the coldest will be in Tucson, even outside in the winter.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
Yeah, it's beautiful you're outside, and yeah it's the sun
to kind of warm around a little bit.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Leaving the studios perfect. Yeah, well, we got the kids
here today. We'll talk a lot about what we've always
talked about football and basketball.
Speaker 5 (01:12):
One with Azy Desert.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Storm and swarm.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Storm whatever that thing is called dot Com and bye boy, Ray.
You can call him Ray, just don't call him late
for dinner. Never that, and we're going to talk to
a good show today. By the way, Chuck Culpepper one
of our guys from the Washington Post. He's headed off
to what cover one of the big games this weekend
for the Washington Post. We'll see where he's headed. And
then in the second hour, one of my great guys,
(01:37):
Kevin Singleton, a former U of A football player in
the late eighties, and his twin brother Chris.
Speaker 5 (01:43):
We all know those guys. People my age know those guys.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
And you know his leukemia battle back almost forty years
ago and now he's going through some stuff. I wanted
to have him on see what he's going to say
about what's going on with him now. So we'll talk
to him in the four o'clock hours. So it should
be an interesting story show story from from Kevin. He
loves lives up in Phoenix for high school coach, so
he's busy, busy doing stuff.
Speaker 5 (02:08):
Always wishing him the best.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Yes, he's he's you know what school, No, mountain, mountain something,
yeah something.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Desert maybe Kevin s Yeah, yeah, that's what it's said
on his bio.
Speaker 5 (02:20):
Okay, that's what it is then, because he's a linebacker,
coach or something.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
Well in general, just like mountain something, deesert something, you're
probably close to it in Arizona High school named in
Arizona Desert something, mountain something, it's yeah somethingrop and what right?
Speaker 5 (02:38):
Yeah? Okay.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
Those are the ones that like to rhyme their actual
like nicknames with the with the school name, Bash of Bears, Trophy, Bronco,
and then you get the Mountain View Eagles.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
Make it. Make it makes sense literation.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
You gotta have.
Speaker 5 (02:54):
That, all right, guys.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
So, uh no, you guess what's not gonna happen this
weekend Arizona football.
Speaker 5 (03:00):
They're gonna win or lose. They're not gonna lose.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
It's good and bad. Good and bad. They can't win,
but they also can't lose, right right, which is good.
You gotta regroup, find their way. We'll see what happens
on Saturday of next week when they're on the road
to Colorado.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
Colorado plays this week. I believe I would believe so
if not. Yeah, they'll also be on that by possibly. Yeah,
they're having issues. I think guys are maybe.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
I guess he got on the players last week saying
that they're already giving up or calling it in whatever
Sanders says. You know when he says everything, when he
says everything means something. I guess we'll see what happens.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
I heard that they had a transfer portal showcase something
like that. Players that were in the transfer portal from
like u C. L A or Penn State when the
places where they don't have a coach anymore, they're in
the portal obviously have that that timeframe when the coach
gets fired. And I think he had like some sort
of showcase or he did, yeah, meaning what did he
(03:58):
do like Colorado? Yeah, he held like kind of show
me what you got and we'll see what can happen.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
Oh, okay, they got Utah tonight tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Yeah that's gonna be tough one. That's gonna be a
tough one. Yeah yeah, okay, that's next week. We'll see
what happens next week about that. You a basketball starts
on Monday or plays again on Monday against Uh, they
always tough Mbrey Riddle riddle. So we saw, we saw
this part of the ticket package. And in fact, a
few of my friends this morning or yesterday we're talking
(04:32):
about this because it's part of the ticket package. And
they says, that's a that's a jip. You know, it's
just a bad game on a ticket package. And I'm
thinking that's part of the problem Arizona. All the good
games in the so called Great U scheduling, they're not
playing here, ye right, And Arizona has the Arizona.
Speaker 5 (04:50):
Fans here has have the bad games.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
Yeah, because even even now, the best non conference game
at home for Arizona is against Auburn cover. And you
don't know what they have, right because the coach coach
got coach retired. We'll see what he does with the
rest of his career. Maybe he's just gonna the rest know,
he's got a TV gig. He's got a TV gig.
Speaker 6 (05:07):
There you go.
Speaker 7 (05:08):
I feel like he's gonna be doing like some behind
the scenes coaching though for his son, right you.
Speaker 5 (05:12):
Would think so.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
I mean, I I think that with Nick Saban and Alabama.
I'm sure he's given tips and tricks yeah to Deborah
right right, And he's gonna stay put too.
Speaker 5 (05:22):
He's not gonna come back. He said that this morning.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
I saw that it'd be silly to come back to
the crap that's going on right now. I also just
don't think he's built for what the new era of colleturable.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
Yeah, built in what way? The way he wants to coach.
You can't do that nowadays.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
No, No, well that's why Parcells is not doing well.
Speaker 5 (05:43):
He's not gonna not Parcells. I'm sorry, chick.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Chick always get those guys. I've never seen him in
the same route together. Uh No, No, because it's just
what and why would you. I don't care how much
money you're making. He's making a lot more on SUP.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
That's st Yeah, because you make doing the commercials, you
make appearances on McAfee's show, and then you have college
game Day and that's just showing up and talking by right,
you know, trying to be funny and try to be funny.
