Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is I on the Ball with Steve Rovera on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services insure
your most prized possessiets.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Hey, welcome to Iron the Ball here on Fox Sports
fourteen fifty. We give you a special street to all
the songs. Look at the Friday. It's Friday Jays in town.
So we you know we must have something going on here.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Man, I'm ready to go. It's college football season started
last night. There were some awful games, but I watched.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
I watched them all you're gluten for awful football. I
hate the Big Ten already.
Speaker 4 (00:52):
You know.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
I hate everything they stand for, the USCA, the whole
Big Ten. They were zero and four against the spread
last night, and I had two of those games. Yeah,
you know what, Wisconsin was giving up seventeen and a
half and didn't even get to seventeen last night.
Speaker 5 (01:07):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
And then I I'm slapping myself for giving up that
many points with a couple of couple of those teams.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
And so I'm I'm upset at the big time. So
now we definitely know that the football season will started, yeah,
because the bad picks will start.
Speaker 6 (01:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
If they have that said we're gonna have our picks
usual yearly picks here every Friday or so. We're hoping
still open and get to the casino. We don't know
what's happen. Last year we were there for for the season.
So okay, So at four four forty, we're gonna do
our picks.
Speaker 6 (01:37):
Yes, uh, every major picks good or bad. Yes, I
just did them about an hour ago. All right, and
go with that. I already hate one of my picks,
but you had to go with it. But I'm gonna
go with it anyway. Okay, I just I hate it,
but you'll you'll, I'll get to it. But okay, I'm
taking it. Okay, some guy must have picked it for you. Well,
(01:57):
I mean yeah, I mean I listened to you know.
You know.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
No, just I've told you a million times. I'm just
getting information and then I'm make it on my own mind.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Thank God, thank you for those people that are racked
it up as bud. Okay, So we're gonna have that.
We're gonna tough four three fifteen, three seventeen, We're gonna
have the voice of the Wildcats, mister Jeffries, Brian Jeffries.
And then at four seventeen, we're gonna have probably the
Brennan press conference that happened yesterday to get us ready
for a tomorrow's game. Uh and at four o'clock breaking news,
(02:31):
I got some yeah, okay, and I think that's it
right for Dan. Yeah, we got you know, other than
you watching football last night and h and all that,
you must to be a little giddy.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
I you know, I I've been having this conversation with
a couple people. I first had it with my wife,
So that'll tell you. I mean it was like she's
still talking to you. She does and she you know
what she loves. She loves sports. Yeah, you're she didn't
grow up.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
In a family that loves sports. And we we we.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
Did have this other conversation that she said, I really
I'm glad that I'm a part of this family because
of that, you know, part of that's a part of
such a big deal for us. When were the kids
and the whole bit. I see my grandson running around it.
He went and got his he went and got his
new Arizona T shirt for you know, for the season,
you know, because we're going to take him to the
(03:18):
games and stuff, and and the conversation I was having
with her, and then I had it with some other
guys who kind of agreed with me, is that I
feel like there's more excitement and anticipation of this college
football season than I.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Can remember for locally, no, all together overall.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Because I just and I was trying to analyze why
I thought that, why I feel that, and you know,
just in terms of the marketing, the commercials, the all
the podcasts, all the discussion, all the things, and and
my my conclusion on it was that I think it
it has to do with a bunch of things, one
of them being I think the college football Playoff has
(03:55):
created a lot of excitement for college football, and we've
we've had one and it was a great thing, and
so I think people are really excited about it coming up.
And then the other thing I think is that all
the realignment is done right, We've had a season of it,
so we're talking about games and matchups, and because of
realignment and because of the playoff, there's all these great
(04:16):
games this weekend, right, And so I feel like we're
talking about games and we're not talking about what conference
are you in and what are the teams that you're playing.
We're talking about the games, and then there's but you know,
there's three top ten.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Matches matchups tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
I think of this, and so I or this weekend,
and so I feel like everybody's a lot more excited
about it than than maybe in past.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Years in your head, So I guess you agree.
Speaker 7 (04:41):
Oh yeah, well, I mean, kind of getting to that
point of him talking about the realignment, I think it's
I mean, you don't you don't usually see Oregon and
Ohio State in the season. We got to see it
twice last year, you know what I mean. So it's
just one of those things that it's obviously Texas George
is another one of those in season games that we
got to see twice, and it's like it's awesome because
people aren't usually like these are championship level games, it
(05:04):
feels like, and you're getting them in the season and
sometimes twice.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
So yeah, yeah, I mean, you know, Ohio Stateton Texas tomorrow,
I'm the first thing in the morning, exactly. I mean,
I'm gonna still be Jammi's and I'm gonna have that
game on, you know, you know, probably you know, go
make you know.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Go get myself some CHARDIESO and eggs.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
And you know, I'm looking forward to getting up in
the morning watching game day. I'll turn off the volume
when Pat McAfee starts talking. I hate that guy, and
then I'll watch the game and then I'm excited about
this game.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
We have a caller, HiT's back, you get that j
off the end, big Giant turn. Well, they're replaced in
Corsos last game, the last game him as well, So
I kind of get that feeling. And they have a
lot of publicity going up. Right, there's yeah for all
this season, and to begin with the big games, because
they're to begins. What about locally though.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
I think I like it's a it's kind of a
wait and see kind of thing. Let's see what they've got.
