Welcome to Iron the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty.
I'm Steve Rivera. In today with me is my Friday guy,
Jay Gonzalas, and my other guy who's not a Friday guy,
but he's in today, Juan.

Speaker 4 (00:29):
One and done, one and done. Not this week though,
I've been all over this week.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, but you're not usually my Friday again. Yeah,
I used to be. That's how I started darting. Yeah,
we come in man, all Mexicans in the room. Feels good.
It's right. Locked the doors, man, it's all right, locked
the doors, that's all right.

Speaker 5 (00:47):
Yeah, just let us know if I this is on
the way, Please give us, give us some time. Last
week you said something crazy. Today you say something crazy.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
What do you drinking? What do you we?

Speaker 6 (01:00):
I'm meaning this this microwave popcorn in it's this a
little got a little something.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
Yeah yeah, I don't know. I guess.

Speaker 7 (01:08):
Well.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Welcome everybody, another Friday, good show today. I think we're
gonna be talking about a lot of different things. One
of the guys you brought in, Jay, who is the guy?

Speaker 6 (01:16):
His name is Todd Tryon. He's the commissioner of the
Indoor Football League. He's gonna be joining us. Uh. You know,
the big news or the news is that Tucson is
hosting the IFL National Championship here on August twenty third.
The playoffs start this weekend. In fact, tomorrow there are
two games, two games, one game tomorrow to on set

(01:38):
on Sunday and and uh then the Rattlers are hosting
San Diego on Monday night in Glendale.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
So this news came out a few months ago, right,
it's been a while three four months ago you were
you were not with the with the teams.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Then you are.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
Now I had on mister guy here when it happened,
because he was pivotal and get it here. Let me
ask you, Uh, it's a huge deal, right, it's a
huge deal. How do you think it came about quite Tucson.

Speaker 6 (02:09):
The commission right, Kevin Guy, the owner of the you know,
he and his wife owned the Sugar Skulls. He's the
president and coach of the Rattlers. He's the one that's
that's been very instrumental in all of this. It's because
of him that the expansion that's taking place out here
in the West. There's three teams now in Arizona, two
in California. And he's been very aggressive, uh and and

(02:32):
thinks that Tucson is a good place for indoor football. So,
you know, the contract was up. They did it for
three years in Vegas while Henderson actually there's a new
arena there and that's where the Vegas night Hawks play.
And he was just aggressive and thought Tucson would be
a good place for it.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
Was the Vegas as a team, right, Yes, did they
play in it at all?

Speaker 2 (02:54):
They didn't.

Speaker 6 (02:54):
They did not play in the championship. Give me some background.
Did it draw well did?

Speaker 2 (02:59):
I don't really know.

Speaker 6 (03:00):
You know, we can talk talk to about that and
ask him, you know, what, what was the draw to Tucson.
But you know, Kevin's just been very bullish on Tucson
being a good place for hind or football and and so.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
You know it's really that.

Speaker 6 (03:17):
And so it's three years, an opportunity for Tucson to
have this year three years and make it a big deal,
bring fans in, bring tourists in at a time you know,
in August that you know, people tend to be leaving
and so you know it's right before the a football
season starts, so you know there's a lot of things. Yeah,
the students are back, so you know they want to

(03:39):
get they want to get this. The arena filled up
and get people excited about just coming to see a
game and it's like it's a league championship game. Outside
of when the Toros you know played in you know
PCL Championship Series, we haven't had anything like this here.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
So let me ask you because you've been in the
day to day recently, uh the TCC being rejuvenated or
renovated or or whatever.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Well, they did a whole bunch of words.

Speaker 6 (04:08):
Well, there was a renovation that took place, you know
a few years ago through when Rion Nuevo got got
the ball rolling on a bunch of stuff.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
The the arena is in pretty good shape, impressive enough
to have this. Yes, yeah, you.

Speaker 6 (04:21):
Know it's it's a seven thousand seat hold, seven thousand
for a game like this, which is which is a
good number. You know, if you get seven thousand people
at this game and you fill up the arena. It's
gonna be it's gonna be fun. So it's look, is it.
It's an old arena, it's fifty some years old. It's
it's you know, it got run down a little bit,
but not a bit quite a bit. I know it

(04:43):
was pretty run down when I was working at the
city in two thousand and two. But they've they've done
a lot with it to to to dress it up
as much as you can for a facility this whole.
Does it have all the Martin accouterments in terms of
its press box and those kinds of things.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
No, But is it is it good enough to hold
an event like this? Yeah?

Speaker 6 (05:03):
You know, there's a lot of work taking place, and
then Todd can go into this as well to make
this event. It's not just the game. You know, there's
there's a pregame tailgate. There's a media day, there's a
champions dinner or an honors dinner. There's an owner's meet
uh and owners and coaches reception.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
There's a whole several days of activities leading up to
the game. Could you google accouchment for me please? Uh?
This mixic could throw a word out there. There's unlike him,
I have to see.

Speaker 6 (05:39):
So if you look, it's important for Tucson to really
again to show to show it, to show its colors
that it's it can be a sports town. And and
and certainly the Sugar Skulls are hoping that you drive
you get some people to the arena for this game
and see this is a fun game that they'll come
next year.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
Well, income incomes the commissioner to talk about it today,
and you are going to be busy.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
You have to sell it to I.

Speaker 6 (06:05):
Do personally, I'm I'm I'm running media for it and
we're just getting, you know, starting to do that. I've
got to I've got to do and set up the
media day event that we're gonna have. But you I'm
probably gonna try. You're gonna not try. You you said
you are, so you are going to be there doing
this show from there on that day.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Hey, I got to ask if they can take the
equipment out because you had all the equipment out there.

