Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services Insure
your most prized possessions.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Very good afternon everybody, Welcome to Eye on the Ball
here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I think this might
be a pretty good show today. We have a lot
to talk about number one basketball country. Well, I think
I know, I think I know, I don't know. I
don't think offen one. I'll here what you got momentum
right now? Steve doesn't exist. Oh, actually this could be true.
(00:36):
Monday month, Monday creeping. That's Troy. That's one ask me
those dumb questions. You like. This is what we do?
Speaker 3 (00:46):
You like?
Speaker 2 (00:47):
You like eggnog? I love eggnog, So you know little
you know something something something. I can't have agnog? You allergic?
Speaker 4 (00:55):
So was never I mean my allergy is not as severe,
but had eggnog. Welcome to the TMI version of Eye
and the Ball. I'll take I'll take hot chocolate and
you know a little something in the hot chocolate.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Yeah, a little hey show. Today we have Jay Compos
State champion from Mike mountin Man.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
You know that guy, Jay Compos coming from Sabino and
then Micah winning everywhere.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Does his win. He'll be on our three. We're gonna
get him early, so we're gonna get him through fifteen
guys to catch a fight. And then in the second
hour some guy named Brent Brennan.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
Yeah, you know a guy that uh not a lot
of fans loved about this time of year ago.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
No, it's transitioned, baby, I mean give me months ago, yeah, two,
three months ago. Yeah, yeah, I just know what a
great fortune for him.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Just a dude, Just a dude who's winning football games.
And we'll talk to him at the four fifteen four
seventeen look forward to that. I have a lot of
questions about some things that I have no idea about.
One probably knows what I'm talking about. So we'll keep
that attle bit. We'll keep that a secret until we
help remind me just forget. But I think that's going
to be it. So him and then we'll talk a
lot about today's announced on today's voting. But Arizona being
(02:07):
number one not a shock, right, although there was some
thought maybe Michigan would be able to kind of supersede
them or surpass them. Yeah, I saw some talk about Michigan.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Some talk about Duke from national media, but you know,
when you look at it the end of the day,
there's no question. There is honestly number one team in
the country today, today, tomorrow, we'll talk about it Sunday.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
That's so what happens, see what happens. I was counting
over the weekend because anticipation of this, the number of
the times that they've been number one throughout the since
the beginning in eighty eight, eighty nine, eighty eight, I
think it was I thought it was thirty times. It's
forty times, forty weeks. And you know how many times
they've been a number one in that time, just once?
Just once. So that's a two point five percent chance
(02:49):
I think of being number one, I think that's about right.
Because being number one in November December doesn't guarantee you anything.
I think what it does. And I said this two
years ago when they beat Duke. The expectations were unrealistic
when they beat Duke, because then everything heightens and he says, oh,
they got it, they're gonna get to they're gonna and
(03:09):
then when you don't get to the final four, it
turns out to be a disappointment. Yeah, are we in
the same spot now? No, I think this team has
more substance than that team. Though wait wait wait, wait,
so tell me what you My point is, they're gonna
a lot of weight's going to be on this team,
and if they don't get to the final four, well
here we go again. Another yeah, but I.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Mean doesn't matter that they were number one. Isn't that
the way in the Arizona fans going to think that
they don't get.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Okay, and that's my true but this heightens that. Well,
they're the best team and you know, yeah, they should
have been there. And one of loots criticisms from people
who know or don't know, is that he should have
won more titles. There are other teams out there that
try to win titles. Duke's the Florida's of the world.
Bla blah. They're under the same type of stress and
(03:56):
pressure don't win a title. And I'm not definding lut
You know, he had some pretty good team, but not always.
It's not always those cases where that team wins the title.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
Well, and again, this is why college basketball is great.
It's not the best team that wins the title. Because
you're talking about a one offer game and a lot
of upsets happened. If you had a seven game series
college basketball, maybe Arizona would have more titles. Maybe a
lot of other teams would have more titles. Yes, and
then your team's like North Carolina State and those of
the world, they would not have championships.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Right, So I told you earlier today one just the
odds out because I get sent that crap. Who's the favorite?
Don't answer this because you know who's the favorite to
win the title? Odds Wi's Vegas. I'm gonna say Yukon two.
They're two, ten to one. I think it was ten
to one. I think so Michigan, Okay, six and a
(04:47):
half to one, Michigan Yukon duke Arizona might be eight.
Uh eight to one, yeah, eight to one, right, eight
to one, but number two in the in the favorite duke,
I think at ten maybe nine, and and it was
one of at twelve twelve to one, twelve to one.
If you if your local you put twenty bucks in
that two hundred sixty bucks pay day, yeah, if you're
(05:08):
you know, if you think about it. Uh so, we'll see.
But there's like, what did you say to you give
me a stat.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
I actually just uh, someone retweeted it, so give me
a second. It was about the top twelve teams ranked
in week six. Yeah, the top twelve teams ranked in
Week six. More are the last like twenty or so
national champions came from that group. So that would mean Arizona, Duke, Michigan,
(05:36):
Iowa State, Yukon, Purdue, Houston and Zaga, Michigan State, BYU Louisville,
and Alabama. Someone from that twelve is more than likely
going to win the national championship.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Yeah, I would not bet the field. I would bet
those twelve.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
Yeah, you know, well mostly in my opinion because I
think if you look at the top four after that,
I think there's a big falloff.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Was there Michigan. I think Michigan on a Yukon on,
a Michigan Duke I was staged Yukon. That's five maybe
five maybe. I'm just saying if you take those four,
in my opinion, I would bet the fun. I would
bet Yukon. I would bet Yukon not only because they've
been there before. He is a good coach, they played
(06:21):
for him hard, and I wouldn't rule out Arizona too.
