Streaming live on the iHeartRadio. Thisis I on the Ball with Steve Rivera
and Jay Gonzalez on Fox Sports fourteenfifty. Hey, welcome back to my
Iying the Ball hero Fox Sports fourteenfifty. I'm Steve, He's Jake.
Now we have one with breaking news. This is I on the Ball,
Breaking news on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Happy Friday to everyone out there.

(00:26):
From yours truly, mister Greedy twoshoes, starting off breaking news with an
official announcement today from Churchill's Downs, you have the suspension of Bob trainer Bob
Baffort because he indirectly back handedly saidyeah, I was at Boult. Yeah,

(00:47):
he accept the responsibility, I think, and that's yeah, that's and
that's yeah. Yeah, and threeyears is enough. And he wanted to
get back. He wants to getback. They want, you know what
they wanted. Sure it helps,it helped, come on, yeah,
you know, I mean even ifyou're a good guy, if you're a
bad guy. But he's needed,he's needed in the racing profession, right

(01:07):
right, you know, it dependswhat side you're on. Sure, And
and the thing about think of itis is that you know what happened is
clearly. I mean it could havebeen you know, could have been cheating,
could have been an accident, couldhave been a lot of different things.
You know. The thing of itis, okay, let's move past,
you know, and and and geton with it and both will be
better for it. Exactly exactly whereI was going with that. So,

(01:32):
yeah, you were that was goodfor him, and he's not going to
hold a grudge over any I thinkhe has a lot of jade. Dude,
all right going to college football.Utah State as official announced today that
they have fired Blake Anderson. Doyou could you do you know the circumstances?
Can you talk of the circumstances? So I believe in April of twenty

(01:55):
twenty three, it says right here, yeah, there was a a player
was arrested, dude, alleged domesticuh, and before instead of going straight
to university officials and reporting it,he tried to investigated finding mission right right,
So so I don't know the circumstanceswith stuff that happened at Baylor.

(02:15):
Uh, the guys shooting teammate, shooting another and I forget Bliss day Bliss
Bliss and there's other things that hewas trying to figure it out. And
right, so, so I didn'tknow this. I thought that the coach
had got in trouble, but itwas a player. I guess you got
to let the authorities handle the business, right, Yes, I mean,

(02:38):
Look, most schools and and largelybecause of what happened at Baylor, you
know, the title stuff and allthat, put policies and rules in place
to say very specific if something happens. Look in Arizona went through this with
a bunch of you know, abunch of you know, player things and
stuff that they didn't feel got handledproperly. They put rules in place that

(03:00):
say, if something happens, particularlya domestic abuse situation, you report it
and that's it, and you letauthorities handle it. And what I read
on what he did was he wentand he spoke to the alleged victim and
spoke to the roommate and try andwe'll try to figure it out before he

(03:22):
said anything to the school. Andthat's a big giant fat no. No,
Well, let me tell you somethinghere. And I don't know the
circumstances right now on the top ofmy head without googling it. With the
track coach here with the burden thathow that turned out big, a big,
big mess. It was a bigmess. And then and then the
Orlando h Bloom the actor, Yeahis the actor of Orlando? Yeah,

(03:47):
that guy, yeah Brown, Yeah, Yeah, we know what you're talking
about. Okay, you know,uh, you know all all those things.
Those rules are there for a reason, and now it's to make and
that's to make sure to maintain theintegrity of the investigation because the lives are
at stake, life of the victim, live of the person that's being accused.

(04:09):
You want to make sure that thatgets handled properly in case something didn't
happen. Right, the whole Dukelacrosse team thing, right, So a
coach is not supposed to go dothat, right, that's not his right.
That's yeah, exactly, that's nothis So he yeah, so he's
fired, so and and and youknow what, he's already gonna he's gonna

(04:30):
sue because that it's all alive. The investigation. They called it a sham
investigation that they just wanted to getrid of him, and so that that's
why they did what they did.But dude, you know, it's very
simple. Somebody tells you they're beingabused by one of your players, you
go straight to the You go straightto whatever you know is in your policy,

(04:53):
whoever it is that you go to, whether it's campus police or somebody
in in the department or whatever, human resources, not probably even human resources,
because it's an athlete somewhere, theyhave there's a policy laid out and
they have enough resources. Nowadays there'sa political or you're supposed to do that,

(05:13):
and he clearly did not do that. You know, I've been here
a long time. You've been herea long time that that has happened before.
Of course it has proof time.Yeah, you know, and you
can't do that, especially now withall the social media and stuff. Stuff
is gonna get out. Stuff getsout. So anyways, so he's fire

(05:34):
bummer free him. Yeah, justwhat, He'll land somewhere. So he's
a good coach, He'll land somewhere. Assistant to the NFL. Troy Aikman,
former NFL player, Uh, whatare you talking about? Hall of
Famer Dallas Cowboys, one of Steve'sboys. Back when I cared, Yeah,

