Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services ensure
your most prized possessions.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to Eye on the Ball here
at Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. I'm Steve Rivera, Your Troy Hunchesson,
your one. We have a pretty good show today. Welcome back.
I wasn't here Thursday and Friday, too busy working any paid,
doing another job, getting tired one you rested? Rest? What

(00:36):
does that mean?

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Rest?

Speaker 2 (00:37):
What was that? See? The other job we have is
is that it's a fun job, right, but it's a
different it's different at walky. It demands differently than most
other jobs. Right, let's gonna have Jay Agans all us
on when my Friday guy. Uh today he got into
some bruja has with some people on Twitter, some viral brujas. Yeah,

(01:00):
it's just crazy. Would we talk about this stuff all
the time? Right, and you kind of fan uh the
fan the flame because he's right, Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's right.
It is what it is. I almost fell over. Jay
was right. No, I knew he was right.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
So we'll talk about that and then guess who's looking
for seventeen.

Speaker 4 (01:18):
Yeah, Chuck Cecil, you're gonna have Chuck Cecil. You know
I was on a legend and ASU hater.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
The issue guy five. So we'll talk about all that
and and his big play, right, I kind of want
to just you know, how many times can you talk
about his play? Probably not it? Never enough. Yeah, so
we'll talk about that. Yeah, you know, everybody gets happy
when he talks about stuff like that.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
And I got a good story for Chuck that I
want to see if he remembers.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Okay, okay, so we'll do all that. You guys can
still call in five to two O four one six
seventy four forty Uh, Juan, I was ready to take
you to dinner today, but you said you have other plans. Yes,
I had prior, prior engagements. Okay, okay, I want to
ask you what the word because I'm not that curious.

(02:02):
That's that's the most various sentence I've ever heard. He
was falling asleep saying, but you know I'm sincere when
I say that.

Speaker 5 (02:10):
Yeah, yeah, you know you I appreciate when you say
it because you don't know you're meaning it.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Yeah, you heard me on the phone today with a
number of Coluinnel. Yeah, and that was you know, straight
to the points.

Speaker 5 (02:20):
That's probably what you just said was nicest thing you
said all day.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Yes, okay with that. Uh so you know, hey, eight
and four, eight and three, three could be nine and
three and you would be wrong.

Speaker 5 (02:34):
Wrong, wrong, good, wrong. That's what most fans are hoping
for on Friday. Yeah, which is which is very cool
for you. And no one had them at except for you.
I remember I had the five, I had six and six,
but they've caught fire. Like I said last week after
I saw I didn't see the game on Saturday, but
I was getting texts from Vic, who I hope calls in,
you know, doom and gloom Vic until it stopped, so

(02:57):
I figured everyone was okay. You know, resiscitation was fine
in the second half. But tell me the week before,
because we talked about you were here. The confidence, I thought,
not momentum, headstock confidence. They didn't have it in the
first half, or they had it and say, well how
was that?

Speaker 4 (03:12):
No, you know, I thought they played a good game
all around. I know they were down at halftime, but
the first half to me was more about trying to
slow down the ball and limit Baylor's possessions because you're
talking about a high powered offense, some injuries on defense,
so you're trying to feel them out and see where
they are offensively, trying to eat up clock, and you know,
you have a missfield goal here, and it kind of
kicked them in the butt. But seventeen fourteen at half,

(03:36):
that's not hard to overcome. It's not like you're down
seventeen points or anything like that.

Speaker 5 (03:41):
There was a stretch I think between the end of
the first half in the third quarter where I thought
the offense left a lot out on the field. Yeah,
and I thought that was going to come back to
bite them. But then the defense shows up and shuts
down Baylor completely, really for three quarters, because the fourteen
in the first quarter, fourteen points for Baylor in the

(04:02):
first quarter, and they didn't find the end zone again.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
And I'll add this on both Baylor's scoring drives, there
are two weird plays. One a fumble that goes out
of balance. Okay, Baylor goes on and scoring that drive,
but they fumbled the ball. Two a fumble that Arizona recovers,
but they call forward progress the moment the Arizona defenders
and Trading's Duke sit them clear fumble, clear fumble, but

(04:25):
they called it the moment of contact.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Both of those scoring drives could have been prevented. I
mean it was. It wasn't great play by Baylor.

Speaker 5 (04:33):
And there were fourth down and third down pass interference penalties, which.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
I thought, I go fifty to fifty, I guess, but
I saw.

Speaker 4 (04:42):
The argument for it. I don't think it was they
were like, oh, that was a horrible call. I could
see the argument for it.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
So let me ask both of you this, and I'll
ask Jay this, and I'll ask whoever calls this, are
you believers in this team? One in Brennan? Two yes
and yes?

Speaker 6 (04:57):
What one?

Speaker 2 (04:59):
I think the changing of the staff.

Speaker 4 (05:01):
I think that's the biggest thing that Bret Brennan is
the firing that Dino Babers and watching Duwayne and Kina
leave the program and getting the right guys in place.
A young guy like Seth Dage who's more creative, Danny
Gonzalez that's been in DC before. No offense to Duwayne Kina,
he's a great defensive mind. He had never been a
defense coordinator before. So guys that know what they're doing

(05:21):
in that place, and can be innovative on the offensive
side of the ball. And then getting in recruiters like
Joe Salavea, like a Josh Springle, like these guys that
Josh Miller that are young and wanting to go out
there and recruit. I think that's number one for the
coaching staff and for the team. You look at the
sixty one new players that they brought in through the
transfer portal and the recruiting class, almost every single one

(05:46):
of those transfers hit in some way. Even a guy
like Ian Wagner, he's been great at holding snaps on
field goals and he's been one of the most efficient
kickoff kickers in the country. Transferred from Northern Illinois. Youngstown
isn't I thought it was Northern Illinois. It was something
going yeah, but out in that Midwest there somewhere else,
yeah yeah. But they hit on every single one of those.

