Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera on
Fox Sports fourteenth fifty, powered by Nova Insurance Services Possessions.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Hey, welcome everybody to Eye on the Ball here on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
I'm Steve Rivera. Luca's in town, Lucas here, d I'm back.
Speaker 4 (00:23):
You're back, like choice, I hope, Yes, definitely by choice.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
You're going to a seminar soon, Yes.
Speaker 4 (00:30):
To a symposium. Okay, Lendy, it's that college education.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Good you go, you we got we got that. Your
name now, Kenzie.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
What you learned, Kensey is I can't remember anybody's name Kenzie,
so you want you might be k after all right,
I'll go by anything, and we got one one here
we go here, we got ready on the other side,
so there you go.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
Already messed up with names. Welcome back, thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
And then we got Kay right in the show, Mackenzie
in the show today lead some systems here, cool, welcome back,
thank you. What do you think about the football season?
You're three years removed. Jed's last year, Yes.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
No, Jets first year was my last year. Yes, that
year they went like one in ten. That one went
over cal at home like ten to seven or whatever.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
It's been five years, four years.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
So my last fall football season was twenty twenty one. Wow,
four seasons since I've been on the field.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Time Flas and they sucked back.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
Then, they did suck, So to see them at nine
and three was never something I first saw this season.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Right, or probably two seasons after that one.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
Maybe I figured they had to get to six this year.
Six was a healthy number to get to bull eligible
next year.
Speaker 5 (01:59):
Maybe the year after we got to nine or ten.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
The fact that they got to nine this year, I
think says a lot about how Brennan restructured his coaching,
his coaching staff, how the players have.
Speaker 5 (02:09):
Responded to it.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
And we've seen I think, a different version of Brennan
this year than we did last year.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Yeah, you, from your mind's eye, what did you see?
Speaker 4 (02:18):
I think we saw a more aggressive Brennan on the field.
He seemed much more vocal and involved and a little
less deer in the headlights. He still had some moments
where he seemed I don't know if confused is the
right word, or like he was just kind of dumbfounded
by what was going on on the field. Because there
were definitely moments we had like that, like it happens.
Life happens like that on the field, but we saw
(02:40):
a much more involved coach. He was much more involved
with his coordinators, he was much more involved as players.
I think I saw him run out of the field
more times than I have in the last couple of.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Years and control.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
Yes, he definitely being much more involved in huddles and
being more vocal. And I think the players have bonded
well to it, and I think that's what they were
missing last year.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
Right, No, I totally agree.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
You've been to a couple of press conferences, two or
three right now, Yeah, I've been to So what did
what have you seen.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
In his press conferences in terms of demeanor? I mean
he's happier, that's for sure.
Speaker 5 (03:12):
Well that's what happens when you're winning.
Speaker 6 (03:14):
Yeah, right, No, he just keeps I feel like he's
more to the point now, if that makes sense. You know,
he's just like he doesn't like try to sugarcoat stuff.
He's like, hey, you know, this is what's happening. Yeah,
at least it feels like it.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
No, that's a good, good observation because you're probably right.
You probably meandered a lot to explain himself away.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
I feel like last season the press conferences that I saw,
he just seemed to it was a shrug your shoulders
and I don't know, we'll see.
Speaker 5 (03:39):
I don't know, we'll see.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
I have not had a chance to watch a ton
of his press conferences this year, but he seems very
much more to the point, he seems to actually have
answers for questions.
Speaker 5 (03:47):
And again that could be because they're winning.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
He actually has answers to questions because he knows the
answer because of the outcome of the game. Compared to
last year. They were in a losing season. They didn't
even hit five hundred last year. So it's whether he's
had a year under his belt at a major conference
or his PR team has helped prep him very well
for the media this year.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
I don't think that's the more settled in, more settled in.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
It could be a variety of reasons, but I truly
do believe winning creates answer.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
I do.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
I think that's a good observation as well. Yeah, no
one's prepped him. He is what he is because he
still kind of speaks the way he's it is, you know,
but you know what I mean. But yeah, that's good.
So good to see you. Basketball obviously plays tomorrow, big game.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
Yes, are you going? Probably not?
Speaker 5 (04:33):
No, I'm not.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
You're not gonna pull the I'm gonna love him card?
Speaker 4 (04:36):
No, but I will. I will watch it. It's against Auburn.
It's it's a big game.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Yeah, the biggest one you'll see in town. That's not
a conference game. Yep, so good for you.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Are you going? You're not going? Have you gone to
say any.
Speaker 7 (04:51):
I haven't gone to any basketball games this year. I
went to a lot last year, but I'm not going
to this one.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Okay, No, good okay, And I'm sure you're not going
on you now?
Speaker 3 (05:00):
I'm working.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Yeah, okay, a big, big game, football game. Oh that's right,
you have Yeah, you have another job. Yeah, I forget.
And the high school championships are this weekend as well.
Speaker 8 (05:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (05:10):
Soth Point, yeah, south Point, oh, Mike Mountain for sure.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Yeah. I think south Point might have long No really
in it, No, I think so? Yeah? Okay, yeah, yeah,
oh they are in it. Yeah. Yeah, I saw yours. Yeah, okay,
okay cool?
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Uh And then basketball of course with tomorrow, like we
just said, uh we today, we're gonna talk a lot
about basketball. We're gonna have Bruce Pascal on at three
seventeen talking about you. Was with him yesterday at the
press converence with Tommy mister, mister, I don't want to
be here, but I'll answer your questions and.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
Then just here so I won't get fined.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Yes, yes, and then you remember the guy's name for
the four like Jones, Yeah, Jones, Jones, Jones.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Yeah, with book what's oh, blame it on the booking,
blame it on the buggin.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
So he's coming in tomorrow finding from Auburn to cover
tomorrow night's game. So that'd be cool to see how
good they are. You know, I'm not sure if he's
a positive guy.
