Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services Insure
your most prized possessions.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
But good afternoon, everybody.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
Welcome to Wire on the Ball here on Fox Sports
fourteen fifteen. I'm Steve Rivera, and today with me is
my usual Tuesday guy, Dave Silver Dave.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
What's worth mister Tuesday Tuesday.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Mister almost almost October, almost almost there. And then guess
well we'll putty end up doing and then you'll move
me to Wednesdays. Anyway, we'll think about baseball. Imagine that,
and everybody will, like the people who listen to me
will think, oh, finday, he's found his ways.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
I've got one baseball story for you.

Speaker 4 (00:44):
Go Diamondbacks all of a sudden in the playoff picture,
possibly somehow, Troy, and they're only a game and a
half back.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Troy told me about that yesterday. Yeah, shocking.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
They won four straight. Awod, I don't know. Everyone ahead
of them keeps losing.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
Oh no, they are playing pretty they're playing much better
in the last month or so. But yeah, they're only
like one and a half games out of the last
wild card spot.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Well you how many games you've been to this year? Yeah,
well I went to the games in the Midwest, but
nothing okay, So okay, So you know everybody loves baseball.

Speaker 5 (01:13):
Right.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
A month ago this team was given up for Dan. Yeah,
people were saying, oh, they're sucked, they're not going to
do anything, and then here they are. Yeah, so either
you're with them or you're not with them.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Yeah, well that's kind of sports. Oh really, I didn't notice.
That's kind of how it works. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:29):
I mean again, i'd be fun to look back at
some of my texts with my children about the Diamondbacks
over this last year, where it's so many games where oh,
yeah they're gonna win.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Oh wait, they just lost.

Speaker 4 (01:38):
I mean there's so many blood saves and shff like that.
I mean once just happened on Friday night at Minnesota.
Then they win the next two games there.

Speaker 5 (01:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
I think this is for straight because Troy Troy, who's
a diving back fan, talked about how they were rolling,
and I said, aren't they out?

Speaker 2 (01:52):
I didn't know they're close.

Speaker 4 (01:53):
Yeah, it was at least three straight because I did
lose Friday, but then on Saturday, Sunday and then last night.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Monday, three okay, maybe yeah, may be more so good
who they're still they're chasing the mess again.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
You were talking wild that's all they're knowing for is
a wildcard.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Yeah yeah, okay, So we'll talk more about that as
we get closer. So hectic day for me, trying to
find guests and busy time even though the football team
is out this week. Did you listen to our show yesterday?

Speaker 2 (02:20):
I did not. It's nice. What did I miss? You missed?
I thought?

Speaker 3 (02:25):
And I got a couple of texts about it, you know,
a couple of maybe two three about our interview with Gonzalez.
Coach Gonzalez, he was a lot. He was fantastic and
people listened to it and he thought it was fantastico
And he didn't go like on sixteen minute rents. It
was just a discussion, you know, him coaching New Mexico.
But it means here how much he how much of

(02:46):
a better coach he is, because now he understands what
it tasted the upperah to be the guy and then
maybe helping out the guy now as an assistant. Just
his defense, what it means to him and the players
involved and things like that. I talked a little about Abucre.
He you know where he grew up, and I grew
up in Santa Fe. So a little about that, eating
at Pokemon moms stuff like that, you know.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
That's yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Yeah, I had to tell him because he said, there's
no place in town that has who is? Yeah, there is.
You get a good to one. Yeah, and he's gone.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
So he likes it. No again.

Speaker 4 (03:15):
I was talking to a buddy this weekend too about
how Arizona's defense has kind of been the story I
think for her, especially the way they played the other day,
and how Kansas State's quarterback, who everybody was kind of
touting is one of the better ones in the.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Big twelve didn't look good.

Speaker 4 (03:29):
No, you know, and I don't know if that was
the u of A's defense or what, but he just didn't.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Look like he never really ever got comfortable.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Were you there?

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Did you go? I watched? Oh you watched it, okay?

Speaker 3 (03:37):
So uh, like he asked Troy yesterday, was there any
time anytime that you said, Okay, they're winning the game
and then you said.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Oh no, they could lose this. Why?

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Well, just because we've seen it before, and that's why
I ask that's kind of what. Yeah, you know, maybe
maybe this team's got something a little extra that yeah,
you're not gonna you know, fold completely under pressure. There
was you know, certainly some times where it didn't look
good in the fourth quarter, but I mean they had
the game in control really throughout the night. Well, the
person I was with, I said, they can't lose this game.

(04:10):
I mean Brennan. I said, Brennan can't lose this game.
He had these guys by the ingers and he can't
let this game go.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
We just can't.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
And he didn't, you know, after the run back and
to start the second half and then the drop the
punt and all that stuff, they held strong and then
they won.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
He just couldn't lose anything and he did.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
That was a game, Yeah, I mean going starting the
season three and oh is obviously as good as it
can be. And that would have been a tough one
to ye kind of you know, Oh, now we got
to go to the Big twelve and you know, who
knows what Iowa State's going to be. They've kind of
been up and down themselves, but it'll be a big,
big night, big game for them too.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
And you know this, had they lost the emotional tollt
it could have taken. Oh no, we tried our hardest
and we didn't win. Now we got to go, like
you say, in the Big twelve. But now three and oh,
you're thinking, hey, we might have something.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
They're halfway to a bull bit. Yeah. I mean really,
if you think with nine left, with a lot of games.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
To go, and you know they're they're playing well, and
look at some of the other teams that maybe you know,
the Kansas States of the world, who everybody thought was
going to be you know, super super good, super good.
They're what one and three, they've already played four games.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
Well, that's the whole thing, David. You and I have
covered teams here and abroad, and this team is is
pretty good or good. I should don't say pretty good
good that we know of because don't paid anybody. But
they haven't paid anybody, so so you have to kind
of qualify that with that. I'd like to make analogies
to horse racing. You have one hundred thousand dollars horse

