Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services in
sure your most prized possessions.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
A good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to I on the Ball
here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. In
today with me is Troy Hutchison.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
From Arizon Wildcats on SI.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Welcome Troy. I'm running the show here, so hold your breath, baby,
Buckle up everybody. It could be a good show. Could
be that's a good show. But hey, we have some
good people coming up. Yeah, so it's up to me
to screw this. Steing up, Troy. What's going on with
the football team? You know?

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Three and zero start looked pretty good against Kansas State,
had a dominant performance defensively and kind of piece things
together offensively. There are some opportunities out there on the
field to make it a little bit bigger of a
margin for Arizona, but penalties and just sloppy play kind
of came back to there's.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
So many things that offensive line, Holy crape, too many turnovers.
You know, I'll be like a coach, right, I don't
look at the good things. I look at the bad things.
But I'll look at the good things too, the offensive line.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Too many penalties, Yeah, I mean it seemed like Oprah
Winfrey out there. You get a penalty, you get a penalty.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
And everybody did get a penalty, you know, Jimmy crack
Court and you know whatever. Yeah, and then that and
then the I was there as a spectator watching and uh,
and I'm thinking when the guy breaks loose at the
first play of the second half, yeah, I'm thinking, there's
no way he can lose this game. Oh he loses

(01:38):
this game. Oh man, it's not gonna be good.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
Well, and you know, we were sitting up there in
the press box, a couple of colleagues of mine and
Ryan kellup here, and we're like, okay, this feels like
a classic Arizona game. You dominate the first half. You
probably should be up a little bit more in the
first half. Yeah, and then it just all goes the hell, right,
what the hell just happened?

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Yeah, when they broke it, when he broke for you
for that, it was just two plays, right, the muff
punt and the run, and you're thinking, know, man, this
is gonna turn ugly, and he can't afford to do this.
He righted it in a good way obviously. Uh, And
we're gonna have a guest here in the second hour,
mister Gonzalez Gonzalez to talk all about it. But but
that's what saved the day. What the defense? The defense?

Speaker 3 (02:21):
Yeah, do you look at the errors that they made
in terms of special teams, Yeah, I think three missfield goals,
two missfield goals.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Total, well, for sure, the one at the end of
the half.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
Yeah, and then there was the one at the end
of the game. Well, that final possession for Arizona to
make it a nine point game, and I think they
had one more earlier in the game as well. And
then you had the muff punt, Yeah, that led to
three points early on for Kansas State.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Which was a benefit because they could have easy scored
a touchdown.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
And then he had the block punt off of sloppy
ball handling by Michael Silgotto. Strange strange one, and that
led to seven points right there. So realistically, the defense
gave up seven points in that game.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Yeah, ten of that.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
You really can't blame on the defense.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
No, And they held, they held as firm as they
could under the conditions. So we'll have Danny Gonzalez here
at the four to seventeen hour first hour, we're gonna
have Brian Peterson from Azy Desert's on going back and
also reviewing the game. But a lot of good things.
I mean, there was a decent crowd, you know, about
forty They said forty, like five hundred of anything. That's

(03:25):
more accurate than the other ones that I think, but
realistically maybe thirty eight, but close to forty. Yeah, it
was spotty.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
It was a little spotty, but and it filled in
as the game got closer. I thought it was a
good crowd. It seemed like the energy was high.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
I agree with you.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
A lot of Kansas State fans that helped in attendance,
that helped. My dad was in the crowd watching the game,
and he was on that Kansas State side and he said, man,
their fans are ruthless. Yeah, it was ruthless, because how
could they be ruthless to their own team? Oh yeah, yeah,
yelling at the guys. Man, you guys, aren't you know
explicit here?

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Well, they're right, I mean, they're kind of right. We
had the beat writer last week and he said, this
team is not any good. I did you make your prediction?
I did, would you would you have?

Speaker 3 (04:07):
I had thirty one seventeen Arizona, I thought, with how
sloppy Kansas State has been.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Playing, exactly exactly, I had Arizona winning two because we
had the beat writer on the other side saying it's
not any good. So I said, well, and they never
are the people who cover the team rarely, I shouldn't
say never picked the other team, and he picked Arizona
because he knows how not effective these his team is. Yeah,
this team that he covers anything. So I said Arizona

(04:32):
was gonna win and he did. Uh, it was a
It was a weird game, just how it kind of
came into into into light. But hey, three and l
is better than two and one and zero three for sure.
And you know, yes it was a little sloppy. Yes,
you would want it to be a little bit more
sound of a win. Yeah, But anytime you get a

(04:53):
win over a Kansas State and I know Kansas State
isn't good, right, it's a confidence boost reputation because it's
rapid and it's a team that, even though they're not
playing at their best, they could sneak up on anybody
and beat anybody any given night, depending on the situation.
Did you get the press cover today?

Speaker 3 (05:11):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (05:11):
What was said?