Speaker 5 (06:07):
Or we're about to find out.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
Yeah, yeah, you know what.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
I'm saying, you know, because mostly the websites are yeah, yeah, yeah,
look at us.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
Look at us, Look what we did. We're doing so well?
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Yes? Is that you're Mickey mask?
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Oh no, no, no no no. If I do that,
only dogs will be.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
Able to hear me.
Speaker 6 (06:24):
Okay, anything else, guys, you know what you think about
Auburn again, since he's stay, they.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Look good obviously. A couple of players scored like sixty points. Uh,
you know, with with each other. So that's they're pretty
good obviously, right, and we'll see how good. And I
think it's Almos gonna beat him by Tannish at home.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
Did we know what the with the no not?
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Yeah, we checked earlier today the spread.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Yeah, yeah, no, I think it's gonna come out the
day of that's my guys gonna google it right now
and see.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
Okay, I don't think it's up yet.
Speaker 5 (06:56):
I would have thought it would have been closer than ten.
I'm not gonna lie six.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
I said six online?
Speaker 4 (07:01):
Is that that sounds more accurate just based on how
Arizona's been playing. Granted, November was a great month for
women's basketball, men's basketball, and football. To all be undefeated November,
that is a huge feat. So it's a good time
to be a Wildcat.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
It is it is outside of the women losing a
couple of days ago. No, it's not ready to I
think it's tomorrow.
Speaker 9 (07:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
I would say six or seven the most, and then
let's see what happens. No pics today. Jay's out, which
is okay with me.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
It's probably okay with him too, means well, the fans
might have enjoyed Jay and me getting back together and
arguing with one another.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Yes, yes, and what we did the picks back when
you did them?
Speaker 10 (07:39):
Right?
Speaker 4 (07:39):
Yeah, we did?
Speaker 3 (07:40):
And what was what was Jane notorious for taking.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
The long shots and taking kerkkrisa on.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Anything being wrong? Yeah, I'm sure he's listening. I'm not
sure he's listening.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
Usually I beat him in most of the picks because
I went logical and he tried to take a long shot.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
Okay, yeah, four years or nothing's really No, No, you
haven't met Jaya. That's okay. That was enough. That was enough.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
No, he's our Friday guy. I missed him already. He
wasn't here last week either, right, Oh, we didn't have.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
We didn't have to last two weeks. We haven't had
a Friday. Oh you just were in Friday. Yeah last week?
Where was it Friday?
Speaker 10 (08:19):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Last week? It was Thanksgiving week. That's right, you're right.
Speaker 5 (08:24):
Oh, you've been busy.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
I've been busy and I've been getting old. Said, I
can't remember what's your name?
Speaker 5 (08:28):
Uh huh?
Speaker 3 (08:30):
Da Dad is good?
Speaker 5 (08:32):
Calling caller Doug is good?
Speaker 4 (08:34):
You think he's going to tune in for the last
hour of the show because he'll still be working he's.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
Also at tweeting tweeting me and I have no answer
for you because he's mister negative. Doug.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
Well, you're the only one that will listen outside of me,
So he's got to let somebody else now good.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
And then we got mister Wyoming calling in every now
and again. That's her dad.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
Oh okay, I love it.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Yeah, So anybody else want to call him? Five two
o four one six seventy four forty. I can say
hello to g if you'd like, for any one of us.
I know I'm not on that list, or you'd be
calling by that Vick or your boy mister Richard Koreele.
Speaker 5 (09:11):
Well, I thought you're gonna say, Nico, I'm.
Speaker 11 (09:15):
Too.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
Oh yeah, yeah, good call all the time, because man,
how you doing? How you doing?
Speaker 5 (09:22):
We had fun? We had fun for three four years
ago when I was here.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Yeah, that's what this show is all about.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
Anything else. Games last night though, Dallas obviously, yeay, Cowboys lost. No,
my Cowboys, my Cowboys since I was two years old.
Speaker 5 (09:36):
They tried and then they failed.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Yeah, Detroit, be big games this weekend. Big you can
have breaking news. Yeah okay, Yeah, we don't want to
put the pressure on Mackenzie maybe.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
Okay, yeah, I have baking news.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Yeah that's why I figured because this is impromptu for you.
But you'll have all this no problem.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
And then'll been to the big college games this weekend,
championship weekend, ship weekend, so close games there again, Bruce
Pascal in about five minutes. We'll take a break here
in about a minute, and then we're gonna have your
guy Jones.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
Who Jones? Ike Jones? Jones? You don't get that. I'm sorry,
that's a young person thing.
Speaker 5 (10:15):
I don't even get it.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
And I'm you know who Mike Jones is said, you're
gonna go six seven on.
Speaker 10 (10:19):
Me or.
Speaker 12 (10:21):
What?
Speaker 5 (10:22):
I am not that much older than you, and I
don't understand.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Jones is like, what's that? Mike Jones? He was a
rapper in like two thousand and three from Florida two
thousand and three. You came in with earlier or whatever
the hell you said?
Speaker 5 (10:34):
Very philosopher, Yeah, very.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
The story of Icarus is a classic is a classic tale.
You know, you had a lot of time to that
army that I did. I wasted a lot of it too.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
With that.

This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera on
Box Sports fourteen fifty.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
Hey, welcome back to WY on the Ball here a
Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera, your d you're
Kimsie and your Ray. Now on the phone, we have
Bruce Pasco from the Daily Star. How you doing, Bruce? Good?
Speaker 15 (15:53):
How are you see?
Speaker 3 (15:54):
Fine? Thank you?
Speaker 11 (15:55):
Hey?
Speaker 3 (15:55):
Real quick?
