Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services Ensure
your most Prized possessions.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Hello, everybody, welcome to Probably on the Ball hero Fox
Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Riverta, and today with me
is Troy Hutch to send him from Sports Illustrated Arizon
Arizona Wildcats on SI. That one, that one? How do
I find you?
Speaker 3 (00:29):
You can search it up on Google at Arizona Wildcats
on SI, go to our Twitter page at Arizona Wildcats
on SI, or follow me at t Hutch nineteen ninety five.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Cool. And then we got a guy who won from
Azy Desert Sworm Eazy Desert Swarm dot com. Dot com
just updated the site too, a little stiff.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
Looks a little bit better. It looks a little a
little bit more like it's a flow. Oh okay, there's
a feed on there. They call it the feed where
you can just even if we don't have it right away,
If you have it, feel free to post on there, uh,
such as like if you hear something about like maybe
a future non conference matchup. Yeah, and we haven't officially
reported it yet. You can go ahead and the rumors
(01:11):
out there.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Joe blow. So that's what we're that's what journalism gone to. Huh.
I heard that someone cross the street comment section, comment section, Yeah, okay,
kind of like your boards. We don't have boards, thinks, No, no,
but boards. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
I saw this guy at the market and I don't
know what he was doing. Shut up, Kevin. Somewhere journalism
has gotten the crab h market, the pottos there. See
what's gonna who's the next coach? Welcome to the river
eating hot Yeah? What is it? Almonds?
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Almonds? Yeah, blueberry? Yeah yeah, fire burning almonds. Oh my god,
that hurt a little, you mean much? Okay, let's go
to sports. Welcome everybody. Well, we had a chance to
talk to who today, Tim Kish. We're gonna be no
team for fifteen, Yeah, but that'll be who we do.
We got co apete from Arizona basketball press conference and
(02:05):
Braden Burry's five star recruits, high level players, top fifteen
players in the country.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
I didn't ask many questions. You asked a few. My
days are numbered in terms of care. Is that what
you ask? My day's numbered day? I said, you know,
do they have any pressure on being good for this
program to move forward, right, because they're going to be
two dudes that are going to be dependent on Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
I mean if they're not good, Arizona won't be good, right, right,
it's the bottom line, right, They're going to have to
grow and grow quickly. Is there going to be struggles
during the noncomers. Yeah, even even if you had upperclassmen
with that schedule, sure, there's going to be struggles.
Speaker 6 (02:42):
Now.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
We heard a comment as we were leaving saying, wow,
what a great team for another Sweet sixteen.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
And that's about it.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
I'm not going to say who if it's full potential, No,
it's it's better than Sweet sixteen. This roster has the
potential to be better than last year's roster.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Yeah, but so does the rest of the country. And
they're not remembered, they're not ranked very highly in the
upcoming Well, we don't know that yet.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
I mean, well, the projections are not there. I mean,
we'll see what the A people says. I follow that
more than.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, I'm saying eighteen, fifteen, eighteen, I'm going to guess fourteen. Okay,
well that's a Sweet sixty projection.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
But I mean we've seen number one Kansas last year
and they couldn't get to sweet six on his last days.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
He hasn't performed well in the last two three years.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
But you get what I'm saying. I know they can
say it in the top five and they don't finish
sure of course, now.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Of course, no, I know, no, these guys they look fantastic.
When you when we were talking to him, what were
your impressions?
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Holy heck in Coppetes extremely massive. He's in terms of
height and he's bulkier than he was when I last
saw him.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
As kind of like more athletic DeAndre eighton. Yeah, like
a spelt mini version of him, but big, yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
I mean to me, I wasn't expecting him to have
that much muscle because I saw him at Section seven
just a year ago during the summer, and it's like, Okay,
this guy's gonna have to grow into it. He's already
started that way about six eight ish six six eight
sixty nine.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
He to me. When I was with you guys, and
you were you and I were kind of sorted by
the side Burr's I think this guy looks like a
good looking your athlete. You can run up and down
and do a lot of things and then showed up
and then I'm thinking, this dude would be a great
tight end.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Yeah, well, I wanted to ask him, have you ever
played football before? Given that, you know, his family was
a football family. But we kind of got into that
and another kind of viewpoint of that, so I was like,
let's not continue it. But I mean, yeah, he has
that and that Tony Gonzalez frame. Yeah, right, that's who
it kind of reminded.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Yeah, those those big size guys who you know are
good athletes and blah blah blah. So yeah, these are
two dudes that are gonna be part of the wheel,
the focus and the wheel. We'll see what happened. They
had to try to have a little fun with brad
Bradley and who's the other kid asking questions.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
I didn't really get to see him. It was in
the corner of my eyes. Yeah, Bradley was asking Bradley mostly.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Asking questions of the guys having fun with them. So's
I'm looking forward to it. We're gonna see more of
them obviously later you've already talked We've already you guys
have already talked to about six or seven of the guys,
right yeah, mostly returners. Yeah, mostly returners. Right, so we'll
see what happens here in the future. Football. You've been going,
you've been.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Roasting every practice, my butt off. Got a lawn chair,
got one from college. See that's yeah, you're veteran now.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Yeah, it has a little side table. Went to the well.
You might even beat the have you gone to yeah? Yeah? Two? One?
I think three? Okay, so have you gotten your chair yet? No,
you need to get the chair. You need to get chair. Well,
that's good for me. I'm always sitting. Okay, Okay. The
flies were coming with the rains pretty soon.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Maybe maybe not. I mean that's so far. I mean,
unlike years past, flies don't want to be outside.
