Speaker 3 (01:07):
We're gonna throw it back a little bit, not so
breaking news, but just talk about the Tucson so Worrows.
They won the championship. Game on Monday, eleven to seven. Yeah,
they were down for most of the game and then
think of the fifth. Someone texted me to say they
were down and blah blah blah. Yeah, I think it
was in the the eighth where they score. It was

(01:28):
they were up eight to seven. I believe scored three
or four more. Yeah, and put it away. You got
him three outs in the ninth.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
You're out. You're out of town. I was out of town. Yeah,
good answer. Yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:42):
One of my players, that Jake le Olios, who's with
he plays for this fan of Bananas now starting the
Pakos League. He'd converted he was a catcher. I sent
him to He was a catcher in college and then
I converted him to a pitcher and then he played
in the Pacos League for a couple of years.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
So it's a jump off point.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Yeah, I mean, if you still have that dream, it'll
make a whole lot we're talking about.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
You just have to like, you have to love Yes,
the game. Yes, So that Bananas, I mean there's fantastic.
I saw them the last couple of weekends. Yeah, they're
like the globe shotters, but they must have to practice
what they do when they're not playing baseball.

Speaker 4 (02:17):
Catch you behind the back and between the legs.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (02:19):
Yet, yeah, we were.

Speaker 6 (02:22):
I'm like, I'm sorry, I want to talk more about it,
but it's I'm still like, no, no, we were so
close to bringing them here, oh for a game, multiple
times for a game, and now you have to have
I did bring this up with you, of a and
I think they're open to it as having them play
in the football stadium because they have to you have
to have thirty five thousand seats at least.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
How you well, you saw what they did with that. No,
they they play in the NFL stadium. Yeah, right, ridiculous.
Good for them. Wow, go ahead, We'll see.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
Arizona Athletics release the new mckel Center court with the
new cactus logo on it. Uh, you got to see
it for the first time. Fans were able to choose.
Were the ones who chose this design? And what do
you guys think it? Pops, I'll say that.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
I agree with the kid here, but to me, to me,
come on, you're just trying to sell me Mercedes.

Speaker 4 (03:17):
Just win games.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Yeah, you're like, just put the teach baskets back, just
just win games and start shooting from the free throw
line with underhand shots.

Speaker 4 (03:24):
Again, that was a game you love everybody.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Everybody was so involved in that voting and the way
it's gonna look. And Okay, David stottamar is not walking
through that locker room right now. It's Sean Ellie's not
coming through that locker room. But whatever turns you on,
I mean, if that's what turns you on, you know what,
that's a different discussion for They were so out of

(03:49):
it about that cactus and the thing. And really there's
the people who are are you a uniform guy? Because
we had this discussion with JA all the time. Just
you you baseball player. I don't care if you were
stirrups longest, just win the damn game. Come dirty, come dirty,
I don't care.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
I hate to say you and I are so much
alike there.

Speaker 6 (04:09):
I always had My partner was always the unform guy
because I was like, I don't care what they wear.
The uniform guy usually the guy now go bleed on
the field. Yes go If you come home clean, then
you're off the team. I don't want you anyone exactly.
You said, look good, play good, shut up.

Speaker 4 (04:25):
Just play good.

Speaker 6 (04:26):
Oh the anyway, the amount of money people spend on swag.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
Now in sports, you're like, dude, the.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Guy who buys and carried his bat. He doesn't he
doesn't have a hit.

Speaker 7 (04:38):
In one.

Speaker 4 (04:40):
Yeah, you're right, you're absolutely right. All right.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
I will say one thing I did notice on the
baseline has the old retro Arizona instead of like the
new era where I.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Did like that the retro Arizona. I think that's it.
It looks fantastic.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
It looks fantastic, and this is one of the ways
to get that engagement that we've been talking about.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Yeah, come see the new court. Yeah you voted on it,
so see the new helmet. Comes see the new uniform.
I came in and saw the team. I saw the
helmets and saw the team. We ain't coming back. You
saw it, you saw it, you saw it. And what's older?

Speaker 6 (05:18):
Yeah, I mean, I mean, once you saw it, it's
I mean, I guess, yeah, I don't know. I will
say this on a different note that you guys aren't
going to care about our listeners probably don't give a
rats ass either, But uh, Tough Luck Club, which is
a bar downtown Banksy. Do you guys know who banks
He is famous street most famous street artist of all time.
Nobody's seen his face. Nobody really knows who he is.

(05:39):
Did a drew in the bathroom?

Speaker 4 (05:41):
Down there? There's a bank? See now, Tough Love Club?

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Where's this?

Speaker 8 (05:45):
Sad?

Speaker 2 (05:45):
I've never c It's downstairs at Riley's. You've never been
in a Tough Luck club? I ever heard of Riley's the.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
Pizza place downtown. Who am I talking to right now?
If you guys live in Tucson.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
This is another thing I don't know. We don't know side.
Oh man, It's like, how do I know about this round?
These Maybe they shouldn't get the word out and they've
been there for twenty two years. I thought it was
in the established atis. You should be like three of them?
Did need advertising?

Speaker 7 (06:10):
So?

Speaker 6 (06:10):
Well know so that you don't have enough room now
for your sponsors. Yeah, okay, I knew this conversation is
gonna follow, right, You're right, but yeah, I mean Riley's
Tough Luck Club used to be the crematorium downairs that
I remember. They still have the metal slabs where all
the bodies were on. Yeah, yeah, okay that I know.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
They don't. I'm joking they don't. Still in Minnesote, those
aren't the tables that I know what you're talking about
because of the Yeah. Sorry, okay, No, I don't believe
you guys don't know. You didn't know Riley's. I know
you weren't going to know Banksy for any of that.

