Speaker 1 (00:02):

your most prized possessions.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Ay, good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to I on the Ball
here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. In
today with me is Jacob Zawas and at the keyboard
my boy Kobe back from New York.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Welcome back, Kobe, Thank you, thank you. So Jay.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
We got a call from from Gabe Tollis Thursday, Tuesday,
probably with Gabe's usual We don't know what he's gonna say.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
We had guests, We had Troy here.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Is that Gay with you? I mean know that? Is
that the Jay with you? No, it's it's it's it's Troy.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
Oh damn it. I thought that was gonna be Jay.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
He misses me.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
So you have one fan.

Speaker 5 (00:55):
I did have somebody to come up to me said
they listened to me on the radio every day.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
Were you.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
I was at the game on Sunday and we were
in line to get food, you know, the preebe uh
media food. When we were talking toil blah blah blah,
and some older guy says to me, yeah, I think
you guys. Show is good with you and Jay because
you guys have this thing, this thing, this thing. Yeah,
is it a good thing? Is it's just a thing. Well, cuddly,

(01:28):
don't get too close, so back and forth.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
I appreciate it. Yeah, another one of those days.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
Yeah it is.

Speaker 5 (01:33):
And you know, look, I love being here. I wish
I could do it more. It's just not just not
feasible anymore. But I love coming over here. So I'm
happy to do it on a Thursday if you need me,
so that we can go tailgate. Well, we're not only
gonna tailgate tomorrow. You don't know we're gonna We're gonna
go hang out at a restaurant. Oh, well that's different. Yeah,
you know, it just doesn't seem feasible. Timing was, yeah,

(01:56):
you know, it's a Friday. There's really not any football,
you know for the you know, to watch. There's a
Colorado game comes out at four thirty, but would be
leaving the tailgate within a half hour forty five minutes.
So we thought about just going there anyways, but say
you want, let's let's just leave it packed up.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
For the week. We're gonna go over to Brother John's and.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Try that makes sense, and then you just school park
and go to game. Should be a good game. I mean,
come on to spreads one and a half, I think
it was. It flipped like it flipped again. So it started.
It started at the beginning of the week, Kansas State
by one and a half. On Monday. Middle of the week,
it went to Arizona by one and a half. It's
back to Kansas State by one.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
That's really no.

Speaker 5 (02:38):
It takes It takes a lot to move a spread,
and it's moved like that twice and you know you're
talking three points. Yeah, And I mean that's what happened
last week with the with the Buffalo game, because up
on Monday, the Bills were favored by point and a half,
and by the end of the week the revel their
favorite bad point a game that we both hit barely,
but he hit it prevented us from going oh man

(03:00):
was off.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
It was a tough week last week. Yeah, this week's
another tough week. But we're gonna make our picks. The
reason you're here is tomorrow we have the honey huddle.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Tomorrow is that from three to four?

Speaker 6 (03:09):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (03:09):
And then you're here to get their piction in right.

Speaker 4 (03:11):
We gotta do our picks today.

Speaker 5 (03:13):
So we're we're gonna do that our game of the
week that we both got to pick as Georgia at Tennessee.
That spread has changed a lot. It started out it
got it was again opened at three and a half,
got up to seven for Georgia. Yeah, really, and I
think it. I think it's settled back at three and
a half again. I wonder why I went to seven.

Speaker 4 (03:32):
That weird.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
I could have taken to seven.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Okay, no, no, cool, So we'll pick that at the
end of the end of the hour. In the meantime,
we're gonna have a pretty good uh line up here.
We have the beat writer for Kansas State or one
of the beat writers for Kansas State in the first hour,
and then at four seventeen, we're going to have I
think the the athlete of the game, you know, the
highlight of the game, Marquees Flowers.

Speaker 4 (03:54):
He's the he's an honorary captain. Oh cool, good for.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
You, So we'll have him on the He's the usual
guests with this over the years, so it'll be good.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
How that's a dumb question rephrase?

Speaker 4 (04:07):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (04:08):
The importance of this game for both teams Okay, okay.
First of all, I'm I'm I'm calling it out, David Kelly. Okay,
he said, this was the most important football game of
the last ten years.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
Has he been asleep?

Speaker 7 (04:25):
What? How?

Speaker 3 (04:26):
So do I don't know?

Speaker 4 (04:28):
That was it?

Speaker 3 (04:29):
That was that was the tweet. It was a tweet. Yeah,
what was the response?

Speaker 4 (04:33):
Or maybe it was a face pike, It was a tweet.
I didn't see.

Speaker 5 (04:35):
I didn't I didn't look at any responses because I
just kept going past thee and I'm like, David, come.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
On, I wonder why you would say that, you know, the.

Speaker 4 (04:44):
Alma Bowle, the ASU game that year, just.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
In the last two years, Yeah, you know there were
bigger games well in the last let's say, just two
years with with Brennan, three years with Fish, that's the five,
three with someone.

Speaker 5 (04:59):
Uh, he's going back to basically what he was saying,
was that probably saying that the last game that was
even closer to being this big was the twenty fourteen
U of AASU game.

Speaker 4 (05:09):
He said, the last biggest game in the last ten years.

Speaker 5 (05:11):
I'm like, I was so stop, David, Yeah, come on, man,
oh no, I'm gonna look as.