(05:56):
what I cared? He submitted abid for a trademark on the use
of the number eight, and nowLamar Jackson is disputing it, but it
has potential to go to court. You si the number eight? Yeah,
yeah, I saw that. TroyAikman has the word eight right now on
some of his luggage and he postsabout it sometimes and people recognize it.
But Lamar Jackson wants to take thenumber eight for himself because he's a current

(06:20):
right now himself as a trademark. He wants to do it too. Oh
is the Finders keepers? I don'tknow. I was here long before you,
son. I was number twelve,So I have no problem issue with
the number eight. What you doabout nothing? Did you have a number?
Yeah? Thirteen? Like thirteen. It's thirteen was a unlucky lucky number

(06:42):
for me. But well I lovethirteen and a lot of different things.
My brother, Yeah, my brotherje g Yeah, yeah, I'm sure
he wins a lot. Yeah hedoes well, luckily, come on you
you've told me stuff that he betslike ten teen parties and doesn't know what
he's doing and he hits it.Oh that's right, No, you said
maybe maybe maybe. No Jeans Jean'sthat guy. Yeah, thirteen is like,

(07:05):
isn't it isn't? It is inhis email address yeah, so the
thirteen whatever. Hopefully Lamar Jackson won'thave any grudge against sticking with the Ravens
and the NFL. The Ravens havesigned former Bears safety Eddie Jackson, a
two time Pro Bowler. M H. Seems like they're just trying to get

(07:27):
as much help as they can.Yeah, they need help, especially on
the defense. I mean again, they keep having these great seasons and then
they poopy. No worries, allright? Yeah so yeah, all right,
good for them, Good for him. He finally he's stuck with the
team, sticking in the NFL.Former Dolphins and Cardinals running backing On Drake

(07:48):
announced his retirement today. Oh wow, I didn't who Yeah he was.
He had that miracle play against thePatriots, I believe. But I'm trying
to what college do you go to? Alabama? Alabama? Yeah? Bowl?
He had that kickoff with big kickoffin the first Clemson game for Alabama.

(08:11):
All right, so he had eightyears. I was gonna say it
wasn't around that long eight years, but again, running backs, man,
that's it. Eight years is probablypretty good. Yeah. Yeah, and
he stayed healthy for most of it. Yeah, yeah, all right,
going to college football Alabama is namingtheir field after recently retired head coaching Sabin

(08:33):
Field at Bryan Denny Stadium. Yeah, they put a video out on that.
It was kind of cool, youknow, you know, he's really
taking on a whole new persona. He's become likable. He's funny. Imagine
what pretty dang smart she's got.He wasn't he's not are Did he come

(08:54):
up as cranky? Yes, cranky, cranky, cranky, cranky? I
don't know, maybe cranky. Hewas cranky, but he's now all legitimately
all the best, all time college. Even his wife thought he was cranky.
He did an interview and I can'tremember I heard the clip and I
remember who if it was with,if it was with, whoever it was,
But he said he realized he wascranky when his wife told him he

(09:16):
was cranky. I think so wherehis wife said, you really need to
pay attention to what you sound like, because you sound like you're mad all
the time. Wait wait, letme transition here, Gab, if you're
listening, give us a call.Jays sound cranky, because see Jason cranky
sometimes on Fridays. What are youtalking about Today's Friday? He was telling
us, Like he said, heonly brings up brings. You're not gab

(09:43):
call us pleasant, dude, you'retrying to rusty sometimes. Okay, okay,
Well, all I know is thatthere's a video out there saving he's
up like forty nine against some Visionthree school and he's put it to him
he could, so he called thetime out because the defense got the coverage

(10:05):
wrong. Up forty nine nothing withlike ten seconds left, so and they
got him, but he got him. So yeah, crank cranky wins.
But he's yeah, no, itdoes. We talked about that too.
That's why Mochi is who she whoshe is. There's the reason why they're
good coaches. I think people aregonna like him as a as a he

(10:26):
got really because he has been one. He's really damn smart. Yeah right,
and he and he tells good story. There's a reason he was you
know, he won because he heknew how to coach. And I'm talking
x's and o's kind of stopped, right, and so it's going to be
interesting to see. And if youplayed for him, come on, if
you played for him, aren't yougonna bust your assh? Yeah, because
you don't want to disappoint him, right, and that's half the battle,
because he'll kill you or yeah oryeah. That's why he played tough for

(10:50):
him and Mochi too. You maynot respect you, but you played hard
for me because you know that she'sthere to help you. As cranky as
he is. Like you said,he is opening up Song Sports Center.
He was at the media days forthe SEC and the anchor got him to
say, go dogs. Oh wow. Interesting. I mean, I didn't
think he'd ever say anything than rolltie. But here we are dogs,

(11:15):
I guess. To the Arizona SoftballNews incoming Arizona freshman Emma Cavanon, I
don't know how to say the lasttime. I'm sorry, I'm betraying this
really wrong. She was named thenfc A high School Catcher of the Year
and they got a catcher coming fromWashington. Yeah, from Washington. So

(11:37):
interesting? The future? Yeah, okay, all right? Uh, last
thing I got. Like I said, I like to end on some fun
stuff. There's an image of killingClark that's on the hood of a race
car. The for that the brickyardfor NASCAR. Wow wow, have you

(11:58):
ever had your face on the couldhave a NASCAR car? I've never had
my face on a Wow, that'scool. We're here on radio for a
reason. I know, Steve,I do know that I do, I
do. I am very well.I'm shameful that you put us on a
logo, that we have our logowith our faces on it, exactly.

