and some older guy says to me, yeah, I think

is it a good thing? Is it's just a thing. Well, cuddly,

you know, it just doesn't seem feasible. Timing was, yeah,

you know, it's a Friday. There's really not any football,
you know for the you know, to watch. There's a
Colorado game comes out at four thirty, but would be
leaving the tailgate within a half hour forty five minutes.
So we thought about just going there anyways, but say
you want, let's let's just leave it packed up.

For the week. We're gonna go over to Brother John's and.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Try that makes sense, and then you just school park
and go to game. Should be a good game. I mean,
come on to spreads one and a half, I think
it was. It flipped like it flipped again. So it started.
It started at the beginning of the week, Kansas State
by one and a half. On Monday. Middle of the week,
it went to Arizona by one and a half. It's
back to Kansas State by one.

and it's moved like that twice and you know you're
talking three points. Yeah, And I mean that's what happened
last week with the with the Buffalo game, because up
on Monday, the Bills were favored by point and a half,

favorite bad point a game that we both hit barely,
but he hit it prevented us from going oh man

It was a tough week last week. Yeah, this week's

think it. I think it's settled back at three and
a half again. I wonder why I went to seven.

and then at four seventeen, we're going to have I
think the the athlete of the game, you know, the
highlight of the game, Marquees Flowers.

In the last two years, Yeah, you know there were
bigger games well in the last let's say, just two
years with with Brennan, three years with Fish, that's the five,

was that probably saying that the last game that was
even closer to being this big was the twenty fourteen
U of AASU game.

He said, the last biggest game in the last ten years.

I'm like, I was so stop, David, Yeah, come on, man,
oh no, I'm gonna look as.

not even close. It's not even probably in the top ten.
Is it a big game now? Yes, it's a big
game for Brent Brennan. You know, it's a big game
for anybody who's got the over five and a half
wins and the Cats. But you know, things, things don't

end if they if they you know, if they don't
win this game. I think going into the season, everybody
expected him to lose this game. People think they're going
to Arizona should win it now because of how Kansas
Is performed in the first two games.

But this is now a huge game.

Speaker 5 (05:58):
It's it's it's a it's a meaningful game for for
Brennan and for the you know, if Arizona's three and oh,
now people start to get excited about the about the team.
But from the standpoint of one of the most important
games in the last ten years.

Yeah, So let me ask you.

You may have just mentioned as I look for his tweet,
I can't plan it on his twitter. So, uh, is
this a line one and a half which is almost
a picking game because Kansas City is still unknown and
they're just not good or Arizona's close because they kind.

I mean, I mean, look what Kansas State has done.

You know what they're they're one and two.

They beat South Dakota or notth Dakota, not State, so
it wasn't one of the good teams. And then they
lost to Army, who lost to Charlton State the week before.
So you know, I want to ask, uh, you know
this beat Rider, you know, what the hell is going
on over there? Clearly not what people were expecting coming

into the season with Kansas State, So what are they now?

Speaker 4 (07:01):
The thing that you hear when you're an Arizona fan
is you.

Speaker 5 (07:04):
Know they're going to show up and play their best
game of the year and and everybody's going to lose
their minds if Arizona loses this game, because they should
meet these guys.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
Yeah, but we don't know a lot about Arizona.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
We don't. We don't not against the better team than
the place.

Speaker 5 (07:18):
I mean, what happened Saturday was what were supposed to happen, thought,
and as if you're an Arizona fan, you wanted to
happen and what And you know what, I what I
thought I talked about was that what what what you
wanted was for Noah Faida to go out and play
a really good game, get some confidence, see some things,
and iron some things out from the week before, which

it looks like they did that. But whether those things
are going to work against Kansas State, it's a whole difference.

Because the quality of a post is matter. So you're
I'm going to label you as the typical Arizona fan,
you know, die when bah blah. So do you feel
good what you've seen over the last two Of course
you do, But how good do you feel?

