Speaker 3 (00:45):
After we talked about that and didn't hit one. Goodness,
didn't hit me.

Speaker 5 (00:49):
It hit us. We were around the U of A
campus on Saturday afternoon. I've not been in too many
downpours like that in a long time.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Yeah, it's funny. It's that time of year, right, But
it was only in that area.

Speaker 5 (00:59):
Yeah. I must have just like stopped over the U
of A and it it just came down. If anybody
was there, you know what I'm talking about. I mean,
the streets got flooded, the stadium. I guess had some rain.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
Yeah, canceled practice.

Speaker 5 (01:11):
Yeah it was rough it last few the usual monsoon
last week. Yeah, it's sort of story. It wasn't I mean,
you know it.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
It was wet and yeah, well two sound's allergic to rain.

Speaker 5 (01:22):
Yeah, but it's amazing how you can drive, you know,
literally blocks away and there's nothing.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Now that hats you is it's raining.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
It's the monsoon experience.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
Well you know how it is.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
It's like when the snow is here. You get millions
of photos of snow and do something. I told them
Onsoon's here, put them on Facebook.

Speaker 5 (01:37):
We'll never erase tho is off my phone though. That's like,
you're kidding, Really that did happen.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Yeah, it was a few of those.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
Yeah, Hey, welcome to today's show. We're gonna have a
pretty good show. I think we're gonna have Andy Lopez
here and first hour three seventeen. Looking forward to talking
to him. I always love talking to him. You'd probably
know him pretty well. Sure, Uh, one of my great guests.
I have him in the studio every now and again.
He's my philosopher. Really, I hope he takes my insurance

(02:03):
because he's my therapist.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Such a good dude. Good dude, do that a lot,
don't we?

Speaker 4 (02:08):
Therapy? Welcome to the therapy, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Welcome to the field.

Speaker 5 (02:12):
Yeah, we could do a whole new show.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Just it's not the Phil Phil. What's the next Phil?

Speaker 5 (02:17):
Doctor Phil?

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Doctor Phil? It's the Phil dot or the Good Thing?
Is not the Marty Povid show. No, you know what
I'm talking about. He doesn't you?

Speaker 5 (02:29):
When do I? Ever?

Speaker 2 (02:30):
That's right?

Speaker 4 (02:31):
Yes, when this is he's not your daddy, He's not you.
That's that's the host guy. I've seen it.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
But that's more to publish.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Okay, So then that four seventeen, we're gonna have one
of our faithful guests too. It's one of my sponsors,
George Modis from Showtime Cards. So if you have a
card out there and you want to know what's priced,
let us know and we'll tell George or he'll be
on the phone for a while. See what's going on
with his world. I know he's really busy having a
show here pretty pretty soon, in about.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Two or three weeks.

Speaker 5 (03:00):
Where will you do that show? He's going to do
it at the casino. Really, how was he around? I
remember the days when they would have him at the
Foothills Mall. Yeah, yeah, I was. I would wander in
there and just take a look, and they used to
have big collections. A lot of fans would come over
there and it was a big deal.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Howard Howard and I don't remember Howard back in the day,
Howard on the show. Yeah, Steve, I saw you the
card because he's a card guy. You walk around and
you kind of Howard. I don't know who you were.
I don't know, but he remembers all that, he remembers
all that.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Yeah, there was huge cards. There's a lot of booths
back in the day.

Speaker 5 (03:33):
Yeah, they would do like a whole weekend and they
would just take over one end of the mall and
you know, people would just come through by ross. I
don't know if anybody. Yeah, I don't know if it's
happening anywhere else that thing anymore.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
I don't think so, because now it's all all breaks
and all the stuff you find in the in.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
The little boxes and whatever. It's a big deal. You
have some I think you have.

Speaker 5 (03:53):
Yeah, thank thank you my mom for that where she
she didn't throw out my cards.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
You have a bunch of Willie Bays.

Speaker 5 (03:59):
I bet Yeah, a bunch of like late sixties groups.
Of course, you know, when guys would retire, I would
write on the card and retired and yeah, doing ridiculous
things when we were like, you know, ten years old.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Well you didn't put them in the spokes like me.

Speaker 5 (04:11):
No, I didn't do that, but I would just what
what's the word, just mess face to face, face them,
to face them, you know, and not really realizing, you know,
fifty years ago what that meant.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
Right right, Well probably at the time too, they were
worth something you had that, right card.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
You don't know any better.

Speaker 5 (04:27):
But I have some that I never touched that I've
always wondered kind of what they're worst. So maybe I
need to go see.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
I have some stress nothing baseball. I have a lot
of basketball football. Yeah, somewhere out in somewhere, there was
a stretch there where I was doing both baseball, football
and basketball. The basketball cards in those years, probably even
before you were doing it, were kind of longer.

Speaker 5 (04:46):
They weren't like your typical Yeah. Yeah, I have some
of those, you know, I got like you know Rick
Berry and Oscar Robertson and that that group to go West.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
Yeah, late sixties or seventies, yeah, I have a couple
of Bill Waltons. Yeah, Chamberlain's. Uh so I don't I
have to go find them.

Speaker 6 (05:02):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
I'm moved left and moved.

Speaker 5 (05:05):
Yeah. I mean people are telling me, oh, you need
to go in there and find out the value of
these things, and.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Like, who's telling you?

Speaker 5 (05:10):
Your kids? No, I don't even think they even care.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
No, that's funny, that's funny.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Do you have crap that that if you pass? They're
just I don't know, Dad, don't leave that to me.
I don't care about that.

Speaker 5 (05:21):
I went through that with my parents.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Oh no, no, that's me too.