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Someone uh this week I think on Facebook or somewhere,
you know, old man Facebook, at least meet for me
was saying, oh, by the way, Auburn's coming into town,
and did you know that they're the best team that's
not a conference game. And I'm a little disappointed because
this is the really only good game that Arizona hasn't
a schedule. And I'm thinking we've been talking about that
(16:16):
for a while now, especially you years.
Speaker 16 (16:19):
Yeah, yeah, like you have to go on the road
and go to Vegas and all these neutral sites if
you want to see Arizona his best games, they don't
happen at McHale anymore, hardly during the non conference season.
At least.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
Tommy talked a little about that yesterday in terms of
you know, home and homes.
Speaker 15 (16:39):
Yeah, I mean, I think he's conflicted, I think.
Speaker 16 (16:41):
And I asked Stephen Pearl about that yesterday too. He's
a new new coach, of course, but they both seem
to be trying to strike a balance because I think
they know they both have said you know, and Tommy said,
you know that there's nothing better than the environment for him,
I think, to play at McHale. But you know, between
(17:02):
the lines, what he's saying is money's pulling in the
other direction. So he says, you know, we're having all
these discussions and things are being talked about on the
side and all this stuff, and basically it comes down
to money.
Speaker 15 (17:14):
I mean, that's just what it is. If you play
neutral sites, you can make a lot more money.
Speaker 16 (17:19):
I think I believe there's some television considerations that are better,
whereas if you have them at home, the television is
controlled by your conference, and you know, and then if
you and then now you've got these the players era
festivals just blown away all the other mts be able
to buy the amount of money that they're offering, and
so teams are giving up games to go there, you know.
(17:42):
And I think one thing Lloyd mentioned that's true is
they are expanding it next year to playing thirty two games,
which will mean a team like Arizona will actually have
fourteen non conference day. So maybe maybe they can use
that date.
Speaker 15 (17:54):
For a bigger home at home. But who knows, you know,
the way things are going.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
What do we think that next home and home kind
of game would be what would be another step up
from Auburn or of the same caliber that we would
want them to see play here in McHale, well, I mean.
Speaker 16 (18:11):
I think, you know, I mean, it's it's I think
this is, you know, as good as it gets. That
they're going to have Yukon coming in and as part
of that deal next year, and so you know, obviously
it doesn't get any.
Speaker 15 (18:22):
Better than that, probably, but you know, I don't know.
To me, I think that the interesting ones are these
ones that are you know, sec ACC, Big East, you know,
cross country deals that.
Speaker 16 (18:31):
You wouldn't normally, you know, ever see and maybe you'd
see it in a in a an MP somewhere or something.
So you know that that's it's that's about as good
as it gets. And I think to in Arizona, Ucla,
to their credit, they've they've agreed to play, but they're
playing all their games on neutral sites, you know, And
I think I think I got to think that most
(18:54):
fans would prefer to have them with McHale and PAULI.
So it's just I don't know, again, it's a balance,
and you know that I think this sovereign game though,
is probably about as good as as you could expect
at McHale in this environment.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
Yeah, yeah, no question you would talk to Tommy yesterday.
I was thinking about so many things. The update on
uh uh yon.
Speaker 16 (19:21):
I don't know what to think about that, but uh
he I guess you know, they said he was going
to practice yesterday and we'll see how it goes. I mean,
we all know that that Tommy Lay doesn't like to
talk about injuries.
Speaker 15 (19:33):
And that's his progative.
Speaker 16 (19:35):
He did say something after the game that he seemed
to be not you know, seemed to roll his ankle
and he was hoping he would play again, and that's
how they left it. And then all of a sudden,
I asked him about yesterday and he said, there's nothing,
nothing happened, no big deal. Why is there all the speculation?
And I'm thinking, I don't know. I mean, there wasn't any.
Speaker 15 (19:56):
You know, it's just there's no word. You know, you
don't have.
Speaker 16 (19:59):
When you have a void information, it's going to be
stilled by speculation. That's what happened though, That's exactly right,
And yeah, so you know, I mean, but I don't.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
Know by all appearance, it looks like he's gonna play,
that he's gonna be there, he's all right. I can't
remember how you phrased it, but it looks like he'll
be fun Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 16 (20:16):
I mean he's not you know, he's he's not proven
to to really mislead on these kind of things. I
think he really does believe he's probably going to be okay.
Speaker 15 (20:25):
And that that's fine.
Speaker 16 (20:26):
It's just that, you know, nobody knew that. And I
think because of the way he left the arena, didn't
come back, you know, Arizona didn't say a whole lot.
You know, he said what he said, and then there
was there was some you know, rumors that it was
kind of bad or you know, and so it kind
of kind of grew from there until until he put
that to rest yesterday.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
Welcome to basketball season, at you bet.
Speaker 4 (20:46):
I mean, just some insight that training staff is going
to keep those athletes medical as as private as possible.
Speaker 5 (20:53):
And I only say that from having worked with the
football team.
Speaker 4 (20:56):
If a player doesn't come back, it doesn't mean that
they're not going to come back at all for the
next game. There's just a certain protocol that they have
to put in place. To be able to see through
and because they may have told Tommy a day later
that it wasn't a big deal, he didn't feel and
he to address it because it wasn't a big deal.
Speaker 3 (21:12):
Well that's not going to be Bruce rescue the game.
Speaker 17 (21:15):
No it's not.
Speaker 5 (21:15):
But that's okay.
Speaker 15 (21:18):
No, I agree, I agree.
Speaker 16 (21:20):
I think that Actually I've kidded Justin Kokowski, the trainers
for men's basketball, you know, the last few years particularly,
and that's arguably even goes back to further than that,
they got a track record that they generally have fewer
injuries than most teams at their level.
Speaker 15 (21:38):
And that makes a difference. It makes a huge difference.
