fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera, and today with me is
one holding the controls down and Blake Eagrew will be
here at any moment.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
It's gonna have some run some laps. Again. I think
he just likes running laps.

Speaker 4 (00:32):
He was a former athlete, so yeah, but I think
that former thing is pretty bold in bold letters former former,
former and bold.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (00:41):
Yeah, he'll be here in a seconds, so we'll have them. Well,
let's just say he likes to stay in the heat
or something. Yeah, okay, Yeah, we're gonna have a different shoot.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
That's why we're here. Yeah, what did it say in
your car? One thirteen?

Speaker 5 (00:52):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (00:52):
One eleven?

Speaker 6 (00:53):
One eleven? But when I first got in and it
was probably like one eighteen.

Speaker 4 (00:56):
Yeah, yeah, me too, I lost one seventeen. This is
again two years in a row. You lived here.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
I've been here a long time, and I.

Speaker 4 (01:04):
Think I can't take this stuff anymore. I'm gonna have
to go into the hills.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
Yeah, you have to.

Speaker 6 (01:11):
It's only getting hotter too. Do you know what's heating up?
What about the football? Football's heating up. We're a getting
closer and closer. NFL preseason starts this week, starts Thursday.
What a segment. Who's who's playing? I'm not sure. I'm
not sure. I haven't looked. I know, I know some
of the.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
As you can tell, I don't care much about the preseason.
Uh you don't. Well, that can be said about a
lot of things.

Speaker 6 (01:34):
Good you paid attention. But I'll get to it. Some
of the stuff I'm breaking news. Some of the teams
announce their quote quote unquote starting quarterbacks for the preseason
games for the first week. Let's see Thursday, it'll be
the Colts and Ravens, Bengals and Eagles, Raiders and Seahawks. Okay, cool,

(01:55):
primetime matchup for Steve over here Thursday night. Yeah, yeah,
I think I have been. I have to watch my hair.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
Then you gotta get your goody sleep. I need a
lot of time. I'm going to sleep right now for
a while. It is what it is. It's eating up,
eating up, hitting up. You going on with their training
camp all training camp.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Three weeks away. We'll see how good they're gonna be.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
I didn't realize why I played in the game a
week before, so.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
They usually do. I usually play that week zero.

Speaker 6 (02:24):
The first home game, week minus one, minus one, week
zero whatever you minus.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
One, minus one, minus one one.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
Yeah, you go into the games. You're gonna go for
desert warm? Is that what you're should be? I should be.
But we'll see.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Who knows. If you find a job. Anybody looking for
a guy?

Speaker 4 (02:42):
I have one for you, the one and only on
a Tuesday, on a Monday, Tuesday. Whatever you need me, Yeah, Tuesday, Wednesday.
Then we got ready and then you know it's coming back.
I talked to me yesterday, Kobe, Kobe, Kobe. And then
I'll probably get another intern from the ubay, you know,
just they're all dying to get on the show. Two
long line waiting outside. Yes, yeah, you are my favorite

(03:08):
enter the best intern.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
There we go.

Speaker 6 (03:12):
I mean that means a lot more and more than
you think.

Speaker 4 (03:15):
Well, you just gotta get a job. He's gotta figure
out what we're gonna place you here.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
It'll come. Yeah, Well for those who.

Speaker 4 (03:21):
Wait, yes, yes, okay, Hey, anybody you want to call
five to two oh save us five two oh four,
one sixty. We're gonna have an eclectic type of show today,
actually Tucson centric. We're gonna have mister John Showns the second.
He's with the Southern Arizona Chamber. I think it is
as I think I remember putting that on Facebook.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
And then we're gonna have Lance Jones.

Speaker 4 (03:46):
I don't know his title specifically, he's just right off
the top of my head, but he's with the new
velodrome that's gonna be.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
Coming out here in uh.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
I think October will be finally finished, and that's a
big deal to obviously the cyclist out there. And it's
gonna be near the the Pema County fair Oh really yeah,
way out there, so the fair grounds, and so I
think it's gonna be adjacent to that or not. I
think it's gonna be adjacent to that. So a lot
of stuff going on over there, should be a lot

(04:13):
of fun for the cyclist, and it's kinna be one
of the premier ones, you.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
Know how Oh wow, a new building, it's cool. No
one has this stuff.

Speaker 4 (04:20):
And then it's gonna be one of those, and just
in time for the preparation for the US Olympic team. Yeah,
so they'll be partty down here a lot training because
there are very few of them, and won'll find out
more by about that stuff from that's Jones. Yeah yeah uh.
And then there's a lot of stuff going on to
the locally with sports. So John is gonna be coming

(04:40):
on and explaining some stuff to us. And obviously Blake
knows a lot about all this stuff that's going on
as well. I'm assuming that the mccabee games are still
going you know, the big games with the the Mouncoby
games from all the people for all Jewish people from
all over the country world. Maybe, but TCC never heard
of it, really, No, we had, we had a lot
of it. Oh no, the radio not too long ago.

(05:05):
It started last week last Monday.

Speaker 5 (05:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (05:07):
Maybe my guy here will tell me. The comic game
is still going on. No, they just finished when they
finished Sunday. Yes, those closing ceremonies.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Okay, good, that's why we have you here to run
late and snow. Yeah, listen, I apologize.

Speaker 7 (05:24):
I apologize for making yourself you stop a water burgers,
nice kinder Berger and nice kicks two years.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
Thanks you watched them and straight they're my first time
wearing them.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Okay, no wonder, yeah, no wonder. He was late, So
you busy.

Speaker 5 (05:44):
At all?

Speaker 3 (05:46):
He's just I got nothing going on at all. Well
you have enough time for me. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (05:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (05:52):
Things are good. Things are moving in a lot of
different directions. But good.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
I heard we've got lands on today talk about the Bevelodrome.