Speaker 5 (05:25):
But we were lucky we kind of got we kind
of picked away before they were gone, so we could
have them and they would appreciate. Oh yeah, you know
he took this and eventually they were starting to make lists.
So unfortunately when things were pasted, you know, we kind
of had the list went with that.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
Oh okay, yeah no, yeah, well parents, you know, I'm
sure one you have to uh cards from Yeah somewhere,
I do.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
I'm not sure. We don't care. We just buy them
and look at him and then put them away. Yeah,
like typical toys.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Okay, so again, Andy Lopez, were gonna talk to him
about what's going on. They just came up. Do you
have the rules? Like they're just proposing some new rules
on baseball. I sat on Twitter this morning. Instead of
seating the top sixteen, they're going to do the top
twenty four. I think more expansion. Yeah, not more expansion,
but gonna see them better. Maybe top thirty two. Just
kind of maybe google that before he shows up and

(06:14):
then talk to him about the kid who passed away
and he was thirty three years old. James Fairs, James Ferris, Yeah,
one of his stars back in twenty twelve. But you know,
we're gonna talk to him more than that. But they
were very close. What else closer to you? Of a
football eleven days? I saw your tweet it's.

Speaker 4 (06:31):
The Parks Will Parks days until Yeah, Arizona football, which
means eleven eleven, number eleven.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
You put a nice little feature on there with a
guy getting crushed.

Speaker 5 (06:42):
He's showing his age too. How about Chris McAllister. Wasn't
he eleven?

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (06:46):
I think so.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
I mainly do it to get like forgotten players of
the program out there. Who's ten, who's ten? We'll see
see Ronnie Veal Yeah, yeah, yeah, he was.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
It's a good way to pull up because we covered
him back in the day. Ronnie, how are you doing?

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Okay, that's nothing.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
I've had him on the show when I first started
this at the other the other station, and I got
that to say.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
He didn't change, really, he didn't change.

Speaker 5 (07:14):
He was a little bit better because remember he kind
of came up in the Mike Bibbie era of non
non verbals.

Speaker 4 (07:22):
Yeah, but then Mike obviously got better. We had Ronnie
with me when we had him out. Yeah, he was,
he's great.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
We're supposed to have him and his daughter, yeah show
and uh and now she's she's coming this year, going
next next year. Yeah yeah, and he was supposed to
come on with her. But we'll see. We actually started
the Ludelson camp Thursday and uh, he's not coming down,
but uh, I was trying to get selim. I'll try
him again tomorrow, coming is coming. Yeah, he's only been

(07:47):
here once.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
He'll come again.

Speaker 7 (07:49):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
It's one of the only gets, the big gets that we.

Speaker 5 (07:51):
Got so usual suspects.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Pete Williams, Pete Williams, Yeah, Pete Williams. A. J. Donnell Bennett. Uh,
and that's pretty much the highlight of the guys. Uh Tangara.
So Selma, yeah, read your party show up a little bit.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
So we'll see.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
That's Thursday, and then Friday, Saturday, and then Sunday. It's
a long four days. Why not have you come over
there A we're gonna do the show. We were going
to do the show from uh from downtown. I have
to tell Jay, I'm not sure if that's still gonna
happen from the i f L title game Thursday. We'll
see what happens us during their media day, during the

(08:29):
media day, or we might get him on the show
here then, and Blake is on Thursday, and then tomorrow.
You'll abail tomorrow just in case. There's a just in case,
just in case. Well, here's why he knows this already.
Yesterday I had to cancel them for today. Should be
I have proof here Thursday. I'm free every day but Thursday.

(08:51):
So in my mind, okay, so you're on the you're
at the end of the bench, but you're on the
bench and you'll probably.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Be called up. Yeah, you're gonna pinch, You're get any
pinch it's left.

Speaker 5 (09:03):
Yeah, I'm gonna go work out.

Speaker 4 (09:05):
Then tomorrow before two days in a row. Okay, we'll
see what happens and sounds good.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
After today, we have a couple of guests tomorrow, I think,
if I'm correct, maybe a tours.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Tour, anything else? Anything?

Speaker 4 (09:19):
Did you practice this morning? Yeah, to practice, it was
a slow practice, did you tell it? It's kind of
winding down very much. Why he's right around the corner
and they have a game in three days? Why why
why he has a game in three days? So why
not why not start preparing? Yeah, the same kind of

(09:40):
the same timeline as as as the Rainbow Warriors. But
you saw the scout teams going up against the ones,
the presumed ones.

Speaker 6 (09:49):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (09:50):
And it was actually a funny moment afterwards during the
we had the linebacker coach today, Josh Bringwell and then
Tate Brown and Max Harris after but the coach got
cut short by a fire alarm. It was it was
a little bit funny. Yeah, in the middle of a question,
you was talking about Max Harris and then the stadium
fire alarm went off, had to.

Speaker 5 (10:11):
Cut it short. Was that that must be the same
thing that went on at the rec center a couple
of days ago. Oh, the direction with the rain. When
something happened on campus today, you think there was an
instant on campus, but I'm not sure if it would have.
What time was this around noon? No?

Speaker 2 (10:25):
No, okay?

Speaker 5 (10:26):
Or after that?

Speaker 2 (10:27):
It's always an adventure. So did you get the kids too?

Speaker 5 (10:30):
Or no? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (10:31):
So they went first? No, no, no, after and so
coach went first. About halfway through, the fire alarm went
off and then they were like, okay, let's cut it short.
Gave it about ten minutes and then they shut it off.
We got to talk to the Max Harris and Tay Brown.

Speaker 5 (10:48):
Can you feel a difference this year compared to last
year as far as I was just watching them, Matt
out there and the movement, maybe the excitement level.

Speaker 4 (10:58):
It's it's interesting because there's so many new players, so
there is that excitement, that freshness of Hey, I want
to play my first game in an Arizona uniform. They're
ready to go, but it's it's still coming off of
a four and eight season.