I mean, you were there Saturday. Yeah, you've said something
different about this team. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
To me, this is a team that has the toughness
that you saw last year. So to me, this is
the second time the Tommy Lloyd's team has had a
toughness about them, but an elite level talent like the
first season. The first season they had elite little level talent,
but they were.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Very soft bend.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
Last year, I thought the talent level wasn't where it's
usually been over the last couple of years, but they
were very tough. They were able to overcu This seems
like a good gel of the two. And again you
look at gart you good point guard play Jayden Bradley.
I think that's the ultimate keyed Arizona. If you go
in night in and night out and you have the
best point guard, the best player on the court well
(07:09):
as basketball, you're gonna win a lot of games and
come tournament time, point guard play matters.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
Yeah, let me say this. You guys are young, so
you guys can answer this however you want, But I
do want to open the phones after we talked to
Jay compos at the second hour when we have a
lot of time, because we're gonna have an extra five minutes.
Is this because I saw this on Facebook yesterday after
they beat Auburn and saw the other places that this
is the best team at Arizona in forever after they
(07:37):
beat the crap out of Auburn. And I know Recncy
Bias Bias has a lot of playing this. I don't,
but I don't think so. I don't think so. I've
seen a lot of Arizona teams beat the crap out
of very good teams and everybody gets all giddy and
blah blah blah and say this is I've saw it
twenty years ago. There are guys scouts on the row
(07:58):
talking about, God, this is a national cham ship team.
A week later they get beat. You know what do
you think the best? The best team?
Speaker 4 (08:04):
I think this is the best team since Aaron Gordon
and Nick Johnson fourteen fourteen fourteen that went to the
lead eight and but they went.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
Back to back. Remember they kind of the same team,
but different.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
Yeah, a little different. I think I think it's much
better than the fifteen team that went back the second
time around. And again, I think this is the most
talented team Tommy's ever had at Arizona.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Most tell yeah for Tommy and that first one was
pretty damn good with sewn and and I think the
people who were talking about, oh he's doing it with
Shawn's you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 4 (08:36):
Well, first of all, Sean would have done with those players.
And Ben Mathron is in a lottery pick, a top
ten pick, and Christian Cloco isn't playing in the NBA
today if Sean Miller coached him. So yeah, I mean
it was a very good team, but this seems different.
This team just has a different feeling and vibe and
talent around it.
Speaker 5 (08:57):
It was the first complete showing they had this season.
Obviously against Florida and UCLA and Yukon they had good showings.
I didn't think it was complete. I think this last
game against Auburn was pretty complete. You got a little
bit of everything from everyone. I'll say this, Auburn's not good, and.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
Then that's another thing I think, and that's another thing. Yeah,
I don't even know where to go with this, because
if you beat a one hundred thousand dollars horse beats
a fifty thousand dollars horse, that's what should happen. And
by many lengths. This is that many lengths at home. Yeah,
I mean, they had no answer for the size download
on the post and we talked about fight you went
(09:36):
with us. I talked to a beat writer on the show.
They had no one over six to seven or whatever.
Speaker 4 (09:41):
Okay, and after a while, once they got punched in
the mouth, it was over.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
It was over. Yeah. Yeah, I wasn't pretty.
Speaker 5 (09:49):
It could have been a lot uglier for Auburn if
the refs hadn't.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
It's kind of slowed down the game.
Speaker 5 (09:55):
Yeah, a good stretch between the ten minute mark and
about the five minute mark.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
I was really impressed with it. And I fully disclosure,
I didn't go to the game. It's one of the
only ones I missed in three some years. I had
an obligation. But what I was impressed with, at least
with the videos I saw the crowd Troy you, I
mean you won. We went and looked at each other
and said, Okay, I get it. Now.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
I'll talk about my feelings about the crowd. Okay, go
ahead at a different point because we got to go.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
Oh we do Okay, great, We're gonna get Jake Compost
on to the side and have him for above fifteen minutes.

How are you doing?
Speaker 2 (15:33):
I'll find how's that sound?
Speaker 3 (15:36):
You know this sounds great?
Speaker 12 (15:38):
I started thinking in today after kind of a busy weekend.
Obviously got back late on Friday night and pretty busy
on Saturday. But it definitely feels good to be, uh
where we're at right now, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
When did you This is the dumb question because I
probably know when you felt after moving over to replace
Nugent that you maybe this could that it might happen,
that you had a sense that could have happened.
Speaker 12 (16:00):
Thought in the summertime watching the kids work that there's
no way anybody's going.
Speaker 3 (16:03):
To be it's with the size, and I felt the
depth that we had.
Speaker 12 (16:06):
And all of a sudden, the real season hits, and
you know, we start off two and two and I'm like, jish.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
I hope we make the playoffs. That's kind of where
we're at that point in the season. But the credit
the kid we rebounded.
Speaker 12 (16:16):
You know, our coaching staff was amazing, did a good
job of coaching them up every day and we got
better every week, and you know, we were playing our
best football when it matter most, and that was the
last four.
Speaker 4 (16:24):
Games Jay, you know, coming over from Sabino and going
over to MICA and just the early years in the
build up towards this, I mean, what what is this
moment like for you because you were there in the
early years, even before taking over the head coaching job
and watching this program grow and helping it grow.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
Yeah, it's kind of full circle for me.