Speaker 16 (21:41):
And every time I ask him about it, I'm like, hey,
just I'm right about how you guys haven't any injuries
all year. To look at me like, please don't chink,
please don't write that story or whatever, but it's.
Speaker 15 (21:51):
It's kind of true, and and you're right. I mean,
they can turn them around. I mean, that's the thing
with ankles, Like the ankle.
Speaker 16 (21:57):
Injuries can look really bad like they did for evon
the other day, and then in forty eight hours, those
guys can work miracles with the technology and the and
the skill, they have no question about it. The only
thing that I wondered about was if it's a high.
Speaker 15 (22:12):
Ankle sprain or something really severe like.
Speaker 16 (22:14):
The one Kurt Crisa had a few years ago, that's.
Speaker 15 (22:17):
When you really can't do that.
Speaker 16 (22:19):
You it just takes time because the blood or whatever
it is, you know, doesn't it doesn't heal as fast
or not as my circulation.
Speaker 15 (22:26):
Whatever the case is. And you know, and they tried
that with Prisa a few years ago, and and you know,
he was, you know, he was very limited.
Speaker 16 (22:36):
And that was like after two years I think, you know,
I think of five days of heavy work with with
Justin Kokowski and you know, he gave it as all.
But you know, if you have something like that, it's
a different level. That's all I was trying to figure
out was at that level, but apparently not.
Speaker 7 (22:51):
Well.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
It was kind of a little back and forth, as
we all know.
Speaker 2 (22:54):
You and tell me have let's go back some big
games here, and it's a big game, but it doesn't
have the buzz. And you've been around long enough like
me to know the buzz buzz teams North Carolina coming
in Loots near the end of his career that was huge.
People are selling or tickets for a lot of money,
you know, Yukon back in the day when their head
coach was here in the two thousands, Michigan State, all
(23:16):
these teams.
Speaker 15 (23:17):
Yeah, this is the.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
Biggest game, but it doesn't have that buzz to me.
Although yeah, I don't know, although it is.
Speaker 15 (23:25):
So you're right, Steve.
Speaker 16 (23:26):
I mean, maybe Yukon will next year, but I mean,
you know, it does seem like that.
Speaker 15 (23:32):
Back in those days, those.
Speaker 16 (23:35):
Were the big games, and then you had Maui and.
Speaker 15 (23:37):
There was always those kind of a couple of big tournaments.
Speaker 16 (23:40):
But for the most part, big games were almost always
on campus.
Speaker 15 (23:45):
I think, you know, when you're talking twenty twenty five
years ago, and.
Speaker 16 (23:49):
Now those big games are you know, somewhere else, probably
less less than half the time on campus. I think
some of these conference challenges are helping, Like they had
the acc SEC ones, you know, just happening this week
and that that created a lot of excitement, but you know,
the Big twelve doesn't have anything like that currently then,
(24:09):
So yeah, a lot of these a lot of these
games are being played elsewhere.
Speaker 15 (24:12):
And it's it's it's it's tricky because schools have to
make money, they have to pay players, and yet fans want.
Speaker 16 (24:20):
The games at home, And you know, what are you
going to do if you're in that if you're in
that situation.
Speaker 15 (24:25):
So I don't know.
Speaker 4 (24:27):
I think, yeah, is it less about where the game
is and more about the time, Because that Arizona game
is at eight pm tomorrow Mountain time. That's ten o'clock Eastern.
So I mean those those those are some dedicated East
Coast fans to stay up and watch that game if
it goes for two or three and a half hours,
even four hours, if it were to go that long.
If they're foullying and stop the clock is stopping.
Speaker 3 (24:48):
It'll go. If that's the case, it'll go more than
well two and a half at the most. But football,
that was a case, yeah, And.
Speaker 4 (24:54):
I understand with football specifically in Arizona, it is so
hot that you have to have a seven o'clock start
until mid October at least, like it is a safety
protocol at that point for football. But for basketball, you
got two elite teams, both of which you would think
would draw decent crowds if you put it at a
twelve thirty slot, why would it be an eight o'clocks.
Speaker 16 (25:14):
Well, I mean, I think yeah. I mean, the one
argument you can make is you say, okay, it's late
Eastern time, but it's the only thing on at that time,
especially and it's on major it's on regular ESPN, So
any bar or any restaurant back in Massachusetts or whatever,
they're gonna have that game on.
Speaker 15 (25:34):
So there's something to be said for that.
Speaker 16 (25:35):
It may only be a few people watching, but champions
are if you're watching something of any kind of sports
at that hour, even on the East Coast, you're going
to tune in and see what Arizona Auburn are doing.
Speaker 15 (25:47):
So that there's helpful that way. I think.
Speaker 16 (25:49):
You know, I think over the years, I've got an
impression from Sean Miller and Tommy Lloyd that you know,
if you can be on ESPN or TNT or something,
you know that's you know, a standard, you know, top
Solve cable channel, you're just gonna do whatever they tell
you to do. And that's that's what happened here.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
So I was remissing in the games. Last year's Duke
game was pretty big with the buzz. I think that
was probably one of the last ones that you know
last year's return with the with their with their rookie
Cookie Cooper Cooper flag Well, real quick, did you were
you on the teleconference today with with what's his name?
Speaker 3 (26:25):
With Jay Billis?
Speaker 2 (26:27):
No?
Speaker 15 (26:27):
I wasn't. No, they're and uh, I only I actually
I had some other stuff going on, but I thought, you.
Speaker 16 (26:36):
Know, I'd rather talk with those guys after. I'm sure
they've watched Arizona, but it's it's more fun when they've
actually done the games, and I don't believe either of
them have so.
Speaker 2 (26:44):
Far this year, right, Okay, because I was too late
to get on it, so I didn't get on it
just to see what they were gonna say. But you'll
see them tomorrow. That's not an issue anything with the team.
