Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera on
Fox Sports fourteenth fifth Day, powered by Nova Insurance Services
ensure your most Prized possessed.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Yets ay, Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to Iron the Ball
here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera in
today with me is my Tuesday guy, Dave Silver Tuesday
Man is back Tuesday. It seems like I just saw you,
or at least I was on the show yesterday last Tuesday.
Another running in the show. So anybody who can help us,
(00:33):
please do. There's an encouraging start. You never know, but
we're on. So we're good. We're good, good, good. Today
we're gonna have Brad Alice from the Weldcat Sports Report
about three fifteen. Gotta get him out at three thirty,
and then we're gonna have coach Joan bond Vaccini. I
haven't talked to her in a while since Ala brew
ha ha from last year.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
I think I was on one of the shows when
she was when she appeared, so yeah, it's always good
to catch up that she's always doing the broadcast now
for the games.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, it was probably lest year when they were going
through the dea Barnes.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
No, I think yeah, either that or maybe post after
Becky had just been hired. Yeah, one of those things. Yeah,
kind of how to know, how do you build a
program from scratch?
Speaker 5 (01:12):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:12):
And well, guess what, I'm gonna ask you that question
again because there's a lot of a lot of scratch
going on in terms of they have long ways to go. Yeah,
so it.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
Looks like I guess they've had a couple of losses
after getting off to some good wins to start the season,
but the last two games haven't gone to No. No,
have you seen them at all? I mean I've seen
him on TV. Have you seen them in person?
Speaker 2 (01:30):
No? No, but I did see him on TV. That's
why I asked. I saw them against New Mexico the
last quarter and a half, and they didn't look too bad.
I know. It's like when you go to the restaurant
it wasn't bad. You know, when you eat something and
it wasn't bad, Well, that means it wasn't really good. Yeah,
So I don't know. It's hard to judge them, but
they played hard. They played hard, and they had a chance. Uh,
(01:50):
they just didn't didn't win.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
Yeah, you know, I don't think anybody's surprised, and I think,
you know, it's gonna be interesting to see what I
get into the into the conference kind of how they
stack up with others. You know, it's a huge conference,
and there's teams I'm sure maybe kind of in the
same boat as them. Yeah, we'll see if they can
just kind of, you know, kind of keep it floating
here the first year. And from what we're reading, you know,
she's getting some good players to come in in the future.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Yeah, which is, of course that's how I doa did
it good players to become a good coach and then
take your chances with some luck. And so here we are,
so we'll get to that. We'll get about get out
of here about eight minutes and then get ahead of
hold the brad about three fifteen. Okay, so here we
are going to San Diego. In fact, I need to
(02:32):
check about credentials. I haven't even checked about credentials yet.
Speaker 6 (02:35):
Are they even doing that yet?
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah? Do what right away? I'm kind of late to
the table because I finally made the decision that I'm
going to go for a day or two.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
So I was at both of the Arizona games there
and then you know, if you want to really date me,
I was at the very first Holiday Bowl. I was
in college in Sandy Well, was it what seventy eight?
Maybe The thing I remember most of those first couple
of years was number one BYU was there, which is
a big draw in the San Diego area. Yeah, and
(03:06):
Navy I think may have played the first game, which
is huge, or one of the first two games, I think,
And that's also obviously you know, the great connection there.
But I mean that Bowl started off hot even that
back then. Yeah, you know, there's always some good games
over over the years, a lot of BYU wins. You know,
Jim McMahon and like Steve Young and some of those
quarterbacks in that era were part of it.
Speaker 6 (03:26):
So it continues to be. I mean.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
The only thing that's kind of weird, and I'm sure
you've talked about it, is just the date. The date
being after January first, kind of stuck in between the
playoff games.
Speaker 6 (03:37):
So I don't know, it'll get some attention. I guess
it'll just maybe be the only game of the night.
So that's good.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Yeah, genuinely, it's a it's a bad time because we
were trying to get our logistics done and we got
to leave either New Year's date and we miss all
the good games, or leave the day of the game
early and get to the game, and then I hope
there's no traffic, cor probably no accidents, and you know
there's gonna be a lot of traffic with people going
and then come right back. So and then you're in
(04:03):
San Diego. I said, why can't we just stand another day?
And then you get the hotel bill, I know, especially
for a company that's not paid for it.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
You know, Yeah, I mean it's gonna be I'm sure
there's gonna be a lot of UFA fans, Oh, no question,
doubt about it from here from California. But you're right.
We looked at things too, like do we fly? Do
we drive to even go?
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Do you mean now?
Speaker 4 (04:24):
Yeah, I mean kind of just who's the week you
and yeah, you know every a couple of my friends
they were there, they were thinking of going. You know,
it's I don't know, it's an expense.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Really no, well so you might or you don't know.
You I don't think we're gonna go. Okay, No, see
that's the issue.
Speaker 7 (04:39):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
And then we joked about this last week after they
beat the issue maybe even this week. How this team
is the probably the best team no one's actually seen.
Speaker 6 (04:48):
Well, you mean, because no one's going to the games here?
Speaker 2 (04:50):
When when they're gonna go there, I think you know
they'll have people from out there. Obviously, people from here
will travel, not not a whole lot, but many, many
or some will, so they'll have a good following. I
think it's you've been to the stadium. I'm sure you
know I have not. Oh no, it's a new stadium. Yeah,
well we were there for the Arizona opening day thing.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
I hate to admit I have not been to my
Alma Maters stadium as.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Long as as long as it's not one hundred and
it won't be like that day it was scorching in
San Diego, unusually scorching. Yeah, it'll be like seventy five, right.
Speaker 6 (05:23):
It should be good.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
I mean I think one of those Arizona Holiday Bowl games,
it was a little nippy. I remember, Yeah, well it
was the same round the same time, like late.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
December, Arizona, Arizona. Did you go into that one, right?
And when stoops went? I think yeah, it was it
raining or it was it was raining and cold, h yeah, yeah.