Speaker 4 (05:18):
The Yeah, look him up.

Speaker 5 (05:19):
Look him up and I'm like, no, it's not it's
not even close. It's not even probably in the top ten.
Is it a big game now? Yes, it's a big
game for Brent Brennan. You know, it's a big game
for anybody who's got the over five and a half
wins and the Cats. But you know, things, things don't

(05:43):
end if they if they you know, if they don't
win this game. I think going into the season, everybody
expected him to lose this game. People think they're going
to Arizona should win it now because of how Kansas
Is performed in the first two games.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
But this is now a huge game.

Speaker 5 (05:58):
It's it's it's a it's a meaningful game for for
Brennan and for the you know, if Arizona's three and oh,
now people start to get excited about the about the team.
But from the standpoint of one of the most important
games in the last ten years.

Speaker 4 (06:11):
Stop.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Yeah, So let me ask you.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
You may have just mentioned as I look for his tweet,
I can't plan it on his twitter. So, uh, is
this a line one and a half which is almost
a picking game because Kansas City is still unknown and
they're just not good or Arizona's close because they kind.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
Of look good.

Speaker 5 (06:28):
Well, it's it's it's it's it's both Steve, you know,
I mean, I mean, look what Kansas State has done.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
You know what they're they're one and two.

Speaker 5 (06:36):
They beat South Dakota or notth Dakota, not State, so
it wasn't one of the good teams. And then they
lost to Army, who lost to Charlton State the week before.
So you know, I want to ask, uh, you know
this beat Rider, you know, what the hell is going
on over there? Clearly not what people were expecting coming

(06:56):
into the season with Kansas State, So what are they now?

Speaker 4 (07:01):
The thing that you hear when you're an Arizona fan
is you.

Speaker 5 (07:04):
Know they're going to show up and play their best
game of the year and and everybody's going to lose
their minds if Arizona loses this game, because they should
meet these guys.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
Yeah, but we don't know a lot about Arizona.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
We don't. We don't not against the better team than
the place.

Speaker 5 (07:18):
I mean, what happened Saturday was what were supposed to happen, thought,
and as if you're an Arizona fan, you wanted to
happen and what And you know what, I what I
thought I talked about was that what what what you
wanted was for Noah Faida to go out and play
a really good game, get some confidence, see some things,
and iron some things out from the week before, which

(07:40):
it looks like they did that. But whether those things
are going to work against Kansas State, it's a whole difference.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
Because the quality of a post is matter. So you're
I'm going to label you as the typical Arizona fan,
you know, die when bah blah. So do you feel
good what you've seen over the last two Of course
you do, But how good do you feel?

Speaker 5 (08:00):
Oh I'm still waiting to see Yeah, okay, yeah and
then yeah, we don't know. You know what I the
conversation I had with somebody on Tuesday was they've done
what they were supposed to do. Now I'll even say
that they beat Hawaii worse than I expected them to.

Speaker 4 (08:19):
You know that.

Speaker 5 (08:19):
I think that line was seventeen and I wasn't taking
it right. I thought if they won twenty four to
seven or something like that, that that was all you could expect.
You know, they beat the hell out of them, And
I told you I went to watch some of the
game after the fact and watching it on TV, I've
realized it looked better on TV than it did. That
what exception, and that's your quarterback, right and he yeah,

(08:40):
he still didn't have a great game. Defensively, they dominated,
they punished him. So they've done what you would have
wanted them to do in order for you to believe
that they're a good team.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
Right, Well, let me see you last year at this time,
we were in the same spot. I mean we as
an observing the fan. They won their first two games,
but the style points and I talked about seven points
all the time.

Speaker 3 (09:03):
We're not good, not great for good and you're not
for the Hawaii again.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
And you're thinking, you're thinking, well, the New Mexico game, remember,
and then last year, yeah, you and you're thinking.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
I remember walking out of the stadium.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
I said this a few times and fans were saying, Oh,
this continues, We're gonna suck, and I'm thinking, kind of relax.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
Well, no, they were right.

Speaker 4 (09:20):
They were they were right.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
Right, So at least you don't have that.

Speaker 5 (09:22):
You don't have, right, you feel like there's not you
haven't seen anything bad yet. No, right, you saw Fafita,
not being all for Feeda in that first game.

Speaker 4 (09:30):
But then.

Speaker 5 (09:33):
You know, and again I get the competition, but he
did what you would expect him to do against that
level of.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
Competition, right right, And maybe it'll it wasn't a struggle.
Maybe it won't, but this will be the test. And
if even if they win twenty twenty one, whatever, just
what And we have that discussion with Ricky and he's
a coach, right, as.

Speaker 4 (09:54):
Long as we win, just win the game.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
Just win the game. And now that's how it is
the rest of the way, right.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
You know, just win the game. Just win the game,
no matter who you're playing, Just win the game. You know.

Speaker 5 (10:03):
Uh So you know where I'm at is I'm still
you know, let's see how good they are.

Speaker 4 (10:09):
We'll find out.

Speaker 5 (10:10):
I think we find out a lot more in this
game coming up than you know, any of the two
games previously. But going in, you feel like they've done
the stuff that they were supposed to do, and so
they've got a chance to win this game. And well,
I'd be a little surprised if they don't a little
bit because I think you know, what Kansas State has

(10:31):
showed is that Arizona, you know, has a good chance
to win this game.

