happening like three blocks away from where
you guys are going to be.

Speaker 6 (13:52):
Yeah, you know what, we actually played Steelhouse last year
and they invited us to come back and told us
that they they wanted to have us play on that week,
So we kind we had heard about that. That's a
really really big thing for you guys out there. So
we're excited. Yeah, we're excited for both. We're excited for
you know, there's a new audience too that might not
have seen us last time and last time, last time

(14:14):
was I don't know if it's sold out, but it's
pretty fact, so hopefully they squeeze more in there.

Speaker 19 (14:19):
The fact that that day you are selling out, there's
no doubt that the people are going to be packing
it in there, even if they're just wandering after the
baseball uh to check out an awesome show. So yachtlie
Crue coming on June the fourteenth to see all Someaha
sailor Hawkins last thing for you, you guys do I
mean people are raving about the show. I have neighbors

(14:39):
who have seen you guys, and they say, you have
to go and see these guys. It's so much fun.
You'll have such a great time for anybody out there
who's who's not generally you know, a concert going type.
What could be the elevator pitch to get them to
be like you know what? These are the kind of
guys that I you know, decide to go out and
about and get into a big crowd and listen to them.

Speaker 6 (15:01):
I mean, like you just said, half of our audience
is built on word of mouth. I mean it's every
time we go somewhere, we play and then we come
back and it's doubled because people bring their friends because
they had so much fun. So I mean, you can't
unless you're just unless you just like hate good music
and live performance, you know, maybe it's not for you.

(15:23):
But I mean I've never heard anybody say, like, I
didn't like your show, I didn't have fun. I mean,
you know, no, people don't leave. People don't leave. We play.
We play almost two hours every night, and we just
come back from Australia. We just played in Australia for
ten days. I mean, it's it's it's going, it's everywhere. Man.

(15:44):
You know, we wouldn't be going Australia if it wasn't
that good.

Speaker 12 (15:47):
Yeah, that's a good point.

Speaker 19 (15:49):
Yeah, that's I can't imagine what that flight would be
like with all that equipment and whatnot.

Speaker 12 (15:52):
My goodness.

Speaker 6 (15:54):
Yeah, oh it was it was a long It was
a long It was a long trip. But we're just
catching back up on our sleep now. But where if that,
we're getting right back out here and we'll be out
there to see you guys in just a few weeks.
We're excited.

Speaker 19 (16:05):
Yeah, June fourteenth to find your ticket Steelouse, Omaha dot Com,
Yachtlee Cruz Sailor Hawkins, the entire gang gonna be out
there at eight o'clock. The first weekend of the College
World Series is going to be an absolute blast, Sailor.
I really appreciate the time.

Speaker 6 (16:20):
Man.

Speaker 19 (16:20):
Can't wait to see you guys in a few weeks.

Speaker 6 (16:22):
Thank you, Emory.

Speaker 19 (16:23):
Yep, all right, that is a that's gonna be a
lot of fun. Yachtlee, Crewe and what a name? All
sorts of cool stuff that's going on at the Steelhouse
all the time. They have so many great shows, but
this is one that's been circled on my calendar for
a while. As soon as my neighbors said, hey, you
guys got to go, they wouldn't mislead me. So be
sure to check that out. It's three forty eight. We

got more on the way with Emery Sunger here on

and be ready when storms develop.

Speaker 19 (19:44):
All right, it is three fifty one. I am Emery
and Matt cases with me. Matt, you're a basketball guy.
The Oklahoma City Thunder are in the Western Conference Finals
and they're.

Speaker 12 (20:00):
Player is Shay Gilles Alexander.

Speaker 19 (20:03):
Did you hear the news?

Speaker 11 (20:05):
I saw that come across my phone. Looks like he's
gonna be the next NBA MVP.

Speaker 19 (20:11):
It will be announced tonight officially as the NBA's MVP.
Matt who was the most Who was his his competition
for this award?

Speaker 11 (20:21):
Well, most people, and I think it's right, they probably
say Joker.

Speaker 19 (20:25):
Yeah, Nicole Jokic from from the Yeah.

Speaker 11 (20:27):
And then it looks like the other guy receiving votes
was was uh Giannis the Bucks.