Speaker 9 (26:53):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (26:54):
You know, obviously the freshman and my question to Tommy
yesterday about the freshmen, uh so far, so good?
Speaker 14 (27:00):
Down Yeah.
Speaker 16 (27:02):
I mean, you know that's the biggest kind of storyline
with this team is he's you know, his first four years,
he didn't have to rely on freshman anything close to
the way he's having to this year. And you know,
he was able to bring along guys like like Carter Bryant,
Hyland boswell as.
Speaker 15 (27:19):
Freshman, you know, and play him off the bench and
you know, make him.
Speaker 16 (27:22):
Feel comfortable or whatever. And this year, you know, he
had to throw at least two of them in the
starting line up. He ended up throwing three in you know,
And and Brayden Burry's is you know.
Speaker 15 (27:33):
Taking a little bit of time to adjust, you know,
to see how that goes.
Speaker 16 (27:36):
And you know, but overall, I think, yeah, you can't
really have any complaint but that that class, if you're
if you're those coaches, I.
Speaker 15 (27:44):
Wouldn't I wouldn't think.
Speaker 16 (27:45):
I mean, I kind of thought that talent level was high,
maybe as high as it's been under Tommy Lloyd, but
also thought that the floor was maybe a little bit
lower because you just don't know how those guys are
gonna play out and maybe how the chemistry is gonna
be affected with that kind of kind of a Barbelle
roster where you've got all these older guts, You've got
this core of older guys.
Speaker 15 (28:03):
And then a bunch of freshmen and how is that
going to work out?
Speaker 16 (28:06):
But so far, that's that's worked out really well. It
looks like, I mean, chemistry wise and production wise.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
Really the thing that I'm not concerned about because it's
not for me to be concerned. But you know, and
I know we've all seen it. The freshman hit a wall, right,
they hit a wall sometime in February late January, and
then then they recover. Whether it'll happen now or not,
it's to premature to talk about, but it's possible.
Speaker 16 (28:33):
Yeah, I mean, there's there's no question about that. And
then yeah, people, we've seen it over and over over
the years that people figure out how to play him,
you know, especial when they get in the Big twelve.
There's always a lot of familiarity within conferences and that
that'll be a challenge, especially you know, you can see,
you know, a guy like Cole Pete is as much
as he's open eyes and you know, proven himself physically
(28:55):
and you know, his quickness, things he can do, just
you know, they're you know, it's going to be a
grind for him going through the Big twelve. They're going
to throw stuff at him, and you know, I'm I'm
you know, he's shown he's gonna he's going to power
through it.
Speaker 3 (29:07):
But you know, I'm sure there'll be.
Speaker 15 (29:09):
Some adversity for him, and you know, and a lot
of those new guys.
Speaker 16 (29:13):
I think it may be helped a little bit that
they didn't start with any kind of false confidence in
that they got you know, those three games early and
then this game and then next week at Alabama. They're
getting tested so that the level of competition in the
Big twelve is not going to be, you know, really
any different, just it just be more consistent every week
instead of instead of the way it's been. But they'll
(29:34):
they'll you know, there's a good chance that they'll be
they'll be pretty well prepared for but you know, inevitably,
you know, sometime in January or something that they.
Speaker 15 (29:44):
Can hit you for sure.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
So I've covered this team for a long time, as
you know, and you you came in a little after me,
and you've covered a long time. Yeah, one of the
guys that has impressed me off the court, and he
impressed me on the court as well. And we've talked
to so many guys, to the Jefferson's of the world,
the Chenning Fries of the world, the ag Brown Metz
and the Jackson Terry's just the personalities, right, But I
don't know, I don't know if anybody's impressed me more.
(30:08):
And this is a stretch for me with made to
say this because I haven't spent a whole lot of
time with him, is Tobya Walker because he is very,
very impressive and how he speaks and how he plays
and he's well read, and just how he comes off.
Speaker 15 (30:22):
Yeah, I would. Yeah, I was thinking about something like
that the other day. I mean, he's got to be
up there as far as you know, interesting. Yeah, like
I said, well read just kind of.
Speaker 16 (30:34):
Yeah, I mean just how guys has quite a perspective
on things. And it's interesting the way between his intellectual
curiosity and I think he not now he's crediting his spirituality,
but you know, for his the way he's accepted as role.
Speaker 15 (30:50):
But I do think that this hit.
Speaker 16 (30:51):
He has a broad perspective on everything, and you bring
that into basketball and he is about you know, you know,
you always hear guys saying, you know, the credit to
the team, or I'm just doing what the coach wants
or whatever, but you get the feeling with Thelwalkie he
means it, and that he means in the sense that
he's there to to, uh, you know, be the best
(31:12):
possible piece he can to fit into this team. And
I think you know, deep down, most of these guys
know if they if they do that, that's going to
help them individually anyway. But you know, and he knows
he's not going to be he's not going to be
a lottery pick and a starter in the NBA. He
might get into the NBA as a guy who can
play a role. So maybe it bodes well for him
to do that. But to your point to Steve, I
(31:33):
think you're right. He's you know, he's always struck me
that way. I mean, a lot of times he'll ask
about the book clubs. But you know, if he or
whatever he's reading, I mean, the guy reads.
Speaker 15 (31:43):
You know, he's reading uh, you know, Told Story last
year or something, and you.
Speaker 16 (31:47):
Know, he's reading all these deep philosophical books. And and
then I think what DK asked him yesterday about something else?
He's reading about some kind of intelligence or.
Speaker 3 (31:57):
Whatever it was.
Speaker 2 (31:58):
I don't know, no, no, I I googled. I googled it,
and I can't remember what it was. But I'm going
to start to read that book because it's pretty impressive.
Speaker 16 (32:04):
Yeah, I know, maybe baby, maybe I should too, you know.