Speaker 4 (10:36):
Yeah, so I don't know. We'll see what happened and
that that.

Speaker 5 (10:39):
You know, the guys, the guys that I'm around me,
that I talked to, are all kind of in the
same place. So let's see what happens in this game,
and let's not make a judgment until we until we
know that. And we've all been waiting for this game
since the start of the season. We've all been saying
we're not going to know anything about them until this game.

Speaker 4 (10:57):
It's here.

Speaker 3 (10:57):
Yeah, nothing's changed.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
So the guy we're gonna be talking to, Tim Everson
from the uh from the paper it's Mercury Sports in Manhattan,
Cany was talking before, haven't we No, No, he's okay
because we I don't know.

Speaker 3 (11:09):
We haven't talked to him before.

Speaker 4 (11:10):
You have a basketball game or anything. No, okay.

Speaker 2 (11:13):
Uh, So we're gonna talk to him there and then
we're gonna talk to again to Marquis Flowers on the
four o'clock hour and then make her picks afterwards. So
if you guys have calls, give us a call back
four to thirty five and beyond, No, no, no, three
to thirty five and beyond and maybe even during my
boys breaking news, so we can get the two hours
pretty covered pretty quickly.

Speaker 5 (11:34):
Well, I'm looking forward to the game because they again
I want to see you know, deserves one to have
a chance to have a good season.

Speaker 4 (11:41):
Yeah, and I.

Speaker 5 (11:41):
Think even if they lose, but it's a tough game,
hard fought game. You know, you have a chance to
win in the fourth Quartering you lose the game, the
season is not over. There's still you know, there's a
lot of games. Look, they're not Oklahoma State, right, so
but if they win, you know, you got a week off,
then they're then there on the road.

Speaker 4 (12:01):
Maybe by the time they come back. People were fired
up about this team.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
Yeah, yeah, I think what do you think the fans?
Did you go? Did you go during the what was
your situation?

Speaker 8 (12:10):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (12:10):
Did I tell you what happened? No, we didn't go
to the game.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
You were outside, right, you know, you didn't go to
the game at all.

Speaker 4 (12:17):
We went to the tailgate.

Speaker 5 (12:19):
At the tail end of our tailgate, my grandson ran
out in front of some kids playing football, got smashed,
took some air and broke his collar bone. Oh it
was a two year old. Yeah, yeah, and so we
at about So that's why Adam wasn't at the right thing.

(12:41):
About five thirty or so, he was in an ambulance
headed to UMC and we were with him.

Speaker 4 (12:48):
We went, you know, went to MC.

Speaker 2 (12:50):
How was that scene at the tailgate? Was it crazy
that where'd the ambulance go in?

Speaker 4 (12:57):
No?

Speaker 5 (12:57):
No, what happened was you know, he got knocked down,
he was crying. We were a little worried he might
have a concussion. So Adam had left for the game,
his dad had left for the game, and so my
wife took him, and my wife and my sister took
him over to where the paramedics were over by Michale
And it was there that they decided to you know,

(13:19):
to send him to the hospital. And because of the
traffic and all that stuff, and they thought it was
best to put him in an ambulance, and so they
did and that by that time Adam came back and
he wrote in the ambulance with them, So he wasn't
He went by ambulance to UH to TMC.

Speaker 4 (13:35):
Uh. He fractured collar bone. Uh. He's fine, He's okay.
There's nothing.

Speaker 5 (13:40):
There's all you can do, right, there's nothing you can
do about it. It's just got a heal. He was
in some pain for a couple of days. Took a
lot of motrin and and kids tail and all, and
he's running around. Adam broke his arm. He fell off
the bed and broke his arm when he was like
three months. I'm glad.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
I'm not a gonsolate you guys take.

Speaker 5 (14:05):
Well, all three of my kids have had broken bones
at a young ages.

Speaker 3 (14:09):

Hey?

Speaker 3 (19:00):
Are you making the trip down?

Speaker 7 (19:02):
I am not unfortunately.

Speaker 2 (19:04):
Okay, so now you have to explain what the hell
is going on with Kansas State?

Speaker 3 (19:08):
Everyone dout the guys are going to be good.

Speaker 14 (19:11):
Yeah, it's uh, you know, it's I wish that it
were easy to explain.

Speaker 7 (19:17):
I wish that I had a good grasp on it, but.

Speaker 14 (19:19):
Unfortunately, I think we're all, uh, we're all just trying
to figure it out ourselves.

Speaker 7 (19:24):
It's been, uh, it's it's.

Speaker 14 (19:26):
Definitely been a little bit of a whiplash from the
past three weeks.

Speaker 4 (19:31):
For sure.

Speaker 5 (19:32):
Are the are the I mean, is there I don't
know how much you can tell about, you know, what
the fans are saying back over there, But I mean
there had to be high There's had to be expectations, right,
But you know, are they in a panic yet?

Speaker 4 (19:46):
What's everybody thinking so far?

Speaker 15 (19:49):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (19:50):
No, the panic fans panic sets in pretty quickly.