Speaker 4 (06:44):
Yeah, for what.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
I've been in school for the last Yeah, where did
you he just turned of eight?

Speaker 4 (06:50):
Side? Oh you didn't go to the UVA campus downtown
for four years?

Speaker 2 (06:53):
I did, so four years you spend you Sorry, you
didn't get my university which is three blocks away from downtown.

Speaker 4 (07:02):
Wait, wait, you don't get you know what I call him?

Speaker 7 (07:04):
Right?

Speaker 4 (07:05):
You know what that means?

Speaker 6 (07:06):
I know I know you were you were you were
literally a two minute tram ride.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
This is miss two shoes. He's not going to go
over there for a drink.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
I'm not saying it's not even if I if I
wasn't in classes, which I was, because you didn't miss class.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
I was at my job.

Speaker 6 (07:25):
I might have spent some mornings in Denver going to college,
not going to college, and what our new restaurants or
slash bars.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
That's what I would never call you. I knew which
bars opened today? My days off?

Speaker 4 (07:41):
All right, keep going, Sorry, Arizona soccer.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
They start their season tomorrow seven o'clock against UNLV. Okay,
they played, they played an exhibition game August fifth, they
won one nothing against at any of you.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
Yeah, we'll start her fifth season. I think it is.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
It's already been the five season, kind of like kind
of these new groups of Fivesuh, Tommy chip a suptball, Yeah,
same time, I think.

Speaker 4 (08:11):
A year right after. I think Andrea stayed one more year.
Well I thought it was five right behind. Yeah, okay,
so it's that era. The area you're talking about.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
Volleyball has their Red Blue scrimmage and we'll talk to
coach Doua right now.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
August sixteenth, Saturday, two o'clock, right before. Yeah, that's exciting. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
The Diamondbacks beat the Rangers today three to two or
was that yesterday?

Speaker 4 (08:33):
Yesterday? Three too?

Speaker 3 (08:35):
They just they finished right before the show started, one
six to four. They came back, Yeah, came back and
they took the series against the Rangers.

Speaker 2 (08:44):
So you're a baseball fan, you're Major League Baseball fan
or justumpure?

Speaker 4 (08:48):
No, I'm an MLB fan. You paid test.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Stay, I played fantasy baseball. Sorry sorry here, Yeah, your
life must be we're going to have a conversation or
did we just want to talk about No, no, don't well,
I don't know you brought it up or can't care
anything else about the Cubs or just the Cubs. Yeah, No,
I like baseball in general. I'm like following everybody.

Speaker 6 (09:08):
I mean, the Diamondbacks get rid of their main guys,
you know, Merrill Kelly and then their corners, Yes, whereas
and Naylor go to Seattle help them turn it around.
I think they're half a game out of first and
now all their young guys are getting a chance to play.
I was talking to Bob Hoffman because Bob Hoffin's a
huge Cleveland Guardians, He's from Cleveland, huge Cleveland Guardians fans.
Same thing, shipped off a bunch of their talent and

(09:30):
then brought their young guys up like that. To me
from a baseball standpoint is what's exciting is that. Okay,
if I'm in last place and I'm a I'm a
seller at the trade deadline, I get to now see
my next five or seven top prospects come up and play.
I don't I'm still engaged because of that, Like I
want to see what our future looks like. Like I
know you guys aren't huge baseball guys. But Detroit five
years ago, very similar four years ago. Right now, you're

(09:53):
seeing them reap the benefits of creating that culture from within.

Speaker 4 (09:56):
That's exciting.

Speaker 6 (09:56):
Cubs fan, same thing, right, we trade and get PCA
and that's peak cro I'm strong.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
You know Brett Strong, right, don't you?

Speaker 2 (10:02):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (10:02):
I know, gotta get him on.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
You gotta find me texting, Yeah, next week, tell me one. Yeah,
when you're back, You're you're my ROMI would love.

Speaker 4 (10:12):
To come on now.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
You will have to use the bleep button for Strong.
That's fine. We kind of go there without going there.

Speaker 6 (10:18):
We'll get him instead of on the same time and
just step away and watch them just yet at each other.

Speaker 4 (10:22):
It's the greatest thing. Actually.

Speaker 3 (10:25):
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that he has dealt
with stage four melanoma and then an experimental trial drug
saved his life.

Speaker 6 (10:34):
I'm gonna use air quotes because experimental when you're a
billionaire is probably better experimental drugs than what we're gonna get.
But that's good. How old is Jerry Jones?

Speaker 4 (10:43):
Seventy something? Seventy eight ish? I thought I was gonna
say ninety nine. I mean, ay two twdy two, Yeah,
going strong.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
Yeah, and then a lot of people don't want him
to go strong because they want him to sell the
team or give it to.

Speaker 4 (10:57):
His brother son.

Speaker 7 (10:58):
Yeah, I don't.

Speaker 6 (10:58):
I mean, I think that's just the Dallas way of
playing at this point, right, I mean, you have it's
another coaching decision that we could have a longer conversation about,
or we're gonna say one.

Speaker 3 (11:10):
Bill's running back James Cook and the Bills have reached
an agreement on a four year, forty million dollar contract
extension that includes thirty million guaranteed.

Speaker 6 (11:19):
Yeah, because they wanted him to play last week, gred
in the preseason game and he said no.

Speaker 4 (11:22):
Yeah, he's been helding out at practice too. Yeah.