But he also had a great just football insight. Oh no,
he's fantastic.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
He's really good at what he does on that and
people listen to me, he has some strength, some mojo. Yeah, Okay,
if anybody wants to call five two zero four one
six seventy four forty Nico, I'd appreciate a review of
my work today. I won't forget any of the kids days,
or maybe not even yours, Niko, So we'll see.
Speaker 6 (06:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (06:31):
I love to hear from I want to ask you
a question twice.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
N He's my spirit animal, all right.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
So so so with the bye week, I kind of
wrote an article about it. But what does Arizona have
to do to get back on track.
Speaker 5 (06:47):
For football? For football?
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Stop the run?
Speaker 8 (06:50):
Yeah, well that's numbers number one, two and three.
Speaker 5 (06:54):
We talked about that Monday, right or do whatever?
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Talking about it all week? Yeah, the last two weeks.
Let me tell you that offense needs to be more dynamic,
doesn't it. So not so much the deanc and dunks
and because he went twenty three, twenty four for twenty
six whatever.
Speaker 5 (07:09):
It was nice Brobo.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Yeah, and I'm gonna be the poop pooh or right
up the negative and Nelly, uh go down, feel a
little bit more, be more dynamic with the offense. Uh,
run better better? I mean this team has been better,
but but but showing it needs not enough. It needs
to be more revved up offensively, defensively. Right to your point,
(07:33):
stop the run. I think everything else is okay, right, yeah,
but but you don't know all about everything else because
you stop the run.
Speaker 7 (07:39):
Yeah, I think really is Ioways State probably exposed them
the most other than like, like you know, because BYU
they had the game plan.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
It was like just pound the rock.
Speaker 7 (07:47):
Same thing with you with Houston, it felt like so
And I mean I think the dbs are good too,
Like you know, I think that's probably the strength of
the defense.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
Well that's what you talked about this week, right one, yep, Yeah,
you gotta start learning that box.
Speaker 5 (07:59):
You have of a couple of not really even a couple.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
You have Chase Kennedy, Max Harrison, t Brown who can
make plays on the inside when they when they're able
to get to the line and get to the quarterback.
You have a really good defensive front in my opinion,
maybe a little bit undersized, but they still hold their ground.
And then the best part that's been talked about off
season throughout this season has been the secondary. That's by
(08:23):
trading stukes led by Dalton Johnson. Let them, let them
have a little bit of free range, let them make
the plays.
Speaker 5 (08:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
And then when when teams decided to run the ball.
You're already there. You're set, You're set. Yeah, have the number.
Let the DBS take control of the game in their way,
right like you say, stack the box and see. Well,
let's see how good they are. And up to up
to this point, who's been a really good passing team
against Arizona?
Speaker 3 (08:49):
I was state, did you say, yeah, I always stay
had some big plays.
Speaker 5 (08:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
See, I don't you guys. You guys give a lot
of credit to the first three games. And I get
that they won, but those three games were every riddle Houston.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
I mean not to that.
Speaker 5 (09:04):
You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
Everyone's all they're playing better.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
They looked better, Yeah they did, but they didn't play anybody.
Speaker 5 (09:09):
It's like that.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
We talked to Bob Baffort yesterday and I'm bringing up
with this analogy, and I follow the horses. It's like
a one hundred thousand dollars horse grinning against a fifty thousand dollars.
One hundred thousand dollars horse should have beat them, and
Arizona was the one hundred thousand dollars horse. Right now,
they're preasing against one hundred thousand dollars horses or above.
And we'll see what's happening. Well, they've lost two straight
and who knows about the rest because the rest of
(09:32):
them are one hundred thousand dollars horse horses.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (09:35):
Yeah, I mean I think that the pass defense looked
good against BYU. I mean they had two interceptions, right,
they also.
Speaker 9 (09:41):
But he was he's not a passer.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
But I mean same thing with Houston. Houston.
Speaker 7 (09:46):
I think they had a one or two maybe big
pass plays, but I can't remember anything past that.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
Hello, you're on the air nine the ball. Who's this?
I have not answered it. Here we go. Hello, you're
on the air nine of the ball. Who's this?
Speaker 6 (10:00):
It's your NBA minute guy?
Speaker 2 (10:02):
Okay, good? Got two games in? How much you have
in the next game.
Speaker 6 (10:06):
No, it's the overall thing of what's going on in
the NBA and gambling in general. You know, I'm an
ultra conservative and a woman. They were saying, it's it's
becoming a disease like opioids. You know, because I played
poker with a lot of different races and young people.
(10:26):
They're all about like betting on what are they going
to go for it on fourth downs? Yeah, it's an addiction.
We all know that. And there's there's only three places
in the whole country that are set up to just
deal with gambling. What do you mean by no addictions? Oh, okay,
gambling addictions.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
Well, are you talking about like two sons one of them?
Speaker 6 (10:47):
No, no, no, I'm not. I'm just talking in general. And
the young people are committing one out of ten or
commit that are addicted to gambling and problems. They're committing suicide,
you know, And people go, oh, that's not very much. No,
it isn't the big picture. Even one's too many. Google
(11:08):
ten okay, but but uh yeah, it says Nickel actually
called because I haven't heard him in like nine.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
Was he called Wednesday?
Speaker 5 (11:20):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (11:20):
You know him and Gabe have called in cool.