Oh I'm still waiting to see Yeah, okay, yeah and
then yeah, we don't know. You know what I the
conversation I had with somebody on Tuesday was they've done
what they were supposed to do. Now I'll even say
that they beat Hawaii worse than I expected them to.

I think that line was seventeen and I wasn't taking
it right. I thought if they won twenty four to
seven or something like that, that that was all you could expect.
You know, they beat the hell out of them, And
I told you I went to watch some of the
game after the fact and watching it on TV, I've
realized it looked better on TV than it did. That
what exception, and that's your quarterback, right and he yeah,

he still didn't have a great game. Defensively, they dominated,
they punished him. So they've done what you would have
wanted them to do in order for you to believe
that they're a good team.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
Right, Well, let me see you last year at this time,
we were in the same spot. I mean we as
an observing the fan. They won their first two games,
but the style points and I talked about seven points
all the time.

Speaker 3 (09:03):
We're not good, not great for good and you're not
for the Hawaii again.

And you're thinking, you're thinking, well, the New Mexico game, remember,
and then last year, yeah, you and you're thinking.

I remember walking out of the stadium.

I said this a few times and fans were saying, Oh,
this continues, We're gonna suck, and I'm thinking, kind of relax.

Well, no, they were right.

They were they were right.

Right, So at least you don't have that.

Speaker 5 (09:22):
You don't have, right, you feel like there's not you
haven't seen anything bad yet. No, right, you saw Fafita,
not being all for Feeda in that first game.

Speaker 4 (09:30):
But then.

Speaker 5 (09:33):
You know, and again I get the competition, but he
did what you would expect him to do against that
level of.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
Competition, right right, And maybe it'll it wasn't a struggle.
Maybe it won't, but this will be the test. And
if even if they win twenty twenty one, whatever, just
what And we have that discussion with Ricky and he's
a coach, right, as.

Speaker 4 (09:54):
Long as we win, just win the game.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
Just win the game. And now that's how it is
the rest of the way, right.

You know, just win the game. Just win the game,
no matter who you're playing, Just win the game. You know.

Uh So you know where I'm at is I'm still
you know, let's see how good they are.

I think we find out a lot more in this
game coming up than you know, any of the two
games previously. But going in, you feel like they've done
the stuff that they were supposed to do, and so
they've got a chance to win this game. And well,
I'd be a little surprised if they don't a little
bit because I think you know, what Kansas State has

showed is that Arizona, you know, has a good chance
to win this game.

Speaker 4 (10:36):
Yeah, so I don't know. We'll see what happened and
that that.

Speaker 5 (10:39):
You know, the guys, the guys that I'm around me,
that I talked to, are all kind of in the
same place. So let's see what happens in this game,
and let's not make a judgment until we until we
know that. And we've all been waiting for this game
since the start of the season. We've all been saying
we're not going to know anything about them until this game.

Well, I'm looking forward to the game because they again
I want to see you know, deserves one to have
a chance to have a good season.

Think even if they lose, but it's a tough game,
hard fought game. You know, you have a chance to
win in the fourth Quartering you lose the game, the
season is not over. There's still you know, there's a
lot of games. Look, they're not Oklahoma State, right, so
but if they win, you know, you got a week off,
then they're then there on the road.

Maybe by the time they come back. People were fired
up about this team.

Yeah, yeah, I think what do you think the fans?

We went to the tailgate.

At the tail end of our tailgate, my grandson ran
out in front of some kids playing football, got smashed,
took some air and broke his collar bone. Oh it
was a two year old. Yeah, yeah, and so we
at about So that's why Adam wasn't at the right thing.

About five thirty or so, he was in an ambulance
headed to UMC and we were with him.

Speaker 4 (12:48):
We went, you know, went to MC.

Speaker 2 (12:50):
How was that scene at the tailgate? Was it crazy
that where'd the ambulance go in?

Speaker 4 (12:57):
No?