(05:33):
of facing the fifty thousand dollars horse. One hundred thousand
dollars horse should beat them every time. We just don't
know how pricey this Arizona horse is.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
Right, and maybe it's just our lack of knowledge of
the big twelve and like who's gonna be the big
star stud team. I mean, we're so used to seeing, Oh,
you know, we gotta worry about Oregon. I gotta worry
about UCLA, and you know, excuse me USC and you
know Stanford sometimes or ASU. But I don't know who
the big team is to worry about other than you know,
getting to Issue near the.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
End, right, and then Iowa State, which is the next
opponent because they beat Kansas State. But now that now
that win is kind of like, Okay, maybe it wasn't
as good as we thought.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Right, and they didn't really overpower anybody since then.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Anyways, and that was the first game of the season too,
so you know, true take it for what it's worth.
So here's there's that. So let me just kind of
go through today's show. I'm leading the board here, but
my boy Kobe is supposed to be in anytime now.
But we're gonna have Eric Rhodes in sometimes a guest here,
but he's going to talk about the Arizona bole. We're

(06:31):
about three months away from that already, and you know
where they're sitting, they're gonna have Erlacker here for a big,
good lunch. I think three in the month or so.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
I read that.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
We'll talk about that and then see what else is
going on. And then in the second hour. I haven't
talked to this woman in a while, one of my favorites,
Miss Judy McDermott with t first first tea ye, formerly
of the Conquista Doors. And see what she's up to.
She she threw three names at me. They're at a
big event this week.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Cancel.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
Let her talk about that. You know, they do a
great job with other the kids.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
Playing, some of her player from the first team. Probably
I'll let her talk about it. She sent me the text.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
Uh, so we haven't talked about that, and she's, you know,
very active in the community. So we'll do that, you know,
kind of get away from football for a little bit.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Basketball media day tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
Yes, you're saying, so basketball is already, you know, already
down to that kind of stuff.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
We would never have it this early. I mean, that's
honestly the Red Blue games around the corner too, right, Uh?
The third I think it is the third? Yeah, because
what's the day, the sixteenth, almost two weeks of more
than two.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Weeks doing that around the football weekend, right.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
Yeah, yeah, the fourth is a big game. We get
to hear Shack, that's right, the Shack experience. Tom is
it Tommy, Tommy the DJ, And then I forget the
third person. I don't think I'm gonna make that make
that one no by break dancing and all that stuff
ended when I broke it in try.

Speaker 4 (07:58):
I mean it's funny because you know, we always kind
of joke about well when does when does you know
when football struggles?

Speaker 2 (08:02):
When does basketball season start? You know?

Speaker 4 (08:04):
And like you said pretty early with with with you know,
a red Blue game, and just a lot of mystery
around this team too. I mean, you know, what about
four of the guys returning and everybody else's.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
Yeah, brand new.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
But but you know what, Dave, and you've been around
this excitement everybody. I shouldn't sy everybody. A lot of
people are excited about this season. Uh, with the recruiting
class that they have coming in. Uh, the guys that
came back, you know, Bradley and now Crevis is returning
and some of the others.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
But there's a lot of questions when you're playing in
a lot of young kids.

Speaker 4 (08:38):
Model of young kids, and that schedule is brutal before
New Year's really, I mean it's going to be his
big test to see how fast these kids can grow
up and you know, get together as a team. Who's
going to be you know, basically his top what eight
players usually? How how it plays out, and he's gonna
have to sit.

Speaker 3 (08:53):
And maybe wait, So tomorrow's schedule, this is what it's
gonna look like. I'm going to be in with Blake
Eager at the udio. They're having media day at the
exact same time the show is going to be going on.
But they're doing us a pretty good favor or a
big favor. They're gonna have players available to us to
talk on the phone live on the show. So they're
going to have like maybe the top eight players come

(09:14):
by I come through every five minutes or so talking
about their situation.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
So that'll be fun.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
I don't know who they are, so we'll just kind
of have a if you follow us on on social
it'll be like a basketball or something kind of showing.

Speaker 4 (09:25):
Yeah, they're new to us too. I mean you haven't
had a chance to talk to them yet.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
No, what we have because they sent some people the
press conferences and August in September, you know, talking to
them and maybe we'll get to Lebron's son for maybe
three or four minutes.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
That's going to be an interesting spectacle, especially early in
the year.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
You know, if it shows is he going to make
the team? Is he going to play?

Speaker 5 (09:50):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (09:50):
I doubt it, to tell you the truth, I think
he's more of a project than a guy, a team guy,
and you know he's here to play obviously, but to
kind of also get away from Los Angeles and just
to kind of maybe have an independent life.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Yeah, I'm just speculating. I don't know that to be fun,
but something like that.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
But he might, you know, see some action, you know
when they're blowing people out, or maybe he gets in
the top nine to ten rotation.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
We'll see.

Speaker 4 (10:14):
Well, if he's like his brother, he wants to be
in the NBA like in one year. So is that
going to work here?

Speaker 2 (10:20):
I don't know. I will see.