Speaker 6 (11:24):
He needs to just say hello, how you guys doing?
With his accent, everyone knows who it is. You know
who it is.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
He.
Speaker 6 (11:35):
Oh, here's the breaking news, Joel Embiid, because I heard
what happened in that game. He only scored four points
and one on He is done and cooked his knees.
He is over with that guy. And this is a
breaking news if he didn't because I know basketball and
knees because I have bad knees, and he's he's a
huge man, seven pounds. It's just a matter of when.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
Okay, well, but he's done. We'll keep an eye on.
Speaker 6 (12:04):
People saw the game. People who saw the game, they said, yeah,
he's told he couldn't even jump over a full a book.
That's what people said.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
He had no jumping. Okay, all right, how we're done. Thanks, Yeah,
my MBA correspondent.

the Ball with Steve Rivera on Fox Sports fourteen fifty eight.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Hey, welcome back to Wire on the Ball here on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty I'm Steve Rivera, your one, your ray.
Now on the phone, we have Chuck called Pepper the
Washington Post.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
Chuck, how you doing all right?
Speaker 2 (17:03):
How you doing?
Speaker 5 (17:04):
We're doing okay, We're doing okay.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
You've been seeing a lot of college football, I'm sure,
on the road and at home.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
And he's what's the biggest surprise.
Speaker 18 (17:14):
The biggest surprise is how volatile things are, I think,
and how you know, I expected some of it, but
I think the biggest surprise is just how week to
week things don't make sense, which is probably for the best,
much better than the sport was for most of its history,
(17:34):
where there were just certain empires and you kind of
a lot of what was going to happen.
Speaker 5 (17:38):
That's very true.
Speaker 18 (17:39):
And then and then right up behind that is how
good Indiana is. I mean, I knew I thought they'd
be good, you know, nine and three good, ten and
two good. But I went to the game at Oregon
and it's let's see, that was on note. That was
on October eleventh, so going on two weeks, and it
feels so impressive.
Speaker 5 (17:58):
Yeah, yeah, no, no question.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
I was just going to ask you if you've been
able to get out to Indiana, but you saw him there.
He's he's a story, right and only does his win
every place he's been, so it shouldn't be a surprise
to people who have followed him. Did you cover the
game or did you do something on him in Indiana?
Speaker 18 (18:16):
Covered the game, but kind of a mix, so yeah,
just on you know, gosh, they went in there and
they played better, you know, play to play football.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
It was.
Speaker 18 (18:29):
There was nothing flooky about it. It was I thought
they were the better team for that day, and probably
the more physical one, and it kind of you know,
as we all know, that's one of the hardest places
to play that there is, so it astounded me. I think,
you know, they made the playoff last year, they were
(18:51):
a breakthrough lost only once in the regular season. They
hired him when he was sixty two. That takes guts,
I think, I don't Maybe you can do that in
Indiana more than you could do it somewhere else. It
shouldn't matter, but.
Speaker 19 (19:06):
It does in a lot of places.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
And so I.
Speaker 18 (19:10):
Thought this year would be I don't know what. I
don't know how much I thought of them this year.
I didn't think they'd make the playoff again, and now
I think they will.
Speaker 4 (19:17):
What separates Indiana from the rest of the teams in
the country, even in the Big ten? And do you
think they're better than Ohio State right now?
Speaker 18 (19:25):
Yeah, I don't think I've quite sorted it out yet.
Definitely the offense, and of course we have an entirely
different quarterback this year, as is true in a lot
of places nowadays. But but the offense moved like I
don't like a group that had been together for longer
(19:47):
than it has. And then the defense, you know, we
were so busy looking at the offense and made these
long drives must you know, not three play drives that
had a big play in them, you know, long thought out,
many play drives, and it kind of made you forget
about the defense for a while, which was just marvelous
(20:09):
in the second half. They're really really good tacklers. So
the only thing I can kind of think about is
the attention to detail that he has learned to Kurt Signetty,
the coach has learned to implement must be just such
at such a rare level. You know, he's with Saban
for a few years. That doesn't necessarily make it so,
but must be at such a rare level. It's really
(20:32):
something to watch. I was equally, maybe even more astounded
about how badly they beat Illinois at home in September.
That score, I think it was sixty two to twenty four.
Maybe something like this just blew me away.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
Of all the coaches and you know, this businesses we
meet a lot of these guys throughout the years and
either become close to them or not close to them,
but we spend some time with them in the last
maybe ten years. And you've been doing this a long time.
What coach, what coach or two really impressed you? And
not so much coaching, but you know, he wins. The
win's the notebook if you will. He seems like he would.
Speaker 18 (21:11):
Yeah, I think so. And you know his first year
he kind of decorated it with these kind of you know,
the bravado. He had a lot of quotes that you
don't hear from coaches a lot of times because everyone's
afraid of firing up the opposition. Even Saban was afraid
of that. So yeah, he definitely would come into that.
(21:34):
Matt Campbell at Iowa State, I went into his office.
It's been about six years ago now, boys been there
a good while, and I just remember thinking, Okay, I
understand why this guy has had the amount of success
that he's had, you know, And I think at BYU,
you know, uh, Sataki is just just so got something
(21:58):
going there that I don't know. He's such a gentleman,
I think, and I still kind of value that ump
that uh trait, and he comes to mind too. I
haven't ever really sat down with him, But every time
I've been in the room, it's just just really impressive.