Speaker 7 (06:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
Yeah, well we get to be on the other side
and the inn door too. Now we can go wherever
we want. Nice policy with that, just because just you know,
it's not the same person in charge of running the
dead to day media events, and they're a little bit
more open and yeah, flexible.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
There's no us against them. No, they shouldn't be tuson Arizona.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
This is not new Well, I'll say this, Arizona has
done a terrific job this season.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Relations Yeah, I'm still trying to get a hold of Brendan,
so you can do as I say that. Let me
put a little dent to that. So a little bit
focused right now. Yeah, well that's the whole thing I've
been asking for three months.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
And we'll see what happens. My dead end's giving up
pretty quickly. Well, you said you're past your prime. Though
you said you're done.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
I'm calling I'm calling it a day in certain things,
just not that, uh the show and stuff I do. Uh,
So we'll see what happens with that. So no, it
should be fun. Basketball is coming up with all the stuff.
I'm not sure where Tommy is. You might be on
the road.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
I saw him on campus just a couple of days ago,
so I don't know if he is on the road
or not. You never know this time of year. You
could be home one day and go on the next.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Right. So that and then football, how today was off?
Today is off? Nice off day.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Last night was a little slow during the night practice
mostly thirdeen fourteen, getting most of the reps. Oh really,
you know, just individual drills and then near then the
last fifteen minutes it was first thing.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
What are you allowed to to? You're not allowed to
shoot anything.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Periods we are you know, let's say three periods out
of the practice first middle three in terms of vidual drills.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
Yeah, and there's no restrictions on that.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
But I mean it's pretty much just you know, sdee
liman going against theee lineman corners, Yeah, doing their thing,
that kind of stuff. So what do you get from it?
Just opportunity to get quick you know, photos and clips
for Twitter and social.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Impressions so good. It's anybody who comes up with stuff
now is foolish.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Well, I think there's some things you can tell, like
in terms of athletic ability on a corner, if they
have good footwork, if they have good work.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
And stuff, do you know what you're looking for?
Speaker 3 (08:17):
I have an idea, and in terms of explosion explosion
off the snap and stuff like that. But in turn,
until you get to a game and you get it,
oh yeah, you don't know what that players.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
But you know, I don't know how to to make
If I even got a cookbook, I doubt if my
my cookbook instructions would help me. So not a good cook.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
So that's my point is, don't have you make us
a meal?
Speaker 2 (08:40):
No, No, my meal is the what we used to
call the Yellow Book Pages or yellow Pages Domino's Today
Bell Yeah right, you get yeah, okay, cool. We had
a good show yesterday, so good luck with us today.
To repeat that everyday. Good luck Back to back days
(09:03):
are very strange for us. But we're gonna have actually
Co's interview and Brandon bury Ury's interviews too, So we'll
go this way, right, We'll do Burris first at three fifteen,
three seventeen, go for about ten twelve minutes our usual
segment time, and then come back and talk about stuff,
right and maybe take some calls, and then at the
breaking news hour for seven or eight minutes just about nut. Okay, cool,
(09:27):
So that will cover the breaking news segment, and then
we'll talk about that briefly and then go to break
and then, like you said, we're gonna have mister Tim
Kish form where you have a football coach, assistant coach
and head coach for a moment here he's part of
the National Football Foundation here in southern Arizona. Talking to
him about that and all the success is going on
what he's up to there, and maybe just get his
(09:47):
impressions just how difficult it is to coach at this level.
Because he did it right. He did it was that
Oklahoma not too long ago, because of all the pressure.
That pressure is whatever word you want to use for Brandan. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
Well, and and he's been around practices, even dating back
with Jetfish. I've seen him at not every practice, but
I've seen him out there. I can't think of one
this year, but last year he was there Jet He
was there a couple of times just handing out and
checking them out. So very respective, highly respected in the
coaching circle, and he sees what's going on out there
(10:22):
on the field.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
So he was the guy. He was gonna tell me, well,
their feat you know in the position, that's the guy.
Not so much you're you're behind him. How much behind?
I want to be nice in the show. Okay, let's go,
let's go come back, and then we'll start that, start
that interview.

Speaker 2 (15:07):
Hey welcome back to the ball. You're on Fox Sports
Fortune fifty. I'm Steve Rivera and today is Troy Hutchinson
with There's to tell me? There isn't a Wildcats on SI. Yes,
like I do with my boy Blake, and we have
one with Azy does it swarm? And now we're gonna
do the interview maybe ten twelve minutes of Braden Berry's
(15:27):
Brydon Burry's yeap freshman at you Braydon Burgs freshman from California.
Feel free to fire away with questions. Why Arizona.
Speaker 13 (15:42):
I just feel like it was the best opportunity for me,
and it was close enough to home, and just they
got a great coaching staff and I feel like Coach Lloyd.
The trust with Coach Lloyd I had. I feel like
he's just less his players. He trusts his players a
lot unless them play.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
How would you describe the experience so long?
Speaker 13 (16:02):
I'll say it's a little They're like kind of the
same to home, but way more hot, like really hot
out here.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
But it's it's been great so far. It's been fun.
Speaker 14 (16:13):
When you were getting recruited like this stuff, where did
they say their their expectations are hopes for you for.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
This first year.
Speaker 13 (16:20):
Uh, I really I'll say what he said was, I
can't really remember off the top of my head, but
just to he's gonna, he said to me, is that
he gonna push me to be the best version of
myself each and every day. He's gonna help me be great.
And my goal is to get to the NBA. He said,
He's gonna help me get there.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
So you come here with high ratings, how you and
all that kind of stuff? How do you live with
that aside?
Speaker 5 (16:44):
Now we just try to be a player.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
Yeah, I feel like, honestly, that's just in the past.