Speaker 6 (06:34):
You're gonna have to hallo my laptop and you can
go and you'll do your show.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
That's all you need out there. You're in your laptop, baby,
you get ready.

Speaker 6 (06:41):
But but you know, we want to make it a
great event, and it can be a fun event for Tuason.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Yeah, no, good, good, good good. We'll talk more about
it when he comes up the first first hour. And
then we have one of our old buddies, David Hirsch
was a graduate of U, a baseball player here at
Uve Media guy at Juve and then went to the
PAC twelve and did that for a number of years
and then ended up with the ESPN on the Las
Vegas Bull and just retired, just retired.

Speaker 6 (07:09):
Which is hard to believe because I'm still a young
looking guy, which kind of pissed me off right right right,
But you know.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
Good athlete.

Speaker 6 (07:17):
He was a he was a U of a baseball
player and just you know this guy who was around
here a long time. It's because of him, Steve, that
I've been able to work all those PAC twelve tournaments,
which has led to me been able to work a
bunch of NC Double A tournaments and stuff like that.
You know, he's the guy, he's the guy behind that,
whether whether you blame him for that.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
Or well, and the rest of Gonzales. So we'll talk
about him on curt things. Some certain things we're not
going to talk about about his time at the PAC
twelve and maybe some of the bigger moments, because there
have been huge moments usc u S time of dominance
in football, big games and things like that. You of

(07:56):
a U of A National championships, stuff like that, right,
I guess he was able to do all that, So you.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Know, just some of the moments.

Speaker 6 (08:03):
Yeah, you know, guy who has a lot of history
with with the u of A and went the PAC
twelve that, you know, Just I think it'd be fun
stuff to talk.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
About a lot of great experiences. Okay, what else is
going on?

Speaker 2 (08:14):
It's a Friday, summer's almost ending. Football. I haven't really
paid much attention. I know that I watched the game
last night.

Speaker 6 (08:20):
Oh you're talking about the Hall of Fame about you
a football, but well I did football.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
It was football, because he's getting giddy, right, he was football.
Although I will say, if you have a heart attack,
I'm not going to give you.

Speaker 6 (08:35):
An Okay, And I get your preseason games are for
for other guys to show out, right, you guys, who
are you were trying to you know, we're trying to
make the team and whatnot. But I just feel I
proposed this last night to some friends that in the
Hall of Fame Game, which is the first game of
the season in college, NFL whatever, it's the first game,

(08:57):
and you know the start, none of the starters don't play.
M I feel, Mike, Mike, I think that there should
be a rule, a rule, not just a policy, a
rule that starters on both sides play the first series
of the game. And if you don't want your quarterback
to get hurt, then you make a rule that you
can't touch the quarterback right that if it's too hand

(09:19):
touched for a sack. But to turn it on and
see guys that you don't know from the kickoff on,
it takes a little juice out him.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
And you watched it all? I did? Oh, I didn't
watch me. I watched one well. I ultimately went to
dinner before it ended. But yeah, pretty much watched most
of it. My surprise was Trey Trey Young.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
No, no, no, Tre that guy, that guy, he's still
around quarterbacking for the Chargers. Chargers, I thought he was
Where was he? Was he with the Cowboys?

Speaker 4 (09:48):
He was with the Cowboys for a long time. No, no,
because he was with somebody else. He came up with
with the Niners. The Niners drafted him then he moved
him to the Cowboys. So now he's with the Chargers.
On the Chargers, how did that happen.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
Because he's not any good.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Well, that's that's my point. I mean, well, and he's
still in the league and he was just with the Cowboys.
But he looked good because he played against the Well,
I know.

Speaker 6 (10:07):
Chris Collinsworth was oooing and nine about him last night
on the on the thing, I'm like, Chris, relax, Okay,
you're you're putting him in the Hall of Fame.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
Not he's not. He's the third string quarterback.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
Right right, So you watch it. I watched a smidge
of it. I'm really I saw the pick six or
the potential, you know what. The to me, it was
not about already. Who was I don't know, oh your
charges were up twenty one three or twenty one? Well
big the whole time I had been the Charger, I says, well,
I know who your first pick of the weekend is
going to be Chargers just whoever they play.

Speaker 6 (10:39):
Now, I just I just it was just great to
see football on the TV.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
That's it.

Speaker 6 (10:46):
You know, Steve the other day, not the other day
day before yesterday. You know, I'm flipping channels and there
was a two thousand and five USC UCLA football game
on and I put it on because I wanted to
see Reggie Reggie.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
Bus, Reggie Bush. You know, you forget how good that
guy was. Damn that guy was so good.

Speaker 6 (11:10):
And you know what, And it's funny now after the
fact that when we saw how Matt Liner's pro career
went to so you realize Matt Liner wasn't any good
and he never should have won the Heisman Trophy.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
But he had all these guys around him.

Speaker 6 (11:23):
I was watching his He was slow, he had no
he had no arm, he couldn't move in the pocket,
but he would he kept Every pass was a five
yard pass to a tight end.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Or to Reggie Bush, or to or he threw he
just threw the.

Speaker 6 (11:40):
Ball up in the air. One of his great receivers
went and got it. That's why he was good, not
because he was good.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
Did that make sense, Yes, it makes sense, But it's fun.

Speaker 4 (11:50):
To watch because that was great analysis. To be honest,
he was good, but not that good. But you know
he was good.

Speaker 8 (11:57):
To day.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
He was good, but not today good. That's why he's
by Friday. You know what it is Steve all this
that comes out on Friday. I used to be able
to spread it out over the week.