(06:08):
And then you look at the depth at the offensive line.
They were banged up in that game. You saw Perez play,
You saw is to play, I mean East to play.
You saw a bunch of dudes that haven't played all season,
and they still went out there and kicked their butt
because they've been developing these guys, and these are guys
that they've gotten in the portal and through the recruiting classes.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
So you're seeing development.

Speaker 5 (06:29):
For the team. I'm a believer for the coach, Coach
Brandon not yet, Okay, I think I need to see
a little bit more sample size because this is a
very loaded team as far as ten years go and experience.
We saw it on Saturday, twenty eight seniors were honored,
so that you're a big majority of what comes out

(06:50):
onto the field because they're carrying the team. Yes, I believe,
so not to say that people are developing behind them,
but most of the plays being made this season have
been from the it's more experienced players. So what is
it going to look like next year? And okay, I
say that kind of whatever, because there's still games to play,
two more games, at least two more games.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
To play in this season, and it's it's gonna be
a tougher schedule next year.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
Exactly.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
You're not going to avoid Texas Stack, You're you're one
of your easy games is going to be West Virginia
on the road. It's gonna be tough.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Hello, you're on the air and nine on the ball.
Who's this?

Speaker 3 (07:29):
Hello?

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Hello, you're on there there? Yeah, who's this this?

Speaker 3 (07:34):
Brian?

Speaker 2 (07:35):
Brian? What's the word.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
Well, it's a good game, very good game. You know
we won, could have I mean, we could have won
by a lot more. We made. There was a couple
of just stupid mistakes we made. You know, the two
penalties they didn't cost us on the ones on the
touchdowns whatever happened, you know, taking the helmet off, and
the other one, you know, obraok zuberants I guess you know,

(07:57):
the personal fouls and also too, they did get a
touchdown on the drive. I do believe on the one
where they were they were going to go for fourth
it was fourth and sixth and they drew us off
side and they got then they wound up getting the
first down and then they went down and scored. But

(08:19):
that second half they were just amazing. Offense and defense
was just clicking. I was so impressed by the adjustments
made and how they came out and played in the
second half.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Let me ask you, let me ask you this, ask
the guys this, and you probably heard the question, are
you a believer now in Brennan? Are you a believer
now in the team?

Speaker 3 (08:36):
On both both.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Quick assessment on both.

Speaker 3 (08:43):
I think Brennan to me, if you look at what
he's done, I mean, I know he did have some
players last year, but he got in so late, wasn't
able to get maybe the coordinators he wanted or whatever,
and so he struggled to last year, got the people
he needed to turn this program around and got the
proper people to recruit. Done a fantastic job with that.

(09:04):
The quality of players he's gotten, you know, they bought
into this program, and I'm very impressed by him. I
think the team itself. You watch them play, and they
play with heart constantly. You know, they're even when they're down,
they're playing with heart. It's like, you know, even though
we might be down, I don't feel that we're out

(09:25):
of the game.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
Did you think four weeks in did you think four
weeks in there were three and one after the Iowa
State game if I'm correct, Did you think that you
would believe on the team and believe in the coach
at that time?

Speaker 3 (09:37):
Well, okay, the team know the coach, Yes, because it
was really truly this is his first year, because I
don't count last year because he got hired so late.
Everybody left, and you know, it's just it was just
pick up anything you can get to make a team.
But I think, you know what, I understand what he's

(09:57):
trying to do. I think it's fantastic job he's done.
I think maybe in the Big twelve you might look
at him as coach of the year. This team was
picked sixteenth in the conference.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
I remember it, and oh, yeah, you're right, there's.

Speaker 3 (10:12):
No yeah, well, I mean, you know, everybody basically, I
mean a lot of the other the national writers picked
us last. Okay, but but still we went out there
and what we've done. No other team has shown this
kind of improvement. I mean, okay, by us where they're
supposed to be. Texas Tech is where they're supposed to be,

(10:34):
hey issues, basically where they're supposed to be. You know,
all these teams above us are where they're supposed to be,
but not Arizona. Arizona started at the bottom and basically
has worked themselves up, you know, until the top five
of the conference. And if you look at their three losses,
one they got blown out, two other ones you know,

(10:56):
win both.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
I think Brian, you go to the games, correct, yes, okay,
So just we're not gonna we're gonna end it with
this question and just a quick quick thought on this
the crowd crowd size, because Jay's coming on later, but
what do you think it was small?

Speaker 3 (11:09):
It was small, you know, Okay, Okay, yeah it was.
It was maybe thirty. There might have been thirty thousand
there at the stadium maybe, Okay, you know.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
Okay, No, that's fair. Good to know, and I'm sure
that was disappointing. But we'll get to that point when
Jake comes on the show later. Thank you, brother, I
was always calling in thank you, Okay, yeah, I appreciate it. Yees.
So thirty is that about right? I would say about
thirty to thirty three, That's what I thought, Okay, I
would say giving.

Speaker 5 (11:34):
I would give that thirty three towards the end of
the game when it starts, because it came.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
It kind of showed up late, very late. That's what
people do. Filling out is a generous word to call it. Yeah, yeah,
it just expanded a little expanded.