Speaker 13 (16:50):
It's just that's in high school and now I feel
like like everything restarts now that you're in college, So
everything you did in high school doesn't really matter no more.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
There's a lot of new pieces for this team with
you and CoA, And how do you go about meshing
and building plemmer.
Speaker 13 (17:09):
I feel like we're all just all freshmen coming in
to a new spot, so we're all like pretty new
to everything, and they're like great people on the court
and off the court, so it's kind of easy to
just like build bonds with them and just get to
know them more.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
So It's like it's great one.
Speaker 13 (17:25):
In the back, great off the court activities are.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
You The teammates seemed to be connected on who's probably
the best player.
Speaker 13 (17:34):
I say the best player and un know is probably Uh,
probably have to go with Dwayne Uh Evan. Evan's pretty
good myself. Jaden Uh, he's there. He has times where
he's pretty he's he's top five, he's top five.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
Rated so highly. He serves pressure and you guys to
look just to make it better.
Speaker 13 (18:01):
And now I want to say, no pressure, honestly, because
Flight we're all great players and we're all gonna push
each other to be great. And then we also have
great players already on the team with like Jadeen, Mo
Tobain and Deli and everybody. So Flights just we're we
only can get better, like by pushing each other.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
So it's gonna be great.
Speaker 14 (18:19):
Some of them, Tommy and Bore overseas here here working
out for the veterans on the team. What was that experience,
like getting to work with the guards and just getting.
Speaker 13 (18:27):
In rhythm, just being a sponge honestly, just open to
learning new things, learning like the difference between like the physicality,
you know what to look for on ball screens. And
you know, Jaden's he's a senior now, so he's been
here for four years, well three years, but it's gonna
be his fourth year. So just he he's been there.
So I'm just learning after him and Evan. Great guys, what's.
Speaker 14 (18:48):
One thing already that you take away from Jaden during
this time?
Speaker 2 (18:52):
Just like different pace?
Speaker 15 (18:54):
You know.
Speaker 13 (18:55):
Uh, I'll say, like pickups real important to like pick
the ball up with two hand, playing off two feet,
you know, staying under uh, like don't get pressured.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
So is great. Well, we talked with everyone last week.
Speaker 15 (19:09):
He said he had a big but welcome to Arizona
welcoming big twelve moments.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
So JD just like blew through him on a drive.
Have you had one of those moments rarely? Yeah?
Speaker 13 (19:19):
Yeah, So actually it wasn't with them. It was actually
with Tovey. So we're, uh, we're doing like this rebound
and drill and I came off the opposite block and
he's on the wing.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
He was coming in.
Speaker 13 (19:28):
I had to box him out and he just like
flight bulldoz for me all the way to.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
The other side. That was like probably a welcome moment
for me, not the kind of physicality that you saw
a high school. Definitely not, definitely not.
Speaker 14 (19:39):
One of the adjustments freshmen poked about it was the
weight room in the training room. What's that been like
working with fist rounds and how much of an adjustment
was up for me?
Speaker 2 (19:48):
For you, I'll say it's gonna be a big adjustment.
Speaker 13 (19:51):
It's gonna be a big part of my game because honestly,
when I was in high school and lift at all,
I didn't really lift.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
I just did like push ups and pull ups.
Speaker 13 (19:59):
But now being able to get a facility and like
have somebody help me and guide me these pasts, Like
over summer, the four workouts we're doing for strength.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Is like one can get me better.
Speaker 13 (20:10):
What do you think your biggest name for about those Well,
I'll say just honestly everything like I need to be
able to shoot better, dribble better, rebound, defend.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
Just I'll say mostly just continue to be a leader.
Speaker 13 (20:24):
You know, usually a freshmen don't like talk, Like just
got to be like talk a lot on defense and
know everybody's position so if they need help, I can
help them out.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
How would you describe your your game.
Speaker 13 (20:36):
I'll say a lead guard, somebody who can shoot, defend, rebound.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
Like just a winner, honestly.
Speaker 15 (20:45):
So last year there was a lot of talk about
how much harder Brian played as a freshman, whether.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
It was enough and all that, and he ends up
going as.
Speaker 15 (20:52):
A lottery pick and people wonder why he didn't play
as much in common, Have there been any discussions like that,
not a minute you play isn't really periods what we
do in everyone.
Speaker 13 (21:02):
Yeah, honestly, Yeah, I mean I'm not gonna I have
no say in like how many minutes I get, whether
I get thirty some minutes or if I get five minutes.
It's like just making the best of your time, honestly,
and just being the best version of yourself, whether that's
being on the court and playing great or being on
the bench and cheering for your teammates.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
You know, just just up to the coach, honestly. The
goal for this upcoming Sea the goals.
Speaker 13 (21:27):
To win the championship. Honestly. I want to win the
March Madness. I want to win Big twelve. I want
to I want to see players on my team get drafted.
And that's like my main goals for this year.
Speaker 16 (21:41):
Similar to Cola, you come from family elarted athletes.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
What can you tell us about.
Speaker 17 (21:47):
How about them?
Speaker 13 (21:49):
Say, my dad and mom, they helped me a lot.
You know, my dad played basketball. He's in the Hall
of Fame, and he like just helps him with like
the fundamentals, and then at a young age he like
installed like the winning mentality of like not like don't
get comfortable with losing and that like play. That's helped
me get to the point where I'm at today.
Speaker 2 (22:09):
And your mom is a college acpete as well.
Speaker 13 (22:11):
Yeah, she went to she went to Tennessee for softball
and then they met at Cayle State.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
Symmardino in basketball. You have a brother with prolific scorer.