Speaker 3 (05:12):
You know, he talked a lot about one the penalties,
but they need to clean that up and that's going
to be evaluated this week and how they do go
about that. A lot of it coming in terms of
holding on the offense line and the perimeter as well
two special teams. You know, with the bye week, it's
an evaluation week. Do I think there's going to be

(05:33):
a change there? Probably not, but it gives them a
chance to go over everything because they think that they're
putting them and that they have the tools to be
a good special teams unit. They just haven't done it
thus far, and I would agree with them. And then
also about recruiting, this is a big recruiting week for Arizona.
Not in the sense that you're going to have recruits
on campus, but these coaches are going to go out

(05:54):
to California, Texas, let's say, Florida, Alabat, you know, wherever
they need to go, and they have chance to visit
these high schools and get on the recruiting channel.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
So you covering recruiting for rivals for a number of years, right,
what does three and oer mean recruiting compared to two
to one, one and two here here at Arizona, because
you have to qualify who we're at right or where
we're at.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
Yeah, you know, I think it helps and you're able
to show that the program's going in the right direction.
And that's been the theme with these recruits over the
last several years with Brett Brennan at the Helm is
they love the coaching staff, they love Brett Brennan, they
love the university, they love the atmosphere or two songs
the recruits, Okay, the recruits out there to make sure

(06:39):
the four star recruits, let's say, or the high.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
Level recruits atmosphere you said atmosphere just.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
The university of the campus as a whole, the weather, everything,
the whole nine. But their main question is can you win?
Can you develop? What can you do to get me
to the NFL? And that's the bottom line.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Yeah, well I'm telling them, yes, we can with you
in a uniform. Yeah we even a uniform and you're
competing for some time.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Well, and their main selling point right now, and it
was Jed's selling point to kind of kick start the
program again, is playing time. Yeah, you look defensively Right now,
Arizona is a sound defensive unit. But come next season,
Dalton Johnson's gone trade and Sukes has gone Genesis Smith.
If he's not in the NFL, it's gonna be hard
to keep them. I mean, we're in an area of

(07:24):
a transfer portal. He's gonna be one of the top
guys that teams look at. But I think he will
be in the NFL. So you're losing those three right
off the bat, and then graduation as well, So it's
gonna be tough to make up those numbers.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
So here's the question. So if you're a four star,
three star or whatever, and back in the day, you know,
before all this nil stuff, I think the kids cared
and I could be wrong. You can correct me that
they want. Well, if I go there, will I have
time to play? Will I get a chance to play? Right?
I think in basketball that's pretty much Can I play
right away?

Speaker 4 (07:57):
One?

Speaker 2 (07:57):
And maybe they can Maybe they can that good. Now
it's can I play? And how much am I going
to get?

Speaker 4 (08:03):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (08:03):
Can I play? What's what's the total of what I
can get? And also can you develop and put me
in the NFL?

Speaker 2 (08:10):
NFL? And I think that's the biggest thing is that
the same order is that the order I would.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
Say I would no, I would say that can you
develop and put me in the NFL is the biggest thing? Okay,
and then playing time and then pay well because if
you're a good program and you're able to develop kids
and put them in like a Utah and let's say
you don't have the nil to compete with a Georgia, Alabama, Texas,
but you're going after this four star kid that, yes,

(08:38):
I can go to Texas, maybe get paid a little bit.
I'm going to be a f on the death chart
compared to second or third at Utah or in Arizona.
Can you develop me to get me to the NFL?
And the question the answer for Utah is yes, can
you prove that? At Arizona?

Speaker 2 (08:53):
Yeah no. And they're back to being after Jed left,
they're back to being the team that has to prove that, right.
So we'll see. That's interesting because the recruiting has always
been the lifeblood. Yeah, always, and they can find some guys,
you know, diamonds in the rough or whatever, maybe get
a three four star every now and again, four five star.
They've only gotten a couple of five stars I think, right.

Speaker 3 (09:15):
I mean t Mac. But he was in here in
terms of rivals. He's the only five star recruit that
they have ever gotten. And he wasn't here originally he
was not. He was committed to Oregon and then their
coaching change happened. Uh, situations lined up. But credit to
Jed And that's kind of what you have to do
here in Tucson is not only did he lay the
foundation for Tetoro McMillan moving towards that recruiting process, but

(09:38):
even when he was committed, it wasn't hey, you should
de commit for Moregan. It was hey, we're over here.
Find you all your buddies are over here. You're gonna
play a lot. Oh, they have a coaching change coming.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
Just let you know. So we all know the talent
that he had. T mac had. So so does Arizona say,
h this because he's the NFL first round guy, early
first round guy. Uh? We developed him into this guy?
Or is he like Deandreayden? He was here good enough
to play and now he's in the pros because he

(10:10):
was that guy. No, because did they developed him?

Speaker 3 (10:14):
They developed him?

Speaker 4 (10:14):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (10:15):
For sure, they developed him. Did He was fantastic?

Speaker 3 (10:18):
Joaching staff developed. Okay, And I think that's the bigger question,
you know, for Arizona right now.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
Did either one I'm talking about did he I.

Speaker 3 (10:26):
Think Jed did? I think Jed. I think he got tougher.
I think he put on weight. I think he was
able to carry his body a little bit more.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
That happens. That happens when you get here. You have
to you know, you have to get stronger, bigger, better, faster.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
And I think I think again with the toughness when
he first got here again, his first touchdown catch was
in San Diego State and Uh snapped Dragon Stateium and
got lit up. After that, he was kind of hesitant
going over the middle as a freshman. That went away
as that went on, and then you saw his speed
kind of increase, his physicality increase. So I think they

(10:57):
did a great job of that. And the main thing
is they didn't screw it up because if he was
not a first round draft pick, it's hard to see
another five star group com infuse on.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
Hold on, well, this is uh Bryan the ball?