Speaker 14 (19:55):
Yes, especially especially when the expectations were as high as
things were. And I you know, is a big thing
that that that case they coaches and players have been
talking about is accountability. And one thing that I kind
of had to take accountability in is I'm part of,
you know, not a huge part, but part of the
reason why those expectations were high. I said that they

(20:19):
were going to be good. I thought they were going
to be good. I'm not the only one, but yeah, no,
it's been you know, people people freaked out after the
Iowa State loss, but then once a day or two passed,
they were able to kind of excuse that one away
or whatever. But then when they came out flat against
North Dakota and and barely won that, uh, you know,

(20:44):
the fear was there. And then, as I described it
in one of my stories, it was like the benefit
of the doubt was still there before the Army game,
and then now it's it's pretty much all doubts at
this point.

Speaker 5 (20:58):
Well, well know, you know, we know a big twelve
to not do a media poll. But so let me
ask you where would you have ranked them if there
had been a media poll.

Speaker 14 (21:06):
I probably would have picked them first. I felt I
felt really, really good. I felt that, you know, another
year for for Avery Johnson to take another step forward.

Speaker 7 (21:16):
I really liked what they had coming back on defense.

Speaker 14 (21:22):
I I thought that the transfers, one of which was
was your guys's gunner Maldonato, I thought was going to
be and still could still. I mean, it's still early,
and that's a good thing to remember. But I, you know,
I I just think that maybe some things that we
papered over, problems with the offensive line, you know, the

(21:43):
secondary being pretty pretty young and inexperienced, have have not
have had been problems.

Speaker 7 (21:52):
And then there have been other things that.

Speaker 14 (21:54):
People did not anticipate being problems that that are now problems.
So it's a it's it's not a it's not a
super happy place right at the Veneer Football Football Complex.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
The funny thing is, you know, we were both Jay
and I are both the newspaper guys long term, a
long time ago, and I think the best time to
be covering a team is on the uprise. The second
best time is when they're on the down rights. You
can have a lot to write about.

Speaker 3 (22:20):
Right. Did they spend a lot of money into transfer portal?

Speaker 14 (22:26):
I mean for uh, you know, for case state, for
what what case state can do. I think that they
did a good amount. One thing the climate has talked
about is that in general, he would rather dedicate the
majority of that nil now rev share money h for

(22:48):
to keep guys around, Yes, yes, that you know, and
try to keep that player attention, which is you know,
it has been a winning formula for them, you know,
since he got here. And so there were you know,
there were a couple, you know. I think Maldonado was
was a guy that was probably wanted by a lot

(23:10):
of programs, But in general, I don't I wouldn't describe
it as you know, a lot of money.

Speaker 5 (23:19):
Probably, I'm sure, yeah, I would would put I would
think Kansas State in Arizona, similar.

Speaker 4 (23:26):
Income levels or whatever money to spend. What's right?

Speaker 5 (23:30):
Avery Johnson gave it all kinds of hell to to
Arizona last year.

Speaker 4 (23:34):
What's his story been this so far?

Speaker 14 (23:38):
Well, and at least from my perspective, I think Avery
has been good. He's he's been good. He has been great,
but he's he's for the most part, he's cleared up
his turnover problem that he had last year, and that
was a big thing that he worked on. The way
I've described it is, Avery Johnson has played well enough

(24:01):
for this team to be three and oh okay, the
problems could he.

Speaker 7 (24:06):
Now could he have played better?

Speaker 14 (24:08):
Sure, Like I'm not saying he's been perfect, but I
would not if I was listing, if I was ranking
the problems him, his his performance himself. He was really
good versus Army. I mean he was, he was, he
was accurate for for you know, the majority of the game.
He had some million nice steep balls. Problem is he
was only on the field for three minutes in the

(24:29):
second half. Wow, it's just hard to I know, I mean,
it was just hard to have a big impact on
the game when you only get two drives and thirteen
plays in two full quarters.

Speaker 4 (24:42):
Well crazy.

Speaker 5 (24:44):
So do the fans, you know, because we know that
here right Arizona fans, you lose a couple of games
and they lose their minds and disappear and they're pissed.
And the do the fans stick with the team? Ten
to stick with the team or they all losing their minds?

Speaker 14 (25:04):
Yeah, I mean, I mean lost their minds. Has definitely
been happening, especially if you look on social media. It's
it's tough to tell the real impact because the you know,
the Army game was sold out. You know that was
not you know, that was a normal situation and now
the way that it's set up, obviously they go they

(25:26):
go to Tucson tomorrow, they have a bye week next week,
and then they play UCF at home the week after.
So I do worry what things are going to look
like if they if they lose at Arizona and then
they have, you know, two and a half weeks to
just kind of sit and stew on on that.

Speaker 7 (25:52):
It's not going to be good. I mean, it just isn't.
Do I think that they.

Speaker 14 (25:57):
Will unravel completely? I don't think so, not at least
not yet. But I don't think anyone is happy or
satisfied with how things have started.

Speaker 2 (26:09):
So what's the situation with the coach? Did you have
a press convents already this week? You must have must
have had something.

Speaker 4 (26:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (26:15):
And his his demeanor or whatever.