Speaker 13 (22:20):
Oh yeah, yeah, Bjuh. He's the all time leading scoring
record for Arizona, which is pretty good, pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
And part of the staff.
Speaker 13 (22:31):
Yeah, he's like a he's like a grad assistant, grad assistant.
Speaker 14 (22:35):
Able to spend more time together now than yeah, have
you ever have?
Speaker 2 (22:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 13 (22:40):
So he Uh, he lived out here and then I
lived in California. So now that we both go here,
it's like we get to see each other a lot more. Oh,
that's honestly great. Continuing to get to know each other,
you know, push each other. Uh, he days I don't
feel like, like, say I don't want to do something.
He's there to like push me and make sure I
can get it. And it's great to have somebody like
(23:01):
that in your corner. Uh he went to think Mesa
Community College and then yeah, he's here.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
Now. When you look at this team, what do you
think the strains are in the Pema wall.
Speaker 13 (23:14):
I feel like we got one of the best backcourts
in the nation, and I feel like we got probably
the best rebounder in the nation with Tobey, and I
just feel like we're all like focused on winning, Like
we all got that winning mentality.
Speaker 2 (23:29):
When we play.
Speaker 13 (23:30):
You see uh like say we play, we will scrimmage
or something, and the team that's down, you see how
frustrated they are with losing, like not being like not winning.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
So played outs our strength.
Speaker 14 (23:43):
When you would watch Arizona on TV or a person,
what did you what stood out to you about the
style of play.
Speaker 13 (23:50):
That comes, I'll say, just how fast they play, you know,
get it out, get the rebound and run. That's like
that's like the main part and I flay that's where
we're going to be most successful. And like another thing
with the play style is their home games, the crowd Like,
I feel like that the adrenaline is only going to
(24:11):
help us.
Speaker 2 (24:12):
Which game did you come for? Uh?
Speaker 13 (24:16):
I came for official on Red and Blue, but I
came to the Duke game. The atmosphere was crazy.
Speaker 15 (24:23):
So what was the finest guy on your team?
Speaker 2 (24:26):
Funniest, funniest, funniest, funniest fighter wing? Uh?
Speaker 13 (24:34):
He just he gives you that look and you just
want to laugh, or like we just like talk and
we'll just make random jokes, and I feel like that's
he's He's definitely the funniest for sure.
Speaker 14 (24:46):
The other freshmen who are here now, can you kind
of break through their their games or what did you see?
Speaker 5 (24:52):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (24:52):
I feel like sorry for Bryce?
Speaker 3 (24:54):
Uh?
Speaker 13 (24:55):
Bryce, we played au together and he he's been doing great, honestly.
You know, he's shooting the ball like crazy good. He's rebounding,
he's being like we'll all, he's talking a lot. Defending CoA.
He's being dominant, you know, getting downhill, rebounding, getting to
the cup.
Speaker 2 (25:13):
You know, Dwayne, he's being great, being.
Speaker 13 (25:17):
Active, getting a lot of stills, deflections, shooting the ball,
the high clip. So I mean they're they're all doing great. Honestly,
And I can see like from when we when I
first got here to now, like how like better everybody's
getting Oh yeah, Yvonne, Yvonne, He's He's one of the
ones for sure. He he's a he's a smart guy.
(25:41):
He plays off two feet, he can shoot it. He
can he knows when to pass out of the post
and stuff, and he just he's a great guy.
Speaker 2 (25:50):
Bill. He's getting stronger.
Speaker 13 (25:52):
Uh, he's rebounding great, defending great, he can shoot the ball.
Speaker 2 (25:58):
He can pretty much do it all on this. You
mentioned your cool games win, the Big twelve.
Speaker 15 (26:04):
Win, the national teamster, but a lot of freshmen are
going to be involved in this process.
Speaker 14 (26:09):
Do you feel like you can do that playing that
many young guys?
Speaker 16 (26:15):
Wait?
Speaker 2 (26:15):
What was the question?
Speaker 16 (26:16):
Can you wait a Big twelve championship or national championship.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
With so many freshmen? I believe so yeah. I think
I think we can do it doing.
Speaker 13 (26:27):
I feel like just in practiceing how hard like we
compete against one another, and I just like the improvements
that we have with one another. And I trust that
Coach Lloyd is gonna put us in positions to be successful,
and I feel like we're gonna go out there and
be great.
Speaker 14 (26:42):
I mean, we look at the non COMPENSLADD games. Is
there anybody you're excited to play with a loaded non
comperence schedule?
Speaker 2 (26:49):
Yeah? I feel like, honestly, I'm scited to play everybody.
Speaker 13 (26:52):
I feel like the first games against Floridas would be great,
and then we got we got I think probably one
of the hardest or of his schedules out there. So
it's like it's gonna be great for us, Its gonna
be a test for and he only can get us better.
Speaker 14 (27:06):
How do you think the Big Pole Conference prepares Crushman
for not only the season, but for them in terms
of the physicality.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
Yeah, so I heard.
Speaker 13 (27:14):
I heard that it's real. It's more physical. You don't
get as much calls. So I feel like, honestly, he's
got to play through the contact. You got to get
ready to get hit and get up. Thanks Brad much,
appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
Well, do you have it real quick with Brydon? A
very smart guy. Yeah, A good looking kid who can
probably play nice point guard or guard he said, right,
tall guard.
Speaker 3 (27:41):
I mean he can handle the basketball, but with Jane
and Bradley being the lead point I don't think he's
going to be the primary ball.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
Right can you shoot? Oh yeah, yeah, he can shoot? Okay,
And there you have it. You know, it could be
a number two three guys. To me, he is a
perfect two guard guard and transfer three. Who at the three?
