Speaker 4 (00:27):
Happy Monday to everyone out there. Me heat the Lindo
here on a Monday. We're gonna get started. Just reiterating
the IFL Championship game happening this Saturday, the other Las
Vegas Nighthawks taking on the Green Bay Blizzard.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Seven point thirty. Come out, show out, yep. Cool.
Speaker 4 (00:46):
The tickets are like twenty two dollars something that yeah,
no read something to do on a Saturday night. Maybe
go downtown afterwards. Yeah, have a good.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Night afterwards before well, dude's gonna have a big tailgate
before the game. Where is that, Oh, downtown, down to
TCC TCC. In fact, we're gonna do our show from
there on Friday. That's what it looks like right now.
We're gonna do from three to five at the you're
gonna be around. It was Friday. Maybe you go to
(01:17):
Ray Dave Silver, Maybe j will be working so we
can take pictures of Sasquatch actually existing working.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
I've never seen him work, so he takes the pictures.
Some sad news, Sam sad breaking news. Former Arizona picture
James Ferris, remember of the twenty twenty twelve College World
Series championship team, has passed away at the age of
thirty two.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
Oh no, wow.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Right when you said that, I was. I've been trying
to reach out to him. Remember Dave Dave Michael Lev
a little story on him, maybe six weeks ago whatever,
talked to his mom, communicating with his mom to see
if you can get him on the show. I didn't
hear back. It was that quick. Wow, he was.
Speaker 5 (02:00):
He was a fantastic picture player, is very good part
of the three man rotation. Yeah, it was third in
the rotation, him higher and I think it was Connor Wade.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:11):
Picture, that's the twenty twelve World Series.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Did it say he had cancer right or something? A
battle with liver cancer. Liver cancer. Yeah, that's very sad,
because well, I was trying to reach him just a
while a while back, and his mom reached out to
him for me, and I didn't realize it was that severe.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
Yeah, he threw seven point two scoreless innings in that
four to one win.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
Did he pass yesterday or to believe it was yesterday? Yes? Wow,
he's hold again.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
Though today early this morning. So I was like old
last night thirty three.
Speaker 5 (02:43):
Yeah, they got the news last night during football, so
I know.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
Yeah, Oh so okay, Wow, that's too bad. Thirty threes
very old obviously.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
Yeah to some preseason for the Cats. Some former Cats
team act played the a little bit in that four
first quarter.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
I was taking out.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
Uh you brought this up, Troy that he missed practiced today.
He's dealing with a sore hamstring. He might not play
on Thursday in their preseason finale, but we'll see how.
From what it sounds like, it sounded like they needed
to sit him down. Uh because he wouldn't have let
he would have done it himself.
Speaker 5 (03:24):
Yeah, no team team slapped in a rest unless it's severe.
Their coach stated that it was a minor astream. I
believe should be ready for this season, but you never know.
With hamstrings, it's unpredictable. Tyler Loup went.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
Five for six on Saturday, and the Baltimore Ravens went
over the Dallas Cowboys, and then John Harbaugh came out
and said that officially he will be the starting kicker
for the Ravens.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
I think maybe no surprise there, No, No, he's done
really well. Right. Did you just say I was getting
taken him a text? John Harbaugh did officially announced, didn't
say how he did because he kicked a couple of.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
Five, five or six, hitting from fifty three, fifty two,
forty two, thirty six, and twenty nine, while his only
miss coming from fifty.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Well, the funny thing about it is you paid this guy,
you drafted him. Guess what's gonna happen. He's gonna make
the team. Yeah, especially you got rid of the guy
that was fantastic before him but had a lot of issues.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
He had about thirty family members and friends and tens
because he's from Lucas, Lucas text.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Lucas, Texas.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Did you see all the fans in them stands carrying
the carrying their little slogan there loop there it is,
there it ISoP there it is. That's pretty creative. There's anything.
I thought the same thing. How did the kids not know, unless,
of course, maybe it was internally within the team. No,
but the kids could have easially come up with that.
But you know, it's there's no more signs. Oh really
(04:48):
the music is so old that maybe you guys, well,
I was born in two thousand. I don't remember stuff
like that.
Speaker 4 (04:53):
I mean that, but you know, even then, even aside
from the song like yeah, the phrase oop there it is,
it's pretty common, so loop there it is should have
been that far off.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
I thought university was a higher learning place.
Speaker 5 (05:06):
Apparently not just for that one of the top five
party schools. Apparently not.
Speaker 4 (05:15):
Uh too, And then you have a Jacry crossky Merrit
plaints tonight for the commanders. But I do have to
kind of, I said. I set myself up right there
to correct myself. Adam Scheffler today did tweet out that
he does prefer to be called Bill Crossky Marry.
Speaker 5 (05:33):
His nickname is Bill. He said he was cool with Cory.
It changes so often, it's it's confused.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Just don't call me late for dinner.
Speaker 5 (05:41):
And you know why Bill, right, I believe so? The
TV show, Yeah, yeah, the cartoon show like for little kids,
Little Bill, his parents said. He looked like little Bill
from the TV show. So there we go.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
So next time we come back on the show, something
rather like to be called, and don't call me Steve anymore.