Speaker 6 (11:25):
I mean, your life expectancy as a running back for
a career expectancy is at maybe most four to five years, right,
get paid.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
Cleveland Brown's quarterback Shouder Sanders injured in a bleak throwing
Wednesday morning. He will is more than likely not going
to play in their Saturday preseason game against the Eagles.
The Falcons quarterback Michael Pennix Junior was involved in a
practice fight versus the Titans on Wednesday. We've been seeing
a little a little bit of those, a little bit
of tension question.

Speaker 4 (11:55):
Yeah, quite a few, I think.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
I think that's more than anything, just getting amped up
for the season for about two weeks away, three weeks away. Yeah,
Kansas got an unprecedented thirty three hundred million gift dollar
gift from donor David Booth, believed to be the largest
single largest single gifts in the history of college athletics

(12:17):
at the largest at the school.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
And this is why the University of Arizona and other
schools like it will never be able to compete. You
have an alumni from u of A that are there
in exchel they're not giving to the UVA. Why that's
the thing. The guy, the guy we need to ask
and are you ask it kind of all the time
is Dave Silver who went out to chase the stuff.

Speaker 4 (12:37):
Yeah, very well, they're not.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
They're not.

Speaker 4 (12:40):
They're not.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
And maybe it's because maybe the UVA wasn't the place
they think kindly of. I don't I don't know. I'm
just throwing stuff out there.

Speaker 4 (12:49):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
You have alumni, you're sure you do, but they ain't giving.
You can get Courtney Kardashian. You get Stubor from Netflix.
Christen wigg you got New Yorker, New York Jets owner.
Yeah moreno Artie, which you that's a bridge that they
need to rebuild from one brick to the next.

Speaker 4 (13:06):
They have them, but they're not there.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
Yeah, but that's when Dave's on next. You should have
that conversation with him. He doesn't know either. I mean,
he was chasing stuff money for not that far. He
was in their broadcast, right, wasn't Dave in their broadcast
department for that?

Speaker 4 (13:21):
No? No, no, no, he was.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
He was getting he was for the alums, lums, and
then he went to the to certain schools.

Speaker 4 (13:27):
He went to a school too. He was getting money
for them. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
No, it's well, look, look, the Arizona basketball has has raised,
has not raised earned more than a billion dollars, yes,
six most six and all of college sports college, I guess,
and and I'm sure the minimum hasn't been reached. I mean,
you have Richard Jefferson who did the gym here, and
Steve Curzen a lot, the Davis family, but but they're

(13:52):
not giving student the players don't give three hundred, no,
three hundred. I mean you got Tito built the the indoor.

Speaker 4 (14:00):
Just some do three.

Speaker 6 (14:01):
Hundred and thirty million dollars three hundred and thirty that
he gave the university.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
Three hundred million, three d and thirty has I think
he already has building after three hundred million dollars. He
already has given before he's at Yeah. The big change,
last thing I got.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
Big twelve will be releasing player of availability reports for
football and men's and women's basketball before all conference games.
They announced it today. They will be designated as available, probable, questionable, doubtful,
or out.

Speaker 1 (14:36):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (14:36):
And those reports start three days before each conference game.

Speaker 4 (14:39):
Wow. Wow uh coaches hate.

Speaker 3 (14:44):
On the night before the conference game, they will be
listing players that's either available, game time decision or out
in in basketball.

Speaker 4 (14:52):
Okay, so game time decisions and.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
Final reports are due ninety minutes before the start of
each game.

Speaker 7 (14:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
Why wouldn't you call it a game time decision? I
don't want to give you an advanta sure. Yeah, that's ridiculous,
right anyway, Yeah exactly. I mean, so we didn't breaking news.
Little League World Series starts today?

Speaker 5 (15:08):
Right?

Speaker 4 (15:08):
Oh yeah right yeah, yeah, it's pretty big breaking news.

a little bit. Good to see you yesterday. We were
talking a lot about yesterday's kind of celebration, kind of
introduction to the season. Great to have these things. How
do you guys benefit from it?

Speaker 7 (20:21):
You know? Anytime we get to talk in front of
the community and let them know how important they are
and how much we value them and you know, in
a lot of situations how much we just need their
support in terms of showing up. You know, it's great.
You know, they want to see us in a non
threatening environment, and we want to talk in a non
threatening environment. Right, So it's just a lot of fun.

Speaker 2 (20:42):
Yeah, And it was while I'm here talked about just
what all he had said initially. The group of coaches
there are fantastic. I've been here a long long time
since eighty seven and the nineties. You know, you had Kindall,
you had Tommy, you had lud, you had Kendrea, had
Coach Bush, and we all know how strong those teams were.

(21:04):
That he was talking about how these groups of coaches
like you have the potential of becoming those that other group.

Speaker 7 (21:13):
Yeah, and exactly what we want to happen. You know,
we're a good group of coaches in terms of you know,
we have a group chet text that we have going on,
and we'll get to the feed off one another. We're
always encouraging one another to come into practices and just
kind of give their insight, their feedback, and it's a
community which is nice.

Speaker 6 (21:32):
We were talking about it, and I'll jump in really
quick because I don't know how to formulate this question
to you, but I'm really interested in your feedback on it, coach,
But that all you guys do such a good job
of recruiting character and high character.

Speaker 4 (21:45):
Young young men and young women. How do you.

Speaker 6 (21:48):
Balance character in skill level and know that they'll fit
a program like the U of A at the level
it plays at.

Speaker 7 (21:57):
You know, it's one of those things where I tell myself,
I can only have one kid every four years. That
may be a gamble, And so you look at where
they are athletically because at the end of the day,
they got to fit that bill. And then you start
asking all the questions, you know, ask the athletes, how
would your teammates de describe you? You know, parents, what

(22:18):
do they look like when they struggle? What is a
struggle like? You ask the athlete, you know, how would
you want your teammates to describe you? And it sets
the stage in their mind that these are the things
that's important to us. But then I emphasize to our
players all the time that you know, we're the program
that we want. The administrators and support staff saying, hey,

(22:40):
I want to have volleyball. I want that to be
my sport. Because they're taking care of business. But at
the end of the day, it's all about how we
as a staff carry ourselves. And so when they are
we walking around with them and they see us talking
to various people that are like, well.