I don't think we're going to know for three weeks.
Welcome to right right, and and and you know, and
I'll ask Brian Jefferies this because I you know, I
feel this. You know, I feel like this year we
know as little about the team going into the season
(06:16):
as maybe we have in a lot of years, even
when over other coaching changes and stuff like that, and this,
you know, he's in his second year, but it's like
he's starting over.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Yeah, Brent Brannan and so.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
I don't know, you know, I don't expect a huge
crowd tomorrow, maybe thirty eight thousand, forty, you know, because
our because our fans are that way and they're gonna
wait and see it.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
And you know we got we were stated next week.
Let me let me ask you this, uh and one
one really wasn't here. So you remember that call we
got from Bill I got you know, Steve, I'm really
negative on the on the crowd and right, fans, nothing's changed.
Speaker 6 (06:54):
It's always been that way. It's always been that way,
whether you like it or not. It's just the way
the fans are.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
I mean, think think.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
About the had Fish ten and ten and three year.
The fans didn't start showing up till the end of
the season. He had to continue to say the game,
you know, the you know, the the.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Rich Rod year, the Backcroff South championship year.
Speaker 6 (07:14):
Again the fans didn't show up to the issue game.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
Right that those are the fans.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
And and you know, Arizona can go three and oh
go go to Iowa State and you know, maybe lose
an Eyewa sape, which they probably should, and then they'll
come back and people going on I don't know, yeah,
red Blues, so yeah, yeah, you know that's that's the
Arizona fan. But I locally, I think there's some anticipation,
(07:41):
but there's also going to be I think because our
fans are our fans, They're they're gonna wait and see.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
I really, I really think that. What's the buzz on campus?
You're on campus.
Speaker 7 (07:49):
Yeah, people are I think a bit more excited than
last year. I kind of I always say that, you know,
it's a basketball school because maybe not a blue blood.
Speaker 5 (08:00):
I think we've we've had we've exhausted that conversation.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
No, we have, We're gonna have it again.
Speaker 7 (08:06):
But it is a basketball school, and so I feel
like people are excited just because it gives them something
to do kind of before going out and that and
you see that, you know what I mean, because it's
like you see a lot of that Zona Zoo like
empty out by halftime unless it's a great.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
They did a good job last year of sticking around,
I will say, and I think it probably I think
we did at the game props at the end of
the year that they they were good. They showed up
and they stuck around, and I hope they continue to
do that because I think the rest of the crowd
feeds off that. You know, if the students are there,
you know, other other fans might say, now, towards the
end of the season, it got bad. You know, the
(08:40):
season was so bad even I went left at the
end of a you know, in the middle of a
third quarter.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
So you know, it's it's part of it's going to
be what it looks like tomorrow. Let me say this.
You knew of the improvements of the food and whatever
they improved. You you talk to or you would herd.
So they're waiting another year for the sound.
Speaker 6 (09:04):
They don't have money for the sound system. That's they're
sounding something else. I think we're two big things. Yeah,
so yeah, money, I guess right, Yeah, I'm sure. I'm
sure it's about that. It would be like a priority
or maybe not.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
I don't know. Well first didn't.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
I mean, I hate it, but and you know, and
I and I think it. I think it, you know,
changes the experience. But you know, I've got Brian Jefferies
in my ear.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
Yeah you know, ye, yeah, you know, I'm one of.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
Those guys that takes a radio I listen because I
want to hear what Brian and Lamont are talking about
as some you know things happen and I don't listen
to it on uh, you know, on the app because
that's like ten seconds, oh, ten seconds, twenty seconds late.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
I get a radio.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
In fact, I got a new radio for the first
time in about fifteen years because I finally busted the
one that I had.
Speaker 5 (09:50):
They still sell radio they do.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
I went I went on Amazon yesterday looking for a
portable AMF and radio. They make up there the size
of a credit card. Wow, So it can go right
your pocket. And I just saw it got delivered to
my house about fifteen minutes ago.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
I'm like, I want to get home and turn this
thing on.
Speaker 5 (10:07):
It's awesome.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
It charges, It charges with a USB thing. We're talking modern,
stop dude. So but you know, I'll have a radio
and I like to hear what those guys are talking about.
So I hear the sound. If I can hear the
PA guy, that's good enough. I think it's you can. Yeah,
I can hear the PA guy. What's what I can't
(10:28):
hear what's Unfortunately? I can't hear the videos. Right, there's
the the opening video, the Hike video that they play
the band video that they put on those things, I
can't hear, so you know I can't Yeah, so, but
I mean I can hear the PA guy, you know,
Jeff Dean, So that's fine.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Okay, So there's that, So we'll see what happens. I'm
looking forward just because the starts the season. I think
Brendan's going to be better than he was last year. Yeah,
Noah will to question is how good does he need
to be?
Speaker 6 (11:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Right, that is the question, you know, is six wins
enough for fans? And more importantly, that's right to be
happy because you have to do better than that.
Speaker 6 (11:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (11:14):
I feel like I've been saying, it's just it really
just depends how competitive they are. They to me, they
can go five and seven, and if they're competitive losses,
you know, to good teams, it's.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Like, you know, yeah, because they were not competitive.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
They weren't last year, and that was I think the
bigger issue.