Speaker 5 (11:12):
How good is this team?

Speaker 4 (11:14):
I'm sure in their minds they think they're great, and
that's that's what they're gonna have to think in order
to win more games.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
So do you agree with with Troy from yesterday that
the vibe is is different from from Brent than.

Speaker 5 (11:28):
It is.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
Then it was not yet.

Speaker 4 (11:32):
Yeah, I think I think you see a little bit
more of who Brent Brennan is, not so much of
the show face like I'm a good guy.

Speaker 6 (11:40):
No.

Speaker 4 (11:41):
He he wants to respond that they take everything from
not even not even just coach Brennan, Danny and Zalez.

Speaker 2 (11:49):
He's always crazy.

Speaker 4 (11:50):
We had coach, yes, Craig uh NEvAr he's he you
hear him a lot during practice.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
So yeah, he asked if he was that dude, that dude.
It's gonna be good.

Speaker 5 (12:01):
You know, they're gonna have maybe a couple of break
in games here to start the season two. I mean,
you know, obviously it's different than the pros where they
have pre season, but to have a couple you know,
so called gimme's right off the bat, it'll be good
to see some you know, among these sixty new players.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
Who's going to come out of that Well we talked
about that Dave and saying that we probably won't know
much about him till the third or so game, right, Uh,
And then that said what you said, Troy was saying
the same thing you know, they play Hawaii and then
weaber State, right, and then we're thinking, well, let me
tell you, Dave, I give you three little letters, and
au is that next?

Speaker 2 (12:33):
That's you know, who knows? Never know?

Speaker 4 (12:36):
So three three, four years ago already? Yeah for you
if you were freshman freshman four years ago, freshman, the
Lumberjacks came and upset the Wildcats.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
How did you leave that stadium?

Speaker 5 (12:47):
Disappointed?

Speaker 4 (12:47):
Of course, but like every other I wasn't mad, to
be honest, because Jay, it was it was you know,
it was still a team that's on a long losing street.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
You had to be there to day.

Speaker 5 (12:57):
I actually was there, believe it or not. A few
games I went to that season. It was not not pretty.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
Dave, a pretty mellow dude. Probably said what the hell?

Speaker 5 (13:05):
What is going on? Now? I've seen it all? Basically,
That's how I felt like all these years, I've never
seen that.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
I totally agree with you because I was in the
press cover thinking what the hell happened? And then I
remember I said this before he jed looked like he
had lost his dogs and someone had beat the crap
out of him, and he was like, holy crab, Yeah,
what just happened?

Speaker 5 (13:25):
It was rough. You know, they were I can't every
once all those you know kind of games like that
during the season, but and you you can almost count
on them to half like that historically.

Speaker 2 (13:34):
Yeah, that was a big one.

Speaker 5 (13:35):
That was a loss.

Speaker 4 (13:36):
It's a signature move by the kids. Yeah, I mean
during that time. You know, that's a They're already on
a long losing streak. They went win lists with the
COVID season, and so you're thinking, well, we're already at
the bottom.

Speaker 5 (13:48):
Right, No, let me show you the bottom.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
Here's a shovel.

Speaker 5 (13:51):
Yeah, let's take a little deeper into that.

Speaker 6 (13:53):
Right.

Speaker 5 (13:54):
Well, that's what it felt like, kind of a running
joke for you have a football through the years, it
always being oh, they're gonna win this game. You know,
you look at the schedule preseason, and then there's always one, Yeah, slip.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
Up, who's our Cal game?

Speaker 3 (14:06):
You always have a better telling the caln the Cal
always found a way to beat.

Speaker 5 (14:09):
Them or whatever, even they have a better record, the
better reputation, home field in some cases, and then things
don't work out.

Speaker 3 (14:16):

you have to work with it with no. We all
got to carry we all got to carry our crosses.

Speaker 5 (19:29):
And I know, I know you come in here sometimes
to just kind of keep him straight.

Speaker 6 (19:32):
Now, ball and change, man.

Speaker 3 (19:36):
I mean, I've never been rejected by anybody worse than
mister Andy Lopez.

Speaker 6 (19:41):
Oh, hey, man, you know I'm busy now on the afternoon,
I got the travel team.

Speaker 3 (19:47):
Yea.

Speaker 6 (19:48):
My son and my son arelaw happy.

Speaker 3 (19:50):
The only thing that tells me is, don't get retired
because you come become busier.

Speaker 6 (19:55):
God boy, amen to that.

Speaker 5 (19:58):
You're still what are you? What are you doing?

Speaker 6 (20:02):
In fact, I'm about to leave in about forty five minutes.
I'm going to read partuliter or Okay, my son, Dave,
Steve can flee a little bit there. But basically, about
four years ago, my son, my youngest son, and my
son in law came to me and said, hey, Dah,
we're gonna put together a travel team. And Steve Dave,
I was so anti travel team in my career was
ridiculous and so and so I so are you guys joking?

(20:25):
And they then they explained what they want to do.
We got some kids from the South Side, you know,
and I said, yeah, let's do it. Let's do it.
We'll do that. So I don't go to any games,
but I attend their practices and I, you know, I
try to do what I can. I'm gonna work with
the pictures tonight. I worked with the base runners last night,
and uh, it's Monday, Monday. We have a different practice

(20:46):
plan now Monday. When Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and you
know it's you know, it's from five to well, five
to eight, five to nine, depends on how I feel.
They stay till nine. I usually get everybody. But but yeah,
I'm doing that. But you know I do. I enjoy it.
I enjoyed working with him. They're young guys, twelve years old,
fourteen years old, and have a good time with him.

Speaker 3 (21:09):
Tell Dave and our listeners about the story about the kid,
about the offensive player. You have time for this, Yes,
we do get the age.