Speaker 3 (10:21):
We'll see, not usc no, but looking forward to all
this tomorrow. Colepete and some of the other ones coming
through the the as they you say, the business, the
car wash, Yep, they kind of go through different stages
of the media. So that'll be fun. So we'll wait
for Erica Rhodes. I'm waiting for my guy Kobe. If
you'd like to give me a call here A five

(10:43):
to two four one six seventy four forty. I have
about four minutes if you want to talk about three
minutes just to talk about whatever.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
Lots lots of quarterback injuries in the NFL. I know
people are talking about that today. There's like five starting
quarterbacks already out after you know, two games. Strange, I mean,
maybe not strange, but it's it happens every year, you know,
for those of us who play fantasy, I had hate
to admit that I am one of those. Every once
in a while, I'm like looking at my roster like, wow,
I thought I was going to do good, and already I.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
Got, you know, a couple of injuries here and there.

Speaker 4 (11:14):
Well you don't do it, I know, But anyway, it's
a good way to follow the sport just to kind
of get an idea who's who's.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
It's also a good way to get a heart attack
because you're worried about Oh I got to talk to.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
That's not that bad though, oh man, what am I
going to do?

Speaker 3 (11:29):
You know?

Speaker 4 (11:29):
Even Rams coach Sean McVay. I guess injured his foot.
Oh do you have turf do something like that? Yeah, so,
I mean there's all kinds of injuries.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
So so does what's his name, who's uh, he's not mad.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
He's gonna have surgery. Yeah, so he's going to be
out for like right. So I good to hear that.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
You just chimed subjects because we have like three minutes
or two minutes.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
You've been listening to the hut the huddle. Yeah, it
was good. Yeah, those guys are fun to be with.

Speaker 4 (11:57):
I had not heard Tom Tonercliffe in a long time, so
he was the quarterback when I got here, So, you know,
good one of the old guys.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
Good guy, was he good? He's just a good sounded
really good.

Speaker 4 (12:07):
I didn't know about this business he has with this
kind of flex flexes in Burbank.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
Yeah, he's trying to get some here in the Phoenix
and the TUSSA. Dude looks good, yeah, I asked him.
And he looks buff, you know, buff not but in
a good condition. And I said, how could I because
we're about the same age, We're all about the same ages.
How can I look like Hughs and then the Countanies
who give me grief all the time. You have to
work hard, I said, never mind.

Speaker 4 (12:32):
It's funny though, a few of the guys like remember
Donnie's sailing. Yeah, he kind of went into that world too. Yeah,
weight lifting, not weightlifting, but weaight stores and sell that equipment.
And you know, Lamont has kind of yea been through
that as well. But now they sounded good. It was
good to have their perspective and they sound like they
were just two brothers just going.

Speaker 3 (12:50):
Back and forth and you're trying to play referee, right right, No,
it's great because exactly that. And there's one guy and
I said this when when the two were on the
show before we decided to do a show together, was
that how much Lamont admires his brother. And in most
families that doesn't happen very much in terms of there's
always a friction and there's always something, but Lamont really

(13:11):
idolizes Ricky because because who he is one and two
how he played.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
Yeah, it was good, you know.

Speaker 4 (13:18):
And then they were followed by the Singleton Twins kind
of right after that, and it's sort of the same way.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
Maybe they just couldn't be.

Speaker 4 (13:26):
Jealous of each other. I mean, Chris goes on and
plays in the NFL. Kevin, you know, has never really
got there. I don't think because of his illness.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
He was sick. Has done well and gotten better.

Speaker 4 (13:35):
But again, we had that little stretch of almost ten
years of those two brothers and the two twins.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
Yes, it was a cool story to follow.

Speaker 3 (13:43):
It's funny because I talked about that story with the Huntleys,
you know, were they always together? Was always together because
singletons were always together. If you remember, we're in the
sunglasses six ft six, big imposing dudes, And I said,
did you and they said no, They weren't always hanging
out together. But Chris and Kevin were always together and
kind of intimidating looking.

Speaker 4 (14:02):
Yeah, were there. They were good. They were good kids though. Yeah,
very good talking to remember. Again, I didn't have much
of a chance to really do this, but I did
have two years of doing the Wildcat football games, and
one of those years was when they got to campus.
So I did get a chance to like be on
airplanes with those two guys flying to wherever. So I
got a chance to meet them when they were like eighteen.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
Yeah, no, very good guys, We're gonna take the break
and come back and get a hold of Eric Rhodes.

Speaker 3 (19:15):
Kobe's here, Kobe my intern. He's a guy like Chare.
He doesn't need a second name.

Speaker 5 (19:21):
That's I was gonna say. Listen, that kid better.

Speaker 13 (19:24):
Be a stun because if if you're living up to
that name, that's some my standards you've got to live
up too.

Speaker 2 (19:30):

Speaker 3 (19:31):

Doesn't matter you say, Kobe, and you better just step
off here at three am shooting undred by yourself.

Speaker 5 (19:42):

Speaker 3 (19:43):
Yeah, so so Eric, Uh, you busy? You got about
three months left before the game.

Speaker 5 (19:50):
I mean, I can't be that busy if I'm on
your show. I'm just kidd what the hell.

Speaker 13 (19:55):
I love being here with you guys. No, it really
is busy. We're we're definitely in that time we're about.
You know, I'm a huge Christmas fanatic and stuff for
all you Christmas fans at the one hundred days so
Christmas today, which means it's one hundred and two days
till the Snoop Dog Arizonable presented by Gin and Juice
by Dry and Snoop. So yeah, one hundred days out.

(20:16):
It's definitely go time. In fact, we have a lot
of the Gin and Juice executives in Tucson today joining us.
We're gonna do a little dependent celebration for Yeah over.

Speaker 5 (20:26):
At the Monica. If your listeners.

Speaker 13 (20:28):
Are out and about and want to stop by between
six and ten can try the newest flavor of Gin
and Juice.

Speaker 5 (20:36):
Steve. Steve, you're a mango guy, but I'm.