Speaker 12 (16:44):
Especially on Friday night even mentioned that, you know, twenty
years ago to the night was my first ever state
championship game as a head coach and two thousand and
five against Cactus at the UFA Stadium, and I thought, shoot,
we don't win a tonight, but we'll get one sooner
or later.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
As can happen. You know, this isn't too hard. Years later,
you know, finally came to the point where we're able
to get it.
Speaker 12 (17:03):
So it was it's been a process and coming to
mic come out, and obviously we lay the foundation for
a lot of success, and not just football, but all
of our programs in the classroom and on the field
and the course as well. So we just have a
good thing going. We have a great culture over there,
and we're.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
Set up for success across the board and all of
our programs.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
How does that success get the next success? Because I
think once, once you'd like tap that thing, it starts
to flow. Is that true? You feel that with the
with the people coming back?
Speaker 11 (17:33):
You know?
Speaker 12 (17:33):
I think so from a standpoint of now we've got
the people in place and the process and order. We
got our way training program that's really strong, and our
kids believe in what we're doing, and we went from
one coach to another and really, you know, after a
couple of little early season hiccuffs, didn't really miss a
beat and showed a lot of strength.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
Across the board. So we're in a really good place.
Speaker 12 (17:51):
We have phenomenal kids and some outstanding coaches, and you
know a lot of community support from our parents all
the way to our staff, which is amazing, and the
people in our community.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
Really I love Mike Mountins support our programs.
Speaker 4 (18:02):
What was that bus ride feeling back, finally getting to
experience that you talked about twenty years.
Speaker 12 (18:09):
Yeah, it was funny because normally on an out of
town and road trip game, about half the kids go
home with their parents. So I ordered about a half
the amount of food that normally would Well, of course,
because we wanted everybody to want to ride the bus home,
so it was a great bus ride home.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
Had stopped to get a little bit more food for him.
Speaker 12 (18:23):
But it was all worth it and had a great
ride home and put a lot of work into it.
So I think they wanted to enjoy one last ride together,
you know, as a football team, because it was really
a post group of kids who went through some adversity
and found a way to get it done.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
It's funny when you talk about that twenty years, it
reminds me of Josh Passion.
Speaker 13 (18:39):
Right.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
Here's a freshman playing at U of A not really
playing a whole out, but just part of the team,
and they win ninety seven. He calls his dad and says,
dad will win the national title. It's going to be
like this all the time. You know, it's it's easy,
and for you you get there and don't win, and
then don't I think you had four shots or a
few shots, right, and do you think, Oh man, it's
tougher than I think, and it's gonna I mean, never
(19:00):
get it.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
You know, it really is.
Speaker 12 (19:04):
And that's to you know, we were always playing up
one division, sometimes two divisions, more than what are enrollment
nicated just because we thought that's where we wanted to be.
So we got to the point in time where we
have some good teams, but not always enough depth to
be able to get it done at the end. And
it was nice being here at MICA and having that depth.
At end of the season, we're as healthy and I
been in any season really. I mean football to contact sport,
(19:25):
a collision sport where you're going to lose some kids,
and we're lucky enough to be as healthy as we've
been the whole season for that last four game stretch.
Speaker 4 (19:33):
You know, football is one of the ultimate team sports,
but you're in an era where you're seeing social media
and il in college this and that, and it's more
about the individual with transfers in this and at the
college level. But you're seeing, you know, a lot of
commitment videos here, a lot of hey I'm worried about
going here. How how difficult is it to keep that
(19:53):
team culture, team bond together at the high school level
with how things have changed around the country.
Speaker 12 (20:00):
You know, it's this day and age everybody wants to
put every good play they make on social media, and
it's really like a me first type attitude, not just
with with high school teams, but across the board is
kind of what you see. So you know, kids obviously
see what's all going on out there and they want
to do the same things. But as a coach, I
think the real secret to the whole thing is getting
everybody to buy in to it's one team. It's a
(20:23):
group of people with one common goal. And once you
can get them to do that.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
And you can take them to different heights. And that's
what we did this year.
Speaker 12 (20:29):
The social media thing, of course, we had to address
that and just keeping our targets small and folks on
what we can control and not make it easier for
people to get motivated to come and play us because
we're saying things, are doing things that bring unneeded attention
to ourselves.
Speaker 3 (20:42):
The attention is going to come. Like right now, we
get plenty of attention, but it's for the.
Speaker 12 (20:45):
Right reasons because we went out and heeded and played
the best game of the year on the biggest stage.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
And that's all the attention you need.
Speaker 12 (20:51):
And if you get that goal, that mindset across the
whole team, then you can do some pretty special things.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
So I asked you, I ask this of all the
coaches that come on or most of them. And I
don't think Jay, you've been on the show before, but
I don't think I've asked you this. What do you
think your secret sauce is to your success? Because you
know it doesn't happen by accident. You've gotten to a
number of championships. Now you finally win it. But you
know what I'm saying, success doesn't just fall into a lap.
Speaker 12 (21:16):
Well, I think from a head coaching standpoint, what you
have to look at is what is your team needs
you to be in that moment in time. And sometimes
you have strong coaches in certain areas you know in
the game, and you let them kind of go and
do what they need to do, and maybe.
Speaker 3 (21:28):
You're need some more support in other areas.
Speaker 12 (21:30):
You got to fill those gaps in and make sure
the teams getting across the board what they need. So
I think the secret is being adaptable and being able
to overcome adversity and being able to get kids and
coaches and everybody you know to believe in what the
common theme is, what are we trying to accomplish? Well,
how do we do that? And I always break things
in a small chunks. What can we do today? In
this practice to get better, and that's Monday, and then
(21:50):
we're worry about Tuesday on Tuesday. And if you break
them the small pieces, it becomes a little bit more
attainable and easier to achieve, as opposed to thinking, all
we got to get in this two game losing streak
we're in, you know, let's put all our focus on
this one Friday night. Well, it's not Friday night. It's
what you do Monday through Thursday that really gets you
ready for Friday night.