Speaker 7 (11:26):
I mean, you go to UCF and you get blown out,
to to TCU get blown out, It's like.
Speaker 5 (11:29):
Man, how am I? How am I supposed to keep
watching when it's like thirty five.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
That's why the early part of the season is very crucial.
They got to go three and oh or whatever it is.
Because if you start to go three and oh, but
they can't get their stuff, they start getting demoralized and
blah blah blah.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
You know, but if they know if they played play well,
Kansas State's ranked, if they play well against Kansas State, Okay,
but it's at home, they can't. You know, they can't
lose thirty eight to seventeen to Kansas State at home.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
Yeah, it's gonna be a good litms to They can't.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
And that's where I think we find out about this team. Okay,
let's take the break, get ahold of mister Jeffries in

Streamy live on the iHeartRadio, while this is Eye on
the Ball with Steve Rivera on Fox Sports fteen fifty.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
Hey, welcome back to My on the ball here on
Pot Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera and today is
Jay gonzaus got Ramundo here at the controls, and now
on the phone, we have the voice of the Wildcats,
Brian Jeffries.
Speaker 6 (16:41):
How are you doing, Brian, gentlemen? Couldn't be better. It's Friday,
day before season opener and nothing gets my My juice
is gone more than daylight today, So excited for a
new campaign.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
So I'm tomorrow I'm wondering if you got your sleep
in August, because you won't have a day off until
May something, maybe.
Speaker 6 (17:02):
June, maybe Jim, yeah, something like that. But no, it's
it's kind of the routine, and that's okay. This is
what we do for a living and it's a lot
of fun. So it needs working. Yeah, no question.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
We were talking before you came on the air right about
the anticipation of the city, whether it's a national level
for football and local level for football. What do you feel.
Speaker 6 (17:25):
I get the impression that the fans are kind of
in a weight and see.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
Mode right now.
Speaker 6 (17:31):
And a lot of it has to do with, you know,
the turnover in the roster for football, because and this
is the way it is everywhere across the country with
the transfer portal, you have new guys coming and going.
And you know, Arizona's got sixty one new players on
the roster and I think it counted maybe close to
thirty of them could play tomorrow night. I don't know
if they all will, but they could. And so, you know,
(17:53):
I think anytime you're a fan of a team, you know,
you cling to you know, the personalities of the team
and other than Noah, there's just not a lot. But
you know, Noah is the face of the team. So
I get the impression talking to fans that you know,
they want to see what Brent Brannan's got. I mean,
that's what they're they They're not going to make predictions.
(18:15):
It's just, Hey, I'm want to go out Saturday and
see what these guys are all about, because we really
don't know yet.
Speaker 3 (18:20):
And and that's the thing, Brian, you know, we the
other thing we're talking about was the fact that I
can't remember or maybe and again a lot of this
is the product of the Portland one, but going into
a season where we knew so little about what we
think we're gonna see, right, I mean it's getting more
and more like that all the time. But I mean
I feel like I have no idea what it's gonna
(18:42):
look like tomorrow night.
Speaker 6 (18:44):
Yeah, I would look at it this way, Jay, this
is in my opinion, this is a better team than
last year's. They have more depth, they have more size
up front. I think they have a lot of pieces
in place to have a good season. But with all
those new players, how will they fit together? And even
Brent Brennan will admit it. He says, I think we're
I think we were in good shape. I think we're
we look pretty good right now. But until we play somebody,
(19:07):
we really don't know. So that's again why I'm you know,
kind of excited to see tomorrow. And it is the
first game, and I think, just like Hawaii had some
trouble early on in their first game last week, you
don't expect perfection from the Wildcats in game one. But
I think from you know, the first half of the
second half, you should probably see it jump forward and
(19:29):
then you will kind of see how a lot of
those new guys fit in. There's some exciting players on
this roster, and I hope they get a chance to
show early.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
So, Brian, I'm assuming you've been to the practice field
a few times to watch them play. Have you been
able to spend some time with Brent, just just casually
or otherwise. I'm predicting an up told Jay here, I
think that you're going to see a different Brennan just
personality wise, more more aggressive or more more vocal, maybe yeah, something,
(19:59):
just something. What is different than he was last year?
Speaker 6 (20:02):
Well, I think you know last year he walked into
a tough situation. He was hired, I think a little
bit late in the coaching circle in January, and you know,
he inherited a team that you know, some guys, well,
everybody he had not recruited. He had to go out
and pull some guys in. And I just think it's
(20:22):
a different feeling this year going in because he's a
little more comfortable with the players on the roster and
the situation that he is in right now. And I
think he's more comfortable with his coaching staff as well.
And so I don't know if he's going to be
more vocal or not. I don't sense that there's any
change in him, and actually i'd be concerned if there was.
I think he needs to be as his own guy,
(20:43):
so to speak. And so the same Brent Brennan and
I saw a year ago is the same one I've
seen so far this season. If there's anything that I've noticed,
it's probably just a little bit more of a comfort
level with everything surrounding him right now.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
Yeah, And that's what you know, you would expect from
a coach, you know, after have the first year, and
I feel like I feel like he had as tough
a first year as anybody since. I remember, you know,
when when Dick Tomy came here, because they were coming
off two great seasons with Larry Smith and Dick you know,
went four four and three, and people were just not
(21:16):
sure about him. And then his kind of the same
as brand, sort of a low key approach and and
you know, his outward appearance it was kind of the
same thing that it was kind of like people weren't
really embracing him at that time. And I don't think
people really embraced Brandon last year, partly because of the
way the season went. But again, you know, he wasn't
(21:38):
the fiery guy on the sideline or they didn't feel
like you know, with Jet Fish, he felt like, you know,
he was in charge of the offense, so you had
some confidence in that because the offense was pretty good.