And and I think I think I remember when he
came here and I googled him just to get some background,
and this one of the blogs in the SEC or
wrote about how he's the most interesting man in the
SEC at Tennessee that here or whatever, and it detailed
some of this stuff. And then when I talked to
(32:25):
him about how, you know, his parents are he had Nigerian.
Speaker 15 (32:28):
Roots and he grew up in.
Speaker 16 (32:32):
Upstate New York and he commuted like almost two hours
each way every day to get to a school in
the Bronx to to go to you know, a pretty
good school as well as a good basketball program, and
just what he went through there and how he's studying
on the train back, and I just thought, you know,
this is before you know how it is deep, But
you didn't get to know players, yeah, and talk to
them or before they get to Arizona because you can
(32:52):
call them, you know, and stuff like that. And I
just left the conversation thinking, this.
Speaker 15 (32:57):
Guy is different and it's you know, it's yeah, it's.
Speaker 16 (33:00):
It's probably gonna it's probably gonna work out welfare Orzontha
to have him.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
All I know is if he graduates or when he graduates,
and he was looking for a job and I felt
like I had the job that he would want or
something that I would hire in a second.
Speaker 16 (33:16):
Yeah, I mean, and now it's in fact, after that thing. Yesterday,
I was asking about his favorite what he's doing, his
favorite class as fall or whatever he's doing to finish up,
and he just said he's he loves his accounting class,
a four hundred level accounting class, so you know, upper level.
I mean, so here's a guy like all this philosophy
or whatever, but apparently, you know, he wants to go
(33:38):
to go into business.
Speaker 15 (33:40):
He's got a mind for number two. He said, he
really likes that stuff. So he's just, yeah, really very
different kind of person.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
Right, Okay, Well, Bruce, thanks a bunch. He didn't talk
too much about tomorrow's game, but I think we all
expect a very good one, probably maybe a challenge about
at home. I still think that they'll beat him by
maybe double digits at home.
Speaker 15 (34:00):
Yeah, I think that this.
Speaker 16 (34:02):
Yeah, this should vote well for them at home. I mean,
Auburn's surpriably. I didn't think they'd be as good as
they are because I thought, you know, this is a
team that only returned one player from last year. Granted
he's a really good player. Todd Petaphord but and then
they switched coaches. You know, Bruce Pearl steps down basically
prompts Auburn to hire his son, which you know may
(34:23):
be fine in theory, but you know, still it's a
brand new coach with basically a brand new team. How
are they going to be And they've done pretty well
so you know, you know they they might be tough,
but but yeah, come in here. And for them, it'll
also be the second with the second week in a row.
Speaker 15 (34:38):
They've had to travel out west.
Speaker 16 (34:39):
Because they were in Las Vegas last week at the
Player zero thing, so that's.
Speaker 15 (34:43):
That's a tough ass.
Speaker 16 (34:44):
Plus they also had NC State at home, so they've
been they've been through it. I think Arizona's definitely got
a big advantage restwise and playing.
Speaker 15 (34:51):
At home and all that.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
Okay, thanks Bruce, I'll see you tomorrow. Appreciate it.
Speaker 15 (34:55):
Hey, thanks good talk to good.

This is I on the Ball on Fox Sports fourteen
fifty Want to take part in the show call up
Steve now went five to two oh four one six
seventy four for night.
Speaker 2 (38:47):
Hey, welcome back to my the Ball here on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera, your d Rckenzie and
you Ray. We have a lot of people in the house.
Anybody want to call please do five two zero for
one six seventy four four. Already when I was talking
about you kind of shook your head like you do
you know him? Do you know some of the guys,
but you just know kind of that.
Speaker 7 (39:07):
I just so I worked for camp Radio last year
for I did like play by playing color for some
of the games, and I don't know, he just really
always impressed me and just kind of became my favorite player,
just like you said, how how he speaks in press conferences.
Speaker 5 (39:21):
He's so smart, so well spoken.
Speaker 7 (39:24):
Yeah, just as a person and a player, I think, Yeah,
I don't know, he's one of my favorite.
Speaker 3 (39:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (39:28):
One of the things that Tommy has done, I think
over the last four or five years is and I
know he had a lot of guys from from Shawn's
a team that first year and you know these people
because you worked with I was gonna ask you who
you impressed you when you were here. He they actually
say they the ones he's bringing in are very very
basketball IQ in terms of basketball IQ and then regular IQ.
Speaker 3 (39:51):
Yeah, and they're good dudes, I know.
Speaker 4 (39:53):
But I think in the evolution that is college athletics,
you have to be a high IQ Q in and
out of basketball, on and off the court.
Speaker 5 (40:03):
It's the I think it's funny.
Speaker 4 (40:05):
Well not just that, but you got to have you
got to have that something that makes you special outside
of basketball. You can't have I'm gonna use the Kerk
career as the example. Again, you can't have someone that
is that polarizing on the court, yeah, and then not
have the support off the court to support the behavior
that's happening on the court.
Speaker 3 (40:27):
Ray you're doing in your head? Yeah, I feel like
that makes sense. I mean because that means that makes sense.
Speaker 5 (40:32):
Because I said it, and I wasn't sure if it
was going to make sense.
Speaker 3 (40:34):
At this point. It's like, you know, you're everyone's basketball
player in college. Yeah, like you know what I mean,
It's like they're all good. So it's like, what's going
to make you really stand out of what separates you
from Yes? Yeah exactly. Yeah, No, I can't it with
your curse. And I'm sure he is what he is though,
if you are who you are.
Speaker 4 (40:51):
Yeah, But it's I think that has evolved Tommy's selection
process of who he brings in. There's now a certain
type of person that he wants to represent the program
on the court and then off the court for the
long haul.
Speaker 2 (41:06):
Actually, this sounds like a pretty good story that'll end
up doing a lot of his guys are euro guys too,
international guys who are beyond mature.