Speaker 6 (21:22):
So Dave, about three years ago, I go out there, Hey,
you know, hey, by the greats of God, had I
had a little success in the game. So you know,
I feel pretty confident talking to an eleven year old.
And so I'm watching this guy. He's eleven years old.
He comes up just above my waist. He's a short
stop and he runs really good. He's really fast, and

(21:42):
but he gets to the play and he starts swinging,
and you know, you know, everything's elevation, everything's launch angle,
launch angle, elevation, and try to hit a home run.
Try to hit home So there he is eleven years old.
The bat's bigger than he is. That's a little bit
of an exaggeration, but not too much. And and so
he's swinging up, swinging up, and everything he's hitting is
in the air, in the air, in here. So he

(22:03):
gets done hitting, he comes to shortstop. I was a
short stop at Utla. So I stand behind him and
I said, hey, I'll make it. And they hate Bill.
I said, hey Bill. He said, hey, coach, and they
call me coach Andy. Hey, coach Andy. I said, hey Bill, listen, man,
let me help you with something like you're really fast.
You know that. He goes, oh, yeah, I know that.
I said, yeah, you're really fast. So why don't you
do this, Why don't you hit the ball hard on

(22:24):
the ground. They're gonna make some airs because they're little guys.
You know how hard it is. I mean, old guys
make here's two of this. So he's nodding his head.

Speaker 5 (22:30):
He is okay.

Speaker 6 (22:31):
And I said, if you hit on the ground, you
on base, you get the first, you'll still second, you'll
still third, you'll score a run, you'll help this team win.
So I haven't made a lot of sense to me.
You know, I'm seventy one years old. I mean, I
have got a lot of sense to me. And he
looked at me, Dave, and he went, coach, Andy, they
don't pay you a lot of money in the big
League to hit single. So hey, Andy Lopez, by the

(22:57):
grace of God, fourteen Hall of Fames, Welcome to travel Ball.

Speaker 5 (23:03):
Has he ever heard of Ehiro?

Speaker 6 (23:05):
You had a lot of yeah, no, no, no, come on, David,
way too deep, that's yeah, yeah, you put some parameters
on this thing, man. So basically I just I stand
in the short center field now when he hits.

Speaker 2 (23:19):
Real quick. So let's get some bad news. I saw
you on TV yesterday, your player.

Speaker 3 (23:24):
Uh, just your thoughts on what happened with him after
the news came out maybe six weeks ago or whatever.
Just how unfortunate was I tried to reach out to
his family and then James Ferris the news yesterday.

Speaker 2 (23:36):
I didn't know the kid, but it just kind of
hit me like I just knew him.

Speaker 6 (23:41):
Yeah, he's a great kid, I'll tell you. You know,
in thirty eight years of coaching and you know, going
all over from the Orient, you know, Japan, Korea, Taiwan,
of Florida, Pepperine a Universe of Arizona. Yeah. You you,
you really do have some special young guys in your life.
And there probably was a common bond for me saying
this from the standpoint that we shared the same faith.

(24:02):
So there was a lot of times we would talk
about our faith and what was going on in life
and what have you. And there was one point in
his sophomore year where he was going through his daughter,
his sister was going through some health issues, and so
I would talk to him in practice, you know, about
our faith and hey, there's no guarantee that life is
going to be easy when you give your life to
the Lord and what have you. And it was cool.

(24:23):
It was great, man, it was great. So, I mean,
you know, he was he was a young guy for me.
He was even though he was thirty three years old. Gosh,
and I say this was so much. I'm so proud
to be able to say this about Jamie, about Jimmy
Ferris insures he was thirty three years old. You know,
he passed away on Sunday evening, thirty three years old.

(24:45):
And my goodness, he was a full human being. I mean,
he got married, he got a two year old son.
That's a heartbreak in itself. But I mean, you know,
he was rock solid in his faith. Oh my god.
He was such a competitor man. He was a great competitor,
which I loved. I absolutely loved about him. And and

(25:06):
yet off the field, boy, if you talked to if
you made him off the field, I'll tell you he
would warm your heart. Man. He's a great, great kid,
great young man. I said, they came a great young man.
So yeah, it's rough, you know, but but you know,
I stayed in communication with him via text message. Every Monday.
We would he would be getting this chemotherapy. He was
diagnosed in Ernie May. His mom sent me a text

(25:27):
message just you know, kicked me in the stomach when
I got it. He'd been losing a lot of weight.
He's in Jonesborough both he was in Jones Baro, Arkansas.
They moved out there, that's where there originally from. But
they lived in Phoenix when I saw him as a
high school player, and they lose a lot of weight
and just didn't have any energy. So he said, but
I'm better go get something checked. And he went in

(25:47):
Oh my gosh, talk about, you know, just changing your life.

Speaker 4 (25:50):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (25:50):
They diagnosed him with stage four liver cancer and and
they basically told him And the first time I talked
to him was early May and he said no, they said,
you know, it could be months, coach. And I said, well,
we'll start praying for a miracle, Jimmy, and he said, no,
I'm with you. And he was always positive to it.
I mean, you know, he's a man. He was rock
solid up until two weeks ago. He sent me a
text message during Monday chemotherapy and and you know he

(26:15):
he was he was starting to really I think he was. Yeah,
he did. In the text me he said, you know,
I'm not feeling like I should and I don't know, coach,
And you know, and I would shoot some things back
and I don't know. I was you know, I would share.
I would send him text messages every morning, scriptures and
things just to kind of encourage them. But you know,

(26:35):
it's a tough loss man and a young family, you know,
young family. So you know, if anybody's listening and wants
to help that family out, you know, he's got a
go fund me page, James Ferris, you know go fund
me page, and their you know, two year old son
and a young bride. So, uh, the family's rock solid,
you know, I will say that, man, mom and dad
or you know, there's there's there's rock solid in their

(26:57):
faith and gonna be a big loss obviously, you know,
big loss. But hey man, best life is not this
life as the next life. So at least that's you know,
that's our faith. You know, the best life that comes
the one coming. So anyway, rough rough time, you memories.