And I feel like he had as tough a transition
as any coach since Dick.
Speaker 16 (21:54):
Oh.
Speaker 6 (21:54):
I agree. I don't think there's any doubt and against it,
just to repeat what I said a couple of minutes ago,
and that the fact that he was hired a bit late,
and you know, Jed Fish took a number of guys
with him. I think what. There's ten former Arizona players
on the Washington roster right now, and some of them,
you know, played key roles and that's tough to recover from.
And and with a short timeline to go out and
(22:18):
having to recruit, I think, yeah, he was in a
tough spot. He made the most of it and uh,
you know, things didn't work out one loss wise. But hey,
here's a here's a little trivia question. See you guys
got this one. Since nineteen seventy seven, who is the
only Arizona football coach to finish his first season with
(22:38):
a winning record?
Speaker 2 (22:39):
I have that?
Speaker 6 (22:41):
Oh you do? Okay?
Speaker 2 (22:42):
Jimmy Young? I figured you did, man, Jimmy Young.
Speaker 6 (22:45):
No, since nineteen no seventy.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
Seven, Mason, No, he didn't the end, Yeah, yeah he
did not. Well, that was the era there, Mike rich
rich Rod Richard, Yeah, he's you. You'll get three bullets
in three bullets.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
Come on, man, I gave you a Jay Dobbins thing
yesterday that nobody had, so.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
Let me ask you, Brian. I, Noah has a lot
of weight on his shoulders. Yeada, yeada, And it's probably
too much to say that as he goes this team goes.
But but we probably have to see better from him
this year than we did last year.
Speaker 6 (23:22):
Oh, I think so I'd love to see him get
back to where he was two years ago. Remember he
had that breakout season when Dolaura got hurt. And the
thing that fell last year was his efficiency. You just
look at his his completion percentage and it took a
pretty significant dip last year. And so he needs to
get that back. And I think he's got a chance
for a couple of reasons. One is, I think that
(23:42):
Set Daggy, the new offensive coordinator, has done wonders with him,
and you know, just in terms of his footwork, his
release time, a lot of the things that he just
needed to sharpen up. And the second thing is, and
this is going to sound crazy, but he's got a
bigger roster wide receivers now. You know last year he
had t MAC and after that there wasn't a whole
(24:05):
lot that found any consistency and just watching practice now
there's I think Bobby Wade, the receivers coach, said there's
eight guys right now that he would feel comfortable and
probably will rotate into the wide receiving corps. And so
I think that's going to help know a lot, because
he just he's got a lot more guys that he
feels confident in throwing the ball this year.
Speaker 3 (24:26):
Brand the one practice that I went to you and
I had a little chat about the mystery of the
two lines, the defensive line and the offensive line, and
whether the defensive line has looked good in practice because
the offensive line is bad? Or is the defensive line
really good and the offensive line isn't?
Speaker 2 (24:43):
Isn't bad? I mean? And when are we going to
find that out? Do you think?
Speaker 6 (24:49):
Well? I think probably sooner for the offensive line. Just
in terms of okay, let's see, they had twenty offensive
linemen when camp opened. They've had a couple guys nicked up,
but I think here in the last week or so,
they've been able to get the five that they want
to start in, you know, out there on the field
every day, and so they've got a couple of transfers
(25:11):
at the two tackles that I think could be really good.
I was concerned about the center position, but the camera
who's the transfer from Hawaii, won that job early in
camp and he's been incredibly consistent. And the guard spots,
you know, you've got deuced on the right side and
then the left side. It looks like Michael Wooten right now.
But again they've got some depth there that they can
(25:31):
work with. As you guys well know, the offensive line
is a unit, and when you've got that many new guys,
that's one of the question marks. You know, can they
and when will they play together as a unit. Maybe
it will be tomorrow night, Well we'll find out. On
the defensive side, Having Joe Salavea back coaching that that front,
I mean, my goodness, as he made a difference already,
(25:52):
and also credit the weight room guys because they have
They've increased I think size and strength along that defensive front.
So that's still an area that until we see him play,
we don't know. I think Tray Smith has a chance
to have a monster season upfront this year. We know
the secondary is the best part of the defense in
(26:14):
terms of experience, the most experienced part of the defense,
and so can a lot of these new faces now
fill in and be as good as we hope and
as the coaches hope.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
You talked about two coaches there with Diggy and with
self Seliva, he's improved the coaching situation too. You know,
with the new staff, how do you think that's going
to go?
Speaker 6 (26:36):
Coach neither on the special team's very good. And Danny Gonzalez,
who was on the staff last year and now is
the defensive coordinator. I just love this guy. I mean
every time you hear him talk, he is just full
of enthusiasm and I mean he's got a great track record,
and so I really think that that's going to make
(26:57):
a huge difference. So all three of the coordinators I
think are really quality people. And you know, along and
I'm not saying the others aren't, but those guys all
in new positions this year, and I think they're going
to make a difference.