Speaker 5 (11:47):
It was a good crowd given the average for this season. Yeah,
and what it's looked like this season. It's still a
bad crowd for a seventy and three team on senior Day, right,
That moved on take in three.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
I'm gonna be I'm gonna be honest.

Speaker 4 (11:59):
I think the best crowd of the year was the
BYU game, and that was that was bad.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
I was there. I was there in the main by Yeah,
and they were in that corner or whatever it was,
and they bought a lot of people were on the
west side.

Speaker 4 (12:11):
I was the can't stay real quick. Did you see
the BYUS Cincinnati game? Yeah, most of that stadium was
by Houston fans. So to the point of the traveling,
they do it so.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
We'll get to the crowd here because we harp on
that a lot, maybe a little too much, but still
people are tired of see I see it on Twitter.
Oh you guys don't know what you're talking about. Good
the fans who go this is not about you. Congratulations guys.
You did a great job and continue to do a
great job. But there's a lot of factors. Over the weekend. Yesterday,
in fact, a couple of older people I know, older

(12:43):
than me, uh, gave up their tickets. They don't go anymore.
It's too difficult, the boring game of three hours, they said,
I'm using their words, three hours. They have to get
to the car, get to the events, get to the stairs,
get to the places. It's too much already. Yeah, I
get that. Hey, I was a fan for the Kansas
State game. I think I'm a fan, but I went.
It was hot. It was the hot day, and I
don't know if I can deal with this, you know,

(13:05):
eventually when the.

Speaker 4 (13:05):
Sun of the Oklahoma State game, no, no, no, it
was the one recently Kansas, Kansas, Kansas, Yeah, okay.

Speaker 2 (13:11):
And I stayed there. It was hot, you know, blah
blah blah. I don't think I get it now. Sorry,
I messed up with saying this is horrible. But it
was hot. I survived it. What eighty forty degrees? I survived.
But I understand it's difficult for people to go in Tucson.
So there's that. There's a lot of factors, right, and
I don't know if I don't know if there are fixes.

(13:32):
I don't know if they're fix.

Speaker 4 (13:33):
I think there's small fixes that can be done, but
at the end of the day, it's well, I don't
even know it's that, to be honest, because rich rod
won and it didn't matter. They couldn't draw anything during
the rich Roddy era, which makes no sense. I think
it is the fan base. It's just what it is. Yeah,
you know, we talk about it, and we again, you

(13:53):
said we're gonna have day on. But you know, if
you don't want to go, and you're not gonna go,
you're gonna have every excuse in there.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
And then I've heard a lot of them. We've all
heard a lot of them. Yeah, yeah, And we'll talk
about you because you retweeted Jake what they say to you.

Speaker 4 (14:07):
Oh, you know, you get comp tickets, so why are
you talking. I work people, that's called jobs. So you go.
You don't drink, you don't have fun, you work. Sorry,
I hate to tell you guys that. And then oh,
you know, the soda is too expensive. They have the
value of everything. Well that's not good enough.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
Then don't go.

Speaker 4 (14:25):
Just yeah, yeah, I mean that's the yeah, don't do like,
don't make that an excuse.

Speaker 2 (14:30):
I asked somebody though this weekend when he went for
the first time, he can understand why people don't go.
It's three hours. It's three hours that you can't get back.
But that's just for the game. You go an hour
before it's like waiting for a flight to get to
count to New York. You got to get to an
hour before you got to go to the game. You
go through the three hour flight, you got to your car,
you have another hour, a five hour deal. Now, I'll

(14:52):
say this.

Speaker 4 (14:52):
I think the two things that they could fix that
would help, but it takes money to do these things. Yeah,
is fix the stadiums. Get rid of the bleachers. You
need to get rid of that. Yeah, on both sites,
both Yeah, you need to get rid of it. Zona
Zoom you could probably keep because the students are standing.

Speaker 2 (15:10):
Whatever.

Speaker 4 (15:11):
Number two is the transportation. Again, back in the day,
you used to have the sun trend. That would drop
you off to another issue. That helps out so many
people of the senior crowd of the group, and just
families too. When you're trying to move around with a
family of four, it's a little especially if you have
young kids, it's difficult to do that.

Speaker 2 (15:30):
It's funny because they talked about this, we got to
go eighties, nineties and two thousand, blah blah blah. In
the eighties there were less on TV. Some people went, probably,
now you get you got a clitterd screen video. You
can take advantage for your two dollars beer in the
house that's in the fridge. You know what I'm saying.
It's more convenient for yourself, pizzas a lot cheaper. Yeaha yeha,

(15:50):
So you can watch it at home. We got to
go take a break. We'll get ahold of you and
talk more about this.

finding I want to take part in the show call
up Steve now went five to two oh four, one, six,
seventy four forty.

Speaker 2 (20:49):
Hey, welcome back to ly Well here on Fox Sports
forteen and fifteen. I'm Steve Rivera, here with Troy, here
with one and now with Jay Gonzalez. You can't you
can't be on this radio show show without getting in trouble, you.

Speaker 3 (21:03):
Know, Steve, I just well that's me, you know, I
just you know, just stirring up trouble. But you know
I was a little pissed off on set on Saturdays.
She couldn't tell Yeah, and.

Speaker 2 (21:10):
You gave it. You know, we had Brian on earlier.
I knew you probaby heard he was saying thirty thirty
three ish you said about post to four. Did you
give a number?