Speaker 5 (22:17):
What what about Utah?
Speaker 18 (22:21):
Yeah, again, that's another one. I I started to work
on a.
Speaker 6 (22:26):
Feature about him a few years ago.
Speaker 18 (22:28):
I just couldn't get enough access to do it. But
what what grabs me about him? Of course, the longevity
is incredible anymore, But what grabs me about him really
is what a regular human he seems to be, you know,
and I think still sort of has these other pursuits
and in you know, recreational things, uh, in life, And
(22:50):
of course that's a great He's living in a great
place for that, but that that, you know, just sort
of marked him as as kind of a somebody who's
not entirely obsessed with with the football, which you know,
we don't see too much.
Speaker 4 (23:07):
We've talked about Indiana kind of separating themselves in the
Big ten and just across the country, but there's a
couple of conferences that are kind of wide open right now, including.
Speaker 5 (23:16):
The Big twelve.
Speaker 4 (23:17):
Who do you see as probably a couple of front
runners right now in the Big twelve?
Speaker 18 (23:22):
I guess you'd have to say b Yu. But you
know what, I watched the Arizona game. And this is
what I was talking about at the beginning with volatility.
I wound up watching that BYU Arizona game, and you know,
as you know, BYU was was sort of right down
to the the uh that they didn't have that many
(23:43):
more chances to prevail in that game, and so they did.
And that to me sort a certain amount of know
how they're Arizona's you know, last two games, as you know,
if you just tilt them the other way, as would
be very easy to do, be a whole different season
we're talking about right now. So I do I love
(24:06):
the Conference. For one thing, I saw where it's TV
ratings are not, you know, up to where it wants
and relative to the others, even while TV ratings are
soaring in other places. But I love the Conference and
I I love watching it, and I guess i'd see
BYU at this point as as the maybe the one
(24:28):
at the very top with lots of contenders.
Speaker 4 (24:30):
What about in the SEC, because there's a couple right
now that are still undefeated, Texas A and m and Ole.
Miss just took its first loss, but you still have
Alabama Georgia with I think one loss of each and
then the Vandy team that's kind of on fire right now.
Speaker 18 (24:45):
See here's the case in point. Who in the world
can explain the opener in Tallahassee where Florida State. It
was one thing for Florida State to win that game,
but they kind of man handled them, and people were
kind of wondering about Alabama's whether they really had a
(25:08):
good enough competitive spirit. And now they have these last
four games, all ranked teams they've beaten, so they have
the most impressive I think resume, probably even ahead of
Iowa State in Indiana maybe he's close. So suddenly they're
they're an enthralling team in a way that they kind
(25:29):
of looked at them in that first game like they
were on the back.
Speaker 5 (25:33):
Heels, you know.
Speaker 18 (25:35):
And then A and M of course is going to LSU,
and I'm more intrigued by that than just about any
game in the SEC this year. And then I kind
of wish I was living in Nashville for the for
this fall because that bandy thing. You know, I watched
most of their LSU game last weekend on television.
Speaker 19 (25:55):
Not there but.
Speaker 18 (25:59):
Wholesome choice in there. It's just so fresh and it's
got a great energy about it, and it's kind of
making us rethink Vanderbild And then you throw in the
idea that the coach went there, and you know he
was a big baseball player before he moved over to football,
so Clark League. So it's I don't know, it's uh.
(26:22):
The Vandy thing to me is maybe right behind Indiana
in the country in what is you know, surprising and
appealing this year.
Speaker 2 (26:31):
It's funny you say and bring a Vandy because I
think if Arizona were to catch fire kind of like that,
that's kind of the fan fandom here in town.
Speaker 5 (26:39):
You don't see him, you don't see him until you
see him.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
And if they turned it around like that, that's what
would happen here because they're kind of ghosts right now.
But if you'd won in a great story type of
way that they would, they would show up back the
house and blah blah blah. And Arizona over the years
is still looking for that. And then here we go
with Vandy. It took New Mexico kid the quarterback to
go out there with his coach from New Mexico state
coach kill and now look at what's going on.
Speaker 18 (27:05):
Yeah, and well before that, he I guess he was
a year at the New Mexico Military in Roswell, near
the near the UFO thing and down down the street
from that, and and you know they won a national title.
And that's that's kind of when he got New Mexico
State's attention national junior college title. And so, uh yeah,
(27:29):
I think for for Arizona, and I can could probably
come up with a few other places where you're sitting
there saying we're not that far off anymore, because almost
nobody is that far off anymore. But you know, you
can with more volatility, you can put it together, you know,
more rapidly.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
Well, it's trying to find that magic in a bottle, right,
and where's that bottle? And where's the magic? Doubts with
that said, uh u c l A. They were they
were dog pooh for a while and now they're not
dog pooh anymore with an assistant coach and so magic there,
what's up with that? And that job situation? They just
stole a recruit from Washington with no coach.
Speaker 18 (28:10):
Oh now, and you know, if you ordered to bring
up anything to rival the mystery of Alabama at Florida State,
this is it the one you just brought up because
this is and they're going to Indiana yes weekend, so
so suddenly a big game and an intriguing game, you know.