Speaker 14 (26:19):
Yeah, Climan, it's you know, I he very much projects
you know, a calmness that's he's never he's never wanted
to really freak out. Uh, you know, whether it's on
the sideline very much. You don't see him go super crazy.
You know, he's a very even keeled guy. You know,

(26:42):
he talks about you know, keeping you know, keeping togetherness,
you know, kind of staying in the course. You know,
he said, this is you know, this is a crisis
for sure, but it's you know, we don't need to panic.
And in some respects, I you know, I agree with them.

(27:03):
That they come out and they play well and they
win tomorrow, then you know, you have a you're really
sitting in a similar spot than that you were in
twenty twenty two in case they won the Big Twelve,
which is they had they had a couple of Big
Twelve losses. They lost a game at home to a
Tulane team that ended up being pretty good, but then

(27:28):
they still ended up going to the Beigital Championship game
and beating TCU and unview TCU team in the Bagel Championship.
So you know, if you you beat Arizona, you're still
all of that is still available to you technically, But
the problem is it's just there's just been no indication
that that gear is available.

Speaker 4 (27:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (27:51):
Yeah, I heard it think the day that the losing
team in the Dublin game always has a whole year.
They were like, there have been like fourteen ye that
have lost in Dublin and have had terrible years after that,
the most recent obviously being Florida State last year, anything
to that, anything too? Are you noticing has there been

(28:13):
any impact to that? You know, the travel in the
and you know and all that stuff that came with
with doing the Dublin game.

Speaker 14 (28:22):
I mean, I think that there's definitely there was an
impact on like that that North Dakota game, probably for sure.
I have a hard time. I think I was listening
to a podcast where they were talking about it and
they were like, you know, it's hard to say what
the what the through line is there? Is it that

(28:44):
these teams that lost in Dublin are are losing all
these games because they traveled to Dublin or were they
just not very good teams right, which is why they
lost in Dublin and then continue to lose throughout the
rest of the season. So, I mean, it's it's definitely
like it's a tough thing to have to do and
adjust to.

Speaker 7 (29:04):
But you know, too, they played this game. It's the
other team did it.

Speaker 14 (29:08):
I Aloway states doing fine, They're doing great, and so
you know it'll be a month basically after this Arizona
game since since they've had to do that.

Speaker 7 (29:20):
In general, you kind.

Speaker 14 (29:22):
Of recovery by that point from from any kind of travel,
So I, you know, I well, I think there's that
may be a part of it, a small part of it.

Speaker 7 (29:33):
I just can't believe that it causes that much of
a problem.

Speaker 2 (29:39):
So how long have you been covering the Kansas State teams?
Have you been there a while?

Speaker 7 (29:44):
Well?

Speaker 14 (29:45):
I yeah, So I started in college. I went I
went to k State and was on the student newspaper
and that was like from twenty twelve to twenty sixteen,
and then I bounced around a little bit to some
smaller papers, and then I got back to the Mercury
in twenty twenty one, and then started in like twenty

(30:06):
twenty two on was the full time the writer and
sports actor.

Speaker 2 (30:13):
The reason I asked us, We've been here in this
town a long time, and once a football season kind
of goes in the tank, and most of the time
it does.

Speaker 4 (30:20):
Sorry, Jay, yeah, really you said it like that.

Speaker 2 (30:24):
In terms of I mean, if Arizona doesn't do well
the next two games, guess what they're gonna say. It's
a basketball season. So what do you guys turn down?
What do they turn to?

Speaker 14 (30:35):
I mean, they turned basketball and just you hope because
it's you know, it's odd as nearly consistent as a
program like Arizona or KU or Houston or whatever.

Speaker 7 (30:48):
But there's still excitement there.

Speaker 14 (30:50):
They brought in, you know, Tang, brought in a good
transfer class led by p J. Haggerty, who was that,
you know, the top returning score in college for basketball
last year.

Speaker 7 (31:02):
So I mean, that's that's where it will turn.

Speaker 14 (31:04):
But also, uh, it's just it's I don't know, it's
it has been a while the last time that things
kind of fell apart, like this was the end of
Bill Snyder's second tenure and you had something you know
you could blame. It's like, okay, well, obviously this is
when it's course, you know, the players aren't listening anymore. Yeah,

(31:29):
but you kind of thought that you probably had, you know,
at least four or five more seasons of Chris Climan
before he you know, considered, you know, hanging it up
or something like that. And so there will just be
a lot of a lot of questions, a lot of frustrations.
You know, I would imagine that there would be some

(31:50):
shake ups, you know, staff wise. Obviously you guys got
to experience that last offseason, right, So Climan staff has
been fairly like consistent with you know, through the majority
of it since he got here, so.

Speaker 7 (32:09):
You would look at that.

Speaker 2 (32:11):
I don't know, So Tim will come to the point
where I'm gonna put you on the spot up with
Jay on the spot too.

Speaker 3 (32:16):
Who's gonna win?

Speaker 14 (32:19):
So I do the pregame show that that that runs
on on k State's flagship radio network up here, and
I picked Arizona to win. I just don't So I
don't see the fire, I don't see the juice. Well,
I just I I haven't seen it, and I can't
keep picking him to win. I can't do it.

Speaker 3 (32:40):
So that might be your last time on that show.

Speaker 7 (32:46):
We are we are, we are separate from from the universe.

Speaker 14 (32:50):
But we all now granted all three of us, all three,
all four of us did did did pick Arizona to win.