Speaker 6 (12:07):
Now it's all concentrated in compact, right, Yeah, I have
the boys. You know, it's like it's like that concentrated
orange juice. You know, it's that you open the canon.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
Out. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (12:19):
I do think we need to take a little moment
of silence for all the cowboy fans out there.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
What happened today?

Speaker 4 (12:26):
Uh Parsons officially requested a trade.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
Oh yeah, you're not going to trade. You're not going
to trade him.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
That's just that's just the cowboy drama business. Yeah, that's
the cowboy. There was a there was a I'll get
you a dinner that he doesn't get traded. All your
mom's and banaa.

Speaker 2 (12:43):
Jason garrett on on Dan Patrick the other day asked
him about that. He said, this is just the way.

Speaker 6 (12:47):
This is Jimmy Jerry Jones philosophy on how to do
business said for most people, he goes in my philosophy,
if I'm owning the team, I want to sign these
guys before you get because you get them cheaper. For
some reason, Jerry thinks it's a great business model to
wait until it gets to this, and then you sign
him and he ends up paying more for the players

(13:08):
than he needs to, like he did with Dak Dak Prescott,
the way he did with CD Lamb, and now he's
gonna do it again with Michael Parsons. He's not gonna
let him go. But now he's waited for all these
other guys to get their contracts. Now he's gonna have
to pay Michael Parsons more than those guys.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
And at the end of the day, guess what they're
still gonna be. They're still gonna.

Speaker 6 (13:29):
He's not gonna get you know, it's it's a game
that both sides are playing. And I don't know why
the Cowboys choose to play this game like this.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
I've got a feeling that I'm gonna get a call
from our Cowboys correspondent, Fat.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
Mike, you know, the Cowboys. But it's crazy. I look,
Jerry Jones is a billionaire, right, I mean, who are
we to say you know what you're doing.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
But let me tell you, the Cowboys fans for the
a lot of the recent years saying he's got to
beat please sell the team or get right, get moving right,
because you're the crutch to the whole thing.

Speaker 6 (14:04):
Yeah, and you can say he's a good businessman from
the standpoint of he's made a lot of money in
his life, but he's certainly not a good GM They
had good or a good or good team owner.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
When was the last time they won a Super Bowl?
Since before the U of A was in the National Championship.
I knew exactly where you were going. This is why
you and I judge each Just because I'm.

Speaker 3 (14:25):

your stuff. This is why we like to see each

Hey, welcome back you Why on the ball here at
Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera and Libidity is
mister Jagnzalez.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
That on the phone.

Speaker 3 (19:07):
We have Todd Try on the IFL Commissioner. How you
doing Todd.

Speaker 7 (19:13):
Well?

Speaker 2 (19:13):
Appreciate the in no great great to have you on.

Speaker 3 (19:16):
Let me say this before we get into the big
game here coming up by your picture, to me, you
look like a dude that played linebacker for the Chicago Bear.

Speaker 7 (19:27):
You know, I'm fifty years old and we all had
a we were all great back in the day. But
I was actually a scholarship quarterback and then I ended
up with safety in the indoor game.

Speaker 2 (19:39):
Where did you play, Todd?

Speaker 7 (19:40):
I wasn't University of South Dakota.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
Okay, okay, well okayeah, yeah, yeah, you look like the player. Yeah,
just by the picture. Cool. Cool.

Speaker 6 (19:49):
So Toddy, we've been and let me be full on,
full disclosure. I'm helping the league with the uh the
operation for the championship game coming up. But uh, you know,
we just wanted give you a chance to, you know,
to talk to Tucson about the game. And one of
the questions Steve was asking me is why is it
in Tucson. You know, you had in Vegas for a
few years. Now Tucson's got it. What was the attraction

(20:12):
to Tucson for the championship game for the next three years?

Speaker 7 (20:16):
You know, if we wanted to be West, we've got
the biggest cluster of teams out west. Anytime you do
something like this, there's multiple things you look at. You
want to you want to make sure that that you've
got an environment that a lot of teams can can
get to from a travel standpoint, A busing standpoint, we
tend to look for warm environments. We tend to look
for areas that we're looking at growth. And you know,

(20:40):
at the end of the day, the city of Tucson
did an unbelievable job of stepping up saying, hey, we
want this game, and you know, we're like, all right,
we're coming. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (20:48):
No, I think you're going to do a great job here. Now,
you just got to get people in the seats. And
I know Kevin Guy is one of those optimistic guys,
and I'm sure he's hoping and praying that his guys
get here.

Speaker 7 (21:01):
You know, he is, you coach guys, one of the
best out there. And you know, if it comes down
to coaching, my money's probably gonna be on him. And
they open up Monday night. They've got a tough San
Diego team coming in and uh, you know he's got
to win too, and if he can win to it's
it's a short travel down south there for those Glendale
fans and Phoenix Phoenix fans. Uh, but you know it's

(21:24):
the best team is gonna come out of the West
and we'll see what happens.

Speaker 6 (21:27):
So Todd, one of the things that we want to
do we want to talk about the playoffs so they
people can familiarize themselves with you know, who's in the
league and and where are they from. But let's talk
somewhere about the championship game. So now we've been talking
about there's there's this several days of activities that are
part of this. Tell the fans about some of the
things that they can take part in to be a

(21:48):
part of all of.

Speaker 7 (21:48):
This as you about from a fan perspective. We've got
a media Day that'll be Friday afternoon, three o'clock. It's
going to be on the field, creating a great environment there.
You fans can definitely participate in that. Watch that. You've
got the captains and coaches and owners from each team
that'll be up on stage, and you know that's where
we'll have some of our big announcements as we look
into twenty six. So so media Day will be an event.