Speaker 3 (20:40):
A mango sushi mango guy. That's the only time. Yeah,
how'd you know that? That's you pulled that one out of somewhere.
Research man, damn chat GTB I B I whatever that
thing is. That's whatever chat chat GPT.

Speaker 5 (20:57):
Thanks Dave, Yeah, Dave, there is that you straight.

Speaker 2 (21:00):
I got to calm this guy down.

Speaker 4 (21:02):
What when those guys come to town, besides having you know,
gathering like that, what else are they doing? You know,
here a couple months away from the game, the Gin
and Juice guys.

Speaker 13 (21:10):
So we we we walked to the stadium a little bit.
We spent some time at the University of looking at
different things. You know, if he went to the game
last year, we built a whole house for Gin and
Juice and says some new ideas on how to not
only meet Tucson's newest best friend Snoop Dogg there at
the tailgate, but make it a great experience for everyone.

(21:32):
And then Dave to further answer, how we can get
it a little bit more exposed in stadium, make it
a little more accessible for the fans. So, you know,
it's one of the the biggest challenges anybody running an
event and a stadium goes up against his you know,
drink lines and concessions and people wanting to get out
their seats and a good time to do that. So
a lot of logistics planning, because one hundred and two

(21:54):
days may sound like a lot, but it's going to
go really quick.

Speaker 3 (21:56):
It's funny, don't you Why don't you just mimic the
Super Bowl from a few years ago when they had
the map of self Central?

Speaker 2 (22:03):
Was it? Where was it? Yeah, you could do to you.

Speaker 5 (22:08):
If I had that budget.

Speaker 13 (22:11):
We think if I had a Super Bowl budget, there's
a lot I would do. But no, it's you're gonna
see some fun things this year. You know.

Speaker 5 (22:17):
We Snoop Dogg is under.

Speaker 13 (22:21):
Under happy contract for another couple of years, so he's
here this year, next year for sure, and then hopefully
a couple more. So we're already working on a couple
of things that, you know, we want to make sure
it's a new experience if you saw it last year.
And but more of some of the fun things we
do is you know, one of the things we sort
of hug our hats on over the years is we're
making an experience for everyone, whether it's just the tailgate

(22:42):
or anybody there. We want to make sure there's something
you walk away going.

Speaker 5 (22:46):
That was fun.

Speaker 3 (22:47):
What is this budget that you talk about. I don't
know what that means, but go ahead.

Speaker 13 (22:51):
Well go ahead, I mean you two big you know personalities,
you're just rolling in. It's got to work.

Speaker 4 (23:00):
Just chicken strips for lunch dollars didn't even bring me any.
Is the conference tie ins? They're still the same the
MAC in the.

Speaker 13 (23:10):
Mountain West, Yes, correct, but only for this year. And
in fact it's a great question though, because there is
daily conversations.

Speaker 5 (23:18):
This is the end.

Speaker 13 (23:19):
Of every bolt works in six year cycles, so this
is the end of the contract with every bowl's affiliations.
So we're all renegotiating to maybe we stay the same,
Maybe we look for some new conference tie ins, maybe
you move up a position, Like right now we're the
number two in both the MAC and the Mountain West
pick which doesn't necessarily mean second place. It's once the

(23:41):
champion has gone, we can pick who we'd want, who
we think is a great fit to come to Tucson.
So we're negotiating all those things daily, uh, to figure out.
The biggest domino everyone's waiting for is the CFP to
see if the playoff will expand and what that looks like,
but I imagine you're going to see just a conference
in alignment to a lot of New Bowl conference tie

(24:03):
ins over the next probably four to six months.

Speaker 3 (24:06):
So what's on the menu for that luncheon you're going
to have with Brian Irlacker?

Speaker 13 (24:09):
And then what a great goal to I don't get
to be part of that group. Yeah, we're really excited
to have Brian. You know, it's it's funny when you
do a luncheon like that, you never think of that's
going to be one of your biggest anxieties. But you know,
we had gronk w We've had Ty Bruski, We've had
Trevor Hoffman, we had the chairman of the CFP. Last year,
you had had Francona. You know, you start to be like,

(24:30):
oh my gosh, who can we get sort of stay
in that echelon. So Ben Schulick, who you guys know,
who worked at Arizona, the University of Arizona Fall long time,
and we're grateful to have him on our team now,
really just reached out to his team and just said,
you know, he's living in Phoenix now, maybe he'd want
to come down. And his team was really great in him.
He and his wife be most of the communicating, so

(24:52):
very excited to have her Locker. You guys know, there's
a huge Chicago presence here in Tucson, so I don't
get to be part of the lunch and tasting team
to see what's going to be on the menu. But
you know, I'm sure it'll be a pretty pretty typical
lunch and fair for a business launch in twos And
when is it not chicken tenders?

Speaker 5 (25:11):
When is that?

Speaker 13 (25:13):
Is October the thirtieth. It starts about eleven thirty am
at the Tusum Convention Center. Tickets on sale now, Dave,
you're the best for setting me up.

Speaker 5 (25:22):
Oh my gosh. Oh yes, Tickets on sale now at.

Speaker 13 (25:24):
The Arizonable dot com, like the Ohio state the Arizonable
dot com.

Speaker 3 (25:29):
So you guys know, I'm from New Mexico, so Erlect
played there and he's from southern New Mexico. Uh yeah,
And I'm friends with Carla Carli Garrett. Everyone knows Carla right,
and she grew up in my neighborhood. And she says, Steve,
I want you to remember one thing. I am the
best athlete to ever come out in New Mexico. And
I'm not want to argue with Carla. I'm not Bryce,
she said. She even mentioned Brian, Brian's number two. I said, Carlo,

(25:53):
whatever you say with me goes.