And so when they beat Penn State, it just came
(28:34):
out of it defies all human understanding kind or at
the time it did. And because you remember the New
Mexico game, they lost thirty five to ten at home
to New Mexico, and that's what made yeah, you know,
that's what shook things up finally or not finally. It
had only been the middle of the second year for
Deshaun Foster, but that's the that's what got things going
(28:55):
in terms of the changes. And then I remember watching
their press conference after the penns win and this guy
sim Skipper gets up and I was sort of familiar
with him as an assistant in various places. Now he's
the interim head coach, and I just thought, good grief,
who wouldn't want to go oh and four or oh
and three whatever it was, and they were owing four.
That's right, oh and four, and then play for this guy,
(29:17):
I mean, just the whole spirit about him. And then
of course when we throw in Ucla Royalty at the
offensive coordinator spot, meeting new heiseels on. That kind of
makes it all the more. You would just sort of
just say what's going on there? And they went to
Michigan State and they won decisively. I know Michigan State's
(29:41):
having trouble this year, but that was still really something
given the situation and level where UCLA had been at
the outset.
Speaker 4 (29:50):
How much do you know about what could possibly come
for Florida for the teams like Arkansas or UCLA as
far as the next coach, because right now it seems
like there's a lot of Uh momentum And I'm going
to use that for this for this question here, Steve
Uh that lane Kiffin will be in Gainesville.
Speaker 18 (30:09):
Yeah, I actually have been in following the the Lane
Kiffin part of it. I can't figure out where that's
going and I can't figure out what he should do.
And I wonder if you're not wiser just to be
where you are, where you're you've become so appreciated at
this point, and and not go to Florida where you
(30:34):
can win. Lots of people have have proved that, or
people have proved that. Several people have proved that before,
and I think they've got a really good athletic director
and so on. But uh, there's just I don't know
the pressure there and the want by now is is
uh is pretty hard. I think I'm not sure. I'm
(30:55):
not sure. The old in the old ways, we'd say, well,
of course you'd go to it, but I'm not sure
it's you know, really any better to go do that.
At this point, we're up to nine firings or dismissals
or whatever you'd call them now the one thirty six
from an FBS. We're up to nine in the season.
(31:17):
You know, since the season began starting off with Virginia
Tech and that was very early in the season and
so on. So you know, people, I am wondering who's
going to.
Speaker 3 (31:28):
Fill all these spots?
Speaker 19 (31:29):
People are you know, the.
Speaker 18 (31:31):
The money's there more than and the money issues are there.
And then the big big idea that you can pull
a Vanderbilder in Indiana and perform yourself quickly and with
the right coach. I think it's making people want to
act more quickly. And so you know, I'm kind of
there's a lot of spots someone like for example, James
(31:51):
Franklin could go to.
Speaker 2 (31:53):
Right right, let me say this, Uh, the COVID was
about well, not about it.
Speaker 5 (31:58):
It was five years ago. We had games, not in person.
Speaker 2 (32:01):
I know that Jay and I talked about this a lot,
and I'm sure you wrote about it. There's schools are
gonna be losing money, there's no attendance, there's no nothing
in how they're going to manage to survive athletically financially.
Right in the finances in athletics. But here you're firing
coaches mid season, owing them Bouku bucks fifty million plus.
(32:21):
Where in the world is this money coming from, in
addition to having to pay him twenty million whatever every year.
Speaker 18 (32:28):
You know what I'm always wondering about that I should
figure out how to do a story on what it
would be really hard to do. Is is why I've
never understood.
Speaker 6 (32:38):
Completely why someone.
Speaker 18 (32:41):
Who is extravagantly wealthy joses yes, you know, being a booster, yes,
to spend money on a buyout for someone like Kimbo
Fisher something like that. And the only thing I can
say is that it really tells you how deeply in
the heart people feel these things, and how they want
(33:03):
their place to be, you know, they want their place
to be special, and how much it matters to win,
you know, just because it's your school. So you know
the idea that you know they always tell you when
they have these buyouts like Franklin's.
Speaker 6 (33:18):
Bigger, Well, you know the boosters are going.
Speaker 18 (33:21):
To handle it in some way. And that's still mind
boggling to me sort of the amount of it. So yeah,
it's a really really strange American thing, I think.
Speaker 5 (33:33):
Sure, no, I hear.
Speaker 6 (33:35):
You know.
Speaker 3 (33:35):
I had the same question.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
I mean, who would think you graduated from ex school
and you think that you want to be part of it,
And that's kind of having an ego and hey I
helped save the program or whatever, but that that would
be a good story and you can find them, you know,
if they're willing to pay guess what they're willing to
do talk.
Speaker 18 (33:52):
Yeah, yeah, and you know it did run across my mind.
I went to Virginia, which, by the way, you know,
as you know, we kind of lose our rooting interest
when we go into sports riding and so on. But
it's you know that that's another surprise this year that
has really left in a in a short time, you know,
to a ranking top twenty ranking. But I was thinking
(34:15):
if I had a billion dollars would I use some
of it to pay off a coach to get rid
of him when he wasn't winning. And I just thought,
I don't think so. I think i'd like go live
in Paris or something. I don't think I would, Chuck.
You know now I know where to find it. Now,
I know where to find you.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
But you know, if I had a billionaire and what
I do I disappear, baby, I'd say, Chuck.
Speaker 5 (34:38):
You guys know you baby?