(22:09):
We've got a Night of champions which is our award banquet.
They'll have an opportunity to purchase seats at that if
they choose to do that. That's also going to be
on the field, going to be a cool environment off
for our awards banquet Saturday we have a tailgate that's
going to be happening before the game. We're so ironing
out those details, but you know, it's one of those
things that when you throw a tailgate, it better be fun,

(22:32):
and so that one is going to be fun. And
then we've got the game kicking off at seven thirty
Saturday night live on CBS Sports, and the following that
they'll be a big after party at the winning spot
and you know, everyone will pack up and then start
building for twenty.

Speaker 3 (22:46):
Six before before we move forward with that. You you
were in Vegas for a number of years, right, How
is it attended?

Speaker 2 (22:53):
Dren? How is it received?

Speaker 7 (22:56):
You know, we're in Vegas for three years and we've
always we used to always go to the number one seed.
And the challenge that was creative by going to the
number one seed is you only had a week a
week plus to plan for the event because you didn't
know where it was.

Speaker 2 (23:09):
Going to be at.

Speaker 7 (23:10):
And because of that, we never had full participation from
the other participants, like the other owners and coaches and
players because they couldn't plan to go to it. And
now that we had, we choose to go on neutral
site there in Vegas. Vegas is a great attraction place
to go to it. You know, people were able to
make plans and our attendance from ownership, coaches and players

(23:32):
have been outstanding, and you know we've been able to
prep for it, plan for it for the last few months.
But the neutral party side, the challenge that you do
have is is the matchup, you know, is the matchup
going to be right to attract the fans. You know,
here we are in Tucson. You know, is an Arizona
team gonna win out Well, there's only one eligible right

(23:53):
now to make it. Uh. And then coming out of
the East, you know, there's what fans can can travel
for Matt and so you're you know, I was talking
to somebody there in your market today about getting to
the game. And you know who you're gonna who you're
going to root for. That's the challenge of this. If
you don't have a dog in the fight, who you're
going for, right, And so that's always a challenge when
it comes to these neutral, neutral sin games.

Speaker 6 (24:16):
So Todd talking about this game, you know, Steve and
I were talking to you know, Tucson's never had a
league championship game like this outside of you know, minor
league baseball. When you know, the team got into the
championship series. So this is a first for Tucson. You know,
what do you want? How do you want the fans
to see that? I mean, how important do you think

(24:36):
that should be to the fans to come and be
a part of, you know, a league championship.

Speaker 2 (24:41):
I know it's not the NBA, it's not the NFL.

Speaker 6 (24:43):
But it's it's a major league, UH sporting event and
it's in Tucson, Arizona. I mean, that's one of our
selling points, is it not?

Speaker 7 (24:53):
It is? It's it's not only fans, it's it's the
city of Tucson. You know, you want nice things, You're
you're getting one. This is a big entertainment events. It's
live on CBS Sports once again. And you know the downtown.
That was one of them. Another traction when I looked
at different places, came into the Tucson and visiting. You
guys got a beautiful downtown. Everything's down there. You know,

(25:16):
come downtown, support your downtown restaurants, come to the tailgate,
come to the game, enjoy a night out and see
what see what you've been missing, because you know, I
got a feeling that a lot of people have not
checked out a Sugar Skull game, that they can come
and check this out and see what we're all about.

Speaker 6 (25:33):
And at one point I want to make sure that
we make is we're doing everything we can to make
that tailgate party an indoor tailgate party, right, just so.

Speaker 2 (25:42):
People know that.

Speaker 7 (25:44):
I hear it's hot in August, so yes, we are
having nothing indoors.

Speaker 2 (25:49):
Well, no, Vegas is no different.

Speaker 3 (25:51):
I mean, and that's when you did it there, right,
How did you kind to look there with the hotel
or something?

Speaker 6 (25:56):
You know?

Speaker 7 (25:57):
We did and the last two years we had to
the kickoff in Vegas was one o'clock and so it
was a little cooler at eleven instead of one hundred
and twenty. It was only one hundred and ten cooler, right,
But that wasn't well attended. The first year we had
a big shebang. The second year, I think it reigned.

(26:17):
In the third year, we're like, yeah, we uh, we're
probably probably not gonna have this, and so we did.

Speaker 3 (26:22):
So so let me ask you in the NFL, we
know this, right, it's a big to do with the
Super Bowl, and this is kind of the equivalent, right
of that for the league.

Speaker 2 (26:30):
But but it's more a lot of it's corporate.

Speaker 3 (26:32):
A lot of the people, not even the fans, are
able to go because they can't afford a ticket. Is
there some corporate deal here with you know, maybe the
owners of some of the other places coming in and
and is that kind of part of it as well
as you're trying to sell tickets to people to come
and see the game.

Speaker 14 (26:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (26:50):
Absolutely, I mean it's we we've got a lot of
league league people coming in and you know, but but
really it's once again, it's for the community. It's a
community event. We've got to it's low seventeen dollars and
you know, so so come out and get entertained, and
at some point a football game is going to kick
out or kickoff, and you know, we're doing some things
with your your local flag football program and your local

(27:13):
cheer cheer program and and you know we're trying to
get the support of the community. Come on, check it out,
and you know, just make this a big community event.

Speaker 6 (27:23):
You know, I talked to our coach here from the
Sugars called Billy back, and they said, okay, Billy, how
big a.

Speaker 2 (27:29):
Deal is it to you?