Speaker 3 (28:02):
I would say Duane the freshman if I had to
pick one right now. But I could see Tommy going
with a smaller lineup and starting at the two and
Braden Burry's at the three.
Speaker 2 (28:11):
I like that. I like that, but for how long?
Speaker 3 (28:13):
Because once you get into the big dwell play, you
can't play Anthony in those type of games.
Speaker 13 (28:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
Well, we saw that he looked bigger. We'll see more confidence.
We'll see about this team is going to be better
than last year. Last year they were the only they
came on strong at the end because of one guy.
But we'll see. It's funny because they talked about at
least Coen did talking about his experience, his first experience,
and it was going against Oak. Yeah. You know, anybody
(28:39):
going against the walk is going to be bullied because
it's gonna be an eye opener. Yeah, oh god, I
don't want to get bruised. To get bruised. Are we
ready to go?
Speaker 4 (28:47):
We got about ten minutes. Bring up Tobey. I'm excited.
Excited is a word. Maybe, I'm interested to see his growth. Yeah,
because he was pretty good. Yeah, for not having so
much experience and then transitioning into the big twelve.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
Sure he stood his ground. Now he's going into his
second year under Tommy Lloyd. If he could eat some shots.
Speaker 4 (29:12):
Who has the experience, the coaching talent with big men,
Saw with Loco, Saw with Umar.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
You know, with the he's gonna hit. If he could
hitch some shots. I know he's been working on that
three ball, which makes no sense to me. You don't
want that for the NBA, he's going to need that
at times. But for college, if you could just work
fifteen feet in in yeah, and that that's the perfect.
Speaker 2 (29:38):
Right and that that art of the game is gone. Yeah,
fifteen twelve foot jumper. So we'll see what happens with them.
I do like the team. I think they'll make up
and he does a good job with that right, putting
it together. Luke did that very well with pieces that fit.
I think Tommy does that as well well.
Speaker 3 (29:53):
I think last year was the first time Tommy Dennan
do a great job of that. In terms of initially
that four and five start, and you saw how the
pieces were a little right, one key, But then they jelled,
and I think that speaks volumes to Tom and his ability.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Well, they jailed because they jailed in at the sacrifice
of the team because of my name's with the freshman
who didn't play Bryan, Yeah, Carter Bran who didn't play much.
And then what you know, it was good enough to
play in the NBA. But he that was more on
am too. He had didn't have confidence in his first
month or so. No, and you know what, I think
he was still finding his rhythm. I think the plan
(30:29):
was for him to potentially be a second year player,
at least from the coaching staffs perspective. I think one
and done was always the plan for Carter and his
family just going into college. But I do think, you know,
they thought he was probably going to come back. And
then once you see where you are in the draft
boards and how this draft was a little week, it's like, okay,
you gotta go. Did you have something to say? Uh?
(30:51):
The funny thing about us and I know what they have,
They're going to be good. I wish Henry would have stayed.
I don't say that too often about guys who leave,
but he he and then Creavius is obviously going to
be a unofficial, but he's not Henry.
Speaker 3 (31:02):
No, that would have been a massive element to have,
and it's something that they wanted. They were very upset,
not at Henry, not at Henry, just how that went down,
because you're in an era where players are being shopped
around in the middle of the season, not by themselves
but by their agents and stuff. And so once the
(31:22):
season ended, they thought, Okay, he's coming back, and all
of a sudden, you know, X amount of money into
North Carolina.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
Here you go.
Speaker 3 (31:27):
It's like, wait a minute, when did that come about?
Speaker 2 (31:31):
So it's a blind side, no, not even close. So
we'll see what happens, and we don't even know how
durable he's going to be.
Speaker 3 (31:39):
My question with Henry, if you had Henry, and I
think you want Henry on your roster, how would you
have worked that, because he's probably playing the four or
the five, But then co is a peer four, he's
not a three. You want him on the court, but
then you want to walk on the court. It's like
one too mini bigs in that situation without even mentioning
(32:02):
CBS without it, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (32:03):
Yeah, yeah, I guess what it's a problem I want
to have. Yeah, probably what I want to have. And
and Crevas would probably been in this dude.
Speaker 7 (32:10):
That out.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
Yeah yeah, who who knows, I don't know, but we'll
see what happens. I thought Henry was going to be fantastic.
Speaker 3 (32:20):
I thought, and I'm sure it will be fine in
North Carolina.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
Yeah, I think he'll have a good year. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
If he had one more year with Tommy and went
through the season, he could have been a first round potentially,
I don't know. I don't want to say lottery, but
definitely first round draft pick.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
Yeah. And I think he may be that with North here. Yeah.
I still think that that's possible because he's he is
is what he is right. Oddly, No, I don't know
if anybody did this story. It was contrigued to me
because I thought when I first saw him three years
ago whatever years ago, before the injury, I thought, this
guy's gonna be really good because of what he does.
And then I found out I guess we all found
out that he was a shorter guy. Obviously we're all shorter,
(32:53):
but he handled the ball. He's more of a guard
than he was a tall guy and that's how he
learned how to handle the ball and see the four
and blah blah blah. Then all of a sudden he
became this tall guy who could do what he does. Yeah,
I mean, anybody, if you're small or tall or whatever.
His first suggestion is handle the ball all the time,
all the time, because you're going to need that skill.
And then you become this tall guy and you know
(33:13):
you don't have to do that already, and it's something
you don't see exactly exactly. And that's what he was.
He was very impressive. He kind of reminded me of
a more modern version.