Speaker 2 (27:13):
Oh my gosh, you met well with that.

Speaker 3 (27:16):
You know, he looked like he was like a buck
seventy five. But you mentioned that he was a competitor.
I'm sure you you uh a buck seventy five when
he paid for you and he was like one of
the big starters for you.

Speaker 13 (27:25):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (27:25):
I guess that's what fueled him, him being a competitor.
I'm sure you loved those type of guys.

Speaker 6 (27:31):
Yeah. Man. The only one I can relate him to
is Mark Mullanson. He pitched for a long time in
the Big League, and you know, Mark is doing great
in San Diego. But Lanson was really strong in his faith.
His mom and dad. He used to send me teaching
tapes and Mark and I would talk about our faith
and oh my god, but if you got Mark Mullanson
on the mound, oh my god, it slitcher throat. I mean,

(27:52):
he was unbelievable. His competitive makeup was done off the charts,
and Farris was right there with him. I mean, James,
there's two stories. Okay. It freshman year. We were at Sansett.
We hadn't yet moved to High Corvett. I had a
speaking engagement, so I had to get going and I
ran the pitchers, and I had a young guy, Sean
Coo helped me, but I ran the pitching step and

(28:13):
it was one. It was early in the fall where
you had these stupid, idiotic MCAA rules where you only
could spend thirty minutes with the player and then they
had to leave the whole thing still hours. Okay, well
his bullet. He was a freshman. His bullpen wasn't going
very good, and he did not know this. I told
my assistant. I said, Sean, I got to get out
of here. I got to take a shower, and I
got to get across town and get to the speaking agent.

(28:34):
I don't want to be late. I'd be late. So
he said, okay, I got it. So I said, finish
up his bullpen. So I ran halfway through his bullpen.
I grabbed my clipboard and ran away. He wasn't throwing
very good. He was a freshman, which happens all the
time with freshmen. I ran, took a shower and I'm
getting out of the shower in MacHale our CBS Mackal
At that time, I obviously here comes Paris. He meets me.

(28:57):
I mean, I'm dripping, I'm soaking wet. I got to
tie around me and he looked me there. He says,
why did you leave my bullpen? And I went what?
He goes, why did you leave my bullpen? I said, well,
what do you mean? Why are your bullpen? You won't
throw him very good? Yeah, I use a little teaching
point here right, the advantage of it. And he stared
at me and he said, I'll get better. That's all
he said, I'll get better. And he walked away, and

(29:19):
I went, okay, I got dressed on to my speaking
in jammy, you know, to life his life. Man, he
got better. Wow, he got better. He really got better.
And you want that in an athlete, right, you want
a kid that goes say, I'll show you I'll show
you versus the guy's making fifteen excuses for why he
didn't pitch well. And then obviously the twenty twelve season,
you know, I did not go to my bullpen a lot.
I loved our starters, and I pitched our starters a lot.

(29:41):
We had a lot of complete games. He was one
of them. But because we went the way we went,
we went undefeated ten games. He didn't pitch for two weeks,
but he threw his bullpens. And I was there working
with him as a pitching coach, and he would throwose
bullpens and I would tell him, Jimmy, you know you
gotta be ready, man, you gotta be ready. You never
know you got to be ready. You gotta be ready.
But Boom Higher pitches well, connor Way pitches. Weall. He

(30:03):
misses rotations, fight, he misses rotation's fin And so there
we are. I never at create university where you know,
we're two games away from a national championship. And I
looked at him and he's throwing his pin. I said, hey,
are you ready? And he looked at me and again
that same look, and he went, if you give me
the ball, I'm ready. And I said, all right, you
got it, and we throw him on the night Tuesday

(30:23):
night and he goes seventy two Thursday innings and two hitter,
and you know, we win the national title. And that
was him. I mean, he just was quiet off the field,
but oh, man, guy, he had competitive greatness in him. Yeah,
you really did.

Speaker 5 (30:37):
Gets drafted in the ninth round in twenty fourteen. I
guess it was he, and he worked his way through
a couple of organizations. What kind of a professional pitcher
did he turn out to be?

Speaker 6 (30:46):
Well, there's the uniqueness of James Ferris, because I was
in communication quite a bit back then. He pitched well.
If you look at his numbers, he threw strikes and
pitched well. And he was in the Arizona Fall League
and a great Arizona Fall League. And but he he
didn't like the which happens in all in pro balls.
You guys won't know. He didn't like being treated like

(31:08):
a yo yo. You know, we're gonna send you up,
We're gonna bring it down, we're gonna send you up.
We're gonna bring it down where there, you know. And
he he flat on went and said, hey, give me
a chance to pitch in the big leagues and if
I you know, if I dropped the ball and released me.
And I know this because I knew his agent at
the time, and he called me and said, hey, look
she got to help me out. What faris had kind
of put himself on the limb. And he told me

(31:29):
the story and I laughed, and he goes, why he laughed.
I said, that's James, that's him, I said, And I
hope someone takes it to heart. I hope they give
him a shot, because if they do, they might have
a guy that can really help him. I think he
was at the Cubs at the time, and and they did.
And so he walked away. He packed the stuff, and
he packed his stuff, went to Jones Brooke, Arkansas on

(31:51):
and walked away and and he was enjoying life there.
He really was a big hunter, big fisherman guy. Yeah,
that was that was that was his integrity, that was
because uh, that's who he was, you know. And I
learned that. I learned that quick in my relationship with him,
and and it was I love coaching.

Speaker 5 (32:08):
Man. Have you been in touch with any of his
UFA teammates this week? I mean it's only been a
couple of days on this.