Speaker 13 (25:55):
I'm gonna say, anybody who knows Carla knows what you say.

Speaker 4 (25:58):
Yes, man, I'll set you up with this question as
well too. I noticed the Bowl's presence of the high
school football games. Is that going to be how things
roll here through what November?

Speaker 2 (26:11):
Basically?

Speaker 13 (26:12):
Yes, I mean, you know football we use the hashtag
as the kids say, now football is family.

Speaker 5 (26:18):
So really a couple of years.

Speaker 13 (26:19):
Ago, Dell ar By it you guys know well also
came up with this idea in injunction with the National
Football Foundation here in some Arizona with Tim Kish and
it's it's brilliant. And so it's Friday night lights and
so every Friday we're at a different high school kind
of just featuring the game. It's not necessarily like the
Marquee matchup, but you know, it's just trying to hit

(26:41):
high schools all over seven Arizona. Like a few weeks,
I'll be down or over, I should say, at Thatcher
Safford over and Thatcher and they're just so excited to
have us. We're going to Rio Rico this year. We
were down at Douglas a few weeks ago, so really
trying to spread our wings at Ironwood Ridge this past
weekend and they'll be out of dam fine next weekend.

(27:03):
We take our giant inflatable helmet. We have some good giveaways,
give away a couple of tickets to the Snoop dogg
Arizon bah blah while we're there, and really just kind
of try to bring some some notoriety to maybe the schools.
You don't get it as much as the others, you know,
because there's always that handful of the powerhouses who get
a lot of the deservedly get a lot.

Speaker 5 (27:23):
Of the media attention.

Speaker 13 (27:24):
So we're just trying to make sure everyone else has
seen we're doing under the lights as well. So I
think we're doing seven flag football games as well for
the ladies this fall.

Speaker 2 (27:33):
Nice.

Speaker 3 (27:33):
So you're gonna probably be a hit and attacher. Hey,
aren't you the guy that was on TV? Can you
sign my football here?

Speaker 13 (27:40):
You know that might be one of the only people
who still remember me, But now I just get the
he was familiar? Did you change my attires.

Speaker 2 (27:51):
Real quick?

Speaker 4 (27:52):
Because because Okay, I just I still get didn't you
use to do the weather?

Speaker 5 (27:58):
Did I think you were on last time?

Speaker 3 (28:01):
Dave?

Speaker 5 (28:02):
I mostly did mistake NT Oh, yeah, yeah I did that.

Speaker 2 (28:06):
I did that with that, I think.

Speaker 3 (28:08):
So if Dave has to control me, if Dave has
to control me here in the studio, how do you
control Ali?

Speaker 13 (28:14):
Yeah, we don't. There's two things I've learned in life. One,
don't try to control a lawyer that don't go badly.
And then with all that, you know, it's just your radio, guys,
I tell you it's no filter.

Speaker 5 (28:29):
It's gonna be what it is.

Speaker 13 (28:31):
I mean, he's one of our he's one of our biggest.
You have Bobe ever once in a while you think
you're on air, but he's like, sorry, we're having technical difficulties.
But you know, Ali is is you know, one of
the most outgoing personnels you meet in our community, and
it's good to have him on your team. I wouldn't

(28:52):
want him against me, I'll put it that way.

Speaker 4 (28:55):
He's one of the most important people I think in Tucson. Really, yeah,
you know.

Speaker 5 (29:01):
There's not a lot he doesn't have his hands in.

Speaker 3 (29:03):
Yeah, right, yeah, no question. In fact, uh, you know, Blake, Right,
we talk about this all the time. Kim Ray Flora
is kind of like just you know, the people, the
kim Adares of the world.

Speaker 2 (29:14):
This lower, not lower.

Speaker 3 (29:16):
This next generation of people who are in the community,
the Edmond Marcus could come up with these great things
ideas that we could probably use for the future. And
and and they're doing a great job at least setting
the setting the standard.

Speaker 13 (29:31):
Yeah, I mean, it's it's a group that I get
to fortunately around a lot, and it's people who really
care about this community. It's it's the foundation of the Arizonable.
Actually is Tucson needed something like this And you know,
many years ago I'm in my gosh eighth year here now,
people used to say Tucson needs this win.

Speaker 5 (29:52):
And I think Busan.

Speaker 13 (29:53):
Has responded well, especially to our game and and many
know the wonderful things that are happening here in the community. Uh,
you know, Steve, you're you're a big part of our
tour which I'll say this kindly and not meant to
be negative, went through sort of a rough patch several
years ago, but man as that thing turned around to
just become again one of the great marque events in

(30:15):
our community. That's known nationwide and we're trying to follow
suit at the Snoop Dog.

Speaker 5 (30:19):
Earson a Ble and a.

Speaker 13 (30:21):
Lot of those people you mentioned are hugely helpful in
that effort.

Speaker 2 (30:26):
Good stuff.

Speaker 4 (30:27):
Yeah, So what will what can Snoop do now that
he's got some experience here, How will he you know,
maybe even pump it up even more here in the
next month or two.

Speaker 13 (30:37):
All of his followers, well, you know, I mean, he's
he's everywhere, so like he's doing the Voice right now,
or he's filmed the Voice. So if you if you
are a fan of the Voice, you'll watch and you'll
you just might see the Arizona Ball helmet show up
in the Voice and make some some guest appearances. Uh,
he wears our clothes sometimes, which is just really cool

(31:00):
to see.

Speaker 5 (31:02):
You know.