(12:18):
Okay, all right, that's it, okay. US Open News. A
lot of big names did not makethe cut. The most prominent at the
most prominent those Rory McElroy was heI think eleven over par so he I
watched him butcher his his round,Tiger Woods fourteen over party shot seventy nine,

(12:43):
seventy seven. He's out. TheUS Open champ Price and the Shambo
didn't make the cut. Doctor Hovlindid not make the cut. Tony Fenow
did not make the cut. Mypick of the week, Tommy Fleetwood did
not make the cut. I'm reallypissed it in I've got a grudge probably
for about a month against him.A lot, I mean a lot of

(13:07):
big names. Shane Lowry, whowas I think the twenty nineteen champ is
in the lead. Not many bignames up there. Justin Rose is up
there, of course, Scotti schefferdHe's tied for fourth, Jason Day is
up, There's Andrew Shoffley's up there. Man, they've the conditions they've been
playing in. It was like thirtyfive mile an hour Windnesday. They were

(13:28):
just whipping and there were there werethe winds were so strong that balls sitting
on the green were moving. Wow. It was I mean it was crazy.
But uh Rory McElroy had a stretchof three holes where he went five
over the guy who won last week, Robert McIntyre, Scottish Dude won the

(13:50):
Scottish Open. He opened his firstfour holes he had a seven and an
eight. I saw a guy takingeight on a part three. Uh,
what's his name? Neeman? Ican't remember his last day. He took
an eight on the part He tooka five eight on the party. I
could have played that whole better thanthat. I could have. I could
have. I'm not saying I wouldhave, but I could bocking Neeman.

(14:13):
He took an eight on a partthree. I don't know if he made
the cut, but it was therewas some tough going out there. I
think Justin Thomas, who was amongthe leaders going in, he shot forty
five on the front nine, whichis a crazy number. So and on
his way to was seventy eight today. So man, some crazy stuff going
on. It's a tough, toughconditions. Oh look, I'm just looking

(14:37):
at steal. Phil Mickelson did makethe cut. He got in. He
got in there, so crazy tournamentshould be fun. Okay, So now
we're gonna go to break and geta hold of wrestling. Guy wrestling guru,
mister Tom Ortiz, sort of SunnySunnyside High School ASU wrestler, ASU
coach. I think he's in theNational College Fame of Wrestling. I think

(15:01):
it was a three time All American, That's what I read. Now he's
coaching in Phoenix, yep, butso our high school. So now he's
bringing a camp here with a bigname. Yeah, big name, right,

welcome back to I'm the Ball hereon Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm
Steve he j We got along withus and now we have Tom Mortise,
wrestling coach extraordinaire, wrestling legend, maning legend from Sunnyside. And I'll say

(19:14):
this hurts to say, but Asu, I get it that there was no
wrestling program in Tucson for you.So we're okay with that. And then
a coach over there. So longhistory in wrestling, Tom, How are
you doing? Yeah? I havea long history in wrestling and it plays
into MMA. I'm doing great.I always tell people I'm a legend in
my own mind. So that's whatyou think about yourself. That count?

(19:36):
Sure? Sure, nobody let metell you Jay's he does all these great
events and he's gonna have one herein two weeks and we'll talk about that.
But he had his. You stillhave your w federation thing here?
You bought some, well, we'llfighting federation. I sold that and then
I fought in it when I wasfifty one. Back in twenty eighteen,

(19:57):
they did a documentary and it's caughtoff. It's on too b you want
to go watch it on It's calledAlho and it's on to Blet. Let
me ask you, was the viejoa little local do? Yeah? You
know, it's just that, youknow, you remember growing up in your
life and you hear different things andpeople say, I regret it, I

(20:18):
didn't box, I regret I anddo this, and people said I had
kids, so I decided to geta job, and I already had all
my kids, all four of them, so I just decided to do a
pro mm a fight and see whathappened. So but if you want to
know what happened, you got towatch Tony an hour and six minutes.
It's good though. Well, well, Tom, you know obviously you know

(20:38):
from a you know, a historicwrestling program in Tucsono over at Sunnyside took
that up to a su You know, we've had we've had their current wrestling
coach on that, you know anumber of times. Every time he wins
the state championship, he comes onthe show. Tell us about it,
Yeah, tell yeah, Tony Leone. As a matter of fact, it's
funny brought up Sunnyside Wrestling. Theyjust had a national champion at Junior Nationals,

(21:03):
the hardest tournament in the world,Fargo. It's called Fargo Nationals,
but it's really Junior Nationals. SergioViega. Okay, he's a he just
won Wow on Sunday. But what'sthe say no, yesterday, Wow the
day before. But he wanted,he want. It's a top tournament and
now he's going to get to wrestleand who's number one? They give you

(21:23):
a go ticket. So he justhe's a national champion and he's good and
he's going to be a senior. But he's already committed to Core. Now
Ivy League kids going to well, isn't that where we're Audrey human is uhumb?