And then Arizona played like crap beat badly.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
But I think again, you know, going back to what
I used to do, and we were out there doing
live reports outside the stadium before the game, and then
he had to meander away back in and by the
time I sat down in my chair, fourteen zero, I
think it was twenty one to nothing.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Yeah, they were losing. There was a donek and Sue
I think, yeah, he was huge on the on the
line there.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
Yeah, I mean there was not a good team too,
with with Foles and stuff.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
So yeah, here's the issue with Bowl games, especially like
these and maybe the fist stuff back in the day.
There are teams that don't want to play. You know,
there's actually these teams that don't want to go, so
they don't like that, you know, the Notre Dames and
the other ones that are not going to go. But
there are people or teams that go and just we're
here just to have fun and get the gifts and whatever.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
I mean, you know, before it used to be you
to hear about players opting out of these Bowl games
that I was just like, oh, Kansas State and I
alway stay done.
Speaker 6 (06:36):
They just don't want to go.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
Yeah, and there's a bunch of them though, Yeah, and
they're getting fined fifty thought.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Yeah, well yeah, but uh, I think there was a
bunch of them, not just those two in Notre Dame. Right,
there's been a few of them. I haven't really paid
attention to how many because it doesn't affect their songs.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
They I don't know, I don't know. We could spend
you know, trying to figure out how to fix that.
I don't know if it's possible at this point to
even come up with a really good idea other than
expanding the playoff and make it even bigger.
Speaker 6 (07:08):
But you know they're going to do that already.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Yeah, as it should. But guess what when they go
to sixteen teams, Yeah, seventeen eighteen nineteen, are going to
bitch that they didn't get in. It's just the way
it is. They can play when they're sixty four teams.
So they went sixty five, sixty six to sixty.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Eight and now now who knows what's next, but I
think that's probably what's going to have to happen, because
it's just making these especially the championship games, are kind
of insignificant. It seems like these days, I don't know,
if that's going to change, you know what the players
with the players think or what the schools think about
you know, their bowls. But I don't know, it's hard.
(07:44):
It's hard to justify sometimes. I can't imagine just not
taking your team. It seems weird, like, wait a second,
we haven't even said told our seniors, hey, you know what,
that was your last game, not this next game. We
figured we're going to go to when you're a Notre
Dame or all these teams were Bowl.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Eligi and and depends on the circumstances of each team
and each individual, right if they're gonna have an NFL
chance or or not going to have fun, because that's
a lot of it. You know, the practices aren't as
tough as they were during the regular season because it's
more of a more of a benefit, more of a
an reward, that's the word.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
And then the you know, their coaches have left, so
they feel kind of abandoned by that, and you know
there's a lot of that drama behind the scenes. I'm
sure cause these issues, but it's just kind of weird
that again, like we were saying it, you know, used
to be you know, they maybe three or four guys
opt out because I know they're gonna get drafted.
Speaker 6 (08:34):
They don't want to get hurt.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Well, who was it last year when the Georgia Georgia
beat somebody? Or was it Georgia who beat somebody bad?
Or maybe they got beat and the other Florida state
right they It was horrible. It was a horrible game
because everybody opted out. Yeah, leve Yeah, Okay, we're gonna
take a break here real quick, get a hold of

Speaker 2 (14:14):
Yeah we can take against Yes, here we go, Here
we go, brad Is Shue. That's how are you? I'm good, good,
good to Thanks for coming on and we want to
talk a little about hoops, a little about football in
your time. Uh, what are your thoughts on the football
(14:34):
team headed to San Diego?
Speaker 5 (14:38):
You know, obviously it's I think a better than expected season.
You know, they've played very well down the stretch, they
have found ways to win football games. I think. You know,
obviously the Holiday Ball comes with mixed emotions because you.
Speaker 13 (14:53):
Have the one of the greatest nights in areas out.
Speaker 5 (14:56):
Of history, and against that same Nebraska team a few
years later as of the toughest ones.
Speaker 13 (15:01):
Yeah, but it will be interesting.
Speaker 5 (15:03):
And you know, SMU, it's a team they haven't played
since I was in grade school, so to be a
fun new kind of matchup, which has been part of
this whole Big Twelve experience seeing teams you haven't seen
in decades or ever. So I think it'll be fun,
good experience. In fact, they're playing on January second is
kind of cool as well.
Speaker 6 (15:22):
What do you think the difference was? You know, why
did this team?
Speaker 4 (15:25):
I mean such a big change from what four wins
to nine wins just like that.
Speaker 6 (15:29):
I mean, what do you what do you think happened?
Speaker 13 (15:32):
I think it's a combination of things.
Speaker 5 (15:34):
Obviously, I think you upgraded severely at offensive coordinator. I think,
you know, as much as we all like Dino Babers,
I still to this day don't know what that offense
was supposed to be.
Speaker 13 (15:50):
You know, it wasn't pro style.
Speaker 5 (15:52):
It wasn't spread.
Speaker 13 (15:54):
It was just kind of bizarre. Uh.
Speaker 5 (15:56):
You combine that with a defense that was banged up.
I think Dwayne Nikina did a good job at times,
but when things went downhill, it really really went downhill,
and that was that was problematic.
Speaker 11 (16:10):
You know.
Speaker 5 (16:10):
You combine that, then with a full year to prepare
to be the head coach. I think Brent Brennan made
some changes in both personality. Obviously you had time to
evaluate the roster better as opposed to just trying to
hang on whoever you could hang on to. And some
of their acquisitions, you know, they kind of made some
interesting moves going to a lot of FCS teams, guys
(16:33):
who played big roles at small schools, and a lot
of those guys translated. But I think overall it was
an upgrade of the coaching staff, upgrade of the roster,
and kind of Brent Brennan transforming himself.
Speaker 11 (16:45):
A little bit.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
Yeah, yeah, no, definitely transformed himself. In fact, we had
him yesterday and I was thinking about thinking about this,
and I just came up came up to me thinking
about this, and maybe I'll ask you and Dave, do
you think last year had to happen for this year
to happen, and I say that, you know, got to
hitch punch the face, you have no answers, and then
all of a sudden a year later, the good fortune
hits you.