Ye yeah, no, no, no, that's for the future, all right, Okay,
you mean tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (06:11):
The future is now.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
The future it is here, baby, you know there it
is guapo if if yeho is fine with me, but
use them in the same sentence. But yeah, they'll they'll
be taking on the Bengals tonight five o'clock ESPM. Right
after the show, by the way, Chris said, I look
pretty good for a seventy two year old, thank you
(06:33):
very much.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
And then so Arizona was supposed to have a practice
on Saturday. Uh in the stadium. How did they cancel?
Because I believe the field flooded.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
Field flooded, But they could have moved over to the
end door, you know what.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
So you guys were there? Were you guys there? I
don't know enough because I saw that email and I'm
thinking that's strange. I thought maybe because they had the
signing stuff And how'd that go? Well?
Speaker 4 (06:59):
Pretty from what I saw when I heard, it went
pretty well for her team coming off of four after that.
Speaker 5 (07:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
I think it was maybe during the northwest side and
we got nothing.
Speaker 5 (07:09):
Saying on the east side, I heard people getting stuff
and the u of a getting hammered. We didn't get it.
We didn't get anything.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
Hammered so much that some link some links crashing to
each other. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, but I'm thinking it
rained and Tucson.
Speaker 5 (07:24):
Yeah, they got close to three inches. Yeah, it was
crazy and we didn't get it. We didn't. We got
the wind, we got the lightning, we got the humidity.
That's about it.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
Wow, Yeah, I got clet cover. That's about it. And
you're in the east side. Yeah. But Darren chris Well,
the kind of maintenance person for the field. Uh, they
tweet out that they they've restored it and it doesn't
look as horrible.
Speaker 5 (07:50):
As well, you know. And I was wondering because you
saw it and it looked brown, that that brown that
was on the field. I was like, is that dirt?
Like just want to they watched it. That was the
little things, this stuff that goes into the turf. Now
it's not black anymore.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
Now I wonder what the brown is. I think it's quark. Okay,
gotta love the brown.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
Uh So Arizona Soccer two and oh after wins against
un l V five zero, and you see herbine on
Sunday one.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Oh, break out the Cats. We'll have her, We'll have
her on the show pretty soon. They've got a pretty
intense coach.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
Yeah, they've got three straight away games starting Thursday at
New Mexico State and then going to Stanford the next week,
followed by a trip to Berkeley.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Better. What's your coach?
Speaker 2 (08:44):
So?
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Yeah, good coach. Obviously the intense should give her some
money to pay for my traffic tickets and lush crises
for my days there.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
Let me go back. If you can come out of
that one and two, you're you're good. Who's the first
Mexico State? And then Stanford need to California. You need
to be New Mexico State. Yeah, as if you don't,
you're going on three.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:06):
Next home game will be against University of Denver September fourth,
Thursday at seven.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
Okay, give us that analysis in your troy.
Speaker 5 (09:15):
A decent program that makes it.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Oh you even know what that you do?
Speaker 5 (09:18):
Ye, I used to cover soccer. I covered Dony when
he was here. Okay, program was in a much better place.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Well, he's not anymore. No, No, he went to Florida.
Yeah yeah, and then got can there, yes, yeah, okay,
we will stop it there. What did happen?
Speaker 4 (09:36):
Saturday was the Red and Blue scrimmage for the UFA
volleyball team.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
The Blue swept the Red team for zero.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
Jordan Wilson led all attackers with sixteen kills, followed by
carly Sis Narrows with fourteen.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
It would be a good, good, hopefully good season. Yeah,
because they have momentum, right if that's a word, is
it a word? Right now?
Speaker 2 (09:56):
No?
Speaker 3 (09:57):
They had a good run if they had a good
runn right now? No run?
Speaker 4 (10:01):
Even she were you with us? She said, she agreed
with me, right, and then she used the word yeah.
Noticed that that was pretty funny. They have an exhibition
Saturday though, at noon against Northern Colorado.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
Okay, won three letters for you and you.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
Well, it's I mean, it seems like that. I don't
I've never covered volleyball. I've kind of followed it every
now and then it seems like it's moving in a
better direction.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
Yes, yes, yes, Rubio had a cooking a while back,
for sure. Yeah, and then he you know, and then
he didn't and then he did and then he didn't. Uh. Yeah,
it's it seems like, well it's Arizona. I mean it's
it's not Mid. It's like above Mid.
Speaker 5 (10:42):
But not they have what a final four?
Speaker 3 (10:44):
The no no, no, no, no no. They got to the final
four a long time ago.
Speaker 5 (10:48):
Yeah, but it's been a while. Yeah, so you know what.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
I'm saying, it's just right there in that the glimbolo
right there.
Speaker 5 (10:54):
It's not it's never been a terrible.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
No, no, exactly. They're right there at the top, but we
can't get there near the top.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
A little bit more of a sad news. Omaha forward
Dang Mayar died in a drowning accident.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
Near the near Omaha, Omaha.
Speaker 4 (11:11):
I want to say, uh, he was with a friend
at Black Rage Reservoir and Harriman, Utah. Actually, but he
did transfer from North Dakota to Omaha.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
That's tough. That's tough.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
The Diamondbacks just got off of there being swept of,
not swept of, but lost three straight to the Rockies.