Speaker 5 (11:08):
Who's this?

Speaker 4 (11:10):
It's Brian?

Speaker 6 (11:11):
How are you that?

Speaker 2 (11:11):
Ryan? What's the word? Are you a little muffled? You're
a little muffled.

Speaker 6 (11:15):
Are you that you got it now?

Speaker 4 (11:16):
Yeah, just the same.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
But go ahead, are you the speaker?

Speaker 6 (11:20):
Yeah, we had hold on a second pull over. Yeah,
there we go a little bit.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
But we can understand you. What's up?

Speaker 6 (11:30):
Well, well, I could be the other night play very well.
Now I want to concern it the defenses.

Speaker 4 (11:37):
In the first half.

Speaker 6 (11:37):
They suldn't have this problem about tackling. And I know
Dianni gave up forty something yards in that first half,
but that's still you know, they they they made they
gave him a chance, you know, to be on the
field a little bit longer. Kansas date is not good
of a team. No, No, I could have been a.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Lot Yeah, no, I agree with you.

Speaker 4 (11:57):
It was.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
I don't understand where you tackled. Do you join you? No?

Speaker 3 (12:02):
I mean the scores should have been a lot better.
In Arizona's favorite it should have been bigger. But defensively,
I mean they're one of the better tackling units in
the country. I think for the first game they had
seven miss tackles, which is pretty good in today's college football,
and they've been averaging six to seven uh throughout the season.
So if you do that, I mean you're gonna end
up top five and tackling in college football, So I

(12:23):
don't really see that as a problem.

Speaker 4 (12:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (12:26):
Also one thing to the drop balls, Yeah, especially that
one guy very much. Oh my gosh, you know it
Cook catches those balls. You know, at least three of them,
you know those you know, we have a shot a
couple of touchdowns at least.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
Yeah, you know, the turnovers, I mean the penalties and
the drop balls. There was at least six, I think.

Speaker 6 (12:48):
Yeah, yeah, I told you know, I said the penalties
are still a problem. I said that last week. And
you know, and if we play okay, we go into
Iowa State, we can't have seven eight penalties?

Speaker 7 (12:59):
Were that?

Speaker 2 (13:00):
Yeah, you probably have more than that, probably more than that.
It's crazy. No, I agree with you. At least you did.
You had you walk away from the stadium.

Speaker 8 (13:10):
You know, I was very pleased. You know, that's the
game that we should have won. Yeah, you know, that's
three of them we should have won.

Speaker 4 (13:16):
And we won.

Speaker 8 (13:18):
You know, I mean everybody says, well it's Kansas State.
Well maybe we realize now that maybe.

Speaker 4 (13:23):
Okay we're Arizona.

Speaker 8 (13:25):
Yeah, yeah, we're not as bad as everybody seems to
think we are.

Speaker 9 (13:28):
No.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
The funny thing is you you left at least at
least not upset, right, and you say there, No, I.

Speaker 8 (13:33):
Mean I was pleased we won. Of course you're going
to have. This is our first true test, you know,
and we passed, you know, and then we got the week.

Speaker 4 (13:42):
Off and the coaches have a lot of things to
keep their attention, like.

Speaker 10 (13:46):
You guys need to be better on offense, you know.

Speaker 8 (13:48):
I know we gave up the one touchdowns at the
first you know, it's basically the only touchdown we've given
up by the defense all year.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
Yeah, I don't.

Speaker 4 (13:56):
I don't consider the pump one because they gave it.

Speaker 10 (13:58):
To them basically.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
Right. No, No, we got to go. Brian, thanks for
the call in this first half. Appreciate it. Thank you
here that that was good. We gotta col We gotta
go come back with Brian Peterson.

Good?

Speaker 4 (18:50):
Thanks for having me guys, Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
Of course we're doing some evaluating from Friday night. What
was your evaluation of the I don't know if it's
a big win, what kind of win was It.

Speaker 4 (19:01):
Was an important I think just winning the game first
and foremost is improvement off of last year. And the
way that they managed to win the game by falling.
They didn't fall behind so much as they gave up
the lead and then didn't fall apart. It was a
good sign of growth from the previous year. There were

(19:22):
questions asked afterwards that whether or not last year's team
would have been able to win this game, and I
don't think they would have, so showing that resiliency and
not doing the just oh here we go again, this
is how it always is type approach, just kind of
starting over and then winning the last I guess twenty
five minutes of the game, and that was very promising

(19:45):
to see.

Speaker 3 (19:46):
You know, one of the things that have gone into
Arizona's success in this three and oh start that you
didn't see last year is an identity, an identity, especially
on the offensive end. Just your thoughts on how the
offense has been going so far the season and the
improvements that we have seen from a year ago.

Speaker 2 (20:04):
Well, I mean, I did, so what do you if
you have an identity? What is it? It's up tempo,
but I was gonna laugh. I don't know.