Speaker 2 (32:59):
Let me say this because typically even if you're a
Homer or not a Homer, the Homers picked their home team, right.

Speaker 4 (33:04):
Well, yeah, there's no way.

Speaker 5 (33:06):
Yeah, we've almost not ever had right unless somebody was
super bad, right right. You know, we've had a couple
of we had a couple of people pick against there
the team that they cover.

Speaker 4 (33:14):
But in general, you know, if you're pretty good team.

Speaker 5 (33:16):
So that's interesting because I'm sitting here thinking, you know,
it's going to be just like Arizona to lose this
game when everybody thinks.

Speaker 4 (33:23):
Nobody thought they would.

Speaker 5 (33:24):
At the beginning of the season, I didn't know anybody
who thought Arizona could be Kansas State. And now I'm thinking,
and now I'm saying that everybody thinks Arizona should beat
Kansas State because that's.

Speaker 4 (33:33):
How Arizona fans are.

Speaker 5 (33:35):
People there, Yeah, that's how Arizona fans are so and
in that in cases like that, Arizona always loses those games.

Speaker 4 (33:42):
So there you go.

Speaker 3 (33:43):
So you understand our psychology.

Speaker 2 (33:44):
Yeah, ideal, I those are what those those are wet matches,
but they're still going.

Speaker 7 (33:50):
To burn down the house exactly exactly.

Speaker 2 (33:54):
Jay, you want to say what you think? No, okay, Well,
because he doesn't know.

Speaker 4 (33:59):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (34:00):
You screwed this, Yeah, Tim, Honestly, you know, I wouldn't
be surprised that anything happening. I wouldn't be surprised. I'd
be surprised to see a Kansas State blowout. I wouldn't
be surprised to see an Arizona blow up. But I wouldn't
be surprised to see Kansas State win, and I wouldn't
be surprised to say Arizona win a close game as well.
So if there's if you've got four scenarios, I think

(34:20):
three of them are very possible, and that's fair.

Speaker 7 (34:24):
That's fair.

Speaker 2 (34:25):
Yeah, And let me know if you ever received the
Eon the ball decoder.

Speaker 3 (34:29):
We have our listeners have a decoder for reasons like that.

Speaker 2 (34:35):
Tim, Thanks a bunch, Good luck with your story on
on tomorrownight.

Speaker 7 (34:40):
Absolutely than you.

Speaker 2 (34:42):
Talk to you, well, let me say, there's a lot
to well your statement. Yeah, if you take a left
and I would take it right, we'll get to that
and then and then they pick Yeah, okay, let's move
on from this. I won't take a break and talk
more about it. If you're an Arizona men's basketball fan,
you know it's been successful for nearly forty years.

Speaker 3 (39:32):
Let's take it to be nice.

Speaker 2 (39:36):
Analysis Just you have to come here. You have to
come here every day to understand. To find that.

Speaker 4 (39:40):
Out, I don't know. I mean what I said wasn't
all that complicated.

Speaker 2 (39:47):
I lost you lost me. If this then okay, let
me do it again. We hold that thought. We gotta
call Okay, it might be one of your boys. Although
you're on the air and nine on the ball will
be He'll be pleased.

Speaker 3 (40:00):
There he lost.

Speaker 2 (40:02):
Okay, go ahead, look for scenarios again.

Speaker 3 (40:08):
You're back on the air.

Speaker 6 (40:09):
Hello, Hello, Hey, yeah, Steve.

Speaker 3 (40:13):
Mike Quinn, Hey Mike, Hey Mike, what's up?

Speaker 6 (40:16):
And you're yeah they listen. You know, I'm listening to
the discussion on Kansas State about uh, like everyone's all
down in the mouth and thinking that Kansas State sid
they get because Army beat them. Listen, Army has played
some you know, they took Michigan overtime, they beat Oklahoma
or they almost beat Oklahoma, took them to overtime. Uh,

(40:36):
they won the AC last year, they won a bowl
game there. They played these teams tough. So I wouldn't
say Kansas State is going to be nothing for Arizona
because Army beat them.

Speaker 5 (40:46):
Well, the only thing to that, Mike, is that two
weeks ago Army lost to Tarletan State.

Speaker 21 (40:53):
So that's how they're looking past.

Speaker 4 (40:55):
Now, Yeah, that's what people are saying.

Speaker 5 (40:56):
That's what people see that Tarrantan State beat Army, so
therefore Kansas.

Speaker 4 (41:02):
State lost Army.

Speaker 6 (41:04):
Yeah and yeah, and you know it's like this team
beat that team and this team beat right right right,
and and we should have won the national champions the uh.
But you know there's there's that no, no, no, I
don't I don't doubt it, you know, I'm uh you know, uh.
You know when when Army lost that first game, it
was like going, oh my god, at the end of
the world. But uh, like you said, it was their

(41:25):
first game, and they were looking past them, looking at
Kansas State. But I tell you what the Army can.
The Army did what Army does, and they kept the
offense off the field. I'm not sure if Arizona's going
to be doing that with their offense.

Speaker 5 (41:42):
So well, and and again yeah, and Tim gave us
that stat that they had the buffle what do you say,
two minutes of the second half or something like that,
or and that's that's a crazy stat.

Speaker 4 (41:52):
That's a crazy stat.