(21:44):
Is that where she was? So? Yes, Tom, what the
heck is in the water at Sunnysidewith all these great wrestlers. I think
it's the dynasty started with Don coachtrack back in the seventies. He ended
up being a coach and haventy fourand that's where it started. I wrestled
for him, and I also wrestledfor Sanchez, and then Richard Sanzees became

(22:07):
the coach and my brother was youknow, wrestled at Sunnyside and his good
friend Joe Romero and so then youhad Eddie Herabano and ZA champion from Sunnyside
and eighty five. I was athree time Model American from Sunnyside and then
then I left Iowa State coach. But Eric Larkin, you know, national

(22:32):
newsa Horges winner. Then you gotRby doing what he did, and then
you had the Gallic brothers from Sunnysidedoing what they did, National champ at
Iowa State and all Americans. SoI just think it's a it's a tradition.
It's now it's like heritage, youknow, like I got to respect
my elders and I got to goget a college degree. So all those

(22:56):
guys I mentioned, they got allit rby just graduated from Penn State so
it's and you got the Rivera Brothersin the Military Academy, and it is
it's going very well for Sunnyside andthe strong community support, and and you
go in there and there's a bunchof eight year olds sattling. Yeah,

(23:17):
well that's it, right, Imean, it's it's become a community.
It's sort of become an identity forthe whole Sunnyside community over there. That
okay, you know, we wrestle, you know. And by the way,
I was corrected. Audrey Humanez isgoing to Lehigh. Yes, he's
going to Lehigh, which is agreat another great school. But yeah,

(23:37):
she's fortunate to go to a universitylike that, but she deserves it.
She was second on the Olympic teamright trials, So so I keep taling
her. She's going to win twentytwenty eight in La there you go.
In four years, she's gonna winthe Olympic champion. And Sunnyside has never
had Olympic champion. So we'll seewho's first. Rby is going in for
Mexico By in twenty twenty four, well, in a couple of weeks.

(24:02):
In a couple of weeks, that'swho he Sai. Yeah, RB y
Rby he's RB White representing Mexico.Okay, that makes sense. No,
cool? Cool? So so let'stalk about what's going on here. In
a couple of weeks, you're you'rehaving your your thing, your thing with
the wrestlers here, and then you'rebeging a big name. Who's the big

(24:22):
name? Oh, it's a samPortio, uh wrestling camps. And then
we got together with Caane Belascas iscoming UFC champion, Uh, you know
All American wrestler for Arizona State Heavyweight. You know, battest man on the
planet, and he's gonna do He'sdoing it for free. He's playing for
his own plane ticket. He justwants to get back to the community and

(24:45):
help the kids and and he knows, you know, the south Side.
You know, we're gonna have itat Pueblo High School on August third,
and it starts at ten am.And I just thought Caine was going to
do with a couple of my otherruss or John Moraga who has fought and
you'll see and Brian Stiff who wrestledfrom me at Arizona State. He's a
two time All American. But thenI saw my name on it. Sammy

(25:10):
put my name on it. Ididn't even know it was one of the
clinicians. You know the hours, the hours along and the page low.
Well, you know, Sammy,he's going to try to get his brother
there. He's got to get hisbrother there. Yeah, for sure.
You know, Sammy's one of mybest friends, and you were like brothers,
and I just he just wants toget back to the kids and and

(25:32):
help the community. Tom as youmeant at that's that you mentioned how there's
sort of a you know, aconnection from going from wrestling to you know,
m m A or UFC fighting whatever. What is that connection? Because
Roman he's doing that too, right, So what why is that sort of
a natural step? Well, Ithink wrestling is a form of martial art,

(25:56):
even though there's no striking. Soif they can learn the striking,
you know, and themy Thai andthe boxing and the jiu jitsu, it's
you can depend You can decide whetheryou want to stand because you can defend
the takedown, or you want togo on the ground because you can go
to a takedown. So it's aneasy transition. Of course, you got

(26:17):
to study some more boxing, Yougot to study more muy Thai. You
got to start a jiu jitsu anda little bit of karate stone in there,
and you know some taekwondo moves thatyou know, it all works together
and I just you know, II would coach six different wrestlers at Arizona
State and they all went to theUFC and fought. So that kind of

(26:37):
mentality is just it's it's combative andyou wrestle, you weigh in once a
week, so it's easy when theMMA is easier than wrestling. Probably wrestling
is a tough, tough gig man. It's some of the best athletes out
there, so you know, andthe question we've asked a couple of guys
that we've had on why and thehell do it? You guys are too

(26:59):
pretty for this? Yeah, Ijust yeah, in the eyes of the
beholder, Yeah, I mean,it's just it's just one time you just
want to test yourself and see ifyou can. You know that most when
it comes to wrestling MMA, sometimesthe hardest opponent is yourself in your mind.