Speaker 4 (05:58):
Yeah, that's chosen. You don't know if you know John
shows shows, he's with the UH. I just have it
up here with the Southern Arizona Chamber of Commerce, Chamber
of the Southern Arizona, So he's they have a lot
of stuff going on.

Speaker 7 (06:10):
Yeah, chamber's got a ton I just uh, Michael Gamon
and are pretty close and just met with him last
week and tell me Michael Gamon. Yeah, he used to
be the president of the Metro Chamber and then when
they merged.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
He's on just now now. Oh okay, oh okay.

Speaker 5 (06:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (06:24):
So you guys are you guys are killing it. You're
and you're back for another year in your capacity? Can
I say that?

Speaker 7 (06:29):
I think you can say that. I mean, I don't know,
and oh my my board might decide to fire me
tomorrow and then I'm because I've been here every day.
Didn't you care whether I'm on the air or not.
He's gonna be standing here waiting for you. Let me
hire him board every day. Yeah, there'll be a lot
of letters like that. That's sick of thought. Yeah, no, good,
Oh congrats. If I could say that, I don't even

(06:51):
know if that's true. Yeah, okay, just say we look
the future looks a little brighter, okay for southern Arizona tourism.
And you've done it, not even close. I mean, how
long have I been on your show? It's not even
like that'll tell you I didn't. He can tell you. You
don't listen to anybody. I think you say it. Yeah, well,

(07:11):
good to see you. It's been long a week. Yeah week,
we got one who's back, trying to get him a job. Yeah,
try and try and try and wait and be impatient.
How's it going? Would you consider a move up north?
If I could maybe pull some strings?

Speaker 8 (07:27):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Possibly? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (07:29):
Yeah, possibly a guy with the jobs the boss, possibly
right now?

Speaker 6 (07:34):
Yes, possibly, I mean I need a little bit more info.

Speaker 7 (07:38):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
I mean I have just if he could just pull
the strings, that's what you say.

Speaker 7 (07:41):
If I am in some conversations. Yes, yeah, first you
have to do some stuff here.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
It don't go just right.

Speaker 4 (07:48):
Yeah, okay, how's it going and everything going all right?
I'm sure you sad news with the soccer stuff from yesterday. Yeah,
really sad, really sad news. Just the impact. It's a
big blow to the women's soccer community and the soccer community.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
I was glad. I mean no, I mean I'm glad.

Speaker 7 (08:05):
I was happy to see the coverage that she received,
still is and still it was receiving because all the
impacts that she had on so many different lives. But
forty five, forty four four four just.

Speaker 4 (08:18):
Turned for four and she actually if anybody didn't listen yesterday,
they set up a GoFundMe page for her. You can
just search Kelly Pierce gofund me. And the last night
checked he was like thirty one thousand for her for
her kids, her kids or two younger kids.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
Yeah she has three, but she has two younger kids, so.

Speaker 4 (08:36):
Yeah, yeah of a player, he go a coach, Yeah yeah, yeah.
Let me ask you because I asked her mentor you
probably know Amy Garlic, she was at Mountain View successful
if she two song? What what do you think? And
this is you know how this show is? It's random, right,
whatever pops in up? We asked a good coach, what's
the market? Have I asked you this? What's marks a
good coach? A good coach?

Speaker 5 (09:00):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (09:00):
For me, it's the impact that you've made on the
players that you've had. So if they come back, if
you've got a group group that's stay in touch, that
contact you, or they hold you in high regard, I
think that's the impact.

Speaker 4 (09:11):
But on the field, like, so you're out and you're
you're a new guy on a team X and what
are you hoping to.

Speaker 7 (09:17):
Get too early? Yes, that's to let me, let me
dive a little deeper into that question. If I may, like,
you're you are you speaking at the high school level,
I'm just speaking just in general.

Speaker 3 (09:27):
In general, In general.

Speaker 7 (09:29):
I mean getting your players to play above their their
skill talent, and by motivating them that and and and
trusting them to believe that they're better than what they Yeah,
a few coaches do that. It's really hard. You get
guys that will run through a brick wall right right right,
And it's.

Speaker 4 (09:45):
Because of respect probably how you handle them, how you
treat them.

Speaker 7 (09:50):
And they know that you care for them as much
as almost anybody.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
Else in their lives.

Speaker 4 (09:54):
So's say, in your lifetime, you've had maybe twenty coaches,
maybe give or take. Yeah, of those twenty, how many
were the man? How many of those fit that bill?

Speaker 5 (10:05):
Three? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (10:05):
I know it's isn't it? Three?

Speaker 8 (10:08):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (10:08):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (10:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (10:10):
Why do you think that? I listen.

Speaker 7 (10:14):
I mean, I've been brutally honest on the show, and
I'll be brutally honest now. I mean the people growing
up I had, I had I had one coach growing
up like that, and then I had two in pro bal.

Speaker 3 (10:24):
That was it.

Speaker 7 (10:26):
And the coaches that at the high school level or
the collegiate level, for some degree, for for for whatever reason,
for whatever reason, just didn't care. Yeah right, And that's
crazy to me, Like, why are you there?

Speaker 3 (10:40):
Didn't care?

Speaker 4 (10:41):
Well, they cared about their job, right, but they didn't
care about the players. Didn't care about the players, Yeah,
didn't care. Yeah.

Speaker 7 (10:48):
I mean, I'm not gonna name names, but there was
a you know, my senior year in high school, there
was probably six or seven of us, at least seniors
that were good enough to play at the next level.
And I think I was the only one that went on. Yeah,
and we were all atking for what he is that
they just didn't get noticed, just no contact, no help,
no motivation there. I mean, you have a group of
kids in the place that I grew up that wanted

(11:09):
to go on and play at the next level and
that were very I mean absolutely good enough to play
some degree somewhere, right, dun't.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
Yeah, that's kind of I was just kind of maybe
relating to to Kelly, who's a very good coach. He
got she got a lot out of her girls when
she played a lot of titles that doesn't happen by accident,
and and and just kind of we talk about philosophy, right,
things like that, Well.