Speaker 13 (31:02):
He was on They did a really great feature last
night on Monday Night Football about his youth football league,
and we're really focusing on that. We're going to bring
back again some of the youth football league from Los
Angeles will bust him in for that week and they're
going to play a couple of exhibition games against some
local talent here in Arizona. On the youth level, but
Snoop's really about growing the game and growing the youth

(31:25):
in our community. So it does a lot behind the
scenes that people don't even know about, you know, just
to really make sure it's. One of the reasons he
chose our menu and our game is that we were
community minded first, and he really liked that and he
you knows a lot of it himself. So really sticking
with that theme and then throwing a really good football
game in the middle to see who we can get.

(31:47):
You know, I'm going h Frida head to Colorado Springstome
and to go watch Boise State and Air Force, who
are two of our potential teams. We'd love to have
Boise State actually play in one of our games. They
were supposed to and as I got canceled, but be
out there with them and potentially trying to woo them
to be one of our contestants in December on December

(32:08):
the twenty seventh, which you know that Boise State football
brand is is great and would be nice to have
them here associated with the bole.

Speaker 3 (32:15):
I'm not sure if you're the guy to answer this,
but asked the question anyway outside of audience, and you
can't talk about the audience because it is what it is.
And I'm gonna give you a magic Wand last year
you had forty thousand people, you know, to come to
the game, which was a record, I think it was.
If you had a magic wand what would be the
one thing that you wish could happen for the arisonable.

Speaker 13 (32:37):
Oh goodness, we've talked about this. What I wish is
that we had one person who came in and said,
this is a great thing and I'm going to buy
fifty thousand tickets and we're going to give them to
the community and just come.

Speaker 5 (32:51):
Just take care of it. We had that one, you know.

Speaker 13 (32:53):
Huge benefactor, and that is absolutely a magic wand wish
out in me in the ethos. But you know, it's
something I would love to do up a community to
just say, like, you've done well to support us, we'd
like to give back. So yeah, if you had ten people,
here's ten tickets.

Speaker 5 (33:08):
Come just come have.

Speaker 13 (33:09):
A great time, Come see all these great things we do.
And you know, and the best thing about us is
you both know, is that money's all going back to
our community. We just finished our season of giving where
we gave twenty five different five on one c threes
money this year, so to the tune of right around
a quarter million dollars. So that's that's what we do.

(33:31):
And when that money comes in, we're excited to give
it right back.

Speaker 2 (33:34):
Yeah. No, great job, great job.

Speaker 3 (33:36):
Okay, anything else, Eric, did you want to throw in
before we go?

Speaker 8 (33:41):
No?

Speaker 13 (33:41):
I always appreciate the time, So I was looking forward
to the next time.

Speaker 3 (33:44):
Okay, maybe you'll be in here in another or show
to talk talk Brian R.

Speaker 2 (33:48):
Locker and stuff.

Speaker 3 (33:49):
You can come in studio replace Blake for you know,
I need somebody to replace bait Lake all the time.

Speaker 5 (33:55):
Yeah, I'm gonna say it would be hard to do.

Speaker 2 (33:57):
All right, yus, thanks, Sy, I appreciate.

Speaker 5 (34:00):
It first say that.

Speaker 2 (34:01):
But about that favorite gross from the Arizona Bowl.

Speaker 4 (34:04):
Uh, they've done a great job since November twenty seven,
so two days after Christmas. As he said, you know,
the game has been around in different names, in different forms,
different sponsors, but it seems like it's on pretty solid
footing these days.

Speaker 2 (34:17):
Yeah. Yeah, and in twoson Arizona, you know.

Speaker 4 (34:19):
And he's also talking about, you know, the alignment of
all these different conferences. I mean, could we see a
PAC twelve whatever that's going to look like a team
like a I don't know, I don't.

Speaker 3 (34:28):
Even know who's in the Pac twelve Pack twelve. That
could be San Diego. You could have the whole school
in that thing. If all things can a Mountain West
Arizona play in it. Just you know that they go
six and six and there's not or seven and five.
You know what I'm saying, Get the interesting, get the
locals because they've played in the comparable before. They did
like the first one of the first ones. Yes, so
I mean, yeah, who knows.

Speaker 4 (34:49):
I mean, there's gonna be, like you said, things will
kind of wrap up this year and then we'll see
how how things line up next year.

Speaker 3 (34:55):
Right, Okay, let's take a break, Kobe and come back.

Did you work with Eric Crass the other guy? No,
he was a different station, but we were around the
same time. Yeah, yeah, you get similar experiences. He was four,
he was at four hours at nine.

Speaker 3 (39:31):
Child four with Uan Ryan generally, and then Pete Peter
Tell got him.

Speaker 2 (39:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (39:36):
Yeah, a lot of people came through Channel four. You
were you were the established guy at you never left
you ever left you like two step too much. We
had a couple of good road trips together.

Speaker 4 (39:46):
You know, sometimes those are the most fun times we
get to be with everybody when you're not like you know,
chase deadline chasing stories. But you know, we had a
couple of good experiences out on the road, Yeah, covering
the u of a softball, baseball, basketball, basketball.

Speaker 2 (40:01):
Yeah, the good old days.

Speaker 3 (40:02):
I'd like to say, when you had media traveling doing things. Yeah,
anybody want to call, here's your chance. Five two zero
four one, six seventy four forty. I think we have
about nine minutes or so, hm, Kobe, yep, all right,
so five two oh four one, six seventy four forty.
I'd like to hear from you, just maybe on the
football team. What's coming up with a basketball team? Anything

(40:26):
else baseball? If you want to bring that up, I'm
fine with that. We can do that as well. A
lot of breaking news? Did you mentioned a few things?
Did breaking news?

Speaker 4 (40:35):
I was I don't want to get I don't want
to get too Yeah, melancholy here because I was a
big fan of this movie. But you know, Robert Redford
passed away, and you know, The Natural came out in
nineteen eighty four, so it's been you know.