Speaker 3 (21:20):
No? No, the announced attendance.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
Was forty yeah, forty yes, so it wasn't even close.

Speaker 3 (21:26):
Yes, Steve, I don't think they had forty one time,
even the BYU game. You know, I've got I've got
the attendance numbers up, b Yu. They're not forty seven thousand,
ninety sixty. No, there weren't forty. There weren't forty thousand
people at the BYU game. And the reason that attendance
was seven thousand more than all the other games because
of the BYU fans. Yeah, you know there were between

(21:50):
thirty and thirty five. Every game might have been under
thirty even a couple of them.

Speaker 2 (21:55):
Yeah, oh, we were staking that was definitely under thirty.
Here's my problems.

Speaker 3 (22:01):
Their reign and stuff on that one.

Speaker 2 (22:02):
But yeah, yeah, here's my problems. You and you were
when we were on the show together. All the time.
We talk about the fans, and we and we talk
about the generous fans who show up and show out Right,
you're not talking about those dudes. You're not talking about No,
not at all?

Speaker 3 (22:16):
Are you kidding the fans that go the solid twenty
five to thirty thousand fans that go good for the
I mean, I love those guys and they come every game.
I see the same people at the tailgates every week.
You know, walking into the state, you will see all
these people. It's it's the other nine hundred and sixty thousand,

(22:38):
ninety six ready, nine hundred ninety thousand, six hundred fans
or people in this town that don't go to the games.
There's a million people in this town, billion people in
this town. I think too. I think Phoenix and Tucson
are the two largest populations in the Big twelve. I'll
maybe use that. I get it, but well, I don't understand,

(23:00):
and you can't get forty five fifty thousand people in
the Bey game. There's got to be one hundreds of
thousands of U of A alumni here, there's what forty
thousand students and we can't get we can't do better
than what we're doing attendance.

Speaker 4 (23:14):
Like you know what, I think it's time to have
a conversation about because they did this during the Ridge
rot era. They shrunked the Zona Zoo because they weren't
coming to games. It's time to expand again back to
what it was. Because if you're not if you're not
going to sell those tickets, give it to them.

Speaker 2 (23:30):
They're going give them to them.

Speaker 3 (23:32):
But charges, you know, and I'm assuming I'm on because
of the ruck as I caused one on Twitter with
you know, with that stuff that that conversation is still
going on. I had to pick that you did, and
I appreciate you doing that because all the excuses that
I said people were making, they made them again on
the on the thread and you know, and then the

(23:54):
ones who said it's not too much said it's we're
ten bucks this game.

Speaker 2 (23:57):
Yep.

Speaker 3 (23:58):
You know, you know, they've lowered they've lowered concession prices.
The weather's been beautiful, The game kinds have been great.
What are we complaining about? Everybody still found something to
complain about him that and that's that's the killer of
it is that there's, as I said in the there's
always an excuse, you know, else four was going on.

(24:18):
You tell me you got the numbers, how many people
rode an Outdour? Then how many more people volunteered to participated?

Speaker 2 (24:25):
Sure, and it's it's a totally different ground too, you.

Speaker 3 (24:27):
Know, yeah, I would have a different crouds. First of all,
what half the ridings maybe are from out of town?

Speaker 2 (24:34):
Yeah yeah, right, yeah.

Speaker 3 (24:37):
Yeah, okay, So of course, I mean it's going to
have a little impact, but not what they had. And
the and the kicker. The kicker wasn't What really got
me riled up, and obviously I'm still rub up was
walking into the stadium. I come in, I come in
on the north east side, right by where the Low
Stevens entrance is that through that gate, walking up the

(25:00):
steps onto the concourse and seeing the stadium three quarters
empty while Senior Day was going on, and I'm like,
you know, all we hear about is just win and
well and the fans will come well they won the
fans didn't come and they didn't come in onto these
kids that stuck around, you know, stuck with Brennan, stuck

(25:24):
with the program after you know, a losing season last
year and came back, played hard one game and our
fans threw them the finger. And that was really what
pissed me off. That set me off.

Speaker 12 (25:38):
Yeah, and then the one guy who says, well, you
took a picture at the beginning of the game.

Speaker 3 (25:42):
Some people don't get into the second quarter because their
tail game. So what do you guys dog your fans.
I mean, the seniors were being on You couldn't one
game come in early for them? You know those other things,
all those things are there's winning the game. I'm just
offt you the whole game.

Speaker 4 (26:04):
No, it's insane because it's not just excuse uh, it's
thrown back at you when those when you make those comments.
Because I had somebody comment, well, you get comp tickets
to the game. No, no, no, no, I get a credential.

Speaker 3 (26:17):
You don't.

Speaker 4 (26:19):
I work at the game. It's not that exciting people.
You go to the game, you work, You're not eating
weans and getting drunk. It it's not it's two different things.

Speaker 2 (26:28):
How about the guy.

Speaker 3 (26:30):
Wait, how about the guy on the thread? Okay again,
first of all, I've never had we with over a
thousand likes, so that this this one guy. Okay, I
take a picture and I post it and I make
my comment and the guy on My response is were
you there? Yeah? What do you mean there?

Speaker 2 (26:57):
That's an AI photo?

Speaker 3 (26:58):
Jay?

Speaker 2 (26:58):
Come on, well you wouldn't that got me what they
got me? And I wanted to respond I still might.
I'm not so sure. Well fourteen fifty he mentioned the show.
I didn't know what he meant. What is tell you meant?