Speaker 6 (11:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
I saw that. You see the who's the guy that
interrupted the yeah, defending what was going on.
Speaker 5 (11:39):
With Ned can tell Marte he now he's had I
don't want to say issues in the past, but just
a different character. He's different, he's a little different. He's
some have said self absorbed at times, but when they
were winning, nobody said anything. He took a game off
(12:01):
after the All Star break to go to the Dominican Republic.
They won those games, so it really didn't play into it.
But Phoenix Media has reported that the clubhouses got frustrated
with him, that they're going to trade him, and this
and this and that, and they didn't and they didn't
well for the off season, and Perdomo defended him. His
(12:22):
coaches defended him. It seems that's how it kind of
goes in Phoenix because if you remember justin Upton near
the end of the Upden era, he kind of got
thrown through the rena with the media there and then
they traded him, and it seemed like that same sequence
was happening again, but this time the teammates defended him.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
So yeah, which of course is the right thing to do. Yeah,
but that doesn't mean anything.
Speaker 5 (12:46):
No, No, we got a call.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
Okay, let's take the call. Hellow you're on the air
nine of the ball. Who's this it's er.
Speaker 7 (12:55):
I'm glad you brought up the Diamondbacks because they need
to clean up.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
They need to get rid of my cage in the
general manager. They definitely need to get rid of territory. Levello.
Speaker 7 (13:04):
Guy's not a manager at all.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
And like I brought up the issue.
Speaker 7 (13:08):
Marquee a Boys, I think he's a good ball player.
He's not a great ball player. He's just out there.
He's good when he's good, but then there's times he
doesn't do anything at all. Time for the Diamondbacks to
start over, because they have basically a Triple A team
out there right now, with about three or four good
players on the team.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Let me let me see, let me get Troy and Bob.
Let me rub it real quick. It'll scale of one
to ten. How big of a fan are you?
Speaker 7 (13:35):
I used to be about an eight, but not anymore.
I mean, they're getting rid of it. They have nothing
going for that organization right now.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
Okay, let me get let me get any better next year.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Right Let me get Troy's stuffs because he's a Diamondback.
Thank you Robert for calling. Appreciate it, thank you, thank you.
Go ahead.
Speaker 5 (13:52):
Yeah no, I couldn't disagree more on that. But all
of it except for Tory Leavello. He is a poor manager.
I think one of the worst in baseball. Hazan's a
great GM. He's gotten a lot of talent in Arizona.
They have a core four, core five, Marte Corbin Perdomo, uh,
Gabriel Moreno, and then they have some good pictures that
(14:14):
have been hurt. They've been injured. There's a lot of
talent there. They got in some talent via trade and
and uh, they're in a good position for the future.
They're not in a good position next year because they
have a bunch of guys with Tommy John. But it's
not time to clean house. I think it's time for
a manager change, that's for sure, but not not time
(14:34):
they have. They have a lot of talent on that roster.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
They're just going through the injuries and then some things.
They got rid of two of the three guys.
Speaker 5 (14:41):
Yeah, but they're all on one year deals, so and
they were gonna resign them. So if you're not gonna
trade them, then you're just gonna watch them walk in
free agency.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
So okay, Yeah, I can't understand the frustration, and so
I'm sure you can't.
Speaker 5 (14:54):
I mean, there was they were projected to be like,
I think one of the power rankings out as the
third best team in baseball coming in. But when your
top two rearly pictures go down, your number one picture
that you signed to a two hundred million dollar contract
gets Tommy John surgery. You have guys that are in
and out of line up with injury. Things just start
to snowball and it kind of got out of hand.
(15:15):
And then you factor in a horrible manager and.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
Horrible so he was. Did you think he was horrible
three years ago?
Speaker 5 (15:22):
I thought, yeah, I thought he was a bad manager
that got into the playoffs and got into hot streak
and that kind of saved his job.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
There.
Speaker 5 (15:28):
They were seventeen games above five hundred at one point
in twenty twenty three, with the second best record in baseball.
They went down to nine games below five hundred and
somehow managed to climb out and barely make the playoffs
and go on that run. They finished with eighty four wins.
They're a much better team than an eighty four win team.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
Thanks for using the word run, because it was momentum
and then no momentum, and then momentum against you. That's
my point.
Speaker 4 (15:52):
The Browns have named a veteran quarterback Joe fleckell Er
week one starter.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
Yeah, and they'll take on the Bengals week one. I
wanted to bring this up to you guys and be
a coach or two, but so they got the veteran starting, right.
I think, I don't know. This is how it is
in college football, college sports. You got a good freshmen
coming in. These guys are freshmen, and a lot of
his is expected of them right away, and even in
the NFL or NBA blah blah blah. And to me,
(16:16):
that's kind of overthinking things. And and then you like
like Williams in Chicago, hertsman winner comes in, hopefully he'll
save the day for the Bear fans. Blah blah blah.
It's asking too much of a guy in his first
year to do that. And now these two guys, Dylan
and should give him some time, don't you think. I
know we don't live in that world, but.
Speaker 5 (16:36):
Well, I think Williams he should have started. I think
he had a good year and just the team was
pretty bad around him. Coaching was there horrible, right, and
they got rid of that now. In terms of Shador
and Dylan, their fourth and fifth round draft picks. Why
the heck would you start them like that makes no sense?