Speaker 3 (40:48):
A long time, forty years eighty nine, so he was
forty one forty eight, Yeah he was.

Speaker 4 (40:54):
You know, but remember that that was kind of the
role he played was this, you know, veteran guy that
just kind of shows up at a nowhere. What happened
to him? And he's hitting home runs? And does he
have some kind of supernatural power? So in terms of
baseball movies, I mean, it's got to be one of
the top ten of all time. I would say, who
would be some good ones, the League of their own,
Bull Durham, Major League, Major League of course, Tucson. But yeah,

(41:18):
the Redford movie and he you know, he was a
big movie star at that time. But when you when
you think about you know, all presidents men, and what
that meant to like me, my generation of getting into
journalism when that book came out and that movie came
out and he was one of the stars seventy what
it was, and then him and Dustin Hoffen playing that Yeah,
I mean that was a big, a big time.

Speaker 3 (41:38):
And I forgot he was in there, but yeah, I remember,
and he played Woodward. Yeah, no, that was a great
movie back and that kind of inspired me. But those
were those were those times were long gone, man, exactly
fifty years ago. In terms of journalism, I liked him.
There was one with Demi Moore and what he forgetting.

Speaker 2 (41:58):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, but.

Speaker 3 (42:00):
Nineteen and ninety ish around there, the millionaire guy.

Speaker 2 (42:03):
I mean Bill Bull dirm here.

Speaker 4 (42:05):
I just happened to look this up before I came in,
you know, Bull Durham. This is from USA today. Field
of Dreams. Oh yeah, good, one league of their own.
Oh you just you just yeah, you're just I'm just
looking at other baseball movies. But Naturals on that list
and phil A Dreams, Phila Dreams. Moneyball was kind of
one of the newer ones. It's twenty eleven. I don't

(42:27):
know why I didn't see that one. I just didn't
see it. Yeah, kind of the new age of baseball.
I know, there really haven't been too many. You know,
you have to go way back to like, you know what,
the Pride of the Yankees. That was a Lou Garrick story,
things like that. But yeah, I mean Redford did a
lot of interesting movies, but that was the only baseball
one I can think of that he did. He loved

(42:47):
He was kind of an outdoorsy guy, right living in
Utah and did a lot of outdoor movies.

Speaker 3 (42:52):
Yeah, and he was one of those advocates as well.
Yeah eighty nine, I am surprised to see that he
had he had passed this morning.

Speaker 4 (42:59):
Yeah, he hadn't done my publicly for like, I don't know,
the last five years or so. Yeah, but still, Yeah,
a lot of good ones. Bad news bears banged the
drums slowly, bad news bears. No, I'm lame, I'm naming
off baseball.

Speaker 2 (43:12):
But was he in? I thought that was Matho?

Speaker 3 (43:16):
Uh? Yeah, yeah, there was the one where was the
one with uh Snipes? Rusty Snipes was a crazy guy.
He was being chased by Denial. Was it DeNiro chasing
him with the phone calls and you know, stalker? He
was a stalker. Was it a Redford? No? No, Snipes
was in Major League? Yeah, but he was in another

(43:37):
one too.

Speaker 2 (43:38):
I think Willie did he play Willie Mays Hayes.

Speaker 3 (43:40):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, him and Charny Sheen and them. Yeah,
I remember that was like nineteen eighty nine here.

Speaker 2 (43:44):
Yeah, I don't know what else.

Speaker 3 (43:47):
I can't remember other ones, but I'm sure there have
been plenty of them.

Speaker 2 (43:52):
Wait before your time, Kobe. Yeah, Major League is a
great movie.

Speaker 11 (43:55):
Though.

Speaker 2 (43:55):
My dad showed me that one.

Speaker 4 (43:58):
About eight Man out to remember that one, White and
the Black Sox.

Speaker 2 (44:02):
Yeah, the gambling.

Speaker 4 (44:03):
Again, they don't make baseball movies anymore. I guess there's
just not enough drama.

Speaker 5 (44:09):
Drama.

Speaker 3 (44:10):
You can just go back to the stories the chicks
digged the long ball, that drama true in the very
bond stuff and all that.

Speaker 4 (44:17):
And maybe they'll be doing like a Maguire Sosa movie,
you know, not just a documentary, but something like that
around that story.

Speaker 3 (44:25):
Okay, that's yeah, yeah, sorry to see that this morning. Uh.
You know, good old boy, good looking guy who's just
kind of like an all American guy.

Speaker 4 (44:34):
So yeah, when you think about it too, I don't know,
I'm really drifting here, but like the Sting had a
lot of horse racing.

Speaker 2 (44:41):
I remember that, and then so he was.

Speaker 4 (44:42):
That was one of his first early big stars with
Paul Newman. Remember the whole horse that the whole horse
racing theme in that movie of them, you know, making
bats and knowing the results and then announcing them later
and stuff like that.

Speaker 2 (44:55):
So that was another Redford thing.

Speaker 3 (44:58):
Those are the good old days of of you know
us in seventies. Yeah, okay, anybody you want to call
five to two, four, one, six, seventy four, forty Uh baseball?
Did you see the games? Last night they were kind
of two kind of boring. It's been there's been like
two or three really good games and the rest have
been kind of like okay, Yeah, last night's weren't that great. Oh,
although Tampa Bay had the ending was good. Yeah, that

(45:20):
was okay.

Speaker 18 (45:21):
And then Chargers kind of a route kind of you
knew you knew he was going to win the first half.