(27:19):
Is you can get your mind straightand get through that match, get
that through that tournament, get throughthe season, get through a fight.
It's only going to help you inlife. Well, hopefully you don't get
hit too much. Well you saidyou did it at fifty one, Yes,
sir, what were you thinking? So what happened was when I left,
I was on a state in nine, I fought a couple of times

(27:41):
and I said, you know,I told my partner Alf went this a
second throw better shows than because Ifought in the parking lot when I was
forty two million, cussa gando somebar. And then the second fight,
I had a July Ford and Ithought at a movie theater on a movie
theater in nogs so, you know, and and I just then I started

(28:03):
doing my own program. So fromoh nine to twenty eighteen, I just
did a bunch of shows with Casinodel Sol. Paskwayaki Tribe Enterprise gave me
an opportunity after I left Arizona State, so I'm very grateful to them,
the Heila River Indian community to giveme an opportunity. So I'm very grateful
to to them. I had showsthat Wildhord passed and the twenty eighteen started

(28:29):
coming. It was the end oftwenty seventeen. I sold my half to
my ex wife just because I wasit burnt out And I said, Oh,
I'm gonna try this fight, seewhat happens. Wow, but you
don't want to know what happened. You gotta watch the salesman. The salesman,
you know. And you you hada good guy maybe about ten years

(28:51):
ago who I met Henry said,Hu, theo who's now one or was
one of the biggest names in thegame. Yeah, I think he's still
going to fight. He was atwo time UFC champ, like he wanted
two way classes. And Hendry's fromArizona. He's from Maryvelle High School and
uh, you know, he's afour sign say champ and in high school

(29:12):
and and he won was the youngestOlympic champion for the United States well until
Snyder Bedwin in two thousand and eightwhen he was Olympic champs. So he
just kind of transitioned his way intoMMA and and it's uh, you know,
it's light the ninety five percent mindsetand five percent uh strategic. Well,

(29:33):
let me give you another name. And I don't remember his name,
but what a heck of a storywas the the the wrestler who's friends with
you and Sam the he one legAnthony Roblan. That's it, that's it.
What a fantastic story and what anathlete? Yeah, you know you
want to ask me award? Andthey're his movie is going to come out
in the fall. It's called Unstoppableand j Low Jennifer Lopez is playing his

(30:00):
mom. Okay, yeah, it'sgonna be awesome. And then you know
it's uh, I'm so happy forthese kids because that's what it's all about,
to see them succeed and grow. And yes, King, you know,
it's just the family men, thegood family men. So we're talking
to Tom Ortiz, the Sunnyside wrestler, a s U wrestler, All American

(30:22):
uh UFC fighter. Tom, sotell us a little bit about the camp.
You know what what you know whata kid's gonna come and learn what
you know, what can they expectfrom the camp, and then tell us
about how you know, how theyhow they can participate. Well, it's
free, so all they got todo is share it with their parents.

(30:44):
You know, if they're over eighteen, they just come and sign a waiver
and it starts at ten am atPueblo High School. So it's August third,
August third, and I'll make surethat. I'll send Steve a flyer
and then he can post it,you know, on the website having to
share it, and that'd be great. So you have it, Yeah,
seventy one and I saw That's howI got you on on the air because

(31:04):
I said, this will be coolwith Kim Wellust is coming in town and
you guys doing this for free. What kinds of things will they be learning?
What can they expect? You know, what's the activity wrestling? Okay,
so we're going to show them technique, and we got to get together.
I'm gonna get together with the threeother clinicians. John Moraga is going

(31:26):
to be there, Brian stiff Kine, and maybe we'll just show an hour
each and it's from ten to two. So I think we're gonna do more
technique and more you know, motivating, talking education and trying to inspire these
kids to like I like all sports. And now now the fastest growing sport

(31:47):
in the country is women's wrestling.Yes, huge, it's growing, it's
growing. They had a thousand inFargo. They had over a thousand girl,
fifteen hundred girls wrestling in most ofthe Coda Fargo, North Dakota at
the women's nationals or girls nationals becausethey're under eighteen. Yeah, well my

(32:07):
guess would have been even women's flagfootball, because that's becoming huge now.
Let me actually women's sports, whichmy daughter played volleyball, so I understand
the necessity of it. I usedsports to get her to get a degree
at Benedictine University of Mesa. Shewas a center and got a degree there.
And now she's really successful utilighting hersports mind usually lighting her business mind.