Speaker 13 (17:09):
I don't know if it had to have happened, but yeah,
I mean in some.
Speaker 5 (17:14):
Ways, I always joked with the greatest what if in
history is if the refs had gotten Bobby Wade's foot
and bounds on the putt return against USC because it
probably prolongs the Macovic era of high three or four years.
Speaker 13 (17:27):
So maybe you had to hit rock bottoms to bounce
back up.
Speaker 5 (17:29):
Because who knows, you win six games, you feel okay
about yourself, you're a little bit reluctant to make some changes.
And this year I think it was a you know,
everything from how Brent Brennan presents himself on social media.
Speaker 13 (17:44):
You know, he took a little bit of.
Speaker 5 (17:45):
A page out of the fish playbook too.
Speaker 13 (17:49):
You know, everyone was like, oh, you know, my wife commented,
look how much emotion he shows. You remember the last
year everyone want to say you didn't show an up emotion.
So yeah, maybe it had to have happened or to
make catch a dramatic.
Speaker 5 (18:02):
Transformation, and in the end, I think it was the
difference of three coaches.
Speaker 13 (18:06):
But you know, I think they let some guys.
Speaker 5 (18:08):
Walk who were immensely talented but maybe just didn't fit anymore.
You know, I look at you know, Jacob Manu for instance.
I mean, he's a year leading tackler when he was healthy.
And the defense is better without a really good player.
So you know, audition by subtraction, and yeah, I think
there was some soul searching that had to have happened.
Speaker 14 (18:31):
And it did.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
You know that being said, maybe we don't get like
sixty new players to come to Tucson this time around.
I mean, how do you think he's going to rebuild
this roster again?
Speaker 5 (18:44):
I think it'll be interesting to see who leaves, who
doesn't leave. You know, what can you attract? Obviously they're
bringing in a very talent on paper recruiting class. You know,
you're not hearing a lot of names go on the transferporter,
although one of the the lightmen who played a lot
wooton I think announced state he is. You know, you've
(19:07):
got to figure out what your nil budget looks like.
You know, first and foremost, you got to ensure that
Noah for Fida comes back, and if he comes back.
Speaker 13 (19:15):
And I don't see why he wouldn't with.
Speaker 5 (19:17):
His brother coming to play with.
Speaker 13 (19:20):
You know a lot of people talk about Levitt and.
Speaker 5 (19:22):
I'll love it's just chasing money. Well, dor forra Fida
comes back for his final year, he sets himself up
to be successful, to sonin for the rest of his life,
to be a member of the community. And you know,
we've seen it a little bit more in in basketball
than football.
Speaker 1 (19:42):
But when you're in, you're in, and.
Speaker 5 (19:45):
You know you can whether whether he wants to open
a restaurant, sell insurance, go get his law degree. You know,
does he want to be the next Corey Williams, Matt Mulebos,
Glenn Howell. I mean, you know, you go down the
list and you you you bleed the red and blue.
Speaker 13 (19:59):
You have a place in this community and.
Speaker 5 (20:01):
That can whether he plays a minute of pro ball
or not. Nor Fafida will be a beloved figure here
and he's already turned that financially. You doing the commercials
and doing nil what I feel.
Speaker 13 (20:12):
Is the right way, really using his name, image and likeness.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
To promote things.
Speaker 5 (20:17):
So yeah, I think I think it starts with him
because he stays, guys will follow them.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
That's why I think that I think he's got some
coaching in him in the future, because if you can
convince guys to stay, you have that personality, you can
convince guys to come here. And you look what I did,
Look what I helped do, Look at what Look what
I helped to start. And I'm sure he's got a
huge IQ to be that, to be that guy. It's like,
(20:43):
this may be a weird comparison. I just popped into
my head the TJ. McConnell of the football program.
Speaker 5 (20:50):
Yeah, and it's crazy if you look at the track
record of Arizona quarterbacks, how many of them are involved
in coaching. Willie Twey Thomas high school football coach Keith
Smith has been.
Speaker 13 (21:01):
A high school football coach.
Speaker 5 (21:02):
He's now one of those QB coaches. Ironically enough, two
of the least distinguished from passing.
Speaker 13 (21:08):
Ronald Diel and George Malaulu.
Speaker 5 (21:10):
Are quarterback gurus, so it is kind of ingrained.
Speaker 13 (21:15):
In that position. If Nick Foles wants to coach.
Speaker 7 (21:16):
He can.
Speaker 5 (21:17):
He probably doesn't need the money. But yeah, I think
if Noah wants to be a coach, great, If Noah
wants to again, go go sell insurance. Great, Go open
a Polynesian restaurant, great, go go go buy out sim
Klenkskar Dealership.
Speaker 13 (21:33):
Great. You know, whatever he wants to do.
Speaker 5 (21:35):
I think he'll be successful because he is a leader,
He is very intelligent.
Speaker 13 (21:41):
He comes from this.
Speaker 5 (21:43):
Very supportive family, and he's branded himself very well. He's
been very shrewd and how he has branded himself to
the Tucson community.
Speaker 6 (21:56):
Yeah, he's done a good job.
Speaker 4 (21:57):
To see him doing those what Tucson Airport commercials and
things like that, So I mean he's he's.
Speaker 13 (22:01):
Out there and he looks good on the haircuts.
Speaker 5 (22:03):
Yeah, you know, and again those opportunities aren't there for
again and some.
Speaker 13 (22:10):
Of it's unique to Tucson, you know, I know, you know,
you're not You're.
Speaker 5 (22:13):
Not probably getting those deals in Phoenix because the Cardinals
are going to get him where the Sons are going
to get them.
Speaker 13 (22:19):
So congratulations in North Fafida.