Speaker 3 (33:25):
I think this guy would have played a little bit
to his style today of like a pal Gasol, a
guy that can rotate the basketball, great passer that isn't
afraid to beat you off the dribble, can face up
as well as back down. But the difference is and
Palace a decent defender. There's an extra motor defensively that
you saw out of Henry last year. Yeah, that they
(33:47):
they're going to be searching for. Walker is a good defender,
but he's not a shot blocker.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
No, he's not a shot blocker and he can't extend.
Speaker 3 (33:52):
The floor and Henry can guard you at the three
point line. He didn't end and he did Yeah, yeah
to me.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
And then we're talking about a guy who's not even here,
but he maybe one of the better big men here
in the last twenty years. And in terms of ability potential. Yeah,
because who give me one of Tarzuski nore that's what
you play. Yeah to motor, that's the thing. So you're
going to get that guy every now and again. Yeah, okay,
(34:21):
are we ready to go? Yeah, let's do that and
come back and talk more. Maybe get a call or

we'll see what happens. Not that I don't miss Brennan
(38:54):
because I haven't been out there. But rich Rod and
his rants, he had one yesterday, a couple of days ago,
a couple days about football and let's put it, let's
play it. Did they get an extra workouts?
Speaker 7 (39:06):
Yeah?

I mean, like you said, two got your.

I just curious what you meant by you only had
two running backs make it through the workout.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
Yeah, I'll tap it out.
Speaker 6 (39:17):
Well, no, they get breaks through them, right, I'm my time,
like we had no trainers, no medical trainers.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
We probably had zero.
Speaker 6 (39:26):
Injuries because they had nobody go to We got thirty
of them, so they're like.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
Oh, where's the trainer at I got a.
Speaker 6 (39:34):
Great training staff, But no, I just say that.
Speaker 2 (39:36):
I just like what running backs.
Speaker 6 (39:40):
Finished the entire practice without tap it out somewhere or two.
Speaker 2 (39:48):
Two. Now I can play a game without running backs.
I can run the quarterback or clib receive, but I
want to. I've always had really good running backs. I
got good running backs here.
Speaker 6 (39:57):
I got a good group, but finished for two. So
I do you think I'm not gonna talk to my
recruiting staff this afternoon.
Speaker 2 (40:09):
Were running a business. But helps to have some running backs.
He's the best. He's the best around. He used to
do some great ones here. You know, just kind of like,
you know, getting that mood and just pop off.
Speaker 3 (40:24):
Let's let's see he got hurt, he got sacked, he
fell down and he got hurt. Michael Levy the end
of the A s U. It was on a game
when Khalilte got banned up. Yeah yeah right, but great
stuff for him. He just kind of gets in the
mood and whack. I remember after the BYU game and
lost it lost in the in the game. Uh, we
have the ten minute period, right. It wasn't enough for him.
(40:47):
It wasn't enough for him. He said, I don't understand
these rules. I don't understand these rules. We have to
get over this loss and stuff like that. He hated
to lose. He hated to lose. He was like, I
don't want to say he was a poor sport, but
he was. He was that guy did real, not.
Speaker 2 (41:00):
Just he hated to lose more than he loved to win. Oh,
without question. We talked about that with Burke Cray or whoever.
We talked about Yeah, yeah, no question that he hated.
When he was a kid, he used to drive home
from his parents and have the towel over his head.
He didn't want to talk about it. Let's go. We
got a call. Although you're on the air and one
of the ball who's this.
Speaker 17 (41:17):
Hey Steve, it's Gary.
Speaker 2 (41:19):
Haven't talked to you guys in a while.
Speaker 15 (41:20):
Hey Gary, how are you not too bad?
Speaker 7 (41:23):
Man?
Speaker 17 (41:23):
I hate to give my send Double Brethren any credit.
Speaker 15 (41:25):
But I love this camp set in Camp t they
call it. They got these kids going too. I'm just
trying to get you guys, refresh my memory. Who started
for us? Camp CoA cheese? And why did that? Sucker?
Speaker 2 (41:35):
And good question, you know, all of a sudden good question.
Speaker 15 (41:38):
I know I thought it was financial why they ended it.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
But yeah, I'd have to do a quick test here.
I covered the Beast the football team back in eighty eight,
eighty nine to ninety, and then we went down there
for those times. And I know they did it before me.
Early Jay would know this, I might text that. But
it was nice, it was cool. The thing about it
was it was muggy and whatever. The camp that I
(42:00):
agree with you. Those camps are fun team bonding, uh
for us? Do you know the for us? I'm talking
about the media now. We stayed at the Motel six.
That was the media hotel because in Douglas there's not much.
There's not much. And right next to the Motel six
was a prison, so we you know, they were you know,
lower lower level offenders, but you know d U I
s and stuff like that. So yeah, like you know,
(42:21):
they'd see we'd see them, they'd see us. Uh, And
it was it was all right. It was just muggy
and a lot of flies and a lot of stuff.
And one bar. We'd go play pool, drink a beer
two and then you know, go do the next day.
Uh So, I don't know, let me try to find
that before the show's over here in this this hour.
I think it ended in the because I thought you
were being well.
Speaker 17 (42:40):
They also did some military It was kind of like that,
working with.
Speaker 15 (42:43):
The military kids, like their training, doing logs and building
stuff and you know, kind of the team thing.
Speaker 3 (42:48):
You're spot on, because they did do that with jetfish
brought in, uh, Navy seals. I know that, and they
did Navy seal training with jet.
Speaker 2 (42:55):
Yeah, but I think that stoops or when you're that's
what you're talking about, right, They went back and did
for what Chuca stuff. They went down there instead of
in lieu of Camp Couchies. They went down there anyway
and did exactly what you're saying. Right.