Speaker 6 (41:53):
Well okay, so yeah, well we'll see how it goes.
I just would I just don't want people to think
it's like, oh, because they lost the Army, they're gonna
not be any good.

Speaker 3 (42:04):
Yeah, just real quick, are you going, are you gonna go?
Are you going tomorrow?

Speaker 4 (42:08):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (42:09):
I can't go tomorrow. I gotta I gotta Gala I'm
going to Yeah, that should be a really good game,
but a good test for Arizona.

Speaker 4 (42:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (42:18):
Yeah, okay, thanks Mike, thank you.

Speaker 22 (42:21):
Thanks.

Speaker 2 (42:23):
We saw that somebody else called, uh calls back. We'll
take the call real quick. How much man we got
We got a lot of time?

Speaker 4 (42:29):
Yeah, okay, we got somebody back.

Speaker 3 (42:33):
Hello, you're on the air and nine the ball.

Speaker 21 (42:35):
Hi, I had to call. It's games. I had to
call because days in there.

Speaker 3 (42:40):
Go ahead, give him a grief.

Speaker 4 (42:43):
I'm ready for you.

Speaker 21 (42:45):
Okay. Good. So, I think what we're trying to say
when we look at the situation this week is this
this game represents as big an opportunity to step into
legitimate territory.

Speaker 6 (43:00):
As anything we've seen for a while.

Speaker 21 (43:04):
It's a big opportunity if we were to beat Kansas State.

Speaker 4 (43:09):
That's not true. That okay, that's true.

Speaker 5 (43:11):
Real quick response to that, though, is, let's not forget
the ten and three season. There were there were a
bunch of big games that year.

Speaker 21 (43:17):
So go on, yeah, that was a totally different thing.

Speaker 4 (43:21):
Okay.

Speaker 21 (43:24):
You can't relate these one things.

Speaker 4 (43:25):
To another, different teams, different people.

Speaker 3 (43:29):
So are you saying time give me a timeframe of that?

Speaker 21 (43:32):
Then, James, let me finish my my analysis.

Speaker 3 (43:39):
I only have nine minutes, James, while you guys are interrupted.

Speaker 21 (43:47):
The only one that's gonna lose their mind over a
football game here is Jay. No one else does that.
So but I think if we I'm encouraged. When I
look at the running backs, they look good. They look
very talented. In fact, all the skill position people, they

(44:09):
look like they've got a definite upgrade there, right wide, receiver,
tight end, and running back. The question mark is can
the offensive line make place for them to run and throw?
And I think that's going to be the key to
this game is how the offensive line performs in how

(44:35):
how well we run the ball. I still worry we
get past happy and that looks fun for a while,
but it doesn't build a winning season.

Speaker 3 (44:44):
So I'll let you guys have at it.

Speaker 2 (44:46):
Thank you, Okay, thanks, hold on, let me pick you
up off the ground. I know you fell off that
statement of the only one that's going.

Speaker 3 (44:51):
To worry is you.

Speaker 4 (44:52):
I don't lose my mind over losses.

Speaker 2 (44:54):
Do I go ahead, Cobe, you take care of this one.
Not really, No, no, not really. I think I think
I'm pretty rational. I think well on Thursday, Yeah, after
games you're upset. I guess you're telling me this. Well, Okay,
games are on Saturday.

Speaker 5 (45:10):
So when when I was doing the show every day,
by by the time Monday rolled around and I kind
of gathered myself and was was pretty realistic about stuff. Now,
the sumbling years were awful, and I hated that, but
you know, it was like, I I'm.

Speaker 3 (45:27):
An Arizona fan. I'm I'm used to getting kicked in
the nards. Well that's when you did your explanation. That
was exactly what it is.

Speaker 2 (45:35):
This is the perfect game that you think they're gonna
win and then they don't, right, right, because you're the
You're the lucy in the pool in the fright.

Speaker 5 (45:43):
It's it's I always talk about games being a game
that Arizona never gets to win. You know, it's a
game that means a lot, and and Arizona never gets
to win those, whether it's football, basketball, baseball, whatever sport.

Speaker 2 (45:56):
And to Jim's point, and I understand what he's saying,
I'm sure I'm sure you did too, about the about
the opportunity to go through you know, and see where
you said. Still, if Kansas State is said to be
not that good, you're thinking Okay, maybe next week will
be the test or the week after will be the test,
because we don't know how good this team is going to.

Speaker 4 (46:16):
We don't.

Speaker 3 (46:16):
We don't even if they do beat Kansas State. Okay,
now you're you're a singer.

Speaker 5 (46:19):
Let's say Arizona blows them out, you know, a blowoff,
you know, forty to more something more power. Now for
two weeks, Arizona fans are going to say you should
go beat Iowa State.

Speaker 4 (46:33):
And get it. Get it in your head right now, right.

Speaker 5 (46:37):
Now, today, this moment, even before the game tomorrow, Arizona
is not going to Iowa State to win and winning
that game, now, can they? Yes, possibly, should we think
that they're going to No, no, you shouldn't think that
they're going to, but you should take it if they do, obviously.