Speaker 6 (34:40):
Yeah, exactly, Chuck.
Speaker 2 (34:42):
I was good to talk to you, man. We'll see
you and talk to you as we get closer to January.
Speaker 6 (34:48):
You too, and thanks so much.
Speaker 5 (34:49):
It's great to talk to you.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
Yeah, be well, Chuck. Chuck Culpepper from the Washington Post.
Have you ever read him? No, fantastic writer, shows pictures,
paints pictures.
Speaker 5 (34:59):
Just a fantastic to writer. Met him while he covered
college basketball for all these years.
Speaker 4 (35:04):
He wrought have an interesting point about getting paid and
being appreciated as a coach. I think there's a there's
a bit of a duality there. Yeah, And we've seen
it go both ways where someone gets paid big while
still being appreciated.
Speaker 5 (35:17):
Yeah. Yeah, very rare, very rare. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
Yeah, and appreciated and vice versa. You know where you're
getting paid a lot and you kind of appreciate that
you've got this job. I'm Franklin was like that, you
know the one that say Saban kind of poop pooed
for him because they said they didn't appreciate it. You
appreciate you. He's getting paid a wealth generation money. If
he didn't coach again, he'd be well off. Good, his
(35:42):
kids will be well off, their kids will be well off,
and continue, continue.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
But he's not that kind of guy to just lay down.
He's he's the competitor. He's the course, the teacher. You
you have master. You ever met a coach that isn't?
Speaker 2 (35:56):
I don't believe. So that's who they are. Yeah, that's
because the competitive want to make a difference.
Speaker 6 (36:01):
Open.
Speaker 4 (36:01):
Actually, actually there is why I'm a going to say,
who but I have met one?
Speaker 5 (36:04):
Okay, off the air, this turns off. Yeah, let's go.

on the Ball with Steve Rivera on Box sportsporteen fifty.
Speaker 2 (40:17):
Hey, welcome back to win the ball here on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty on Steve Rivera, You're one, you'reay. We
start to calls like we did all week. We had
a ton of calls almost every day. Mon Nico, we're
waiting for you, Nico, Gabe, give us something. Vic Well,
Dodgers to Rodgers.
Speaker 9 (40:35):
Yeah, Dodgers game at five oh six or four cap
so right after we leave. Yeah, yeah, I'm not sure
they'll be part of your breaking news. It sure will be, okay,
pretty real realistically the Dodgers. I want the Blue Jays
to win, though.
Speaker 5 (40:52):
I think that's pretty much everyone.
Speaker 3 (40:54):
Yeah, except for the most part.
Speaker 2 (40:55):
Except for j Vic. Yeah, I'm going with the Toronto. Yeah,
going with Tron two to one. I haven't bet it yet.
Speaker 7 (41:02):
I'm not sure if I will, but I think it's
tough just because you know, you see you see the
Blue Jays and how they played in that last series
he was against the Mariners, you know, where it's like,
you know, really good pitching can kind of shut them down,
and it did in those first two games, and their
bats kind of went cold a little bit in those
first two games too.
Speaker 3 (41:18):
But when they turn it on, I mean they're good.
Speaker 5 (41:20):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:21):
And that's the funny thing is Dodgers have found their
pitching right, the starters and all that stuff. But historically,
well not historically, if you have that issue all year
or most parts of.
Speaker 3 (41:32):
Your eventually catches up the Yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
But they found a way to fix it, and you know,
either they're healthy or they kind of went with a
different rotation.
Speaker 6 (41:39):
No.
Speaker 7 (41:39):
And I think a really interesting part that they've done
so far as putting Kershaw in the bullpen, just because
you know, it was as a Giants fan, it was
always really an easy joke to make, but he always
had those games where that he would just absolutely blow
in the in the playoffs, and you know it'd be
like maybe like a pivotal like Game three, year Game two,
and so you know, putting it in the bullpen and
(42:00):
kind of you know, have a you know, you have
an all star caliber kind of arm, you know that
you can rely on. But and you don't give them
the opportunity to really mess up the whole game as
opposed to when he started. So yeah, I mean, interesting
stuff that they've done with their bullpen. But see if
see if it will work out. I guess you go,
you go.
Speaker 4 (42:21):
I have the Dodgers and five Okay, I think I
think Toronto will win one for.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
This, for the for the city, for the country, the country,
I guess. And who better than Canada. It's perfect, great
scenario given the Trump stuff with Canada now and US
against him then against us whatever.
Speaker 5 (42:38):
I'm not saying us, you know what I'm.
Speaker 3 (42:40):
Saying, right, No, it's it feels like it's like that,
you know, that little.
Speaker 7 (42:43):
Rivalry with Canada has kind of been brewing all years
since the hockey things exactly.
Speaker 3 (42:47):
It's just strange how that happens.
Speaker 7 (42:49):
Yeah, yeah, I mean, good storylines though, fun makes it fun.
If you're not like a fan of one of the
two teams, we'll.
Speaker 5 (42:58):
These teams.
Speaker 4 (42:59):
I want the Marlins to go.
Speaker 5 (43:04):
We talked about that earlier this week.
Speaker 2 (43:05):
I think it would have been a West Coast thing
and nobody east would give it crap.
Speaker 4 (43:10):
Yeah, you know now it's the Canada. Yes, say it
means a little bit more painting. Hello, you're on the
air nine the ball?