Speaker 3 (11:30):
Why are you there?

Speaker 7 (11:31):
I don't care if I exactly if my personal feelings
for the player is is not in a positive light.
I still want to see that human being succeed or
get a chance. I would never take a call and
be like this is a like you you never want
to see this player on your field. I might, I
might say it's not a good figure for your program.
But he's got some growth to do. There's some or

(11:52):
she's got some growth to do. There's some areas that
they need to work on.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
Could you coach. How many years.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
Ten le's fourteen? Did you ever have that conversation with
a kid? Oh?

Speaker 3 (12:04):
Yeah, plenty.

Speaker 4 (12:04):
You have to do this, yeah, absolute already get a call.
Maybe it's a good topic entry. We would always do
uh entry level stuff.

Speaker 7 (12:12):
That and then you do you do anh yeah, exit
interview every time.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
After cool, let's talk about that. We gotta call Hello,
you're on the air, nine on the ball. Who's this?

Speaker 5 (12:21):
Hey?

Speaker 3 (12:23):
Hey John? Hey John, you're early, You're way early.

Speaker 5 (12:26):
Well, actually you're.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
But three minutes start because we haven't yet to go
to uh to break yet. So how much is break
for four minutes? Give us?

Speaker 5 (12:35):
Give us as you guys.

Speaker 4 (12:37):
Okay, wait, we're gonna take your break. We're gonna take
a break here in about two minutes and then come back.
So call us about in four minutes. Well okay, thanks, thanks.

Speaker 5 (12:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (12:46):
I'm not sure where we went with it with the coaches,
but I just kind of started talking about coaches because
you know, they're hard to find. I mean, the good
ones are hard to find because they carrying coaches. Yeah,
they carry And then we've talked about it. You even
at the collegiate level level, you get coaches that get
into that position or circumstance where they're no longer able
to coach because now they're a manager, so they have
to oversee a program, they have to oversee everything, so

(13:07):
their day to day activities are no longer with a
player coach. You you're not on social media much, are you?
I'm not if at all. There was a great who's
a great Texas baseball coach?

Speaker 3 (13:18):
Yeah, and he was. You have him going into did
you see that?

Speaker 7 (13:21):
Yeah, and he's just ripped into his I played with
a bunch of guys that played at Texas.

Speaker 4 (13:25):
Okay, so he just went in and ripped him. It
was f bomb after this. Do you guys look like this?
Blah blah blah?

Speaker 3 (13:29):
And I'm thinking, but they go there knowing what they're
in for as an expectations. I'm assuming they know.

Speaker 4 (13:35):
And he's just and I'm not sure why we're talking
about why I'm talking about this, but you have those
guys who probably got that and said we better get
our stuff together, you know, or else it is gonna
happen again.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
It's not for me.

Speaker 7 (13:47):
You have a reactionary piece. You have one that gets
scared in that position, right, one that gets angry that
says at this guy, I'm leaving. Or you get one
guy that says, Okay, f this guy, but I'm gonna
prove I'm gonna prove them wrong. And you want that.
You want that guy. Yeah, I think there could be
another one.

Speaker 5 (14:04):
I don't know what is, but.

Speaker 3 (14:04):
Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 7 (14:05):
Or you've get a fourth situation where this person goes,
all right, I'm motivated nowt like, this is a guy,
this is what I need to hear. I had a guy,
Guy Kanti, who was the minor league coordinator for the
Mets at the time, was with the Dodgers forever. Like
at the big league level. Everything we were doing first
to first and third situations where runner leaves early from first,
you've got to step off, check the runner at third,

(14:26):
and then make sure you give it up to either
the second basement or short stop. And I kept screwing
it up over and over and over, and he pulled
me off the field in front of this is maybe
my first spring training. It might have been extended. To
be honest with you, it might have been extended. So
it's all prospects. He pulls me off the field to
the side and he's mfing me up and down like
literally five minutes of nothing but mfing me. And it

(14:48):
was the greatest thing ever for me because I said
to myself, I said, I better figure it out. I'm gone, like,
there's no this is either it or not. So I
spent the next night not sleeping and just in my
mind going through that situation over and over.

Speaker 4 (14:59):
Well, it's good for you because a lot of the
guys are in my mind would say I don't need
this crap. It depends who you are how you handle it, right.

Speaker 3 (15:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (15:08):
It also it also it also raises the question of
how much the game actually means that person? Why are
they playing it? Why are you there?

Speaker 5 (15:13):
Right?

Speaker 4 (15:14):
So yeah, no, no, no, that's a good example because
it's very difficult.

Speaker 3 (15:17):
So let's take a break and get ahold of John
after this.

all right around a month and took about a week
of on board and I've been hitting the ground running
ever since.

Speaker 4 (20:27):
And one of the things where many of the things
you wanted to talk about are the great things that
are coming up shortly in the next week or so.

Speaker 5 (20:35):
Yeah, we actually have a Southern Arizona So the Chamber
of Southern Arizona is promoting an athletics rally that's happening
next Tuesday from five to seven on. So it's August twelfth,
and it's going to be at General Benz and it's
a pretty awesome opportunity. It's an opportunity to see representatives
from SC Tucson, the Tucson Mexican Baseball Fiesta, the New

(20:58):
Tucson Baseball Club, the Suson serg Skulls, the Arizona Bowl,
the road Runners, the University of Arizona, and an organization.