Speaker 15 (43:09):
I'm sure with Tomy they did it. That's got to
me written all over. I just don't know if it
started with Smith. You know, I'd have to check it.
And maybe we'll get a call here from people who know.
I'm going to text somebody right now. I know, okay,
you know some of you old school guys, you know,
I just figured I wanted to throw that out there, guys,
because I got fond memories.
Speaker 2 (43:23):
Of that too. You know, pretties kids, right right, and
those were kind of like the good old days. I'm
sure they were for you.
Speaker 15 (43:29):
But even at camp orders an Asu goes to a
camp ton is, oh, I mean it's got to be
what eighty five?
Speaker 17 (43:34):
I mean, you had the weather here, you subject.
Speaker 15 (43:36):
It's no you know, you're not talking seventy degrees up there.
I'm sure it's a little bombed area.
Speaker 2 (43:40):
Even Yeah. No, I don't even know if every I
just don't know, had a chance to go somewhere. Where
do they go, like not to the mountains? I mean
they'd have to go like Silver City.
Speaker 3 (43:48):
Well, I tell you what they this coaching staff, they
don't want to get out of the heat. I know
in terms of the humidity. But you have Dannigans all saying, man,
I wish we were playing at three o'clock in the
middle of the heat, just in the middle of you know,
pure heat. Uh So they this coaching staff enjoys the heat.
They like the the you know, the what do you
call it, the adversity the players have to overcome and
(44:09):
working out in the heat and getting used to it,
because that's gonna be one of their biggest advantages playing
in Arizona is that he so they want to get
them used to it, and that's something Miss Staff loves.
Speaker 2 (44:20):
But that makes sense.
Speaker 15 (44:21):
I'll go to TV guys when I'm playing at seven
thirty or later every night. But still, you know you're
gonna have some warm, warm balled evenings.
Speaker 2 (44:27):
So hold on, hold on real quick. I just got
a call from Lamont Huntley. I don't know if he
left me a message in terms of when. Maybe he's listening.
Uh no, he didn't leave me a message on one.
Speaker 17 (44:37):
That's all right, guys, I'll listen to it.
Speaker 2 (44:39):
I like your show. I just wanted to throw a
little topic out there, and I thank you well. You
stumped me and stumped dusk because we just don't know,
but I'll find out. I'll thank you, appreciate it. I
appreciate it. That was Garry, I believe. So okay, Gary, Yeah,
thanks for calling Gary. It's been a while. Uh okay. Wait,
La Month says we went there in eighty two for
the first time under Smith, so he's listening. Thank you,
(44:59):
thank you, thank you. In the month, by the way,
the month. I'm gonna have Ricky Huntley is gonna be
my co host tomorrow. Ricky is always great. Yeah, so
we'll talk about a lot of this stuff. Good to
know started starting eighty two, last for probably twenty years
more than that.
Speaker 3 (45:13):
Last said, Mike used to do it as well. Stoops,
you did, and then rich Rod his first couple of years,
and then it stopped. Rich Rod did it richer because
Matt Marino would tell me about going out there and
he was only one and he got to talk to
rich Rod a lot, and the whole.
Speaker 2 (45:28):
Entire coaching staff.
Speaker 3 (45:29):
Oh okay, so yeah, rich Rod was the last of
that and ended that he's one that.
Speaker 2 (45:34):
Yeah, yeah, that kind of makes sense. It's been what now,
more than twelve thirteen years.
Speaker 3 (45:38):
Then, yeah, sound around that twenty twelve thirteen year Yeah.
Speaker 2 (45:43):
Okay, that's when you needed a chair and you watched
a bunch of fl fly swatter chair and uh patient,
I'm sure it was an experience. Yeah, I'm glad they
don't do that. It's a lot it's a lot cooler
out there. And well, now you'd have to expense yourself,
uh you know, make your own expenses and things like that. Yeah,
(46:06):
and you know, just being having to do the articles
out there right back then, you you guys don't even
know this. When I started back in those days, we
had those trash eighties. I don't know if those little
IBM things that look nothing like Yeah, I know, it's
way to beyond you in the little screen that you
typed and you had a hard time seeing. In me
white typos were going through like crazy, and it was
(46:27):
just horrible. But now we have technology that it still
fails on you to fix stuff that got It's made
to fix itself, but it doesn't. Right, that's word looks right. No, no,
it's not steeve.
Speaker 3 (46:43):
Okay, no grammarly back then, no, I don't use that though,
as you could tell for the show.
Speaker 2 (46:50):
Well, what were talking we're talking about Richmond, just the
crazy stuff you guys were talking about. Or he hated
to lose more than he'd love to win, no question, competitor,
he would, he would, and then it take him a
day or so and then he kind of goetna get
to normal. There were times when you played at UCLA
and playing them really tough, right, really tough, but lose,
and he'd be pissed. Blah blah, blah, and I said,
(47:11):
you know, you, your horses aren't as good as their horses.
I mean some point you got to kind of realize.
He said, yeah, I understand that, but I just hate
to lose.
Speaker 3 (47:19):
Well, and I'm thinking of that twenty fourteen season of
the year they went to the Vesta Bowl. Yeah, defensively,
they held their own. They held them to like seventeen points,
but they only scored seven.
Speaker 2 (47:29):
Well, and there was a shake at the end with Anu.
Remember he threw the pick. I think it was in
the corner. Yeah, and he was really really upset. But
for I mean, you think about going into that game.
If you say, hey, Rich, you're going to hold them
to seventeen points, Oh cool, We're gonna beat them by
twenty thirty points. There was seventeen fourteen, I think there
seventeen seven. It didn't even score past ten. I knew,
(47:49):
I knew it was not that good. That I know.