Speaker 6 (32:13):
Yeah. Yeah, we've had you know, text messages day, a
lot of text messages back and forth. My sons played
with them obviously, and you know, I ironically Sunday morning,
I was at church and I was got out of
church and I got a phone call from Greg Burn
and he he said, lo, you know, coach, how you
know what's what's going on? I said, how you doing? Greg?
So so forth, we talked about the college athletics as

(32:36):
it is today for a little bit and he said, Coach,
I want to ask you about James Ferris. I said,
I said, yeah, what's up? He goes, you know, I
just I don't know. I just want to check in
with you, see how he's doing. I said, you know, Greg,
to be honest with you. Yeah, it's crazy, I said,
be honestly, Greg. He didn't respond to my text message
on two Mondays ago, and I said, I'm I'm hoping

(32:57):
for the best, because you know, I told him when
we would talk, I say, you take care of business
and I'm here if you need me, and da da
da da da. But he was always pretty pretty regular. Well,
he was very rare on Mondays. So I got home
and I reached out to his mom via text message,
and she said, Coach, we're sitting right here next to
his bedside, and you know, we're just we're we're hanging

(33:17):
in here. And I can just tell by the text message.
So I basically tall, you give him a big hug
for us, and tell me how we're praying for his
strength and if anybody's gonna be able to, you know,
beat this situation, it's Jimmy. And uh, then she got
it was about one o'clock Sunday afternoon. And then I
got text message from her mom, his mom, Linda, about
seven about seven thirty here our time, that he passed

(33:39):
away at nine point fifty there in Jonesborough. So so
you know, I mean, yeah, yeah, tough man, Yeah yeah, yeah,
you know, as we all know, I mean, no, not
at thirty three. That's not supposed to happen, right, That's
not the way. That's not the way. Matt Albert. Yeah,
life has some pretty.

Speaker 3 (33:57):
Funny twist with right, just kind of change skars now, uh,
just maybe talk a little about baseball. Have you seen
the seating process that they're to do this coming season
from with with what now from Baseball sixteen, you know,
from sixteen teams to thirty two teams.

Speaker 5 (34:12):
You're talking major League Baseball? No, no, no Baseball.

Speaker 2 (34:15):
Yeah yeah.

Speaker 3 (34:19):
It says an effort to make the in depth selection
process regarding regional postseason seatings, the Division one Selection Committee
will begin seating invited teams numbers one to thirty two.

Speaker 6 (34:29):
Wow. Mm, I don't know how to respond to that,
to be honestly, I mean, I mean, if I were coaching,
I'd say, yeah, great, you know, I mean, more chance
to get a seed. But I don't know. Every time
I see something like that, I wonder if it kind
of waters it down a little bit, you know, you
know what I mean, Like, you know, it's like and

(34:52):
and to me, baseball is such a strange sport because
all you need is one You can need one guy
on the mound that alters the whole weekend, right you
know what I mean?

Speaker 2 (35:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (35:03):
In in nineteen ninety three, I met Pepperdine. In ninety two,
we win the national championship. Right in ninety three, we
have another really good year. They sent us to ten team.
We're in the Arizona State Regional and we're the two
seed and Arizona State to one seed. And that came back.
Then there were no super easos. The sixth number sixth seed,
the last seed is Evansville, Indiana, and everybody in the

(35:26):
stands is talking about, oh my god, evans Villena. Who
doing here? I had a buddy inn I had a
buddy in mine that was a scout in the Midwest,
and he called me up and said, hey, loves whatever
you do, don't don't face Evansville. So why he goes
They got a guy. They got one guy. They got
one guy on the mound, Ellen Bennis, who pitched for
a long time in the big leagues. Ellen Bennis pitched
for the Cards. Whatever. Yeah, and I watched that night

(35:48):
he beat Arizona State, the number one seed at the
regional one to nothing, complete game nine, about twelve to
twelve sight coups. And that's that's the reality, that thirty
two seed could knock that one set out with just
one arm.

Speaker 3 (36:03):
Well, you know, you know, I think one of the reasons,
you know how the NC double A is the reactionary
this last year and determine all that a lot of
the good teams got beat early. So they're just mentioned
in Alabama, who was a high seed got beat or
what zero, one, two, and now they're just trying to
maybe water it down, like you said, so, just to
kind of advance the higher seeds.

Speaker 6 (36:24):
Yeah, and see, I don't know the coaching me. You
know again, I'm an old dinosaur. I'm seventy one years old.
The coaching me says, hey, you know, if you get beat,
you got beat. Sorry, yeah, you know, don't let that
happen again. Like, figure out what you did wrong and
figure out what they did wrong. And I mean, if
you're a one seed, play like a one seed, right

(36:46):
and if you're not. If you're not, then guess what.
You shouldn't be a one seed? Like you should be out. Yeah,
I mean the beauty of it is the scoreboard doesn't lie,
you know. So no, uh, the hunt realiteamn too.

Speaker 3 (37:01):
Yeah, you said you're seventy one. Let me throw this
one at you. I know you don't miss this to you,
you don't miss even though you're a competitor. You probably said,
you know, yep, I'm done college athletics.