Did they play well in preseason? Sure, you know how
many players play well in preseason and ended up being nothing.
(16:59):
The only reason, and this is being talked about, is
because of shoud Or Sanders. That's the bottom line. If
he was If it wasn't should Or and it was
just a fourth round pick, they would say, cool, well
they're going to start Flacco, but that's promising maybe later
for the future.
Speaker 4 (17:11):
Yeah, yeah, what do you think. I think it's the
right call. Yeah, yeah, of course. You had a not
so good season last season. You want to get off
to a good start, you're going to go You're gonna
trust the veteran more. Yeah, this kind of what happened
with the Falcons last season. They drafted Panics, but they
had Kirk Cousins, and you want to get off to
that experienced start.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
I was just gonna mention Penix because I'm sure that
he'll have a nice career, nicest, you know whatever, But
he's kind of biting his time.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (17:37):
Yeah. The only difference there for me is that one,
they just paid Cousins a lot of money, so they
kind of were forced into that two, and again, I
don't mind the draft pick at all. Pennix is a
first round draft pick and a high first round draft pick.
I think if you're anything from like fourteen and above
as a quarterback, I believe you should start unless you're
very raw. Pennix wasn't very wrong. No one needs five kid,
(18:00):
but he had that situation in front of them, of course.
Speaker 3 (18:03):
Yeah, but I think he's gonna have a nice, decent,
nice career because of his situation. He wasn't thrown to
the Wolves right away for sure.
Speaker 5 (18:09):
And the another example of that is Drake me I
think I thought they mismanaged that. I forget who the
week one starter was for New England at the time,
but you went one and five, one to five, whatever
the record was.
Speaker 3 (18:25):
Oh was it Jacob?
Speaker 5 (18:26):
I don't think it was. I don't think it was Persette.
Speaker 8 (18:28):
It was.
Speaker 5 (18:29):
It was like somebody pretty bad. But why do that? Well,
you look at Denver, you look at.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
Well, That's why I was gonna go Denver.
Speaker 5 (18:37):
Conversely, with Daniels, they started and they weren't good efforts,
but they progressed.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
And it takes it takes somebody special. I'm not gonna
say they're special. But somebody good like that and can
handle the situation. Bonnicks, Denver Daniels. I guess too. But
you know those are exceptions to there may be one
or two of.
Speaker 5 (18:57):
Us they are. I just feel that you need to
get your feet wet, you need to experience the games. Sure,
when you're that high of a draft.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
Sure, sure, I get that. But it's also, don't expect
all that much because he's no, he's just months removed
from college for sure. Even in the NBA and all
the other stuff, you've gotta be very special to play
in the league. And obviously it's like it's like a
Arizona's guy in basketball with this person right soon. Don't
expect right away and it took months to get ready here.
Speaker 5 (19:28):
I'm gonna be honest, I think he's going to see
some time in the G League throughout this.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
I wouldn't be surprised going back.
Speaker 5 (19:32):
To problem just because he is a developmental player.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
Yeah, and he's got that soft softness to him that
you have to you can't really have at the next
level softness.
Speaker 5 (19:41):
He's quiet, he's like a shy, he's got a little personality, yeah,
which which kind of translates into into his game. You know,
he gets kind of he didn't have a great Summer
league shooting what he couldn't score shooting, But defensively, I mean,
he was phenomenal.
Speaker 3 (19:53):
About the NBA. How many teams defend, but.
Speaker 5 (19:58):
How many teams need like the good teams. The good
teams defend eventually, right, they need that guy.
Speaker 3 (20:03):
Don't, mister spur are this? Are they a good team? No?
Speaker 4 (20:06):
I'm not all right now, They're gonna have to go
on a little bit of a run to start the
season just so they can have that belief that they
are playoff.
Speaker 3 (20:14):
What do you think? What are your thoughts about him
playing in the Spurs uniform early? I probably won't happen.
Speaker 4 (20:20):
Maybe maybe towards the beginning of the season, just to
get his face out there. Yeah, and then you hit
that middle stretch of the season where maybe you're relying
on your starts a little bit more. Why not give
him that chance to go and still keep playing more,
keep them warm.
Speaker 5 (20:32):
No, I agree to both, and then by then maybe
he's up again kind of like if.
Speaker 4 (20:37):
They get to that playoff spot, then he'll be ready
because he had played down instead of a shot confidence
playing in the NBA but maybe not performing as well.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
Okay, don't disagree with me. Joy last show.
Speaker 4 (20:51):
Ohio State has named their second year player, Julians Saying,
their starting quarterback. So the defending champs have there.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
That should be a good successor fantastic game. What time
of the day is that game? I believe it's a
noon kickoff game.
Speaker 5 (21:04):
Ould say Texas, Texas underdog in that game?
Speaker 3 (21:08):
Yeah, number one, number one.
Speaker 4 (21:10):
I think it's probably one of the first times and
number one has been an underdog.
Speaker 3 (21:13):
It should be a fun game.