Speaker 2 (27:09):
All Right.
Speaker 3 (27:09):
So you've taken a lap around the around the Big twelve.
It's very you know, everything you hear is that it's
very up in the air. It's the one league that
you know, there's a bunch of teams that can that
can do well. We saw what Asu did last year,
came from the from the from this the depths and
you know, and won the league. Who who do we
need to keep an eye out uh in the league
(27:31):
this year?
Speaker 6 (27:33):
Boy, That's that's the million dollar question. Maybe And I'm
not going to be able to give you an educated
guess because you don't play a balanced schedule. You don't
see some teams and you know, you don't see Texas
Tech this year, for example, and they're supposed to be
pretty good. Uh So it's it's kind of hard to say.
I think whoever, you know. I think Iowa State is
(27:56):
going to be good again. Kansas State, even though they
lost that game over in double is going to be good.
ASU should be okay if they find, you know, a
running game. Baylor should be improved. And you just go
up and down the roster there and I think all
of them are going to have a chance. I did
look at one thing interesting today and that is that,
(28:18):
as you know, the Big Twelve didn't do a preseason
poll and so I was kind of looking around to
look at some stuff. So I checked out the ESPN
Power Index this morning, and Arizona plays the top sixteens
in their current power index. So that just tells you
a little about the Cats schedule this year.
Speaker 2 (28:41):
I had one I can't remember what it was. Oh,
outside of a player Noah, we already know about Noah,
who are maybe the one or two guys that you
think might have a breakout year.
Speaker 6 (28:53):
Well, I think you know Chris Hunter, who came on
late last season. His last four games were really good
at wide receiver. I think he's got a chance to
maybe be an All conference type of receiver. So I'm
excited to see him. I think a couple of the
other receivers, Tray Spivey one of the transfers in, I'm
interested to see him. He's looked really good in camp.
(29:14):
I'm also interested to see what the tight ends look
like this year. I think Tyler Powell has a chance
to have a big year at that position. On defense,
I mentioned Tray Smith really really liked him, and I
know the coaches are really high on him with his
ability to get to quarterbacks. And then just seeing that
secondary if it's as good as the experience shows, you
(29:35):
know that has a chance to be maybe the best
unit on this team. And you get into a league
with some really good quarterbacks that could pay big dividends.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
Interesting, what's it going to look like tomorrow night? Right,
I'm away has had a game under their belt. As
he said, they didn't look great for a while. They
ended up beating Stanford and made a lot of fun
of Stanford after that, But what do what do we
expect to see? Here's almost seven them have point favorite.
I mean that seems like a lot for a team
that hasn't played going against a team that has.
Speaker 6 (30:06):
Yeah, you know, talking to the Brent Brennan yesterday, and
you know this is as all coaches, you go into
that first game and it's just you know, how do
you go about you know, don't look at the scoreboard,
how do you go about executing offense, defense and special teams?
You know, he worries about things like turnovers and penalties,
things that kind of crop up sometimes early in particularly
(30:29):
when you've got a lot of new guys on the roster.
So I will say this just I think from a
broad perspective, the Wildcats need to win, and I think
they need to look good winning. They don't have to
win by eighteen points. Okay, they don't have to win
by twenty one. They could win by ten. I don't know.
I don't know what the right point spread would be.
I'm just saying if they go out and execute what
(30:52):
they want to do and do it well and play well,
and don't get penalized a lot, don't turn the ball
over I think that's going to show a lot for
the It's also going to give this team of a
boost of confidence because you know, they've got a couple
of teams coming up. I mean, Weber State's not a
big opponent, but Kansas State right after that, and so
you'd love to see them, you know, really play well
(31:13):
in these first two games and give him a shot
against you know, one of the better teams in the league.
So yeah, just go out and win. Just go out
to win and look good doing it.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
Just win, baby, Well, Brian, as always, we appreciate your time.
Take a nap, night's sleep at as many as you
can get in in the next few months.

you know, what happens next year. Okay, cool, we got

What's the word?
Speaker 6 (36:52):
Oh, it's football season.
Speaker 3 (36:58):
You say that like it's a bad thing. I mean,
are you are you excited about it?
Speaker 12 (37:02):
What do you what do you know?
Speaker 2 (37:03):
What do you think?
Speaker 3 (37:04):
No?
Speaker 6 (37:04):
No, no, that that's my accent. That's just that's just
my accent. No, No, I'm excited, Rens. You know, it
just tells us. It tells me that the summers coming
to an end, there's gonna be sports on the TV again,
you know. Yeah, So I'm I'm I'm excited for this year.
(37:26):
I'm excited to see the changes in the team and
the coaching staff, the the schematics of the football team done.
Let me how they're going to play?
Speaker 2 (37:37):
So let me ask you, because this is what I
for all week. They're going to be better. Brian said
this too, they're gonna be better than last year. I
buy that.
Speaker 6 (37:44):
The question is aren't other teams going to be better
to So what do you what do you buy? What
do you buy and what do you sell the of
this team. I buy that we're going to be better.