Speaker 4 (22:07):
You know, there's a lot of ups and downs throughout
the season. And you said overcoming adversity. Was there one
game in particular that you felt like the switch was
flipped that you can look back and be like that
that was the moment that kind of changed things.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
For you guys.
Speaker 12 (22:22):
Well, I mean, going back, I think our low point
was Sunnyside. We didn't play as well as we wanted to,
you know, coming out a team that had gone fourtune
and Z. We went out and lost our second game
in a row, and the hate train it was coming
full speed at us, you know, particularly at me and
the quarterback. And that was a defining moment and a
team could go one of two ways. Either they could
tank the season and go downhill or find a way
(22:42):
to fix what's going on and get better from there.
And our kids weren't totally all on board at that
point in time, but you know, we kept on taking
one practice at a time, and the defining game that
I felt they started really believe in what my message
was and what we could do as a team. We
played a Walden Grove who's a really good football program
(23:03):
over there at their place, and that was the game
that we had to win, not for playoff seeding, but
also for the regional championship.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
You know, that was a really important game, and.
Speaker 12 (23:12):
We were able to go through and and win that
game in a hostile environment and it was a close game.
So at that point in time, I felt the ship
and the attitude of the team, and we got better
from that point forward every single week the rest of
the season and exponentially.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
So I felt in the playoffs, how many kids are
going to college to play.
Speaker 12 (23:32):
You know, I think we'll happen between seven and tennis.
You know, with all the nil and the portal. It's
hard this day and age with college recruiting for high
school kids because they kind of get looked over after,
you know, all the portals and the transfers and all
that stuff. So I think we'll have a couple of
Division one players, Broder Schmid being one of them, potentially
Roddy Carson and Ina van Winkle long snapper, but many
guys will play just to depend on what level they'll
(23:54):
play and what school they'll play on. But we'll definitely
have some kids I'll go out to play at the
second level, and we have some underclasses in that are
going to be big time players that Yeah. I don't
know if you watch the game, but at one point
in time we had two freshmen and two sophomores on
offense when we scored a ninety six yard touchdowns. So
there's plenty of talent in the system and there's no
reason we can't continue the success that we've had in
the past.
Speaker 2 (24:13):
That was my last question. I know you got to go,
how many you guys do you have coming back to
the significant significant players.
Speaker 12 (24:20):
Yeah, so we're graduating in twenty five seniors this year,
and we're bringing back twenty seven juniors from softmores and freshmen.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
So we have a good four group coming back.
Speaker 12 (24:28):
Plus we had an undefeated freshman team and have some
great players on it.
Speaker 3 (24:32):
We had a really strong JV team, so I think
we have enough talent.
Speaker 12 (24:35):
And the big thing is we're going to be in
A four eight for one more year and then we'll
move up to five A. And you know, we would
be able to have the depth at the specially the
offensive defensive line to compete at the five A level.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
We'll make sure.
Speaker 12 (24:47):
You know, that's gonna be a big question for us
as a move into five A.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
Not next year, but the rep of that.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
Okay, coach, safe travels. I appreciate your time. Congrats again,
and I'm sure they love you and Veil.
Speaker 12 (24:58):
Hey, guys, I always appreciate it, and thank yes for
having me on the show.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
And thanks for all you do for a sports you know,
thank you, coach, appreciate it. Thank you, Jake. Another state title?
Pretty cool? You follow concruiting, right, we have time. It's improved, right,
football in southern.
Speaker 4 (25:17):
Arizona, it's improved.
Speaker 2 (25:20):
It's improved.
Speaker 4 (25:21):
I think it's a little bit more even now in
terms of like a here at South Point with like
five six different you know, super hard players. Balance you know,
it's balancing out a little bit. I think the issue
that Tucson has. Back in the day, you saw Sunnyside,
you saw Sabino, you saw Tucson High. With these really
(25:42):
really darn good teams. There's just so many schools, yeah,
and so everything it kind of saturates itself. So when
you go and compete against these Phoenix schools like Scott Stelsuorrow,
I don't know if they're any good anymore, to be honest,
but or a Hamilton or a Chandler. All of a
sudden there's team of those types of players. So it's
(26:03):
just per Kapita. It's tough for Southern Arizona teams, right.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
No, It's funny because one of the things when Bijan
was playing right here in Tucson and the Ransom says, well,
he could be Arizona good, but he's better than Arizona good.
You know what I'm saying. Some of the criticisms, yeah.
Speaker 4 (26:16):
Oh yeah, I mean he took ridiculous criticism. I covered
Bijon for you guys during that time. I remember some
reporters that were like, he's he's Arizona good, but he's
not like a Texas good or Oklahoma good guy.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
It's like, what are you watching. Yeah, like, there's no question,
there's a knock. I mean there's an un it's a
biased knock because you're here in Tucson. But but there's
some dudes. Yeah, there's some dudes.
Speaker 4 (26:39):
I think where it gets hard for Tucson and really
Arizona as a whole is you look at the defense
and offensive line. Okay, they're big, but who are they
going up against? And you've seen it throughout the years.
Arizona get a guy, Hey, he's a three star guy,
high three star guy, big dude, he didn't do anything.