(32:30):
And she's a marketing executive for Dutchbros So. And her name is
Olivia Rose Artist and my dad usedto call her order so nice. Let
me ask you something that I'd neverasked you this What would have happened to
Tom Ortiz had he not had wrestling? I I we wouldn't be talking right

(32:52):
now. Yeah, we would notbe talking right now. I just I'm
looking at all my movie forward andeven when I got out of wrestling,
all my connections and opportunities came throughwrestling. So and I always look back
and how do they get together withthe Auckys? A wrestling person set me
up right over there. So everythinghas come from wrestling. I shivered to

(33:16):
think about that. Without wrestling, you know, without those mentors that were
there for me, Bobby Douglas ofcourse, down Coast Drive, my dad
from Berte Federico, Richard Sante Cincinnetiand those people. And I think the
most important, what person of themall, is obviously my mother. Yes,

(33:37):
she's the most outstanding motivator. That'swhat I used to call her.
So okay, I'm glad she She'sgoing to be eighty seven September ninth,
so I'm excited. Well, well, okay, so tell us one more
time we're at and when Saturday thethird, Pueblo High School, August third,
and what time? And am?But what what time do you want

(33:58):
people to show up, you know, to sign up and register and all
that kind of I would show upat nine thirty, okay, okay.
But it's going to be an easygoing clinic. I mean is probably let
them wrestle a little bit just toget you know, the bugs out,
But it's going to be very technicaland very you know, motivational speeches and
and we'll let them ask questions andand we can go over strength and conditioning.

(34:22):
And I mean, if you knowhow to lift for wrestling, you
can lift you know how to liftfor any sport. Well, thank you
for joining us today. Yes,I appreciate you. You well, Tom,
thank you, thank you. There'sthere's there's dudes. There's dudes that
you don't want to best with.Wrestlers are at the top of the list.

(34:43):
And he's grudges, so probably probablyyou're in history. Hell he was
talking about I fought the parking lot. I finded a movie that was for
fun, that was for fun. That noise is still coming. Let's get
the well, let's get out ofit. We'll be we'll be right back.
We'll close out the week. Stickaround, give us a call.

They have their eye on the ballon Tucson Sports station f Fox Sports fourteen

(37:46):
fifty. He welcome back to I'mthe Ball here on Fox Sports sporteen fifty.
I'm Steve, You're Jay Yojuana.We got a call. Hi,
you're on the airline on the ball. I'm good afternoon and gentlemen, Hey,
Rick, how was your trip tothe All Star Game. I'll tell
you what. I really had agreat time, and uh, it was

(38:09):
cool to see. I'm not aDodger fan, I never had, but
I got to tell you Otan hejust what a beautiful spring that man.
It was really it was great tosee all the and it was I ron
I taped everything and I been sevenhours in the airplane to day trying to

(38:31):
get home. But uh, itwas. It was fun to watch.
And I got to watch the rerunand it shows where they were talking to
air a judge and next thing, you know, ranking it out. That
was funny. Hey, is thata good stadium? Do you like it?

(38:52):
You know, as stadiums go,I guess, I mean, I
know it's new, but it seemsrather barn like. I don't know,
what do you think of the place. Well, you know it's I like
their older stadium better. It wasmuch more old fashioned potball. It was
a little bit too fufu for mycase, but you know, it is

(39:15):
what it is. Oh and bythe way, Jay, I overheard you
talking about you know you hold thesegrudges. Yeah, Mike, grudges come
against the guys that played poker with. So if that's the case, he
has nobody who likes he likes.I can see I can see how poker
grudges could be lasting. My namefor Rick is the contributor. Come on,

(39:40):
Rick, I know you're a betterplayer than that, right, tell
them the truth. Hey, Steve, I still think I had little your
money in my pocket last week. It's from nineteen sixty four, okay,
Rick? Another question about the AllStar Game? Were those uniforms as bad
in person as they look on TV? Oh? Those uniforms were ugly?

(40:05):
Is that what you asked me?Yeah? Those uniforms, I mean,
how awful were they in person?Oh? The American League uniforms looked like
you know, brownie out. Idon't know who came up with that color
scheme, but no, they reallydid not. They didn't match level of

(40:29):
performance and the caliber player. Yeah, how did the contributor get to go
to the game? Pardon me?How did you get to go to the
game. Why did you go tothe game? Well, I've got family
in Dallas and so in all overtexts actually, and I was able to

(40:49):
a couple of my cousins and anotherfriend of ours, so we all went
out and damn ticket parking with morethan a damn ticket. It was stupid.
How much one? I mean howmuch was like a hundred bucks?
What parking? Yeah? Oh,it ranged from anywhere from two hundred and
fifty to five hundred dollars parking. You pay a fee for everything. I

(41:14):
mean it really it was sad.But wow, you know, you know,
it's one of those experiences I getto do once in a lifetime,
and I'm glad I did it becauseI really I love baseball. So every
year for my birthday, I tryto do something special. Yeah this one.

(41:35):
I'm done with all Star games nowI've been there and so but it
is like, I say, whata ballplayer? Yeah, the man just
he is really impressive to watching someof these guys, and they played like
they wanted to win too. Itwasn't one of these fou fu games.

(41:58):
Yeah, okay, all right, great experience, gentlemen. Thank you man,
Thank yourect thanks saving your money.I have a great weekend later,
thank you. Yeah. Yeah,I've never been to a baseball all circame.
No, I maybe I would havea long time ago, not anymore
been the World Series? Uh kindof what does that mean? Kind of?