Speaker 5 (22:21):
You you you picked the college town and you've won
the hearts and minds over. I mean, he's right now
in the same breath with you know, with the best
quarterbacks of all time, and another good year next year
and maybe he becomes.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
One of the more.
Speaker 5 (22:37):
Beloved football players in school history, along with you know, ironically,
guys who are still around the program, Teddy Brusky, Chuck Cecil,
Ricky Huntley. You know, I think the only one who's
not really around more often is Gronk, and he's maybe
the only offensive player on that list too, But you're.
Speaker 13 (22:57):
In that rarefied air.
Speaker 5 (22:58):
I think another good comparison, really, and your O'Connor was
not bad. I think it's Jason Gardner, Whereas you have
a guy who excelled at his positions, probably too small
for the NFL, is going into all the record books,
is going to be a winner. And again, like Jason,
if he wants to coach, he can coach. Jason maybe
(23:19):
didn't didn't have those opportunities, but could you imagine.
Speaker 13 (23:22):
How many commercials he and Gilbert would have done in their.
Speaker 5 (23:24):
Two years together or his senior year, how many commercials
Jason would have done.
Speaker 13 (23:30):
So I think there are some comparisons there as well.
Speaker 5 (23:32):
He might be the you know, he won't have the
pro career, assuming unless he's you know, Bucks, the trend
of five tot eight quarterbacks, but he's not gonna be
Gronk He's not gonna be Teddy Burski, but he has
a unique place among this community and for football fans.
Speaker 4 (23:48):
You know, in the old days, it used to be
a really important little practice situation that they would get
because I got to you know, have I don't know,
a couple more weeks of practice.
Speaker 6 (23:57):
How do you think you know?
Speaker 4 (23:58):
The Brennan and never everybody are looking at that little
window here that that's approaching.
Speaker 13 (24:04):
I think it's an.
Speaker 5 (24:05):
Evaluation period now in many ways, it's like another spring training.
It's another spring camp. I think it's a chance to
sell younger guys on their role for the future because
you have to re recruit half this.
Speaker 13 (24:21):
If not three quarters of this roster. So I think you.
Speaker 5 (24:25):
Spend part of that camp obviously preparing for SMU, but
part of it is, you know, are you are you
replacing a senior here? You know, who's the next Genesis
Smith in Dalton Johnson? Are they on the roster or
do you need to go out and go get a
guy from another school? And I think that's what you
do with it, and it just makes you better as
a program. You know, more time on the field is
(24:47):
always better, especially when you are somewhat limited in what
guys can do each week.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
So for a guy who covered recruiting for a long
time in your old life and you know how much
I hate recruiting. Are the kids today chasing time, playing
time or nil money?
Speaker 13 (25:07):
I think it's a combination.
Speaker 5 (25:08):
I mean, obviously, if you're at the you're at the
top of the heat.
Speaker 13 (25:12):
I think where nil really changes things.
Speaker 5 (25:15):
Is you might like Athens, Georgia better than Tesco Lusa, Alabama,
but if they're giving you thirty grand more, the difference
is minimal. But I think for some guys it's a
chance to make some money. And you know, obviously, if
you're the third four star on Arizona's recruiting class, you're
(25:37):
probably making more than you are because if you're that guy,
you're the fourteenth player off USC. But for some guys
who are looking for playing time so they can spin
it to another school, and for other guys, they have
their eyes on the NFL. And I think every kid
is you need. And I think you know that was
always the challenge in recruiting before was how do you
(25:57):
recruit what's important to a kid? And now you add
an added financial dan and do you roll the dice
on a kid, you know, is for less lack of
a better word of mercenary, knowing you might lose him
in two years, but you might get two really good years.
Speaker 13 (26:13):
Out of them.
Speaker 6 (26:15):
Yeah, they've been pretty good.
Speaker 4 (26:17):
I mean, like you said right off the top of
the conversation, I mean you got to give Brendan some
credit that you know, this group really paid off. Yeah,
that's maybe not the right.
Speaker 2 (26:27):
Nothing not to say and not to say will pay
off again. I mean lightning in a bottle and I
don't want to poo poo it, but it was and
maybe they go after the same type of players and
it works again. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (26:38):
Yeah, I mean I think you have to find your niche.
Speaker 15 (26:41):
You know.
Speaker 13 (26:41):
For for Dicktomy, he was.
Speaker 5 (26:43):
A brilliant evaluator of junior college talent and uh, you
know he opened that Polynesian door, you know. For for
Mike Stoops, it was go into Texas, get guys who
maybe can't get into Texas but you know our they
think they're better than Oklahoma State or Texas Tech at
the time. I mean, no disrespect text on top right now.
Speaker 13 (27:06):
You know each coach you know, right now, Tommy recruits
differently than Luke.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
Did you know, Tommy has the international thing, and you
know Luke was a brilliant evaluator of how transfers would
fit in the program.
Speaker 13 (27:19):
So I think my.
Speaker 5 (27:19):
Guess is Brennan has his thing, and it's fine guys
who are big programs who couldn't quite crack the one
deep or the two deep, and then fine guys at
smaller schools who either excelled or showed flashes, who want
to move up and prove themselves. And I think that's kind.
Speaker 13 (27:41):
Of where you're at.
Speaker 5 (27:43):
And you know, they went to some weird places McNeese
State and what was it, Northwestern as the southern Northwestern.
You know, it wasn't like they were just going to
Montana or South Dakota State, who everyone goes to. They
were going to some interesting places to find players.
Speaker 13 (27:58):
And you kind of have to it are lost questions.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
I know, you got to go to the hoops team,
the best team in the country right now.
Speaker 5 (28:07):
They're as good as anyone. I mean, it's what December ninth,
whether you think of Sam or Michigan or Duke or
Iowa Staith, those are the four that have had the
best season so far, you know, But it's Gonzagas significantly worse. No,
I mean they're as good as anyone in the country.
That's all you can hope for. And I think their
(28:29):
style of play is built for March because if you
can score in the paint, it doesn't matter what that
backdrop looks like.