Speaker 2 (22:55):
Who is that?

Speaker 7 (22:55):
You know? Like today JB walked into practice, Joseph Blair.
He was up top and waving at him, and everyone
was like, who is that? And then there was a
wait a minute, is that just a blak? And I'm
like yeah, and it was like oh wow. You know,
so they know that this is an environment where we're
going to take care of one another. I'm going to
support one another, and we need to be good role
models out there.

Speaker 2 (23:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (23:15):
Yeah, no, good question.

Speaker 2 (23:16):
Good question because we talked about this earlier with coaching,
and I've covered some big time coaches and pros and
here coaches have some of the bigger egos and we
can fix them.

Speaker 4 (23:28):
We can fix these players. We can.

Speaker 2 (23:29):
I'll take them on and take the chance, or take
her on and take the chance, because I you know,
I know how to do this, and sometimes most of
the times it doesn't work.

Speaker 7 (23:37):
Yeah, you know that day and age of taking the
hard nuts, a whole bunch of them. It's just few
and far in between. Unfortunately with the transfer portal, and
you know, you know, it's one of those things you've
got to kind of guard yourself because you can bend
over backwards for a kid, and you know, in four
months they walk away and it's like, whoa, you know,
I did all these different things, and so you know,

(23:59):
being on and transparent with them right off the bat
is what we need to do.

Speaker 6 (24:03):
Right And then the timing of your seasons pretty early.
So how how long do you get with the team,
a full team to create a bonding atmosphere and understanding
maybe potential roles and who's a leader in the clubhouse
and how things are going to play out. How do
you establish that in the short timeframe with what you
have currently?

Speaker 7 (24:23):
Well, you know, this year we actually got to start earlier.
Nancy double A granted us a waiver to start July
thirty first, when initially we weren't supposed to start until
August eighth, and so, but it's something that we work
on on a daily basis. So when we're talking to recruits,
you know, I'm looking for athletes that are going to
come in and be able to talk and.

Speaker 4 (24:42):
Be able to relate.

Speaker 7 (24:43):
You know, Avery Scoggins. I used her as an example
with a lot of our kids, you know, when we're
still recruiting her. After she committed, she would call and
talk to Steven and or I at least four times
a week. What's going on, coach? I saw this, I
saw this in a game. What do you think? How
are you feeling about this? Because she's the type of
kid that wants to be invested in what's going on.

(25:05):
She wants to know how our brains work so that
her brain can be better served, and she's able to
articulate that information to the team. And so as a
coach you have to be willing to share things with
hers just because that's how she gets going. And then
you know, you find that one kid and see who
she hangs out with, and then you talk to that

(25:25):
kid a little bit more. You engage that kid more.
Because as for the women, I think it's difficult for
them to be that person by themselves. They have to
have a support around them so that when they're off
that game, their game, the next person can step in
and help them out. Along the way and then when
you're in practice. I do it all the time, so

(25:46):
it's kind of funny. I had a player today and
you know, she's a tough serve came to her. She
passed it up. It was perfect. And I went up
to her and I said, now tell her that was
an easy serve.

Speaker 2 (25:56):
She's like, no, I can't do that.

Speaker 7 (25:58):
I can't do that. I was like, no, tell it
to the easy served. And so she was like a
hands She turned red and everything. It was actually kind
of funny. So I stood behind her and I said,
this is what she would say type thing. So you know,
you empower them and then you create that dynamic of
what you wanted to look like because for some of
them is not natural, but they can learn.

Speaker 4 (26:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (26:18):
Yeah, I don't know if you know this, coach, because
you've been on the show a few times. I don't
believe in the word momentum, but I do believe in
the word runs and confidence, and what you did last
year to set up this year was in my mind,
not so much wannim, but but confidence into coming into
this year.

Speaker 4 (26:36):
Would you agree.

Speaker 7 (26:38):
At you know, being able to play at home in
a tournament. You know, we were disappointed we didn't get
invited to the you know, the Big Dance. We ended
up finishing the being the sixty fifth best team in
the nation, which is awesome. But the advantages and the
things that came from that being able to play in
front of a group of people that really hadn't feenished yet.

(26:59):
But we made a call out to the community, and
community showed up and you know that come watch us,
and they go, oh, my gosh, this is a fun sport.
You know. We're adding floor seats this year because the
turnout was so good for the nib SEA and I
think a lot of it is because there were several
basketball people there, fans, and they're used to wanting to
be on the floor. So when those seats showed out,

(27:21):
you know, for the NIBC, they're like, wait, whoa, whoa,
those are premium seats. So when we opened it up
this year, they're like, oh, I better get these tickets
now because they won't be available later. And so that
momentum and the players understood and they felt it and
appreciated it, and it's what we're using to go forward. Also,
the hurt and disappointment of not getting what we initially wanted.

Speaker 6 (27:45):
What's one thing coach that from the time when you
were playing to the time you're coaching, that you think
is better and one thing that's quite a bit more
difficult about. I think, whether it can be recruiting or
playing or coaching, whatever it may be, I think the better.

Speaker 7 (28:00):
Part is these kids. I tell these our players all
the time. They are so smart, they're so trained because
they're used to playing, and they're used to getting answers,
and people get lessons like nobody's business now. I think
when I played, nobody was good in lessons. You know,
you just had to go out there and kind of
grind it out. And so they're coming in at a

(28:21):
higher level. They're jumping higher, they're more physical, which I
think is all good. The thing that is not good
that I don't like is a transfer portal. I think
that you know, there is disappointments.