Speaker 3 (27:10):
That's yeah, Well there was noody. There was somebody that
on the eye on the Ball thread that made a
really nasty comment that one No, no, don't work. Can
I find that one? It was?

Speaker 2 (27:23):
It was U pornographic.

Speaker 3 (27:26):
Let's just say, oh really, okay.

Speaker 2 (27:29):
Do I have to do something to myself?

Speaker 3 (27:33):
No? No, you'd do something to somebody else?

Speaker 10 (27:36):
What it said?

Speaker 2 (27:37):
Okay? Good good? I hope he's listening. You can call it.

Speaker 3 (27:41):
But again it's frustrating Steve, because oh yeah, you know again,
through all the through all this stuff, we always said,
right you and I on the show said times if
you win the fans will come. Whether we're fair weather fans,
whatever you want to call the fans, you win, they'll come. Well,
Arizona watch there's seven of three going into this game,
and we and we had on Friday night, I was

(28:04):
told that it was going to be the lowest attended
game of the season. And I'm like, wait, what, why
is it not going to be the highest attended game
in the season. There's seven and three is see your day,
it's a day game, it's the weather's going to be beautiful.
Why are we going to have the lowest attended game?
And there are only two games that announces attendance was lower, Weaver,
State of Kansas stated, And it's like, why, I understand why? Yeah,

(28:32):
you know, and I heard it, you know, Steve, I
heard you talking about I heard you talking about, well,
you know that that's some fans, some fan for instance. Well,
it's a three hour game. Takes a long time to
get there. It takes it's been like that for one
hundred years.

Speaker 2 (28:46):
Yeah, yeah, no, no, no, but you should you of all people,
And I'm not trying because you are the guy that
we kind of run things against because you are data.
You go to these games. Uh, you've seen this for years.
I mean, that's part of it. I have, I mean
just can.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
For years, and there's always an excuse.

Speaker 2 (29:03):
We talked about it, but we talked about it for
a time.

Speaker 3 (29:07):
But let's let's remember Steve, remember the attendance during the
stops years. You only had like two good teams, and
yet we were getting fifty thousand people. Again, I was
a kid. Changed was that Iowa gain, that i Wowa game,

(29:28):
whatever season that was. I couldn't fit into my seat.
There were so many people there you couldn't fit into
the seat. You know, somebody did a business story. I
think I did a business story about the economic impact
of that game into use on on that weekend, and

(29:50):
part of it was because of your Iowa fans who came.
But you know, we this fan base has done it before.
What's happened in the last few years, five years, ten years,
whatever it's been that people just stopped coming to the game.
And you can't tell me it's like that everywhere. It isn't.

(30:11):
It isn't. There's a lot of full stadiums with bad
teams and a lot, you know, more full stadium and
good teams. People go to games and we in this
town have just stop.

Speaker 4 (30:23):
You know, one thing that I've noticed. I'm sure you
guys will agree. Outside of Oregon and traditionally Washington, the
West Coast in general, over the last fifteen years, it's
been terrible trying to get people into it, trying to
get people to football games. It doesn't matter if you're
at Colorado, it doesn't matter if you're at usc doesn't
matter if you're at Stanford, Washington, like you name it.

(30:45):
It's been West Coast people just don't give a crap
about football.

Speaker 3 (30:49):
It's like, yeah, looking your cla, their games look like
high school games.

Speaker 2 (30:55):
I don't know if they could fill that. So one
of our guys reads a listener to say they went
to go see Soups games so they want to see
his head explode every game.

Speaker 3 (31:06):
Okay, there was some of that.

Speaker 2 (31:10):
Yeah, just a screenshot that I in the ball quote.
I'm trying to find it in tweet, you know, me
on Twitter. I hate it because it's it's a bunch
of this crap, you know, back and forth, and everybody
has the right answer, but they can't, you know, figure
out their own lives. Shipped that to me so I
can get instructions of what to do.

Speaker 3 (31:29):
Yeah, you're you're they they they said, you perform a
bodily function on somebody. I'll have to find it.

Speaker 2 (31:37):
Yeah, please, please hope it's not you. So no, let's
let's switch to basketball real quick. Late game tonight. Are
you going You're not going? H So, you know, I
was gonna say, we're gonna look at the crowd and say,
what the hell happened that?

Speaker 4 (31:52):
You know, I'll give them. It's a Monday night, eight thirty.
I get you have ased number two. It's Denver on
a Monday night in the middle of the beginning of
a work week. I kind of get that compared to
the football game.

Speaker 2 (32:04):
Right before. I gotta get that compared to the football game.

Speaker 3 (32:09):
Yeah, we're gonna above the state. We're gonna have to
We're gonna have to entertain ourselves tonight by watching the
the points spread because you know it's gonna be a
bad game. As you said, it's a it's a Monday
night and it's it's uh, you know, it's gonna be
a I don't think that there's gonna be a big,
you know, much of a crowd there. Okay, so let

(32:29):
me ask you, it's probably not gonna be a very
good game.

Speaker 2 (32:31):
No, so let me ask you, because you haven't been
on the show for a couple of weeks now, and
you won't be on Friday as we as we move
forward because of the holiday. Uh, what about this team
and the team you see? I have my thoughts? So
what are yours?