Speaker 3 (21:07):
Called Paddle Alley. So all of them are going to
be under one roof.

Speaker 5 (21:11):
And Blake, I believe you're going to be there. Is
that correct?

Speaker 7 (21:13):
Yeah, I'll be there. I'll be there with my with
bells on. It's a phenomenal event. Last year's was great.
You guys did a great job.

Speaker 5 (21:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (21:19):
Yeah. Oh so it's not just not a first time.

Speaker 7 (21:22):
This is the second year, right, John, Yes, I believe
it is.

Speaker 5 (21:26):
And you know, really the whole thing, the the idea
is to promote business here in Tucson, and not just
Tuson but southern.

Speaker 3 (21:32):
Arizona and help connect them with you.

Speaker 5 (21:34):
Know, the sports, uh, the sports franchises so to speak,
and everything that's good that's positive going on in the community.
So it's a great opportunity to get in front of
representatives from all of these different sports programs and and
and really get a chance to meet everybody under one roof.

Speaker 4 (21:49):
So this has gone on for two years now. Who
thought of the like your position, was there somebody else
in that position and they left? Or you know, who
created this how to how is it created?

Speaker 7 (22:01):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (22:01):
And I'm not sure the logistics of how it all
came together to begin with. You know, we have a
great organization here and we really try to be proactive
and I think we got out in front of this
a year ago and tried to get in front of
the right you know, get people connected to the community.
You know, Blake, I think you can relate to this.
It's you know, we have a great local sports scheme

(22:21):
here and it's coming gone. But it's really about connecting
businesses and the community to some of these organizations themselves.
And so we just feel like it's a great opportunity
for all, you know, all people to come together and
support things that are positive in this community, you know,
and and kind of pay it forward back to the
kids in the community as well.

Speaker 7 (22:40):
I think you hit the nail on the head there, John,
And it's blurring lines between the different atmospheres, right. I
had this conversation with Chairman Rex Scott for the Board
of Supervisors yesterday and I was saying, you know, to
be able to blur the line between workforce, tourism, film
and sports, for us is simple. If it's here, it'll
bring more people here, It'll establish a bigger culture, a

(23:01):
bigger following that will attract businesses, that will create jobs,
will create better lives all together. So I think what
you're doing and what you're saying is spot on.

Speaker 3 (23:12):
Well.

Speaker 5 (23:12):
And you know, I come from this community. I was
born and raised in Tucson, and you know, kind of
give a shout out to the Kinki stores. One of
the things I did as a kid was I played
Richard Rev Junior golf and those you know summertimes summer
golf tournaments were sponsored by local business. But part of
what we did was we went and we watched the Toros.
We went and we watched the U of A. And

(23:35):
you know, as a kid growing up with the community,
I looked up to those athletes, I looked up to
those franchises, and you know, it's it was a great
way to learn sports. It was a great way to
learn sportsmanship and how to be respectful in the community.
And next thing, you know, that shapes you know, tomorrow's
business leaders. So you know, anything that's typed to sports
locally here and can drive you know, people going.

Speaker 3 (23:54):
And eating dinner before and after a game.

Speaker 5 (23:57):
Going and visiting a shop nearby, you know, going into
the Arizona both things like that. It's just all those
things are going to reflect well in our community.

Speaker 4 (24:03):
So at the end of the day, in the shorty
answer this, what's the purpose of bringing everybody together?

Speaker 5 (24:11):
Well, it's just like exactly what Blake said.

Speaker 3 (24:14):
You know, there's no wrong way to network.

Speaker 5 (24:16):
There's no wrong way to bring business and the community
and baseball and all the sports that we offer, football,
the yoga, you know, all these things, they're all good
things that impact the community. So we want to help
connect that. You know, we want to promote local business
and drive that within the community and help them to
grow and prosper. And we want these all these different

(24:37):
entities that are going to be attending to grow and prosper.
You know, the more that they're the events are attended
that they put on, the more money gets pumped into
our economy. So it's just a win win for all
the things. You know, it's a great opportunity to do
things with the family and spend time with with your kids,
and just to get out and do something that's you know,
that positively impacts our community and to get out and

(24:59):
see role models with the brand.

Speaker 3 (25:00):
So Blake, did you go this to this last year?
Did you see?

Speaker 7 (25:03):
Yeah, it was it was amazing. That's where I got
to talk with Adia Burns a lot or Barnes when
she was there. I mean, you had Tommy Lloyd, they
had everybody there, right, and then you had from a
public sector, you are from a professional sector. There you
go trying to find words in my mind. At this
point you were able to then have conversations with the

(25:24):
FC two son with the Roadrunners. And this year, like
John said, you'll have Mexican Baseball Fiesta, You'll have Tucson
baseball team, the Sugar Skulls. So from an interactive standpoint
in sports, you can't find a better I think my
money a better event than what they're putting on right now.

Speaker 3 (25:39):
And we talk how many times did we talk about this?
Maybe a month ago?

Speaker 4 (25:42):
Almost every day, every time you were on everybody pulling
the same rope to help each other.

Speaker 7 (25:48):
Yeah, and John, I know you're new to this position,
but you're a two son in the conversation that Steve
and I have had, and Wan has been this that
you know, and and Kim Adair, who's the president of
the Aerson A Snoop dogg Arizona Ble says this all
the time. I think she's going to get it tattooed.
As you know, rising tide lifts all ships. But it's true,
right if we can if we can create success around

(26:09):
what we're trying to accomplish, whether it's one team or
all teams, I think we all have a better chance
of succeed in the long.

Speaker 5 (26:14):
Term a hundred percent. And not just that, but it
just has a positive impact. You know, the kids that
are around this, they have heroes, they have athletes that they.

Speaker 3 (26:25):
Can look up to.