Speaker 13 (28:37):
You know, we Stephen.
Speaker 5 (28:39):
Every big Arizona loss deep of the tournament has usually
come when one of their stars shoot from the outside,
whether it was Steve Kerr against Oklahoma, Jason Gardner, Man,
you bang it inside with Coed Pete. I mean, the
rebounding defense and post scoring typically travel with the good guard,
(29:00):
with a good guard margin with a great guard, you know.
I mean people aren't giving him enough credit, and they
give him a ton of credit. He is, you know,
he is the best point guard now since McConnell. Right, yeah, yeah,
it's been a while, so.
Speaker 2 (29:15):
Right a point guard year. You're right, because you used
to turn them out all the time. Brad, thanks a
bunch for joining us. Have a good day anytime you're talking.
All right, Yeah? Thanks? That was Brad Alice from the
WILDCD Sports Report.
Speaker 12 (29:26):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (29:26):
Yeah, there's a lot of things going on. I agree
with him on football. On football, we'll see what happens
with that as we move forward in terms of the future,
the future, the future, well, you know how it is historically,
and you've been here longer than me, Dave, they rarely
capitalize on success, at least long term. Maybe they do
in a year or two, and then it just all
of a sudden falls apart. Yeah, whether for whatever reason,
(29:50):
it's just otherwise we'd be talking about success, the sex success,
you know, all this all this time.
Speaker 4 (29:54):
I mean, you know, just look, really the last what
five years, Jed Fish has a big season, in the
next year they fall part, and now they're back to
another good season. You know, can they can they match
that next year? But you know, it sounds it looks like,
you know, things are kind of in place. If things
go as Brad was talking about, just the type of
player he's recruiting, you know, continue that trend. Coach them
(30:16):
up and see what the Big twelve looks like. It's
it's a different conference than when we're.
Speaker 2 (30:21):
Yeah, and you said the key phrase, coach them up.
I think, I think, and I don't know because he's
here second year, but he did this at San Jose
State where he didn't have the best players, right, But
he coached them up to become better contenders or at
least better players. Tommy does that often, and we'll see
if he can, because that's the important part. I don't
think rich trod did that enough because he would have
(30:44):
been more sustainable, if that makes any sense. Yeah, but
I think that the Brendan probably can do that.
Speaker 4 (30:50):
I think, you know, it's a big deal for these
guys to come from a small stage in our Southwestern
whatever he was talking about, some of these smaller schools,
and all of a sudden or in the spotlight, you know,
in a big twelve game.
Speaker 2 (31:02):
Yeah, it's a big deal. All you need is at
an opportunity, Yeah, opportunity.
Speaker 4 (31:06):
And you know some of these guys again, I'm sure
you were the same way. Where it's like in the
first couple of games, we're like looking at our rosters, going,
who are these guys? Where'd they come from? Oh, they're
in their third their their third university.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
And guess what. That's going to be the case for
a long time until they changed things.
Speaker 4 (31:22):
I think when somebody I maybe maybe I mistook what
they were saying, but I thought I heard in the
broadcast this year the guy was like a sixty year
freshman or something.
Speaker 2 (31:30):
Like that on some other place.
Speaker 4 (31:32):
I mean he's just you know, he red shirt, he said,
out a year whatever, he came back. So I mean
there's there's that kind of stuff going on in that sport.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
Well, look at Pavia from Dinderbilt now from New Mexico Albuquerque,
and he went to New mexicool stated had a very
junior college. I think, y yeah, And then you know
he's selling me a thirty year old playing wither be
a documentary like the Who's the Guy from Philadelphia? Back
in the day for Vermeal, they had the short story
on him. It was a walk on guy. He was
an older dude. Yeah, that's any age now. And now
(32:02):
he's a Heisman Trophy He's right. I realized that now.
And he's kind of the second favorite, which is amazing.
Some dude from Albuqurique and Vanderbilt in America, baby, only
in America.
Speaker 6 (32:13):
I mean, wait a second.
Speaker 4 (32:14):
I mean some of these schools you're thinking about, wait
a second.
Speaker 6 (32:17):
Even play football?
Speaker 2 (32:18):
Right?
Speaker 6 (32:18):
Do they usually win like two or three games a season?
Speaker 2 (32:20):
And that that program too is doing really well football
and basketball.
Speaker 6 (32:24):
And you wonder is that an nil thing?
Speaker 2 (32:27):
You just do have money. They do have money. Great university.
They get smart people too. Yes, I'm glad that that
Brad didn't talk about feet up becoming a radio sports
talk show. Oh no, you could easily do that if you.
Maybe we can audition him sometimes I'll be while he
pipped at an art feat I have him.
Speaker 6 (32:48):
Couldn't just talk right rather than the interview?
Speaker 2 (32:51):
Maybe? Yeah, well, if he would be interesting and come
in for for an hour or so. Okay, let's take
a break here, come back on the other side and
just shoot the breeze.

Hey, welcome back to I on the Ball here on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera, you're Dave Silver.
Good to talk to Brad what's going on to another
guy's opinion of what's going on.
Speaker 6 (36:48):
And it's a good time to be covering Arizona sports,
that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
Yeah, it wasn't the last week a fantastic week for
that purpose. I mean, come on, we've talked about this before.
I think Dave, you and I and all have with
other guest hosts. The mid nineties. The mid nineties were
a pretty fantastic time for u of a basketball football.
There's warm era. Baseball I think was doing very well
with Andy I think maybe not was it was it.
Speaker 6 (37:13):
Still kind of hit. I don't know if he was
still there yet.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
It was probably a coach might have still been.
Speaker 4 (37:19):
Kendled through the early nineties and then Jerry Stitt and
then Lopez came in.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
Yeah, so this these are good times. This is well,
this is when liven Goode was in. Well, it's a
great day to be a whole great day to be well.
Speaker 6 (37:32):
Yeah, right, it's pretty fun.