Speaker 3 (32:43):
Well, you know, it's obviously it's still early, but I'm
gonna be I'm over state this. This is as good
a team as I've seen in a really really long time.
I mean like a really really long time. You know.
I think back to the team that was undefeated when

(33:03):
it was when? When? When? What's the name that hurts?
I don't see a team that that that. This team,
as we've seen it so far, couldn't be because of
the pieces that they have. You know, they're so physical
is one thing. It was one of the things. CoA
Pete is just a beast in there. But those carshen Kob,

(33:27):
you know, I'll tell you what the weak link right
now to me, and I hate to put it this way,
but sort of the spot that's kind of still a
little Iffy's creus. I feel like he still hasn't gotten
his seat under him right.

Speaker 2 (33:41):
It's funny because no, you're right. But let me tell
you every press conference, I say it again tonight because
he hates me asking the question. Creevius is you can
see the slowly that he's slowly progress right, Remember he
didn't play much, not to yourself. Every game experience, it
looks like it's a little step, a little step, a
little that go ahead. I was going to say, I

(34:02):
think that.

Speaker 3 (34:06):
Was his best game, and he's gotten better each game.
You can you can see him getting his legs underneath him.
And if he does that, how good can these guys do?
Look Jade Bradley, I'm sorry. We've always talked about everybody
always talks about if you have a veteran point guard,
you can be really, really good. And Jade Bradley is fearless.

(34:27):
You know when when you know when they're when when
when they got behind there at the you know, at
the end of the at the end of the Yukon game,
when I'm sitting here watching the game, and I said,
Jay Bradley is gonna do something because he always does.
And he did and and it's it's he's and and
what he brings to the court to me is his

(34:48):
valuable There aren't a lot of teams that have that.
That a guy on the court that's gonna stay calm,
who's handling the ball, who's in charge out there, and
who makes the rest of his guys follow him and
makes them better. He is so good at that. And
I you know, when I saw he was sticking around
because you know, I mean, well, he obviously wasn't gonna

(35:10):
get tracked. But I thought, if Jaydon Bradley is here
in twenty to this season, the Cats have a chance
to be really, really good because you know, every really
good team that they've had over the years has had
a great point guard, a great veteran point guard. You know,
you think of Steve Kerr, you think of of kJ McConnell,
you know, those kinds of guys, and Jade brad is

(35:32):
that guy. And he's way more athletic than both of
those guys.

Speaker 4 (35:37):
Yeah, yeah, you know, And I was going to bring
up the point I think not only is he one
of the top three, top two, I think he's the
best point guard in the country in terms of veteran
leadership college basketball. This takes the NBA factor out of
the equation. He's the best point guard Arizona's had since
c J.

Speaker 3 (35:53):
McConnell, without a doubt.

Speaker 4 (35:56):
And it's just a guy. You dictate the offense, he
dictate the rhythm in tempo. You don't have to get
over like out of your own skin. You're not trying
to make wild plays. This is pure point guard at
the college basketball level, which is rare to see nowadays.

Speaker 3 (36:12):
Yeah, I think, you know, when you compare those two guys,
I think the floor leadership to me is the same.
It's a it's a wash. PJ was probably a better distributor,
right Yeah, because he had to be because he was
not a very good shooter, and he wasn't going to
get into the lane and make plays the way Jayden
Bradley does. Jayden Bradley, you know, he could get in

(36:35):
the lane and get a basket if they need to,
and he is money with that ten to fifteen foot shot,
so that not people don't take anymore.

Speaker 2 (36:44):
I've written this a couple of times when we got
a say goodbye that he reminds me a lot of
Jason Terry in nineteen ninety nine when he had to
take over the games because there was right there was
really offensively nobody left and he had the he had
the player that year, and I locked up with the
CBS because he had to do something.

Speaker 3 (37:01):
It's that he's got a better supporting cast than Jason
Terry had, no question. I mean, look at the look
at the guys that they've got. Oh my god, even
even Delorso who held in the gaming hen say, okay,
they just didn't give the ball to the guy with
Delorso's coverage and they're gonna score. Even he's improved his game,

(37:22):
he's still not. He's still not. You doesn't have the
you know, super quick feet, but you can tell he's
a much smarter and stronger player, and he brings more
to the tables defensively. And if he makes three three
three pointers or three pointers in the game, then he's
done his job and he's he's a huge benefit. You know.

(37:45):
So these guys are really really good.

Speaker 2 (37:48):
Yeah, so I got your got yours? What the guy said?
Could you send me the threat because I can't find it?

Speaker 3 (37:53):
I want to respond, Okay, okay, yeah, I'll send you
the tweet. Yeah, thanks, thanks. You're not gonna what are
you gonna? You're not gonna tell me you already do?
Are you?

Speaker 2 (38:04):
I'm gonna tell you. I'm gonna tell you. Thanks for listening, Christopher,
thanks for listening. Sponsors, appreciate you. You gotta go.

Speaker 3 (38:15):
You know I got I got called a lot of
names over the weekend, but that's fine. You know. Look,
I started a conversation and it's still going and I
love that.

Speaker 2 (38:25):
Like you said, you've never felt still loved before.

Speaker 3 (38:29):
Well and to say when you please stop fighting with people,
well I had to do that.

Speaker 2 (38:35):
That's the jay.

Speaker 3 (38:35):
I know that.

Speaker 2 (38:36):
It's called Tuesday, it's Monday. Okay, Yeah, that's why people
love me. Thanks man, We'll see.

Speaker 3 (38:42):
You all right, see you tonight. Okay, man, we gotta go.

Speaker 2 (38:46):
We're over. We're not going to solve any problems with
the attendance. I mean, we can talk about it all
we want. That's what we do. Okay, Thanks, we'll come back.