Speaker 5 (28:33):
Along the way.

Speaker 7 (28:34):
Not everyone can be the alpha dog. You know, sometimes
you may have to sit back and wait a minute,
whereas the athletes aren't as inclined to wait because it's
like I deserve something because I put in, you know,
all these number of hours with special training, or because
you told me I was good good at me as
I play right, and that's not necessarily true. You may

(28:56):
still have to wait your time, and so I don't
like the fact. I mean, I believe athletes, you're not
happy to go, but I think you have to should
wait a year. I think you should be sit there
and kind of figure it out. Because back when I
was athletes, I couldn't get on the phone right away, no,
because you had an answer machine. You couldn't get your mom
or dad or whatever, you know, and you had to

(29:16):
think about it. And in a lot of situations you
didn't have a cell phone, so I got to go
to a pay phone and do it or wait till
I get back home, and by then things have simmered
down and things are better. So I don't like how
accessible transferring is for them.

Speaker 6 (29:31):
Now do you feel like and we we Steve and
I had this conversation, but I don't think we've actually
asked any of the coaches, and coach would be a
perfect person to ask. Do you feel like you you
have to re recruit the same player constantly throughout the
year because of the transit I do.

Speaker 7 (29:47):
I recruit my players every single day I am, which
is why I'm always in a constant communication with them,
this was good, and you know we need to work
on this, and how are things going and what are
you thinking. So every time we have a meeting, I'm recruiting.
I tell them I'm recruiting them. I'm recruiting, recruiting the
next class coming in. I'm recruiting the kids that's already committed.

(30:09):
So you're always doing it. But as a result, that
means I'm prepared. I don't like surprises, honestly, so I'm
going to try to always be in front of it.

Speaker 4 (30:20):
No, that's a that's a great point.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
It's funny when they use this example because it probably
doesn't apply to you because you've been here a long time.
But coach Bennan said that, and by in pardon my
my French, he said when he got here he had
to kiss a lot of ass when he because he
didn't know they're going to jump in. You guys have
it tough because you don't know day to day, or
month to month, or four months to four months whether

(30:44):
you're going to have a little miss Johnny jumping.

Speaker 4 (30:47):
For you or not.

Speaker 7 (30:49):
Right right, And so I have weekly meetings with my players.
The players are divided up amongst my coaching staff. They're
taking talking to them individually. They'll go have coffee, you know,
go out to lunch or whatever the case may be,
that give the information back to me. Then you know,
they'll kind of talk about, well, this kid is still
in this kind of way. So I get to that

(31:10):
kid and then I asked a tough question, are you
trying to leave? You know, because if you are, I
need to be prepared, because you know what I don't
do is I don't promise any player that's coming into
the program that they'll start. I just I don't do it.
I know some people do it, and I just think
it's wrong because if you're already in my program as
a junior, you're going to constantly be saying, well, she

(31:31):
told me this, so I know she's telling the next person.
And then you're not playing with a sense of confidence.
And so I tell them I just don't want to
be surprised. If this is what you want to do,
let me know and we'll be prepared. And then I
hold them to the fire for it. It's like, okay,
this is what you said. And I tell them that
my word is all I got, your word is all

(31:54):
you got. To, So I'm going to choose to believe
you if you say this right.

Speaker 3 (31:58):
Coach can talk about the red blue screaming's happening Saturday,
what's it going to look like, or maybe who are
some of the players that fans are going to be
able to see come Saturday.

Speaker 7 (32:07):
So the game is at two o'clock and we are
going to have a I haven't decided which color is
going to be for which group, but it would be
our projected starters at this point. For the first two sets,
we're going to play four regardless of how things go.
The fourth will be to fifteen, and then in the
third and fourth set, I'll kind of interchange the players

(32:29):
that get a different look. But it's going to be exciting.
You know. Our goal is to make our sport the
sport that people want to watch. Volleyball is a social sport,
you know, it's like and people want to know what
the rules are. You know, they never know why one
girl has on a different jerseys. They never know how
someone goes in and out and doubles and things like that.

(32:51):
So we want to take the time to kind of
explain to the fans that will be new coming in
this year.

Speaker 4 (32:57):
It's funny.

Speaker 2 (32:58):
We talked about this. We talked we can solve all
the world's problems here in the show. So just be
aware of you, you know, football, and it's getting people
to go to football games. If you've never been to
a football game, just try to get them there for
whatever reason, make.

Speaker 4 (33:11):
The tickets cheaper or whatever for you.

Speaker 2 (33:13):
And you run last year at the end, I'm sure,
I'm sure you you developed or grabbed some new fans
that hadn't been there, but you were winning, so hey,
they were curious one.

Speaker 7 (33:25):
And we're at an eight hundred and eleventh season season
tickets sold thus far, we're ahead of where we were
last year. I think our number last year was seven
fifty or something of that nature. So we're getting the
tickets sold. But and that's great that we, you know,
have that number, but I know we could do better
because I see what goes to basketball men and women.

(33:46):
I see how many go to baseball and softball, and
you know, it's just one of those things where you
want to come in and be engaging. But beyond all
of it, I really want the people to come. If
you never buy a season ticket and you come to
you know, home matches, I'm just as happy as if
we sold the season tickets because, as we're talking as
day and age, those are the things that the athletes

(34:06):
are looking at, you know, so you kind of put
it on them. So we will go out in the
community every chance we get to put our base in
front of the hands, right right.