Speaker 2 (45:26):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (45:27):
One of my friends here and you probably know him.
His daughter is a cheerleader for the Raiders. Really yeah, yeah,
she went to you then and she was on the
TV and she she was Honestly, they showed her like
before commercial and us with a bunch of guys, older guys,
and uh, hey, there's what's the excess names daughter? And
so they texted him and he says, this is like

(45:49):
ten minutes later, and he says.

Speaker 2 (45:51):
Could you get did you go back and get it
off the feed? You know they got the feed. He
wasn't even watching. He was at the game. He was there,
he was at the game.

Speaker 3 (45:58):
Yeah, so we couldn't we couldn't find it.

Speaker 4 (46:01):
I think there's a handful of former U of A
Palm girls that are in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (46:05):
They featured him over there at the game.

Speaker 3 (46:07):
Yeah, I think I saw a picture. Yeah it's good. Yeah,
not just the you know, football players, not just the guys.
And the guys are going on.

Speaker 2 (46:14):
To did you wouldn't might know this?

Speaker 3 (46:16):
Did the tight end from a couple three years ago?

Speaker 2 (46:20):
He was with the Bengals from Arizona.

Speaker 3 (46:23):
Yeah, he got cut. I wonder if he ended up
with the with the players with the practice squad, practice
squad somewhere. Yeah, mcletcham picture. No, God, my name, my
name's Kobe. We'll find him. You know what I'm talking about?
Oh Tanner, Yeah, macloth Yeah, is he does it? Say

(46:44):
where he's at now? Because he was really good and
he played maybe a year or two with the Bengals,
got cut and I was wondering if he.

Speaker 4 (46:52):
Got He says he's playing in Canada, but no, he's
a Canadian. I'm sorry, never mind, he's from Canada. Remember
he was from Yeah.

Speaker 2 (46:59):
Really good. Out of the only passed to him, no other,
no other TV tight.

Speaker 18 (47:05):
End drafted by the Bengals on your ninety fourth. He's
still with the Bengals that.

Speaker 2 (47:11):
He might be with on the practice squad.

Speaker 3 (47:13):
M because you let him go with the last he
is no longer on the active ross. Yeah, that's what
it is. Yeah, really good. I mean that tells you
how good you have to be to make that. I mean,
he was super at Arizona. He's one of those guys.

Speaker 4 (47:25):
It seems like there's a lot of those kind of
tight ends that's you know, that position has those types
of players. Yeah, big yeah, Bigan can stretch the field
a little bit.

Speaker 3 (47:34):
Right, right is J J. McCarthy. No no running back here,
JJJ Taylor, J J.

Speaker 5 (47:42):
Taylor.

Speaker 2 (47:42):
I wanted to.

Speaker 3 (47:43):
He was with the New England Patriots for a long time. Yeah,
I don't know if he's still on the roster. There's
so many, but it's been a while. I just saw
I just came across something on my feed with the shimmy.
The shimmy from Ronde Hollis Jefferson the shimmy.

Speaker 2 (47:58):
You knew that right away.

Speaker 3 (47:59):
And how he he signed his contract in twenty fifty fifteen, right,
he was like a I don't know if he was
the first round or second round guy. He made one
point three million dollars and he had he says up,
I had to get a couple of roommates in Brooklyn
because the rents.

Speaker 2 (48:12):
Were so high. Yeah, I didn't want to spend all
my money on just dreaded.

Speaker 3 (48:16):
J J.

Speaker 18 (48:16):
Tayler is still in the active roster the Houston Texans.

Speaker 2 (48:20):
Okay, well for a nice little career for him.

Speaker 3 (48:23):
And you know, all the question he always answered here
was or had to ask or had to answer here,
you're so small? How do you? How do you survive?
But he's doing well, really well apparently well the.

Speaker 4 (48:34):
Kid that's you know, had the big game the other night,
Madi is not very taught. In fact, tho they have
the same number, twenty then you have twenty one from here.

Speaker 2 (48:40):
They kind of reminded me of each other. You have
fantastic game. Yeah, that was quite a breakthrough.

Speaker 3 (48:45):
You talked about this when we first started the show
today about the defense being probably the number one thing storyline.
I think the running back situation too, is maybe two,
because they've done really really well.

Speaker 4 (48:58):
Yeah, I mean, and a lot of depth, a lot
of different people running in and out of the field,
and they're all pretty new basically, and.

Speaker 3 (49:05):
If one goes down, which one Hasso And then they
had the other kid, Craig, I think it was who
has been heard of? No, you got this kid? Who's
done really well or did really well.

Speaker 2 (49:16):
It's you know, it really is.

Speaker 4 (49:17):
I mean, you know, as I mentioned earlier, you know,
five NFL starting quarterbacks are injured and it's just a sport.
You have to you know, somehow stay healthy and if
you do go down, have somebody else, you know, pick
it up.

Speaker 2 (49:28):
Right.

Speaker 4 (49:28):
I was always kind of Dick Tomy's thing, you know,
just next guy in and uh yeah.

Speaker 2 (49:33):
Fortunately for Brett Brendany, he's got a lot of depth
at this.

Speaker 3 (49:35):
Time, right right, luckily because last year was what he
didn't have with that position, because he had to go
through the air and ground with with the and had
they had him, there may have been a chance to
do really well.

Speaker 4 (49:49):
And there Harry is not playing in the NFL. Yeah,
quite the story. He was that good. He was in
New Mexico too before he transferred here, so Arizona claims him.
But but he played with one game? Did even play
one game that first game against New Mexico?

Speaker 3 (50:03):
Yeah? Yeah, okay, how much that we have a minute? Okay, great,
as we fade here in the first hour, we're gonna
come back with some breaking news from Kobe, right, you
have some and then we're gonna get a little of
missed Julia McDermott from the first t talk about what's

Speaker 2 (50:18):
Going on in her world and UH and golf,