Speaker 6 (27:31):
You know, how much is it putting pressure on you
or is it just something you hang out there in
front of the guys that you've got this championship game
for here in Tucson for two more years to do what.

Speaker 2 (27:41):
You can to get in this game.

Speaker 7 (27:46):
Yeah, you would think it's a big incentive. And I
think a lot of times, you know, you keep preferring
to the NFL that that you know they they do
that too, where you know it's a big deal if
that team can make the that team can make the
championship and it's on their home turf, it's definitely an incentive.

Speaker 3 (28:02):
I'm curious how long have you been the commissioner, how
long have you been participating in the league, and do
you you must like where it's.

Speaker 7 (28:09):
Going, you know, I've twenty five years I've been involved
in indoor football. I started as a player. I played
for five years for the super Ball Storm, and then
I coached for him for four years, and then in
two thousand and nine I bought them. I built a
big gym business and supplement business, and I bought it
to use it as a marketing and entertainment arm and
ran that thing for ten years. Twenty nineteen, we knocked

(28:32):
off the undefeated rattlers and won our seventh championship and
looked at my wife. I was like, hey, let's let's
get out of this. I got active, active kids also,
and I got out. I was out for about a
week and I got recruited into the commission commissioner position.
And so I've been the acting commissioner since twenty nineteen.
So I'm in my six sixth season. So I've seen

(28:53):
it from a lot of different directions, and it's been
twenty five years in this industry.

Speaker 3 (28:57):
Wait, wait, so let me take go back about a minute.
It Uh so you beat Kevin guy and you're still friends, still.

Speaker 2 (29:03):
Friends with you?

Speaker 6 (29:04):
You know.

Speaker 7 (29:06):
The great thing about Kevin is uh, I mean, I
don't know if I've ever met a more emotional guy. Yes,
you know, but but he's also loyal and he is
a great dude. You know, but you know where he stands. Yes,
That's what I love about the guy is whether it's
good or bad, you know what he's thinking, you know
how he's feeling, and uh, you know, he is an intense, emotional,

(29:30):
great dude.

Speaker 3 (29:31):
So well, since that time, you must be the guy
who hands him the trophy, right, So I'm sure a
number he's won it how many times?

Speaker 2 (29:37):
Then he won it last year the defending champs. Yeah,
so you kind of you know he that's what he
strives for.

Speaker 6 (29:43):
So Todd, let's talk a a little bit about the
playoffs they get underway to tomorrow, right, you got a
game tomorrow too on Sunday, and then the Rattlers on
Monday night. Let's first talk about the Rattlers because this
is a chance for a team in Arizona just up
the road to make its way over here. Kevin and
his team are the defending champs. They're going to be

(30:05):
playing San Diego for the third time in four weeks.
But maybe it's an opportunity for fans here to go
up there and check out a game. It's a Glendale Arena,
which is a great a great facility, a great venue,
and they've got a they've got a really good program
going on up there.

Speaker 7 (30:20):
Rattlers are the standard. They do everything first class. Ron
Shirts does an outstanding job of providing the resources for
coach guy to put on a first class show. And yeah,
if you guys haven't checked a game out and go
up and check out the Rattlers is they do an
outstanding job, and they're playing the strike Force. It is

(30:41):
their third game. And in the last four weeks last weekend,
I don't you know, they there wasn't real incentive to
to play. I think everyone was just trying to get
through that game not to get hurt. But you know,
the one thing about coach Guy is he and last
year is a perfect example. He got hot late. I mean,
you want to be playing your best football come playoff time.
And he kind of limped back doored his way into

(31:02):
the playoffs and he figured out how to get hot,
and uh, you know, they just kind of kept getting
better each round. And that's you know, that's the true
mark of a champion, is how to get your team
to peak at the right time. And right now is
the right time.

Speaker 6 (31:15):
Well, and and you look at the teams that are
in that are in the playoffs this year. You've got
uh you got your Bay Area up and you know
up there that's the number one seed in the West.

Speaker 2 (31:24):
They're really good. And we've seen them. Vegas is in it.

Speaker 6 (31:28):
Uh we saw them here a few weeks ago in
Tucson with a former Arizona quarterback, Jayden de Laura.

Speaker 2 (31:35):
So I mean there's some there should be some excitement
behind all of this.

Speaker 7 (31:39):
Hey that that game Sunday at Sunday night at seven,
it will would be five o'clock Pacific time. Vegas app
of Bay Area. That's that's going to be a game
to watch. I think Vegas is one of the hotter
teams going into the playoffs. You got Bay Areas the
one seed. That's one to keep an eye on.

Speaker 2 (31:56):
How has the game changed?

Speaker 3 (31:57):
You said you played it twenty five years ago, more
exciting or different in any way?

Speaker 7 (32:04):
You know, we've we've trended more towards the outdoor game
from a rule set standpoint. It's funny because twenty years ago,
the rule set was designed to score points, and as
the game of football, outdoor football has.

Speaker 2 (32:19):
Evolved, that has evolved.

Speaker 7 (32:20):
Into a way a game that they want to score points.
And so the last few years we've transitioned a lot
of our rules, which you know, restricted the offense, i'm sorry,
the defense in a lot of ways and made the
game kind of confusing for the fan and it was
tough to the official a call because it kind of
had all these boopy rules. And so we've we've gotten
rid of most of them to where it's pretty much

(32:43):
like the outdoor game but played indoors. You know, So
that's that's the way it's it's changed our league in general.
The talent level continues to rise. You know, back when
I was playing, it was considered like a D two league,
and now we're we're about a high D one level,
and so the talent is really a pressive and that's
definitely a different part of the game right now.

Speaker 2 (33:03):
All right, so, uh, I almost called to you, Kevin,
sorry about that. Uh.