Speaker 15 (43:16):
Who Vic?
Speaker 3 (43:19):
Vic?
Speaker 6 (43:19):
You?
Speaker 19 (43:19):
Where you at? What I just caught it? Talk to
you three haters?
Speaker 6 (43:23):
That's why?
Speaker 2 (43:24):
What bar?
Speaker 5 (43:25):
Are you sitting there waiting for the TV to show up?
Speaker 19 (43:28):
He No, I'm at home because I'll be cutting and
throwing stuff.
Speaker 3 (43:33):
And it's real. That's why I have to bind and.
Speaker 19 (43:36):
Don't be my way, but don't go my way. I
have to stay home.
Speaker 5 (43:40):
Is this g on the line.
Speaker 3 (43:43):
That's why he's here.
Speaker 19 (43:44):
I just wanted to say hi to the three haters.
Speaker 4 (43:47):
And uhs, I said, Dodgers right now?
Speaker 7 (43:50):
Dogs?
Speaker 19 (43:52):
Yeah? But you said you're rooting for the Jays.
Speaker 3 (43:55):
Yeah I did not.
Speaker 5 (43:56):
I didn't. I didn't.
Speaker 19 (43:58):
Vic.
Speaker 5 (43:58):
You're you're overreacting. I got a therapist for you.
Speaker 19 (44:03):
Hey, I went to the gym this morning. I've been
walking around this house like a cage animal. Actually, my
buddy called and said, uh, what would you take Arizona
Final four tickets or Game seven tickets? And I couldn't answer.
I'm telling you I can't.
Speaker 3 (44:20):
I'm torn.
Speaker 2 (44:21):
Well let's see here, let's don't go back on that. Okay,
game seven, You'll have another Game seven some other time.
With the Dodgers, it's been you are a little heat though.
When when the Wildcats.
Speaker 19 (44:33):
Made it to the final four, Okay, you convinced me
I'll take Final four tickets.
Speaker 2 (44:37):
Did you do know when you be another twenty five
years later whether you're gonna get back.
Speaker 19 (44:42):
Hey, it took nineteen eighty eight to two thousand for
the Dodgers.
Speaker 2 (44:46):
Also, so yeah, it just makes me think that you
need better teams to follow.
Speaker 19 (44:52):
Oh boy, that is no lie. And I'm gonna be
one of those guys that starts rooting for Duke and
basketball and Oklahoma City and NBA.
Speaker 3 (45:03):
And one imagine how the Duke.
Speaker 2 (45:07):
Fans feel because they're a bigger disappointment given their expectations
every year.
Speaker 3 (45:13):
Oh that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (45:14):
In Kentucky when Cala Party was there, yeah, oh heck yeah,
you know, so you.
Speaker 5 (45:19):
Know, pretty easy You'll be fine, You'll be fine.
Speaker 3 (45:23):
Okay, here we go.
Speaker 19 (45:24):
It's almost game time. Baby. Hey, I just want to
call it the high guy.
Speaker 5 (45:28):
All right, everybody, last week Friday, he's part of the family.
Part of the.
Speaker 2 (45:33):
Family, family Friday. Like I said, last on Saturday. Right,
you've been on Saturday. Right, You see his hair had
a little beer hair.
Speaker 5 (45:41):
You know, he's not.
Speaker 2 (45:42):
He's gonna be like Rapunzel. He's not gonna he's not
gonna cut it until Arizona football wins.
Speaker 4 (45:48):
Except instead of blond, it's gonna be a Dodger blue
Dodger blue flowing hair.
Speaker 3 (45:53):
There you go.
Speaker 4 (45:56):
I should have asked him that if the Dodgers were
to win, what do you do that?
Speaker 8 (46:00):
Yeah, give him a tattoo his tattoo, tattoo tattoo. Huh,
that'd be pretty interesting, little Dodger with the championship.
Speaker 4 (46:10):
Jay, I think I think I'd consider getting a tattoo
of Arizona one championship in basketball football.
Speaker 5 (46:15):
I wouldn't doubt that.
Speaker 3 (46:16):
I would, without a doubt you would. Yeah, Yeah, he's
kind of a crazy dude.
Speaker 5 (46:21):
I actually I don't think I would for basketball.
Speaker 4 (46:23):
Because there's a better quote unquote better chance that they'd
go and win it again, whereas Arizona football I'd be
a miracle either way.
Speaker 2 (46:32):
Yeah, one one gets a little too crazy in the
in the game. Since you're watching the game and you
don't get that bad, I'm just saying, like with you.
Speaker 3 (46:41):
Oh yeah for the Iowa State game. Yeah, dude, you
should have seen me for b Yu is so much worse.
Speaker 5 (46:47):
Yeah, he just did.
Speaker 3 (46:47):
Yeah he did.
Speaker 4 (46:49):
So I was like, you didn't see me at the
game of all the time, my mom mannered at the game,
right right.
Speaker 2 (46:54):
Well, did you notice what the chuck said about now
that you're in the business, you can you can't you
know't root for you don't have teams.
Speaker 5 (47:02):
Yeah, I still root for teams.
Speaker 4 (47:03):
I'll find them as long as I'm not covering, but
I'm not writing on a team.
Speaker 5 (47:08):
I'll find a team to root for. Sure.