Speaker 4 (41:14):
That's been his mo for since he's gotten Arizona though, so,
I mean, and he had that reputation when he was
at Gonzaga for who he was recruiting and bringing in,
So that doesn't surprise me. But it's a different culture
being over and they're expected of different things over there
compared to the US. I mean, if you're getting recruited
(41:34):
to play basketball and you're safe from Tempe Arizona and
you get recruited to come down and play an airs
play at the u of A, your level of expectation
is school was probably always second best. Your manners were
probably second best because you were spending eighteen out of
twenty four hours in a gym whether you were lifting weights,
you were with a technical coach, you were playing basketball
(41:55):
with a team, you were spending roughly eighteen hours in
the gym and school and everything else took back, and
I think that's.
Speaker 2 (42:02):
It's dated now right to your point of being, it's
changed times of change, and that's the case because uh,
he has a lot of I'm sure a lot of
other programs have a lot of those guys too, Yes,
international or otherwise where I.
Speaker 6 (42:15):
Think another point to make of that is like, you know,
kind of talking about the like personality and like kind
of wanting that like like deeper thinker, you know what
I mean, Because it's like these guys are getting given
their flowers like all the time, especially when they're from
America and in high school, you know what I mean,
Because it's like those are the guys at their school
or whatever league they're playing into. And I think a
really good example of like kind of speaking to that
(42:35):
was like Carter Bryant. It's like, you see this eighteen
year old meditating at half court, is like what the heck?
But then it's like, yeah, no, this guy's an awesome guy.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
And he's another guy, but he's not he was too
quiet or too shy, and we didn't get to know
him until the end, right because of who else, but
because we didn't know much about him but another good dude. Yeah,
who could have thought or flaunted his talent? Yeah, but
and he didn't.
Speaker 4 (42:57):
If you look at the evolution of Tommy's team, if
we start with one of those first years, you're Benedict Matherns,
You're Christian Coloco, You're You're Daal and Terry. Like I
really like Daleen and Terry both on and off the court.
He had that big personality, but he knew how to
use it effectively without destroying his teammates, the fans and
(43:18):
disrespecting the other team. And they think that is key,
and that's something that he's carried onto his professional career
to that point.
Speaker 2 (43:24):
I think that he used that to get him a
job at the NBA. Is he in the interview room
he won them over. Yes, in addition to being as.
Speaker 4 (43:32):
And that's where the personality aspect comes in, is you
want to be relatable, but you want to have it
be universal as well. Look at you, Look at you,
it's almost like I go to school that you actually
went to school, went to school, still.
Speaker 5 (43:48):
Going to school, Tato patata again.
Speaker 2 (43:50):
Anybody want to call in? How many time do we have?
We have eight minutes? Okay, so what to call?
Speaker 3 (43:55):
Five?
Speaker 2 (43:55):
Two oh four, one, six, seventy four, forty D's with me,
Kensey and Ray good to talk to to to Bruce,
anything that stood out with what he said, Tommy, Tommy's
being Tommy with this thing. You know, we were with
him for twelve minutes.
Speaker 4 (44:11):
There was some back and forth with him and him,
and I mean the part of it is, I'm like,
if the trainer and the athlete told Tommy that it
was no big deal within twenty four hours, Tommy probably
didn't figure it was worth saying anything depressed because it
was no big deal. He knew he was going to
be back out on the court playing a game and
was backed out of practice.
Speaker 3 (44:25):
And we know this drill. If they're gonna tell us,
they're not going to tell us. But they're not going
to tell us. Yeah, and we'll wait till it's a
wait and see.
Speaker 4 (44:33):
And there's there's lots of new technology out there for
athletic training, and as someone who's been in those rooms
as those were coming along, each trainer has a different
preference as to what they would like to use. It
does make a difference whether it's a low ankle sprain
versus a high ankle sprain, whether you spend time in
a boot or you don't spend time in a boot.
But doing certain therapies and rehabs like you can turn
around pretty quickly. I say that as someone who's had
(44:54):
probably a dozen sprain ankles between both of my ankles
and have not done enough rehab for the long terms.
So the fact that they could get him turned around
that fast tells me he's going to be just fine.
Speaker 5 (45:05):
It's not super major.
Speaker 2 (45:06):
And that's what he said, He's going to be fine,
So we'll see, Yes, we'll see. Tomorrow's going to be fine.
Speaker 3 (45:11):
And the kid's eighteen too, and he got back to
that exactly. But back in our day, you know what
they tell us, put a little dirt on it.
Speaker 4 (45:19):
Really, that's what I was told every time I rolled
an ankle, Rub some dirt in it.
Speaker 3 (45:23):
Get back on that horse.
Speaker 5 (45:25):
Is it broken or bleeding?
Speaker 3 (45:26):
You got a call? Yes, Hello, you're on the air,
and iind the ball. Who's this oy?
Speaker 15 (45:31):
It's nice to have gee or no jayat Friday.
Speaker 3 (45:36):
It's a good swep for me.
Speaker 15 (45:37):
Yes, Howard, it's a great Friday.
Speaker 12 (45:39):
Hey, yeah, it's so wonderful in our world. Yeah, we're
talking about Galen Terry.
Speaker 11 (45:48):
He could have used another year.
Speaker 12 (45:52):
Because have you been following Caleb Love? He is really
playing well.
Speaker 3 (45:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (45:57):
I saw that he had twenty points last night recently,
but what was is because he's been up and down.
Speaker 12 (46:02):
Too, right, but they're a different night. He had closer
to twenty eight. I think we had like six three pointers.
Speaker 3 (46:09):
Yeah, I remember that.