Speaker 12 (20:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 19 (20:34):
So Giannis went back to back MVPs. That was right
around COVID time. Right out of COVID, Jokic has won
three of the last four. Many believe he deserved the
MVP two years ago when Joe l Embiid got it,
but people cited voter fatigue. They didn't want to have
they they were uncomfortable giving a guy three MVPs in
early even if he deserved it. Can I read some
stats for you here, Matt, and you can make a

(20:56):
decision on this. Uh. Shay Gil Alexander in seventy six
games played this season, so a durable guy for this
era for sure. Uh thirty two point seven points per game,
which is the league high. Okay Jo Kic twenty nine
point six, so he was third in points per.

Speaker 12 (21:16):
Game, about three less than Shay.

Speaker 19 (21:18):
Right field goal percentage Shae Gildes Alexander fifty two percent,
Joker fifty seven point six Okay, both players two threes
made per game okayok Yo Kich forty two percent from three,
Shay thirty seven percent from three. So advantage Yo.

Speaker 12 (21:37):
Kich five above on both cases.

Speaker 19 (21:41):
Yep, free throw line. Shay was a ninety percent shooter
this year on high volume, so that's really impressive. Yo
Kich eighty percent from the line rebounds, Yo Kich twelve
point seven rebounds per game, which was good enough to
be third in the league. Shay Gildes Alexander five rebounds
a game. Assists per game, Nicole Jokic ten point two

(22:05):
assists per game, good enough for second in the NBA.
Shake guildes Alexander six point four assists per game. You
want to go to steels per game, Jokic one point eight,
Shay one point seven, blocks, Jokic point six, and Shay
had won so advantage. Shay I suppose Jokic averaging a

(22:29):
triple double, just the third player in NBA history to
average a triple double across an entire season. He had
fifty nine double doubles in thirty four triple doubles this season.
Shake guildes Alexander had six double doubles in zero triple
doubles this year. Now, Shay's team was the best team

(22:50):
in the NBA, the Oklahoma City Thunder. They're in the
conference finals. They went sixty eight and fourteen, but many
believe their entire team is pretty loaded. The Nuggets went
fifty to thirty two, took the Thunder to and many
believe that Jokic has no help, basically, no all stars
on his team. Even though he has guys that can
have big games, they're not very consistent.

Speaker 22 (23:10):
Uh.

Speaker 19 (23:10):
And the Nuggets had, you know, fired their coach with like,
you know, three weeks left in the season. So I
guess my my question to you is, how on earth
can you justify Shake Gildess Alexander being the MVP over
NICOLEA Jokic.

Speaker 11 (23:22):
Voter fatigue is definitely part of it. Also, Nuggets only
made it to the second round of the playoffs.

Speaker 19 (23:30):
Yeah, but this is a regular season award. They voted on,
they voted, they voted before the playoffs began. Now you
could you could say that Shaye beat him in the playoffs,
but that's a team thing, right, Like what would Denver
be without Jokic? What would what would OKC be without Shay?

(23:51):
Like I feel like Oklahoma City is still a pretty
solid team with Jalen Williams. They need Shay obviously, but
Alex Caruso and Hartenstein and all the guys chet Holmegrin,
Like they're a good rate, well rounded team. Denver, I mean,
Denver doesn't make the playoffs at all without Jokic, Like
they're so bad when he's not on the floor.

Speaker 12 (24:11):
What's the plus minus?

Speaker 19 (24:13):
Uh, plus minus? Firmly in favor of Yokic, all of
the analytics when he's on the floor versus off the floor.
It is a wide margin of how bad the Nuggets
are versus the thunder which they take a little bit,
but it's nowhere close to the same.

Speaker 11 (24:26):
Did you see total aside Mitchell Robinson's plus minus against
the Celtics? What was it remarkable? I can't remember that
one of the games. I think it was like plus forty.

Speaker 24 (24:36):
Jeez.

Speaker 11 (24:37):
Yeah, all right, well but no, you made a compelling argument,
that's for sure.

Speaker 19 (24:41):
I'm just saying it doesn't make any sense, and I
hate you watching the guy. He just flops around like
a fish most of the time. Anyway, Congrats to him.