Speaker 6 (33:07):
Tots you know, for fans who want to get tickets
right now, who want to start thinking about getting tickets
right now to the game on the.

Speaker 2 (33:13):
Twenty third, where do they go?

Speaker 7 (33:16):
H i f L National Championship dot com is the site,
or you can go to the IFL website, which is
go i f L dot com. We we've got them
live on there. And and you know, we're just starting
a lot of our digital marketing pushes and our advertising
uh is getting uh starting to come out this next week,
and you know, we're we're really making a push here

(33:38):
over the next three weeks to uh, you know, to
get about some of the seats because you know, when
you're live on CBS Sports, you know, city of Tucson,
you don't want it to show that you're you're you're
not showing up for your city. And and so we, uh,
we're giving every incentive for people to get there, from
pricing to activities to the show we're gonna put on.
It's gonna be a mussy event.

Speaker 2 (34:00):
I'm assuming that there's gonna be plenty of merch and
all that stuff.

Speaker 7 (34:04):
Oh yeah, I mean we have the typical championship stuff,
championship flavor that will be going on around the concourse there,
and uh, you know, yeah, it's it's a different It's
we've got our own championship field that we lay out,
so if you have been to a Tucson game, it's
a different look. It'll be your venue, but it's a
different look. Uh. You know, we spent all week decorating
the field and getting things ready and getting it you know,

(34:26):
for for live TV and for a national championship feel,
and and you know, so it's one of those things
that if you're not in attendance and you're just watching
it on uh on TV, it's it just isn't the same.
You've got to get there because you can you can
hear the hitting and you can hear the talking, and
it's just an environment that that you've got to be
there in person to experience it.

Speaker 3 (34:46):
Okay, well, Todd, we appreciate your time. We'll probably talk
to you as we get closer to the event. Uh
just what three weeks away? Yeah, pretty much. Uh, enjoy
your time watching other games. I'm sure you're going to
be on the road watching some games or maybe watching
somewhere right.

Speaker 7 (35:01):
Next weekend, I hit both conference championship games. So it's
the way we laid out the schedule. The East is
on Saturday, the West is on Sunday. Uh, so I'm
able to hit both of them and can give out
the conference championship to uh, to each deserving team. Uh
So this weekend, though, I watch him on on TV
because the next couple of weekends they'll be traveling.

Speaker 6 (35:22):
Thanks to to Thanks a whole bunch appreciated, and I'm
sure we'll be talking this week.

Speaker 7 (35:25):
Thank you, looking forward to it. Have a great weekend, you.

Speaker 2 (35:29):
Too, Thank you very much.

Speaker 3 (35:30):
I was going to say something, he looks like killing
guy's brother.

Speaker 2 (35:35):
Only because neither only because he didn't have any hair.
That's it, That's all it is.

Speaker 6 (35:39):
Yeah, But he's a former yeah, player, I didn't know
he was a quarterback. Yeah, I mean I presumed he
was a player. But like you, I mean, you know,
he's a big dude. And uh and uh, I mean
you know, I think he doesn't look like You're right,
he looks like a linebacker.

Speaker 2 (35:53):
He doesn't. But uh, you know, he a good guy.

Speaker 6 (35:56):
Been dealing with him for for several weeks now, you know,
working on this and uh, you know what he like,
Kevin really passionate about the league and and well and
what a deal it is.

Speaker 3 (36:07):
I'm hopeful for you and for the group and for everybody.
Tucson needs to show up.

Speaker 2 (36:12):
It does it really don't. We talk about all the time.
And look, and I get it.

Speaker 6 (36:16):
You know Kevin and Kathy, you know they're from Phoenix
and that there's a lot of Tucson people involved in this.
Ali Farhaning is a is a part owner of the team.
There's a lot of sponsors here involved and they're gonna
be involved in the championship game.

Speaker 2 (36:30):
The staff is local.

Speaker 3 (36:31):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (36:33):
You know a few of the people Yasmin Lopez and
and Crystal Soto. Crystal she's the she does some of
the u A you know, announcing promotional stuff. Uh, the
the two of them, and then a guy that I'm
I work with. His name is Mitch Little up and
up in Phoenix. But it's all these local people and
and even you know, even though the ownership is from
out of town there, they really tried to embed themselves here.

(36:56):
You know, Kevin and Cathy's daughter went to the U
of A. And and their kid, Cody, is on his
way to being a quarterback in Colorado. So there they love.
You know, they talk about how much they love Tisana.
They want this thing to work, not just for them financially,
but for the city. And you know, we do have
to show out.

Speaker 3 (37:16):
No, no, we talk about it all the time. If
you want it, prove that you want it right and
go get it. Yeah, Okay, let's take a break, come back,
maybe take some calls. You're an Arizona men's basketball fan.

Speaker 2 (41:56):
Did you say that?

Speaker 6 (41:57):
There was a It's completely off topic, but there was
a you know, the the Astro signed one of the
signed back one of the cheaters, Carlos Carreo, And so
there's somebody put out a thing of the like the
the cold play shot of Carlos, Korea Correa and jose
L two. They're saying, cheaters back together again.

Speaker 2 (42:18):
I'm sure that looks pretty. I'm sure had to be
in the front. It was in the front and and
and Carre was holding his breast. Did you uh the
shocker thing, the shocker thing that he had on? Yeah? Yeah,
yeah yeah. Did you already text your boy Francisco and
say no, no, I you know, I can't. I can't.