Speaker 12 (46:10):
Yeah, yeah, and and and anyway, I saw my world's
great with the Wildcats playing so well and the Bears,
and of course we got to go to the Sun's
uh Steve, and we got to talk about a bet
because I'm gonna, you know, we have a bet. And
if I've already won that because they're gonna they're gonna
not only be in the play and they're gonna probably
(46:31):
not even need to be in the play in But
but I still owe you one. I still owe you
a Uh so that's a wash. I still owe you one.
I'm good at keeping track, okay, but.
Speaker 3 (46:43):
What like what a bottle of wine? What do you show?
What do you owe me?
Speaker 11 (46:46):
Well, no dinner or whatever, I've already.
Speaker 12 (46:49):
Won before even but I want to make another.
Speaker 11 (46:51):
One because we're gonna not only are we gonna.
Speaker 12 (46:54):
Be in the not me being a play in Golden
State will be in. There might be a higher seed,
but they will be in the playing game.
Speaker 3 (47:01):
Okay with what I'm saying? Yeah, I'm okay with that.
Speaker 12 (47:03):
Another one they're going to go not even need to play?
Speaker 3 (47:07):
Yeah, no, I agree with you. I agree.
Speaker 12 (47:08):
I think you've got you've got to be in the
first six seeds to not be in a playing game, right,
I agree with seven and have to play nine and ten?
Speaker 3 (47:14):
Yeah, So anyway, thanks, are you going to you're going
to the game tomorrow? You go to the game?
Speaker 12 (47:20):
Well, no, I don't go to I don't have tickets,
but I'm glad listening to to g No. No, no,
I like to show up because my wife, you know,
works at the foundation, so she gets tickets and and
it's like, I didn't know what time the game was
until D spout it off. Until that's an eight o'clock game. Yeah,
I didn't even know what time it was.
Speaker 3 (47:39):
So you're not going to the game, Well, I mean
things could change. How are you just challenged the last
minutes three times. She could, she could have it.
Speaker 11 (47:51):
She's having her Christmas party.
Speaker 12 (47:52):
Who knows that they're going to let lose?
Speaker 11 (47:54):
You know, it depends on how many.
Speaker 12 (47:56):
Donors are not going to go, right, I mean that's
what they because they have a lot of tickets to
give donors. And if the donors don't want to go tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (48:04):
All right, you know it's too late. All right, thanks,
take care of how So, Kenzie. These are the callers
that we get. Yes, no, maybe. And Howard. I love Howard.
Howard used to go visit us at the Casinos Tucson
fan base right there.
Speaker 5 (48:19):
Yeah, how Howard's a solid collar.
Speaker 4 (48:22):
He's been calling in since before I was an internight
o'clock game.
Speaker 3 (48:27):
It's been on the schedule for eight o'clock for a while.
Speaker 4 (48:29):
Yeah, well that's soon as some of us that like
to go to bed before midnight.
Speaker 5 (48:35):
I know, I'm an old fart.
Speaker 4 (48:36):
I'm an old fart these days. I like a normal
bedtime and getting up at a normal hour. And it's fine,
you're not going you have work.
Speaker 3 (48:45):
You watch it from there. You're purchased your own part. Yeah,
I'll get I'll give it an eye.
Speaker 2 (48:49):
Yeah, it should be a fun gay Okay, anybody else
want to call? We have about five minutes, maybe like
three three minutes. Oh, we got three minutes. Okay, one
more call if we can't five to four forty not
you can have breaking news, right, yes, and then we're
going to talk to Mike Jones.
Speaker 3 (49:04):
Yes, like Jones. Let's not go with the reference. I
promise you he will get it. I can almost guarantee
that he's going to get it.
Speaker 5 (49:11):
Okay, continue looking at each other like we don't know
what you're.
Speaker 3 (49:14):
Going to going shaft to, like I turn your no, no.
Speaker 6 (49:18):
No, no, I know what you're talking about. But now
there was a rapper called Mike Jones, and that was
the thing is like Mike.
Speaker 3 (49:22):
Jones, and I'm too old for this, so you won't
miss old soul. You didn't get it too, they're not culture.
Speaker 10 (49:31):
I need him here.
Speaker 3 (49:31):
Don't piss them all goodness? Okay, cool?
Speaker 2 (49:37):
Uh so we'll see Thanks Howard for the call, I think, yes,
that's always I had. I hadn't heard from Howard in
a while, see it.
Speaker 5 (49:43):
Because I'm here, You've been here from people that you
haven't heard him in a while, because I show up.
Speaker 3 (49:49):
We haven't talked to Horse racing.
Speaker 5 (49:50):
But that's okay, there's still time.
Speaker 3 (49:53):
How do you uh, when's it the next week?
Speaker 2 (49:55):
Uh?
Speaker 10 (49:56):
No?
Speaker 4 (49:56):
So symposium is the eighth through the tenth. It's on
by the University of Arizona. They've been doing it for
the last six or seven years now. It's a really
great event. Industry leaders get all gathered in one place.
There's lots of panels. We started roughly between eight and
nine o'clock in the morning and we go till five
o'clock to six o'clock and at night, and it's going
(50:17):
to be a lot of fun. I'm excited to do
some networking and see what other opportunities might be out
out there for me and hors raising.
Speaker 3 (50:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (50:22):
I talked to Baffort too through school. He's not coming,
he said, But it's the only symposium in the country,
right correct, college wise, it.
Speaker 4 (50:29):
Is, I mean the school too, Yes, I mean it's
the only thing for a lot of different versions. There
are plenty of other conferences around, but it is one
of the few places that we get this many industry
leaders in one spot during a single time of the year.
Speaker 3 (50:45):
You can bring out your handy dandy business card.
Speaker 5 (50:47):
Yes, sir, I was just on Eye on the ball.
Speaker 3 (50:50):
Oh yeah, I listened to it all the time.
Speaker 5 (50:52):
That's what's going to be on my bade.
Speaker 3 (50:53):
You got to go in the break so we'll come back.