Or you have the complete opposite Jordan Morgan, who they
(27:00):
are able to develop, but he struggled his first couple
of years and then jud comes in right staff. He's
a first round draft pick. So it just takes some developing.
But it is harder to judge the offense and defensive line.
Speaker 2 (27:11):
Okay, no, thank you, Jay. We're gonna take a break.
We're gonna maybe get a call or two because I've
heard this over the weekend. This is the best team
they've ever seen for Arizona. Yeah, no, no, And they said,
and I'm thinking, way hold your horses. That's been some
pretty damn good teams. I was gonna say that last
twenty okay, maybe possibly even then, Well, okay, we'll talk

Speaker 2 (31:25):
That's why when I called you, Troy, almost called you

I like to call them the same name either way.
You don't. When you have kids, you'll understand who what
are you?
Speaker 3 (31:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (31:36):
Yeah, you get your parents probably do the same thing. Yeah, yeah,
you know, Oh my dad does. My mom's pretty good
about it. She loves you more, Troy. Uh, there's no
no more of in my family. Oh yeah, it's equal
wink wink. Yes, yes, Hey, you know who's the best team?
The best team? And you say twenty years maybe? No, ten, no,
(31:59):
maybe twenty maybe? Well I think she is pretty damn
good and it's way early. I mean, come on, that's
way early to talk about it. And have they played well? Yes, undeniable?
Are they the best team in the country. We don't
know what they are right now, at least in the rankings.
What does that get you free ice cream somewhere?
Speaker 4 (32:18):
I mean, come on, I'm surprised Tommy even commented on it.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
I didn't listen to the who asked the question? And
how was the question? What do you think about being
number one?
Speaker 5 (32:28):
How was any conversations about possibly being number one? I
think I think because he asked about the Iowa State game,
do you watch any of it? And then do you
think this team is the number one?
Speaker 2 (32:39):
Do you what?
Speaker 5 (32:39):
Does it have any meaning to your team? Or any
conversations in the locker room? Tommy Tommy said, from Tommy
Tommy and Tommy Fashion said, well, there's bigger things ahead
for us, but we don't shy away from it.
Speaker 2 (32:51):
Yeah. And I did that story last week when I asked,
did you see the other games and do you see
all the good teams? YadA YadA, without saying you know,
being top rank because it doesn't really matter. There's a
bunch of good teams, So go ahead, you're going to
talk about that with He talked about it.
Speaker 3 (33:04):
No.
Speaker 4 (33:04):
I was just shocked that he was like, oh, it's
definitely something that you know you have to pay attention to,
but you know it doesn't matter, and that I thought
he was just going to straight up say yeah, Bruce, Bruce, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
it's December, I don't care. Right, That's what I thought it.
Speaker 2 (33:19):
Was, And truthfully, I think that's what he believes, which
is great because it's true. You know it's November, and
what do you you know, you're not judged on this.
You're gonna say, oh, we lost in the first, second,
third round, but we were ranked number one for a
long time in two thousand and three, I think it
was we talked about this with Rhino. They were ranked
the longest any team has been ranked for number one,
(33:39):
and they lost in the Sweet sixteen Sweet sixteen to
get to the lad Eate. No, they lost the lad
Ate to Kansas. So what does all that mean? You
can't you can't exchange it for anything. How long was that?
It was? Well, six seven weeks, six seven weeks if
not more. I don't have the thing in my bag. Yeah,
(33:59):
they have Hassan, they had Andre, they had Salim, they
had all these guys, you know, Channing. They lost to Kansas,
a team they had already beaten earlier in the season.
So it's way too early to talk about this. Yeah,
I mean we're not even We're not even at ten games. No, No,
I think Tommy handles this stuff well. If anything, you know,
I know he gets on some of us, and he
(34:19):
talked about that this week. I like getting on you guys,
but you guys are the storytellers, YadA YadA, And he's
right with this. I mean, it's way too early. Teams
are beating up each other or not beating up much
on each other.
Speaker 4 (34:32):
Anything can happen at this point in time. There's no
guarantees the Arizona's going to win the Big Twelve, And
to be honest, odds are still that you probably won't
because I would say the same thing with Houston. If
you were gonna take Houston, are you gonna take Arizona
or are you gonna take the field Iowa State Iowa
was say, but every team can say that. Sure, the
(34:52):
Big Twelve is just loaded with talent. Yeah, Alabama, I've
seen them play a little bit they're they're good. I
don't know if they because they play into Arizona's hands.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
They played the same type of thing.
Speaker 4 (35:05):
Yes, up tempo, and so you're gonna have you're gonna
have games where you're gonna have your highs and lows.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
But sure it doesn't matter, right, But that's but that's
every game in March. Yeah, you know, every game in March.
He's gotta you gotta do this.
Speaker 4 (35:18):
What matters is being if you care about it, being
one of those top you know, one or two seeds
playing the right basketball come then of February.
Speaker 2 (35:28):
That's all that. Let me ask you, So you're you're
not a common fan. One's not a common fan because
you're in the business now, but common fan. And that's
who's saying all this, right, what what did? What are
they thinking about Arizona being number one common fan? Now?
Speaker 4 (35:43):
I think they believe they're gonna win the national title. Yeah,
to be honest, and oh everything. I had a friend
tell me who loves Arizona basketball. This was the day
after the Alburn game, okay or no, no, right before
the Auburn Okay, uh, he goes, oh they're gonn beat
Auburn and they're gonna go undefeated in the Big twelve.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
I said, well, hold on, Oh, was he being serious?
Speaker 12 (36:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (36:05):
He was.