Speaker 6 (37:10):
Yeah. Oh god, no, oh my god, oh god, oh god, no, No,
I don't And I know they're making a ton of
money now, but you know what, see, hey, I grew
up poor. I grew up poor. My mom and dad
did a great job of we never knew it. I
never knew were report. So I got to ucl and
when I got to UCLA, I realized, holy smokes, I

(37:32):
grew up poor. You know what the heck? But no, no, no, no, man,
you you honestly, you couldn't pay me enough money to
do what these poor guys are doing nowadays. No shot,
no shot, I mean, I mean even Summer Bowl guy.
I got a buddy of mine that coaches in the
summer league in the Cape Card League. He was my
sister one hundred years ago in nineteen eighty three, and

(37:54):
he called me up about two weeks so he said, Nope,
you're not going to believe what's going on in the Cape.
Comedy guy said, well, I know what's going on. All
coaches are going out there and looking at players and
getting out of the foilal He goes, No, it's worse
than that. Guys are calling up and saying can I
come pitch for you? Right? Got it? So? So the
three of us we are the coaching staff at Orleans

(38:15):
in the Cape Codley, the three of Us and Joe
Smith from potlank University gets a hold of you, Dave,
and he says, hey, coach Silver, you know, look at
my numbers. And you tell Steve and and Steve tells me,
and we go, hey, we got to get this guy.
So he shows up and he pitches two nights so
that he can get in the portal, and he gets

(38:36):
the offer he wants and then guess what he does.
He packs his bags and goes.

Speaker 2 (38:42):
Home, just to be seen and just to be seen taken.

Speaker 6 (38:48):
How about that one? How about that one? So basically,
this one guy that I'm known forever, Kelly, he's been
coaching in the Cape Coddley, which is the premier summer
league for college athletics for college people. He says, well,
you wouldn't believe how many guys come in and go
come in and come in, and they come in. He goes,
it's it's like we're just we're showkeeping for the guys. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (39:09):
Yeah, it's a different.

Speaker 6 (39:10):
So basically, what what do we have We have a uh,
it's what's what's in it for me?

Speaker 5 (39:16):
Yeah? Just an audition.

Speaker 6 (39:18):
I couldn't do it, man, I couldn't. I couldn't do
it for one reason. I would be fired in a week. Oh,
my god, I'd be I'd be. You guys wouldn't be
talking about anything except Andy Lopez for the next three
weeks that there would be stories about Andy Lopez, Andy
Lopez and Lopez. And you don't sit around go that
guy was an absolute mad man.

Speaker 1 (39:38):
No.

Speaker 6 (39:38):
I was like, I couldn't take it.

Speaker 14 (39:40):
Yeah, Google ballistics also seems like there's there's also, like,
you know, thoughts of player movement during the actual seasons
of the college you know, regular season.

Speaker 6 (39:51):
They're all, you know, don't don't let anybody tell you. Hey, listen,
I've got a son. They just got named the associate
head coach about a month ago at the University of Mexico, right,
and and I've got a son. So I've got it
from a pretty good source. I've got a great relationship
with that young man. And listen, man, when they have

(40:13):
a good player, those guys are being contacted March, Yes,
in March, they're being contacted.

Speaker 5 (40:20):
Yes, Salmon's bad.

Speaker 6 (40:21):
Come on, man, yeah, right, come on.

Speaker 3 (40:23):
By the way, By the way, there was a great
story in the Athletic I don't know if you saw
it about New Mexico being poached for football, basketball and
now base you know, yeah, because they're that mid major
that if you do well, guess someone's coming to get you.

Speaker 6 (40:35):
Yeah, exactly, man. And I mean my son called me
his first year. It was three or four years ago,
and and he didn't said yeah, what do I do?
I said, you know, he had a picture. It's pretty good.
His dad, we're on the road. He's on the road,
He said, Dad, what do I do? What? So and
so got a call last night from under said I
got a call from an SEC school And I went,

(40:56):
what Because you got a call that said, hey, listen,
take care of yourself. We got money for it in
the year.

Speaker 2 (41:03):
That's crazy.

Speaker 6 (41:04):
Are you kidding me?

Speaker 4 (41:05):
Said?

Speaker 6 (41:05):
Someone addressed that. Man, I said, I'll do it. If
you don't want to get my fire going, get me going.
You know, I'll be having to make that phone call.
But but it doesn't even matter. That's the thing. There
are no rule, right, that's it.

Speaker 2 (41:19):

I'm Steve Rivera.

Speaker 5 (46:12):
In today with me is Dave Silber.

Speaker 3 (46:14):
We got one man monitoring the phones. If we get
we only got six minutes or so because of that interview.
We didn't want to it was too good. He's a
good Yeah, he's his own show. I tried to, let
me tell you, you wouldn't be here. True, I've tried.
I've tried to convince him to come on more and
and then he giveshim to this baseball stuff.

Speaker 6 (46:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (46:35):
So I called him today, I think you don't have
baseball now, and.

Speaker 2 (46:37):
He says, I still do it, but as coaching, you
still do still doing it.

Speaker 5 (46:41):
It's good, it's good. I mean, it's great that you know,
he obviously the kids have no idea about his history.
They're lucky to get a guy who's had, you know,
fifty years of coaching and it's fun around the game forever.

Speaker 3 (46:52):
It's funny though, that story that we he talked about
with the little eight year old, eleven year old that's
still funny because here you get this dude, you know
a few national titles. Coach, come on, digged long ball.

Speaker 5 (47:04):
That's like and that's such an old statement that I'm
sure his grandfather told him, you know, from back in
the day when was it the Braves pitchers like Maddox
and Glavin and those guys. That was kind of their
kind of their line. Yeah, so that's yeah, that's funny.
They're still still using that at this age. Especially. I
mean if you turn on TV nowadays, the last couple
of weeks, it is Little League World Series all over

(47:25):
the place, right, So yeah, I.

Speaker 3 (47:26):
Just I wanted to ask him about that too, because
there's that twelve year old from somewhere TYPEI or some
whit Kevin Mortis throwing eighty two miles an hour, which
is one hundred and seven in major leagues.

Speaker 5 (47:37):
Yeah, how you hit that little league distance?

Speaker 2 (47:40):
Wow?

Speaker 5 (47:40):
Yeah, I mean it's something else. But they do get
quite the exposure. And they had that game on what
was on Sunday Night Baseball where they you know, the
major league teams played again, I thought was Sunday Night.
You're right now Seattle on the Mets.