Speaker 4 (20:15):
It's like, I think the offense is still trying to
figure itself out. But I think that they have because
we got this impression with having an air raid offensive
coordinator and an up tempo scheme and all that that
be throwing the ball out of the place moving really fast.
They are moving fast, and they are moving the ball.
But it's been much more of a run attack overall

(20:37):
than it has been a passing attack. The second game
was passing, but I think that's been the more inconsistent side.
I think that the offensive line's ability to block for
the run, particularly running up the middle, has been very,
very impressive. And if you are a team that is
able and willing to run between the tackles rather than

(20:57):
just on the outside, it forces teams to keep a
lot of players there in the middle, and that could
potentially open things up for the outside and deeper, especially
once they get figure out the whole issue with U
they're holding on the edges.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
Yeah, no, there's no question the running team they wish
my al was fantastic. I think there was one play
call that was to me it was questionable. Was the
half back pass or the running back pass the wide receivers? Yeah,
it was. It was what I said, you're killing them
on the run. Where did that come from?

Speaker 4 (21:30):
Yeah? Sometimes you mean offensive coordinators, Uh, they're their masterminds
in a certain way, and that sometimes they want to
show that they're the smartest guy in the room, and hey,
everyone is expecting me to keep zigging, so why don't
I zag? I mean we're going to try some things. Yeah,
I think, I mean, I think that's just that's what
that might have been. I mean, they they had been

(21:53):
running the ball so effectively and thought, hey, this would work,
and it just it didn't work out. But you're better
You're better off trying those things and seeing what's going
to work. Then just getting to the point where you
become so predictable and then what if they start to
stop you, then what do you do? So at least
you've put that, you know, if anything, they put that
on tape so that every opponent from here on out

(22:15):
has to be like, hmm, I wonder if that's there.

Speaker 2 (22:18):
You know.

Speaker 3 (22:18):
Defensively, we've seen the Arizona improve, especially in the running
game and the work that they've done against Avery Johnson
this past Friday. Just your thoughts on how coach Gonzalez
has gone about kind of re energizing this defensive unit.

Speaker 4 (22:35):
I mean, it just seems like they're so active and
so much in terms of flying to the ball, but
not just flying the ball, but like actually making the hit,
Whereas I mean last season and in previous coordinators, there's
always been this talk about being around the ball, but
you actually have to make the contact and stop it
right there. The mistackles have been very few compared to

(22:58):
last year, and you know that first hit is often
the one that is doing the job or at least
is slowing them down for other people to get there.
There's been a lot of that swarming. They've shown a
lot of aggression and it hasn't worked against them so far,
to the point where maybe they brought the house and
it didn't get there, and now there's a big play.

(23:18):
The only big play was just that one to start
the second half, the run where you know, one person
missed a lane and it didn't go. But for the
most part, they've been able to keep those things from happening.
And in particularly I mean being at like twenty two
percent on third down conversions for the opponents when it
was over forty last year. It's just been a huge development.

(23:41):
Even if you just keep it in the thirties, that's
just going to be great for your team overall.

Speaker 2 (23:46):
What does going three and zero here at Arizona mean
for Brenton?

Speaker 4 (23:54):
What it means is there's some wiggle room because we're
going through the rest of the conference schedule. I mean,
if the goal this year was to get back to
a bowl game, and that that would be a clear
sign of improvement from the year before. It means you
only have to win three of these remaining nine games,

(24:14):
and I'd say the Oklahoma State game, the next home
game is one which is a very very like that
they should win that game, whereas almost everything else on
the schedule is going to be it could go either
way type situation. If they went into conference schedule at
two and one, well, then now you need to win

(24:35):
close to half your games or more to be able
to get there. Not that they want to settle for
just six wins, but it just sets yourself up in
a situation where you don't have to win every game.
You just have to win enough games to be able
to show that improvement. And I mean this team could
potentially win eight games depending on how the schedule pans out.

(24:56):
I think their toughest game is the next one, their
second toughest game is the Life Alin against Asu everything
in between. They could win all of those games based
on what I've seen from those opponents and what Arizona
to show.

Speaker 2 (25:08):
Yeah, I don't disagree with you, I know, but I
don't disagree you because you're right. I think they're they're
in that grouping now of ten or whatever's twelve teams
that you, okay, could go maybe a three point swing
year or there go ahead with.

Speaker 3 (25:20):
Yeah, No, I definitely agree with that. When you look
at Nola fa Fida, and obviously the quarterback positions one
of the most scrutinized and criticized positions in sports, how
would you evaluate his three games start, because I've seen
fans like, man, he's improved from last year, and then
others like, man, this is this is all he's done
so far, which is a crazy thought.

Speaker 4 (25:41):
I think. I think he has been a very good
game manager, and he is. He has worked within the
confines of what was available. Yeah, he's had some poor
accuracy ones, and that first throw of the season to
Trace Bivey was one that could have easily been picked off,
and even Seth Dagias said that we probably shouldn't have
made that throw. But he has not been intercepted yet.

(26:03):
He has not turned the ball over, he hasn't fumbled
with all the amount of times that he's been running,
and just adding that element to it has really added
just so much more to his game. But he has
never had a stretch of three games as a starter
in his career without an interception until the first three
games of this season. So he's not making the critical errors.