Speaker 4 (37:34):
I mean, they're obviously number one in basketball for those
of you who keep track of the Joel and Already bracket.
Speaker 6 (37:41):
I think it's out today. So there's you know, of
course Arizona's number one.
Speaker 4 (37:45):
Number one in the West, playing Vermont in San Diego
in the San Jose Regional, so it'd all be West coast.
Speaker 2 (37:52):
Yeah, if that's the way it plays out, right, we'll
see what happens. And sometimes many times that hasn't worked
out well. No, staying in the West now it starts
out badly, right, Yeah, they've had losses in the West
many times. Everywhere and everyone's always good. You have a crowd,
it means nothing. It means nothing. Historically it meant nothing. Yeah,
(38:13):
you have to go to the Southeast region to get
through here, Birmingham and Memphis and all that to get
to Indianapolis. And guess where the final forest. I think
it's at Indianapolis this year, twenty eight years later, twenty
right again?
Speaker 3 (38:28):
Right back?
Speaker 11 (38:29):
Is it?
Speaker 2 (38:30):
Yeah? It is right?
Speaker 6 (38:31):
Is it pretty sure?
Speaker 8 (38:31):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (38:32):
Yeah, Indy? So what's the this is going to be
twenty six, twenty nine years and twenty nine years Yeah,
twenty nine years ago, long time ago.
Speaker 6 (38:41):
Doesn't seem like that long ago. We were young kids.
Speaker 2 (38:44):
The guys are now fifty years old. That's the scary thing.
Miles and an hour from fifty years old.
Speaker 6 (38:49):
That's hard to believe. That's really hard to believe.
Speaker 2 (38:54):
I think I don't even know how he's doing.
Speaker 6 (38:55):
Anything same birthday, right him and Bennetteta.
Speaker 2 (38:58):
I don't know. I think that's interesting, believe so age
do you know? Maybe you can google it if you
have it, I have it here. But how un LB
is doing and the Sacramento State two of the U
of A guys on that final fourteen Yeah, josh In Vegas.
I don't think he's doing very well. And I think
that bibi is he's got a winning record, but I'm
not sure how oh good that is for years. It's
(39:21):
always tough for that first year. So we'll see. Anybody
want to call please do in four and five overall
for Joshua, and he's had some bad losses at least
perception wise in terms of schools, because I think the
first two or three games were not good.
Speaker 6 (39:36):
Loss lost to Maryland. They did beat Stanford.
Speaker 2 (39:40):
Okay, Uh, I don't know. Yeah, I think early on
the lost games.
Speaker 4 (39:45):
It's gonna take time, its gonna take make a coaching change.
And that's a big it's a big job. It used
to be such a huge position. And it's just kind
of they were. They were a program. They were nil
before n I L was in IL.
Speaker 6 (39:56):
There was nil there. I'm sure.
Speaker 2 (39:59):
Did you see the coach from LSU back in the
Origonona Oh he made talking about that back day. You
go through the back door. Now you just go through
the front door. You know, everyone's admitting to what they
shouldn't be admitting to. Yeah, but it is what it is.
Anybody want to call five two zero for one? Six,
seventy four or forty we'll take your call. Talk about
you a football game, you a basketball team, women's basketball,
(40:22):
whatever you guys want to talk about. Are you going
to the game in San Diego? You gonna make it
a one day, two day. It's a great place to
spend some time, right, But again, then the hotel bill
comes in and gas is nothing, Gas is nothing.
Speaker 6 (40:34):
Gas isn't that big deal. But you know, you're to me,
it's a Friday night game, so it's gonna do the
whole I think.
Speaker 2 (40:41):
So, yeah, you're right, you know, I mean, there's your
three day weekend. Yeah, it could be you go through. Well,
Thursday is the school kids are still out of school.
Speaker 4 (40:48):
I probably don't even go back into Monday anyway. So
I'm sure that's gonna be okay, honey, let's go.
Speaker 6 (40:53):
We can do it.
Speaker 2 (40:54):
Right. Well, it's the Arizona Bowl game. I think they
just put some stuff out. It's going to be coaster
in the A they're hoping. I think, how can they
predict the fifteen day whatever those things? You know, and
you know all he's got the he says it's gonna
be seventy one in August at this time of year
and maybe if it is void's rain, it's going to
be nice. Should be nice.
Speaker 4 (41:15):
Yeah, I mean they've they've done a really good job
of keeping that thing afloat, and it's you know, a
pretty strong game of that level. And uh, there's gonna
be some changes ahead, I think in terms of the
conference affiliations here. I think it's after next year things
are going to be switched up. The college football playoffs
is gonna be doing for the best seams. Yes, you know,
I was reading some things with Kim Adare I think
(41:37):
today where she was saying, you know, we're gonna have
some choices to make.
Speaker 6 (41:40):
It could be fun. There could be some you know conferences.
Speaker 4 (41:43):
Who knows what this PAC twelve conference, whatever that's gonna be.
Speaker 2 (41:47):
Is where where she doing.
Speaker 6 (41:48):
Michael lev wrote a story Okay.
Speaker 2 (41:50):
Okay, because from sen Day's prescott probably some comments that
it's always it's not news, but it's two day old news.
Speaker 6 (41:56):
Well you know me, I'm just reading that.
Speaker 2 (41:58):
No, no, no, but that's when you saw it, because
it's it's a two day.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
Maybe whenever she said it. I mean it's still the
situation is that you know the game is gonna have
some choices to make that are you know, maybe get
rid of Well, there's gonna be no what is it
Mountain West Conference.
Speaker 6 (42:14):
I guess there will be. I'm not quite sure in.
Speaker 2 (42:15):
The PAC twelve because they'll be pack twelve teams. Yeah
over there, so.
Speaker 4 (42:18):
There could be some FAC twelve affiliations, you know, the
San Diego States of the World, BO State.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
It might be able to get those teams here. I
mean that's would draw. That would draw, Yeah, that would draw.
You know, they need to draw. You need New Mexico
State to show up and play. And the Wyomings of
the world.