I think we're going to be I'm looking forward to
seeing Arizona be more better than other teams are because
we got we got we got further to go than
(38:08):
some of these other teams. But at the same time,
you know, some teams that you would think are going
to be better are not going to be better because
of the transfer portal and all the player movement and
things like that, and you know, just just natural progression
of teams. You know, the ninety nine team, after Calvin
(38:28):
Ephan was gone, it lacked you know, there was there
wasn't a runner there, there wasn't a you know, they
didn't have.
Speaker 2 (38:35):
The leaders that they had before.
Speaker 6 (38:37):
You know, they they we thought that they had the talent,
but sometimes it's not just the talent that that makes
a team go. So I'm looking forward to seeing the
team one play better. I disagree with Brian A little
bit in that if in order for if Arizona looks good,
then they're.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
Going to have it.
Speaker 6 (38:58):
They should they should win by a significant number. That
might be fourteen, it might be fifteen, It may you know,
may not be the seventeen, but I wouldn't be surprised
with the twenty one.
Speaker 2 (39:11):
I think that I think.
Speaker 6 (39:13):
Noah's gonna look a lot better this year than he
did last year, only because he's gonna be playing in
a modern offense, right, and I think it's gonna I'm
looking forward to being a lot more timing patterns and uh,
you know, And one thing I am selling is if
you've been watching the press conferences of all the position
(39:37):
coaches and everything, they all have the greatest position room
that they've ever been with, every last one of them.
You know, nobody has any concerns with efforts that nobody
has any concerns with the strength of these guys. They're
you know, they're they're so we're gonna we're gonna see
(39:58):
those things. We're gonna see truly, if we have seven
running backs that can play, we're gonna we're gonna find
out real quick. Right. But I do I do want
to see I do want to see the team do
well so that we can get the second team guys
in the third team guys, get some more guys.
Speaker 3 (40:16):
I'm gonna take issue, Steve, with your comment that you've
been making for years, and it's the first time I'm
taking issue with where you say doesn't everybody get better?
Speaker 2 (40:23):
They don't.
Speaker 3 (40:24):
About half the teams get better and half the teams
get worse. Arizona got worse last year, so not everybody
gets better. Now everybody thinks they're gonna get better, but
they don't. Right, Asu got better, but Arizona didn't get better. Yeah,
Utah didn't get better. Uh, you know, So I'm gonna
say it seems it seems reasonable to think that half
(40:47):
the teams get better, half the teams don't. Some teams
get better, and then you know other teams. Do you
think Ace's gonna be better than last year? I don't
because if they're, if they're better than last year, they're
gonna win the national championship. And I don't see they're
not a national championship team. They may still be very.
Speaker 2 (41:04):
Good, but I don't see them being better. You know.
Let me talk to my attorney about this. One.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
Ohio State Okay, Ohio State won the national championship. Nobody
thinks they're going to be better than last year. So
not they All the teams don't get better.
Speaker 2 (41:20):
I think you took me literally, which I'm fine with
it because I do believe that. But you're you're right
if you know Apple Now.
Speaker 3 (41:26):
Teams get another year of it, have another year of experience, but.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
Some teams don't.
Speaker 3 (41:30):
When you Brian Jeffery say, Arizona's got sixty one new
players on the roster, we don't know if AI Zone
is going to better.
Speaker 2 (41:37):
We won't know for the first and it takes a while.
We won't know about this team for the first month, right,
and like every other team, so we don't know about that.
I I'll let you have that argument. You have the
argument because in the way you put it, Yeah, you
kind of make some sense. One for one for Ja,
twenty five for Steve. I'll give you the one.
Speaker 14 (41:55):
We're good.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
Don help me out here.
Speaker 6 (41:58):
Well, no, it's true. I mean ASU is not going
to be what they were last year. They you know,
they lost, they lost a big part from the center
of their chest when Scataboot ran out of eirability. Sure, right,
(42:18):
I think so because everything went through him. In that
last game again when they were playing Texas, they threw
to him, they ran with him. I don't remember did
he even throw a pass. I think he might so
so so he was, he was, And they can deny
it all day long, and they're, yeah, there's twenty one
(42:39):
other starters on that team, but that guy was sixty
percent of that team. So they don't have to just
replace a running back. They need to replace, you.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
Know, a heart beat.
Speaker 6 (42:50):
They need to replace a leader.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
So we won't know, to your point, and to my point,
we won't know for a while, so we'll see. I
would assume that they're going to be better Arizona, at
least you'd hope.
Speaker 3 (43:00):
That well, because one part of it is they were
so bad last year they almost have to be better.
Speaker 6 (43:05):
Yeah, go ahead, one last thing accidentally, they would have
to be better. But I think I think I think
this schematically, we're going to be better because we're going
to be playing more modern football. If if we are
bigger than we were last year, then that that's gonna
boat well for getting better. I just I just don't want.
(43:26):
I just hope, and I was trying to find it
last year. To see how Brennan coached, because I don't
want him to fall into that. I don't want him
to be Tomi fied where he gets a lead midway
through the second quarter and then tries.
Speaker 2 (43:40):
To run the clock out. Yeah, that is not good.
Speaker 6 (43:44):
And that's because you You've got to be able to
get thirty five guys on the field every Saturday, so
the guys know that they're gonna get playing time even
if they're not the starter. That's going to induce those
guys to stick around and make that step to become
the starter next year. And now it's going to help
keep your roster more together is playing more and more guys.