(26:27):
He is not, you know, messing up plays. He's making
the most out of broken plays he is. I just
think he's been a very good game manager, and we
know that he can do it with his arm and
the fact that he's now showing it with his legs.
That could again affect the way teams have to scout
him and defend him, and it can open things up

(26:48):
for later on.

Speaker 2 (26:49):
So I have my thoughts. I say, if you agree
with me, what's the best or more surprising unit to this.

Speaker 4 (26:56):
Point, it's been the defense. I mean, I think just
a lot of that is because of the amount of
tention that was paid on the change at coordinator for
offense and a new scheme and all this, and maybe
that's what Noah needed and all this, and the offense
is still trying to figure itself out but has showed flashes,
whereas the defense take away two or three plays, has

(27:18):
been tremendous. Yes, I know it hasn't been the best opponents,
but it wasn't the best opponents last year either of
the first three games, and they gave up one hundred
and eleven points. It's twenty six points this year. It's
been a long time since they had I think it's
been twelve years since they had a three game span
where they gave up less than thirty points. They're not

(27:39):
giving up the big plays. They're not giving up on
third down. They haven't given up a passing touchdown. There's
just been so much that has been good from that unit.
And it hasn't been just like two or three guys.
It's been ten different guys who have been successful.

Speaker 2 (27:52):
Before I go there, I was going to ask both
of you guys I would have picked. I would have
picked the running game. To me, it's just been very good,
you know, consistent with depends who's running it, right and
Ishmael had a fantastic game that said we're gonna have
Danni Gonzalez here on the next hour. What do you
think he'd be good? Luck with that one question? He's
like Joe Bill Walton, what do you think the defense?

(28:16):
How can I say this reflects on him? Because it's
obviously a big difference and he's done tremendously, But how
do they feed off him?

Speaker 4 (28:27):
I mean, he's just such a fiery, energetic guy, and
I think like they know that he expects them to
be accountable and he's going to also be held accountable.
And I saw on the big screen after the big
run he went right up to Genesis Smith and was
it looked like he was laying into him, But I
think it was from a constructive manner, like you're better

(28:47):
than that, you know, that you can make this play.
But then rather than like trash the guy, it's okay, Nope,
you're still out there and I know that you can
do great things. And I think that they look at
him as the same way that like, if he he
puts in the bad makes the bad play call or
the bad alignment and it doesn't work out, that he's
going to admit, hey, that was wrong. He did that

(29:08):
in some of his long winded opening statements that he's
had so far this year when speaking to media, he
points out when he's like, Nope, that's bad coaching. I
should have done this. Definitely, I had the wrong thing
that he is. It's an equal accountability thing with his
players and with him. And I think when players know
that the coaches will take the blame for certain things

(29:30):
but then also put the blame on the players for
other things, they know that this is not just a
I'm going to pretend it's my fault when it's really
their fault, or I'm just going to throw the other
side under the bucks. I think they all respect each
other that. Yeah, No, I think that's pretty spawn on.
There's an accountability there, there's a trust there, and also what
you didn't see last year that I think stands out

(29:52):
this year. It trickles down to the rest of the
coaching staff. Defensively, I think last year you saw at
times maybe not the same energy level that you saw
from the top of other coaching positions, and that is
not the case this year. You look at Joe Salavea,
he's intense. You look at Bringle, he's intense. Safeties coach,
corners coach, They're all intense. It's the same intensity from

(30:16):
the top to bottom. So when you all have the
same message from each of your coaches and makes it
easier for a defensive unit. Oh absolutely. And Danny, you
know he has just like I said, with the expectations
and the accountability to the players, it's the same with
his assistant coaches, and that he expects things from them
and he knows that they expect things from him, and

(30:38):
it has to be a two way street.

Speaker 3 (30:41):
When looking at the special teams. And you know, that's
kind of the most criticized position right now out of
these three games, because it's been a Jackal and Hyde
mix there this week. I know Brent didn't really go
into great detail. He talked about self evaluation and how
they're going to go about fixing those issues. But at

(31:01):
what point I don't want to say, is how far
is the leash for a kicker, but who's doing double
work at you know, punting and kicking. How far I think?

Speaker 4 (31:14):
I mean, I would not be surprised at all to
see a change going into this next game. And the
most likely one would be to have he's a lovedson
be the phunter and let Talgana Medina just focus on
the place kicking. I think that that he has more
value there because I don't think that the other options

(31:36):
that the kicking Ian Wagner who does kickoffs, or Tyler
pursuing the freshmen are ready to be the guy in
that and he has shown that he can make kick.
He's missed some, but he also made three in that game,
so I mean those were just as important the punting.
We've seen it from the from training camp that there's
just something in his mechanics and the get off of these.

(32:01):
It was inevitable that one was going to get blocked.
We didn't think it was going to be one that
he just straight up dropped beforehand, which I mean, I
don't know what was going on with that, but I
would not be surprised to see Loves in that spot,
and it might just be the best move because you
also have to consider if Heaven forbid, he does get
one blocked in a game where he gets hit and

(32:22):
gets injured. Now you've just lost two starters, so it's
probably sooner rather than later, and the best time would
be here during this buy. Remember last year they made
a big change during the bye by switching the play
callers so on offense, and it's at least paid off
in that first game, So I would expect to see
something like that with Specialty.