Speaker 5 (26:26):
I mean I learned the fundamentals of sports by watching
the u of a growing up, by watching Kenny Lockkin
come and play it. You know, a high corbett, you know,
things like that, and there's it's it's multifaceted. Yes, it's
a great way as a business to be recognized, to
be in front of organizations where maybe you know that
investment dollar matters for you as a local business here.

(26:47):
And it's also a great way to positively impact the
youth of the community. So, you know, we want to
focus on positive stories and we want to drive and
promote things that are good within the community. And this
is a great opportunity for a lot of people to
come together.

Speaker 3 (27:00):
John.

Speaker 7 (27:00):
Long term, what do you guys, train, what do you
want to do with this event? Because it is it's
a phenomenal event. You're in year two. It usually takes
about two to three, maybe three to four years to
really get the event under your belt and start running
it on a we'll say a machine base. What is
it long term that you guys want to do with
this event that the community can help you with.

Speaker 5 (27:18):
Well, it's connecting everybody, you know. I mean everybody is
seeking similar things. You know.

Speaker 3 (27:24):
The entities that are here.

Speaker 5 (27:26):
Are looking for people to invest within them. We're looking
for investors, new investors within our chamber. You know, it's any.

Speaker 3 (27:31):
Exciting time for us.

Speaker 5 (27:32):
As some corridor and the Twosum Metropolitan Chamber merged. Now
we are one big entity that is the Chamber of
Southern Arizona. So from our standpoint, we want to grow
and promote and bring in new business and then also
help our local businesses here to grow. But we want
to connect, you know, decision makers with the right people
and help everybody to prosper. Like you said, if everybody,

(27:55):
if you know, these entities all succeed, it's only going
to have a trickle down effect. That's positive, that's going
to things that are good for the community, and sports
is one of those things, like music that brings people together.
So really it's about driving business and helping to promote
business within the community, and sports is just a super
great platform to do that.

Speaker 4 (28:12):
So you said, this is next Tuesday, five to seven.
Where again and who's allowed to go?

Speaker 5 (28:20):
So General Benz is going to be hosting it five
to seven on August twelfth. Members wemside investors have a
discounted rate and then anybody can attend, So it's more
of an adults event. It's one more of an adult
networking thing. But it's a great happy hour and anybody
can contact us at the Chamber of Southern Arizona and

(28:40):
we can help you get registered and look forward to
seeing as many people there as we can get.

Speaker 4 (28:44):
No, it's a perfect This is like right in the
wheelhouse that we've been talking about. Have everybody coming together.
Are there anybody that you wish you would have that
isn't involved now?

Speaker 5 (28:56):
Well absolutely, you know, we'd love to talk, you know
as we road this. You know, we would love to
include the com Key stores and and you know the
golf tournament that comes, the Old Tour and TJ You know,
I'm gonna sit with him Friday, okay and just kind
of learn more about their organization as a nonprofit. But yes,
I mean, anything that's a Southern Arizona related sport, you know,
makes sense for us to partner with for the future. So,

(29:19):
you know, it's like I said, we offer a great
platform to help drive business to these entities and bring
you know, collaborate, bring everybody together under one roof, and
you know, hopefully the positive effects of everybody prospering from
this will just help to grow this event above and
beyond the next year's to come.

Speaker 4 (29:37):
So let me ask you, because you're new to this business,
to that company, or to the organization, what's your job now?
Is this one of the many things that you'll be
having or is it all sports related or is it
just a variety of stuff.

Speaker 5 (29:51):
So my job is basically in drive, promote, and drive
new investors to our chambers specifically. And so we just
recently went through a merger and and we came up
super strong and we want to you know, partner with
future businesses that are looking to grow their business. You know, no,
no business is too small and no business is too
big for us to try to work with and help

(30:11):
promote and connect and grow their business. So my job
is to find the new investors to become part of
what we have going on. It's super exciting and it's
a great time, you know, to try and be part
of a great chamber that promotes not just Tucson. You know,
it's it's revolving around too some but it's all Southern Arizona.
We want to bring the community together and you know,

(30:33):
it's it's worth it for all of us to go
and experience these things, to be part of this organization
and also to be part of these sports, you know,
franchises and events as they come along as well.

Speaker 7 (30:43):
Can I John, I'm going to ask you this question.
It's a little deeper on from my standpoint. So I
think many people know this, but it is it is
fascial that most businesses in Southern Arizona are owned by
mom and their mom and pop. Right, they're entrepreneurs, they're
low owned, they're regionally owned. Do you guys have any
plans on maybe hosting an entrepreneur workshop that has a

(31:08):
component for sports where you can tie in particularly new
businesses with our professional and collegiate sporting area. So everybody's
starting to have that like minded ad too as they
move forward.

Speaker 5 (31:22):
Yeah, that's a good question. I know that we have
we're progressing and evolving, and so I know that we
have conversations and where we see twenty six going might
be a little bit different from where we're at in
twenty five. But yes, you know, we have an Emerging
leaders program, we have an ambassadorship program, a military affairs committee,
so we have a lot of different things that you

(31:43):
can do now to be part of that. But as
far as entrepreneuring and growing, you know, it's really about
you know, one one person in one company at the
time and trying to get them connected. But you know,
as far as ideas and whereever evolving where this might
be a year or two from now from where it
is today, you know that's those are good questions that

(32:06):
you know, others within my organization will probably better answer
a little more than I can at this point.

Speaker 7 (32:10):
Yeah, that makes complete sense. And I just think maybe
we sit down with Michael and David and maybe even
Melissa Andy and those guys and maybe talk about the
future with this event, about making a day long event
where you have the public has more access to different
ideas from a workshop standpoint, but it's really sports bound
and how our community continues to grow within the sports world,

(32:34):
you know.