Speaker 4 (42:33):
Yeah, well, I mean even Presno States draws. Well there,
I mean, yeah, they've got a pretty strong In fact,
I think they might have had the best I don't
know percentage of stadium filled and in conference.
Speaker 6 (42:44):
Okay, they've always had a pretty good turnout.
Speaker 2 (42:46):
Of Oh that should be good through the years because
it's hard to see if Miami. You know, it's gonna
be a lot nicer here than it is gonna be
Miami Bio. Yeah. But you know, if you've done it once,
you gonna do it again.
Speaker 4 (42:56):
Yeah, and people will you know, they'll drive whatever you'll
stop at the Grand canyon or something. Come down for president.
You know, just make it a you know, an Arizona trip.
I guarantee you they'll have a pretty good crowd.
Speaker 2 (43:07):
Yeah, you should be the you and Eric Rhodes, he
can do it better. Yeah, was a partner of your channel,
chantl Foka are you channel? Guys?
Speaker 4 (43:17):
They were they were like, you know again going back
to that piece that Michael wrote, you know, just that
the ball was you know, kind of freaking out because
it took so long to make a decision with all
these you know, as we said earlier, all these schools
opting out of going and switch things up and wait
a minute, we need you know, we don't even have
a team from that conference available anymore.
Speaker 6 (43:35):
So they had to just kind of wait it out.
Speaker 2 (43:38):
Yeah, well that's called the rich man's problem. They would
have find out, they would have found a way, and
they did. Yeah, there's always money, had a good time.
I mean, it's one of the fun balls to get
to and snoop, I think he's here for another two
three years, right, Yeah, And there's that appeal always always obviously.
Speaker 3 (43:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (43:57):
I mean he's a name and it's a traction as
attract you know, it's a name that's going to attract attention.
Speaker 6 (44:03):
Let's put it that way.
Speaker 4 (44:03):
Yeah, when people see it it did last year what
it did last year, and he was he was here
and he did his thing and gets national coverage, doesn't.
Speaker 2 (44:11):
Hurt, right right, five two o four one, six, seventy
four forty We'll see what you have to say or
hear what you have to say. We got about uh
what time was it? You got about eight minutes here
in this hour. No, I'm not gonna have any breaking news,
so you can call in the next hour as well.
And then that four fifteen, four to seventeen, we're gonna
have Joan bon Vassini talking about women's basketball and uh
(44:33):
Arizona's situation as they start this season.
Speaker 6 (44:37):
Yeah, I mean good start.
Speaker 4 (44:39):
A little bit of a stumble here in the last
week or so, so, you know, losses maybe that people
didn't expect, but like, you know, who knew what to
expect honestly, when basically the entire rosters turned over and
they're playing, you know, for a brand new coach. They've got,
you know, the history on their side, They've got fans
who are going to be around and stick around and
no matter what, as long as they don't go like,
(45:01):
you know, four and twenty or something like that, people
will still come to the games.
Speaker 6 (45:04):
I would assume.
Speaker 2 (45:05):
Yeah, oh, might get my my interview for them all
they're just texting me for you're lying up guests. Yeah, well,
it's just funny to the person I was talking about
earlier off the year. So that'll be good. Uh, okay
again call five two oh four, one, six, four forty
talk about anything NFL wise or I'm sure you're not
paying attention to the NBA NBA, are you me? Yeah, No,
(45:27):
it's like baseball. It's like baseball season for me. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (45:29):
I mean the Suns were on last night and I
could actually see the game because it was on like Peacock.
Speaker 6 (45:34):
Oh really, okay, they beat Minnesota.
Speaker 2 (45:36):
Do you follow the Warriors kind They're like when I can,
They're like even right now, I think, yeah, twelve and twelve, thirteen, thirteen, whatever,
Like yeah, I just you know, just.
Speaker 4 (45:44):
Follow Steve just to hear what he's gonna say postgame.
You know he's a pretty salty comments.
Speaker 2 (45:48):
Yes, yes, yes, it's something he would never think he'd
say right the way he said that was perfect.
Speaker 4 (45:52):
Oh, it's because of the other guy, somebody. He'd looked
to the side, like, is it okay? If I say
that word?
Speaker 11 (45:59):
Right?
Speaker 2 (45:59):
You would think you wouldn't think that he would say
that word. But it was set up from the previous
day because the guy had said it. The guy had
said it, and they were all given him grief, and
his and his teammates were giving him grief because he
you know, he just showed up on the team and
he started talking smack and blah blah blah.
Speaker 6 (46:15):
How much longer you think he's going to coach? That's
a good question.
Speaker 2 (46:17):
I don't know. I don't know. He could do whatever
your damn wants, right. He probably hasn't spent any money.
One of the stories I did when he was with
the Bulls in ninety seven, when I spent a lot
of time with the Bulls back then. His wife he's
kind of he's kind of tight. At least that's his
wife had said. So he hadn't even spent his checks,
his his NBA checks, because you just do another He
(46:39):
made so much money doing other things, he didn't have to.
Speaker 4 (46:42):
You wish you had that problem, Wasn't that like Gronkowski
didn't he he did not He didn't spend his.
Speaker 2 (46:48):
Yeah, always you're on the air andine on the ball.
Who's this?
Speaker 7 (46:52):
Hi?
Speaker 13 (46:52):
My name?
Speaker 2 (46:53):
He can't.
Speaker 7 (46:55):
Hey, I've got a couple of questions regular sports radio
in general about specific sport Okay. The first question, and
this would I'm alluding to, you know network shows that
have a you know, their producer screens the calls or
(47:21):
call screen or regardless.
Speaker 13 (47:25):
And my question is, I don't know if you know
the answer.
Speaker 7 (47:29):
But why don't they tell the people that are calling
up they don't need to ask how the host is
today after he's been asked a dozen or more times.
Speaker 2 (47:39):
That's so funny. I think the same thing all the
time because it cuts into the tech. Yeah, yeah, how
you doing? It's like small talk right before you get
the question.