Speaker 2 (47:10):
You got Denver, I mean Monday Monday, him and Troy. Yeah,
there's no way in hell they were that on Monday.
If they lose, I think there's a chance. I really
do think there's a chance that the Cowboys go and
beat them.
Speaker 5 (47:27):
Yes, maybe there's a chance, But if they do, that's that.
Speaker 4 (47:30):
Game took Ale to beat the Giants. The offense was
very stagnant for three quarters. Well, they were kind of
like b y you here.
Speaker 2 (47:39):
Yeah, they cannot They didn't panic, they didn't do anything.
They just went and did their business and they said,
we got this guy, don't worry about it.
Speaker 5 (47:46):
By u.
Speaker 4 (47:47):
They executed their game plan. It took a couple of
miracle plays for the Broncos to get back in that.
Speaker 7 (47:55):
Yeah, But I mean it took a miracle play for
the Giants to keep that lead for for as long
as they did to you know what I mean, Like
they get the deflection, like both teams back to back
deflection catch touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (48:03):
You know what I mean exactly, That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 5 (48:05):
It was for the most part, the Giants dominate that game.
Speaker 3 (48:08):
Yeah, it was hard to watch. I mean that defensive line, man,
I think.
Speaker 4 (48:11):
That's what I was cussing up a storm. That's why
I have to watch Broncos games at home.
Speaker 3 (48:15):
Yeah, or I just.
Speaker 5 (48:16):
Don't watch it all.
Speaker 3 (48:18):
I gotta watch big Niners games at home. I can't
go out for it.
Speaker 1 (48:21):
Man.
Speaker 5 (48:21):
You guys would have to be reformed.
Speaker 3 (48:24):
Reformed, I don't think. I don't think you can take
the Niners love out of me. I ain't gonna lie.
Speaker 5 (48:29):
A tough life. Now, it's a great day to be
a spur.
Speaker 2 (48:33):
Yeah, hey, dude, I was gonna text you I saw
that game. He was They were fantastic. Women was fantastic.
Speaker 4 (48:40):
He's making the moves of Steph Curry at seven five.
Speaker 2 (48:43):
He was fantastic that night. It is insane. There have
been some fantastic games in the last three games undergo
back to back double overtime games. So starting to see
last night Golden State beats beat Denver Nuggets, they beat
Lakers with.
Speaker 5 (48:56):
Aaron Gordon fifty point game.
Speaker 3 (48:58):
It was.
Speaker 2 (48:59):
It was nice the whole last three games, and then
you have the gambling thing to kind of poop with
it all. But and then the guy's talking about it, You.
Speaker 4 (49:07):
Think, yeah, I got I got home last night, Lee,
and oh yeah, I got home from covering soccer last
night expecting to watch the highlights, and that was. They
talked about it for fifteen minutes. I said, I don't
want to hear about this. I want to I want
to know what happening. It's going to probably hit harder too.
As they continue on. He might not take tomorrow, but
it might be eventually. I think that's what that is.
(49:30):
One of the questions I listened to last night is
this the iceberg? Or is this the tip of the ice?
That's yeah, I saw tip and well he was he said,
it's not just an iceberg. It's a tornado. It's a hurricane.
We don't know what this is. It some kind of
natural disaster that no one's seen. The christion is how
was Gilbert man man?
Speaker 5 (49:50):
She stuffed it in? Yeah? Is he bringing the bag?
Speaker 3 (49:53):
Oh? That was yesterday? But yeah, yesterday.
Speaker 5 (49:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (49:55):
No.
Speaker 7 (49:55):
I had a feeling because I was like I was
thinking about it, Like I woke up to the to
the news, right, and I was going to do some
stuff for class pretty early in the morning with one
of my friends, and I was like, you think about it, right.
He got caught up, got released the same day the
show him talked about it and then madea got a
partnership with Skip Bayless. It's like he only started to
get better after he got arrested, and it's like, how
(50:17):
does that work? And it's like, well, he probably said
a few things in that in that room.
Speaker 2 (50:24):
Yeah, and he said, you know what was it, snitch?
I can't remember what you said coming out of informant,
No coming out of the out of the thing.
Speaker 3 (50:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (50:33):
Something he came on something between three months ago when
he got yeah it is that's what I said back
in middle school or you going to middle school? Okay,
over to the east side, baby.
Speaker 8 (50:46):
A minute, even rough, just a little bit crazy okay, yeah,
mean streets of bast side.
Speaker 5 (50:52):
Yeah right, I was the tamer of the crazy on
the east side.
Speaker 3 (50:55):
Yeah yeah, to check in with one when he went
over there, right right?
Speaker 2 (50:59):
You believe it to him? Okay, he was what did
you say? You were like five whatever it was, and
you were the center.
Speaker 4 (51:06):
Oh yeah, I was like I was a taller, one
of the tallers in middle school to start, and then
people hit their gold spurts.
Speaker 5 (51:13):
I didn't.
Speaker 4 (51:14):
So I'm a I'm a guy with big man skills
but the size of a guard man, and I was
screwed from.
Speaker 5 (51:20):
There on out. I'm a better shooter now I'll say that. Okay, Wimby, Okay,
thank you. Let's believe it. Okay, we gotta go.
Speaker 2 (51:28):
Let's go come back and talk about breaking news, and
then we're gonna get ahold of Kevin Singleton