Speaker 6 (42:39):
I can't do that to Francisco just too damn nice,
you know, like like Ray over here, I'll give them
all kinds of crap, you know, when he's here, all
kinds of crap about the Giants. But Francisco is just
such a nice guy. Plus a lot of times I
sit next to him at the football you know, basketball sometimes.

Speaker 2 (42:55):
Are not anymore? Yeah, not well anymore, but I used to.
But I can't. But I don't know. If if he
were a guest while I'm on here again, I probably would. Okay, Houston,
I see any good? Are they in the hunt? I don't.
I don't even know that. I don't even know. They
must trying to chase something.

Speaker 6 (43:13):
Well, yeah, because they're getting some guys, so they're they're
trying to stay in and whatever, you know, in whatever
way they are.

Speaker 2 (43:19):
You said this last week up you don't think the
Dodgers gonna win it.

Speaker 6 (43:23):
Well, I just don't think that, you know, unless something
happens with their pitch and it gets a whole ton better.
I don't see how they you know, who's the team.
Who's the team? It could be anybody. I mean, you know,
Philadelphia beat the hell out of the Dodgers. The Brewers
beat the Dodgers six times?

Speaker 2 (43:41):
Is that another analysis? They're good, but not good, but
they could be good today.

Speaker 6 (43:46):
You know, the Brewers beat the Dodgers, you know, six
times in a in a two week period, you know,
And it's those kinds of things that tell me that
you know they're gonna they can run into a team
on a you know, in a three or five game
series and it's just, you know, they just don't have it.
He traded away Dustin May, who I love the guy.
He's got incredible stuff. He throws pitches that you go,

(44:10):
how can somebody throw those pitches? But from a results standpoint,
he's been incredibly mediocre. And he'll he'll he'll be like
he'll strike out six guys in a row and then
he'll give up back to back to back home runs,
you know that kind of thing, and so he never
sustains even within a game.

Speaker 2 (44:28):
You know what what he can do?

Speaker 3 (44:29):
Did you can see I didn't know this was happening.
The weekend baseball game in Tennessee.

Speaker 2 (44:37):
At a racetrack.

Speaker 6 (44:38):
Racetrack people, Yeah, they said they had they had sold
eighty four thousand tickets as of yesterday. The Reds and
who hell, you're asking the ass in the first place
in the in the AL to four and a half
games up.

Speaker 2 (44:57):
It makes total sense. But I don't think there's anybody
in particular.

Speaker 6 (45:01):
It's just that I don't think that the pitching can
hold up over the course of a series against a
really good team. They'll win their division, you know, but
you know, they get into a series against a really
good team, I just don't. I just don't if they
have the pitching to handle that. Watch now they're going

(45:23):
to go win it? Because I said that.

Speaker 19 (45:25):
Yeah, anybody want to bet better than the odds are terrible?
You know, they're still the favorite by a lot plus
three hundred. Yeah, but I mean they're favored by a lot.
It's like they're you know, I'll look it up. It's
like they're plus plus three hundred and then the next
one is like twelve hundred or something like that. Yeah,
then that's not worth betting.

Speaker 2 (45:45):
Yeah. Yeah, so you know.

Speaker 6 (45:49):
They're plus two eighty five, and then you got the
Phillies at plus eight hundred and the Tigers at plus
eight hundred, Yankees plus eight fifty.

Speaker 2 (45:56):
So yeah, for the World.

Speaker 6 (45:59):
Series, Detroit fell off. Yeah, yeah, you know, so I
I don't know, Okay, last year was was magical. I
mean it really was.

Speaker 2 (46:10):
I mean they should have lost to San.

Speaker 6 (46:12):
Diego and they did it, and then they beat then
they beat the Mats, you know, and the Mets and
then the Holy the Yankees lost that series as much
as the Dodgers won that series.

Speaker 2 (46:24):
Yeah, with Game five. So I don't know.

Speaker 6 (46:28):
Look, I'm gonna go into the playoffs expecting the worst
and see if we get the best.

Speaker 2 (46:32):
You're a Wildcat fan, that's pretty much the standard, exactly, exactly,
that's your future.

Speaker 4 (46:39):
Yeah, I got nothing to add in my diamond back.
You had all the basketball shirt, You're still you threw
it through always always because when that unicorn hits unicorn.

Speaker 2 (46:51):
Exactly, man, we're gonna say.

Speaker 4 (46:55):
We knew it, we knew it was gonna Speaking of,
we had that conversation I think Monday about would you
rather see a second So yeah, so question for you
real quick, Okay, I put it out on social media.
What would you rather see as an Arizona fan? First
a second basketball national championship, the first football national championship,

(47:16):
or something else like like a first Rose Bowl, a
women's national championship of basketball, even a volleyball one, well baseball.

Speaker 6 (47:24):
Understanding that the Rose Bowl because of just the logistics
of the playoff and is a not likelihood like Arizona
can win a national championship and not go to the
Rose Bowl.

Speaker 2 (47:37):
I mean, I'd rather go to a rose Ball.

Speaker 6 (47:39):
But if you're saying basketball national championship versus a football
football and a heartbeat, you know what, Arizona's got its
national championship. Let's go win a football one. You know,
would it be great if would the Rose Bowl cop
to play Rose bl will at best be a a

(47:59):
semi final Okay, yeah, so if you played in the
Rose Bowl for a championship, that would be yeah.

Speaker 2 (48:03):
Well, I think the Rose Bub will always be a
semi final game. Give me, give me, I didn't I
ask this who was with us? Was it Blake or
somebody else? What would be the odds?

Speaker 3 (48:12):
Oh? No, are they would they would they win the
national championship in twenty years six in your lifetime football?

Speaker 2 (48:19):
Yeah? No, I was gonna give it to your ninety.