(44:05):
And the way to do that is if you can
get a lead, a substantial lead, you know, get no
out after the first series in the fourth quarter and
let the other guy finish out the game and let
him run the regular offense and extend the lead. That's
how you're going to keep guys. That's how you you know,
that's going to help you keep important guys is Hey,
(44:27):
you know when we you're going to get to play
thanks to you, guys will stick around for that.
Speaker 2 (44:32):
Thanks ton. Are you going are you going to the game.
Speaker 6 (44:36):
Or no, I'm my plans are still in the air.
I want to go, but I kind of want to
stay home and watch, you know, watch be able to
see the replays and all that.
Speaker 2 (44:45):
Well you are you are, thanks man. Thanks.
Speaker 6 (44:50):
No, I want to go, but if I go, I'm
staying to the end.
Speaker 18 (44:53):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (44:54):
Thanks, Thanks, I mean him just saying that. It kind
of gives you the way that some fans are to
your point, Jay, Yeah, okay, but we won't know good
how good is good until two or three games? Yep,
you know for everybody? Yeah, because what if a issue
found that right guy to fill in the hole. What
(45:14):
if Ohio State is that you're gonna come out and
kill Texas to oh wow, I.
Speaker 5 (45:19):
Think it's a lot tougher with that game to call.
Speaker 7 (45:21):
Yeah, just because of everybody who left, not even just
the players. I mean, Chim Kelly was offensive coordinator, and
I forget where he is now, but I'm pretty sure
he's in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (45:31):
We might have gone so Francisco, I can't remember.
Speaker 7 (45:34):
I don't think he's on the Niners, but he's an
offensive coordinat You would know about it.
Speaker 2 (45:38):
You have the thing right in front of you. It's
called Google. We'll check. Anybody else want to call, please
do get us to the end of the first hour
five two zero four one, six seventy four forty. I
think Don's points were pretty good.
Speaker 3 (45:49):
Yeah, no, I agree, I mean again Don. I think
Donald is a very typical fan. Loves and loves the Wildcats,
you know, goes to the games most of the time.
But he's like, like Brian said, there's so many people
who are just gonna wait and see.
Speaker 2 (46:03):
And that's that's who the fans are. Let me ask
you because we hear you know, the typical Arizona fans.
We've heard it for years. Uh too hot, too cold,
just right, you know the Goldilocks uh fans today tomorrow?
What's the perfect time, the perfect time to go? There
isn't a perfect time on Arizona exactly. Okay, every time.
Speaker 3 (46:25):
Every time is a bad time in tias on Arizona,
according to our freaking fans.
Speaker 2 (46:30):
Okay, to me, the perfect time is whatever time the
game is. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (46:35):
Yeah, And until you approach it that way, you're gonna
find a reason not to go.
Speaker 2 (46:39):
Tomorrow, it'll be about ninety five.
Speaker 3 (46:41):
It's not gonna get it's I'm gonna hit one hundred tomorrow,
get the hell over to the CAI.
Speaker 2 (46:44):
So ninety five at seven thirty, you'll get home and
then you say, oh, I don't get home to them club.
You know, you know how it is started?
Speaker 5 (46:51):
See what you got to do on Sunday. Let me
start NFL on Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 7 (46:56):
Yeah, I don't know kind of to that point before
because I used to live in Service then I used
to drive up like every day and stuff like that,
and so I bought a couple of tickets before I
started actually like attending U of A. And so I mean,
I I it doesn't matter to me if it's a
good game. If I think it's a good game or
a chance for like that, it could be a good game.
Speaker 5 (47:17):
I'm gonna go.
Speaker 2 (47:17):
You are you are the not the norm here? Yeah, no,
you're j J. No, You're not the norm because people
aren't spending the money to go to a game like
that unless it's you know, a house, the old house,
heater o Iowa or whatever, because a lot of those
people are living here already.
Speaker 5 (47:33):
Yeah, And that's kind of what I mean.
Speaker 7 (47:34):
Like I remember I went to the Oregon game, and
I went to the Mississippi State game. I think the
year that's in Fish's second year. And I mean it
was a good time. I mean it, don't get me wrong,
it was a bit it was a bit one sided,
but I mean it was a good time. But I
just love football, so you know.
Speaker 2 (47:49):
Yeah, we'll see what happens. I think. I think, well,
it's one of my games tonight, so we'll see what
that or tomorrow. So I won't say what I want
to say later.
Speaker 6 (47:59):
You haven't picked.
Speaker 2 (48:01):
There's on the game. Yeah, and Arizona's going to cover.
I'm not saying it, but no, I'm not playing it.
Speaker 7 (48:07):
Stuff called yeah, stuff call, especially just because of how
last year it's too.
Speaker 2 (48:11):
Many, it's too many points.
Speaker 3 (48:12):
And I you know, and again I took Wisconsin last
night and I took uh.
Speaker 2 (48:18):
Did you put it on the schedule? No?
Speaker 3 (48:19):
No, No, I mean I hit a little five dollar part. Yeah,
but I had Wisconsin last night, and I had who played?
Speaker 2 (48:26):
Who played?
Speaker 21 (48:26):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (48:28):
No?
Speaker 2 (48:29):
I had Cincinnati. Who's the other?
Speaker 6 (48:33):
No?