Speaker 4 (36:06):
He said no, they're gonna go ondfeedd in the Big
Twelly said, no, they're not. The Big twelve is just
so like, come on, man, like, no, they're going to
go undefeeda this year.
Speaker 2 (36:15):
He sounds like you in other discussions with you, Me
Denver winning the title, who hit the super Bowl? Gonna happen.
It's gonna happen. No, But I think what you your example,
I think is maybe not to that extreme for common fan,
because okay, good for you. But and I could be
totally wrong. I hope people were listening, will send me
(36:36):
letters in April seventh, whenever the time and say Steve,
you're full of it. You've always been so full of it.
Blah blah blah. And I hope I'm wrong, because there's
no one benefits from their success more than me. You
got to call come here, okay, Hello, you're on the air,
nine on the ball.
Speaker 18 (36:49):
Who Heyboddy, it's Rick.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
How you doing Rick's well?
Speaker 3 (36:55):
I think let me turn this radio down.
Speaker 18 (36:57):
I didn't expect you to answer right away. I think
I said I think I sent you at Texas Weekend.
Maybe not. I think this is the best collective of
college basketball that I have seen in a very very
long time.
Speaker 2 (37:15):
Well, qualify that, Qualify that very very long time.
Speaker 18 (37:20):
I'm going all the way back to the eighty eight season,
eighty seven season when you and then they had Kansas
in eighty eight, tok won the titles, or no, they
won and excuse me, ninety.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
Nine eighty eight they were, right, Denny Manning. Then those
guys won in eighty eight.
Speaker 18 (37:40):
Yes, so when you but you look at the transition
of basketball, even the start of myer years, even when
Arizona one, Kentucky, Connecticut. You look at all these teams,
but I think the top ten teams, maybe even the
top twelve the chance of winning the national championship. And
(38:02):
I'll tell you why, because it's all going to come
down to the seating in the tournament of who plays who.
Speaker 2 (38:11):
And that's always the case, though I mean always the case.
Speaker 18 (38:14):
But well, I understand, I think and looking at everything
I've watched a lot of college basketball this year, I'm
not sure why, but happens to be that way. I
think Michigan right now is still the number one team.
I think Arizona is two or three. I've watched Michigan
a couple of times.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
That team.
Speaker 18 (38:36):
They are relentless, and I think the one thing that
really impressed me about Arizona if they can continue to
build on this is a three point shooting and if
they can get that with their inside game, then I
think they're the number one team. But I still think
the outside shooting and three point shooting is going to
(38:57):
really have to improve to the point point where they
can depend on it.
Speaker 2 (39:02):
A little bit more.
Speaker 18 (39:03):
I think this last game they were shooting them because
they had the luxury of being able to shoot them.
When you get into the tough games, are they going
to be able to shoot them when they really need
to shoot them? And that's going to be the real difference.
But I watched Michigan. Even Florida is still a good
team at Iowa State Connecticut. You just you look at
(39:27):
the top ten or twelve teams Bius nor Slouch and
I think this is great for college basketball.
Speaker 2 (39:35):
No, it's fun to watch, especially this time of year.
Thank you Rick for Collin. I can't remember in again
in recency biases and I covered the teams forever for
a long time in March in November, because back then
the season didn't start. Telling nowI right, and it's later
in the year, and you saw the good teams playing Mali.
Now they're playing each other early, they're not afraid to
(39:58):
lose early and see just see what they're doing. And
you're seeing a lot of those great games, which helps
us kind of determine who's good and who's not good.
And yeah, yeah, so that's the fun part of it. Yeah, no,
it's it's great.
Speaker 4 (40:10):
And you know, one thing I want to add, I
think the NIL has helped because now, unlike ten, ten,
fifteen years ago, you're seeing more players stay instead of
one and done, like oh Ye Grant and Jarrett Ye
who was one year at Arizona averaging I think a
point and a half or something like that, decided to go.
Speaker 2 (40:31):
You're not going to see that now.
Speaker 4 (40:32):
Now he might transfer, but you're seeing these players stick
around in college basketball. I don't think college basketball is
at the level that it used to be back in
the mid two thousands and early two thousands.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
Even preachers talent.
Speaker 4 (40:43):
In terms of talent, I don't because you had seniors
that were studs. You had teams like Florida that were
just stacked with the NBA guys. You just don't see
that collection stay together for as long a period of
time because if they are staying in college, they're probably
transferred to be the guy. But this is great for
college basketball, and I agree with I think it was
(41:04):
Rick Patino was saying it's the best it's been in
the last what like five six years, So I'll agree
with that. I just think if you look back fifteen
twenty years ago when you had seniors loaded teams, just
a different level.
Speaker 2 (41:17):
You're twenty two, you're twenty two, soon to be twenty three.
So the best team to you saw and you were
probably maybe ten.
Speaker 5 (41:26):
I'll say second, I do think that twenty fourteen team
is the best team I've seen.
Speaker 4 (41:32):
I think Johnson, right, yeah, Johnson and Aaron Gordon and
actually in those guys before you got hurt, I still
think that's a better defensive team, especially better in transition.
Speaker 5 (41:45):
I think they got out and had a focus on
forcing turnovers and then getting the ball up.
Speaker 2 (41:51):
To court real fast.
Speaker 5 (41:52):
So I think that's a that's a difference for me
between this year's team and twenty fourteen.
Speaker 2 (41:57):
So that's where my head's up.
Speaker 4 (42:00):
I think this is the third best team I've seen
in the last twenty plus years. Uh, next two fourteen,
I would put number two. I think that team was
the best defensive team. I think I've ever seen that, Arizona.
You could argue it's one of the best defensive teams.