Speaker 2 (32:41):
So we're just three weeks into the season. Typically you
benefit from a buy later in the year when things
are you know you need the rest. How does it
benefit you've ad or is it just doesn't benefit and
they just move on.

Speaker 4 (32:54):
Well, thankfully, these last two seasons there's been two buys
in the week, so it's not as big a deal
that you're having on early because you still have another
one later. I think they're going to play five in
a row here before they have their second by having
a bye between the non conference and the conference. Aside
from the rest and recovery side, I think it's a

(33:14):
reevaluation to now you're getting into the games that really
matter for the ultimate goals that you have for this team,
and you have more opportunity to move things around and
you know, almost like a second camp or like a
mini camp where you're testing out the new stuff, because
you're not going to have those opportunities to make major

(33:36):
changes during the season, at least for five weeks when
you're playing consecutively, and when you get down to having
played eight games with four to go with the second
by you probably aren't going to want to make major
changes at that point unless you absolutely need to. So
I think that's where the biggest value is of this buy.

Speaker 2 (33:53):
Before we go, I think I don't remember though I
asked you what you thought this season we're seeing rec
would be. Did you tell us and did this change anything?
This win?

Speaker 4 (34:06):
I had Arizona going six and six, and I'm pretty
sure I had them losing this game to Kansas State.
I think, I mean, yes, it's definitely it's made some changes,
and not just that it could mean like seven wins.
But I think I've thought this a couple of times
here in the first few weeks, that if they start

(34:26):
off three and zero, they're going to be Bowl eligible.
If they had started two and one, then a lot
of things would have to go their way and they
would probably have to pick off at least one team
that they weren't supposed to beat. But those were those
kind of evaluations before you see the teams on the
schedule and who they're playing. I think most of the
better teams or the best looking team so far in

(34:48):
the Big Twelve are not on Arizona schedule. They don't
play Utah, they don't play TCU, and they don't play
Texas Tech. And if like last year, they had all
of those and so it was a different time scenario.
I think that if they don't get the six wins now,
something really bad happened, like significant injuries to significant players

(35:10):
or their their whole approach just kind of collapsed and
they weren't able to fix it.

Speaker 2 (35:15):
Yeah, no, I totally agree. You said the same. What
did you say? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (35:18):
You know.

Speaker 3 (35:18):
I had them run seven to five at the beginning
of the year with a lost to Kansas State, But
other teams have surprised me a little bit in this conference.
Like a Kansas has played fairly well this season, even
with the lost to Missouri. So looking at it, I
think seven to five is still that mark for Arizona
for me, but it wouldn't shock me if they ended
up in eight and fourteen or six and sixteen. I

(35:40):
think they're in that six to eight win window.

Speaker 2 (35:43):
Yeah, okay, well, Brian, appreciate it. Thank you for your time.

Speaker 4 (35:47):
Yeah, thanks for having me, guys.

It's going to be a busy week here we are
with a bye week, right, win two weeks for less
than two weeks for Iowa State. But basketball starts Wednesday,
kind of a in a press conference situation, Wednesday with
the kids, with the students, I say kids, I should
say student athletes. Media day, media day for not Tommy
but the players players. Yeah, yeah, so that's Wednesday. I

(40:47):
was trying to make this happen. I don't think it's
going to happen that we can move the studio to
the u A and do the show from there, but
it's going to be very difficult given the circumstances. So
I think we'll just maybe if we can get a
callee from a player, that'd be great. So that's gonna
be Wednesday, and then the rest of the minor sports
or the athletics for Olympic sports are in action. Yeada, YadA.

(41:09):
I'm not gonna have any breaking news because kids aren't here,
My white kids aren't here. And maybe I'll go through.
We'll talk a little bit about what's going on, you know,
NFL stuff like that. Other than that, you can give
us a call five, two oh four, one, six, seventy four, forty,
take your calls. Maybe your thoughts on the game. Are
they going to finish what you thought they were going
to finish at the beginning of the year. I still

(41:31):
I still say six and six with a good chance
seven and five. I think Vegas had them at five
and a half. I think right, I thought that was
easy money five and a half, five and a half,
a place or two, but I think more five and
a half. I think that was easy money. To me,
it was easy money. Didn't bet it, didn't bet it.
I'm not sure why. But the thing is, it's not

(41:51):
so much about Arizona. Sometimes it's about how good the
other teams are. Some of these teams aren't that good,
and we just saw one that wasn't that good.

Speaker 3 (41:59):
Yeah, and you know, Bailey is kind of underperformed this season.
They've been wishy washing. Colorado looks awful right now. Colorado
does not look like they're in a good spot. Houston.
I know there are three and zero, but how good
are here? We Arizona? Yeah, so, I mean I look
at that as a potential win, and then you look

(42:19):
at a s U. Yes, I would agree. They're the
second artist team on the schedule, but they don't look amazing.

Speaker 2 (42:26):
They're not the Arizona you saw from last year. No, no,
So we'll see and then on any given day for
that game, you never know. But again, what's today, September fifteenth, Yeah,
you never know? In November's November right around thanks Giving
time with the roster. So I don't know if you
could disclose this, but I think you can. It's not
a scandal, I think. So your dad went to the game.
Did you just say this on the air right that

(42:48):
you dad went to the game? Yeah? And did you
say this on the air, yeah, Oh, that he sat
next to the Kansas City. He's sat around kind of
what was there?