Speaker 4 (21:14):
Give me Texas. What's a spread? You know, I'll find
that right now to real quick. Auburn is going to
be retiring Cam Newton's number two. Jersey won the title
and then, uh, we talked about a lot this summer
with Nico Amalava for that transfer to u C l
A and then UCLA. UCLA had a cord at the
(21:36):
transfer to Tennessee. That quarterback is not going to be
starting for Tennessee until pretty much one of the first
modern QB trades in college football. Let me go ahead
and find that Texas.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
The spread. Yeah, yeah, we're way over but yeah, but
we don't have a guess. Yeah, so it looks like
Isle State is favored by two and a half. That's
what I would figure I would and said home right. Yes,
I don't know. I think Ohio today.
Speaker 5 (22:08):
I like Texas a lot this year.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
Yeah, they would be if they lose the first game,
they're not going to be out of anything. Both teams, Yeah,
both teams. Yeah, we'll see. Okay, we've reached the week zero,

Steve Rivera he's got his eye on the ball on
Tucson Sports Station yet Fox Sports fourteen fIF day.
Speaker 3 (27:18):
Hey, welcome back here on Fox Sports Fortune fifty. I
on the ball, all that good stuff. Choice with me,
Get one with us so you can get take your calls.
One's on the alert here so I asked you about
where Arizona fell in the old one hundred and thirty
some Division one football programs, one hundred and thirty something.
You said about fifty something.
Speaker 5 (27:39):
I said fifty eight, sixty one somewhere in there.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
Yeah, they fell in the athletic pull seventy seventy. I
think it's a seventy three, seventy three, seven, seventy seven,
seventy seven. I thought it'd be lower, actually, but you
know you were and you thought higher. Why hire?
Speaker 5 (27:58):
I just think there's enough talent from the previous years.
I know last year, yes, and it kind of says that,
but they brought in sixty one new faces on the roster,
new coaching staff, some mix into matching there. I like
the direction of the program, But if you're not there
every day covering it, yeah, I could understand it.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (28:16):
No, I'm not saying you have an eye to what
you're seeing the people doing the post don't. Yeah, let
me just give you a quick EVL coach Brennan overhauled
both sides of the ball around returning quarterback Noah Flapita
and believes he has a better plan for a year
or two.
Speaker 5 (28:33):
I think it's all accurate. Yeah, yeah, I think it's
all true. What list surprised me and I forget what
website had it. They had the top ten quarterbacks in
the Big twelve and Noah wasn't in the top ten.
Speaker 2 (28:47):
Mm.
Speaker 5 (28:50):
I mean, I know he had a shaky year, but
to me, he is a top ten quarterback in the
Big twelve and probably will make a case where the
top five.
Speaker 3 (28:57):
Well, it goes to show you how great you look
when you're going great and how bad you look when you're.
Speaker 5 (29:03):
Not going well, and how important coaching is.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
Yeah, yeah, no question. And and he admitted to Brettan
that it was not on him. It was not on
It was on him, and rightfully so. And the offensive
coordinator you know, yeah, and who replaced him? No, no, no, no,
Matt Adkins. That did he land up anywhere?
Speaker 5 (29:25):
Matt Akins is gone.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (29:28):
I don't know if he ended up and I'm sure knows.
Speaker 13 (29:31):
No.
Speaker 5 (29:33):
So you have set as a new office, which looks
good for yeah. Yeah, and Josh Miller is a new
Tight Ends coach, even though matt Akins was a I
don't want to say a favorite of Brennan's obviously because
he just replaced them, but he felt like he was
a young upcoming coach. I know they were excited about
(29:53):
Akkins at the time.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
Yeah, no, no, I remember that very very well and
nothing really changed and by that time it's you know,
it's it's tough. It's tough, tough to change and team
morale and and all that. And I agree with you
with him tremendously, Brendan about the kisses some ass. I mean,
you have to kind of dread water and like you're saying,
walk on light shields. It ain't easy.
Speaker 5 (30:16):
No, no, it's a difficult job. And you didn't have
that this year. So that's that's why, I know.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
And with him kind of putting his foot down with
that statement, you know, you know, be alert because there's
gonna be a difference this year.
Speaker 5 (30:32):
Yeah. And he even said it in the media day
leading up to training camp in terms of they thought,
you know, when they would lose, it would spiral out
of control the team, and even in wins that didn't
feel as good and he sensed just a cloud around
the program because of he said that the first one
that's a I have to go. But not not at
(30:53):
Big twelve media day. The local media through that how
it was hard to get them out of a funk
after a loss just because of the expectations going into
the year and you're looking too far ahead.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
And I'll go back to that discussion.
Speaker 4 (31:09):
Okay, anything from uh No, I mean they have from
that the athletic Yeah, that left, they have Arizona State
and number eight.
Speaker 5 (31:19):
Wow, number eight se see, and that's the thing. And
it goes to the point of what you see from
last year recency bias doesn't really translate to what you'll
see maybe and maybe they will be.
Speaker 3 (31:29):
But I think if Arizona was going into like flip
fop the seasons like the previous year, you have them
probably in the top twenty, they'd probably be at fifteen
or were they last year twenty one and AP twenty
one and AP So that was over zealous and I
thought they made a case going into the year that
they probably should have been around that fifteen to eighteen range. Yeah, yeah,
(31:50):
I mean see it that way right away you found
out No, not so much, not so much.