Speaker 2 (42:14):
Oh, let me put some context here. How old are you? Yeah? Thirty? Okay,
let's start there. Okay, okay.
Speaker 4 (42:21):
Mine would be the sealem stot of my er leading
eight team that lost Ilinois. They kind of they only
a three seed, but they kept on getting better throughout
the year. Yet Shanning frying the pain Hasan Adams Mustafa
Schkor was the weak point and that's your weak point.
Speaker 2 (42:36):
Yeah, that's pretty good. Yeah, it's funny because you were
talking about seatings. I think you had ridden talked about seatings.
Arizona was a one. I think when they lost to Houston,
Houston was a four. Yeah, so as everyone they lost this, Well,
Houston didn't deserve to be a four. They should have
been a higher seed. If you're gonna win a national
title or get to the final four, doesn't really matter
who you're playing there. You being a number one seed
(42:57):
whether they're good or a good four or not a
good four, you're good enough to beat everybody.
Speaker 4 (43:01):
Yeah, just win, just just win days now, was that
Houston team understated?
Speaker 2 (43:05):
Yes, but just what eventually you're gonna have to play
them if you continue to move on or our team
like them.
Speaker 4 (43:11):
That result would have happened in the lead eight. Yes,
it would have. Yes, because that team was tough. Yes,
that's a tough Houston team.
Speaker 2 (43:18):
Right, And then we saw that a week before when
they had to play TCU, and it was like, holy crap.
Speaker 4 (43:22):
Right, And to be honest, look, I know TCU made
the tournament. I know they took Arizona another ring took
them out. That's a bad tc team. They were just
they were physically physical, physical. They also had nothing to lose. Yeah, yeah,
they wouldn't.
Speaker 2 (43:35):
I don't know. Bad they were in comparison to the
two teams. And it is what it is. So my time,
and I've been a lot older than you guys twice
your age two thousand and one to me is the
best talented team here at Arizona. I think that's no question. Ever,
the best team in Arizona basketball is eighty eight number two,
(43:55):
eighty eight with Kerr and the and Elliott and McMillan
and those guys, don't those guys ninety seven might finish
third or fourth might finish, And in ninety eight was
better than them.
Speaker 4 (44:07):
And see, I would say, I would say they were fourth.
We're going all the time. Yeah, yah, yeah, I would
say ninety four team was better than the ninety seven
team that lost to Arkansas.
Speaker 2 (44:15):
They're in the they're in the conversation. Ninety eight was
probably my third best team because they were the year
older than ninety seven. Ninety four is pretty damn good.
Speaker 11 (44:22):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (44:22):
And and the team that we lost to Illinois, well, no,
lost to Kansas in two thousand and three and four. Uh.
And then that Illinois team they played well, they were
playing well at the time. Illinois was a better team
and they happened to beat him in the last three
four minutes. And which just what it was, you know,
Channing and Salem and Hassan and and yeah, yeah, guess what.
(44:45):
It's how you play that day. And I'm sure my friends,
if they're listening, they understand what I say. You know,
it's how you play that day, no matter how good
you are. Explain to me Arizona's first round losses. How
do you explain those? It's how you play that day,
whether you're gonna play or not. One again, if you
play a five seven game series, as there was, gonna
lose to Prince then no, no, maybe maybe ninth that
one day. Yeah, was that day Santa Clara back in
(45:07):
the East Tennessee state, Yeah yeah, no, no, no question.
So it's how you played that day. On December eighth,
they're the best team in the country according to the
people who vote.
Speaker 4 (45:16):
Now, what it does help is again the city and
at the end of the season, they kept kind of
categorize what I wish and maybe I'm around here. Don't
they do only one like early bracket reveal where they
kind of show you where everybody is. They only do
it once.
Speaker 2 (45:32):
Yeah, it's about a month or so close. I was
part of that selection in Phoenix when they did a
mock thing. Yeah, yeah, I think so. I think it's
I would wish. I wish they would do it a
couple like multiple times. Leading Football, Yeah, kind of like
show you where you're at leading up just for entertainment purposes. Yeah. Yeah, Well,
it's funny because they talked about you asked me about
the weekend. We'll kind of shift gears here with the
(45:54):
with the college football playoffs, right, And the only thing
that I got out of that was people bitching about
thirteen fourteen, fifteen, sixteen teams, right, the other guys, and
we hear it all the time. It's the reason why
they went to sixty four teams and then sixty five,
sixty six, sixty seven. Bits about not getting in, Yep,
at some point there's a cutoff. Yeah, it is what
it is. If Notre Dame was pitching, I think you
(46:16):
don't lose those games? Are you're supposed to that you
were losing? Yeah, Or play a tougher schedule, yeah, joined
the conference. Yeah. Well yeah, that's another thing. And I
understand the crying and the outcry or whatever.
Speaker 4 (46:29):
But I'll say I'll say this, I don't agree with
Notre Dame sitting out of their bowl game. I think
it's petty and I think it's going to such a
standard that's going to ruin college football atone.
Speaker 2 (46:39):
But Alabama shouldn't have been in.
Speaker 4 (46:40):
You lose by twenty eight points, you're number nine, third
loss of the season. You shouldn't be in. And then
for the group of five schools. I know it's the rule.
I know you have to add them, but they have
no business being in this college football playoffs that It's
not like they're a group of five in that top
fifteen range. These teams were give me the top twenty five. Yeah,
(47:02):
So do I think Byus better? Do I think Texas better?
Do I think Notre Dame's better?
Speaker 2 (47:06):
Sure?