Speaker 6 (48:22):
You know, I'm uh you know, I mean, I don't
think it's out of the question that they can get
to a playoff. You know, I can, you can get
to a playoff. Look if Ace you can get to
a playoff. Indiana can get to a playoff, Arizona can
get to a play Yeah, all right, at least they
give you hope. Okay, But in the end, you know,
it's Ohio State, it's Texas, it's I don't even put

(48:43):
Michigan up there with them, you know, Alabama, Georgia, you know.

Speaker 2 (48:47):
Okay, okay, So one of those four teams.

Speaker 6 (48:49):
Will always be right there, one of the four right now,
Maybe somebody comes along and you know, upsets them or whatever,
but ye're in year out. Yeah, you're gonna put those
four teams is most likely to get into the National
champion Board.

Speaker 3 (49:05):
To win the national would be silly if you didn't Okay,
what about basketball? If I give you ten years, win
a title?

Speaker 2 (49:11):
Yes, yes, yes? Two? Two?

Speaker 8 (49:16):
What did you?

Speaker 17 (49:16):
What do you do?

Speaker 2 (49:21):
Why are you you know?

Speaker 3 (49:22):
You're sixty five? You're sixty five, and they won one
back to back. The last time they did you were
thirty eight, you were thirty eight? Okay, what else do
you put for you? Tom's gonna win one? What did
I say in ten years? I think so Tom's gonna

(49:42):
win one. I don't doubt that.

Speaker 2 (49:45):
What am I gonna say? I don't doubt that, man,
Tom's gonna win one and it and it will be
within ten years. Okay, okay, let's go to the phones. Hello,
you're in the air. Nine on the ball. He does
local j exactly, don what's up? Two years?

Speaker 1 (50:09):
No?

Speaker 14 (50:09):
Ten?

Speaker 3 (50:10):
Ten?

Speaker 2 (50:10):
Ten?

Speaker 7 (50:12):
Well? What was the two in that ten joke?

Speaker 2 (50:15):
And I said they'll win two in ten years? Start locally?

Speaker 7 (50:19):
Still learning.

Speaker 20 (50:21):
This guy's still learning how to be a head coach.
And and I will never forget him pining for it
for that Kansas job after they were there for the
Kansas Senior Day.

Speaker 2 (50:34):
No, no, no, I don't he was.

Speaker 19 (50:37):
He was.

Speaker 2 (50:39):
No way, he wasn't done, No way he was he was.

Speaker 20 (50:41):
Oh man, those Kansas fans are great, They're awesome.

Speaker 3 (50:46):
If my girlfriend doesn't do for me, I'm gonna find
a different one. That's what he was saying that. I don't,
are you reading too much into it?

Speaker 2 (50:52):
Come on, don how long have you been married or
are you married? I am married, and let's see this year.

Speaker 20 (51:00):
I'll tell you when I got No, I'm not going
to tell that story because that one says, in.

Speaker 6 (51:04):
Your years that you've been married, you've never seen like
a hot woman at the mall and just looked at
that and said, that's pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (51:14):
Don't do it. Don't do it? Well, sure, that's kind
of just kind of that's kind of it.

Speaker 20 (51:19):
Yeah, yeah, sure, But winning the national championship would be
like getting a getting a day pass and going and
chasing after that hot woman at the mall. Then that's
a little bit much. I think that, Uh, there's some

(51:45):
growing into big boy pants that needs to get done.

Speaker 7 (51:47):
In today's basketball, and I don't I don't know that.

Speaker 20 (51:51):
Well, well we'll just we'll just have to wait and see.

Speaker 2 (51:54):
But I think on that one, I believe he's doing
that though.

Speaker 6 (51:57):
I think I believe he's learning lessons every year in
your you're correct, he's got some growing up to do
as a coach.

Speaker 2 (52:03):
He's been a head coach for four years, four years,
no doubt, no doubt.

Speaker 6 (52:08):
But the growth that I see year to year to
year tells me that it's not that too far in
the future that he's a good enough coach to win
a national champion.

Speaker 3 (52:18):
Well, the door, the door that needs to be broken
right now is the funnel for right it has to
be broken so soon, Yes, the next couple of years.

Speaker 20 (52:27):
Well, that has to happen really fast, because you know,
Bill self got those stints put in, and that Kansas
job is going to be open here pretty soon.

Speaker 6 (52:38):
But okay, but do you think Kansas would hire a
coach who's not even gotten to.

Speaker 2 (52:43):
A Final four?

Speaker 20 (52:46):
Everybody high on Tommy Lloyd. Everybody's so oh man, he's
won one hundred games in his first four years, and
he seems to be a darling.

Speaker 7 (52:56):
That that I.

Speaker 20 (53:00):
They could get him cheap compared to other people that
would have to other people that would take that job. Well,
let me don't know that they have any alumni that
could take that job. So they'd have to go get
they'd have to go get a name coach, and you know,
why would you not take an SEC job.

Speaker 2 (53:21):
For a big twelve jobs.

Speaker 3 (53:22):
Okay, even though yeah, no, I kind of agree with you.
In fact, I don't think that Bill self is gonna
last there much love. He hasn't had a great last
two three years because you know that he's fallen short
a few times and got beat in the first round
of this last year now with the stants, but we
got to go. We already up against the time at
the end of Thanks done for calling in, has always
done and he is local to answer your question.

Speaker 20 (53:45):
Hey, don't don't skip that medication, Jason. He's gotta steak,
he's gotta stay consistent.

Speaker 7 (53:54):
Have a good guy.

Speaker 2 (53:55):
It's gonna break