Speaker 5 (32:34):
And one of the things we have as a small
business council.

Speaker 3 (32:36):
But what we want to do is collaborate.

Speaker 5 (32:39):
So there's no ideas that are right or wrong, you know,
it's it's about coming together and making the community stronger.
So we're very open to ideas and concepts that can
help everybody prosper and grow. So you know, I look
forward actually to speaking to you a little bit more
in the future about just ways we can work together
and ideas that we can all have to help, especially
trying it to sports, you know, kid growing up here,

(33:01):
Like I said, I mean I personally looked up to
some of the athletes who came through, you know, and
prayed for the Toros. You know. I circled back to
nineteen eighty eight and beyond with the year of the
basketball team, and so you know, I cherished some of
those things that my dad and I can still talk
about and things that bring us together, you know, And
so we want to help, you know, the next generation

(33:22):
have some of those memories that I was able to experience.

Speaker 4 (33:24):
Yeah, I think a lot of people are still here
who remember those great times, right because they still talk
about him like crazy. Hey, John, I know you're a
former former athlete golfer. In fact, I was just talking
to Blake about and maybe you listened the number of
coaches he's had, and I threw out twenty. You know,
just for a round you maybe had maybe last maybe
ten or whatever. Given golf, how many were actually good?

Speaker 5 (33:50):
Well, you know, you picking good question. So I only
took golf lessons from one guy here locally in the community,
and that was Willie Kane. And he was the head
pro at you know that that name is pretty popular
with in Tucson, But he was the head pro at
Randolph and and and before that a silver bell and
so I had one voice, and so that was that

(34:10):
was great for golf. But the great thing about coaching
and sports and things like that is there's little things
that you take from everybody. And you know, I always
tell people the worst handshake in life is when you
get beat at something and you've got to shake somebody's
hand out of sportsmanship and respect. But you know it's
if you're a competitor, there's nothing to eat set you

(34:33):
worse than getting beaten because then you either have to
go to work or you know, somebody was able to
do something at a higher level in you. So it
made me. I always took it as a challenge and
that made me go to work to be better. But uh,
you know, I would say that most I would think
that most coaches do a great job because they do
a lot as far as reinforcing values, ma'am sir, please

(34:55):
thank you. You know, sportsmanship, etiquette, competition, all those things
are things that are by products in life that come
from a sports background. So you know, most of my coaches,
I don't really look back on it and say that
I ever had any terrible coaches anywhere along the way.
And you know I was looking back on it now.
I'm grateful for the coaching I did receive along the way.

Speaker 4 (35:17):
Okay, along those lines, will leave it at that. We'll
talk again about your thing, the twelfth Gentleman's five to seven.
And did you say they had to register? Just like joke,
some of the yes, whoever wants to attend.

Speaker 5 (35:30):
Yes, they can go to our website or they can
give us a phone call. The chamber sooaz dot com
is they can go there, they can click on the
events page. They'll see it right at the very top
of the screen. And it's super easy to register. If
that's the problem, anybody is able to call us directly,
uh and that phone number seven ninety.

Speaker 3 (35:50):
Two one two one two, and we'll.

Speaker 5 (35:53):
Be happy to take a registration over the phone or online.

Speaker 3 (35:56):
Okay, great. You probably trying to get named and all
that stuff.

Speaker 5 (35:59):
Okay, Yeah, And I just want to leave on this note.
We appreciate everything you guys do. And you know, Steve,
you've been in this community a long time and and
you've written about the sports and I followed you, you know,
for a long darn time in this community. So it's
appreciated what you guys have done.

Speaker 3 (36:14):
All along the way.

Speaker 5 (36:15):
And and you know, it's just we wanna, we want
to everybody's going to prosper together. So we just appreciate
what you do to get the word out about things
like this. And it's very much appreciated from my standpoint.

Speaker 4 (36:27):
Thank you, Thank you, John, Thank you for not aging
me that much. Thank you, John. I appreciate good luck
to here. See John, Yes, sir, okay, cool with that.
I'm going to gloat and you know, walk around and
take a lap here and come back and then.

Hy Welcome back to one on the Ball here on
Fox Sports forteen fifty.

Speaker 3 (40:57):
Steve Rivera, you're Blake.

Speaker 4 (40:58):
Eager and your on So I got a question for
both of you because we just had a guy who's
a native and hasn't left outside of going to school.
You've been here all your life. Outside of the time
you love to kind of pursue your dream. One is
here still and I'm I came and thought I was
gonna leave five years in and I'm still here and
I love it here.

Speaker 3 (41:14):
When did you get eighty seven?

Speaker 4 (41:15):
Summer of eighty seven, almost thirty eight years ago this month,
and you're thinking, Okay, this is I'm not gonna I'm
gonna blow this popsicle stand and I'm gonna become bitter
blah blah. I came from Dallas, so we wanted to
go back.

Speaker 3 (41:28):
Wait, you wanted to go back to that.

Speaker 4 (41:29):
I wanted to be at that level of yeah, what
understood whatever? Because you know, well, I was at the
Dalls Moore. I was an intern of the Dalls Morning News.
I wasn't good enough, you know. I was an intern.
You'd learned stuff and you go to find your right place.

Speaker 3 (41:41):
I love it here. I cover one of the best teams.
Didn't go.

Speaker 4 (41:44):
So why are you here? Why are you here? With
this ambitions? And I'll last one the same thing, And
I hope he's honest with me. But you could possibly
land somewhere else doing what you do. Possibly, I mean,
I know, but why what's my skill? Set I have
never determined. Well, that's I mean, this is where I
create fault in my own self all the time because
I look in the mirror and go, am I worth it?

Speaker 5 (42:05):
Like?

Speaker 3 (42:05):
What is the point of this?