Speaker 3 (42:57):
A lot of what do you mean what was there?

Speaker 4 (42:59):
Well?

Speaker 2 (43:00):
Was there they? What were they thinking about their team? Oh? Awful?

Speaker 3 (43:04):
Constantly yelling at their own team, how bad they were,
how bad they are, How this guy shouldn't be starting.

Speaker 2 (43:11):
I mean, and these are the fans that traveled with
the team. Yes, yes, how what an embarrassment to Kansas
State football? You know, stuff like that. It's funny because
there was Everyone has a fan base, right, some loyal,
so not so loyal, but you know, expect kind of
like Arizona basketball. You know, they're a spoiled group, if

(43:32):
I could say that. They are in travel probably knowing
the expectations or whatever, and probably being upset when they
get beat on the road. It's still tough to win
on the road, one, even when you have a good team. Yeah,
but that doesn't surprise me. But they bought they bought
a couple of thousand at least.

Speaker 3 (43:50):
Yeah, yeah, I'd say about probably like three or four.

Speaker 2 (43:54):
It helped with attendance, it definitely did, and you know,
it kind of reminded me back in the day when
not to the level I think this team did a
better job in general of when Iowa came to Tucson
and all those Iowa fans that philed Arizona Stadium, they
probably brought eight to nine. Yeah. I think Jay had
said that a lot of them have bought season tickets.

(44:16):
Oh really season tickets, so they would have the game
for sure. And what they did was they sold the
other games.

Speaker 3 (44:21):
Wow, that really helps.

Speaker 2 (44:22):
Yeah, yeah, no question, there was the schedule. Those guys
more often. But and you have a lot of violans here. Yeah,
so Midwesterners and Snowbirds and stuff like that. But no,
I think that that was the most impressive away crowd
I've ever seen Arizona. Yeah, outside of a issue not
named it.

Speaker 3 (44:40):
Yeah, yeah, not a s U and USC usually did
very well getting fans into the stands.

Speaker 2 (44:45):
And especially for big games and win Arizona was pretty good. Yeah,
we'll see what happens. So I think this is a
nice time to recoup, just to get you know, re
established again. You mentioned Noah, he's not the same guy
we saw two years ago. He's definitely not the same
guy we saw last year, which is a good thing.
He's better. We'll see how the offense treats him moving forward.

(45:08):
He's still having a lot of bad balls batted. It's
always and I think it's always going to be an
issue unless he's running away from the center bucket. Yeah, yeah,
you know.

Speaker 3 (45:18):
I think it's an improvement though, and I think you're
seeing him grow into the offense. The first game kind
of looked at a little rocky. Second game, he played
Weaver State and he did what he should do against
Weaver State, he threwed him up. And then this past
game I thought he could have had I think I
think he finished with one hundred and so many eight
total yards. The completion percentage wasn't great, but I thought
he could have easily been in that two thirty two

(45:40):
forty range if a couple of drop balls then it happened.
A couple of penalties then happened. That negated some big pickups.
So I honestly I give him a B plus for
the game. I know statistically it didn't look great, but
he had two rushing touchdowns. He rushed for a career
high forty eight yards. So I think you're seeing the
naturation of him developing in this offse.

Speaker 9 (46:01):
Hello, you're on the on Uh, I'm great.

Speaker 10 (46:11):
I had to tell you his quick story h I
walked out of the stadium. We're walking to our car
and we're with a bunch of Kansas State bands and
they're kind of a couple of them are crying the
blues and the one guy in the front says, don't
cry for them. He says, I paid for them to come.
And then he said, and don't cry, and and uh,
don't cry for them again, because he goes, I I

(46:32):
went to Ireland and saw this team. So he worked
over some money already. He took his whole family to Tucson,
and he took himself to Ireland.

Speaker 2 (46:43):
Yeah. Yeah, but they were all in a good mood.

Speaker 10 (46:45):
They were all in a good mood.

Speaker 2 (46:46):
Well, welcome to Tucson, thanks for spending money. And I
looked at that.

Speaker 10 (46:51):
We partied with a bunch of them at the tailgate
and uh, they came and cut off me buys and
we said, what the heck is that? They said, well,
we didn't we didn't bring shorts, so we had to
cut out.

Speaker 2 (47:00):
That's funny, that's funny. They could have gone to Dillards
and got some fifteen dollars shorts.

Speaker 20 (47:06):
I'm telling you, man, Yeah, but it was it was
a good I'm sticking by my nine nine wins team.
I'm telling you, I know in the early you didn't
like them against Colorado.

Speaker 2 (47:18):
We're going to beat them and uh nine wins. That defense,
I'll give you to to one. I'll give you to
to one.

Speaker 10 (47:25):
Okay, I'm taking it.

Speaker 2 (47:26):
You twenty, you're twenty, my ten, and you say nine.

Speaker 10 (47:29):
I say no, I'm taking it Troy Callum. That defense
is gonna take us. Noah's getting better every day and
and that running game is gonna be pretty dang good.