Hey, welcome back to on the Ball here on Fox
Sports Sports fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. You're Troy Hunchison, that's
all I'll believe it. Well, you're Troy. You're not true,
not Troy and Troy Ray, Troy Ray and who you with?
He doesn't swarm? Yeah, that that guy. But yeah, you

(43:08):
have to find I can't Jason me the tweet. It's stupid.
It's stupid, very creative. Yeah, well, he's a sports fan.
He must be like two years old. He got ahold
of He does his stuff for poops and giggles with
some real somewhat real good luck. Christopher works the rusty krab. Yeah,

(43:32):
you guys want to call pas duke. Everybody has a
thought on this fan stuff. The UA football team. Did
you believe this? Can you believe this? The basketball team
doing what it does? Number two in the country? What
does it mean? On November twenty third fourth? Not a
damn thing, Troy. You've been listening to too much, really,
but but but you've been around enough. I see this
with all due respect, because hey, it beats the alternative

(43:55):
being three, four, five, twenty whatever. The two is fantastic.
They've done fantastically well, there's no denying that, and you know,
give them the choice of winning and losing. But November, December, January, February, March,
four more months, we got to call real quick. Hello,
you're on the air nine.

Speaker 3 (44:13):
The ball, Hey, Steve, just calling.

Speaker 12 (44:17):
I commented on Jay's tweet the other day.

Speaker 3 (44:23):
Also, you know, I basically called him lame. I said,
your lame. But I love Jay, but people don't have
the passion that me and him do.

Speaker 12 (44:32):
I'm just like him.

Speaker 3 (44:33):
I get mad, I get upset. You know, I go
to every game.

Speaker 12 (44:37):
I go to every I'm going tonight to the basketball game.
I got four football tickets, five basketball.

Speaker 3 (44:44):
Tickets, and I gave away those tickets to that football
game three times. I gave away two tickets that I
had extra and I gave them.

Speaker 12 (44:54):
Away three times, and I got them back all three
times because people said, oh I got some from somebody else,
got some from somebody else. But you know, every game
that I went to, there hasn't been a good a
lot of people, but the crowds have been I think good,
you know, like loud and.

Speaker 2 (45:12):
Once there there. Yes, you didn't give me your name,
but let me ask you, well, if you if you
can solve it in two ideas, just two thoughts of
how they can fix it, give me two.

Speaker 3 (45:26):
I don't think they can.

Speaker 12 (45:28):
I mean, I'm going to the basketball game tonight, and
I've been to all the basketball games for the last couple.

Speaker 3 (45:34):
Of years and they don't even get full, you know.
And that's fourteen thousand compared to thirty thousand that are
forty thousand that they say we're getting. That's four times
the people.

Speaker 2 (45:47):
You know, what you just said is like an unknown secret,
but it's not a secret because people during the shot
and stuff, they weren't showing up. They were at the
end of the era. That's when it all started. For Battle,
Tommy has kind of asked him to come back, come back,
and come back, even berating them at sometimes right, to
just come back because tonight there will be about twelve

(46:08):
or thirteen Yeah, yeah, so good for you. What's your
first name, Charles, So you'll be one of those guys
and you'll look around and says, you know, Steve was right,
maybe I'll be wrong, but eight thirty, if it's at
six o'clock, they're not gonna go six o'clock, right, six o'clock.
I think it would be a little bit better at
eight thirty.

Speaker 4 (46:26):
To me that that's tough for this fan base, especially
when you look at mcale and how what type of.

Speaker 2 (46:34):
Go ahead Trump thirty.

Speaker 3 (46:35):
Right now, I'm I'm in bed taking a nap before
the game, fifty four years old, and I gotta.

Speaker 12 (46:43):
Get up at four in the morning. So I'm hoping
for a blowout. And I see fans get mad. Oh
you don't stay till the end, and I'm like, I wait,
you know I would like to.

Speaker 3 (46:53):
But four o'clock comes earlier in the morning.

Speaker 2 (46:55):
Sure. No, great for your loyalty. Thanks for showing up,
Thanks for calling. Been listening to the show. This is
your first time I think you've called.

Speaker 3 (47:03):
I called before. I dressed in all years, every year.

Speaker 12 (47:07):
All the time, and I need to get your book
Lessen from Blue, So I need to get that.

Speaker 2 (47:11):
Okay, let me know. If you go to the games,
they'll try to get one to you and we'll talk.

Speaker 12 (47:17):
All right.

Speaker 2 (47:17):
Okay, good, no, good call, but very rare that you're
going to see guys who go to the football games
and in basketball games. I'm kind of tired of the
subject because well, now it's over the season's over and
we will know until next year. When this is kind
of like the Missouri thing. Show me before I go,
prove it to me before I go. It's always been

(47:38):
the case here somewhat.

Speaker 10 (47:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (47:39):
I just got a text. They've lost eleven out of eleven,
eight out of the eleven last season, right, And that's
another reason it's tough to support that when you don't
win enough.

Speaker 4 (47:50):
Sure, or the someone higher was horrible. Yeah, I mean
there's no denying that. In the rich Rod you had
one bad year, then a bowl year, and then he
gets fired, and then jad you had COVID mixed in there. Yeah,
and you're trying to overcome the summon issues, and he
was able to do that. But in those eight in
those eight years, let's say Arizona does win this weekend,

(48:10):
they win their bowl game. You're talking about potentially two
ten win seasons in a three year span, which for
Arizona football has never happened.