Speaker 2 (46:53):
Right yeah, but but tomorrow will be there. But tomorrow
they can't mess up tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (46:57):
And even no matter what happens tomorrow, I mean, how
how many times has you know Arizona been taken behind
the woodshed or lost the game that they shouldn't have
lost and then they come back the next week? So right,
that's the other thing about what Arizona does. You get
down on them and then they come back and win
a game you don't expect.

Speaker 3 (47:16):
We got another call.

Speaker 2 (47:17):
Hello, you're on the air and one of the ball
who's this?

Speaker 3 (47:20):
This is Jeff, Jeff, what's the word?

Speaker 14 (47:23):
Hey?

Speaker 22 (47:25):
I am really uh really surprised what I'm seeing. I
was the season ticket holder and uh really just played
in the last season. Almost didn't get my.

Speaker 4 (47:36):
This year.

Speaker 22 (47:38):
But they the attitude type of player is totally different
though we saw last season.

Speaker 4 (47:48):
Different.

Speaker 3 (47:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (47:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 22 (47:49):
And what I like to see tomorrow I'd like to
see them coming from behind. I mean I like to
see them get down and see how they how they
respond to that. I like to say, a close game
and I don't expect them to win, but I like
to see I like to see them being a really
tight competitive game and then see how they how they
handle that.

Speaker 3 (48:10):
Let me ask you a quick question. Are you from Tucson?
And how long have you had your teeth?

Speaker 1 (48:14):
For?

Speaker 22 (48:14):
Thirty years?

Speaker 3 (48:15):
But you're not a two soon?

Speaker 11 (48:17):
No?

Speaker 2 (48:18):
Oh, So you're kind of an aberration because if you're
for listen from timbuk two and there's a lot of
you guys out there who come in and kind of
embrace the U A by tickets and stick with them.
So you know, you should be proud of you.

Speaker 4 (48:29):
Thirty years you're pretty you're pretty big. Close Still, what
did you.

Speaker 3 (48:32):
Grow up or did you grow up Michigan Michigan? So
I'm sure you have a huge allegiance to Michigan.

Speaker 22 (48:39):
Well, I was more Michigan State guy. My brothers are all.

Speaker 3 (48:43):
Well say, same difference, same difference.

Speaker 5 (48:45):
But here's the Here's the deal, Jeff, is that is
that you know you're as an Arizona fan, you're just
used to getting your your face kicked in at the
when you least expect it, and then you do something
special when you least expect and so that's the that's kind.

Speaker 15 (49:02):
Of my.

Speaker 4 (49:04):
Approach to to things.

Speaker 5 (49:05):
When you're talking Arizona football and so again, I af
airs on wins tomorrow. Then it's kind of like, Okay,
you know you were hoping they would, but in the
back of your mind you really didn't think they were
going to.

Speaker 22 (49:18):
Well, I well, from just what I've seen, I mean,
I am just I was really down on Brannan. I
tell you guys a few times and talked about it,
but I mean, I just it's a total I mean,
we you know, you watched them be behind the NAU
in the first half last year. It was just they
came out flat. And anyway, even if they don't win

(49:39):
a lot, if they I can see them play a
competitive game. And you know last year's game they got
that one against Utah. You touch or not to be
so great, right, I mean to go start out three
and oh if and you're had four wins last season,
I mean you can't. That's just fantastic.

Speaker 4 (49:54):
Well, I agree.

Speaker 5 (49:55):
I agree with you that it looks different from you know,
bouncing their step kind of approach.

Speaker 3 (50:02):
Well winning does that?

Speaker 2 (50:03):
Let me ask you something real quick, Jeff, what made
you decide to renew the tickets if you were already down?

Speaker 22 (50:10):
Well, just because there's something to do on Saturday night.
We enjoy going, We enjoy the atmosphere. Yeah, it's just
it's just like entertainment.

Speaker 4 (50:18):
Yeah. Cool.

Speaker 3 (50:20):
Well, good for you, Good for you. We'll see you
there tomorrow. Thanks guys, thank you, thanks for calling.

Speaker 2 (50:27):
Yeah, he's that's that's a good call, because you know
he's kind of like you.

Speaker 9 (50:31):
You've been here all your life. He's thirty years, right,
he's been a long time. I mean I've sat there.
There have been times that I've sat there and thought
if I wasn't there, if I wasn't going there on
the football games on Saturday nights in the fall, what
would I be.

Speaker 4 (50:43):
Doing with myself?

Speaker 3 (50:44):
Well, you'd be watching football.

Speaker 5 (50:45):
I can't think of anything good. No, because if I
was watching football, that means I was a football fan.
So I would feel like I need to be at
the games. So if I wasn't a football fan to
go to the movies, what do you do? I don't
know what people do when there's a football game going.

Speaker 2 (51:00):
All I know is you married up and you're grateful
for that. Int you admitted it yesterday.

Speaker 5 (51:07):
Well yeah, and and and it's but you know, my
wife said a really cool thing. She said, I'm really
glad to be part of this family and and and
all the sports that this family does. I've been having
fun with this the entire time we've been together.

Speaker 4 (51:23):
And that was a really cool thing.

Speaker 5 (51:24):
So, because you never know, because I'll tell you what
wife Number one wasn't wasn't that she probably never went
to another football game after after we called her a day.

Speaker 3 (51:36):
Well maybe not with the Gonzales is not or not
at all. I'm guessing that was quick we gotta go.
All right, we gotta go.