Speaker 4 (31:55):
Yeah, it says the sun devils bringing back almost everyone
from a CFP finals run in a tenancy back.
Speaker 3 (32:01):
Kanye Udo replaces cam.
Speaker 5 (32:04):
Skataboo when I think that's the biggest thing that sure
everybody's gonna undersell uh not having Cam Skataboo. You could
talk all you want how Sam Levitt was really good
the second half of the year. Their offense wasn't that
good unless Skattaboo was going. If you slowed them down,
they were steymied at times. Stemy look at that word, yeah,
(32:26):
stymy five dollar word. No, but I mean you look
at the Texas Texas game. They almost lost that game.
You look at a Utah game that was very down
to the wire, Kansas State byu. It all bounced their way.
Speaker 3 (32:39):
And it was him bouncing of tackles to win the game.
Speaker 2 (32:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (32:43):
And then he almost you know, won the playoff, handled.
Speaker 5 (32:47):
The yeah, against the Texas team that was way more
talented than them.
Speaker 3 (32:50):
Yeah. Yeah, And it looked like he was gonna go
that way early, right, and they came back. Okay, we
take some calls here, five to.
Speaker 5 (32:59):
Forty.
Speaker 3 (32:59):
If you guys to give us a quick call. Your
thoughts on the football season, maybe this weekend's NFL game,
the thoughts of the court, the picture passing James Ferris, Yeah,
just just I'm a little surprised, not surprised, but surprised.
You know, it hits you kind of weird that it
reminds you how fast things can develop, no question, no question. Yeah,
(33:22):
everything contained real quick, right right, And he was just
he was a hero, I mean hero for for that
year of baseball and that big nice run that they had.
Speaker 5 (33:32):
I mean that, that whole entire pitching staff him higher
and then Connor Wade just everything started to click in.
The just started to.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
Roll in right right. They were never behind in that
in that playoff.
Speaker 5 (33:46):
They were mowing down teams. What they're starting pinching. I
don't know if you guys saw it, but there was
a report by I think Yahoo kind of followed the
report that the Big Ten is interested in moving to
the thirty team play off twenty eight Yeah, okay, yeah
about a twenty eighteen college football playoffs? Please, Now, who's left?
(34:08):
I mean, why invite everybody in your I saw that
he said twenty four to twenty eight. But what's the
what's the the point? The points to get every Big
ten team and SEC team in and make money. I
mean that's yeah, right.
Speaker 3 (34:21):
Yeah yeah, but then what's special about it? That's the
whole thing, right, we gotta call hello, you're on the
air nine the ball?
Speaker 2 (34:27):
Who's this?
Speaker 1 (34:29):
He?
Speaker 2 (34:30):
Vic?
Speaker 3 (34:30):
What's the word? Thought to have to get a missing
person's out for you?
Speaker 2 (34:35):
Wait a second?
Speaker 3 (34:38):
If you don't find them a little Mexico, we were
really missing him.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
I'll be there.
Speaker 14 (34:45):
It's either with a phone with you or a little Mexico.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
What's the word?
Speaker 2 (34:50):
Hey?
Speaker 13 (34:51):
You know what?
Speaker 2 (34:51):
I had a couple of questions, and we go through
this every year.
Speaker 14 (34:55):
Steve, what's the tight end? Stopped looking like Troy? Are
they gonna throw to him this year and throw what's
gonna happen?
Speaker 5 (35:02):
I think they're gonna they're going to I think the
group is a little bit more physically not gifted, but
physically physically ready than last season. Josh Miller and said, they,
you know, have been very vocal on how they've had
to change things around.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
And how they say that every year Troy everything that.
Speaker 3 (35:21):
Well, they did they went to him two three years ago.
He's in the pros right now. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (35:26):
No, No, Jed did with Timer McLaughlin. They they did
with that. It's gonna be different. I think you're not
going to see a tight end with you know, six
seven hundred yards or something like that. But I think
the goal is that multiple guys in that three hundred range.
Speaker 1 (35:41):
What's that?
Speaker 5 (35:42):
What's wrong or what's Bennett Burnette? Burnett, Yeah, he looks
the part. I cannot fully say, but he will be
in the mix. The main issue of Burnett throughout his
Homepack career is staying healthy. One of those guys that
you know and hamstring here, twisted ankle there. He's just
(36:03):
never really been able to stay healthy. And as that
piles up, other guys kind of go in and play decently.
It's hard. It's hard to get him playing time. He's
had a good camp. But to me, the tight end
right now of Arizona is Tyler. Tyler Powell looks really good,
the Phoenix kid, brothea kid, more physical, but to me
(36:26):
is the most gifted tight end of the group.
Speaker 3 (36:28):
Vic let me ask you a quick question. Uh, you
you ever have hamstring issues recently?
Speaker 14 (36:35):
I get I I pulled a growing playing basketball, not
a hat, So you.
Speaker 3 (36:40):
Don't see that's a good thing. You're not in shape.
I'm not in shape. I haven't had a string injury
in a while. So you know what it says, if
you're get in shape, you're gonna have issues.
Speaker 14 (36:51):
That's what that that.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
I mean, I don't get it, but that's what they claim.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
Any other questions.
Speaker 14 (36:56):
But my other question, guys was how about the kid
from CDEO, Kaden Luke any plan?