Speaker 2 (34:15):
Well, coach, we loved having you on the show. Good
to see you yesterday. Good luck, have some runs here
in the front.

Speaker 7 (34:21):
Yes, we're on it.

Speaker 4 (34:22):
Okay, thanks coach, appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (38:22):
Well, I was called out was yesterday? Well let's ask you.
I don't think I don't think you guys even talked
to me yesterday. The thing, well, you were a busy guy.

Speaker 4 (38:30):
You slipped me up.

Speaker 2 (38:31):
Pop got there? Yeah, well yeah, Steve had a case
of the runs when I was there. That's why did
you guys? Realize this is a public form and they'll
believe what you say.

Speaker 4 (38:40):
That didn't happen.

Speaker 2 (38:42):
You say that because it's directed to you. You didn't
want to stake the No, but I did spill spill
some food last night?

Speaker 4 (38:50):
Yeah, did you? It was like.

Speaker 3 (38:53):
I tried getting a napkin or looking for a napkin
and I dropped the Tacoh. Yeah, what were you gonna say?

Speaker 9 (38:59):
What?

Speaker 7 (39:00):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (39:00):
The question? What was the question?

Speaker 3 (39:02):
We were trying to find a comparison for Arizona basketball,
but the equivalent of that to a program in college football?

Speaker 8 (39:12):
Mmm?

Speaker 4 (39:13):
And I said Boise State and I was called out
for that. I don't think it's Boise State. Okay, think
it's a man.

Speaker 6 (39:22):
USC The height every single the height every single year
for USC.

Speaker 4 (39:29):
Now, I will say you a basketball is kind.

Speaker 2 (39:31):
Of that's got I think that's and and then disappointment
at the end of the year. No, No, that's kind
of right.

Speaker 4 (39:36):
Guess with it.

Speaker 2 (39:36):
I'll give you We'll give you a couple more go
ahead and the obvious ones. Uh, Penn State.

Speaker 3 (39:41):
Yeah, yeah, we asked the chat GBT they said Penn
State and State.

Speaker 2 (39:45):
I said Florida. Off the top of my head. I
just said Florida.

Speaker 4 (39:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (39:49):
And then our guest yesterday who covers college football and said,
maybe L s U, but any L s U.

Speaker 3 (39:56):
Yeah, I think it's recency bias of the championships.

Speaker 4 (40:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (40:00):
Yeah, Yeah, that's a tough that's actually a pretty tough
tough question. I've never put it in my I never
even thought about it that way.

Speaker 7 (40:08):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (40:09):
Someone I asked, uh, they said a organ.

Speaker 7 (40:13):
No.

Speaker 2 (40:14):
I mean maybe maybe because they're so close to us
here that we know, and that's maybe that the US
is the same way.

Speaker 4 (40:20):
That's why I went with him.

Speaker 2 (40:21):
But I yeah, but yeah, I think us he's a
good good one too, because they're crappy in basketball and football.

Speaker 4 (40:28):
They show up every now and again.

Speaker 6 (40:30):
Yeah, it's a that's a hard one. But I listen,
I'm not This isn't a knock on you a basketball
We're just we're just having a general concept over the
last thirty five forty years.

Speaker 9 (40:39):
Right.

Speaker 6 (40:40):
This is not a direct reflection on Tommy Lloyd, because
he is I think, for my money, the my I'm
gonna say something, You're gonna kill me for it. Uh,
I think it. When it's all said and done, I'm
going to be a bigger fan of Tommy Lloyd than
I was of Loudholes.

Speaker 4 (40:55):
WHOA, that's a hot take. If he says that you
have a same I think, I think, what what is
he say? What will you have to do to do that?

Speaker 6 (41:06):
Or Yeah, continue on the same trajectory.

Speaker 4 (41:10):
The trajectory is four sweet sixteenth. Yeah.

Speaker 6 (41:13):
I mean you run into a Houston team you had
no business playing in one, and you run into Duke,
which is arguably what about the other two?

Speaker 4 (41:21):
Then you should have won. But it's fine. That's college basketball.

Speaker 2 (41:25):
I'm not saying from a winning and I'm talking the
players he recruits, the character he is as a person,
that's a big step. I mean, that's a big ask,
scru I'm just saying on the current trajectory. And I
know this, this is sounds like blasphemy at this point,
probably because the legend. No.

Speaker 6 (41:42):
I think at the end of the day, I'm going
to like Tommy Lloyd more than I like Ludelson. And
that's that's a wild take. I get it, I understand it.

Speaker 2 (41:51):
Yeah, coming from a guy who kind of knows both sides.

Speaker 4 (41:53):
Of it, you know you grew up Diehard ludels Right.

Speaker 2 (41:57):
Have you read that booet? I have you gave me
a case of the runs? Phenomenal. You did a great job.
I always read your stuff, you know that. Yeah, so, no,
that's crazy. Last time he was there. Obviously he's very
high on this team. Yeah, very high in this team,
which he should be. He should be very high on this.
He's gonna be able to go big if that doesn't

(42:18):
work lineup.

Speaker 4 (42:20):
He wants to with this team.

Speaker 6 (42:21):
And I think the people that we don't talk about
the most is what's his name? We talked about this one,
the good from Germany, the Russian Germany. Yeah, yeah, I
think that kid. I mean you watch some of his highlights.
He's playing with the NBA guys. Yeah, we'll see. The
thing is he doesn't go deep. Well, he's gonna be
weird and I don't know how that's gonna be. I
think that's gonna be a lesson learned for him moving forward.

(42:44):
Is how to do how to get to a ten
man maybe eleven man rotation in the big twelve.