(42:23):
I had tickets. I had ticketsfor game one year at the Bank
Bank one, I guess some time, and uh, I got divertically.
It just didn't know what it was. Didn't know what it was. Couldn't
get out of bed. Yeah,couldn't get a bad I didn't what I
thought I had, like a badcrampers. Yeah. Well I was in
the hospital for two three days andthat was my first out of it.
And we had to get the ticketsto some people and we went, yeah

(42:45):
that's the game we went. Yeahit was, it was. It was
a great time. So when Ihad ticket, I had eight ticket to
Game seven, but couldn't go becauseI had to work the Red Blue game
that night. Yeah, so soyes and no, Yes, that's a
bummer for you. Yeah it wasfine though. Yeah, that's fun.
The funny thing about it, yousay, and this is how is night
ago last year? Yeah you think, okay, like the Josh Pastner real

(43:05):
thing. Oh they'll be back, there'll be another one, right, Yeah,
well I actually I missed in Arizona. There was a whome Arizona football
game that day. They played USCat home. That's the game. Remember
we talked to Jason Johnson. Hewas the quarterback and threw a pick six
at the end of the game tomove. Yeah, to lose that game.
But the best game, the best, the biggest game You've ever been
to, biggest game I've ever beento, probably well, well there were

(43:34):
those final fours, but okay, outside of the Arizona final fours. Well,
because I think this was actually bigger. I went to the NET.
I covered the National Championship Notre DameWest Virginia game in the fifty Yeah,
I covered that. That was whatwas the eighty nine, you know New
York State of eighty Was it big? Was it big? It was huge?
It was huge National time was theNational Championship game, which back when

(43:57):
they back when they were still voting, right, this was Notre Dame,
Notre Dame West Virginia undefeated, WestVirginia what year was this eighty something eighty
nine? It was it was afterthe eighty eight Seeds who coaching No,
no, God, God, Ican't think of his name. It was
not rich Rod, it was itwas before rich Rot and and uh Lou

(44:20):
Holtz was that was the not ninetwo years into I don't remember that they
had God who was it they andand and West Virginia came in undefeated and
and Notre Dame had one loss, and Notre Dame won the game handily,
so probably that you know, covering. Yeah, I mean I went to
the ninety seven you know, Finalfour, so you know that was that

(44:43):
was huge. Haven't been to aSuper Bowl, but haven't really desire to
go to Super Bowl. I didgo to National League playoffs Dodgers nineteen eighty
eight when they played the Mets inthe playoffs. Didn't go to the World
Series, but I went to gameis one and two of the of the
National League Playoffs at Dodgers Stadium. That was really cool. Uh you know

(45:05):
or Hershiser Strawberry, I mean allthose guys were were there. Uh well
what that really? Those are? Those are the ones, I mean,
you know, the final fours andstuff. Yeah, Yeah, luckily I
went to a lot of those, but mine are easy. The Olympic games
are up there. But the gameswhen the when the Cups, when the
Cups, When the Bulls played theUtah and the Fuel, the Flu game

(45:30):
with with Michael Jordan, right, but the game after when Steve Carer hit
the game where I covered I wasthere for the series, and then the
Berkeley ninety three years when I coveredthe Suns and that with the Bulls,
Well, I just I just don'tknow. The Bears, the Bears forty
nine ers NFC Championship Bears. Wellyou went to the game? Yeah,

(45:52):
yeah, twenty seven below zero?Oh no, god, why why did
you play that game? Because Icould. We were in Chicago, we'd
gone it. We gonn was everybodythere? Was it fool? It was
free, it was jammed, itwas cold. Was it minus twenty seven?
Oh, there's no way. Ididn't even get out of the room
minus twenty That that's one of thereasons I went. I said, this
is gonna be minus twenty seven.I'm here, I'm going. I got

(46:14):
I got to take it off ascalper for twenty bucks and then you lasted
the whole way I went there.I made sure I stayed for the whole
game. Did you feel cold? No? Did you say, like,
what the hell am I doing? No? No, no, I I
it was a it was a thingthat it was a it was a badge
of honor. I stayed to thevery end. I took a picture of
the scoreboard, you know, withthe game ending. It was fine for

(46:34):
three quarters because the place stayed jammed, but the forty nine ers were kicking
their asses, so people started leavingat the end of the at the start
of the fourth quarter and it emptiedout and then it got really cold.
That's when it got really cool. You know, kid one what yours?
Uh? Personally or from like ascope like no, no, personally personally.
Twenty fourteen, that ASU game forthe Pack twelve south yep, Oh

(46:57):
yeah, that was that was bighere. Yeah, that was seen in
Arizona Stadium as far as proud capacity, rowdiness and then the result you were
what twelve Yeah wow. But thoseare the good times because that's when you
form your love for sports at thatage, you know. But I think
the biggest from like like a lensI went to the Area McDonald National Championship.