Speaker 3 (37:01):
Good question because I thought the same thing recently.
Speaker 5 (37:04):
What's up man? They have him listed as a tight end.
To me, he's just he's gonna be a full back.
I know they have as a tight end, but they're
gonna use him as a blocking tight end. We've seen
him cracked down on some blocks. I mean, he's the
best blocker on the team in terms of the backs.
Even though he is listed as a tight end. Will
(37:25):
he be a red zone target? I don't know. It
felt like the last couple of years, especially last year
is his third year, Yeah, when he knows that his
second year one, So my bad on that. But when
he came in last year, you knew what Arizona was
of course, so that's the problem with him.
Speaker 3 (37:44):
Let me throw this out to you, God to you,
because you saw what Scannabu did, right, and then there's
always that connection, right, that's the same type of guy.
He's the same type of player, like a bullet bull.
Am I wrong? And I could be wrong. I'm fine
with that. But did you see it one same thing? Yeah,
I saw a little bit.
Speaker 2 (37:59):
I see it. I mean the kid with is just
a straight baller. I mean, what do you he wants?
Speaker 4 (38:04):
I see a little bit more athleticism with Kataboo. But
but Kate Lucas Stocky, you know, so he's gonna take
a lot to get It's gonna take eleven guys to
get him.
Speaker 5 (38:16):
To me, he is a classic full back in an
era that isn't built for classic full backs. To be honest,
I don't think he's agile enough to be a guy
that you can get the ball to ten fifteen times
a game. Could he pick up a third and one
third and two, yes, But the issue is, you know
they're going to be running when he's in. He's got
(38:36):
to show a little bit more versatility, and I think
that's why they moved him to tight end. But it's
still the full back mentality.
Speaker 14 (38:45):
I wish he would get a shot because I'm telling
you he's in that Statabo mode too, where he's kind
of just a winner at everything he does and you can't.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
You can't shy away from that it factor.
Speaker 8 (38:56):
Whatever.
Speaker 3 (38:56):
No, I agree, I agree, and they picked him up
for a reason, right, well, whatever reason. But yeah, I
don't know if I see the same skut a book thing,
but it's hard not to compare.
Speaker 5 (39:06):
Again, I think I think red zone will be interesting
with him. Maybe that's where he'll get some of his opportunities.
And to me, it's more like a Peyton hillis h
for former Bronco and former Arkansas razorback, big back, physical back.
But again, you just you got to show off versatility,
and I think that's why they have him at tight
end right now, and you just need to see him
(39:28):
catch a couple of passes. Just throw the defense off.
Speaker 2 (39:33):
Man. I hope he gets a shot.
Speaker 14 (39:35):
So and last team. Even though I'm sixty five, I
haven't pulled a hammy dancing yet.
Speaker 3 (39:41):
If that's the place to do it, that's well, you'll
do it. You two step? Are you.
Speaker 1 (39:46):
All right?
Speaker 2 (39:47):
Guys?
Speaker 5 (39:47):
Great show today?
Speaker 3 (39:48):

of long steps in that two steps. But he's chasing

You know, I see poles to practice and it's just
like ground shots and everything. So I don't really get
anything out of it. Unfortunately we can't. We can't get
(45:35):
an all twenty two of practice.
Speaker 3 (45:38):
There's no question. They don't want you to. They don't
want you to.
Speaker 2 (45:42):
No, you know, but those of us that are anxiously
waiting for the season to start, you know, it's like
like like Vick was asking about Kayden about Kate and Luke.
You know, it's like, well, we won't know anything until
they start playing. Yeah, yeah, we've got a young We've
got a young oldc that we don't know what he's
(46:02):
gonna be.
Speaker 3 (46:03):
Don donk. Before you move on, let me ask you.
Did you read all the stuff that's out there, from
the Star to SI to whomever in me? If I
ever decide to write something, do you write? Do you
read that stuff?
Speaker 2 (46:15):
I read some of it?
Speaker 3 (46:16):
Okay? The reason I asked, The reason I ask is
because people like when we start covering teams like now
with football and me with basketball and stuff like that,
people start believing all this team is going to be
really good because of all the glowing stories that come
out right, and then they proved then they're not. They're
not as good as the glowing reviews are. So do
you buy into that or no?
Speaker 2 (46:36):
I'm taking it all with a grain of salt. I
watched the videos of the press conferences with all the
with all the coaches, the position coaches and everything, and
these guys are great. This is the best group I've
ever had, and this and that, and they got a
great attitude and these guys all you know, they all,
you know, squat six hundred pounds and everything else, and
(46:57):
you know, well that's that's all fine and good. But
you know, you know, I'm just I'm anxiously awaiting to
see improvement, is what I'm I'm seeing, you know. And
you know, like Vick was asking about the tight ends
and that Arizona never does this or that, Hey, we're
starting all over again, yeah, for the second year in
(47:18):
the row. So we won't, we won't. We won't know
anything until we see it.
Speaker 3 (47:22):
Well, let me ask you this too, because a as Troy,
don't you think that it will take three or four
games before you actually know give them the schedule?
Speaker 5 (47:31):
Asking him or mean both? Go ahead?