Speaker 2 (47:41):
So let me ask you, we're just talking about Noah
and you know him, you know the family, how would
you evaluate right? So far?

Speaker 10 (47:50):
A little bit above average and he's been a you know,
he's I think Brian said, no turnovers, clock or game
management's been great and he's just gonna it's gonna get
better as the as he settles in with this group
of guys. I mean, everybody has said losing that team
Mac and which is you know, his guy since eighth grade,

(48:11):
seventh grade. That had to had to be kind of
a shock and shoot, even you know, Kershaw has his
personal catcher, and it's a different story when he when someone.

Speaker 4 (48:22):
Else catches for him.

Speaker 10 (48:23):
So this is Uh, it's gonna take a few games.
And luckily I'm tired where you can take this bet too.
We're gonna beat I with.

Speaker 2 (48:31):
State, okay, two to one.

Speaker 10 (48:34):
Man, Yeah, I'm gonna be.

Speaker 3 (48:36):
Well, what what would you what would your production be for?

Speaker 2 (48:41):
I would say that.

Speaker 10 (48:44):
Twenty four seventeen.

Speaker 2 (48:46):
Twenty four to seventeen. And what made you think this?

Speaker 10 (48:50):
Because I knew the defense was gonna be good with
Genesis and and Johnson and those guys coming back. And
now that defensive line was what's the name number zero
there in the middle.

Speaker 3 (49:03):
Uh yeah, McKnight, knight.

Speaker 10 (49:06):
Yes, man, this this defense is playing good and and
and uh, I'm telling you that. And then the linebackers.
We found the linebackers too that we were scared with
with our guy leaving the Washington and and these transfers that.

Speaker 4 (49:21):
Come in and man, this defense flies around and.

Speaker 10 (49:24):
Hits a ton and and it's just fun to watch.
And then I'm telling you with that running game and
then just Noah getting a little bit better every week
and this bye week, we're gonna we're gonna do do
well up there.

Speaker 2 (49:37):
So let me let me ask you. I want you
to be a salesman we got about a minute or
so of Uh you saw the crowd of maybe forty thousand,
you were one of them. What would you tell the
fans that don't show up, don't go just maybe they
just don't go. How would you convince them to go
watch this team? You know?

Speaker 10 (49:53):
And I am the salesman, I mean my group of
friends that that don't go. I'm always just saying, hey,
go check it out. It's a fun time, come to
the tailgate. I can't there's no reason why Tucson is
not showing up. And Troy you we've talked about it too.
I don't get it. I don't get it, and I
don't think I ever will. Why there's not fifty thousand

(50:16):
in that stadium every week? And you know, a shoot
for me to walk to my car, that's a major
I'm gonna be calling you guys both for the wheelchair
one day. But it's it's tough. I think the parking
and then obviously the heat and all that stuff gets it.
But hey, gosh, there's that. But you know what Dona

(50:38):
Zoos showed out.

Speaker 2 (50:39):
You don't want super happy.

Speaker 5 (50:40):
With that very much.

Speaker 2 (50:41):
So in fact, I was watching them from the side
and I said, I gotta get them on because you know,
we criticized, you know, Jane and I had for a
long time. They've been out the last two three years.
They've done the great job.

Speaker 10 (50:53):
Yeah, and they didn't leave.

Speaker 2 (50:55):
They didn't leave.

Speaker 10 (50:57):
I was super happy about that.

Speaker 2 (50:59):
Yeah, no question.

Speaker 10 (51:00):
But I'm gonna keep talling. So the next two weeks,
three weeks, I'm gonna keep sealing and hopefully I bring
a crowd of twenty next game.

Speaker 2 (51:07):
Okay, keep that twenty in mind, because you got twenty
if they go nine, and then twenty if they.

Speaker 4 (51:11):
Beat the if.

Speaker 10 (51:15):
So okay, all right, you guys, thanks show.

Speaker 2 (51:18):
Thank you. Hey, we got about a minute, so we'll see.
We'll see what happened. Nine wins. That's asking a lot joy,
that's that's a great year. That's a massive Nobody would
expect that, No, no one. Yeah, and you would have
to pull off an upset or two. Yeah, I'm looking
at two. Where are you going to pick those off? Kansas?

Speaker 3 (51:36):
I think I al would say it's doable. Really, I
think it's they haven't looked great. They've looked a little shaky.
Offensively thought I was I would say, I guess I'll
just give me a guess of the spread. If I
had to pick right now, because I already had, I
would say what I would say minus five and a half.

Speaker 2 (51:55):
I'm saying eleven. I'm saying eleven.

Speaker 3 (51:57):
Okay, if it is take Arizona and gonna be that month.

Speaker 2 (52:01):
Oh wow, wow, wow, okay, you said five will.

Speaker 3 (52:03):
Be one possession.

Speaker 2 (52:04):
We'll see. We'll see what they came out with the
kickoff break. Yeah, four o'clock, four o'clock, six o'clock. There,
four o'clock a here ESPN, perfect time at the day.
You know, I'm sure one of fans will say it's
too hard to watch it at four o'clock. That a
lot of stuf's going on at four o'clock. Stop breaking
on the fans, man, I love these guys. Hey, let's
take a break and come back on the other side.