Speaker 3 (47:50):
Yeah, yeah, what an experience one to get there and
play in it, and then you have all this other
stuff going on.

Speaker 5 (47:56):
And you know, like at Osburg and stuff like that.
There's been a few Tucson teams that have won been
in it, and it's pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (48:02):
Yeah, yeah, Wow, every player's dream, Yeah, everybody.

Speaker 5 (48:06):
You know, and Andy, you think about all the players.
I'm sure he's done it himself, but you know, it'd
be fun to kind of look back at his what
was here about thirteen years something like that. I mean,
all the guys that he sent off to the pros
and different got.

Speaker 2 (48:17):
To different levels, right, and he was not he was
the you know, I did ever play for him.

Speaker 5 (48:21):
I just hear.

Speaker 3 (48:22):
He was a tough dude, demanding dude that paid hard
for him. He was probably the typical coach that you
need to motivate you well, you know, hug you when
you needed it and kick you and butt when you didn't.

Speaker 2 (48:33):
Yeah, you know when you did.

Speaker 5 (48:35):
It was you know, and he was kind of you know,
he's a few years after Jerry Kendall finished. I guess
we had Jerry Stitt in between there too, so there
wasn't much time between two. You know, pretty much Hall
of Fame coaches have been here at the u of A.
And you know, Chip will you know, maybe following their
footsteps right the way things are.

Speaker 2 (48:50):
Going right, so we'll see what happens.

Speaker 5 (48:51):
It was good, good to have him talking a lot
about history and a lot about just you know, how
his faith is important and how that kind of played
a role with James Ferris passing away this week.

Speaker 2 (49:00):
Right, Yeah, thirty three years old.

Speaker 5 (49:02):
I'm sure you know, there's gonna be a lot of
He didn't really answer the question directly, but just the
you know, the teammates, I'm sure they're all you know,
morning and trying to come together as a group. And again,
thirty three, they're just young, especially the guys they were titled.
You know how close they were. Title was championship team.
All of those guys might still be out there playing.

Speaker 2 (49:20):
Yeah, you do you cover baseball? Did you well?

Speaker 6 (49:24):
This year?

Speaker 5 (49:25):
A little bit?

Speaker 4 (49:26):
I covered about two games, and so two more than
I've been to prived. I went to a few games
as a fan.

Speaker 5 (49:32):
It's fun. It's a good time, especially when the weather's
nice and you know, like early spring games. I'm not
a big fan of sitting out in the sun too much,
but those night games are great.

Speaker 2 (49:43):
Yeah, because it's late May, right or or mid May?

Speaker 5 (49:47):
April?

Speaker 2 (49:47):
Well then perfect?

Speaker 5 (49:49):
Are nice?

Speaker 2 (49:50):
Come on, you're living in and April. That's fantastic.

Speaker 5 (49:53):
I suppose you guys talked about all the baseball that's coming.
Did you do that yesterday? Oh yeah, games that are
coming to Yeah you know you know, well didn't till
we've talked about it. But no, not not directly yesterday.
We got to go here in about a minute.

Speaker 3 (50:04):
Righteah, maybe talk about it tutes. Okay, No, no, we
talk about it though, with the Mexican Baseball League.

Speaker 5 (50:09):
And the Arizona Fall Ley for one big day of
three games. That's yeah.

Speaker 3 (50:13):
I thought it's going to be more than that. In fact,
I called in fact, thanks for reminding me. I'll try
to reach her again tomorrow. She didn't return my call
to come on the show, because yeah, that was released
last last week. Late last week we were at that
function one and I at that Tuesday function of Sports
and Tucson. You've seen it grow tremendously. Getting here in
eighty three was it?

Speaker 5 (50:33):
Was it dumb?

Speaker 2 (50:34):
I know this will run out of time.

Speaker 3 (50:36):
The Dusty Tuson people talk about I got here in
eighty seven.

Speaker 5 (50:39):
The dirty Pueblo, the dusty.

Speaker 2 (50:41):
You know what I'm saying it was.

Speaker 5 (50:43):
It was no you know what I'm saying it wasn't
mean it wasn't good smoke, right, But I mean, yeah,
you know, if you just in terms of facilities, like
there was in a stadium didn't look the way it
does now. Yeah, I mean, you know, in the press box,
which is now like almost thirty years Yeah, I remember
that tiny, tiny That's my point kind of stuff. But
you know, the amenities weren't great. High Corbett was not great,
but when the Rockies showed up in the nineties, they

(51:05):
fixed things up.

Speaker 2 (51:06):
No, it's totally different, especially that kemp.

Speaker 5 (51:09):
Kale has been kind of you know redone inside now
at the New Court. Were you here with uh?

Speaker 2 (51:14):
Were you here when they filmed Revenge on the Nerds?

Speaker 5 (51:18):
I was, I was, And a lot of that was
shot a bear down. There was a lot of bear
down Jim because they were sleeping in bear Down Jim.
It was kind of the makeshift dorm. But yeah, a
lot of changes forty years ago.

Speaker 3 (51:31):
Yeah, I got here in eighty seven, tremendous changes. You
got here in eighty three. Yep, that's just tells you
were old.

Speaker 5 (51:39):
In the fact that we can even remember that as
a remarkable I.

Speaker 2 (51:41):
Don't remember dates. Don't twizz me, don't quiz me, Dave.

Speaker 5 (51:44):
I'm not good on the dates. I'm good on the memories,
but I can't tell you when they exactly happened that time.

Speaker 2 (51:50):
Let's go, we gotta go.

Speaker 5 (51:51):
Can we go?

Speaker 1 (51:52):
Now?

Speaker 2 (51:52):
We got enough time? Okay,