Speaker 7 (47:47):
Oh, it's just most of the people they are on
hold for like an hour something.
Speaker 2 (47:54):
Totally. I totally get it. Yeah, how you doing? You
the first time?
Speaker 6 (47:58):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (47:59):
That's funny.
Speaker 7 (48:00):
God. The other question is I notice well, I think
in the SEC or somewhere they charge like hundreds of
dollars to go to the press conferences.
Speaker 2 (48:17):
For the fans for the fans. Yes, okay, and I.
Speaker 7 (48:22):
Can remember years ago, you know, media people when you know,
I hear them on the air or something. You know,
they dragged going to press conferences, and you know I
would if they paid me, like a couple hundred bucks,
I'd go to a press conference.
Speaker 2 (48:39):
But otherwise you're kind of you know, so, what's the question?
Is there a question?
Speaker 7 (48:48):
Yeah? What what's the Why would someone want to go
to one?
Speaker 2 (48:52):
Well, we have to go. If you're in the press,
you have to go. If you want to box job,
if you do public, yeah, the public. Well it's because
it's it's because I'll explain it this way, and I
think Dave can kind of agree with this, and maybe
he will say it better than me. Dave, you get
to do this for a living. You get to go
talk to the guys, you know, these guys. You get
to go say hi to these guys and people outside
(49:13):
of our little arena. Right, don't they tell you, oh god, god,
it's not even working. You just go to the games
and then you're done. No, no, no, no. Work starts
right after the game when you do the interviews, and
you have to sit down and produce your story, right,
Dave and I have to sit down and write the story.
But people who don't know the business talk like that
or think like that?
Speaker 7 (49:33):
Right, I got you?
Speaker 2 (49:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (49:35):
Back with what he was saying, Well, Oklahoma is allowing
their fans can pay to go into the Oklahoma postgame conference.
Speaker 2 (49:42):
Anything to sell, right, anything to pay these guys a.
Speaker 6 (49:44):
Couple hundred Yeah, well what a bargain.
Speaker 2 (49:49):
Well, just to say, well, here's the problem is Arizona
had this issue maybe a month or so ago. They
had a fan in the room and he was cheering
or plotting in the room for an And that's the
last place you want to have those type of people
because it's a press room. You know, there's no cheering
in the press.
Speaker 7 (50:05):
Box, right, I hear you.
Speaker 2 (50:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (50:09):
Well, anyway, I enjoy your show, and I've used to
watch Dave on TV all the time, and now he
enjoyed his reporting.
Speaker 2 (50:18):
Well, great, thank you, thank you, thank you. Thanks for
the calling. Your first first time caller, right, first time caller, yes, yes,
well thanks to keep calling.
Speaker 13 (50:26):
Thank you first calling.
Speaker 2 (50:30):
At least you didn't ask me how am I doing?
So you pass that desk? Thanks thanks much.
Speaker 7 (50:35):
I want to be shot first. Thanks all right, you
all take care of the name of great holiday.
Speaker 2 (50:40):
Yeah you too, thank you, Thank you. Don't you get
that thought with people saying, oh yeah.
Speaker 4 (50:44):
Oh well you you got me to cover the NBA Finals,
you got to cover this Super Bowls, you got to
cover the World Series and stuff.
Speaker 6 (50:51):
I was working.
Speaker 2 (50:52):
Well, no, no, it was really stressful. After the ninety
seventy game. I wrote a calm you know, maybe three
weeks afterwards, and how how the late hours, long days
You're at the Final four And I wouldn't I wouldn't
do anything else. I love what I do and did
what I do. But I wrote, we ate, we ate
Easter breakfat Easter dinner at Hooters because that was the
(51:13):
only thing that was open. And then it was late.
You know, you do things things that people don't know.
And I guess one of the one of my people
who read me back then or read me back then,
sent a letter to the editor and he was upset
with me writing all this stuff that this is kind
of like behind the screen, behind the thing, this is
why did you do that? Says well, this is what
(51:34):
we went through. I mean, this is what we go through.
People don't understand and it's not work. And he says, well,
you and the person who wrote the letters is you
could be a roofer in July, you have you get
to do these things. And I'm thinking, granted, yes, but
it's not what you think.
Speaker 4 (51:48):
It's just not that's funny because uh, you know, I
think back to that week in Indianapolis. I know you
got to go to a break here in a second,
but half a minute, there was a tornado.
Speaker 6 (51:58):
Yeah, remember that.
Speaker 4 (51:59):
So we're out there in the parking lot totally exposed. Yeah,
and lightning is all over the place. The rain was
coming sideways. Yeah, and they finally chased away away. They said,
you guys got to leave. Yeah, and you know, I'm
like talking back to the station. No, we're going to
be on the air in like thirty two minutes.
Speaker 6 (52:12):
No, you gotta go. Do you remember it was a
crazy time.
Speaker 2 (52:15):
There was a reporter and he's still he's on radio now,
Ray Ratto, crazy, Ray Rattle. So we were we were
in the media area, you know, beers and food and
blah blah blah, and he said, this is the day
we're going to die, and this is the obituary. Uh
twenty five journalists or fifty journalists died in the hotel,
including uh, who does the who does the game? The
(52:36):
good looking dude Jim Nantz. Yeah, including Jim Nat and
Jim Nance. Including Jim nant So he's the only one
that's going to be mentioned in this group of people.
Yet there's Jim Nantz and twenty five other sports reporters
died last night, you know, in a in a rain storm.
Speaker 6 (52:49):
I remember we were out there.
Speaker 4 (52:50):
Remember John Feinstein yein just passed away in last year
or so, he was.
Speaker 6 (52:54):
We were helping him do live shots too.
Speaker 2 (52:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (52:57):
So I'm just standing there like John, you know, it's
it's we gotta go, we gotta go. It was a
crazy time.
Speaker 2 (53:03):
I remember it well, Okay, we gotta go. Take away