Speaker 3 (47:51):
It wasn't good. I mean, the running game was good,
the offensive line wasn't good. Everything that could have gone wrong.
Speaker 2 (47:56):
It was cool too. You remember being close SNT ten
that day in La no here here in town. Oh,
I think I do remember that. It was very cold,
up there and not it was indoors, indoors, but yeah,
it was cold going to Phoenix. You know that it
was cold in the press box. I remember that. Kay,
anybody else want to call? Thanks Gary for the call.
(48:16):
So you got your answer starting in eighty two, seventeen seven,
seventeen seven, Yeah, well, uh yeah, not a good game.
Speaker 3 (48:23):
And they and they wore those nasty like uh you
UCLA like midnight black uniforms, like something that doesn't go
with their colored scheme.
Speaker 2 (48:35):
I don't remember. I don't remember that. I have pictures,
but I don't remember that. Yeah. Uh and we went
eighteen for forty eight.
Speaker 4 (48:42):
Yeah, one touchdown, one interception.
Speaker 2 (48:45):
Yeah, especially that last one. How many rushing yards? Uh?
Eight for a new or overall for the team overall eighty. Yeah.
It was not a good game and it could have been,
it wasn't.
Speaker 3 (48:58):
And you know that season they the UCLA game, which
is a weird game because offense isn't rolling, and then
the USC game you have the missfield goal and with
justice scouring. So I mean you're talking about ten and two,
maybe twelve, and oh.
Speaker 2 (49:12):
We got to we gotta call hello, you're on the
air Andine on the ball. Who's this?
Speaker 15 (49:17):
Hey, Steve, this is done?
Speaker 2 (49:19):
What's the word? Are you doing? Troy?
Speaker 15 (49:21):
And who's with us on the board today?
Speaker 2 (49:23):
One? One and done? One one and done?
Speaker 17 (49:27):
Hey, how you guys doing today?
Speaker 15 (49:30):
You guys are talking about the basketball, the rotations and stuff.
Speaker 2 (49:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 15 (49:37):
I have a question because well I'm lazy, I don't
want to do the research.
Speaker 2 (49:41):
But was Mo.
Speaker 15 (49:43):
Creebas injured a year before last also?
Speaker 2 (49:47):
Or how long has he been here?
Speaker 3 (49:48):
No, he's been so he played his freshman year, but
during the off season he had an injury playing for
his national team with his foot, and then as he
was getting ready for the last and reaggravated the same injury.
But they didn't disclose exactly what the injury was, but
it kept them out for the year.
Speaker 15 (50:06):
Yeah. Yeah, because I know that it seemed like that
Tommy was really high on Mole and you know, with
good reason or whatever. I don't know, I'm not really
familiar with him. What my my question or my wanderings are,
is Tommy going to be able to pivot away from
(50:27):
Mole if he's unable to.
Speaker 17 (50:29):
Play, Because a man, a guy that big with a.
Speaker 15 (50:33):
Foot injury, that's a huge in my opinion, that's a
huge question mark without seeing him. I haven't seen him.
I don't know what he's doing. I don't know if
he's doing anything. But to me, once the when the
lights are on and the pressure's on and you're having
to play full blast, is Tommy going to be able
to pivot away from him or you know, change the
(50:56):
rotation and stuff.
Speaker 2 (50:57):
I have no doubt. I have no doubt. I think
that you're concerns are accurate and uh justified. But we
had previous maybe two weeks ago at the press company. Yeah,
and he's said he's one hundred percent ready to go.
We'll see, but you're right, you know, a big man
with a foot injury. Who knows how long that lasts
and how sturty that would be. But I think though
that I'm not sold on him yet. No, I'm not either.
(51:19):
So so there's your he'll have no choice but to
try to uh to pivot.
Speaker 3 (51:23):
And not only that, I think he has the ability
with this roster and the versatility, Yeah, to go small
playing you know, co at co at the four and
five and then bringing somebody off the bench and you
can mix and match stuff, and then you have to
remember the players coming in that recruiting cross from Overseas.
One of them is a big guy who they say
might not necessarily be ready to play big time minutes,
(51:46):
but you get them in the rotation as a defensive sub,
they can they can work their way around it well.
Speaker 15 (51:52):
And it's funny because you say he could, he could
choose to go small, but they're not really that small.
Toby's a pretty Toby's a pretty sick guy. He's kind
of Pete Williams ish, Yeah, and and Cole, and Cole
looks like for a young kid, he looks like a
big kid exactly. You know, I don't know how small
(52:14):
that small lineup was going to be. I think it's
still gonna be pretty formidable, it seems.
Speaker 2 (52:19):
Yeah. No, In standing next to Colin, I'm thinking he's
more Pete Williams too. He's very fit, ready, ready to go.
You can see he's get some bounce.
Speaker 3 (52:28):
He's like, uh and I don't think he has the
ability to stretch it as far. But if Ashley had muscle,
that's what kind of frame he has. Brandon Ashley had
muscle to him.
Speaker 2 (52:37):
Maybe as a freshman or a Ronde Rondi's kept that muscle.
Speaker 3 (52:41):
Yeah, but bigger, bigger, he's bigger, and I think more offensively.
Speaker 2 (52:46):
With yeah, you're a more offense, will be just and
do you have a three ball? You don't even use
one oft suar things. We gotta go, Hey, Don, thanks
for calling. We got to take off.
Speaker 15 (52:56):
Yea, all right, thanks guys, have a good day. And
I miss rich Rod too.
Speaker 2 (53:01):
Hey, we gotta go, right, Okay, we gotta go. Come
back with an interview with Cochen. Right, I