Speaker 4 (47:07):
Yeah, sure, but unfortunately the rule. Yeah, so that that's
my only thing.
Speaker 2 (47:12):
We're good Forget about five minutes left, yeah, sixpence. Okay,
anybody want to call and get into this conversation, please
do five to two zero four. One would like to
hear from you.
Speaker 4 (47:21):
And at the end of the day, do you like
everybody's complaining about the edges of this college football playoffs?
Do you really think anybody outside of the top five
is gonna win it this year?
Speaker 18 (47:31):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (47:32):
I would say, oh, miss has the best chance. Yeah,
And you know what on the inspiration alone, yep, yeah,
you know, I don't know. You guys remember the Michigan
situation when Freezer left and they hired Steve Fisher to
replace him, and guess what they did.
Speaker 2 (47:48):
They ran through it like a team one of that
they want to talk. Probably a lot had to do with,
you know, Steve Fisher being a decent coach, but inspiration,
let's prove that everybody wrong. And it's like the low
It's like when the do you just play it's unexplainable
and you played differently, right, that heart kind of steps up.
Speaker 4 (48:08):
My only thing with that, if they have their full
roster come playoff time, how many yeah, how many guys
are going to say I intend to enter the portal?
Speaker 2 (48:16):
How many guys are going to sit up? You just
don't know?
Speaker 5 (48:18):
Yeah, I mean another factor. Timp's losing their mind right now.
They think the world's and shambles with their football program.
But I still think they're in a good place because
a lot of people are leaving or just a quarterbacks,
just a couple of key players. But if you if
you really believe in you, if you really believe in
your program, and then you should be just fine.
Speaker 2 (48:39):
You went eight and four this year. That's a good season.
Speaker 4 (48:42):
And I'm gonna be honest, Cam's uh, what's the same,
Sam Lovett should give Cam's gotta be some of the
n I l because without him, he's not one of
the top quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (48:52):
Hello, you're on the air and eye of the ball.
Who's this? Give me some wisdom.
Speaker 19 (49:00):
I just want to tell you, man, enjoy it. Let
the fans enjoy number one, number one. I tell you now,
I know why you have five x wives, because when
the kids wanted stuff for you, when the kids wanted
stuff from Santa Claus, you told them there's no Fanta
Claus shut out.
Speaker 2 (49:20):
If if any of that was true, I believe you.
But none of that's true. I am a softy outside
of this studio, baby, right one, Oh.
Speaker 19 (49:30):
My god, just let me enjoy it for we might
use the Alabama and let me have one week of
number one.
Speaker 2 (49:37):
Okay, okay, well but you better hang up and turn
off the radio.
Speaker 3 (49:44):
I can't do that. I gotta got it.
Speaker 2 (49:46):
So you've been around for a long time. The best
team in the last few years, tell.
Speaker 3 (49:50):
Me, yeah, I'm gonna agree with you. It was the
two thousand and one and then the eighty nine team.
Speaker 19 (49:56):
Eighty eight, eighty eight, eighty nine.
Speaker 3 (49:59):
That eighty nineteen was amazing.
Speaker 2 (50:01):
There were there were Number one. Shun was the senior
of that year.
Speaker 19 (50:04):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, And that was just I mean, song
was on top of the world.
Speaker 3 (50:10):
It was. That was that was pretty darn excite, and.
Speaker 2 (50:13):
That that time yeah until.
Speaker 19 (50:18):
Yeah, exactly exactly. And but but that two thousand and
one team, if if Gil and Luke and everybody else
don't get hurt and the phantom call on on Jason Gardner,
that was something to behold.
Speaker 2 (50:35):
Man, Well, you have the cluck a stick and you
have five days when you're at Little Mexico, have a
little you know, you know, a shot or two and
say hey, I'm still number one.
Speaker 3 (50:48):
Okay, okay, we'll see you guys. Take care.
Speaker 2 (50:51):
He's right though, I'm not trying to poop poo us.
I'm just not I'm just trying to be realistic about
the situation because I'm not. I mean, you know, I
posted right away one, so you know I already had
the list going and ready to go, and then my
two T shirts from back in the day. So like
I said, I'm not trying to do No. One benefits
from their success more than me. I have been able
to write some books and do this job. And because
(51:12):
they've been successful, and.
Speaker 4 (51:14):
You have to says for Tommy, even if he doesn't
care about number one, recruiting wise, this is just gonna
help recruiting.
Speaker 2 (51:21):
Yeah, it doesn't hurt. Yeah, it doesn't hurt because has
been established, right, they are who they are and people
knowing that they're good. This kind of just puts a
little cherry on the top. And because they're going after
the international players, I guess there's one that has to
make a decision right.
Speaker 4 (51:37):
Here that that visited Arizona and uh what was that Illinois?
Speaker 2 (51:40):
That's right? Yeah, So, I mean, his his plan continues.
The one thing that we were talking about before, he's
got his players now, not Sean's players, not any bs
about he wouldn't be doing.
Speaker 4 (51:51):
He's pretty good at what he's doing, better than the
previous guy. I know, the previous I know Sean has
three elite eates and that's where people are like, well.
Speaker 2 (52:00):
Sean got here, give them are they comparing? Yeah, well
you've only had four years. Yeah, And I'm not trying
to defend to him because he doesn't need any dude,
just a different style, different style, and the kids like
playing that style.
Speaker 4 (52:12):
And you're you're developing guys. Sean was putting guys in
the NBA. But if you if you don't really ask yourself,
did they get better?
Speaker 2 (52:19):
A lot of them were already NBA ready Yeah, Okay,
are we good? Okay, Super let's go.