Speaker 5 (12:57):
No, what happened was you know, he got knocked down,
he was crying. We were a little worried he might
have a concussion. So Adam had left for the game,
his dad had left for the game, and so my
wife took him, and my wife and my sister took
him over to where the paramedics were over by Michale
And it was there that they decided to you know,

(13:19):
to send him to the hospital. And because of the
traffic and all that stuff, and they thought it was
best to put him in an ambulance, and so they
did and that by that time Adam came back and
he wrote in the ambulance with them, So he wasn't
He went by ambulance to UH to TMC.

Speaker 4 (13:35):
Uh. He fractured collar bone. Uh. He's fine, He's okay.
There's nothing.

Speaker 5 (13:40):
There's all you can do, right, there's nothing you can
do about it. It's just got a heal. He was
in some pain for a couple of days. Took a
lot of motrin and and kids tail and all, and
he's running around. Adam broke his arm. He fell off
the bed and broke his arm when he was like
three months. I'm glad.

I'm not a gonsolate you guys take.

Well, all three of my kids have had broken bones
at a young ages.

is going on with Kansas State?

Yeah, it's uh, you know, it's I wish that it
were easy to explain.

I wish that I had a good grasp on it, but.

Unfortunately, I think we're all, uh, we're all just trying
to figure it out ourselves.

It's been, uh, it's it's.

Definitely been a little bit of a whiplash from the
past three weeks.

Are the are the I mean, is there I don't
know how much you can tell about, you know, what
the fans are saying back over there, But I mean
there had to be high There's had to be expectations, right,
But you know, are they in a panic yet?

What's everybody thinking so far?

No, the panic fans panic sets in pretty quickly.

Speaker 14 (19:55):
Yes, especially especially when the expectations were as high as
things were. And I you know, is a big thing
that that that case they coaches and players have been
talking about is accountability. And one thing that I kind
of had to take accountability in is I'm part of,
you know, not a huge part, but part of the
reason why those expectations were high. I said that they

were going to be good. I thought they were going
to be good. I'm not the only one, but yeah, no,
it's been you know, people people freaked out after the
Iowa State loss, but then once a day or two passed,
they were able to kind of excuse that one away
or whatever. But then when they came out flat against
North Dakota and and barely won that, uh, you know,

the fear was there. And then, as I described it
in one of my stories, it was like the benefit
of the doubt was still there before the Army game,
and then now it's it's pretty much all doubts at
this point.

Well, well know, you know, we know a big twelve
to not do a media poll. But so let me
ask you where would you have ranked them if there
had been a media poll.

Speaker 14 (21:06):
I probably would have picked them first. I felt I
felt really, really good. I felt that, you know, another
year for for Avery Johnson to take another step forward.

I really liked what they had coming back on defense.

Speaker 14 (21:22):
I I thought that the transfers, one of which was
was your guys's gunner Maldonato, I thought was going to
be and still could still. I mean, it's still early,
and that's a good thing to remember. But I, you know,
I I just think that maybe some things that we
papered over, problems with the offensive line, you know, the

secondary being pretty pretty young and inexperienced, have have not
have had been problems.

And then there have been other things that.

People did not anticipate being problems that that are now problems.
So it's a it's it's not a it's not a
super happy place right at the Veneer Football Football Complex.

The funny thing is, you know, we were both Jay
and I are both the newspaper guys long term, a
long time ago, and I think the best time to
be covering a team is on the uprise. The second
best time is when they're on the down rights. You
can have a lot to write about.

Right. Did they spend a lot of money into transfer portal?

I mean for uh, you know, for case state, for
what what case state can do. I think that they
did a good amount. One thing the climate has talked
about is that in general, he would rather dedicate the
majority of that nil now rev share money h for

to keep guys around, Yes, yes, that you know, and
try to keep that player attention, which is you know,
it has been a winning formula for them, you know,
since he got here. And so there were you know,

his turnover problem that he had last year, and that
was a big thing that he worked on. The way
I've described it is, Avery Johnson has played well enough

for this team to be three and oh okay, the
problems could he.