Speaker 22 (48:33):
No, god dang Wisconsin and ESZ who was the other
game last night? Oh you said it was a big
time team, right, yeah, No, there was another big ten
mm Minnesota and you know Minnesota. They both was constin
Minnesota were giving up seventeen and a half and they
didn't cover, and then I thought that was really stupid
(48:56):
in the in the first game on a Thursday night
give up that many points and so as better And
for that reason, I'm not touching the Arizona again.
Speaker 2 (49:05):
Better. Yeah, yeah, Okay, I'm.
Speaker 5 (49:07):
Really excited to see Alabama and Florida State too.
Speaker 2 (49:10):
Had a lot of first games, like you talked about,
that's part of the height.
Speaker 3 (49:13):
That's one that I can't I'm just decaid. I'm staying
away from that. Yeah, I can't, you know, Yeah, it
really is. Well, a lot of people are saying Alabama
is gonna better than people think, and then they I
want to have this conversation with you about about Kaylen
de Boor and uh and Jed Fish. You know, I
just don't know if Kaylen de Boor is in a
(49:34):
good place at Alabama.
Speaker 2 (49:37):
No, I agree with you. It's these guys who have
this delusions of grander, they leave and then they find
out they're not as good as they think they are.
I think that Ged will find that out soon, whether
he is or he isn't. And then the Boar too,
because he's so nondescript. Yeah, and and and that's it.
Speaker 3 (49:55):
I mean he doesn't just I'm just not I just
and then he he's not even a from that area
or anything like that.
Speaker 2 (50:03):
I catch you, I catch you. But if he can coach,
you can coach. We'll see what happens. He's kind of
like the Mike Price when you remember when he was there,
it was kind of like an odd fit and it
didn't fit that long. So we'll see at about three
or four, four more minutes. Yep, okay again one more
time if you want to call five two zero, four one, six,
seventy four forty. We did take the call. But a
(50:25):
lot of good games. What what time did you say?
The big game was tomorrow Texas nine o'clock. Oh goodness,
it's a big noon kickoff. We'll be here tomorrow about well,
not about at four o'clock. We're going to do the
Honley Huddle with the Lamont and Ricky brothers, the Hunley brothers.
I'll be the host and Ray will be behind the
scenes here taking calls or whatever. So that starts at four,
(50:49):
so we'll be in plenty of time to get in.
After that game, there's another game at New who's the
big game. There's a bunch of games at New Yeah,
I mean, who's you said? The Florida State.
Speaker 5 (50:57):
Florida State in Alabama's the big one at twelve thirty.
Speaker 2 (50:59):
Okay, so we'll be probably watching that from here. You
got Tennessee, Syracuse a New Well at nine our time? Man, Alabama?
Speaker 3 (51:09):
Yeah, yeah, Alabama's a twelve thirty our time, so that's
a three thirty.
Speaker 6 (51:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (51:12):
Part of it is because we haven't really done much
in three months. I'm talking the world outside of sports,
right yeah, And this is how we always are, yeah,
outside of COVID.
Speaker 6 (51:20):
Remember when COVID hit and we were kind of looking
at each other. One's going to start and one's gonna
start talking to all these people.
Speaker 2 (51:25):
And that tough day.
Speaker 7 (51:27):
That was a tough day getting the notificate, like every
notification like oh, this league isn't playing, this league isn't playing,
and it.
Speaker 5 (51:33):
Was just like, man, what am I supposed to watch? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (51:36):
You where are you living? Then?
Speaker 7 (51:37):
I was in Poland, Oh, Poland. I was still waking
up for the games, though, Jay, he was depending on.
Speaker 2 (51:44):
Our country, depending on our country.
Speaker 5 (51:46):
I think the earliest I woke up, I probably.
Speaker 7 (51:51):
Probably woke up like a three forty five or one
time to watch the Niners game.
Speaker 21 (51:54):
Wow, thank you for your service, man, oh Man, thank
you for the support, man.
Speaker 7 (52:05):
But yeah, exciting stuff. I mean, you get to you
get to get your first look at Texas Tech. That's
obviously a big question within the league. They no one
like crazy, It's Arkansas Pine Bluff. But I mean still,
I think I think there's a difference between because you
see a guy, right you see, like take last weekend
for example, you see Hawaii play or something like that,
(52:25):
and it's like, Okay, you expect Arizona to be better
than Stanford, so you can't you know, Whay is going
to look good against them, a lower Stanford team. But
I think what really matters is the ability that you
see out of the players, you know what I mean,
the physicality, the speed, how prepared they look.
Speaker 5 (52:41):
I mean, you saw the grit from the quarterback.
Speaker 7 (52:43):
That's obviously going to be a big story coming maybe
coming in and leaving that game. So I think it
you know, it doesn't just always come down to who
they're playing, but maybe how they play against them. If
it looks like they're you know, her into the ball,
all that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (53:01):
But we'll see how healthy the quarterback is because that
plays a part too.
Speaker 7 (53:05):
Yeah yeah, And like one was saying, I mean it
looked like a nasty hit. I thought it would have
been like a ligament or something. But yes, it's his ankle.
So but you were one on days all Mexicans looking like.
Speaker 2 (53:20):
Toy to be. He's just a co host of this today.
Let's go take a break and get the breaking news. Yes,