Speaker 2 (42:49):
That's a that's a thing that you don't break because
you trust who you trusk. He's going to be eight
man rotating matter what moving forward? So you go with
what don't play on this team? I don't we don't
know yet. I don't know yet. I don't even know
some of the names yet. Are we the open practice yesterday?
I think it was.

Speaker 4 (43:05):
Dmitri right, the.

Speaker 2 (43:09):
Which Ivan, Ivan, Kartchenkov and there are a lot of
figured was a good way to three?

Speaker 4 (43:18):
Yeah, they're gonna be good. Here's the issue.

Speaker 2 (43:21):
And even in the top ten now before we start,
U B y U is in there, Texas Tech is
in there, Houston States right, those four and then there
was finished third or fourth.

Speaker 3 (43:33):
Yeah, you don't know what's gonna be from Kansas on
a year to year basis.

Speaker 4 (43:37):
It's a gauntlet, but it's a good gauntlet. Let's go.

Speaker 2 (43:39):
We gotta talk about his non conference schedule. That's fantastic.
I mean we're going to be going to Veggas. You
gotta call you're on the air.

Speaker 5 (43:47):
Yeah, I'm here, Hi, guys.

Speaker 2 (43:49):
Howard, Howard, don't go on to.

Speaker 7 (43:52):
I'm not going to go to Tangent.

Speaker 5 (43:53):
I actually heard that. That was funny. We can have
Howard call up and say nothing, no, but no, it's good.
You know what that's Blake calling the most right talking.
I'm totally into Blake. I agree with his takes. I'm
gonna say Tommy Lloyd also because he's not gonna get
lured away, and he's much younger, and he's his first

(44:16):
program and he's coming in guns of blazing like Luke.

Speaker 2 (44:23):
Take by Howard. Yeah, I'm gonna say I want to.

Speaker 5 (44:27):
And I'm gonna segue into basketball because Blake, you agree.

Speaker 4 (44:31):
You like the sons like me or too?

Speaker 5 (44:32):
Right?

Speaker 4 (44:33):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (44:35):
Okay, that said my brothers. He's really turned off by
most pro sports. And as much as my brother likes volleyball,
because you had a volleyball coach on and and but
she did something for showing the cross to me and
Steve because I'm gonna agree with Steve on we don't

(44:57):
believe in momentum on run.

Speaker 7 (45:00):
But she used plainly my ears hurt her talking about momentum.

Speaker 4 (45:04):
Yes, yes, we one and I looked at each other
when she said that.

Speaker 5 (45:08):
It was like what right after.

Speaker 4 (45:12):
Runs?

Speaker 5 (45:12):
And that's so I'm going. Oh, and that said about volleyball.
I despise volleyball just like my brother loves it. He
loves to coach young people. That's what his dream would
beat his owner would and teach young people. I despise
it with a passion because I'm older and it's like,
people want me to go pick a ball, but I

(45:34):
despise pickleball until you're over seventies, until you're actually old?

Speaker 2 (45:39):
Is this what I sound like? I gotta change my vibe.

Speaker 4 (45:43):
And I was like, oh wait, no, I'm in the studio.

Speaker 2 (45:46):
How are you going to set me straight? Here? Holy mo?

Speaker 6 (45:49):
Howard do you do you not even like any kind
of forms of volleyball? Like you don't like beats volleyball either?

Speaker 5 (45:54):
No, No, I like it, but I'm saying I don't
like to play it. No, I don't like to play
them anymore.

Speaker 4 (45:59):
When I was younger, yeah, that's.

Speaker 5 (46:01):
Fun when you're I was on a volleyball date that
couldn't beat that. But it's like, that's my kind of volleyball.
And if you're in my I used to have a
roommate I go to church gram a church type of
guy sometimes. But my my roommate of ten years older
than me, I called him going to the Church of
volleyball because he played volleyball on Sundays. When we were
moovemates for two and a half years.

Speaker 4 (46:23):
You promised me you wouldn't go gentle, and you did.

Speaker 2 (46:26):
Thanks Howard. No, that's about volleyball.

Speaker 5 (46:29):
Thank you, bye bye.

Speaker 4 (46:31):
Thanks for boy, Howard. I hope he does.

Speaker 2 (46:33):
I hope Howard's not a pilot because he is. But
he gave me pray so I like everyone's agreeing with
you today, Steve. I thought he didn't like like watching.
Yeah action you don't want to see either. Yeah, yes,

(46:54):
I sound like that. Holy pp I wanna be nicer
two people you do.

Speaker 4 (46:59):
My day comes out of your mouth a lot. You
look fighting addressed today. That's too funny. You know what
I'm talking about.

Speaker 6 (47:12):
Yeah, Eddie has I still cannot believe you guys. A
don't know Riley's and you don't know Banksy like, no,
even I don't.

Speaker 2 (47:24):
I'm old, I don't know. Yeah, I don't go down there.
For give me Scotch and water? You drink scotch? No,
I don't know what. What am I going to say?
A drink A coke? You BUYD would much prefer you
to say scotch and water.

Speaker 4 (47:38):
I would never have that scotch.

Speaker 2 (47:39):
One why water Scotch is supposed to be never mind,
that's a whole different. You could tell me anything. I
wouldn't understand what you're saying. You don't listen to me
in the first place. You and one that I'm the
ball with Steve Rivera. Yeah, that's true. You're right, You're right.

(48:00):
I should just stand out.

Speaker 3 (48:02):
You just say, like ten seconds ago, I told you
it wouldn't last long.

Speaker 4 (48:06):
That's too funny. I love.

Speaker 6 (48:08):
The first thing you say to Howard is don't go
on agent.

Speaker 2 (48:12):
Oh yeah, do not go on a tangent. And two
seconds into the conversation, it's just crossfire. Okay.