Speaker 2 (47:35):
I think so. I think it's going to take a
few games because if let's say, let's say they start
out with the short passing game, throwing quick quick hitters, timing,
timing patterns and things like that, and Noah's you know,
hitting at an eighty percent clip, and we don't get
(47:55):
a chance to see the running game. You know, we
may not see the running game for two or three
games because they're going, Wow, this is working. Why would
you go away from it? You know, So it's it's
going to be it's gonna be hard to see where
the early season ups and downs and how it settles,
how things settle and what time of what type of
team it becomes. What's the third team offensively and defensively.
Speaker 3 (48:19):
So you're definitely gonna go after the third game.
Speaker 5 (48:22):
Yeah, I think the Kansas State game and the I
was taking because that's in back to back weeks, You're
going to learn a lot about this football team. Hawaii
they should take care of. We were saying they should
take care of I get the NAU team happened, But honestly,
I think it's going to be a lot more competitive
than last year. For the Kansas State game. Mind you,
that was a fourteen seven game going into half when
(48:43):
everything kind of fell apart. I trust this offense coordinator
and these assistants more that I did last season. Even
last year with all the hype going into last year,
you kind of felt like this doesn't feel right. And
he mentioned it with the kissing of Adid and stuff
like that. There's a different mindset. And you look at Seth. Yes,
he's a young offense coordinator one year at Marshall, but
(49:06):
he's known as an air raid guy, they're twentieth in
rushing because he's able to adapt to the players he
has on his roster. And the way he went over
Brennan for the job was you got to run to
win the football. Went to run the football to win games.
And that's the bottom line. And you don't hear a
lot of air raid guys talk about that.
Speaker 2 (49:26):
Yeah, okay, you know, and that that takes us back
to rich Rod. Rich Rod. Remember he'd start to drive
with a with a run and they get to the
line of scrimmage and if they saw a run gap
that they could hit, they run and they keep running.
And it wasn't you know, rich Rod is He's also
(49:47):
accused of being really pass happy, but he just as
soon run the ball as well. And I'm hoping what
I'm hoping to see is an offense with some temple
and if they've got running lanes to run through, run
and also pass. You know, I don't know, a fifty
to fifty mix, a sixty to forty mix, but whatever
(50:08):
it takes to get more points at the end of
the game.
Speaker 5 (50:10):
Do you know, if they're gonna go huddle and they're
gonna be up top, they're gonna be no offense.
Speaker 2 (50:17):
Also last year with the injuries, it seemed like early
in games they were in a lot of games and
then it was just they were just too thin to
to win out those games like West Virginia should have
been a win and it The thing was like, like
you were saying before, Troy about go ahead, Uh, let's
(50:40):
try was saying before about Kate and Luke last season
when he was in the game. You know what, you
knew what he was going to do. And the thing
is is it didn't matter whether he was in the
game because we knew what the offense was gonna do.
Run run, and then Noah scrambled for his life. And
you know, I and I and what I'm looking forward
to seeing is not that. Yeah, anything like that.
Speaker 3 (51:01):
Okay, thanks Don, thanks for the call. Thanks guys, appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (51:05):
I have a good day.
Speaker 3 (51:07):
Well what's what's the game that they were getting killed on?
I went to the game as a fan and then
left because they were getting killed on and then they
made that ruin.
Speaker 5 (51:15):
Came back from one. Yeah, you know it's they were
in a lot of games that half and then they
broke down. Some of it was in great shirt, but
a lot of it was play calling. A lot of
it was Deno Babers's offense. They went they will well
they were I mean they could. They were only in
the red zone twenty twenty four times.
Speaker 3 (51:34):
Right right, That was like that's it. Yeah, one of
the worst in the Division one.
Speaker 5 (51:38):
They were thirty ninth in the red zone because they
were squaring in an eighty nine percent clip. You're only
there twenty four times, so you know, you just got
to get into the red area.
Speaker 4 (51:49):
You know.
Speaker 5 (51:49):
Rich Rod, he was known as a rushing guy. He
would run the ball all day long.
Speaker 3 (51:54):
When Dean carry, you can do that.
Speaker 5 (51:56):
Yeah, and set day it's going to be a balance.
I don't think he there. He doesn't care about the
stat book in terms of, hey, I need to hit
X amount of rushing yards, X amount of passing yards
vice ever. Just win.
Speaker 3 (52:10):
Yes, that's all he at the bottom line is that.
Speaker 5 (52:13):
Yeah. Yeah, And you hear a lot oftense coordinator to say, well,
we need to pass the ball for you know, three
hundred and fifty yards or we need to run the
ball for at least two hundred yards a game. Seth
does not care about any of that. Yeah, just get
the job back. It's going to change week to week. Well,
they out ruin you, though, I'll pass you. We won
the game twenty seventeen. It was like, it's like the
dictmy approach kind of you know, you have to start somewhere, right, Yeah,
(52:35):
just win the games and even if it's not pretty
well because your opponent's going to change week to week,
so the game planning that what you're gonna do is
gonna change every single.
Speaker 3 (52:46):
Uh, we're almost ready to go here, naughty, Okay, we're
good to go. Okay, let's go. Thanks everybody for the calls,
appreciate it. We'll have a show tomorrow. Fortunately, well see tomorrow,
Thanks Troy. Thanks one tomorrow