Speaker 2 (48:18):
Let me throw this at you, Okay, Let's say they
go to the Sun Bowl. Give you three bowls the
Sun Bowl. Does the fan base here from Tucson go
to that game? I think it goes, but not enough
to for it to look good on TV, right, right,
so you can talk about exactly. Yea, they have a
fan base. It's it's like when you hear the U

(48:39):
A U A for basketball. Yeah, those fans are already there.
They live at those places. Maybe not in the in
the Big twelve, not in the Big twelve, but in
the West Coast when they're playing. You can see him,
hear him in Washington, Ucla obviously because a lot of
those lums live in those areas. But they're not traveling
from Tucson, yeah to go there unless they take them Vegas,
I mean Vegas, and they so sun Bolt maybe maybe

(49:02):
not Vegas. They're going for New Year's Eve.

Speaker 4 (49:04):
Yeah, but you know what, it still isn't gonna look
in packflow on TV because now it's in the Raiders Stadium.
It's not all in the old UNL Vast stadium.

Speaker 2 (49:11):
So there and then La maybe La I think holiday
is the main okay holiday, and they'll go to San Diego.
They did the last time and they got shut out
and got crushed right uh to Nebraska yep. So and
I was thereas like it was brainy members it was
bad weather. But we'll see because they don't they don't
travel well either. And I'm sorry I'm saying this, but
that's the truth.

Speaker 4 (49:31):
Yeah, no, bad basketball is the one sport where, yes,
you have fans in other areas. Yes, but if it's
n C, DOUA, a tournament or big like, they do travel. Yeah,
they do travel and that's for the postseason. They wait
for that to get there. Yeah, okay, we're good with time, right,
ye a minutes? Oh, already, that's already. Did we go
lately long with Jay? We did about five minutes later.

(49:53):
I have to tell him who's the host of the
ship or me?

Speaker 2 (49:54):
It's me?

Speaker 3 (49:55):
I think.

Speaker 2 (49:58):
Okay, so we got three minutes. We'll take the calls.
On the other side, you're gonna have breaking news, a
lot of stuff, probably a lot of stuff going on
out of games yesterday and you know in the rankings
and all that women when are they playing. Well, we'll
get to that Tuesday. But this week is a busy guy,
us guys. We have a game tonight, we have a
press you guys have press conch tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (50:19):
With with your guy uh Danz and Seth Day good luck.

Speaker 2 (50:25):
And then the Thursday, obviously Thanksgiving Friday is a big
game at seven thirty yep, and then seven o'clock, will
get out of there by eleven ish, just the game
will end out. I was gonna say, get out one
o'clock if you're riding from there. And then the next
morning or next day we have basketball game at two.
I think it is. So you know, you're getting your moneys,

(50:45):
you're getting your money's worth. The free tickets. Yeah, free tickets.

Speaker 4 (50:49):
Yeah, in the cozy press box where it's you know,
fifty degrees outside and it's forty two.

Speaker 2 (50:55):
Instead, don't forget guys. You get to talk to the
players and the coaches. That's love. I love that they
love it too. I was gonna ask you you just
a graduate now, aren't you glad you picked this profession?

Speaker 3 (51:07):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (51:07):
Absolutely, I love it all my heart. No, I really do,
because I get moments like being right about eight and four.

Speaker 2 (51:15):
You have to because education, four years of education, years
of education.

Speaker 5 (51:20):
I had learned something and it showed finally. Yeah, and
you might even be wrong there because you're in a
good way, in a good way ninety three.

Speaker 2 (51:29):
Yeah. So they've been very impressive. You said you were
going to write, maybe write a story about did you
say this honor off the year.

Speaker 4 (51:35):
Yeah, I said it out there and I'm gonna try
to do it. Yeah, okay ahead of time before the
next game. But Bret Brennan for Big Twelve Coach of
the Year. I think the only other one is is
it Fritz or how do you say his name that
usually believe? Really Fritz? I think that would be the
other contender. I think if you look at BYU, they
were supposed to be what they did Texas Tack. They
were supposed to be that good Utah, they were supposed

(51:56):
to be that good Brennan in Houston. I think those
are the two programs that overachieved. And if you the
reason for Brennan, there were four and three and everybody's like, uh,
you know what, maybe they'll get to a bolgain. They
almost got to a Big twelve title game. Yes, mean
go the right way.

Speaker 2 (52:11):
Isn't it cool? And you guys are the graduates. You
guys go to school and all that stuff. It's cool
to have a issue succeeding what they're doing in Arizona,
succeeding with what it's doing.

Speaker 4 (52:21):
This is this weekend will be the biggest game in
Territorial Cup has had since twenty fourteen because they're both
nine and three. Well eight and three, we potentially go
to nine to three. But twenty fourteen, that was for
the right to go to the Pack call title game,
win the packwell South, and I remember going to that
game that that's the best game in the history of

(52:42):
that rivalry.

Speaker 2 (52:43):
You can, I don't care what side you are on.

Speaker 4 (52:45):
They've never had that much importance on okay, okay, national importance.

Speaker 2 (52:50):
Game came down to the wire.

Speaker 4 (52:51):
I think Arizona pretty much control the whole game, but
the final score was like forty two thirty.

Speaker 2 (52:56):
Five or something like that.

Speaker 4 (52:57):
It felt like a crowning moment for U of A
fans that have been through all the crap of U
of A football to finally win something.

Speaker 2 (53:04):
Eleven years ago. Yeah, okay, we gotta go get the
sign to get out of here. We'll come back with
breaking news.