Speaker 6 (48:20):
Plans, I mean I only get to see you guys
once a week, So plans this weekend? What are you
guys doing?

Speaker 4 (48:25):
Football? Don't they have signing this weekend?

Speaker 3 (48:27):
Yes, they have a meet the Cats events I think
right after not right after, but after their morning practice
or I think from like three thirty to Saturday. Yeah,
and then they have an open practice the next Sunday.
That next day on the Sunday, Oh okay, I'll try
to find it.

Speaker 2 (48:43):
Yeah, okay, because it's if you're gonna have to meet
the team or whatever on three o'clock in the afternoon.
Year one hundred and six.

Speaker 4 (48:50):
You're not gonna meet a lot of the people.

Speaker 2 (48:52):
Another thing that we talked about, wouldn't you be would
wouldn't it be smarter to have it at night or morning?

Speaker 3 (49:00):
It's got to be something that's indoor. Yeah, or Stevens,
I doubt good.

Speaker 4 (49:07):
What's uh?

Speaker 2 (49:08):
What's the temperature like in the in the what is
it called a dome? It's not cool, it''s not warm. Yeah,
it's it's almost a definition of room temperature.

Speaker 4 (49:18):
It's not bad.

Speaker 2 (49:19):
Why don't they do?

Speaker 6 (49:20):
You know, we were talking about activating different space and
this is a little bit of a tangent which I
go on with Howard. Why don't they activate that space
as a concert venue? I know we've talked about the
stadium used to be used as concert venues, and they've
talked about maybe doing that again. But why don't they
do the dome as a Well they need money, that's
a good idea. Yeah, we all need money. But well,

(49:40):
I guess you're right. Yeah, hold on.

Speaker 2 (49:44):
If you're sitting here going I'm good, I'm not good. No,
but you're right, that's good. That's a good point. Well,
it depends on what you can bill in there.

Speaker 6 (49:52):
Well, I was saying, because we were talking about ways
to get fans to the game.

Speaker 2 (49:55):
Yeah. Yeah, if you're if you've got a Saturday night
play night game.

Speaker 4 (50:00):
Well they have that plan.

Speaker 2 (50:01):
I mean they have a good lineup of bands coming
in the dusk the dusk dust concerts, oh for football.
Ye see yeah, no, they're they're doing. I don't know
who the bands are, but you know, maybe GG and
the Glowfish or whatever they are. Who's the Glove? You
don't know who they are. They're your real Riley group.
They playing a pizza place.

Speaker 4 (50:20):
No, they're there.

Speaker 2 (50:21):
She's a she's a popular local artist GG.

Speaker 4 (50:24):
I should know that.

Speaker 2 (50:25):
Yeah, and they have a few of them, like I
think every game is set for the Uh.

Speaker 4 (50:30):
Yeah, I believe. So trying to find that too, Yeah,
I understanding me.

Speaker 2 (50:34):
I thought you were just you were super excited about
all the house music coming, right, you're big d M guy.

Speaker 4 (50:39):
Yeah yeah, yeah, I don't even know what them. Yeah.

Speaker 6 (50:42):
Yeah, you've dated Molly, but you've never taken Molly. Right,
who's much? That's the electric dance music?

Speaker 3 (50:49):
Okay, meet the Cats full team autographs, schedule posters from
three to four point thirty in uh the Davis Sports Center.

Speaker 4 (50:57):
Okay, that's perfect. Yeah, that's great. Yeah. Good.

Speaker 2 (50:59):
See, so they are already doing it. They are thinking what
am I talking about? Yeah, and then the next day
they have another thing. I believe in the open practice.
I believe open practice. Okay, thank you for coming in, guys.
That was the last. That was pretty cool. I'll see
you next week. Good to see you in two days
in a row. Yeah, great to see your lovely life
babysitting you yesterday.

Speaker 6 (51:21):
My lovely wife. Yeah, I don't, I mean babysitting me
and she keeps me in life. That conversations was like.

Speaker 4 (51:30):
One.

Speaker 6 (51:31):
I don't know if you heard it one, but I
was like, Steve is my wife, Amber, Amber, this is Steve.
We're on the radio together. She doesn't listen to our show.

Speaker 2 (51:39):
She's like, I've listened to it twice, Like, yeah, thanks,
thanks for the support.

Speaker 4 (51:43):
It was about you.

Speaker 2 (51:44):
Yeah, you know him.

Speaker 4 (51:45):
Yeah, I listened to him. Yeah, I know one. Yeah
that was good. Yeah, it was good.

Speaker 2 (51:49):
We need to do more when we can talk more
about that, how to how to activate the public sector
on that.

Speaker 4 (51:54):
Yeah, okay, we'll have those. So I just found it.

Speaker 3 (51:57):
Obviously, we actually talked about the open or the meet
the Cats event, Open practice August seventeenth, seven.

Speaker 4 (52:03):
To fifteen, August seventeenth. That's Saturday, say Sunday, Saturday Sunday.
And before we go, what kind of fan goes to
an open practice? A dedicated one? Yeah, I mean no other?
What do you now? What kind of what do you
get out of it? If you're a casual fan, nothing,
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (52:19):
If you're going for the first time, obviously the first
time experience and seeing the stadium and seeing activate that
way and I've said activated forty times in the last
three minutes.

Speaker 4 (52:29):
Is the concessions open? Can you go? Why don't they open?

Speaker 2 (52:33):
Then you're coming up with stuff that no, sorry, stay
in your lane, mist my lane's going backwards looking. Let
me say thanks to everybody for today.

Speaker 4 (52:43):
We'll see you guys tomorrow