Now could he have played better?

Sure, Like I'm not saying he's been perfect, but I
would not if I was listing, if I was ranking
the problems him, his his performance himself. He was really
good versus Army. I mean he was, he was, he

He had some million nice steep balls. Problem is he
was only on the field for three minutes in the

second half. Wow, it's just hard to I know, I mean,
it was just hard to have a big impact on
the game when you only get two drives and thirteen
plays in two full quarters.

So do the fans, you know, because we know that
here right Arizona fans, you lose a couple of games
and they lose their minds and disappear and they're pissed.
And the do the fans stick with the team? Ten

Yeah, I mean, I mean lost their minds. Has definitely
been happening, especially if you look on social media. It's
it's tough to tell the real impact because the you know,
the Army game was sold out. You know that was
not you know, that was a normal situation and now
the way that it's set up, obviously they go they

go to Tucson tomorrow, they have a bye week next week,
and then they play UCF at home the week after.
So I do worry what things are going to look
like if they if they lose at Arizona and then
they have, you know, two and a half weeks to
just kind of sit and stew on on that.

It's not going to be good. I mean, it just isn't.
Do I think that they.

Will unravel completely? I don't think so, not at least
not yet. But I don't think anyone is happy or
satisfied with how things have started.

you know, a calmness that's he's never he's never wanted

he talks about you know, keeping you know, keeping togetherness,
you know, kind of staying in the course. You know,
he said, this is you know, this is a crisis
for sure, but it's you know, we don't need to panic.
And in some respects, I you know, I agree with them.

That they come out and they play well and they
win tomorrow, then you know, you have a you're really
sitting in a similar spot than that you were in
twenty twenty two in case they won the Big Twelve,
which is they had they had a couple of Big
Twelve losses. They lost a game at home to a
Tulane team that ended up being pretty good, but then

they still ended up going to the Beigital Championship game
and beating TCU and unview TCU team in the Bagel Championship.
So you know, if you you beat Arizona, you're still
all of that is still available to you technically, But
the problem is it's just there's just been no indication
that that gear is available.

team in the Dublin game always has a whole year.
They were like, there have been like fourteen ye that
have lost in Dublin and have had terrible years after that,

and you know and all that stuff that came with

I mean, I think that there's definitely there was an
impact on like that that North Dakota game, probably for sure.

to a podcast where they were talking about it and
they were like, you know, it's hard to say what
the what the through line is there? Is it that

these teams that lost in Dublin are are losing all
these games because they traveled to Dublin or were they
just not very good teams right, which is why they
lost in Dublin and then continue to lose throughout the
rest of the season. So, I mean, it's it's definitely
like it's a tough thing to have to do and
adjust to.

But you know, too, they played this game. It's the
other team did it.

I Aloway states doing fine, They're doing great, and so
you know it'll be a month basically after this Arizona
game since since they've had to do that.

Of recovery by that point from from any kind of travel,
So I, you know, I well, I think there's that
may be a part of it, a small part of it.

town a long time, and once a football season kind
of goes in the tank, and most of the time

program like Arizona or KU or Houston or whatever.

transfer class led by p J. Haggerty, who was that,
you know, the top returning score in college for basketball
last year.

it has been a while the last time that things
kind of fell apart, like this was the end of
Bill Snyder's second tenure and you had something you know

but you kind of thought that you probably had, you know,
at least four or five more seasons of Chris Climan
before he you know, considered, you know, hanging it up
or something like that. And so there will just be

to experience that last offseason, right, So Climan staff has
been fairly like consistent with you know, through the majority

a lot, if they I can see them play a
competitive game. And you know last year's game they got
that one against Utah. You touch or not to be
so great, right, I mean to go start out three
and oh if and you're had four wins last season,
I mean you can't. That's just fantastic.

wife said a really cool thing. She said, I'm really