(47:22):
Oh yeah, you were in SanAntonio. Oh you were there for
that. Yeah, it was likea last second. It was a once
in a lifetime. You were notthey were You were not in school yet.
No, it was still the pandemic, right, but you were?
You're not? You weren't you ofa No? How did you? You
decided to go? You and yourfamily or you? We took the trip
that the next day after the beatYukon and then what's the game? Oh?

(47:45):
Nice? So you are kind ofa fan a little bit. I
love you, man, I loveyou. You's got a bear down shirt
on right now. Yeah, lookat it. He's got an air on
a backpack. He's a home,he's all those things. It's all the
things you seen. Goody two, she's gddy two. She congratulations. By
the way, Uh, what we'regonna call? We gotta call real quick.
West Virginia coach was Don Neeland.Oh yeah, okay, yeah,

(48:07):
Oh hung up? Sorry a callback. We got a couple of minutes
left. Sorry about that. Wegot chatty. Here here you go,
Hi, you're on the air andon the ball. How's it going today?
What's you want to tell Steve something? Because he was making a comment
about j being grumpy. No,he is no grumpy. I've coached with

(48:28):
Jay. He's grumpy. No,but tell me what what what quality or
level of grumpy? Oh that wasthe most extreme grumpy I've ever seen in
my life. Come on, I'ma constructive grumpy guy. What was the
what was the scenario? Uh,coaching a high school game? After the

(48:51):
game, after we blew the game? We had the game won in the
last out, A way to loseit, remember, and one of the
one of the kids said to Jay, but we tried hard and the Jay
kind of lost it. I lostmy mind. Did you get on him?
The kid? Yeah? What didyou say? It was funny?
It was funny. Yeah, youknow what you know? I'm thinking,

(49:14):
where's he going with this? ThenI thought it was at Saint David.
So was did we blew? Weblew like a we blew like a what
like a six run lead or somethinglike that in the last inning and the
kid goes, but we tried hard, and I lost my mind. I
can't even tell you what I said. I just remember I went a listing.

(49:35):
Luckily, luckily, the parents hadno idea about baseball. They didn't
say a word. I went rightthere. They were great. Also,
one thing I wanted I wanted tobring up about the ugly ass uniforms in
the All Star Games. Yes,you know, and one thing that's kind
of bad for the average fan.If they see the guy in the uniform
and see his face, they haveno idea who he is because they were

(49:59):
thirty two first time. All right. We talked about that, yeah,
you know, and if they wouldhave had their uniform with the team,
then you'd have an idea who theywere. I mean, I knew a
lot of them work. I watcheda lot of baseball, But the average
fan isn't gonna say, I don'twhen the hell's that guy? Right?
Brian? Real quick, let's goback real quick. So you're the head
coach or you know, Brian, you're both assistant coaches. No, we

(50:21):
were both assistant coaches, weren't we. That's a n N with the coach.
Yeah, okay, So did youmake the kid cry? Did he
cry? I don't think I was. I was laughing too hard. I
don't think he cried, but hewas, Yeah, I think he was
a freshman. How long ago wasthis about twelve years? Thirteen years?
I guarantee you that kid has hada grudge one fifteen years said that the

(50:47):
kid was pretty talented. Yeah,he was really good. Yeah yeah,
fifteen years ago. I should findthat kid. Do you have a drud
coach Conzo? I hate that man. He probably has a picture of Jay
with dark and thanks, Brian, thanks for bringing that one up. I
appreciate it. Have a good weekthere. I remember that the defense arrests.

(51:12):
But see, here's the thing aboutthat. Okay, I let it
all out. Okay, I didnot hold a grudge against that because you
forgot about it. Ever, No, I you know, but it's not
you. It's when when he whenhe started talking, I'm like, okay,
he's going here. Wait wait,So at what point did he will
you talk talk to them? Andthere were time and then he responded,
right, well, they're in thedugout right and after the loss, and

(51:36):
our our our head coach, he'stalking to them, you know, saying,
you know, just kind of thepostgame talk, right and then and
he was pissed too, because theyblew we blew it. I mean it
was errors and you know, allkinds of stupid We blew the game.
We we didn't and and and andso he was. He was angry and
talking about them, and then thenit goes but we tried hard, and

(51:59):
I blew up. What did thecoach tell you? What did the head
coach tell you? But did hetell me nothing? Nothing? No?
I think did you throw something?Probably if you had, I might,
I might have kicked the fence, you know, because you know they're in
the dugout, we're outside the dugout, and you know it's what There was
a fence, you know, chainleak fence in front of it. And

(52:20):
there was still more games that weplayed afterwards, Like, no, I
think that was our last game.Oh okay, see that makes sense,
that makes sense. I think Ithink that was our last game of the
year. And had you won,you would have advanced or something. No,
it was just the end of theseason. Was the end of the
season. I lost my mind?I did, I did. I admit
it. Thank you for telling usthis. All right, it's been a

(52:45):
fun week, Steve. About grudges, it's been there. It's been the
theme of the week. So we'llwe'll try to come up with a better
one watching the Okay, I'll givethat a try. All right, Hey,