Speaker 4 (42:06):
Well, maybe that's the issue with you mean here is
this a therapy sentience that's no harmonal falut does no wrong?
An Yeah, So you're saying, why do I can why
could you see potential?

Speaker 5 (42:16):
Do you see?

Speaker 4 (42:17):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (42:17):
And I mean I've obviously lived in a lot of
other places for a long time and then continue I
think they're the god. I'm gonna say this like it's
probably enough an analogy. Uh, it's like the boyfriend or
girlfriend that is always you think you can fix them, right,
But there's so much potential in southern Areason. So there's

(42:38):
so much potential, Like there's no other place in the
world like southern Arizona. Name another place there's The ecosystem
is set aside. It's one of it's one of its kind.
The people here are phenomenal, but it's community driven. Everybody
knows each other and that works sometimes in our favor,
but mostly it works against us, like we were just
talking about, because our mentality here is you're gonna fit

(43:00):
before you succeed, you have to prove it to me,
and I think that hinders our ability to go forward.
But I think in the long run, I look at
Tuson with and I'm speaking about two son now, but
Southern Arison a whole because there's so much potential and
I love it.

Speaker 3 (43:12):
It's based to my soul. Well, in what way the potential?
What does that? What does mean? In what way?

Speaker 7 (43:16):
I think there's completely untapped potential on what we're able
to do here. I mean you're talking sports one, I'm
talking about everything. Okay, you disagree with me on that. No,
it's one of the reasons why I love it. We
talked about this and I'm sorry, sorry, Victim, I'm sorry
to bring up Abuquerque.

Speaker 3 (43:29):
I'm not a Albuquque fan. I'm just not a sound
Fay guy. Uh. You see that stuff and you think,
how does that work here? But not here.

Speaker 7 (43:35):
I drive through Albuquerque, we just did a couple of weeks.
I drive through Alberquerae and go, I mean, kudos to them,
it's albert it's Albuquerque. Kudos to them. But the things
they're able to accomplish that El Paso, the things that
they're able to accomplish and we have to be able
to do Like, how are we not doing exactly? What
is the divide here that we're not getting an understanding

(43:55):
and there's got to be a solution that instead of
just causing problems. So yeah, one, what.

Speaker 3 (44:01):
When why haven't you?

Speaker 7 (44:02):
Let one took one step in Kentucky and said, I'm
out of here, man, Mom.

Speaker 6 (44:08):
Dad, don't leave. I'm coming right back in the car,
don't you like? Blake said, it's it's the culture. My
community is here. Yeah, familiar, it's very familiar, very familiar.
Maybe it's just because I'm a little bit younger. I
don't have a lot of history behind me, but I
do see the potential. I do see momentum.

Speaker 4 (44:30):
Yeah, well, let me say this because because I'm not
from here, but I am. You know, did you guys dream?
Didn't you dream?

Speaker 3 (44:36):
Yes? Once? You had a weird one last night?

Speaker 5 (44:39):
Like what I wanted to do?

Speaker 3 (44:40):
Yeah, be an athlete?

Speaker 6 (44:42):
Want I wanted to be that that icon that came
from the University of Arizona.

Speaker 4 (44:47):
At what point did that dream say, Okay, I'm not
gonna be like middle school?

Speaker 3 (44:50):
Okay, okay, okay. Who was your other.

Speaker 6 (44:52):
Dream there was at that time, there was no backup.
It was just education. I'll tell you what dream is, finish.
Dream is to be me, not specific to be me,
but to do what I'm doing. Yeah, am I wrong?

Speaker 5 (45:05):
No?

Speaker 4 (45:06):
I didn't have to be sitting telling you this, but
I had that same dream being me. Not that I'm
a success because I'm not. I could you know what
I'm saying. You want to be a sports but you're
also going to cover something, enjoy your life, maybe not
live luxuriously, but but kind of survive.

Speaker 6 (45:19):
John just said it. Uh, you've been doing this for
many years. You've done it for the community.

Speaker 4 (45:24):
That's what I want to I want to do stuff
for That's that's your dream and I have to tell
you what your dream is. But that's pretty much what
it is. Steeve, you've been doing this for seventy five years.
Yeah no, but you said I got less. You've got
to stop down playing what you're doing. Like you're making
a living doing what you're doing intuson. That's hard to do,
very fortunate, but you've done it at extremely high level.
You've covered two Olympics like that is not just like, oh,

(45:46):
I don't know if I should be here. So what
you're saying is exactly what somebody like want probably wants
and dreams of.

Speaker 3 (45:51):
Right right, And that's why I had to kind of say,
that's your dream. Now, guess what you have to do.

Speaker 4 (45:55):
You don't have to go beat the beat the crap
out of it to get it.

Speaker 3 (46:02):
Yes, did we get to call?

Speaker 5 (46:04):
We did?

Speaker 4 (46:05):
Okay, Vick, Vick, we got time, Vic, So please call
so you know what I'm saying. And then for you
you had this dream? Did you have a baseball dream?
Or you just two years old? That's all, and you
were able to pursue it more than most. I would
say that I accomplished it. And then but then we're
not enough to worry what happened my shirt?

Speaker 3 (46:24):
You got hurt? And then what you have? You have
to have another dream?

Speaker 4 (46:26):
Or yeah, yeah I didn't, Vick, Vick, are you on
the phone?

Speaker 5 (46:33):
What VI?

Speaker 3 (46:34):
What's the word? What's up?

Speaker 5 (46:35):
Vic?

Speaker 3 (46:35):
Give me your dream?

Speaker 17 (46:37):
Hey, Blake, what's happening. I'm gonna just shoot this to you, Blake.
I'm gonna be first in line for tickets on opening
day at the Tucson baseball team. And I'm not like Steve.
I'm a fan, and I will definitely be partying a
hat year round. I mean, uh, but and I just

(47:00):
moved back from LA. I don't know if Steve's told
you in here two years now, and I'll tell you
I could have made the move to like ol Passo.
Would I have hooked up with my Tucson High baseball
buddies and some of them I haven't seen since nineteen
seventy seven, and it's like we never left.

Speaker 5 (47:21):
Yeah, that's right.

Speaker 7 (47:22):
When you can pick up a conversation that you haven't
had in thirty years and there's no skip of a beat.

Speaker 17 (47:27):
And that's just the Tucson community. I believe I could
have made this move. Like if they had said, hey,
move to Alpasso or moved to San Antonio or something,
I couldn't have done it. And here, like I said,
I I mean, heck, I go country dancing and baseball
games and softball games.

Speaker 5 (47:48):
And I have a cousin that's a big time softball stun.
And I that.

Speaker 17 (47:54):
Community has embraced me. Everybody calls me cousin VIC. Tucson
is great. But to jump on that bandwagon about you guys,
I don't know why Arizona football and and and some
of the other stuff don't sell. I mean it's weird.
I mean Tucson Uh, you know the Legion game between

(48:16):
Tucson High and Sunnyside and the championship. There should have
been five hundred people there. Yeah, and it's weird to
me that that they're that there's.

Speaker 3 (48:25):
Not what did this happen? When did this happen?

Speaker 5 (48:29):
Last week?

Speaker 3 (48:29):
See, nobody knows. I didn't know about it.

Speaker 4 (48:31):
Yeah, did do a horrible job of telling people about it.

Speaker 3 (48:35):
But we talked about that.

Speaker 7 (48:36):
That's my point.

Speaker 4 (48:37):
That's my point. I mean, why is that the case?
They shouldn't have it, They shouldn't be bad at it.

Speaker 17 (48:42):
Well, and you know what, see, but it's not even
even local stuff like that. I mean, you know, the
softball tournaments are promoted on Facebook and all that, but
even like Arizona football, they're starting in a couple of
weeks and there's not no billboards around town or signs
or anything.

Speaker 4 (48:59):
I think the thing that Arizona, you know, I think
the thing that Arizona and I'll say this, they've been
spoiled all their lives. The University of Arizona. They build it,
they will come. We are Arizona we don't need to
tell anybody because we're right here.

Speaker 5 (49:11):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (49:11):
They don't do enough of not so much self promotion.
But they're on the Ivory Tower. They don't care. I
mean nothing there.

Speaker 5 (49:19):
I don't.

Speaker 17 (49:21):
For me that I go see. I'd like to see
the promotions or whatever around town, you know, and you don't.

Speaker 7 (49:29):
Hey, whose fault is that? I mean, Vick, you're just speaking.
I talked about this to you guys all the time,
and I will say, I don't if if the expectation
that we're gonna be a five hundred football team every
single year, then to draw people to the to the stadium,
like fix saying, there has to be events, there has
some things going on. There has to be a want
for me to be there. Sure, and then once I'm
getting there, then I'm gonna It's it's second nature. I'm

(49:51):
gonna plan my I'm gonna plan my fall, my winner
around everything there.

Speaker 5 (49:56):
And I agree with that.

Speaker 17 (49:58):
And you know, you see the other day you guys
were talking about stuff that deterren Another thing is is
parking for basketball and football over there. It's horrible, even
even at if in uc LA you can park and
walk one hundred yards and you're there. And at Arizona football,
I'm an old geezer man and for you know, I

(50:19):
have to park a mile away and hook it, and
it's it's not easy. And that's why a lot of
people don't go with me. I'm not gonna go walk
that far for that when they can stay home and
watch it on TV. Yeah, but like at Qino, parking
is awesome. You get there, get out of the car.
At Korbet, get there, get out of the car, and

(50:40):
but to park it at Arizona softball.

Speaker 3 (50:42):
Game, it's like pulling keys.

Speaker 5 (50:44):
Yeah, there's just there is none.

Speaker 3 (50:48):
So many problems and solutions.

Speaker 17 (50:51):
Yeah that's kind of true. But when does the merch
come out, Blake I want.

Speaker 7 (50:55):
To have I don't know, I just uh, they just
so I moved them into my office there. I'm not
my office, but the office next to mine, so they're
officially in there. I get to see him on a
regular basis, so I'll ask them when that's going on
the ownership and everybody. So they moved the twos on
their here. I mean they were to.

Speaker 3 (51:11):
Be speaking better Spanish, is what you're telling me?

Speaker 4 (51:13):
Do I yeah, me and Vic Vic and I will
be able to take you down and take you against
and it'll be fine.

Speaker 3 (51:22):
We're good.

Speaker 17 (51:24):
Yeah, you got to go to Little Mexico, be blake.
You'd be a star there.

Speaker 7 (51:29):
He'll be the lone down there. I don't know if
you guys realize where I grew up. Really like, do
you understand?

Speaker 3 (51:38):
All right?

Speaker 5 (51:38):
Big?

Speaker 4 (51:38):
Good to hear from you. It was just big, But
did you dream big? You didn't tell me what? Yeah,
you did, ask it. I did, but he didn't say, yeah,
that's right. But you know what I'm saying with you guys,
and you you at some point you said, okay, well
I got to stop. But I got to figure this out.
You've mated pretty well. I have to admit you speak well.
You know what you're talking about. Whether it's a bunch
of being you say that to thank you, I appreciate.

(52:01):
Did you not just tell him? I know it's like,
did you have to tell him you're doing a great job?

Speaker 3 (52:06):
Click click ye, thanks.

Speaker 5 (52:08):
A great job.

Speaker 3 (52:09):
I appreciate. He likes tough love doing a horrible job
no better?

Speaker 5 (52:16):
And another fel
